SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

By Capt. Cefus McRae, Nuts & Bolts of Fishing Series

I

spend a lot of time on the water, but I still get excited every time I go fishing. The thrill of feeling the strike and hearing a drag sing, and ultimately landing the fish puts a smile on my face that’s hard to wipe off. Years ago, a great friend and charter captain from Steinhatchee, Fla., Capt. Brian Smith, invited me to go on a “thrill fishing” trip. I didn’t know exactly what that meant, and I had certainly never caught a “thrill” fish. Was it some newly discovered deep-water species? As Capt. B explained, the objective was to simply go have fun and experience the thrill of fishing again. We weren’t focusing on

a particular fish or even a particular style of fishing. We were out there to have fun. When I thought about it, this made perfect sense. A lot of us have forgotten the thrill of fishing. We’re so wrapped up in competing in a tournament. Or we’re too serious about catching fish because it’s the only weekend we have to get away. We become so focused on fishing that we forget to have fun. That thrill-fishing experience with Brian brought things back in to perspective. Thrill fishing is pretty easy, especially in a salty environment because the variety is tremendous. You set out a trolling spread of natural and artificial baits and wait for a rod to bend. There’s typically something out there eager to play. One of my favorites is the under-appreciated bonito. When they’re schooling, you can catch them on just about anything shiny that makes a commotion. And they put up a fight that equals a fish twice their size. They are an absolutely beautiful fish, although not at the top of my list for table fare. Enjoy the fight, take a photo, and send them back to the briny depths. Barracuda also rate high on my thrill-fish list. They will eat just about anything, and they are quick to take a trolled lure like a big tube eel. They jump, they tug hard, and there’s the excitement of having something toothy at the boat. Now, thrill fishing doesn’t necessarily mean you’re after “trash fish.” Big grouper will rise off the bottom and attack a big diving plug. It’s kind of like opening presents at Christmas, you don’t really know what might be in the box. It’s all about the experience. This is especially true with kids, or with folks who don’t fish very often. With a crew of kids, the most fun of the day can be when we’re catching bait. A four-inch pinfish is a trophy to a five year old, and a foot-long blue runner is a monster. As many of us know, attitude plays a large role in how your day on the water goes. Since that eye-opening trip with Capt. Brian, I am continually reminded that fishing is as much about the thrill as it is about what you put in the cooler. Capt. Cefus McRae hosts the TV show Nuts & Bolts of Fishing on Fox Sports South.

or some time I’ve been interested in how fishermen in different times and places fish. I’d like to think I can become a better angler by looking at different cultures and time periods, maybe learning from successful practices around the world and avoiding those that don’t work. Some time ago in this column, I wrote about the fish wheels that natives in Alaska use and suggested other fishermen could employ such wheels in rivers all over the country. This time I’d like to discuss a really unusual type of fishing: from stilts. The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) tells us that the world has around 38 million fishermen, including commercial fishermen. I also learned that fisheries and aquaculture operations provide employment to over 500 million people in developing countries. That figure does not include recreational fishermen. The attached photo of stilt fishermen in Sri Lanka by Bernard Gagnon depicts a scene that a lot of us have never seen in person. The fishermen patiently sit on their stilts waiting for the fish that they expect will pass by them in the shallow waters below or over the coral reef. The practice goes back about seven or eight decades and doesn’t seem to have evolved too much. It seems to have begun during World War II, when overcrowded conditions and food shortages forced enterprising fishermen to try different methods of catching fish. After using the wrecks of downed airplanes and capsized ships from which to cast their lines, the men actually built their first stilts over the coral reefs,

which provided a sturdy base on which to build their flimsylooking wooden mini-towers. Or they thrust their poles deep into the sand beneath the water and tied a cross bar to the vertical pole. They would then carefully climb up poles and perch in what seems like a precarious position. The fishermen go out at dawn and dusk, cast their lines into the water, and wait for the passing schools of fish. Lucky anglers can catch herring or mackerel passing by, but the occasional monsoons and tsunamis have altered the coastline too much to make stilt fishing very viable today. It’s true that some of the local fishermen pose on the stilts for camera-toting tourists, especially when the fish are not running or when the threat of monsoons might drive away the fish and the anglers. The practice will probably die out because it is so hard and has diminishing results as the ocean there changes and as villagers move inland to get away from tsunamis. I doubt if the practice of stilt fishing will catch on in Florida, but I still find it useful and informative to see how anglers throughout the world fish. Jig of the Month

s we transition from fall to winter you can expect the water temps to remain in the low 70’s. You will want to spend most of your time fishing the bay and brackish waters near river mouths. The bait of choice this time of year will be live shrimp. Rigging shrimp under a popping cork will lead to more bites, with the action and noise of the cork grabbing the attention of everything nearby. Tie the cork to the top of your leader and pop it often to keep the fish curious. Hook the shrimp towards the back of the head, just before the body. Oyster bars in the bay will hold plenty of mullet and gamefish this time of year. You can expect redfish and snook to be lurking in these areas during winter low tides and be on the lookout for tailing redfish in the skinny water. As these fish scavenge for food in the mud and around oyster bars, you will sometimes see their tails sticking out of the water. This is always an awesome sight to see, as well as a great opportunity to sight cast these fish. Cast your bait within 10ft of these tailers and you are likely to get a strike. Cut mullet on the bottom will weed out the smaller fish and provide a better chance of hooking an overslot monster. Free-lined shrimp will get the job done on everything else that's chewing. Fishing the mangroves for sheepshead during December will yield great results. You can expect to catch plenty of these convict fish within a few hours-if you can hook them. The locals call them convict fish because of their black and silver striped appearance and their tendency to steal bait off your hook. Sheepshead have humanlike incisors and strange looking molar teeth, which helps them nibble the bait off your hook. You may find that you are just giving them free meals all day, so feeding your hook through the shrimp’s body,

Kevin King with a slob sheepshead! makes it much more difficult to steal and will increase your hookups. Smaller hooks are going to work much better, I usually don't go above a 1/0. Look for areas with moving water and deep cuts, as these spots will hold the most fish. Although they may be difficult to catch, after a bit of patience and learning how to hook them, you will have some excellent fish to eat for dinner. You will come across many other species of fish this time of year including jacks, trout, puffer fish, snook, reds, and black drum ambushing baits in these same areas, which will keep things interesting. Remember to slow things down with the cooler water temps. Many of these fish will be lethargic and moving at a slower pace. For you guys using artificial, a slow retrieve will get the most action. The winter bite takes a little more patience but it's well worth it. Good luck out there guys and happy holidays! You can reach Brent by email at brent@paddlenaples.com or by phone at 239-3018888. The Reset Button? by Capt. Bill D’Antuono

B

ig change swings mean the fish are moving around. It’s almost like someone hit the reset button on the Gulf of Mexico. After Irma ravaged the mainland, the fish followed behind it. Cobia have been showing up in numbers and hogfish have moved in as well. Large sheepshead will be covering the nearshore reefs and gag grouper will be around in depths around 45’. Water temps will dip into the low 70’s and mid 60’s, Ethan Olah on an Offshore so prepare yourself accordingly. Naples charter with two I chose a 5mm suit with a hood nice hogs and big lobster! to keep me warm. I also utilize hot water from the motor to keep going all day. Once that air temperature dips into the 70’s it’s a whole new ballgame. We have been getting what I like the call the ‘surf and turf special’, hogfish and lobster. Two of the best eating species out there. If you have any red grouper bottom for hook and line, chances are it holds lobster and hogfish. Another fish that hangs out on this terrain is lionfish. My favorite way to cook lionfish is to make some ceviche, it’s amazing. These can be deeper dives so nitrox certification is key for the deeper dives and we always dive with computers. Let’s hope for a mild winter as the days and opportunities to get offshore can be limited due to weather. A mild, dry winter would mean fewer releases from Lake Okeechobee, which gives us great visibility closer to shore. I would rather run 10 miles offshore instead of 30 in search of fish! We had one mild winter back in 2015 and the visibility was outstanding and we Capt. Bill with a 10lb red landed a lot of quality fish grouper caught rod and reel. within sight of Naples that year. If you would like to book a charter, I am now running a 30’ Contender and going weekly. The pictures speak for themselves! Offshore Naples LLC will put you on the fish or if you would like to do a sightseeing dive there are plenty of incredible locations offshore of Naples. My goal has been to form a dive community locally. Everyone thinks of SCUBA diving in the Florida Keys or East Coast, well, let me tell you, Naples has a lot to offer underwater too.

SWFL’s Freshwater Scene

M

THERE’S A KUBOTA FOR EVERY JOB, EVERY HARVEST, EVERY TASK

by Capt. Roan Zumfelde

erry Christmas to all and hope your fishing trips are wonderful and fish are plentiful. The winter winds are starting to blow and the coolness is in the air. This is not always a bad thing, it sure makes being in the outdoors more enjoyable and sometimes really stacks the fish up where they can get to a little warmer water. The bass can really fire up just before a front comes through. The only problem is if you are fishing the day after the front passes then it gets a little difficult. My only suggestion is to slow down, when you think you are moving you lure slow enough, then try moving it a little slower. Lake Okeechobee fishing should be excellent this month. Bass fishing on the lake will be in full swing and the main lake water levels should be starting to drop down and make the bass more concentrated. This should make the Rim Canal and any traditionally deeper water corridors much better. North End of the lake should really start to get good especially if the winds start to blow out of the North. Fishing for bluegills will be on the decline but crappie should really start taking over for all you pan fisherman. Small Jigs and even flies work well on them. I like to throw small bead head Wooley Buggers for them. The bead causes a more up and down erratic action. Ski Oleski, out at Trafford Marine is not only excited about it being the holidays this month, but thinks it is one of the best months to catch crappie on the lake. He says small jigs will catch them but Missouri minnows work the best. He believes the fishing is really getting better all the time on the lake and from what his anglers are telling him and me, I do believe it is true. Bass fishing on the lake this month should be excellent as well. From top to bottom you should find plenty of bass action. If an early front brings the temps down, I might suggest fishing slow sinking creature baits, or jig and pig combo in heavy cover. Something that falls relatively slow like a Senko type worm should also work well.

by Capt. JimKalvin Getting to that time of the season – where late summer fishing and boating gives way to winter fishing and boating. What does that mean? Well, in case you are relatively new to the area, let me explain: The summer has ended, the north winds will blow. So anglers from offshore to the backwaters will go. The bait pods will scatter, artificials will rule. It’s time to put new mono line on the spool. The Guy Harvey Tees will be hung on their racks, while folks sport Columbia shirts on their backs. Cast nets will be put in the polebarn with care, bait buckets will hang from the boats everywhere. The north winds will blow and the water will chill - and waterfront eateries will jam heel to heel. With waterways crowded and dock spaces scarce, to Rookery Bay and points south we’ll disperse. Chasing the trout, flounder, snook, and some snapper, the larger boats won’t even know what we’re after. They watch as we disappear ‘round the bend, wonder how we find our way out once again. The water is skinny, the sun will be vague. But we’ll make the most out of each Winter day. We’ll wrap up in hoodies, Snikwahs, and socks - while bluejeans might even be seen on the docks! Once back to the ramp, the marina, or home – rinse the gear off, and try to get warm. Cause tomorrow’s a new day to surf the conditions, and carry on our most sacred traditions Of running the back bays – all calm we’re a-wishin. Just living the dream, tryin’ to get paid to go fishin’! Seriously, as the waterways get more crowded, please realize that “you’re already there” even if you’re miles away from your destination. Remember that the journey is the adventure, and take it slow. Language Barrier by Capt. James Marko

T

his past month I got to experience a major language barrier on my boat. I had some clients that flew here from Germany because they saw me on TV with the goliath grouper. My client’s name was Max and he was an avid fisherman. We started with exchanging emails back-and-forth and he told me his best redfish was 45” and his best snook was 39”, so I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy trip. When we finally met at the dock, the first five minutes was extremely awkward because there was no English. A few words he did know, somewhat of the basics, so it was a start. We started off the trip to find bait for the goliath grouper and ran into tarpon. I had everything ready and laid out a quick plan. Within about 5 minutes we were on. I tried my best to explain how to fight this fish and anyone that knows tarpon knows it’s hard to enough to learn in 5 minutes in English, so imagine my difficulty. The first jump survived but the second he broke off, due to the fact Max was yanking back on the rod. After that excitement, we ran into a school Jack’s; luckily, he knew what he was doing there and we grabbed a dozen in the live well. We headed off to Boca Grande to target Goliath. We dropped our first bait and within seconds we were on. It ended up being about a 100-pound Goliath. We went in for the next try and hooked into a bigger boy that ended up being over 250 pounds. Anyone that has fought this fish around structure knows it’s the ultimate tug of war. A man using a setup valued at over 1k with no drag, pulling against a 250-pound fish...I was nervous. I ran up, loosened the drag to give the client a better chance of landing the fish. I work with Fish and Wildlife so we take the fish extremely close to the beach to conduct a biopsy, plus get some measurements. I generally use 20/0 circle hook, with a 400lb mono leader by TrikFish and 800lb braid from Tuf-Line. I use the Makira 50w reel with a Dan James Custom Rod, which has held up against 520 lb. fish. After we conducted our study we got some great pictures and released the fish to conduct some data for the research we’re doing. If you would like to be a part of a study, visit my website or Instagram for more information at www.Goliathfishing.com or @ captjamesmarko. As always enjoy and protect our waters.

Lock it Down, Keep it Safe

T

by Mark Raudenbush

here is a bit of a crime wave ongoing in Florida recently. Thefts of outboard engines, lower units and propellers have been reported all over the state. There is debate as to where these parts end up after they are stolen. Some say they are resold locally at non-factory authorized shops, others suspect they are shipped offshore to third world countries. Wherever they go, the theft comes as s tremendous expense and burden to the victims and our insurance companies. It would seem at first there is little we can do. These thieves are clever and they rarely seem to be caught. They strike in locked storage yards and well lit shops. They swim quietly through neighborhood canals in the latest hours of the night. They are a tricky bunch. The situation however reminds me of the story of when a bear attacks your campsite. You don’t have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun the slowest guy in the camp. When it comes to protecting your investment, you don’t have to make it impossible to steal, but it helps if your boat and its parts are harder to steal than others these thieves might hit. By putting obstacles in the way of a thief they are more likely to pass you by in favor of an easier mark down the road. At Wolcott Marine we have a full compliment of locks that are designed to help make thefts of your investment more difficult, reducing the likelihood you’ll become a victim. Prop locks replace

the prop nut on your engine with a proprietary socket. Lower unit locks replace one of the lower unit bolts with a special stainless steel bolt with a unique “key” and engine locks surround the head of one of your engine mounting bolts with a little vault operable only with a key. Yes, certainly a persistent enough thief given time and tools can defeat any of these devices, but the point isn’t to be impossible just to be difficult enough that a thief is likely to pass you by in favor of an easier target. One aside, particularly with prop nuts and lower unit locks, keep the key handy. If you travel with the boat make sure those keys travel too. Should you ding a prop or lose a water pump you’re going to need those keys. Call us to set an appointment and we’ll help you lock it down, keep it safe, and prevent engine, lower unit, and propeller thefts. In a later column we’ll discuss whole boat thefts and the things we can do to prevent those.

ish everywhere you can. Well, that’s what I try to do. I am always thinking and searching for the right location for the current conditions. This could be the upcoming weekend in my local waters, a fair-weather destination while mine is blown out, or a place to set the hook while on a business trip or family vacation. Several years ago, my wife had to travel to Aruba for business. When she mentioned Aruba, the first thing I did was research the area she would be staying, from a fish-eye perspective. When I found it was on the beachfront, I was booking my flight. This was fly rod territory, so some casting practice was in order for me. I continued my research for species, tactics and tackle typically used in the area. I was open to catch anything, but bonefish were at the forefront of my list. You can never get enough information on fishing tactics and techniques, and I always search for new ways of doing things to hone my skills. If I am planning to fish a new area, species, or just wanting to learn more about my area, I find it helpful to use all available resources. Books, articles and videos, like the ones from Trout Support, are all great avenues to strengthen your skills. Conditions were perfect each day we were in Aruba. The wind was calm and the water was clear, which made spotting the fish easy. Each morning, I was able to land some jacks and other species that I didn’t identify, and I had a few shots at small bones and even a few tarpon. The tarpon were small and something I could potentially handle with my gear, but they kept their distance and never came into my casting range. As the tourists made their way out, I packed up my gear and headed away from the crowd. I spotted my first good-size bone, and as my adrenalin rushed I made my cast. The accuracy was right on target, but the line slapped against the water with force and away she went. The fact that I do not fly fish very often became obvious. I stayed in that area for a while practicing my cast to make it more natural while making my way down the shore picking up a few more jacks. Then I saw the shadow! I assessed the movement of the fish, calmed myself and made the cast. She streaked through the crystal-clear flat, causing me to fear the line would sever on the abundance of coral lining the sea floor. After a long and nerve-racking battle, I had my trophy in hand and watched her swim away. Destination fishing can be successful even without an outfitter if you do your research ahead of time. A little time studying can save you a lot of money, and the rewards can be just as good or better because you’ll know you did it yourself. Just remember to fish everywhere! Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

EXPERT ADVICE

Gifts for Anglers Choosing Sunglasses As A Gift DAVID MANEY, FOWLER’S SUNGLASSES

C

hoosing a pair of sunglasses as a gift for someone else can be a tricky endeavor. On the one hand you have your opinion of what you think they will like and then there’s the issue of the fit and their face shape that can make all the difference in the world in their overall happiness with the pair that you’ve selected. Obviously, the best way to ensure your selection is exactly what they’re looking for is to have them help you. Go to your favorite sunglass seller, and let your friend try numerous pairs on. Then, once you know their favorite, the task is easy and foolproof. But if you’re not able to put that together prior to a purchase, the next best alternative is to make sure the company you’re buying the sunglasses from has an honest, no-loophole return policy. Yes, save your receipt. I also recommend including a small note with the sunglasses saying: I hope these fit, and are what you wanted. The store name here said you can exchange them if you like. At Fowler’s, we make sure our customers have an easy and helpful exchange process. The right pair of sunglasses can be a gift that is appreciated for many, many years, and we make giving the perfect gift a little bit easier.
