Overall Best of Show - Bote Rover
E
ach year, the fishing industry and anglers eagerly await ICAST, the world’s largest sportfishing trade show, to see what new rods, reels, lures, apparel and gadgets companies will roll out in the show’s New Product Showcase. For the gear-heads out there, it never disappoints. This year, 1,263 products, accessories and apparel were entered by 280 companies to compete for Best of Category awards in 26 different categories. The products were viewed and voted on at ICAST in Orlando on July 13. This year’s big winner was the Bote Rover, which took home Overall Best of Show. It also took top honors in the Boats and Watercraft category. It is a truly innovative little SUP/Skiff hybrid, powered by a small outboard to get you where you’re going. Once you get there, it gives you all the skinny-water and stealth capabilities of an SUP. The following is a list of all the other cool and innovative products that earned top honors in their categories. Boating Accessories: Yeti Coolers LoadOut Bucket With the LoadOut Bucket, Yeti has done for the lowly 5-gallon bucket what it did for the cooler. This injection-molded workhorse is Yeti tough and designed to exceed any need from the boat to the backyard. Eyewear: Costa Sunrise Mirror Lens Sunrise Mirror lenses are designed for low-light conditions. They let in 30 percent of the available light while maintaining 97 percent polarization for optimal performance and eye protection at dawn, dusk or on cloudy days.
Huk Attack
Footwear: Huk Performance Fishing Attack The Huk Attack is the most engineered, purpose-built fishing shoe ever created. It brings performance features for the serious fisherman with unique traction, bullet-proof durability and all-day comfort and support. Giftware: The Catch and Release Print Shop Actual Size An alternative to taxidermy, these fish prints are created to the exact length of your catch and stamped with your name and information about your catch. Lifestyle Apparel: Frogg Toggs Prym1 Series Pilot II Jacket and Bibs The Frogg Toggs Prym1 Series Pilot II Jacket and Bibs is the company’s camouflage style of its bombproof Pilot II. It is available in shoreline blue, silver mist and blackout options. Technical Apparel: Frogg Toggs Sierran Transition Wader A zippered, flip-out chest pocket, large multi-function pocket and exterior fly storage area allow these waders to fill double-duty as a chest pack for storage of fly fishing gear. Electronics: Humminbird Solix 15 Chirp Mega SI GPS Humminbird has achieved improved detail and target separation with Chirp Digital Sonar. With touch screen or keypad interface, the screen can be customized and viewed with up to four panels. Fishing Accessory: Yeti Coolers Panga Duffel The Panga Duffel is a hardcore drybag designed to withstand brutal treatment and be completely watertight. It is fully submersible, and Yeti called it a gear fortress. Alaska’s Can’t Miss
Freshwater Fishing Adventures
By Christopher Batin
A
laska sportfishing offers wilderness realized rather than imagined and quickens the pulse in all types of anglers, from panfishermen to veteran world anglers. When an angler returns from Alaska and shares an evening on the flats or at the catfish hole with friends, talk quickly turns from big catfish stories to Alaska fishing adventures. The reason is obvious. If you are searching for action, the roostertails of spray generated by a 50-pound chinook salmon on a five-jump run through shallow water will satisfy your need. If the sight of huge shad migrations have you tying on a lure in finger-fumbling fashion, wait until you view pristine rivers teeming with five species of Pacific salmon that are counted not by the thousands, but by the millions. Valdez anglers see the return of as many as 11 million pink salmon to intertidal waters. Choosing the right Alaska adventure is complex, with its various runs, timing and weather. Knowing when to go, where to go and with whom is key. I’ve fished and covered Alaska’s fishing for more than 42 years, and I’ve helped countless anglers find the trip best suited for them. Each angler has separate needs. In the freshwater realm, here are some of the top considerations for can’t miss adventure, fish-hooking action and personal service worthy of the Alaska experience. Interior Alaska
If you’re looking for a quiet place to fish, with scenery, comfortable cabins and located far from the crowds, drive down to Denali National Park and visit Kirk Martakis at Fish Denali. He offers several lakes on private property that offer about 3,000 wild rainbow trout to 31 inches and trophy-sized grayling. They cruise the lake like sharks, and the clear water makes sight casting to them with single-hook jigs, nymphs or topwater lures too much fun. It’s some of the best lake rainbow fishing I’ve experienced. Cozy, fully equipped cabins located at lakeside offer everything you’ll need for a multi-day stay, including Wi-Fi and multiple bedrooms. It’s a good choice for large families, fishing buddies or couples who want a quiet, laid-back trip with some of Alaska’s best scenery (www.Fishdenali.com). Float fishing offers a change of scenery around each turn in the river as well as great fishing opportunities. Alaska River Tours offers remote float trips along the road system, with neither the crowds nor the expense. Depending on the season, owner Reinhard “Reini” Neuhauser chooses the best rivers for grayling, trout, sheefish, pike, salmon and char. On overnight excursions, he provides tents, camping gear and boats. You arrive ready to fish. I recommend the overnight float, which makes the most of Alaska’s 19-plus hours of daylight. Fish when it’s light, and float during the remaining five hours from midnight to the 4 a.m. during the twilight period, when it’s still light enough to read. It’s a heady trip that is only surpassed by his camps and food served (www.akrivertours.com). The Kenai Peninsula For a quick day of fishing, the Kenai River offers big king salmon to 70plus pounds that sizzle drags. Guide Joe Connors was my instructor back in 10

my college days, and he’s still as tough on catching fish as he was on me learning public speaking. He’s a long-time Kenai veteran, and his guides at Big Sky Charter and Fish Camp have a long-time, sterling reputation for helping anglers of all skill levels catch silver and sockeye salmon, char and rainbow trout in the 25- to 34-inch range. He offers comfortable riverside cabins, evening barbecues and a quiet place to enjoy the river (www.kenaiguide.com). Bristol Bay Bristol Bay lodges offer the crème de le crème of Alaska sportfishing in these western Alaska waters, where tens of millions of salmon move into various watersheds each year. A couple hundred lodges and camps offer a variety of services, from bare-basic outfitted trips to spectacular lodges with fly-out fishing, shore lunches, and gourmet meals. Mike Gorton runs Goodnews River Lodge, the only lodge located on the 400-milelong river that offers some of the best boat-accessible river fishing for silver salmon, rainbow trout and char you’ll find in the region. It is a mixed-bag fishery, where no matter the weather, you can fish. There wasn’t a stretch of the Goodnews when friend Mark Wade and I fished that didn’t have silver salmon hammering our flies and big rainbow trout swarming in numbers like piranhas. The guides have great people skills and are skilled in their knowledge of the river (www.goodnewsriverlodge. com). Southeast Alaska In southeast Alaska, Marlin Benedict, of Fish Wrangell, offers freshwater fishing for salmon, cutthroat trout and char in the remote, beautiful jungle streams of the Tongass National Forest. You don’t walk long distances here, as most of the good fishing is within a half mile or so of saltwater, which also guarantees fish as fresh as they come. The most fun in fishing these shallow waters is watching salmon attacking your fly or lure. Personal service is topnotch. (www.fishwrangell.com). Chris Batin is editor of The Alaska Angler and author of nine award-winning books and Alaska fishing DVDs. He is featured as an Alaska legend in a new book, “Alaska’s Greatest Outdoor Legends,” published by the University of Alaska Press. For over 40 years, he has run The Alaska Angler Information Service. Discover more at www.AlaskaAngler.com.

HAMMERHEAD TUFF GRAB AMARRA
Hammerhead Tuff Grab spearfishing gloves are the toughest warmwater spearfishing gloves available. Tuff Grabs were designed in Hawaii for use in asspetto spearfishing, which involves the diver descending to the bottom and scratching up substrate to attract inquisitive fish. In this style of ambush diving, normal diving gloves only last weeks. Tuff Grabs last months, saving the diver money in the long run. A full 5-finger, 2mm neoprene glove with reinforced flexible amarra (synthetic suede) palm and double-stitched gripped reinforcements offer exceptional durability without sacrificing dexterity. Anti-Slip rubberized grips are sewn into each fingertip and palm, leaving the knuckles open for flexibility. Large batting-glove style Velcro enclosures keep the glove tight. Tuff Grabs are available in both Deep Reef and Pelagic Shatter camouflage to help make you the ultimate predator.

MAVERICK DARIAN YOKOOJI HYBRID SPEARGUNS Darian Yokooji made his first speargun back in 1993 because he didn’t have money to buy one. Since then, his Hawaiian-made, handcrafted guns have become highly sought after by spearfishers around the world. All of Yokooji’s guns are handcrafted in small batches to ensure quality workmanship, and he uses only the finest materials to construct beautiful, durable spearguns that perform to the highest level. August is American Adventures month. American Adventures Month was founded in 2015 by its spokesperson, American Adventurer Peter Kulkkula. It is the celebration of vacationing in the Americas. Many of us often take for granted the great amount of activities and adventures that are available to us within this wonderful country. You don’t need to travel to a foreign country to explore new territory. Give yourself the opportunity to try something new, even if it is right in your own town! Here are a few activities to try out during American Adventures Month: • Explore the waters– Whether you live near an ocean, river, or lake, there is always some sort of water sport available to try. Some ideas include, kayaking, surfing, boating, fishing, canoeing, paddle boarding, water skiing, tubing, jet skiing, etc. • Wander through national parks/forests– There are over 400 national parks and forests in the US alone. Chances are, you have one near you. Why not spend a day hiking, camping, and exploring nature within one of the many beautiful parks or forests located near you. • Road trip– Drive around, spend quality time with friends or family and explore areas you haven’t seen before. Everyone needs a vacation once in a while to relieve themselves from the stresses of life. For many of us, August marks the last chance to get away before the end of the summer. Whether you’re looking for excitement, a quiet space, or learning something new, your adventure awaits -celebrate what America has to offer. ummer has kicked off and Surf Fishing is back in action. Surf fishing is known for annual run of good speckled trout fishing along Texas beach fronts. However, anglers looking to wade the surf, piers and jetties will find more than just trout including redfish, Spanish mackerel, jacks, ladyfish, and tarpon during the summer months up and down the Texas coast. No matter what part of the Texas coast you’re fishing, passes, “cut,” or any vein that provides water exchange between a bay and the open Gulf is the best areas to fish. Be sure to always look at the weather forecast, surf cams, tide chart, and wave height predictions. As well as, the looking at the wind and wave heights to calm a bit. I personally use the Surfcams. Saltwater Recon is one you can use www.saltwater-recon.com for Galveston. It’s a great way to look at the marine forecast. But to always be safe way you can use the National Data Buoy Center Website. When fishing the surf in the mornings, evening or night remember to fish the first gut is the best choice. This gut is where most bait fish so most predator fish cruise down the gut. The morning bite will usually last an hour after sunrise and then move back into deeper water. During the lowlight period, louder topwaters are heard over the sound of the waves and results are more productive. Darker colors provide a silhouette in the morning. Soft-plastic baits can produce a vibration which attract fish as well. But be sure to let the plastic go to the bottom of the gut and work it to the top. Once the sun comes up and its bright out try changing the color to chrome and choice a lure that would give a reflective flash in the water. The chrome and blue super spook is one of my favorite to

use in the surf. Silver and gold spoons are always a good choice as well. There are many choices to choose from so go with what you are comfortable with using. Always remember that safety is the first precaution and with the warmer months the stingrays are more abundance, jellyfish and sharks, so be sure to shuffle your feet and keep your stringers tied with a slip knot for easy access to release and way from your body. ell the fishing has been great down here on the coastal bend. It’s the second week of July and the wind has finally laid down. That tropical storm at the end of June bulled up our tides which resulted in some good fishing. That extra water pushed those fish up on the shoreline, I was catching trout in my redfish spots in 2’ of water that’s normally under 1’ deep. Now that the wind is starting to calm down, I’ll start fishing some open water reefs and the deeper drop offs along the ICW. Last night was the full moon, the days are starting to get shorter, I hate to say it but we are half way through summer! If you are wanting to go fishing, this is your reminder. Play hooky! It means to skip out on work or school and go fishing. Tony Gonzalez Inshore Fishing | www.capttgif.com | 210-846-5083 Like me on Facebook: Capt. Tony Gonzalez Inshore Fishing
With boating season really kicking in this month, this is the perfect time to service your boat motor to ensure a trouble-free season. Manufactures recommend servicing your boats motor each year or 100 hours of run time, whichever comes first. Service such as oil and gear lube change, fuel filter, water pump impellers, thermostats and other maintenance items specific to your motor are essential to the life of the motor. It also allows the tech to inspect the oil and gear lube for signs of water intrusion indicating a leaky seal or other potential problems. At Clear Lake Powerboat Service, Inc. a Premier Mercury Service Dealer, we take great strides to provide our customers with the best service possible. We also provide service for Volvo Penta, Mercruiser, Indmar and other gasoline marine motors. Preventative maintenance prevents problems from arising so they do not interrupt your boating season. ummertime redfish and flounder has been amazing this year. There are still some big trophy trout being talked but most of them have dumped their eggs and are slim. We have seen 30 inch trout anywhere from 5 1/2 pounds to 7 pounds. The amount of flounder that we are seeing is very exciting for a play systems. We are not just picking them up at one location but at least seven different locations were we are catching multiple flounder. Down south Lures and gamblers have been the most productive. People always ask me when I’m fishing for flounder what is my tactic. My answer is simple slow it down to where you’re at bumping your Lure on the bottom and not lifting more than 18 inches off the bottom. Flounder in general are very aggressive if you can present to be close enough to them they
will attack it. When setting a hook on a flounder you don’t want to sit directly up it’s best to side set as their mouths or sideways. One thing that absolutely kills me when I see people have big trout or flounder on the rod is highsticking a fish. If you set your hook with your rod to the left stay to the left. If the fish swims to the right just adjust your feet where your chest is facing the fish at all times. Redfish and trout are great in the badlands and penescal point. The packery channel has drum and nueces has a good trout and redfish. One thing I recommend as for gear is the hellrazor jigheads. Capt.Javi Castillo

his year, Galveston Bay Foundation (GBF) welcomed two new schools - Ball High in Galveston and St. Thomas Episcopal School in Houston - to “Get Hip to Habitat,” our school-year long wetland education and restoration program.
Ball High: Galveston, TX
GBF caught up with students at Ball High the week before they transplanted marsh grass into the Bay. After harvesting the marsh grass from a manmade pond at NRG’s Cedar Bayou EcoCenter in Baytown, the students cultivated the grass for months in kiddie pools at their school and performed tests to ensure the health of the grass. “It was really hard work at first,” said Christian Mays, a senior at Ball High who had spent the class period consolidating marsh grass and cleaning out the kiddie pools. “It seemed like a chore, but I found myself learning more and more every day. We’re actually able to help out these marshes with human power instead of waiting for nature to take its course,” he said.
Students from two schools new to Galveston Bay Foundation program get connected to their Bay
He said it feels awesome to do the project for Galveston, where he is from, and to help out the environment and wildlife. Ball High is a Title I school and received a scholarship to participate in the program, a resource teacher Zahrah Ektefaei was thankful for, as she said they would not be able to otherwise. It’s this kind of hands-on science experience that helps create adults who value and are concerned for the health of the Bay,” she said. She said because of their experience in the program, she has had students express interest in pursuing degrees in biology and environmental science, an outcome she did not think would be the same if they were just hearing about science instead of getting to participate in the process. “It’s especially helpful that we get to participate in a hands-on project,” echoed Carter Burlison, a senior in Ms. Ektefaei’s class. “If we keep up this marshland, it will provide provide food and shelter for habitat in the Bay.”
St. Thomas Episcopal School: Houston, TX
Erica Maw, teacher at St. Thomas Episcopal School, came to the Get Hip to Habitat program in a unique way. She was researching environmental organizations for students to fundraise for during Earth Day and ended up choosing to fundraise to name two dolphins through the Galveston Bay Dolphin Research and Conservation Program. After successfully fundraising, her students named the dolphins Dumbledolph and Shanti. Ms. Maw enrolled in the Get Hip to Habitat program for the following school year. “Over the year, the students have been bonding while developing a sense of responsibility and a greater understanding of our watershed and the significance of wetlands,” she said. Edmund Carroll, senior in Ms. Maw’s class, said the program helped give the class a sense of accomplishment, a chance to get outside and experience nature - which he says is becoming a rarity, and an understanding of the importance of the project beyond just planting grass. “For Houstonians, flooding and loss of wetlands is a very real and immediate problem,” he said. “It is imperative to be able to participate in this program in order to save our ecosystem, our livelihood and our culture, if not our lives.” For more information about GBF education programs, visit www. galvbay.org/education. Shaping EWG Swimbait Hooks for Weedless Presentations By: CAM Special Correspondent Tobin Strickland
I
t is summer and for those of us that fish the grass flats and shallow structure for redfish and big trout that means finding new ways to rig your baitsf. Through the development and testing of my new lure, one of the biggest parameters is shaping the hook for best results. My parameter for ‘Best Result’s asks a lot; I wanted the best hook set ratio that resulted in the least missed fish, least fouled hook sets, and also very weedless and snag less. I fish shallow grass with heavy amounts of floating grass for reds and big Hook Shaping trout; I fish reds cruising flooded marsh grass, and I also fish shallow oyster and rocks for reds and big trout. I had to test a lot of hooks and keepers to find what was the best. So far, I haven’t found a best hook, so much that I’ve found a best “Shape’ of hook. Shaping an Extra Wide Gap (EWG) Swimbait hook consist of bending the point section down slightly to be more in-line with the eye of the hook, or at least that is what is working best with my lure. This can be accomplished with any brand EWG from Trokar, Owner, Mustard, Gamakatsu, and Berkley, or others. RockPort Rattler already has a similar shape. Shape your hook for the best results. More next month on ‘Spring keeper’ vs ‘Pin Style’ keeper. Check out Tobin’s new Lure at TroutSupport.com It’s Part 4x4, B-1 Bomber, Army Ranger, and Part Seal Team. Fishing as HOT as the Weather
T
here are a couple certainties living on the Gulf coast during the summer: it is going to be HOT and humid and the fish are going to bite! There are quite a few things I enjoy about fishing during the summer minus the scorching heat. Primarily getting to fish the jetties, beach front and short rigs. Summer is basically the only time of the year in which I venture to fish the jetties, beach front or short rigs. Tactics vary slightly to approach fishing down south versus the north end of Sabine Lake. I still throw a lot of Tsunami swim shads and topwaters like Egret’s new Zombie Walker however I will also mix in a few baits that allow me to fish much deeper water. Johnson Splinter spoons in 1/4oz and 1/2 oz are a great way to get down deeper quicker at the short rigs and catch a mess of speckled trout without having to resort to live bait. I prefer the silver spoon for trout and the gold spoon for redfish. The shape of the Splinter spoon helps getting down quicker in strong currents. Definitely use a swivel to help prevent your line from twisting when fishing a spoon. I will also use Egret 3.5” Wedgetails along the jetties, beach front and short rigs. The colors Opening Night and Pink Flash are very hard to beat. If the water is sandy or dirty I will switch to a darker color like Black Chartreuse. Fishing the jetties and the beach I will typically use either
1/8oz or 1/4oz jigheads for the Wedgetails. When we move to the short rigs it may be necessary to use a heavier jighead such as 3/8oz depending on the depth of water the fish are in and the strength of the current. I particularly enjoy running the beach and short rigs due to the variety of game fish that we have the opportunity of catching. It is not uncommon to get onto Spanish mackerel, triple tail and ling. With that in mind it is a good idea to use quality equipment to help prevent having your heart broken over losing a quality fish. I opt for using FINS braided line, usually 30lb test with a 30lb monofilament leader. I rod with a little more backbone is recommended as well. Sarge Custom’s Ma Deuce is a heck of a good choice paired with a Lew’s LITE Speed Spool and you’re in business! As always, make sure and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and put on plenty of sunblock.

Snapper Season H
By
ello fellow Gulf Coast Fisherman. This is Captain Mikey Roberts with Blue Fin Charters out of Freeport, Texas. Snapper season this year has been a great success. The number of red snapper off the Texas Coast has exploded which has made for some great fishing trips. This is a good and bad thing at the same time. Reef areas have become so over ran with red snapper that it is harder to target other species inside sixty miles. Such as vermilion snapper, grouper, mangrove snapper and even some top water species like kingfish and cobia. King fishing has been consistently good fishing this year. Chumming the water is a great way to attract king fish, mangrove snapper, dorado and cobia. There have been several current changes with Sargassum collected in it to troll and target wahoo, dorado and cobia. Lots of anglers have got to experience the fun of catching the small chicken dolphin. As we come into July and August we shall start to see larger dorado in our waters. Texas shrimp season open July 15 and is one of my favorite times of the year! Behind the shrimp boats we are looking forward to targeting black fin tuna, cobia, dorado, wahoo and kingfish. This is a fast pace and exciting style of fishing which the outcome can be a great success! Fingers crossed for calm seas and tight lines. Stay safe out there and good luck everyone! GALVESTON BAY FISHING REPORT By: Capt.Craig Lambert
H
ot weather and hot fishing is what we can usually expect in August. The ship channel and the deeper areas of the open bay are where cooler waters attract bait and gamefish. Fishing open water slicks can lead to a variety of species including speckled trout, redfish, ladyfish, gafftop and Jack Crevalle. Every one of these fish are hardcore fighters and will stretch your tackle to the max. That is the great thing about saltwater. You just never know what you are going to catch. After you catch all of these species the next cast might produce a shark or a tripletail. August is a great month for a variety of species to have fun with. Typically by the end of the month the bull reds start showing up to begin their annual spawning run. The ship channel and the jetties will begin to stack up with oversized redfish and at times they are so thick you cant keep them off of your line. These big brutes are not the best of table fare so after having a blast reeling them in go ahead and release them carefully so they can lay their precious precious cargo of eggs. The deeper holes near the end of each jetty are always a great place to go. But you had better get there early because the weekends can get very crowded out there especially on the hot spots. There is nothing more exciting than hammering specks on the rigs and well pads spread out across our bay system. Hopping from well to well is a very productive and proven method for putting specks in the box. Artificials work best for covering all areas of the water column around a shell pad. Typically I like to start deeper in the mornings and follow the fish up as the sun rises. Come midday I prefer a lighter jighead or a topwater bait. Look for structures around the ship channel and on up in to the southern portions of Trinity Bay to hold fish consistently this month. The fish are starting their migration northward which means fall isn’t too far away. Trinity should really get active this month with plenty of fish pushing in to that bay system. Keep to the open water areas for specks and the shorelines for redfish and you will do all right this month. Be safe and remember to always take a kid fishing!!!

MATAGORDA OFFSHORE FISHING REPORT By: Capt Mark Holland

ello from Matagorda Offshore fishing in Matagorda is red hot right now. Red Snapper, Kingfish, Ling are all coming to the cleaning tables on a regular basis. Also, there has been some mahi mahi and wahoo showing up as well from some nice rips and color changes offshore. By the time this is published, the Gulf of Mexico Shrimping Season will have started and we should be catching more and more mahi mahi, wahoo and blackfin tuna in the coming days. Our boat has been bringing in some exceptional catches. Eric Yeager and his crew had a great trip on June 19th. Eric brought some friends and some kids for a day of offshore action. Red Snapper, Ling and Kingfish were all caught that day, we wore them boys out!
Doug Buckalew and his son wanted a day out offshore to celebrate his sons accomplishment of earning the Boy Scout Eagle Scout Award. Again Kingfish, Red Snapper and Ling were brought to the tables that day as well. Steven Weinheimer and his family booked a day of offshore fishing as well. The conditions were perfect, but man was it hot. Steven and his family caught a smorgasbord of offshore fish that included Red Snapper, Kingfish, Ling, mahi mahi and Spanish mackerel. The highlight of the day was the almost new state record Red Snapper catch. Nick Weinheimer hooked up with what he thought was a grouper on the bottom but we were amazed when we started seeing red when the fish was making its way to the surface. When the fish surfaced, we clearly seen it was a huge red snapper. When we arrived at the dock we figured out how big it really was. A whopping 39lbs 1 oz red snapper that measured 40 ¼ inches long. The current Texas State Record is 38.75lbs and was 40 inches long. The angler had received help in holding the rod by another angler therefore it’s not a state record qualifying catch. Nonetheless, a very proud accomplishment by the young angler indeed……. We still have some open dates in September, so get your friends and family together and let’s go catch some fish…… Captain Mark Holland | Matagorda Sportfishing and Offshore Tackle www.matagordasportfishing.com

Flounder Tips & Tactics Snapper Season I H hope that everybody is having a wonderful month, although it has been pretty windy. The temperatures have been getting over one hundred on the index almost everyday. One of the things that I am learning very well about Flounder lately is that they really are not the easiest fish to get to bite. Even while out gigging, if you do not know what to look for then you will get discouraged pretty quickly. The first thing I would do is get google earth and look at all of the different shorelines to see whether or not they are sand, grass or mud. Now do not forget that these pictures that we get are sometimes taken a year ago and if it is sand, it could have grass growing on it by this point. So if you can make it out to these areas during the day and scout what it will be like it definitely makes finding spots a bit simpler. I really have been looking for little spoil islands and will make my way around them either by foot or boat. The fish haven’t really made it all the way to shallow area that they were in last year but if you will find a good shoreline and walk it should be productive. I really like to do most of my gigging on an incoming tide. They really like to dart for the shallowest water they can find in order to get that easy meal when the tide switches. I can sit here all day long and try to explain the best way to fish for flounder but I think it will be easier to show you so I started a you tube channel. If you look up Flounder Professor Outdoors it will come up or my name and I am in the middle of finishing a bunch of how to videos for everybody. A couple of the flounder I caught that nice day! Just subscribe to my channel and each time a new video comes up it will send it to you. I went gigging night before last for a couple of hours but only found a few fish which tells me that anywhere I look for flounder needs to be somewhat near a deep escape route. The ones we did find where probably in about a foot of water over hard sand with occasional grass splotches. They had also been there for a while because their backs where covered in sand with the same pattern as the bottom. Before I finish up this months article I want to tell you that the new chicken boy hot pink color is just slaying the fish. Trout, reds and flounder. Thank you guys for all of your support and without you all I wouldn’t be doing this. Remember for a more hands on approach which is easier for some to learn just check out my you tube for help. Until next time, tight lines and sharp gigs. Do not forget that if you have any questions just email me or join my group Flounder Fanatics on Facebook. Thank you to all of my sponsors for your support: chicken boy lures, fin addict angler, thump kings, Salt Thugs Apparel Co, Hookspit Rods, Redtail Republic, Kelley Wigglers, M&R Tackle, hell razor jig heads and stinky pants fishing. ello fellow Gulf Coast Fisherman. MONSTA NEWS! By: Michael “Sharky” Marquez
MAKIN’ MEMORIES THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME!
RECIPE OF THE MONTH This recipe will work on an assortment of meater fish including king fish and shark for instance. If you are using shark for your meal, like before you will need to let the shark sit in buttermilk for a few hours before preparing the meal. Now let’s get started!
YOU WILL NEED
Here we have some real MONSTAS! It’s been a great month with the warmer waters and larger toothy sharks coming into the shallow waters! We are still seeing plenty of Trouts and small redfish, Jettie Snapper are still biting and we’ve even pulled in some Stingrays! Lookin good out there Guys! Remember everyone, these summer months are some of the best months to fish with a very wide variety of catches to be had. Many of the same fish will be here for the following months as well! July will have more and larger sharks and rays coming in with the warm water, so book soon to catch a MONSTA! Speaking of, we have our deals you should keep an eye on!!
• Your fish- for this we will use shark • Mustard- we used spicy mustard for more flavor
• Bread crumbs • A deep frier, or hot skillet with oil
So you have your shark that has been sitting in buttermilk for some time right? Good! Take the shark out and wash off the buttermilk and cube down to about an inch making almost bite size pieces. Get some of the mustard into a bowl, and dip the individual pieces into the mustard making sure to cover the whole piece. If you are not a fan of mustard don’t worry, this is to add only a little flavor to the meat and is accented nicely with other seasonings.
After the little bites are covered in mustard, cover now with the bread crumbs and throw them into the frier! If your oil is hot enough then it will not take long at all before the outer edges are nice and brown having cooked the interior of the bite to perfection!
Cooking a lot may take time but it is worth it! They go great with fried or with a salad of your choice!!

PRO REDFISH SERIES
I
n 2012 the forces of Rudy’s BBQ teamed up with Captain Geoff Austin to start up the Rudy’s Redfish Series. Shortly after the first season it was decided to grow the series into the Rudy’s Pro Series and the 1-Day Series. Geoff has been a successful fishing guide for the last 16 years and has fished and won a several Pro Redfish events. So his vision is through an Anglers eyes. During an event in Houston Geoff met Wade Bullard owner if Hook Spit Fishing Gear and Performance Rods! Wade being the very successful entrepreneur that he is saw the opportunity to grow the series. He began by sponsoring the series with rods, apparel and graphics. As Geoff and Wades relationship grew so did their Tournaments and Events and the two of them decided to join forces at the end of 2014. The obvious next step was to combine both of their Tournaments and Events, thus GCTA was born which stands for Gulf Coast Tournament Association. Rudy’s Pro Sereis, Redfish Rivalry and Hook Spit Junior Anglers Association are all developed and produced by the Gulf Coast Tournament Association.
About The Series:
Since 2016 the Rudy’s Pro Series has been televised on Pursuit TV and produced by MOE Productions. The series is called “On the Trail with Rudy’s Redfish Series” with each show airing 3-5 weeks after the event is over. The Rudy’s Pro Series is a 100% entry payout tournament. The Rudy’s Pro Series three day events start out on a Thursday night with the Rudy’s Texas BBQ Captains Dinner and the drawing of boat flight numbers for the boat release the next morning. The Captains meeting includes any news, safety, weather forecast and any other issues with regards to the next two days of fishing. Friday morning, the GCTA Staff give each boat a safety check as they slide their boats in the water. Shortly there after we take a moment for the National Anthem and our morning prayer. At that time the teams are told to start their engines and get ready for the controlled by numbers drawn takeoff. After the two-man teams are released, the GCTA Staff sets up for the 2:00 - 4:00 pm weigh in as well as dinner for the Anglers. After the weigh in and the Anglers eat we let them know where they stand after the first day of fishing. Saturday we do the same thing in the morning but boats are all released in reverse order. While the Anglers are out fishing the GCTA Staff get ready for weigh in and to give away the big money at the awards ceremony. Tune In and watch all the Pro Teams see who is the best of the best from coast to coast. Tight Lines and Sharp Hooks and see you on the Trail with Rudy’s Pro Series. Is There Hope on the Horizon?
T
he Trump administration is listening to American fishermen - a vast departure from the previous administration’s continuous actions to take recreational fishermen off the water. The Gulf Council manages the Gulf of Mexico’s Red Snapper fisheries. This year the Council legislated for recreational anglers to have only 3 days to fish with their own boats in federal waters. (However, federally licensed for-hire charter boats were granted the rights to sell an additional 46 days of access to…anyone who can afford to pay.) Recreational fishermen denounced this decision, and rallied all across the Gulf through several organizations and over social media. The 3-day fishing “season” came and went. The combined voice of angry fishermen was heard, and the U.S. Commerce Department stepped in. Their subsidiary, the National Marine Fisheries Service, through its corrupted Gulf Council, clearly failed to manage our fisheries in an equitable manner as mandated by fisheries laws. As a short-term solution, the Commerce Department proposed options to Gulf State fisheries managers, with a strict time limit to come to agreement on the best option. The States agreed, and the Commerce Department overturned the Gulf Council! They reopened red snapper fishing to recreational anglers in the Gulf ’s federal waters for 39 additional days! The significance of the Commerce Department over-riding their subsidiary and dealing directly with the 5 Gulf states cannot be overstated. It acknowledges our federal fisheries management is not working for the American recreational fishermen and this administration is not casting a blind eye. It also demonstrates the 5 Gulf states can work cooperatively on arrangements beneficial to all states. This action brings cautious optimism to recreational fishermen who have seen the access to red snapper in federal waters vanish under the last administration. During this time, recreational fishing was reduced from 194 days, with a 4-red snapper daily limit, to 11 days, with a 2-fish daily limit, last year - a 97% DECREASE. During this same time, the for-profit commercial fishermen’s access more than tripled from 120 to 365 days. It’s painfully obvious to any reasonable person that this “management” is strongly biased toward for-profit interests at the DIRECT EXPENSE of recreational fishermen. This needs to change. Reinforcing our optimism, the new Secretary of Commerce announced in June the appointments of 3 members to the Gulf Council who bring balanced backgrounds to fisheries management. This is a significant shift toward more rational fisheries management based on biological principles and away from for-profit interests and monetary greed. But the Commerce Department can only go so far. The MagnusonStevens Act (MSA) governs our federal fisheries laws. A few positive moves helped us this summer, but for long-term meaningful improvements, changes MUST be made to the Act. Why? Most of the problems today are a DIRECT RESULT of changes made to the Act -over ten years ago. Those changes triggered the corrupted system which ultimately 16 GALVESTON & UPPER COAST
CAM_GALV_0817.indd 16
AUGUST 2017
gave “ownership” rights to 51% of the Public’s red snapper via “Catch Shares” to a few well-connected private fishing entities - a small group of commercial fishermen exempt from paying royalties to the nation despite profiting from the harvest of our public resource! These “catch shares” – valued at about 250 MILLION dollars today-- are Public Trust Resources taken from the many (ALL Americans) and given to a few for their exclusive profits. Theodore Roosevelt must be turning over in his grave; his vision to preserve our Public Trust Resources “for the enjoyment and benefit of the People” (the many) has been under full frontal attack by greed to privatize our Public Resources through the catch shares of a few. We have an opportunity to right these wrongs this year by proposing changes through the overdue reauthorization of MSA. It’s time to rectify the problem. The most influential person over changing the legislation is your Congressman. He needs to know changing the Magnuson-Stevens Act issue is important to you. Why else don’t we think the current MSA works? Red snapper populations require a certain ecosystem to thrive. There are many, many different ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico. Some areas attract plentiful red snapper; some do not. There are multiple reasons, for example, depth of water or availability of reef structure. (Snapper prefer deep water and live their entire lives within a relatively small reef structured area.) At the same time, in the world of the current fisheries decision makers, the entire Gulf of Mexico red snapper biomass is managed as a single ecosystem. They assume there are the same amount of fish distributed equally in the entire Gulf. However, in the real world there are many unique ecosystems from Key West, FL to Brownsville, TX. So, the “one size fits all’ policy makes no scientific or ecological sense. Texas fishermen and fisheries are being managed based on the needs of Florida fisheries, and vice versa. It’s like managing Texas deer herds/seasons based on what Florida deer populations/hunters are doing. It’s ludicrous. Make sure your Congressman is on your side. Long term improvements require changes to the Magnuson Stevens Act. The changes need to ensure that our public resources are available to the public. Rockin’ Bass In The Adirondacks By Rich Ortiz
Rich Ortiz, the “Fishin’ Musician,” shows off a nice Adirondacks largemouth. Check out Rich’s music and outdoor adventures at richortiz.com. Photo by Louis Torres Photography.
B
y the time I was 12 years old, I knew and fished at least two dozen bass waters, most of them from a canoe with my Pop. Usually there were no boat ramps, no houses and seldom another fisherman. That’s the beauty of the Adirondack region of Upstate New York. There’s tons of water and lots of fish. Often when the Adirondacks (ADKs) are mentioned in fishing circles, pristine secluded trout rivers or brook trout ponds come to mind. Our secret is that the ADKs have countless bass fishing options, as well, with any kind of water you could think of. Three renowned waters within my 30-minute fishing radius are perfect examples of the great bass fishing in our area. Lake George, Lake Champlain and Saratoga Lake provide varied and endless opportunities for both largemouth and smallmouth action, with a spectrum of habitats that could keep any bass enthusiast occupied for a lifetime. Additionally, if it’s a secluded canoe/kayak adventure you’re after, I dare say the ADKs have more backwoods bass waters on public land than any state I can think of. These woods are the same natural forests they were in 1885, when they were deemed untouchable thanks to Teddy Roosevelt. Imagine fishing secluded, crystal-clear waters with green mountains as a backdrop, moderate temperatures and a relaxing breeze. Since the founding of our country, these waters have provided sanctuary from the heat and congestion of the growing East Coast industrial cities. Summer retreats to the ADKs to fish and hunt were the norm, and coupling
these outdoor activities with attractions like Saratoga horse racing or a Lake George steamboat ride created traditions of the American summer vacation. Today, if you are serious about bass fishing, yet want to include family on the vacation, the Saratoga/Lake George area is the spot. I feel qualified to endorse the attractions, since when I am not fishing or hunting, I’m performing music at many of the area’s top resorts and restaurants. Though my profession as a traveling musician has allowed me to fish all over North America, my heart is still at home fishing the 6-million-acre Adirondack Park. Let’s start with Lake George, which is a large deep-water lake that is the ultimate finesse bass water. This beautiful 32-mile-long glacially carved lake has rock shorelines and is speckled with islands that provide endless bass structure. Lake George has AAA reservoir water quality and is crystal clear. Light 6- to 8-pound fluorocarbon line is a must while drop-shotting 30- to 50-foot rocky bottoms for big numbers of smallmouth and some nice 4-pound-plus fish. When drop-shotting I prefer natural presentation baits like the Berkley’s Gulp! Nemesis in the Smelt color. The lake temperature remains cool all year, and shaky-head worm presentations or small bass jigs will score a mix of largemouth and smallmouth in ultra-clear 20- to 40-foot depths. This is a great training ground for teaching your family or friends to fish. Shore fishing is a bonus, and many others and I make trophy catches all year from shore. I rely on my Costa sunglasses on this lake as much as my Lowrance Sonar. It’s so clear that I can watch strikes in 20 feet of water. I keep three pairs of Costas on board. I prefer yellow lenses for sunrise, low light and cloudy days. These lenses work wonders sighting fish and contrasting bottom structure. I use blue mirror on bright days and amber green mirror lenses for most other situations on the lake. Just to the north of Lake George, Lake Champlain offers everything a fisherman can imagine. Many experts rank Champlain among the top fisheries in the country for largemouth and smallmouth bass. You can fish just about any presentation in this vast lake, which combines natural and man-made structure like sunken ships, submerged train tracks and dock cribbings. My fishing concentrates on the southern end of the lake, where the water is usually very stained. Vast water chestnut beds yield many 5-pound-plus largemouth bass. Heavy abrasion-resistant line is a must; I prefer fluorocarbon or braid, depending on presentation. I normally punch the weeds with 1- or 2-ounce tungsten and big 10-inch Power Bait or Yum worms. Dark colors work best. Topwater and flipping are also go-to tactics, with countless backwaters providing breathtaking views and heart-pounding hook sets. To the south, Saratoga Lake is much smaller than George or Champlain. It is slightly stained and can be highly pressured but still provides large numbers of largemouth in the 3- to 5-pound range. Dense concentrations of cabbage and mixed milfoil create great opportunities for tossing plastics and jigs on the edges of long weed lines. Saratoga Lake’s close proximity to the City of Saratoga Springs makes it an ideal morning or evening getaway for those visiting during track season, which lasts through Labor Day. While the tourist season winds down, the fish really turn on, which make for some magical days in fall. The big lakes are great, but to me the gems of this area are the smaller lakes and ponds I learned to fish on. The unique chance to toss a lure to unpressured fish on public waters is a reality. The Adirondack Park features countless opportunities perfect for canoe and kayak fishing. With today’s lightweight watercraft, you can be alone with 2- to 5-pound bass after just a half-mile hike to numerous ponds and lakes. Many canoe and kayak waters are also roadside or within a state park. New York does a wonderful job providing trailhead access and parking areas for anglers with car-top boats. Research access at www.dec.ny.gov. The amount of good bass water in the Saratoga/Lake George is staggering. With its proximity to so many metropolitan centers, a short drive up I-87 can have you setting hooks on some beastly bass in no time.

innesota’s Mille Lacs Lake has long been known for exceptional walleye fishing and ice fishing, but the smallmouth bass fishing on this more than 130,000-acre lake north of Minneapolis is what catapulted it to the top of Bassmaster Magazine’s 100 Best Bass Lakes rankings. According to B.A.S.S. research, 20-pound five-fish limits of smallmouth bass are a regular occurrence, 30-pound sacks show up in some events, and two 36-pound limits were weighed in during events last fall. Those numbers are almost unbelievable on a smallmouth lake, considering a 36-pound limit would average out to more than 7 pounds per bass. Here’s the rundown of Bassmaster’s top-12 bass lakes in the nation: 1. Mille Lacs Lake, Minnesota 2. Sam Rayburn Reservoir, Texas 3. Clear Lake, California 4. Shearon Harris Lake, North Carolina 5. Focus On Redfish In August By Tobin Strickland
A
big question on all the Internet message boards lately is, “Where are the midrange trout in the heat of summer?” One of the indicators of either fishing too shallow or fishing in the wrong part of the bay for the season is catching mostly undersized trout. So, if you’re catching nothing but “dink” trout in August, fish deep structure with current. I don’t like catching dinks, so I’ll focus on upper-slot redfish and sight casting to the big shallow trout I see while I’m fishing for reds. The summer heat finally forces redfish to go in search of food in the marsh and grass flats. Shrimp are now mostly gone, except large white shrimp, so while there are main-bay, open-water redfish chasing those fish-big shrimp, some reds will now begin to work over juvenile white shrimp and shad in the marsh and grass flats. They’ll also be eating mullet and crabs when the opportunity presents itself. Redfish are simple. They use current to feed, and the faster you learn about where the niche is, the more consistent you’ll be catching redfish in shallow waters. Follow a current from a marsh cut to the bank of a marsh pond it’s flowing too, and you’ll find redfish. Also look for eddies behind structure and where the current edge crosses structure, and that’s good as well. Big trout are similar in the summer in shallow areas. They are there for the big mullet and to eat little trout but are in small niche areas of their own. Tobin created the TroutSupport.com weedless, snagless, long casting, walk the dog soft plastic for fishing shallow grass, shallow oysters, rocks, and mangrove where reds and snook live. MAKO SHARK ON THE FLY
I
f you’re looking for some spectacular fly fishing for toothy critters, mako sharks are tough to beat as a game fish. They can be found pretty much worldwide, but right now is the time of year to visit southern California, where shortfin mako sharks show up off the coast every year within easy range for fly rodders with a small skiff. The mako shark is one of saltwater fly fishing’s outstanding but unappreciated game fish. Found on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, a smaller mako in the 20- to 30-pound range can be the perfect-sized fish for the beginning saltwater fly fisherman. Of course, fishing for sharks is a tad different than fishing for bluegills in your Uncle Ned’s farm pond, and the equipment also differs. First, you’ll need a boat, preferably a boat over 18-feet that can handle fairly choppy seas. Most center-consoles will do; however, a skiff with a beam of 8 feet or wider and a not-too-deep V will settle in the water better and will reduce pitch and roll to a minimum, offering a much more stable casting platform. A good chum line is the most effective way of attracting makos to within casting distance of your boat. Chumming attracts the larger makos and will place you in the position of being able to sight-cast to them. Into a chum bag, place the belly sections or fresh carcasses of tuna, bluefish or bonito, then place the bag into a milk crate or 5-gallon bucket and lower this mess over the side. Then sit back and listen for the musical score from the movie “Jaws” to begin. You won’t have long to wait once that chum slick begins to spread. Ideally, you should use fresh carcasses, but store-bought chum will suffice. One bit of important advice: Less is more when chumming; you don’t need much; no matter how small the slick, a shark can smell it from
miles away. Now that you have the boat and chum, the next thing to do is find a mako. On the West Coast, we are fortunate to have the continental shelf only a few miles offshore. On the east coast, you’ll have to venture a bit farther offshore. Keep your eyes peeled for working birds and surface-busting bait; constantly check the water temperature looking for readings between 66 and 70 degrees. But, be patient when chumming. I will wait at least an hour or an hour and a half before moving to another spot, but there have been occasions when the sharks made their appearance within a few minutes of 1 ½ hours. Once in the slick, makos will stick around for most of the fishing day. Drifting allows you to cover more water and in the process, attract more makos to your boat. By choosing the right season, having the right chum and chumming the right areas, you can count on hooking and releasing a good number of makos during the course of a single day on the water.

t Fowler’s, we know sunglasses. We sold more than 25,000 pairs last year, and we represent more than 30 companies, all clamoring for attention in the marketplace. This gives me intimate knowledge of most of what’s offered, and I have some insight to share on what makes a pair of sunglasses the right pair for you. There are two types of

Realize that frames represent very little in the cost of production for a pair of sunglasses. What you are paying for--or should be paying for-in an expensive pair of glasses is lens technology. A better set of lenses is going to cost more and last longer. Those inexpensive glasses with sprayon lens protection will serve you almost as well as the expensive ones off the shelf, but they might

sunglasses shoppers. One views sunglasses as fashion accessories, to be matched to an outfit or activity. This is all well and good. Good-looking glasses do help you look cool. The second type of shopper, which is a group I have found many anglers fall into, is more interested in sunglasses as an essential tool. All-day comfort and performance are considerations that come before style or brand for people in this second group. If performance is more important to you than ego, do not lock yourself into one particular brand of glasses. They can range from $5 to $500, and all manufacturers promote their own bells and whistles. Sometimes you get what you pay for, other times you are paying for a brand logo on the side of the frame.
only maintain that performance for a year. The single most important consideration with frames is they are essential to fit and the resulting comfort for the wearer. This is why you should not be locked into a certain brand. Everyone’s face is different, and so are everyone’s sunglasses needs. Do not be a branded person, choose a pair of sunglasses that fits your face and your needs.

1,000-Pound Tournament Hammerhead Shatters Texas Record Photo courtesy of Texas City La Marque Jaycees/Facebook nglers hauled some big sharks out of the Gulf of Mexico during this year’s Texas City Jaycees Tackle Time Fishing Tournament. Chief among those sharks was a 1,033-pound great hammerhead that shattered a 37-year-old Texas state record. Tim McClellan obviously took first place for the giant shark he entered in the annual fundraising tournament for the Texas City La Marque Jaycees. The tournament awards the top three fish in multiple inshore, offshore and youth divisions. This year, it ran June 30 – July 9, and 964-pound and 817-pound tiger sharks rounded out the top three in the shark division. McClellan’s fish beat out the 871-pound Texas state record great hammerhead, which was caught by Mark Johnson in July of 1980. The current IGFA world record great hammerhead weighed 1,280 pounds. It was caught from the other side of the Gulf by Bucky Dennis fishing out of Boca Grande, Fla. in May 2006. Texas City is on Galveston Bay, just southeast of Houston, and offers easy access to the open Gulf of Mexico through the pass between Galveston and Goat islands.
