Gulf Grouper By CAM Staff

C

rystal LaFosse fishes a lot. She’s traveled to destination fisheries around the world. Everywhere she’s been has its own allure, but she said when it comes to catching fish, nowhere compares to Louisiana’s Gulf Coast. What would you expect to hear from a Louisiana girl? Cajun Tackle in Lake Charles, La. is the family business, which Crystal operates with her brother and her parents. She is the founder and director of the Salty Catch Fishing Rodeo in Lake Charles and director of the Tuna & Swordfish Challenge at Hurricane Hole in Grand Isle, La. Even with so much fishing in her work life, she relishes the opportunity to launch out of Lake Charles with family, friends and her 6-year-old son Cardyn. Despite the excellent inshore opportunities nearby in the maze of waterways and Calcasieu Lake, Crystal’s favorite destination is well over 100 miles out in the Gulf in grouper water. West Louisiana doesn’t enjoy the same proximity to deep water as destinations to the east. With runs inside 50 miles out of Venice or Grand Isle, anglers flock to the deep-water rigs and rock bottom where the edge of the Continental Shelf provides dramatic depth changes. Out of Lake Charles, it’s a 110- to 130-mile run to reach the 200-foot depths and prime grouper territory. However, those willing to make longer runs will find bottom that hasn’t already been picked clean by other anglers. “Most people don’t come here to target grouper because the run offshore is so far,” Crystal said, “but that also makes it good because the area is not over-fished.” Yellowedge, gag, and strawberry grouper are some of Crystal’s personal favorites, but she said it’s always fun when the rod tip bends over and you really don’t know what you’re bringing up. Regardless of the species, grouper are some of the best eating fish in the sea, and loading the box with delicious fish is half the fun. “There’s nothing better than cranking in a huge Warsaw grouper. That’s just the best!” she said. The challenge of strapping on a harness and battling a big Warsaw is enough to test anyone’s strength and endurance. Reeling up a 200-plus-pounder is on Crystal’s to-do list. “Typically the big grouper hang on the up-current side of the rigs in 200 to 250 feet of water,” Crystal said. “Bottom fishing, you’re looking for rock or reef formations, drop offs and drastic water depth changes. Usually anything over 200 feet is good grouper territory.” For Crystal, “anything over 200 feet” is sometimes 500 feet or deeper, when you never know what’s going to come up on the end of the line. Her rigs account for the dark waters at these depths with lights that mimic the bioluminescence of squid and attract grouper. “There are several ways to deep drop, and grouper rigs can be made with one to five hooks, ” she said. “Typically when you’re targeting a big warsaw, it’s with an 18/0 or 20/0 circle hook rig with glowing lights, a 3- to 5-pound weight and live bait around the oil rigs. I make my own three-hook rigs using 8/0 or 10/0 circle hooks, glow in the dark squid, lights, and topped with dead squid bait… You can use the 3-5 hook rigs around structure or just bottom fishing on rock piles. “The glow squid are from Offshore Angler, Fathom Offshore, and many other brands. The LED deep-drop lights range in colors of blue,

red, green or disco, and there are many different brands from Offshore Angler or Lindgren-Pitman, which we have a selection of at Cajun Tackle,” she continued. “These lights and glow squid attract the grouper in the deep dark water. The squid are put on just above the hook, so when you add your bait it’s glowing right above it. The light is added about a foot above the rig and attached with a snap swivel or rubber band.” As much as anything, heading offshore is an opportunity to explore. Crystal said she and her friends all have the same standard coordinates marked on their electronics, but everyone has their favorites, and she’s had a few trips when they ran up on new bottom that turned out to be great. “We have spent time seeking out new numbers to mark, and that just keeps it interesting,” she said. “Keeping the depthfinder on while running from spot to spot, paying attention to any changes in depth and bottom, you can really find some good spots. The ocean is such a wonderful place, and there are so many new things to explore. I think that’s what keeps me coming back. Every trip is different and special in its own way.” When she’s not fishing, Crystal LaFosse can be found working the shop at Cajun Tackle in Lake Charles, La. After a successful second-annual Salty Catch Fishing Rodeo in July, the Tuna & Swordfish Challenge is coming up Sept. 28-Oct. 1 at Hurricane Hole Resort and Marina in Grand Isle. Mountain Lakes Are Calling

By Nick Carter eering into clear-green water from the casting deck, frantic movement is the first thing to catch your eye. As a morning fog evaporates, rolling mountains rise up all around and the sun breaks through to reveal small groups of blueback herring. They dart back and forth, skittering near the surface to evade or confuse predators below. Then it happens. It starts with a few scattered topwater hits and intensifies. By the time you look up from impaling the nose of a blueback from the bait tank, there is an acre of water boiling. Big hybrid bass herd herring around the cove. The trolling motor whirrs to keep you in casting range. For the next few hours the action came in flurries, with multiple anglers battling through double and triple hook-ups whenever baits encountered a school of hungry hybrids. Some fish came on multiple downlines arrayed in rod holders. The most exciting takes

P

were on the pitch rods, lightweight rigs kept ready for surfacing fish. Either way, the key to drawing strikes was a lively bait, and this is the style of fishing you’ll experience with Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service. They fish the gorgeous mountain lakes on both sides of the Georgia, North Carolina border. This trip was on Lake Chatuge, a 7,200-acre impoundment of the Hiawassee River that stretches 13 miles from Hayesville, N.C. south to Hiawassee, Ga. The lake is known for big spotted and hybrid bass. If you’ve never battled a hybrid approaching double digits on light tackle, it makes reeling in a 10-pound largemouth seem comparable to fighting a wet shoe. The same could be said for most of the species guides Shane Goebel and Darren Hughes pursue. Big Ol’ Fish concentrates on three lakes in the region and plans trips based on where the current bite is best. Southwest of Chatuge, Lake Nottely is a 4,200-acre impoundment of the Nottely River. Its primary draw is trophy striped bass. Stripers from 20 to 40 pounds show up regularly on this reservoir outside Blairsville, Ga. The elusive 50-plus-pounder is what everyone seeks, and very lucky anglers just might find it trolling bluebacks, big gizzard shad or trout. Those who prefer counting fish to weighing them will find fast action on Lake Hiwassee near Murphy, N.C. It is a 6,000-acre reservoir in the same drainage, which for some reason is spelled differently in North Carolina. Lake Hiwassee features breathtaking cliff formations and spectacular fishing for smallmouths that reach 6 pounds and larger, as well as big walleye and striper. Over a couple action-packed trips with Darren and Shane on their The Angler Magazine-wrapped Carolina Skiff, one couldn’t help ask why they don’t fish artificials when the bite gets so hot. Their answer, almost in unison, was: “Because we like catching lots of fish.” That sentiment is hard to argue with, but it’s worth noting that Darren owns Hughes General Store in Blairsville, the area’s primary purveyor of live baits. Rumor has it they make a mean biscuit. Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service can be found online at bigolfish.com. Call them at 828-361-2021.

A 10K/10K rating means the Storm Surge has found a good balance between keeping water out while allowing airflow For those warm, humid days, when some rain jackets just leave you wet with sweat instead of rain, on-demand zip vents under the arms provide additional breathability to keep the wearer cool and dry. On cool mornings, windproof materials and construction block out the breeze with 2.5 layer bonded fabric and a durable, smooth exterior. The Storm Surge has a loose, fuller cut for complete comfort and a full range of motion. Adjustable cuffs and a bungee hem keep moisture from creeping in, while zippered hand pockets keep gear safe.

The North Face’s DryVent 2.5L technology utilizes a polyurethane coating that is remarkably waterproof, breathable and durable to create a jacket for active pursuits where light weight and packability are essential. An inner layer finished with dry touch print helps raise the fabric from the skin for comfort and to enable quick transfer of vapor to the outside. The Venture 2 also packs up small into its own pocket. In short, wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, this jacket is designed to be there to keep you dry and comfortable. A relaxed fit and adjustable hood provide a full range of motion as well as room for extra layers, hats or helmets. Pit-zip venting increases breathability. Hand pockets are covered and zippered to store gear safe and dry. Adjustable Velcro cuff tabs keep water from running down your arm while casting, and a hem cinch-cord stops wetness from coming in from below. With a durable yet breathable ripstop exterior, it is likely the wearer will never need to use The North Face’s legendary lifetime warranty.

What’s It Like to Live in a Log Cabin?

By Ben Martin • Editor in Chief

View time-lapsed video at www.blueridgelogcabins.net As an outdoor enthusiast, I’m naturally drawn to the aesthetic charm of log cabins. I have enjoyed numerous stays and vacations in log cabins over the years. Living in one on a long term or even potentially permanent basis is an intriguing thought for me. With that question in mind, I set out to speak with individuals who have taken that step, just to get their honest opinions, before I make the leap to a log cabin as my permanent residence. My first call was to Mark Alberghini, our Charlotte, North Carolina co-publisher. He and his family have been living in a log cabin for more than 20 years. According to Mark, returning to his cabin after a stressfilled day in the publishing business offers an immediate calming effect. He went on to say that living in a log cabin has left him less interested in vacations than at any other time in his life. His now-grown daughters tell him they are always pleased to return to the log cabin for holidays and family events, and that it seems to have created a deeper sense of tradition than many of their friends who live in conventional homes seem to experience.

I then contacted several Blue Ridge Log Cabin homeowners to see how they compared the experience of log cabin living to conventional homes. Jerry and Carol Clark, who recently moved into their Blue Ridge Log Cabin, said the experience of returning to their log home is much more enjoyable than that of their previous conventional homes. Blue Ridge Log Cabin owner and high school principle Charlie Burry informed us that, “As a high school principle, I value regular downtime away from the pressures of my job.” In that regard, Mr. Burry went on to say, “My wife and I greatly enjoy the peace and relaxation afforded by log-home living verses a conventional home.” Jim Austin, another Blue Ridge Log Cabin owner, commented, “several years ago we decided to change our lifestyle and head out of the hustle and bustle of city life and settle for the quiet and serene country life. We found the perfect wooded location in the foothills of the Appalachians, complete with a little stream running through it. These past five years have been fantastic. We couldn’t have picked a better location or company to build our home. We absolutely love the quietness of the woods in which deer and turkey abound. The sound of our little creek in the morning mist seems heaven sent. Perfect setting, perfect cabin. We love it and wouldn’t change cabin living for the world.” Throughout the numerous interviews that were conducted, the response was always the same. Those homeowners who had changed from a conventional home to a log cabin unanimously agreed, the feeling of contentment, relaxation and satisfaction with the log home was far superior to that of their conventional home. Had this little research project been a survey, it would have seemed artificially skewed. Rarely will you find 100 percent of your survey group in agreement on nearly any subject. In this inquiry, every single person, without exception, agreed that they would never trade log-home living for a conventional home. That’s what it’s like to live in a log cabin.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT SS-1000-CL SUPER SPREADER

The Super Spreader SS-1000-CL cast net takes catching bait to a new level. A continuous weight line allows the net to sink evenly, and it provides a better seal on the bottom. With a “true” pound of weight per radius foot it also sinks at a faster rate. Superior design means this net captures more baitfish on each throw, and it has made it America’s No. 1 selling net. Exclusive Japanese monofilament resin netting, available in mesh sizes from 3/8” to 1”, is soft and strong for superior performance. Heavy-duty, high-count 90-pound-test Braille lines make for a stronger net with a more secure closure on retrieval. This net performs well shallow and deep. The 30-foot-long, high-floating braided polyethylene line is perfect for deep water and currents, and Fitec’s KOMFORT KUFF reduces chaffing on the throwing wrists for anglers who are serious about filling up the bait tanks. The SS-1000-CL Super Spreader is available in sizes of 6, 8, 10 and 12 feet with 3/8” mesh, and 8, 10 and 12 feet with 1” mesh. Look for it at your local bait shop or find it online at castnets.com.

Ever wonder about the origins of Labor Day? Labor Day is an official holiday in the United States celebrated on the first Monday in the month of September. It honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws and well-being of the country. Beginning in the late 19th century, as the trade union and labor movements grew, trade unionists proposed that a day be set aside to celebrate labor. “Labor Day” was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which organized the first parade in New York City. In 1887, Oregon was the first state of the United States to make it an official public holiday. Following the deaths of workers at the hands of United States Army and United States Marshals Service during the Pullman Strike of 1894 in Chicago, the United States Congress unanimously voted to approve legislation to make Labor Day a national holiday and President Grover Cleveland signed it into law six days after the end of the strike. Cleveland supported the creation of the national holiday in an attempt to shore up support among trade unions following the Pullman Strike. By the time it became an official federal holiday in 1894, thirty U.S. states had already been observing Labor Day. Labor Day is also called the “unofficial end of summer” because it marks the end of the cultural summer season. Many workers take their twoweek vacations during the two weeks ending Labor Day weekend. To take advantage of large numbers of potential customers with time to shop, Labor Day has become an important weekend for discounts by many retailers in the United States, especially for back-to-school sales. Some retailers claim it is one of the largest sale dates of the year, second only to the Christmas season’s Black Friday. So my friends, make sure you take a little vacation to celebrate the fruits of your labor. Take some time to go fishing and check out some of the Labor Day sales from our trusted advertisers. good sportsman respects other anglers, the resource, and the tradition of the anglers that came before by being courteous and respectful on the water. For many, fishing etiquette will come as second nature, but then there are those few that you just want to say a few inappropriate words to at times. After watching over and over again, Boaters please be respectful of other Boaters around you especially at the boat ramps. Best advice is if you are not ready don’t get in line to back in your boat. Pull off to the side out of the way and load your boat, make sure plugs are in and be ready to unload your boat. Don’t be a ramp hog and take up two lanes. A lot of marinas have multiple lanes, but no define dividers. I cannot stress how much Boaters need to turn off your headlights when backing down the ramp! Try to back a boat trailer with someone’s headlights blinding you, basically impossible. As soon as, your vehicle goes into reverse, turn off your headlights so people backing in will be able to see. Assuming most Boaters, well Anglers, are launching in the before safe day light hours. And boat ramps on tournament days are extremely busy. Anglers will be everywhere and moving in a fast pace and tempers will flare if you do any of these things. Don’t park so close you can’t get into your maneuver your own vehicle and trailer or the guy next your cant. If the parking lot is empty give everyone some space still. Most anglers are not that patient to wait on weekend Boaters that are not used to the fast paced, be ready, and thoughtful of others at ramps. As boaters or anglers we should all aware of these simple considerate unpublished rules of a boat ramp. We’re all on the same team, so try to be considerate of others around you. After watching over and over again, Boat ramps are just the beginning and once you’re on the water there are unwritten simple rules as well. Basically, if you don’t want someone running their boat being inconsiderate

to you, don’t be doing it to another boater. Some of the common on the water etiquette. Pay attention to the wake though areas that have no-wake zones. If you are in close proximity to recreational anglers and kayakers pay attention and reduce your speed to show respect and not cut them off. Also, as anglers we use the term “Don’t Be A Pot Licker” and every angler knows what this means. Be respectful of other anglers and don’t run in on them when they are catching fish. This is something that has become particularly aggravated when new anglers come along and come in where anglers have grinding out the hours it takes to find good fishing locations. Be respectful don’t come so close distance within another angler unless you’re waved in or told ok to pass. Just keep a distance from other boaters and pay attention. Another big tip is to keep in mind this is a recreational sport, hobby or even family time to enjoy so be courteous of the environment and keep your trash in the boat not in the water. This also goes for old fishing line. Bag your trash, keep it picked up off the boat so it don’t just blow out when you’re running. Just remember as frustrating as some boaters can be, maybe they just have not been educated on the simple unwritten rules at the ramp or on the water. And if you are remember how you act at the ramps or on the water affects how people identify you. So, be safe and respectful of others. With boating season really kicking in this month, this is the perfect time to service your boat motor to ensure a trouble-free season. Manufactures recommend servicing your boats motor each year or 100 hours of run time, whichever comes first. Service such as oil and gear lube change, fuel filter, water pump impellers, thermostats and other maintenance items specific to your motor are essential to the life of the motor. It also allows the tech to inspect the oil and gear lube for signs of water intrusion indicating a leaky seal or other potential problems. At Clear Lake Powerboat Service, Inc. a Premier Mercury Service Dealer, we take great strides to provide our customers with the best service possible. We also provide service for Volvo Penta, Mercruiser, Indmar and other gasoline marine motors. Preventative maintenance prevents problems from arising so they do not interrupt your boating season.

he fishing has been steady on the middle coast, despite the gafstophersons, sail cats, snot sharks, gaftops invading over the last couple of weeks. I’m still catching nice stringers of trout fishing piggies, croakers, or Norton sand eels over grass or shell; but shell has been holding more gaftops lately. We have also had some really low tides lately which in my opinion increased my redfish bite. Instead of fishing right on the shoreline, I’ve been catching better reds on the flats off the shorelines casting mullet, shad, cracked crab, and gold spoons to large sandy potholes. I also got the chance to go off shore and chase some snaps. On my way down south to run a few charters I get a call from Mike Ramirez, Me, Hello? Mark Hays from Houston with the Mike, Whats up? Offshore today snappers snappers! Me, I don’t know bud, I have three three trips in a row I should probably rest a little today. Besides I’m meeting a friend Mike, Really? I have to beg you to go offshore? Mike, Bring Him see you at the dock in two hours, and hangs up. So I pick up my friend Cliff and we head to the ferry, about the time we get on the ferry I get a text. Meet me at the fuel dock behind the Back Porch. I point at a boat going behind the ferry, that’s our boat! Talk about timing, so I took a picture of “The Roughneck” for Mike. We ran about 35 miles out to a spot without boats on it. We worked snapper slappers tipped with squid and caught some really nice fish 5-10 lbs. Cliff lost a undersized ling at the boat. It was really nice to keep some snappers. Thanks for the invite Mike! On the way home Cliff says, That was sweet! That’s an awesome boat! Well, I guess we were at the right place at the right time? Yep! One last thing, I’d like to congratulate my women’s team “The Reel Hot Rods” on their 3rd place stringer and 1st place Red at the Saltwater Sweeties Tournament. Way to go! Jo Lindsey, Amber Fogg, Erin Large, and Shannon Best. The funny thing is we pulled up to that shoreline about 30 mins before another team of lady anglers. Erin caught a 24 1/2”,21 1/2” and Amber caught a 27 5/8”. Timing is everything you have to be at the right place at the right time, but the thing is if you don’t go you won’t know. ell it’s a scorching summer. I have fished the Intercoastal Waterway more this summer than I have in the last 7 years. The water temperature on a falling tide just gets too hot and the fish shut down. The schools redfish and drum really like to swim directly off decide of the grass to the drop off. The truck generally sick at least 20 ft off the bank. The morning bite is still really good in the flats until about 10 a.m. . My routine has been topwater till 8 a.m. then soft Plastics till 10 a.m. in the flats. Then I move 2-channel a drop off a whole or the intercoastal and continue to work soft Plastics. My go-to lure has been Texas roach color by down south lures. People have a hard time believing that we catch limits of drum on soft Plastics. The trick is to work them very very very slow. Hopping them

one inch at a time. Drum do not like fast-moving bait. If you were throwing a baitcaster fishing reel imagine sticking your thumb on the spool itself and retrieving it simply by drawing back your thumb on the spool.Buggs 1/8oz flies also work really well especially if you use Procure shrimp scent gel. For redfish the bone diamond and watermelon red flake working in the middle of the water column with a slight twitch every 3 seconds has been very successful for my redfish and trout . For flounder I like the original red and white and key lime pie boats made by down south lures as well on a 8-ouncehellrazor jig head. There’s two ways of working for flounder one razor Rod tip a foot at a time letting the lower balance to the bottom or just dragging it straight on the floor. The man who invited Hellrazor rattling jig heads this wonderful product name is Allen Harrington and is one of the finest man I’ve ever met my life. It saddens me to see him have to say goodbye to his beautiful wife. Who he absolutely adored and if he wasn’t talking about his jig heads he was talking about his wife. He is a great man with a big heart and treats everybody with the same amount of respect to the highest level. Everyone in the fishing community loves you and what you stand for and how great your product . I’ll see you soon brother. Anybody who sees him out and about please show him some love as he deserves it. or the third year in a row, Galveston Bay received a “C” in the Galveston Bay Report Card, a grading system used to convey the health of the Bay produced in partnership with Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) and Galveston Bay Foundation. We label a “C” as “adequate for now,” and strive to work together towards achieving a straight “A” Bay. “Since its inauguration in 2015, the annual Report Card has identified the most pressing needs of the region and guided efforts to empower the public, as they preserve the area and foster a healthy and productive environment for generations to come,” said Galveston Bay Foundation President Bob Stokes. “Our initiatives are fueled by our yearly assessment of the Bay, and have led to community-based actions to restore lost or degraded wetlands, oyster reefs, and bird rookery habitats.” The Galveston Bay Report Card evaluates 19 indicators that impact Galveston Bay and the surrounding watershed, which spans across 24,000 square miles and affects half of Texas’ population. Much like a report card you would get in school, the indicators are each graded on a scale of “A” to “F” with an additional “I” grade when there is

insufficient data. They are grouped into six critical issues – habitat, water quality, coastal change, wildlife, and pollution events and sources. In addition to the grades, the report card shares ways for the public to support the Bay through activities like the Morgan’s Point community beach clean-up on September 23. The upcoming event strives to raise public awareness and educate citizens about the source of debris, while reducing the amount of offshore dumping along the coast. To participate, visit www.galvbay.org and sign up on upcoming events calendar. To learn more about the grades the six critical issues received on this year’s Galveston Bay Report Card, visit www. galvbaygrade.org.

f you’ve never done a ‘Cast and Blast’ trip, definitely put it on your bucket list for this coming fall season. It’s an all day theme park for the outdoor enthusiast. A seemingly never ending day of celebrating being able to both hunt AND fish in our great state. First of all, red fishing on the flats of the Upper Laguna Madre is at its peak during September and the good trout start to feed again on the edges of the flats. With the water starting to cool and having a couple of crisp nights in September, both species will begin to feed on abundant fall forage and will Photo Courtesy Baffin Bay Rod and Gun begin to put on weight as their metabolism begins to shift with the cooling water temperatures. Nothing beats being in the outdoors this time of year and the flats are empty. Hunting either dove or ducks in the fall will start Sept 1 in the Central Zone and Sept 22 in the South Zone. Things to thing about to make a trip like this successful; pick an outfit that has a close proximity to both the fields holding the most birds, and the best fishing grounds. That’s where south Texas can truly shine. At Baffin Bay Rod and Gun you are in the thick of some of the best hunting opportunities and because of the way Baffin Bay feeds inland, you will also be right on the water and in some of the best hands available for both hunting and fishing. Catching in the Rain

I

had the pleasure of fishing with one of my best friends Craig Rader and his father-in-law, Chuck, last weekend. The morning started off rather unique as Craig, who is normally very punctual, slept straight through his alarm. I would accept part of the blame for that since he was enjoying a few adult beverages at my house the night before but he knows better than to be late for fishing. The problem was we were running Craig’s boat that day so Chuck and I were left standing in the driveway. Apparently even Craig’s dog had a rough night as knocking on every door and window on the house didn’t even illicit a bark. After waiting thirty minutes I decided to go check on my parents to see how the crabbing was going since they were just about 10min away from Craig’s house. They already had a little over a dozen nice blue crabs when I got the phone call from Craig asking, “where you at?” Well…I’m eating donuts and catching a few crabs since you couldn’t wake up! I met Craig and Chuck at Walmart in Bridge City and we were off, albeit a late start but we were going to have a great time regardless. Spending so much time guiding it is rare to get a day to fish with buddies or family so I wasn’t going to miss out on this opportunity. We headed out to the jetties first but the bite was too slow for me to stick around. I wanted to fish a couple spots in the channel so we moved on. We wound up spending the next several hours in one location in part due to a driving rain but mainly since the redfish were going crazy. Craig was catching them on Down South’s Chicken of the “C” Southern Shad and Chuch was throwing a Gambler Flapping Shad. I threw both a Texas Tackle Factory Killer Flats Minnow and Egret’s Wedgetail. Color did not seem to be nearly as important as the size

jighead we were using. We got way more bites using a 1/4oz jighead versus the 1/8oz jighead. The majority of the redfish were in the slot but we also let quite a few oversized fish go as well. I was able to sneak a few of the upper slot fish back into the water while Chuck wasn’t paying attention. I didn’t mess up his meat haul too bad though as I think we ended up boxing 24 or 26 fish total, I can’t remember. The landing part would have been much easier but Craig forgot the net, I suppose that was due to his oversleeping and hangover but we still did alright! After the rain the redfish bite slowed so we made another move to go catch trout before calling it a day. Unfortunately, with all the rain our phones stayed in dry storage for the trip so we ended up with only one picture from the water but the memory of the trip won’t soon be forgotten!

Fishing on the Blue Fin H

Hello! My name is DJ Kuchar, Captain of the Pescado Loco. We offshore fish out of Freeport, TX. This year our fishing has been incredible, from catching limits of Cobia, schools of Dorado, and King fish. We have been chasing shrimp boats all over our side of the Gulf and are finding them to be anchored up 50-60 miles off the Freeport Jetties. The boats started out pretty slow but picked up significantly over the past few weeks. The blue water has moved inshore bringing the kings into shallower waters and also bringing the black fin tuna inshore. We have had a few good black fin trips so far and hope to keep them coming. Despite the few storms we had this month we managed to run about 40- 60 miles offshore where we have seen a few blue water rips inshore holding Dorado and Cobia. We have seen a lot of Sargassum grass here lately; we always make sure to check them out since they are known to have visitors such as Cobia and Dorado. Looking forward to seeing y’all out on the water! Catch’em up.!

GALVESTON BAY FISHING REPORT By: Capt.Craig Lambert

S

eptember is always one of my favorite months because the days are getting cooler and the fish are getting hungrier. This month is the beginning of the transition from summer to autumn and this keeps the fish moving around and heading to different areas as the bait they are following adjusts to the cooling water temperatures. Migrating shrimp are starting to show up in areas like Trinity Bay and Tabbs Bay so I expect good things to come in those areas very soon. Redfish have been thick in the San Jacinto river lately. They are usually found on rip-rap walls along the channel and areas near underwater pipelines. The well pads in Trinity are hot right now and are producing best on outgoing tides with artificials.

S

The North shoreline of East Bay is also beginning to really shine and produce fish with scattered bird action during mid-day. West Bay continues to offer a decent croaker bite but that will fade as October approaches. Right now the whole bay system is in great shape and things are looking really good for fall. The croaker bite is finally starting to die off for the year and the live bait of choice will definitely be shrimp by the end of the month. However, this is definitely one of the better months to be throwing artificial lures. Consistent weather patterns, light winds and good tides are producing large boxes on soft plastics. Darker plastics on 1/4oz and 3/8 z jigs have been working well for me and the trout are just juiced up. We have been losing a few trout from acrobatic fish spitting the lure back at us. The jetty systems are hot right now with the redfish spawning run kicking in and lots of speckled trout and gulf trout action on the rocks. The deep holes are where the bigger redfish are at and the action has been non stop as long as the tides are moving. Light winds and good weather will make for some very crowded weekend conditions but there is plenty of space for everyone with several miles of fishing area to choose from. Popping corks with long leaders up against the rocks will produce plenty of panfish along with a few speckled trout and Spanish mackerel. Try using a 40 or 50 lb monofilament shock leader to keep from losing the spanish mackerel. There are some big sharks running around the jetties this time of year so don’t be surprised if you hook up with a monster all of a sudden. We have some great weather ahead to look forward to so be safe out there and remember to always take a kid fishing. Capt. Craig Lambert | Galvestoninshorefishing.com | 832.338.4570

ello from Matagorda...Offshore Fishing is in full swing now. With the opening of the gulf shrimping season the charter boats out of Matagorda are bringing in a few Blackfin Tuna from shrimp boats 180 ft plus deep water. Mahi mahi are making a good showing now. Look for anything floating and check it for mahi. It don’t take much to attract baitfish which in turn attracts mahi and other species as well like ling , tripletail and Wahoo. Also check around the shrimp boats anchored during the day, been reports of

good mahi being seen around them as well. We have been catching Kingfish, Ling , Mahi Mahi and Grouper in the past couple weeks. Our books are full throughout August, but we have a few open days in September. Calm seas and big catches !! Flounder Tips & Tactics H

ey there friends I hope that you are having a great month and also maybe catching or gigging a few flatfish. At the beginning of the month I was having spectacular 30 fish nights and it was happening in about four or five hours. Although the fish were plentiful, they were only highly concentrated in certain areas. Bunched up with three to four fish in the same sand pocket. A few were in the twelve and thirteen inch range but the rest were mainly 2 to 4 pound fish. They were holding very tight on the ledges with a foot drop or more. As the tides steadily started to rise the fish were right up on shore pretty much, but after this last week I believe every word of the saying “ you won’t find the flounder in a full moon “. I used to say that didn’t apply to me and I guess I just had not experienced what other fisherman had. We gigged three nights straight as the full moon came out and we maybe found four or five fish but did not see hardly any. The good thing was the ones that we did find were very good sized, I would say 18-24 inches and 3-5 pounds. Goodness they were hard to come by those nights, from now on I will just try to check the moon rise and see if I can beat those super beams of light. Getting out before then at least gives you a fair chance for a few hours because when that moon is over head good luck. There is at least one positive thing that results from the full moon and that is the elevated tides. A lot of the flounder we stuck were sitting in between oyster beds in those little sand splotches that were sort of hollowed out. Another thing was that the fish were covered Me with a good haul of flounder before the moon! like they had been there for hours because their backs looked exactly like the surrounding ocean floor. When I have been rod and reel fishing, most of the time I am going to be throwing a tandem rig chicken boy lure in that sick hot pink color. It lights up in every water

M color. The reason I use a double rig is because it allows you to stay on the bottom while also getting to use two different colors if for some reason your not sure what to use. I will throw a quarter ounce with a single rig but with a dual rig I throw two 1/8 ounce hell razor jig heads. Working the lure a bit slower right now has landed me more fish than being in a race to get my bait in. With a live Me with a couple of fatties from the last trip. bait rig just let it roll across the bottom while slowly pulling it in so you can cover as much ground as possible. Still sticking to inlets off of main channels and working the back of the channel when the tide is coming in and work the channel edge while it is rolling out. Do not forget that I’m working on my you tube channel “Flounder Professor Outdoors” and have one video up with plenty more to come, so subscribe and enjoy. Thank you to all of my sponsors chicken boy lures, hell razor jig heads, fin addict angler, stinky pants fishing, hookspit rods, redtail republic, Kelley wiggler, legend popping corks, nacho daddy spoons, thump kings, ardent reels and Salt Thugz Apparel. RECIPE OF THE MONTH

EASY CEVICHE - SPANISH MACKEREL One of the best catches we have this time of year is the Spanish Mackerel. This fish is a lot like the king fish except it is smaller and faster, so the meat is almost like a small tuna. You can cook the mackerel in the same way as you cook most tunas, but this recipe is a little different and is the easiest one yet! If you like sushi or ceviche you know the seafood in these dishes are often raw fish. The difference with ceviche is that the fish has been cured in citrus, like a lime or lemon. Well ladies and gentlemen that is what we bring you today! Ceviche Spanish Mackerel for the beginner!

YOU WILL NEED

• Lemon Juice/Lime Juice • Spanish Mackerel

• Soy sauce and/or worcestershire sauce • A bag for storage!

Let’s begin! Place a fully filleted Mackerel, with no scales, into the storage bag. Fill the bag with the citrus of lemon/lime, until all the fish is covered. Add your choice of sauce and close the bag tightly (you may double bag it). Shake it around to make sure the sauce mixes well with the juice and refrigerate for 15-30 minutes. You may marinate longer for larger filets) but careful not to overcook; it can overpower the fish taste. Depending on what your end goal is, also depends on what juice and sauce you use in the mixture. Lime and worcestershire is a great combination to add with pico de gallo and chips. Lemon and soy will be great with steamed rice, fried onions, and avocado; the choice is yours! If you have enjoyed these recipes, or have some of your own, take a picture and tag us on Facebook! If you want to share your own recipe, let us know!! If you prepared one of our recipes, tag us with your MONSTA Meal by including your: catch, a snapshot and recipe name. Until next time MONSTAFishers! Be safe out there and keep those lines tight!! Blessings from your Out Cast Fishin Family

Effects of a Total Solar Eclipse on Galveston Bay

A

very rare and spectacular occurrence is upon us, on August 21st, 2017, most of the U.S. will be in the direct path of a total solar eclipse, which hasn’t occurred in almost a century. The last time an eclipse was visible as a partial or total solar eclipse by the entire continental U.S. was on June 8th, 1918. The total eclipse or direct path will go from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. Most of the other states that are not under the direct path of the eclipse will see no less that 50% coverage, or a partial eclipse. Here in Texas, we will see the moon cover over half of the sun, while those in Florida will see about 75% coverage. While this event is no doubt fascinating and a wonder to behold, what does that mean for the Gulf Coast? Several effects will transpire during the eclipse and since it falls on a Monday, it shouldn’t really effect our weekend routine, however, some interesting and unusual occurrences may happen. The fishing patterns and tides being the most important: Fish are undoubtably effected by many of their environment’s subtle variables, and a solar eclipse is no different. Although the eclipse will only last a few minutes, the normal patterns that our Texas game fish follow will change. According to a study from the University of Moncton in Canada, species that are in shallow enough water to be effected by differences in light from night and day will think that it is dawn and begin to exhibit night-time behaviors like hunkering down and retreating to reefs and deep cuts. Once the eclipse has passed, fish will resume their normal activity after a few minutes.

“…various reef fishes were followed in the wild during a 1998 total solar eclipse at Pinta Island, in the Galapagos. As the eclipse progressed, the fish descended from the water column and retreated to crevices within the reef, where they remained hidden for the duration of totality. This is typical twilight and night time behavior. The fish did not appear to go to sleep however, for they resumed their normal activities within three minutes of the end of totality. The only diurnal species that did not exhibit night time behavior during totality was the surgeonfish Prionurus laticlavius, which stopped grazing and formed schools that swam erratically with apparent alarm. Altogether, the latest case notwithstanding, these observations suggest that light intensity is fairly important in eliciting twilight and night time behavior.” -Stéphan G. Reebs Université de Moncton, Canada 2007-2013 (How do fishes react to total solar eclipses?) Tides will be the biggest factor for most of us in our day to day out on the water. Normally, the sun and the moon compete for the earth’s tides, pulling the oceans toward them with the gravity that they influence. The moon has the most effect on our tides which means that it creates the larger, more substantial tide influx because of its relative size and distance to the earth. Because the sun and the moon will be aligned during this brief time, we can expect a higher than normal high tide, while those on the other side of the planet will see an lower than normal low tide. Higher than normal tides will be experienced for several weeks leading up to and following the eclipse as the moon and the sun begin to align, especially of

those in the upper bay. Just be aware of this and be sure to make any arrangements for your home on the water, or while launching at the boat ramp, or hanging at your normal fishing spot. For some of us, it will be a thrilling, once in a lifetime experience to share with our family and friends, so go out and get yourself a pair of solar viewing glasses, they can be found for as little as a few dollars a set. On Aug. 21st. go outside and catch a glimpse of one of natures wonders. Visit Saltwater-Recon.com to see the local effects on the bay in real time. Be safe and enjoy the view.

Attacking Family Values - for Money

T

oday’s families are vastly different than years ago. Even sitting together for family meals has become infrequent or rushed. The family dinner where parents engage children in conversation and instill the family’s values occurs only infrequently in many families. Schedules are hectic with children often being raised by parental timesharing. Even where both parents are under the same roof - today’s economy calls often for long hours, thus still an absent parent. Family dinner time is frequently sacrificed. Filling the void are hundreds of television channels and the internet . . .which influence our children as never before. Even cautious families are constantly fighting the invisible magnetism of internet information that steadily infiltrates our homes. Fortunately for many, one thing hasn’t changed. Kids still anticipate the weekend and a chance to go fishing. For the parents, this creates an increasingly important opportunity to pass along a family heritage. This is “real time” with Dad and Mom - focused time. It is a final bastion of uninterrupted family communications and provides a shared joy of accomplishment, experienced together, every time a prize is reeled in. Some would call this “old fashioned quality family time”. Along with the excursion comes solid conversations, not only during the actual day, but even as the trip is planned and the parent and child participate together in its preparations - building excitement for the upcoming fishing day. These one-on-one days open a myriad of opportunities to “just talk”. They allow parent-child interaction that has too often become lost -- with the television and the internet totally uninvolved for the day! Time with our children is precious and critically important. Fishing presents an attraction so strong that kids actually shut down their PC’s and video games. They want to go fishing! But . . . an attack threatens this remaining opportunity for one-on-one, parent-child family time. For-profit corporations are actively attempting to minimize your family’s fishing rights in a selfish monetary pursuit. They want to take away your access to fish so as to leave more harvest from the publicly-owned fishery for themselves. Today’s attack is focused on squeezing recreational family fishing to expand their profits. These corporations, namely commercial fishing corporations and federal for-hire charter fishing boat operators, are pouring a seemingly endless stream of money into political campaigns, lobbyists, and frivolous litigation. Their objective is to dominate, for themselves, the harvest of the publiclyowned fishery resources in federal waters. By minimizing the recreational family fishermen’s access to the fishery, it leaves more for them - all to maximize their profits! It is critically important for families, recreational fishermen, fishing guides, non-federal charter boat operators, and the businesses that depend upon these groups to unite in efforts to protect access for families to fish. Principally, two organizations support the for-profit corporations in their efforts to minimize or drive recreational fishing out of existence in order to capture the full harvest of the publics’ fishery resources for themselves.

16 GALVESTON & UPPER COAST

CAM_GALV_0917.indd 16

SEPTEMBER 2017

They want preferential access to harvest and sell the public’s resource or, even more lusciously, to sell their preferential access without ever going fishing — all for their personal profits. The organizations are named innocuously to create confusion; the “Environmental Defense Fund” and the “Ocean Conservancy”. They extend their tentacles by supporting front groups with names like “The Gulf of Mexico Reef Fish Shareholders’ Alliance” and the “Charter Fishermen’s Association”. They use their monetary resources to thwart efforts to improve the public’s access to its own fisheries resources though aggressive litigation and financial contributions to “influence” politicians, elections and political appointments which further their objectives. On the positive and hopeful side, however, are bills presently in both chambers of Congress to establish fairness and equity in fisheries management. These could level the playing field for family and recreational fishermen. Accordingly, they are VERY important. The U.S. House of Representatives bill, #HR2023, is termed to as the “Modernizing Recreational Fisheries Management Act of 2017“ or more commonly the “Modern Fish Act”. We appreciate that it has bi-partisan cosponsorship by Representatives Garret Graves (R-La), Gene Green (D–Tx), Daniel Webster (R-Fl), and Rob Whittman (R–Va). In the Senate, the bill is called the same and also bi-partisan; it is cosponsored by Senators Roger Wicker (R–Miss), Bill Nelson (D–Fl), Brian Schatz (R–Hawaii), John Kennedy (R–La) and Joe Manchin (D–W. Va). If your Congressman or Senator is not co-sponsoring this protection for the fishing rights of families, they need to hear from you. Call and ask them why not. Only your phone call can make a difference. Keep your eye on the prize - that fish at the end of the line on your child’s rod. And someday, your grandchild’s rod. Make the call. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT HOOKER ELECTRIC Hooker Electric strives to stay ahead of the curve by listening to what fishermen think might be lacking in the current market or what options would help make their fishing easier and more successful. Last month at the ICAST Show in Orlando, Hooker released their version of an electric reel with an auto stop feature. Currently, this modification is available for the Shimano Tiagra 80 and 130 and the Penn International 80 VSW. Soon, it will be available for the Tiagra 50 and Penn 130. The main benefit of the auto stop feature is that the reel can be set to stop retrieving line at any interval, including just before your terminal tackle reaches the rod tip. The auto stop feature can be used for swordfishing, deep dropping, pulling dredges and teasers or even high-speed trolling. Another great benefit is that you can control the reel from your iPhone through Hooker Electric’s app, ReelTime. All Hooker Electric reels come with full variable speed control that allows the angler to determine how fast line is retrieved. While the 16, 20 and 30 kite reel models operate on 12 volt systems, the 50, 70, 80 and 130 models are available for both 12 and 24 VDC systems and don’t require a converter box. Hooker Electric reels are the fastest on the market, saving time and sometimes money. In addition, all models retain the benefit of the OEM handle for when the angler is feeling a bit sporty and wants to hand crank on a sea monster.

Spectacular Salmon Season is On! By Frank Geremski

L

ake Ontario consistently produces some of the best Great Lakes salmon catches, and this year’s fishing has been nothing short of spectacular. Significant early summer rains brought high water, which stimulated a feeding frenzy for giant king salmon. Recent summers have endured dry weather, low water and thinner salmon runs. Both lake and river health was questioned during these dry years, but cool and plentiful rains have done wonders for this fishery. It’s prime time to tangle with beasts that have been tipping the scales over 30 pounds! The experts are excited about lake and river conditions in New York’s Oswego County, holder of 12 New York state and world records. Bob Mallory is an expert on Lake Ontario and Oswego Harbor, where he pursues his passion for trout and salmon. Here are Bob’s thoughts on the 2017 Salmon Season: “Fishing in the lake out of the port of Oswego has Tom Fernandez of The continued to get better every Tailwater Lodge with a trophy week as the season has proearly season King Salmon! gressed. The number of fish being hooked and caught right now is nothing short of amazing and points to a great river season. Trolling in the lake with downriggers and Dipsy Divers with flashers and flies has been my go-to method. In low light conditions, white eChip flashers with A-Tom-Mik Hammer flies is producing. In overcast conditions, try greens; brighter days favor chrome and Mountain Dew colors. As fish get closer to the pier head, J-plugs will produce.” Tom Fernandez and the team at The Tailwater Lodge on New York’s Salmon River have developed a premier fishing resort. Huge salmon can attract a crowd when they blast up shallow runs and riffles on this picturesque river. The Tailwater’s 35 acres of private access solves that issue, and they provide a top-notch fishing concierge service. Tom is looking forward to an early salmon season with these words: “As the nights get colder in Altmar, we can only think about one thing, trophy king salmon exploding outside our back door in the Schoolhouse Pool. This year we are expecting the run to start earlier than we have seen in the past few years, with kings and cohos in the river system from September through October until we get deep into steelhead season. The high levels of Lake Ontario, the consistent good flow through the Salmon River and fish staging outside Oswego and Mexico Point have all the necessary ingredients for one heck of a salmon season. If I were looking for a time to experience the trophy fish on the Salmon River with thinner crowds, warmer temps and explosive fish, I would think about making the early run this year.” To truly experience the salmon spawning process and have a great adventure with the family, the Salmon River Fish Hatchery in Altmar, N.Y. will hold their annual open house Sept. 23, where you can view the complete spawning cycle. To learn more about Oswego County fishing, go to www.visitoswegocounty/fishing.com. Phil Belsito of The Angler Magazine of West Michigan said Lake Michigan fish are large and plentiful also. Go to www.theanglermag.com, then select Great Lakes Region for reports from both Lake Michigan and Lake Ontario.

By Dave Maney - Fowler’s Pharmacy

T

he quick answer to this question is “probably not.” The ideal lens for the visual rigors of hunting is an amber lens, sometimes referred to as a copper lens. Not to make this more complicated than it needs to be, but a green lens is sometimes referred to as a G-15 or gray lens. Depending on the time of day and sun coverage, the gray (green) lens may also be a preferred option for hunting. As a hunter, I prefer the low-light sensitive amber lens. The majority of my opportunities seem to come either during the early morning or late afternoon to dusk windows, when light enhancement is preferable to light dispersal. The requirements of your fishing sunglasses are starkly different than your hunting glasses. Looking deep into the water is directly in contrast to seeing long range with limited light. Selecting the perfect hunting sunglasses normally takes a bit of trial and error. My best advice when selecting a new pair of hunting sunglasses is to purchase them from a dealer with a liberal return policy. Finding your best fit and lens requires a little work, but once you find your perfect pair you will find that they improve and enhance your hunting experience. If you need any further advice on selecting your perfect hunting lens, always feel free to contact me or anyone here at Fowler’s. We know sunglasses. Fowler’s Pharmacy, 864-288-5905; 864-288-5920

n late July, the attention of national news media turned briefly to a huge mako shark caught off the coast of New Jersey. The 12-foot-long, 926-pound shortfin mako outweighed the current state record by 70 pounds, but because the rod passed hands during the fight it will not be officially recognized as a new record. The big shark broke a rod in the fight to bring it aboard the 44-foot charter boat Jenny Lee, captained by Dave Bender. It happened during an overnight charter, drifting in 1,500 feet of water 100-miles out of Manasquan Inlet near the famous Hudson Canyon. Shortly after excitement began to fizzle over this great catch, information was released on a new tagging study that suggests shortfin mako sharks might be experiencing overfishing in the western North Atlantic. Researchers from Nova Southeastern University’s Guy Harvey Research Institute (GHRI), the University of Rhode Island and other colleagues followed 40 satellite-tagged sharks in real time and 12 of them, or 30 percent, were captured in fisheries. This information suggests the fishing mortality rates of shortfin mako sharks might be considerably higher than previously estimated using catches reported by fishermen, according to the press release. And despite their small sample size, researchers questioned the reliability of traditional data collection methods and expressed a serious concern over whether the current level of fishery catches for shortfin makos in the North Atlantic are sustainable.

FLY FISHING

Lefty’s Deceiver By Carlos Hidalgo

A

lthough he would deny it, Lefty Kreh is a legend. With great knowledge (he has authored or co-authored over 30 books and hundreds of magazine articles), boundless energy (he has performed countless lectures and casting demonstrations over the last 60+ years), down-home humor (a dumb person would “pick up a snake to kill a stick”), and showmanship (at casting demos, he finds a pretty woman and makes a cast that curls the fly line around her neck), Lefty has done more to popularize fly fishing than any other person in the last century. He has fished with Fidel Castro, Ted Williams and Ernest Hemmingway, but he hasn’t just witnessed fly fishing history, he has created it. His innovative fly casting techniques are used by millions of us today. Oh yeah, he also developed Lefty’s Deceiver, the best fly pattern ever devised. Lefty tied the first Deceiver during the late 1950s. He wanted a fly that was easy to cast, didn’t foul, looked like a baitfish and had great action in the water. The pattern can be easily described: a tail made up of several matching hackle or saddle feathers with a bucktail collar. Add flash material to either or both, eyes to

the head and some type of red material for the throat, as needed. The hook shank beneath the collar (the body) can be wrapped with the tying thread or a flashy material, like mylar tinsel or Diamond Braid. By the way, Lefty says the key to the pattern is to tie the collar at least as long as the rear of the hook, which keeps the hackle tail from wrapping around the hook. In appropriate sizes and colors, Lefty’s pattern has deceived just about every fish that swims, from four-inch bream to 400-pound billfish. Lefty’s Deceiver has even graced a U.S. Postal stamp. Lefty’s favorite Deceiver colors are chartreuse/white and yellow/ chartreuse. I tie them in many sizes and colors, and my favorite is tied in a Firetiger color scheme. This color works very well for many saltwater fish in sizes 1/0 to 3/0. It has also been very successful for me for peacock bass and largemouth bass in south Florida in size 2. I imagine smallies would jump all over it, too. Lefty’s Deceiver (Firetiger) Hook - Mustad 34007 or similar, size 2 to 3/0 Thread - fluorescent yellow Tail - two yellow and one yellow grizzly hackle on each side, topped with yellow Krystal Flash Body - yellow thread or Diamond Braid Collar - yellow bucktail with yellow Krystal flash and a small yellow grizzly hackle on each side, topped with green Krystal Flash and green bucktail Throat - orange bucktail, as long as the collar Head - fluorescent yellow, with painted orange/black eye, covered with five-minute epoxy Contact Carlos at cah6620@gmail.com to submit a pattern for consideration in this column or to order his book, “South Florida’s Peacock Bass.”

By John Rice

This is a simple tie and a very effective pattern for trout everywhere. Soft hackles are basically emerger patterns. They do not belong on the streambed like nymphs, so this fly should be dropped a foot or so off a nymph so it can suspend itself higher in the water column where an emerger belongs. Thread: 8/0 olive Abdomen: Olive goose biot Thorax: Tan superfine dubbing Hackle: Hungarian partridge Head: 8/0 Olive thread Hook: 1X long, size 18 Tiemco 3761 John Rice guides with Blackhawk Fly Fishing, which offers exceptional fishing for trophy trout in the north Georgia mountains.
