hile mystic grouper can be caught year-round in the Bahamas, the winter months are our favorite time of year. Whenever a weather window presents itself, we point our bow east across the Florida Straights in search of these deep-water bottom dwellers. Mystics are one of the lesser-known grouper species, simply because anglers don’t fish deep enough to target them. Like all grouper, they are excellent to eat and usually weigh from 15 to 50 pounds, although they can grow much larger. It takes special gear to fish the 800- to 1,200-foot depths where we find mystics. Armed with Shimano Tiagra 80 WAs and Shimano Tiagra 50 WAs equipped with Hooker Electric Autostop drives, we string up 65- to 100-pound Power Pro braid on Crafty One Custom’s Deep Drop Rods. We begin by paying close attention to our Humminbird Solix sonar with CHIRP HD digital technology to locate bottom structure. We look for cones, holes, drop-offs, ledges and deep-water ridges. Once viable structure is located, we position the boat above it with engines out of gear to judge how wind and current will manipulate our drift. Then the
boat is repositioned up-current from the structure and the deep-drop rigs are readied. When targeting mystics, we use our www.ThreeBuoysFishing.com grouper deep-drop rigs made with three 8/0 VMC 3x Circle Hooks on 100-pound branch lines off of 12 feet of 150-pound main line. For bait, we prefer fresh-cut 8-inch strips of dolphin, tuna, wahoo or barracuda. Many deep-drop anglers claim, “no light, no bite,” but our experience has proven that, especially with mystics, we catch more and bigger fish without lights. We deploy two rods on opposite sides of the boat. Lead weights in the 10-pound range are the rule of thumb, but weight can be adjusted to the current. After the weights hit bottom, the reels are left in freespool to lay the rigs straight down on the bottom. The engines should be used to decrease the boat’s drift to a standstill, if possible. If the boat drifts, let out line to keep the rigs on bottom. When the rod tip bumps and shakes, resist the urge to lock up the drag and retrieve line. Wait a minute or two for additional fish to sense the commotion. They’ll often eat the remaining baits. When it’s time to strike, lift the reel’s drag to strike (pre-set to 20 pounds of drag) and slowly start your retrieve. Big mystic grouper put up quite a fight at first, and you might even think you’ve hung bottom. Be patient and slowly gain as must line as possible. When fish are about halfway up, their air bladders expand and create lift. They will begin to float your rig up to the surface. For more tips and tactics on deep-dropping and the tackle and rigs to get tight, see www.threebuoysfishing.com. Finding bait becomes more important than at any other time of year. Goebel likes to get out well before dawn in search of shad or herring flickering near the surface, especially when a big moon keeps baitfish active all night. Diving birds are also a dead giveaway. They are likely feeding on baitfish pushed by stripers from below. “A lot of times if there’s bait there, I won’t even worry about marking fish on the graph,” Goebel said. “I’ll just put out my lines and start fishing where the bait is.”

here aren’t many anglers willing to endure the frigid early morning temperatures of winter on a large reservoir. But for those who can handle a little discomfort, right now is the best time of year to hook up with the striper of a lifetime. Around the Southeast, in reservoirs where striped bass were introduced, falling water temperatures spur changes in behavior that make the largest fish in the lake susceptible to anglers. Those 30- to 50-pounders are feeding up right now. They’re storing up reserves that will take them through the spring spawn. “It’s trophy striper season,” said Shane Goebel, of Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service. “The bigger fish are participating a little better. This time of year, we start going after those big ol’ hogs that are chasing the big baits.” The large summer schools broke up months ago. Stripers are spread out and on the move, following baitfish into the creek mouths and up into the backs of the creeks. Big fish move shallow when water temps hit the mid to low 50s on the lakes Goebel guides in the mountains of north Georgia and western North Carolina. It might take some searching to find them, but the rewards can be huge.
Because the stripers are continually moving with the bait, covering water is crucial. Goebel said to troll as many baits in as wide a spread as you can handle. Herring are great on lakes where they are present, but this time of year you should also work some big gizzard shad or trout into the spread. Sometimes it takes a big mouthful to convince big fish to eat. Goebel runs baits 30 to 40 feet behind planer boards. He’ll drop freelines 100 to 150 feet behind the boat. If the area where he finds bait isn’t too shallow, he’ll put a little bit of weight ahead of the baits on the inside boards to cover more water vertically. He slow trolls at about half a mile per hour. This is a pattern Goebel fishes all the way into May, when stripers have moved into a pre-spawn phase. It might not produce the numbers of fish that downlining into summer mega-schools will, but the fish are generally a lot bigger than those 5- to 10-pound summer schoolies. If catching an enormous striper sounds like fun, zip up your parka and get out on the lake. It’s trophy striper season. Check out Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service at bigolfish.com.

f Costa Rica isn’t already on your bucket list, it should be. Famous for both inshore and offshore fishing, it’s also a country with incredible biodiversity and exciting eco-tourism opportunities. In short, there’s something for every sportsman and adventure seeker here. From a fishing perspective, the west coast of this Central American country is most favored with several significant cities and ports including Jaco, Quepos and, of course, Golfito. It’s Los Suenos, however, where
my wife, Felicia and I found outstanding action on a trip last April. We worked the inshore grounds, catching huge roosterfish, rainbow runners, grouper, jacks and even mahi. We also decked a big cubera snapper. Of course, we did have an edge. Coastal Angler’s very own Costa Rica inshore reporter Capt. Carlos Arguedas and his first-mate son, Christopher, were our charter crew. “This really is a terrific place to fish,” said Arguedas, “We have access to a lot of different spots ranging from very close to the marina to 50 miles away. The roosterfish action is unbelievable here but we also catch big cubera snapper, amberjack, groupers and huge red snappers, too.” Arguedas loves to take clients for roosterfish because they fight so hard, are found close to port, and grow big. He’s had a 90-pounder grace his deck. For these, he’ll slow troll live baits like blue runners, herring, sardines or bonita. All of these baits, impaled on size 8 circle hooks, also attract other large predators; so you never know what to expect when the rod doubles over. “Roosterfish are very impressive when you first see them,” said Arguedas. “They are exotic-looking with big dorsal rays, a huge mouth and striped flanks. They are stunning to see for the first time. They are also exceptionally strong. Fight a 20-pounder and you’ll think you have a 40-pounder at the end of the line. They jump, too, and shake their head, so remember to lower your rod tip when that fish comes up or you’ll tear the hook free.” Among the other big fish that hit the deck for Arguedas’ crew on a regular basis are goliath grouper that can top 400 pounds. These are targeted around local reefs. If you want to run offshore, sailfish, tuna and marlin abound within 10 miles of port. Dorado, sometimes topping 30 pounds, can be tempted within sight of the coast. Costa Rica’s tropical climate makes it a year-round destination. Most travelers prefer to visit during the dry season, which runs from December through April, but you’ll find lighter crowds and lower travel prices during the “green” or rainy season from May to November. Whenever you visit, it really helps to work with a travel pro that deals frequently with Costa Rica to customize a trip here. Blue Water Sportfishing Charters (http://bluewatersportfishingcharters.com) specializes in setting up trips to Los Suenos. They can put you in the right place at the right time for the fish you want to catch, sights you want to see or adventures you want to experience. They’ll also book you with Capt. Carlos—or you can contact him yourself at www.wingmancr.com.

he first time I saw someone spearfishing, I was intrigued and wondered out loud how hard it would be to load a speargun. A friend heard me and said, “I’m sure you can do it. It’s probably more about technique than brute strength.” He was right. It’s not uncommon to struggle to load your first speargun, and you might suspect they made the bands too short. If you give it some time and use the right technique, it will become easy. First, some safety tips: 1) Never load a speargun out of the water. 2) Keep the safety on until you intend to shoot a fish. 3) Even with the safety on, treat it like a loaded weapon, never let the tip point at anyone. 4) Use tip protectors when not in use, so you don’t scratch anything. Some spearguns are loaded by resting the butt of the gun on your hip and pulling the bands toward the shaft notches. Others are loaded by resting the butt high on the middle of the chest and pulling the bands toward your sternum. Hip-loading spearguns are commonly used by scuba divers, as chest loading can be difficult when wearing a buoyancy compensator vest. Freedivers are less constricted by gear, so they normally use chest-loading spearguns. These have longer range because the shaft tabs sit closer to the butt of the gun. Now, some loading tips: 1) Wear gloves and wetsuit to prevent slips, scrapes or bruising. Some wetsuits have a loading pad built into the chest. 2) Don’t look down and hunch over when loading the bands. Push forward with your chest and pull the band swiftly with your arms, so the shaft tabs are pushed forward to meet the incoming
band. 3) Use a loading tab (if using a wood gun). This simple device makes things much easier by allowing you to first hip load the band to the loading tab and then raise the butt to your chest for the final pull. Although it’s a two-step process, it can be done quickly and will feel much easier. 4) If your bands are still too hard to load, use three longer bands. 5) Work out, lift weights, work on core and upper body. Try bench presses, seated rows, bent over rows, pushups and pull-ups. Bands and dumbbells can be incorporated into your workout routine, whether at the gym or home. If you want to see a band loading video, check out Coastal Angler online. And remember—you can accomplish anything you set your mind to! very blade-handy angler has their own techniques and tricks for peeling the perfect fillet off a fish. But anyone who has spent enough time around a cutting board knows the perfect way to fillet is a combination of three crucial elements: technique, tools and practice. Whether it’s a 15-pound red snapper or a 6-ounce bream, the basics of filleting a fish are the same. The idea is to remove the meat along the fish’s flanks, while leaving behind the head, bones and guts. Step 1: Make a vertical cut just behind the fish’s gill plate and pectoral fin. This cut should go all the way down to the bone and
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 2
extend from back to belly. Step 2: Run the blade from the first cut all the way down the top of the fish, along the backbone to the tail, making a shallow incision as close to the backbone as you can get it. Step 3: Using that long cut along the backbone, utilize smooth, light strokes to work the fillet away from the bones moving from the back to the belly. The other hand can be used to peel back the meat as you go. Cut around the ribcage when you arrive at it. Step 4: With step 3 completed, you should have a beautiful skinon fillet. To remove the skin, place the fillet on the board skin side down. Start from the tail and insert the knife through the meat down to the skin, leaving a tab of meat and skin at the tail to hold onto. Turn the knife horizontal and run the blade up the skin to remove the meat. Step 5: Use tweezers to pick out any pin bones left in the fillet. The technique seems simple enough, but if you don’t have good, sharp, flexible knives that are sized correctly for the fish on the board, you’re going to make a mess out of your fillets. Havalon has come up with an all-in-one solution for this issue with its Talon system. With five styles of high-quality blades that all fit on the same handle, switching from a 7-inch blade down to a 5-incher or even down to a 3.5-inch utility blade is as easy as pressing a button with their Quik-Change II blade replacement system. The blades can be resharpened as well as replaced to make sure they are razor sharp when you need them. Also, with a handle that opens up, clean-up is both thorough and easy with the Havalon Talon system. Rinse your tools down and roll them up in the included canvas kit so they’ll be ready the next time you need them. And next time should be soon, because practice is the final and most important element in the perfect way to fillet. Go fishing enough, and you’ll be peeling off perfect fillets for the table in no time. Check out the Havalon Talon System at www.havalon.com.

Happy New Year from the Masiero Family! the fishing has rebounded, so will our lives get back to normal. Let’s not forget how everyone helped each other and take that positive attitude into 2019! It always seems that the year after a Natural Disaster is one of the best years for all. I for one am looking forward to the New Year, setting and reaching new goals, meeting new people and catching big fish! Just want to thank everyone who supported the Magazine this past year! So here are some of the highlights of 2018! Happy New Year!

t’s 2019! How time flies when you’re having fun!
I’m sitting here two weeks before Christmas thinking about the last year. It started out great right up to the back to back hurricanes and the floods that followed. I think everyone was affected in some way, some more than others including a lot of businesses. But here’s the thing that impressed me the most, the resilience of the people in the area! The way the communities came together and helped each other was amazing. It’s hard for people that do not live here to understand and see the long-term effects on all our lives the storms caused. It’s also hard for them to see how well everyone handled it. The saying goes “It’s not what happens to you it’s how you handle it and that’s exactly what all of you did. I for one am proud to be part of this great community and having by Grandkids grow up here! So Mother Nature hit us good, but just like

o, I received an email that I will share with you from a reader and then I will get to my article… “Ed Andersen (VA) was fishing with his Uncle Al Mueller (PA) age 89 last week in the surf at Huntington Beach State Park where we were camping in the newly remade South campground. Ed caught and released this drum of 44” on 12# test line. Remarkably, Ed’s drum was caught in the exact same exact stretch of beach that Uncle Al caught a similar size drum over 25 years ago! What a coincidence that they both caught the fish of a lifetime (for us) in the same spot. When Al gets home next week, he’s going to dig up a photo of his fish. Uncle Al has been here for a month and at age 89 every day down to the beach cast netting bait and fishing all day. Photo attached of his 24” speckled trout which he even released to live another day. Not like our meat hunter Uncle Al to let his dinner swim away. Other than that, lots of blues 20” and under with a few kingfish thrown in. All in all, great surf fishing here in Murrells Inlet.” You can see “Uncle” Al now 90 with his catch and Ed in thismonth’s Brag Board. This email reminded me of when I would Surf fish in Jersey for Stripers and Blues with my Dad and Grandfather. Up north most of us learned to fish from the surf. If you headed to lot A21 of Long Beach Island, it would be loaded shoulder to shoulder with surf fishermen. Now down here you don’t see that a lot. We have surf fishermen but not like the Northeast. When the bull reds show up you will see some show up. I’m not sure why this is because we have a great fishery off the surf here on the Grand Strand. I myself have caught Reds, Pompano, Spanish Mackerel, Flounder and Blues all in our surf. So how do you fish from the surf. First never go with one rod. I like to rig up one rod to throw deep. Your best bet is a heavy surf rod meant to cast long. The difference here is how far out shallow water goes. Up north if
you casted 25 yards off you were in deeper water, here you need to put a little effort in. Either sling it as far and hard as you can, or if it’s warm, wade out as far as you feel comfortable. When I was a kid, we would draw straws to swim the bait out! I don’t recommend that here it’s a little “Sharky. Maybe use a surf board, paddle board or Kayak. Now my deep rig is always the same, a fish finder rig with a Pyramid weight. The Pyramid weight is your best option as it tends to hold in the sand better. The size weight will really depend on how the surf is. Slide the fish finder rig and weight onto your main line then attach a swivel followed by a heavy leader usually 25-50lb then a circle hook. The only exception to this is sometimes if I’m targeting sharks or kings, I will use wire rather than Mono or Fluro for my leader I will put either live/Cut Mullet, squid, or clams. My next rod is always a medium spinning rod rigged with a leader and naked jig head where I can change out my soft plastic baits to cast for Flounder or Trout. I also will keep a small metal with wire rigged up to swap out if Spanish or blues show up. My last rod is a light spinning rod set up for Pompano. You can use a simple double dropper rig much like you would for Spot. The bait of choice for Pompano is Sand fleas but I have also caught them on shrimp. You will also catch Whiting, Croaker, and Flounder using this type of rig. To weed out the Whiting and Croaker I have had success using a popping cork rigged with just 2/0 Circle hook. Using Sand Fleas, the Pompano tend to hang in the actual surf. I usually cast, then slowly work the cork back, in most hits it will come right in the wash. the chance to have a great day fishing. So next time the weather is too rough for the boat or Yak, or you want a change of scenery or your wife drags you to the beach, so she can cook in the sun, don’t forget to bring along your fishing gear and go to work.

Student Angler League Media Release for December 1, 2018 SALTT’s third of 6 trials from Georgetown presented the middle and high school anglers a forecast of guaranteed rain so the director decided to cut the tournament back from a 3:00 weigh in to noon. The shorter tournament required the boat captains and anglers to prepare a plan around low tide that seemed to work out with many kids making the scales. Middle School Redfish Division was won by Cubby Weaver who attends the Coastal Montessori Charter School with 2 fish at 8.47 pounds. He fished solo and caught the big fish at 4.58 pounds. Second place went to Chappell Miller and Owen Powell from Georgetown Middle with 6.83 pounds. Third place was Donavan Harris (Conway Middle) and Wyatt Moore (Whittemore Park Middle) with 6.77 pounds. High School Redfish Division was won by Andrew High’s Dylan Skipper and Walker McKenzie with 2 fish at 4.40 pounds. They also caught the big fish at 2.33 pounds. No other teams in this division placed. Middle School Bass Division was won by Loris Middle’s Gavin Porter with 1 fish at 2.08 pounds, so he also won big fish. Second place went to Rosemary Middle’s Keegan Wildes with 1 fish at .96 pounds. High School Bass Division was won by Conway High’s Jacob Martin fishing solo with 2 fish at 5.59 pounds and big fish at 2.92 pounds. Georgetown High’s Andrew Ackerman and Jeremy Owens took second with 4.10 pounds. The Holmes Brothers of Charlie (Conway High) and Chase (Conway Middle) won third with 1 fish at 1.48 pounds. The next tournament will be February 16th from Carroll A Campbell in Georgetown. CONWAY A HISTORIC RIVERTOWN
waccamawoutfitters.com On The River with Matt Varnadore 4 Elm St · Conway, SC (843) 488-3121 or (843) 248-1713 HAPPY NEW YEAR!! I sincerely hope everyone had a great Christmas and is looking forward to a successful New Year. Ringing in the New Year is like getting a fresh start and a clean slate. We all in a since get to “start over.” It’s also resolution time for many of us. Many will resolve to lose weight, save money, slow down, speed up, fish more etc.… I am not one to make resolutions because like so many I will inevitably break them, so I don’t waste my time. January marks one year that I have been writing for the Coastal Angler Magazine. When asked to do this I was a little uncertain because I had never done anything like this before. I was given the challenge to write about the Waccamaw River and all it has to offer. During my time I reached topics about the river and what it has to offer and learned so much more about our river. So maybe in a since I made a resolution that I kept for once in my life. I resolved to step outside my box and comfort area and do something new. I am no professional writer, but I have had a great time writing about not only our river, but our town Conway as well. This leads me to my point. This year make it a point to explore the Waccamaw River and visit Conway. If you have never made the run from the ICW I encourage you all to do so. We have a lot to offer. We have plenty of dock space at the marina or along the river front for you to dock and stay the day or night. We also have a marina with fuel and supplies, bars, restaurants, and shops all within walking distance from the river. If you would like to do an overnighter, we can handle that too. Just call the Cypress Inn Bed and Breakfast and stay the night. It is an approximate 15 mile run from the ICW to Conway. While you are coming in take time to stop at one of the local beaches for a swim or ski your way down. There are endless opportunities along the river. If you do decide to make the trip and have any questions, please feel free to give us at Waccamaw Outfitters a call (843-488-3121). We will be more than happy to give you as much information as we can. If we cannot help you, we can certainly direct you to those who can. Again, we hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and we hope to see you “reel” soon On the River.

W
atching a 20+ pound opalescent silver fish rocket 6 feet into the air with your live bait clamped in its jaws is a sight to behold. Starting on October 3rd and lasting approximately four days, Folly Beach had the best run of king mackerel in the entire history of the pier. A grand total of 24 king mackerel were decked, a number that far exceeded the amount caught at any other east coast pier for the week. Many people had the opportunity to fight their first king off a pier and several anglers even managed to limit out on kings, which up until now has been virtually unheard of at Folly. The largest king was landed by Stephen Baum and weighed 36lbs. In recent years, the Folly pier has been notorious for its underwhelmingly low catch rates of king mackerel, but the insane action of October 3rd-6th clearly demonstrated that
kings are very much still frequenting the waters of Folly Beach and that there is a lot more to catch off the pier than just redfish. King mackerel can be targeted off piers using trolley rigs, set ups consisting of two rods – a 12’ to 16’ surf rod and a shorter rod with a large conventional reel, both of which are spooled with 20-25lb high-vis mono. The angler first uses the surf rod to cast an anchor weight as far away from the pier as possible with the intent of digging the weight securely into the bottom. The second rod is rigged with a 5-6ft wire leader and two treble hooks baited with a live bluefish, menhaden, blue runner, or mullet. A sliding release clip is then used to attach the swivel of the leader to the anchor line and slide the bait down to the water where it is suspended just under the surface. When a king strikes,
the release clip is pulled from the swivel, releasing the line and allowing the angler to fight the fish directly. Kings are renowned for their explosive strikes, sometimes skyrocketing into the air before making blistering runs that strip off several hundred yards of line. Although certain moments can be tedious and frustrating, everything is well worth it when conditions align to make for an epic day. The sheer chaos and adrenaline of October 3rd – 6th were stark contrast to the past several years of kingfishing at Folly Beach. Folly king fishermen are optimistic that the pier will continue to produce high numbers of kings in the coming years, and we hope a lot more people will come out and try their luck for kings off the Folly pier. The Sea Trout bite has been incredible this year and look for this to continue through the winter. Live shrimp on popping corks are the go to option but also plenty of success on top water using Mirrolures. Red and Black Drum are also being caught using a Carolina Rig with live shrimp or mullet is the best option. Offshore with Grouper season closed, but you still have the opportunity to catch some good Snapper if you’re willing to make a long run offshore. Golden Tilefish and Snowy Grouper are also a great option for bottom fishing.
A number of Flounder are still being caught well in Murrells Inlet. The go to has been Vudu Shrimp in almost any color. The Sea Trout will also eat these up especially under a popping cork. 50-100 Sea Trout a day are being reported and look for this to continue through the winter. The Georgetown Jetties are holding plenty of Redfish and Black Drum using live mullet or shrimp is the go to for the Reds where dead shrimp or squid is the option for Black drums. Offshore the Wahoo bite is in full swing look for this to stay steady throughout the winter. Bottom fishing will continue to produce plenty of fish and look for the larger Sea Bass to move closer in as the water temps drop.
Winter is a slow time for both pier and surf fishing but the opportunity to catch fish is still there. Redfish reports are still coming in from surf fishermen. Using cut mullet is the key. The piers will also still produce some fish using a double dropper rig with squid or shrimp will get you small Sea Bass, Whiting and Croaker.
Clams and Oysters are best used by opening them and removing the Clams or Oysters and lacing them on the hook. For those of you that BY JIGGIN’ JERRY find it difficult to keep them on the hook, you may try packaging them by using a small cut piece of pantyand skill before full Winter sets in. hose or bait netting and wrapping it After all, you sure would not want to around the bait like a Christmas gift miss one of those big 8- to 14-pound and then pushing the hook through Sheepshead because your gear and it. Winter Sheepshead
Y
es, Winter officially starts on the 21st of December, but for those of us who cannot wait any longer and would like to take advantage of the cooling water temperatures can start targeting larger Sheepshead now. The most common bait used for Sheepshead through the Summer and Fall here in the Lowcountry are Fiddler Crabs, but as the temperatures drop, local Fiddler Crabs will start to slow down and appear in the marshes less often. The Sheepshead are quite aware of this and will start to feed more aggressively on shellfish, like Barnacles, Oyster, Mussels and Clams. Of course, as the water temperature drops, the Pinfish, Croaker and Perch will become less active and begin their journey to deeper waters, allowing the angler to successfully use shellfish with less risk of these bait stealers reaching it before your Sheepshead. So, now would be the time to practice up your technique

stripes in all their glory, and the bigger fish you see, the bigger breath you will take! The main method for catching sheephead will be lowering your line alongside of structure where you believe Sheepshead to be and waiting for that very soft bite. In this case, I recommend not going for the hookset immediately as soon as you see the tip of your rod wiggle. Instead, lean into the fish, allowing the fish to take in the bait and the hook and swim away, while you lean forward with the rod, and within a couple of seconds, set the hook, and in most cases, you will find yourself with a Sheepshead at the other end of your line. I hope this helps everyone with their next Sheepshead fishing adventure. Until next time, and like I always say, good luck out there and have fun fishing! with this coupon! Yak Corner BY TODD METZ TO PADDLE OR NOT TO PADDLE… THAT IS THE QUESTION.
H
appy New Year fellow kayak fisherman! I sure hope you had a great 2018 but that you have even a better 2019. So, I must ask….Did anyone get a new toy for Christmas, like a yak? If not, tax time is just around the corner. After all, you never have enough kayaks! I want to start the year off with a little controversial subject that will make the true kayak purist squeeze their paddles until they break. Even the slightest murmur of using anything but a paddle to propel a yak is fighting words in the kayak community. So, let’s take the gloves off and get right to it. Long before the wind driven sails of the early ships, there were dugout canoes, rafts and reed boats. Of course, there were also skin boats or as we know them…kayaks that were first used over 5000 years ago. All of these were propelled using some sort of paddle or pole. There is no wonder why the kayak purist still believes that the yaks of today should still be powered by hand. However, with the invention
of the Minn Kota trolling motor in the early 1930’s and the pedal drive by Hobie Kayaks in 1997, kayakers now have other options to propel their boats. They all have their benefits and pitfalls. For the purist, there is only the paddle. They would never even consider anything else. But, why a paddle. Why subject yourself to the agony and grueling act of using a stick to propel your boat against the wind and current. Let me explain. Kayaks were made for travel to and from one point to another to gather food, scout new land and to transport goods. The kayaks stealthyness allowed hunters to pursue their game unnoticed as they do the with fisherman today. Paddlers love the quietness and tranquility the kayak has as it glides across the water with only the sound of a paddle stroke. I must admit, when you are paddling though a cypress swamp there is something very soothing to the quietness. Lastly, your arms may burn, and you may tire out a bit, but you will not stall, run out of gas or lose
battery power. Keep in mind, paddles can break. I always have a backup stored in the hull. Taking the human power one step further, the pedal drive system affords the kayak angler yet another advantage to getting to the fish. If any purist did step away from the paddle, it would be to the pedal drive. The pedal drive is a mechanical device that sets in front of the pilot and they use their feet to “pedal” the kayak through the water. Hobie, has developed a fin system while others use a propeller. Unlike the paddle, these tend to be a bit noisier but are quicker. You are also using larger muscle groups and therefore can go farther and longer between rest stops. As for fishing, pedals give the angler a hands-free approach to be able to fish. Keep in mind, this is a mechanical device that can and will break. Don’t forget to bring a paddle! Lastly, the trolling motor is most likely the last thing a purist would ever put on their kayak. After all, if you put a motor on it, then why don’t you just by a boat? As much as I enjoy the peace and quiet of the paddle, I sure do like the speed and painless venture a trolling motor can provide. I know I can get to the fish quicker with less effort in
COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THE ANGLERMAG.COM
almost any condition. The challenge is mounting the motor and battery weight. If you are looking to get a mount for a motor, I would search Kevin Dismuke’s Lightweight and removable motor mounts on YouTube. He has them for just about all brands of kayaks. There are a variety of ways to install them and to mount the controls. Most are steered with the rudder system foot controls allowing the fisherman both hands to fish as with the pedal drive. If you do choose to go this route, don’t plan on fishing any tournaments. Most do not allow motors of any kind on the yak. Although, the trolling motor may get you there quicker, it can still fail, or the battery can die. Again, don’t for your paddle. Whether you choose to be purist or a rebel, it is your choice on what you want to do. Do what you feel is best for your style or circumstance. They all have their place and time in our kayak world. Always have fun and until next time, keep those paddles, pedals, or motors wet and fish on!!

T
he operations of the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park (ECLSP) have changed over its more than half century of existence. Designated a “no take marine reserve in 1986, no fishing or taking of any organism (including plants and shells) is allowed. The ECLSP is known internationally for its pristine marine environment and offers visitors exceptional diving and recreational opportunities. Recently the Marine Conservation Institute announced that the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park earned a Platinum Global Ocean Refuge Award. Joining a prestigious group of ten marine protected areas (MPAs) that comprise the Global Ocean Refuge System means that Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park meets the highest science-based standards for biodiversity protection and best practices for management. Each year, thousands of vessels visit and overnight in the ECLSP. Years ago, the Bahamas National Trust introduced a mooring and anchorage system with fees to reduce the impact. A new fee structure will come into force effective Jan. 1. Mooring fees are based on the size of the vessel and range from $20 to $150 per day. Daily/nightly anchorage fees are 50 cents or $1 per foot depending on the length of the vessel. Dive fees are $10 per diver. For more information, visit www.bnt.bs/exuma-cays-land-seapark/.

FRESHWATER
Since 2015, Frabill has continued to set the quiet standard in bucket conversion. The Frabill Whisper Quiet Aerator system is a portable, aeration design that provides the utmost discretion when fishing with live bait. Constructed with 75 years of experience, the Whisper Drive Aeration Motor has been specifically designed and tested to keep saltwater baitfish and crustaceans healthy and active while emitting minimal sound. With a couple of batteries, the Whisper Quiet Aerator converts any size cooler or bucket into an oxygen-rich livewell. Frabill’s top-of-the-line signature yellow air stone creates enough bubbles to effectively aerate up to 15 gallons of water. As a result of its over-engineered rugged design, Frabill’s Whisper Quiet Aerator has a long shelf life. The aeration system includes premium water-resistant internal parts that help prevent corrosion and won’t let an angler down. Never be surprised by battery rot again.

Surprising Winter is the Best Planting Time
I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly
at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste
better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature. Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant. Let’s Grow Together. Greg Ison, Ison’s Nursery and Vineyards, 800733-0324, www.isons.com
