hile mystic grouper can be caught year-round in the Bahamas, the winter months are our favorite time of year. Whenever a weather window presents itself, we point our bow east across the Florida Straights in search of these deep-water bottom dwellers. Mystics are one of the lesser-known grouper species, simply because anglers don’t fish deep enough to target them. Like all grouper, they are excellent to eat and usually weigh from 15 to 50 pounds, although they can grow much larger. It takes special gear to fish the 800- to 1,200-foot depths where we find mystics. Armed with Shimano Tiagra 80 WAs and Shimano Tiagra 50 WAs equipped with Hooker Electric Autostop drives, we string up 65- to 100-pound Power Pro braid on Crafty One Custom’s Deep Drop Rods. We begin by paying close attention to our Humminbird Solix sonar with CHIRP HD digital technology to locate bottom structure. We look for cones, holes, drop-offs, ledges and deep-water ridges. Once viable structure is located, we position the boat above it with engines out of gear to judge how wind and current will manipulate our drift. Then the

boat is repositioned up-current from the structure and the deep-drop rigs are readied. When targeting mystics, we use our www.ThreeBuoysFishing.com grouper deep-drop rigs made with three 8/0 VMC 3x Circle Hooks on 100-pound branch lines off of 12 feet of 150-pound main line. For bait, we prefer fresh-cut 8-inch strips of dolphin, tuna, wahoo or barracuda. Many deep-drop anglers claim, “no light, no bite,” but our experience has proven that, especially with mystics, we catch more and bigger fish without lights. We deploy two rods on opposite sides of the boat. Lead weights in the 10-pound range are the rule of thumb, but weight can be adjusted to the current. After the weights hit bottom, the reels are left in freespool to lay the rigs straight down on the bottom. The engines should be used to decrease the boat’s drift to a standstill, if possible. If the boat drifts, let out line to keep the rigs on bottom. When the rod tip bumps and shakes, resist the urge to lock up the drag and retrieve line. Wait a minute or two for additional fish to sense the commotion. They’ll often eat the remaining baits. When it’s time to strike, lift the reel’s drag to strike (pre-set to 20 pounds of drag) and slowly start your retrieve. Big mystic grouper put up quite a fight at first, and you might even think you’ve hung bottom. Be patient and slowly gain as must line as possible. When fish are about halfway up, their air bladders expand and create lift. They will begin to float your rig up to the surface. For more tips and tactics on deep-dropping and the tackle and rigs to get tight, see www.threebuoysfishing.com. Finding bait becomes more important than at any other time of year. Goebel likes to get out well before dawn in search of shad or herring flickering near the surface, especially when a big moon keeps baitfish active all night. Diving birds are also a dead giveaway. They are likely feeding on baitfish pushed by stripers from below. “A lot of times if there’s bait there, I won’t even worry about marking fish on the graph,” Goebel said. “I’ll just put out my lines and start fishing where the bait is.”

By Nick Carter

T

here aren’t many anglers willing to endure the frigid early morning temperatures of winter on a large reservoir. But for those who can handle a little discomfort, right now is the best time of year to hook up with the striper of a lifetime. Around the Southeast, in reservoirs where striped bass were introduced, falling water temperatures spur changes in behavior that make the largest fish in the lake susceptible to anglers. Those 30- to 50-pounders are feeding up right now. They’re storing up reserves that will take them through the spring spawn. “It’s trophy striper season,” said Shane Goebel, of Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service. “The bigger fish are participating a little better. This time of year, we start going after those big ol’ hogs that are chasing the big baits.” The large summer schools broke up months ago. Stripers are spread out and on the move, following baitfish into the creek mouths and up into the backs of the creeks. Big fish move shallow when water temps hit the mid to low 50s on the lakes Goebel guides in the mountains of north Georgia and western North Carolina. It might take some searching to find them, but the rewards can be huge.

Because the stripers are continually moving with the bait, covering water is crucial. Goebel said to troll as many baits in as wide a spread as you can handle. Herring are great on lakes where they are present, but this time of year you should also work some big gizzard shad or trout into the spread. Sometimes it takes a big mouthful to convince big fish to eat. Goebel runs baits 30 to 40 feet behind planer boards. He’ll drop freelines 100 to 150 feet behind the boat. If the area where he finds bait isn’t too shallow, he’ll put a little bit of weight ahead of the baits on the inside boards to cover more water vertically. He slow trolls at about half a mile per hour. This is a pattern Goebel fishes all the way into May, when stripers have moved into a pre-spawn phase. It might not produce the numbers of fish that downlining into summer mega-schools will, but the fish are generally a lot bigger than those 5- to 10-pound summer schoolies. If catching an enormous striper sounds like fun, zip up your parka and get out on the lake. It’s trophy striper season. Check out Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service at bigolfish.com.

f Costa Rica isn’t already on your bucket list, it should be. Famous for both inshore and offshore fishing, it’s also a country with incredible biodiversity and exciting eco-tourism opportunities. In short, there’s something for every sportsman and adventure seeker here. From a fishing perspective, the west coast of this Central American country is most favored with several significant cities and ports including Jaco, Quepos and, of course, Golfito. It’s Los Suenos, however, where

my wife, Felicia and I found outstanding action on a trip last April. We worked the inshore grounds, catching huge roosterfish, rainbow runners, grouper, jacks and even mahi. We also decked a big cubera snapper. Of course, we did have an edge. Coastal Angler’s very own Costa Rica inshore reporter Capt. Carlos Arguedas and his first-mate son, Christopher, were our charter crew. “This really is a terrific place to fish,” said Arguedas, “We have access to a lot of different spots ranging from very close to the marina to 50 miles away. The roosterfish action is unbelievable here but we also catch big cubera snapper, amberjack, groupers and huge red snappers, too.” Arguedas loves to take clients for roosterfish because they fight so hard, are found close to port, and grow big. He’s had a 90-pounder grace his deck. For these, he’ll slow troll live baits like blue runners, herring, sardines or bonita. All of these baits, impaled on size 8 circle hooks, also attract other large predators; so you never know what to expect when the rod doubles over. “Roosterfish are very impressive when you first see them,” said Arguedas. “They are exotic-looking with big dorsal rays, a huge mouth and striped flanks. They are stunning to see for the first time. They are also exceptionally strong. Fight a 20-pounder and you’ll think you have a 40-pounder at the end of the line. They jump, too, and shake their head, so remember to lower your rod tip when that fish comes up or you’ll tear the hook free.” Among the other big fish that hit the deck for Arguedas’ crew on a regular basis are goliath grouper that can top 400 pounds. These are targeted around local reefs. If you want to run offshore, sailfish, tuna and marlin abound within 10 miles of port. Dorado, sometimes topping 30 pounds, can be tempted within sight of the coast. Costa Rica’s tropical climate makes it a year-round destination. Most travelers prefer to visit during the dry season, which runs from December through April, but you’ll find lighter crowds and lower travel prices during the “green” or rainy season from May to November. Whenever you visit, it really helps to work with a travel pro that deals frequently with Costa Rica to customize a trip here. Blue Water Sportfishing Charters (http://bluewatersportfishingcharters.com) specializes in setting up trips to Los Suenos. They can put you in the right place at the right time for the fish you want to catch, sights you want to see or adventures you want to experience. They’ll also book you with Capt. Carlos—or you can contact him yourself at www.wingmancr.com.

he first time I saw someone spearfishing, I was intrigued and wondered out loud how hard it would be to load a speargun. A friend heard me and said, “I’m sure you can do it. It’s probably more about technique than brute strength.” He was right. It’s not uncommon to struggle to load your first speargun, and you might suspect they made the bands too short. If you give it some time and use the right technique, it will become easy. First, some safety tips: 1) Never load a speargun out of the water. 2) Keep the safety on until you intend to shoot a fish. 3) Even with the safety on, treat it like a loaded weapon, never let the tip point at anyone. 4) Use tip protectors when not in use, so you don’t scratch anything. Some spearguns are loaded by resting the butt of the gun on your hip and pulling the bands toward the shaft notches. Others are loaded by resting the butt high on the middle of the chest and pulling the bands toward your sternum. Hip-loading spearguns are commonly used by scuba divers, as chest loading can be difficult when wearing a buoyancy compensator vest. Freedivers are less constricted by gear, so they normally use chest-loading spearguns. These have longer range because the shaft tabs sit closer to the butt of the gun. Now, some loading tips: 1) Wear gloves and wetsuit to prevent slips, scrapes or bruising. Some wetsuits have a loading pad built into the chest. 2) Don’t look down and hunch over when loading the bands. Push forward with your chest and pull the band swiftly with your arms, so the shaft tabs are pushed forward to meet the incoming

band. 3) Use a loading tab (if using a wood gun). This simple device makes things much easier by allowing you to first hip load the band to the loading tab and then raise the butt to your chest for the final pull. Although it’s a two-step process, it can be done quickly and will feel much easier. 4) If your bands are still too hard to load, use three longer bands. 5) Work out, lift weights, work on core and upper body. Try bench presses, seated rows, bent over rows, pushups and pull-ups. Bands and dumbbells can be incorporated into your workout routine, whether at the gym or home. If you want to see a band loading video, check out Coastal Angler online. And remember—you can accomplish anything you set your mind to! he action in northwest Costa Rica has once again been off the charts as FishingNosara celebrates its 10th season of charter fishing. All five boats are in the water and scoring big for their clients, with 51 trips logged in November. Big dorados are the staple catch this time of year, but it was a welcome surprise to see swarms of billfish in the mix. The team nabbed 12 marlin releases, 24 sailfish releases, 217 dorados, and five roosterfish releases. One of these roosters was a nearworld-record at 72 pounds. On Nov. 19, Capt. Alex on the Harvester posted the best trip of the month with Terry and Julie Edwards’ group. They loaded up the trophy case with excellent releases. A 300-plus-pound blue marlin was the headliner of the trip for these Texas anglers, and shortly after that battle, the 32-foot mega panga nabbed a wonderful sailfish release. Team Edwards came inshore to finish the day, and saved the best for last… that massive 72-pound roosterfish.

2

The IGFA All-Tackle Record for roosterfish is 114 pounds, and the second-place fish is 85 pounds. This fish caught by the Harvester wasn’t far off the second place catch. Most impressively, the above-mentioned IGFA record catches were posted in 1960 and 1954 respectively. This size of roosterfish has not been seen in more than five decades. On the same day, other members of Julie Edwards’ family had a big time on the 32-foot Discoverer with a blue marlin release of their own. Capt. Carlos estimated this fish at 250 pounds upon release. Also in November, FishingNosara Hall of Famer Bill Harris took to the 28-foot bar-room brawler Explorer and opened up her season with a billfish grand slam! A big blue marlin was the highlight of the morning, and it was followed by a late-day striped marlin. Bill nabbed the first marlin, and Mark Scott scored the second. A nice Pacific sailfish caught by Diane Turner completed the grand slam for these Tampa, Fla.based anglers. They didn’t go home empty handed, either, thanks to five big tasty dorado catches spread throughout the day. On the Discoverer, the team of Eli Bedran, Andrew Lipps, Kelsey Harry and Laurie Harry report a fantastic blue marlin release, the first of the year for the big battleship, plus six lovely dorados. John Purdy, John Van Diver, Mike Pickelsimer and Dale McElroy fished in early November and reported 11 sweet dorados on ice. The Harvester has been itching for action, and found what she was looking for as these monsters topped out at 60 pounds. The action was so hot that Capt. Alex chose to release the biggest cows so as not to hurt the stocks. Naturally, we have full reports of all these catches and more archived at Blog.FishingNosara.com, including videos. January and February will be super-busy and the spring months are already filling up fast. Get your plans together so we can secure your fishing adventure with FishingNosara, some of the best sportfishing in Costa Rica.

oel’s Distributing in south Florida has reached a milestone—40 years in business. Not many operations can make that claim, and so a look down memory lane seems appropriate. Tom Noel, aka Paddleboat Tom, moved to Florida from Michigan in 1979. He closed his grocery store, loaded a pickup truck with three paddleboats, his wife Joy, two sons, a daughter and the family dog and headed south. Tom set up shop in his garage in their Lake Clarke Shores home. After a few years, Joy put her foot down and insisted that he find a warehouse. Tom rented a space next to their current location, just off Forest Hill Blvd in West Palm Beach. A couple of years later he bought the 3,000 square-foot warehouse. Tom’s sons Rob and Tom are also involved with the business. Noel’s Distributing sells safety equipment, fire extinguishers, flares, rope, anchors and a warehouse full of other boating supplies to their clients, predominately in the Keys, along the east coast and in central Florida. They will ship anywhere. Many of their clients search them out for their custom rope splicing and then discover the realm of equipment they carry. If you are looking for anything marine related, it’s worth a phone call. They are generally a better value than the larger chain stores. Tom and his sons are very thankful for their longtime clients. ahoo Smackdown X, hosted by the historic Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina on Nov. 8-12, saw 23 boats competing for more than $25,000 in cash and prizes. Out of the 23 competing boats, 22 teams landed fish, bringing 152 wahoo to the scales in the process. Team Who’s Your Daddy took top team honors with 16 fish weighing a total of 231.5 pounds and took home $15,000 in cash winnings. Second place was Team Blitzsea, which earned $7,500 in cash for their 21 fish and a total catch weight of 206.4 pounds. Team Murderize, out of Freeport, Grand Bahama, finished third, taking home $2,500 in cash winnings for a catch of 11 fish with a total catch weight of 193.6 pounds. Team Little Giant caught the largest wahoo of the tournament at 50.7 pounds. Tournament festivities included live local entertainment nightly, a cocktail reception poolside for the captains’ meeting, a cookout on day one of the tournament, and a closing awards party on the great lawn, featuring a buffet, live entertainment and a full open bar. Sponsors for this year’s tournament include American Beverage Marketers (www.masterofmixes.com) as the Title Sponsor, Bahamian Brewery and Beverage (Sands), artist David Dunleavy, Tropic Ocean Airways, Caza Offshore, Live Wire Tackle, Flanigan’s, CS Custom Lures and Bimini Big Game Club. With more than 50-record-setting catches in the waters around the island, Bimini has often been referred to as the Sport Fishing Capital of the World. The Big Game Club opened for business in 1947. Owner Neville Stewart saw the promise and allure of fishing and personally developed and encouraged tournaments. He sold his interest to Bacardi, which over 30 years grew the tradition with many memorable tournaments. The current owners, the Southern California-based Hankey Group, put the iconic fishing resort back in play in 2010 and are completing a multi-million-dollar renovation, that includes numerous capital improvements to the rooms, restaurant and lounge, landscaping, new pool and a renovated 75 slip marina, including docks and seawall.

ell, I hope all have had a wonderful Holiday and a Merry Christmas or however you celebrate. It is the New Year and I hope it will be a prosperous year for all and for the fishing also. Heads up, this is not my favorite fishing month in Southwest Florida. The big weather changes this month will no doubt affect the fish both in technique and species available for us to catch. The best advice I can give you is wear layers of clothing and down size your lure or fly or bait and slow down your retrieves. The other suggestion is to be patient, do not be too quick to move from spot to spot, work any cover or structure more deliberately and try to make repeated casts at different angles. Lake Okeechobee Bass fishing should be good and around the new and full moon some bass should want to start bedding for the year. Try targeting the larger flat areas and look for scattered peppergrass mixed with patchy hydrilla. If we have a really cold January it might put them off a little, but you should check anyhow. Go slow and keep looking down and you should be able to see the bedding areas. (Hint they will be light colored). Plastic soft baits that you can see falling into the beds usually work the best. If it is a cold month then the crappie bite should be excellent. The best way to find out what is going on is to check with a local marina from where you are going to launch. The Everglades Canals should be getting better every day this month. The only thing that might shut the fish down will be a hard cold front and a high pressure system. The lower water levels should get the bass exactly where we can catch them. Bass should rule the canals this month due to lower water temperatures. I am not saying you will not catch any cichlids, they just will not be nearly as aggressive as the bass. The best action should most likely be on small plastic worms. If it stays fairly warm and we do not have too many cold fronts then try small popper flies or tiny PopR’s and Torpedo’s. I might concentrate on the canals on 75 east of the Service Plaza. They run east and west and should afford better wind protection than the north-south canals. The Miami fishes really well this month, but it is tricky to get to. Come visit Mike and me at Mike’s Bait House and Indian Pass Outfitters on Danford Street, next to Bayview Park in Naples and we can talk fishing. We carry a full line of tackle including: fly fishing needs and both saltwater and freshwater gear, food, drink, and bait. Thanks and good fishing. Roan z

appy New Year everyone! Hope you guys are taking advantage of the cooler weather and getting some time on the water. I'm sure you're eager to test out those new fishing reels you received over the holidays, so get out there and see what's biting! As you head out to your favorite fishing spot, stop at your local bait shop and pick up a few dozen live shrimp. Many gamefish will be keyed in on big shrimp during cooler months. Rig em' up freelined if you are fishing moderate current or with a small weight if the tide is ripping. Another very effective way to rig shrimp is by tying a popping cork towards the top of the leader. The rattling cork attracts more fish as you pop it every so often. You can count on sheepshead biting throughout the inlets and along mangrove tree lines. There will be bigger sheepshead inshore WWW.PADDLENAPLES.COM as spawning season nears in February. Redfish and snook will Metal Works & Finishing Services: Residential | Commercial | Industrial be in the mix too, but may be tougher to catch. If you want a shot at landing one during the winter, you will need a big bait to grab their attention. Since the water will be in 60's these fish will be very lethargic, putting in minimal effort to hunt. Weighted baits on the bottom will be best, keeping them in the same place. Finger mullet or huge shrimp will be perfect baits for snook and reds and will also work well as cut baits. You can continue to catch these game Powdercoating • Sandblasting • Expert Color Matching • Textures • Metallics fish in the passes and throughout the bay in the winter months. Custom Fabrication: Aluminum & Steel • Marine & Automotive • Furniture Refinishing Kayaking the winter low tides will allow you to get into those tight spots that bigger boats can't squeeze into. Take advantage of the low tide bite in your yak and look for tailing fish feeding in the bay. You should be able to kayak most spots in the bay even on a negative tide. You will see things you haven't seen before and learn more about the area and great spots to fish during these low tides, WHEN YOU MENTION THIS AD. so I recommend giving it a shot. Let’s Take it Outside

F

by Misty Wells

or years now the number one question we all ask ourselves after the first of the year is “why can’t I keep my Resolutions”? After undertaking a huge study, aka: asking all my friends and family, I know the answer “because we make boring, hard and uninteresting resolutions”. This year strive to make resolutions that are fun to keep and that we look forward to. I want to encourage everyone to make the resolution of Taking it Outside and making the most of the outdoors in the great state of Florida. Nobody remembers their best day ever doing homework, working or watching TV, however, I bet you can tell me about catching your first fish or bagging your first deer. To get you started I have put together a list to jump start your outdoor adventures in Florida. The early part of the year in Florida is the time to consider two things: camping and manatees. There are so many parks and campgrounds, you won’t have any trouble finding one in your own backyard or across the state. Crystal River is the place to be when you want to get some manatees love, you can swim with them and be surrounded. When the Gulf waters start to get cold the Manatees move up the river where the temperatures stay at a warm 72° and they will spend their winter months. The Plantation on Crystal River offers some amazing off-season deals and they provide the boats, guides and wetsuits to take you on your journey with the Manatees. The Everglades Shark Valley entrance is a great place to grab your bike or rent one because they don’t allow cars past

the visitor’s center. There is a 65-foot observation towner that provides panoramic views for over 17 miles across what the Miccosukee called Kaa-ha-yat-le. If biking that far is too much but you still want a bird’s eye view of wood storks, ibis and great white herons, you can take the two-hour tram that covers 15 miles of the park. America’s only state park with horseback riding on the beach is in Amelia Island, northeast of Jacksonville. Take a ride with Kelly Seahorse Ranch along the shoreline and through the hardwood forest trails on an invigorating five-mile one-of-a-kind ride. The way to keep those resolutions is to keep it real, take it outside and keep it fun. I am inviting you to watch my video series with the Tampa Bay Times “Let’s Take it Outside” where you can watch exciting outdoor adventures and get new idea’s every week for you to “take it outside” yourself. Go to www. tampabay.com/outdoors to watch the new series. If you have a great idea and want me to film an outdoor adventure with you, contact me. Happy New Year and Let’s Take it Outside. Clean Boating- For the Fishes, for You

W

hether it’s fishing or just enjoying a day out on the water, boating regularly is an enjoyable benefit of living in Southwest Florida. However, boating also has the potential to introduce pollution directly to the environment. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) has a Clean Boater Program to promote the awareness of and practices that can keep our waterways clean. Being a clean boater is easy, just check out these tips! Protect the water for you, for the fishes, and for everyone else’s enjoyment! For more information, check out FDEP’s website at: https://floridadep.gov/fco/cva/content/cleanboater-program. • Hurricane preparedness- whether it’s docked or on a trailer there are options to minimize property and environmental damage from a hurricane; have a plan. • Proper fueling - be attentive and don’t leave the gas pump unattended when fueling to prevent a spill and consider buying technology that helps to prevent fuel spills. • Spill cleanup - keep absorbent pads on hand to use for gas/oil spills in the boat or on the water. • Boat cleaning - use non-toxic cleaners and ensure that wash water goes into the grass rather than a drain or down the boat ramp and back into the water. • Protect plants and sea life - pay attention to signage for manatee zones and protected areas and choose to walk or pole a boat out of grass beds. • Don’t litter - stow all loose items to prevent them being blown into the water and don’t throw anything overboard. • Hazardous waste disposal - call your local solid and hazardous waste group to determine how used paints, oils, and batteries can be disposed of in your area. • Fish waste management - prevent bacteria, nutrients, and low dissolved oxygen at bay or inshore marinas by dumping excess bait and gutting fish offshore or at a station with a trash and wastewater hookup. • Human waste management - use pumpout facilities and properly maintain your onboard toilet. • Support Clean Marinas - several marinas in the area have taken extra steps to gain “Clean Marina” certification to prevent pollution from their marina and they deserve support. Protect the water for you, for the fishes, and for everyone else’s enjoyment! For more information or to find the most recent list of designated Clean Marinas, check out FDEP’s website at: https://floridadep.gov/fco/ cva/content/clean-boaterprogram. 019, can you believe it? The month of December brought a few chilly cold fronts dropping our water temps into the low 70’s and officially kick starting our winter fishing patterns. If you are not an early riser, then this my friend, is your season to fish. Fish are cold-blooded and will seek to find areas to warm their engines, so sleep in and give the sun time to warm the shallow flats. Apply some science, light colors reflect light and dark absorbs light. Use this knowledge when scouting for Winter Snook. The fish will gravitate to the darker substrates, like shallow mud flats, as they tend to warm faster than sandy spots giving those in the know an exciting sight fishing opportunity. Our backwater winter species mainly consists of: snook, redfish, mangrove snapper, sheepshead, Jack’s, spotted trout, and black drum. Every one of the fish listed will aggressively take an offering of our local bait stores live shrimp, so make sure to stock up before heading out. Pro Tip: Reduce your live well water flow and place something in the well for the shrimp to cling to. This will keep your shrimp lively and diminish dead loss from exhaustion. Nothing fancy necessary, I use a large chum bag with a brick inside it. Fish the shrimp on a small circle hook with a split shot with or without a small cork. Before I drop a line, I like to start by using Boca Coast dry chum to get the fish fired up. This product has produced solid results consistently and I highly recommend it. On the artificial side of life, MirrOLure released their skins, MirrOdine, and it is developing a tremendous reputation. The Pilchard pattern is my new go to lure, which cruising snook and redfish on the flats find simply irresistible. My alternate rod is rigged with the new Skip Shad by Live Target to fish the hard to reach areas, deep under docks and mangroves. The flat profile of this soft plastic allows for it to be skipped into the thick of it, giving you a shot at those fish holding tight to cover. The pompano are here in droves for the season and will seek out a shrimp-tipped jig presented via the “Pompano Pump”. Work the sharp drops in the passes and off the beaches for your daily dose of thump. Our fish stocks took a hard hit from last years red tide event and we are urging anglers to fish for photos not food. Practicing proper fish handling techniques and releasing your catch will help our fishery recover faster. If you would like to help keep our waterways clean, check out the Tamiami Sportsman’s Coalition page on Facebook. This local group organizes cleanup events and offers a great avenue for you to do your part in protecting what is left of our diverse ecosystem. Catch you next month. STAY SALTY MY FRIENDS.

Tarpon Tango

N

by Capt. Christina

aples is home to Tarpon that was saved from some of the best poachers. tarpon fishing around. Not only do we have all sizes, but they are also found in a variety of locations, from the beaches and offshore, to the bays and winding backwaters. On a recent trip to Everglades National Park, the micro-tarpon bite was on fire. Catching them using bucktail jigs was their pick of the day. The tarpon were hitting back to back and we ended up catching six or seven micro to juvenile-sized fish. They were so active as we reeled one in, we could see another micro-tarpon following behind the one which was hooked. This time of year, the tarpon also enjoy our snook lights, while attracting lots of bugs the lights bring in some great feeding fish as well. It is almost just as fun to watch them eat as it is to catch them on hand-tied flies in the lights. It’s always a shame when they get away, but recently I took my mom out and we had one take off with the leader and bobber. When heading back in that day I was surprised to see my bobber had floated into the back of the bay, or so I thought. As I reached for the bobber the Tarpon I had hooked probably 20 minutes earlier, took off and swam away, my bobber still attached. A few months ago, in Naples Bay we hooked into a juvenile tarpon about 30lbs. and on the first flip he tangled our lines. This could have quickly become a dangerous situation, but on the second leap the tarpon jumped right into the boat. We had to work quickly to get her untangled and back to the water, she was released safely. Not all are as lucky; this next tarpon almost met her match. I hooked into a 20 pounder from the dock and as I was removing the hook, I noticed she had a large leader line (over 100lb test) hanging out of the side, but tied thru her gills. People sometimes try and keep fish alive by tying them to docks with Juvenile tarpon that jumped the intention of coming into our boat. back to get them later. This one was clearly an attempt at poaching. I was able to cut the line and get her back to hopefully see many more years, as tarpon can live to be 50+. Remember to always check state laws regarding keeping any fish, tarpon are highly protected. Hope everyone had a great New Years!

ishing this past month has been great in the backwater! Now that the weather has started to cool down a little bit, we should start to get into our winter time fishing patterns. The best bite in the back right now is snook, redfish and big jacks. Unfortunately, the sea trout were hit incredibly hard by this year’s red tide and they are nearly non-existent in Estero Bay. Snook are making their way from the beaches deeper into the backwater. Look for them around docks, oyster bars and mangrove shorelines. Redfish has also been very cooperative this past month. There are tons of smaller “rat” reds around, but we’ve been landing some big over-slot fish as well. In addition, jacks of all sizes are cruising the backwaters, including some fish over fifteen pounds! As far as bait, as always whitebait is preferred, followed by shrimp. In the backwater, I recommend using

about three feet of 25-30-pound fluorocarbon leader attached to your line with a leader-to-line knot. If you are fishing in slower moving water, a popping cork suspending the bait is the way to go. However, in faster moving water you will want to pin it to the bottom with a 1/2 ounce to 1-ounce egg sinker to keep it from drifting down current. In addition to the bigger gamefish, there have been tons of sheepshead being caught and as the water cools, we should see more and more of them. For sheepshead, use a weighted setup with a 1/0 circle hook and shrimp as your go-to bait. Again, due to this year’s red tide and the astronomical toll that it took on our fisheries, catch and release is highly recommended. January should be a great month for fishing, so catch em up! -Captain Billy

Naples Spearfishing

intertime diving in Southwest Florida presents challenges, but as with every challenge comes opportunity. We are now entering prime cobia season and stud mangrove snapper will be on almost every spot. With cobia, just find a nice wreck and be ready to pull the trigger on the descent. Cobia will offer few opportunities to pull the trigger as they come in and quickly check you out. Be ready to battle with these fish and shot placement Anthony Segrich with a 90lb black counts. I cannot tell you grouper Speared on an Offshore Naples Trip in late 2017 how many divers have had spears bounce off a cobia’s hard head. Aim for just behind the gill plate and spine for the best chance at landing one. Mangrove snapper are one

of my favorites to eat, but not always the easiest to spear. A poorly placed shot and you are not only risking losing the fish, but also damaging the meat and losing some filet. Spearfishing snapper in general is tricky, as they are some of the most ‘Houdinilike’ fish and will figure out a way to get free. Of course, the water will be a bit chilly and the weather windows shrink this time of year. Pick your days wisely and wear a 5mm suit with a hood for thermal protection Alex Uzaga with a Nice Cobia against the elements. It helps to have your spots dialed in as well, because you do not want to be checking for new spots in chilly conditions. There is a major difference diving in cold water, between diving a spot with trophy fish or one with no fish. Adrenaline plays a factor and when you see a big fish, you seem to forget about the cold, at least for the moment! Everglades Backcountry Experience

H

by Capt. Rodney Raffield

i Coastal Angler fans, Capt. Rodney back at you from here in the Everglades National Park. Fishing this past month has still been fantastic with great numbers and much nicer weather. Snook have been as good as I can remember in recent memory with some Backcountry days producing 50 fish. Lots of these fish are very small but we have been catching some slot fish which you can see by the photos. Still catching some Reds but they have slowed down a little. Trout are still not in the deep holes yet, but are catching some on the outside as well as the Islands. Hot lures continue to be soft plastics like Zman, Mr. Wiffelure, and D.O.A. My tactics will change as the weather gets colder but as of now I am employing fall techniques. I am an artificial guide and my passion is to share my love for lures with my clients and prove that not only can you produce lots of fish, but trophy fish as well. So get out there on the water my friends, that trophy fish is waiting. Till next month tight lines my friends. Capt. Rodney Raffield Capt. Rodney Raffield is a 6th generation native of the Everglades area. If you would like to experience fishing this awesome place he calls his Backyard, he can be contacted at 239-695-4626 or email captrodney@centurylink.net. Best way to see what he does on a daily basis is to follow on Facebook at Everglades Backcountry Experience.

In The Wake by Capt. JimKalvin I moved to Naples In 1965 from Miami with my family. It was a friendly place where neighbors knew their neighbors, and people respected one another regardless of what they did for a living or where they came from. Standing in line at the sporting goods store, that man in the cover-alls might have been a farm hand – or he might have owned one of the largest coatings manufacturing businesses in the country. The woman looking at produce in Sunshine Foodway could have been a teacher or a world-famous philanthropist. Naples had it all. People came here to relax. With a bustling new community, needs grew, and industries grew with the increasing demand for services. Folks then seemed to know that the supply of goods and services meant that commercial properties were not only needed, but should be encouraged and supported. Nobody then was “offended” by an industrial piece of real estate. It meant that they could get their needs met locally by people they knew. Fast forward to 2018, and I’d like to concentrate on one particular industry for now – one guess what that might be. Since the 70’s, Naples waterfront has lost the following commercial businesses: Boat Haven, which was where Naples Bay Resort is. Daniels Boatworks – which was where Tin City is. Nelson Marine / Gulf Marine – which is now a vacant slab over by the City Dock. Brookside Marina is gone. Bay Marina is largely a commercial loading site to service Keewaydin Island. Porto-Call Marina was redeveloped into condominium storage. And Hanson Marine / Great American Boatyard is now Marine Max, and they serve mainly their own retail customers. The Turner property, which formerly had a commercial fish-house and one of the largest marina facilities on the West Coast, was redeveloped into a multi-use property which currently includes Naples Boat Club condominium boat storage, residential waterfront condominiums, 2 commercial boat slips, a bunch of privately owned boat slips, Burkhard Yacht Sales, Freedom Waters Foundation, the Marine Industries Association, Coastal Marine Fuel, Naples Yacht Brokerage, Denisen Yacht Sales, Formula Yacht Sales, The Wharf Tavern, Diversified Yacht Services, and Molly’s Marine. The property serves a great number of people in many ways. The “anchor” of the property in my humble opinion, is Molly’s Marine. A full-service marina facility that utilizes the waterfront adjacent to the Boat Club, Molly’s is the only public marina on Naples Bay equipped to haul vessels up to 70 tons. With hundreds of vessels in Collier County that need these services, certainly this is a business that is beneficial to the City. But this is now and times have changed. A lawsuit has been filed against Molly’s Marine by some of the adjoining property tenants who want the boatyard to be gone. It was there when they bought their units, mind you. But now it’s a “nuisance” and they are suing to cease marina operations. Molly’s not only performs work on private client vessels servicing Port Royal, Royal Harbor, Marco Island, and Park Shore, as well as transient mariners, the facility also welcomes other tradesmen – painters, carpenters, detailers, electronics technicians, mechanics, fiberglass repair shops, other boatyards, sign makers, welders, canvas companies, and more. That small slab of commercial concrete in down-town Naples provides jobs and livelihoods for hundreds of local tradesmen and their families. But for the “new residents”, this is irrelevant. Funny how their units were likely “more affordable” (cheaper) due to the commercial aspect of the entire property. But now they’re too good to be associated with such goings’-on. Shame on them. Just because this type of action has become typical in Naples doesn’t mean it’s right. There are condominiums that exist in Naples, on the water, that do not have any commercial element whatsoever. They should have bought one of those. Naples loses a little more of the old-time charm with each passing season. It’s harder and harder to find good people to provide needed services and skilled trades. If Molly’s goes away, this will move that bar to a new height. Vessel Owners will have to travel to Ft. Myers and beyond for their haul-out work. Stop in and see Molly, and ask how you can help. The turret of the big legal gun has her, her employees, her subcontractors, and her clients in the cross-hairs. And that’s not how the Naples I grew up in took care of its’ neighbors.

Gulf Red Snapper Meetings Slated FWC photo by Allen Peirce he Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council is holding public hearings and a webinar to solicit public comments on Draft Amendment 50—State Management of Recreational Red Snapper. This amendment would, if approved, allow state management in future years and would provide flexibility to the Gulf states to set the recreational red snapper fishing season and potentially other management measures. FRESHWATER

Since 2015, Frabill has continued to set the quiet standard in bucket conversion. The Frabill Whisper Quiet Aerator system is a portable, aeration design that provides the utmost discretion when fishing with live bait. Constructed with 75 years of experience, the Whisper Drive Aeration Motor has been specifically designed and tested to keep saltwater baitfish and crustaceans healthy and active while emitting minimal sound. With a couple of batteries, the Whisper Quiet Aerator converts any size cooler or bucket into an oxygen-rich livewell. Frabill’s top-of-the-line signature yellow air stone creates enough bubbles to effectively aerate up to 15 gallons of water. As a result of its over-engineered rugged design, Frabill’s Whisper Quiet Aerator has a long shelf life. The aeration system includes premium water-resistant internal parts that help prevent corrosion and won’t let an angler down. Never be surprised by battery rot again.

Surprising Winter is the Best Planting Time

I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly

at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste

better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature. Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant.
