nglers share some very unique commonalities. One trait that seems standard across the board is that whenever we find ourselves in a new destination, regardless of why we’re there, we always want to find out about “what’s biting.” Normally a quick trip to a local tackle shop gets us up to speed. I often hear from readers that they were in a different state or a different region and found a copy of our magazine at the tackle shop they went into. One such reader recently told me, “I live in Wilmington, North Carolina, and I read your Wilmington edition every month. I was in Mississippi recently on business and I saw a copy of your magazine at a local tackle shop. The next month I was in Key West, Florida and saw a copy of the magazine at a tackle shop there. I just landed in Connecticut today and can’t believe that I just picked up another copy of your magazine at a tackle shop here in Connecticut. You guys are everywhere.” It is true; we are available for free in over 30 market areas, but we’re not everywhere yet. he 11th Annual Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo, an action-packed water sports expo for watersport enthusiasts of all ages, returns to the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center April 14-15. Produced by Sheri Daye, a world-record spearfishing diver, the Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo is South Florida’s premier water sports expo. A
pparently there are more dangerous critters than gators to worry about when paddling Florida’s rivers. Last month, reports of a rampaging river otter emerged out of Manatee County, and the culprit appeared to have been targeting kayakers. According to the Bradenton Herald, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed multiple reports of aggressive otter encounters over two days on a stretch of the Braden River in Manatee County. The first was received Saturday, March 3, when two kayakers reported being bitten by an otter. The next day, Sunday March 4, two more kayakers reported being attacked by an otter. The second day’s encounters occurred about 2 miles from the previous attack. One of the victims, Sue Spector, 77, was interviewed by Fox 13 News after receiving stitches and rabies treatments as a result of the attack. “… I heard someone make a comment that, ‘Oh, there’s an otter!” Spector told Fox 13. “And then all of a sudden he jumped on my kayak and two seconds later he jumped on me.” According to the report, the animal clawed, scratched and bit Spector’s arms, nose and ear. Her kayak flipped and a lifejacket and hat saved Spector from sustaining additional injury as her husband and other kayakers in the group fended the otter off with paddles. FWC posted warning fliers at nearby boat ramps, but the terror might have already ended, as there are reports the otter might also have had a run-in with an alligator.

A
s winter gives way to spring, anglers from all over begin to experience one of the best times of the year to get out fishing. Many of the easiest and unsuspected places to fish can be right out your front door, leading kids of all levels to connect with a wide variety of fish. There is likely good, fishable water within walking or biking distance of where you live. Many golf course ponds and retention ponds produce big bass and good numbers of fish in the 3- to 4-pound range. While most ponds will hold fish, the most productive ones will have structure to protect fish from predators as well as give shade during the day. Overhanging trees, grass and bushes are all things to look for. One of my favorite ways to catch these bass is by hooking a plastic worm through the middle of its body (wacky worm) and letting it flutter weightless to the bottom near the structure. An occasional gentle twitch will attract attention, and bent rods will be sure to follow. Surf fishing, another favorite of mine, is a fun and easy way to catch dinner while enjoying a beautiful view. Fish travel all along the surf in search of a meal, but if you can concentrate your efforts where the bait is congregating, you will greatly improve your odds of hooking up. Birds diving into the surf is a sure sign that bait is in the area. Find diving birds, and you’ve found a great place to set up. Advanced techniques and high-end gear aren’t mandatory for novice anglers to put some good eating fish on the table. A 10-foot rod, a reel sized similar to a 6500 Penn Spinfisher (spooled with 20lb. mono) and a sand spike will be your basic set up. As far as tackle goes, I use a pompano rig or fish finder rig above a sputnik weight, all of which can be found at almost any tackle shop. For bait, shrimp and clams are good all-around choices. When I use
clams, I generally place them in kosher salt beforehand to toughen them up. Whiting, black drum, the occasional redfish and the ever-tasty pompano are some of the fish you can expect to catch this time of year. To be better prepared for your next fishing adventure, I highly encourage you to tap into the wealth and resources found on the Web. Surf fishing Florida (www. surfishingflorida.com) and other local forums are great ways to find where the fish are running. A search on YouTube will further address some of the things I’ve talked about, and with a visual aspect, you will be well on your way to enjoying the great outdoors. hether it’s a canoe, kayak or paddleboard, fishing from a paddle-powered craft requires the angler to expend energy getting to the fish. That’s part of the fun. Once there, maintaining control of the vessel while casting, retrieving and hopefully fighting fish can become a chore. Without an electric trolling motor, the best way to efficiently fish an area is to utilize the wind and currents. Drift fishing lets the angler fish more and paddle less, while still covering water to find biting fish. A little planning goes a long way. On a river, it’s obvious which way you’ll be headed when you drop a boat in the water. The same should be true on most waters, whether it’s a reservoir or a big saltwater bay. Know ahead of time which way the tide and currents run and which direction the wind is blowing, and a little map work should help identify separate put-in and take-out points. Satellite imagery can provide an idea of where fish might be, even on new waters. You’ll be able to cover more water and fish longer and harder because there’s no need to paddle back at the end of the trip. If you’re fishing with a buddy—which you should be for safety’s sake—shuttle a vehicle to the take-out. If you know someone reliable, schedule a pick-up. Either way, time spent researching and executing the plan will be worth it when there’s not a long paddle looming at the end of the day.

acksonville, FL, Feb. 22, 2018 – JBM & Associates is pleased to announce the Jacksonville In-Water Boat Show will be coming to Metropolitan Park and Marina on April 13 through April 15. The event will be filled with plenty of activities for the entire family, including fishing seminars for adults and kids, the Fetch-N-Fish Show, Captain Jack Sparrow and his merry band of pirates, plus boats of all sizes, marine products and services.
“We are very excited to bring our brand of boat show to Jacksonville and are thrilled to have the support of so many boat dealers, manufactures and marine related vendors. The show will be fantastic,” said Jacqui Bomar, president of JBM & Associates. “We are a group of females who have been producing boat shows around the country for more than 17 years. We like to focus on creating a show that the whole family can enjoy. We will have Captain Don from Hook the Future there to teach kids how to fish like grown-ups and we are lining up some great captains for our adult fishing seminars. Plus, Captain Jack Sparrow will be joined by noted female pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read, and of course, lots of boats for those looking for their first boat or looking to upgrade.” Highlights of the weekend will include the Fetch and Fish, which is 2 NE FLORIDA

both a fishing show and a dog show. It features a 4,000-gallon mobile aquarium that is 41 feet long. It is an interactive family program that incorporates fishing techniques and dog tricks. The host brings the audience into the show as he talks fishing and the dogs show off their fetching skills, both on the ground and in the tank. The weekend show will also feature free boat rides aboard the Freedom Boat Hut. It is a floating tiki bar with thatched roof and one of only 10 boats like it in the U.S. There will be food trucks including Treemendous BBQ, What’s The Catch, Mother Trucking Pizza, Wurstbusters and Tikiz Shaved Ice, Ice Cream and Gourmet Sorbets and music from a number of acts including Big Jeff The Entertainer. The Jacksonville Boat Show opens Friday, April 13 from noon until 6 p.m., Saturday, April 14 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, April 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets range from $5 to $10 and can be purchased at jacksonvilleinwaterboatshow.com. arch was a whirlwind of fishing and fun over at the Jacksonville Offshore Sport Fishing Club! Our annual El Cheapo Sheepshead Tournament was one for the books! Despite some rough windy weather our members and local anglers put in their best efforts and brought in some extremely nice fish for the weigh in scale. Fishing Report & Forecast Nassau Sound By Capt. Tony Bozzella
T
his is a great month to bag a big Trout. Many of the largest fish of the year will come at this time. Some of the biggest trout have been as big as 11lbs for my clients over the years. Whether your a float fisherman, plug, topwater or jig, big trout will be on the prowl looking for a meal. They can be caught with any of these methods. Fish get very active with the warming waters and comfortable water temps. Bait will be return to North Florida, and as it does it will keep the fish active!! Fishing places that have current, ledges, structure and bait will be an ideal place Capt Tony Bozzella with to start your search. Places like these hold a overslept Redfish in fish!! There can be a nice mix of bluefish Clapboard Creek area in the area. Very fun, and lots of action however, I take advantage of what mother nature has to offer? Years past, Anglers have taken blues well over 8 lbs!! Any angler would of loved it!! Redfish, Jack Crevalles, Spanish mackerel, Ladyfish, will be in the mix, especially if the water temps stay up. I have seen these fish in years past show up as early as March and as late as May. April is a good time frame. Plugs and lures that have been productive include, Rapalas, x raps, twichin raps, and skitterwalks. In the Miro-lures line, mirro dynes 52M’s and top dogs, BiteABait 6 NE FLORIDA

line, fighters and top walkers, as well as High Rollers are all excellent choices for a trophy trout. Fish what you know how to work. Colors are simple, if the water is clean and clear, I like to use natural colors. If the water is dirty or stained, use a white or chartreuse. Fishing towards dusk, use a dark colors so the bait will be silhouetted as the fish look up at it. Keep it simple. The same go’s for jigs. Just use enough weight to get down and stay in tune with the bait .These are all fine baits in the hands of an angler that has mastered how to work them? Learn to be good with the bait you choose to use. Many anglers put hope in a “magic or special lure” It’s best to master a couple of good time proven lures and cover water knowing you are fishing it correctly. The backcountry is your style, there will be some redfish prowling around. Schools will be smaller and start breaking up with the warmer water. This will be the very last of the clear water and sight fishing this month. As the bait returns to the backcountry, the water will get cloudy and muddy as all the mullet and microorganism start to replenish and bait will get active and “turn up” the water on the mud flats. Flounder will start showing up more as time go’s on. Any structure with bait and moving water can be a hot spot. I like the incoming tide. Fish a TBS jig in a bright color combined with a finger mullet or mud minnow. Fish slow and feel the thump (bite) and reel the slack out and set the hook. Perseverance Pays Off By Tim Stouder & Katie Blunk
I
n all of our 7 years with the Northeast Florida HOW Chapter, our first event cancellation was in 2017 and scheduled to have been at Guana Preserve. It just so happened that was the time a hurricane came through our area. Not to be deterred and scared of the weather possibilities, we scheduled Guana again early this year. Well, the planning has paid off as the weather was absolutely beautiful this past Sunday, March 11, 2018. For Veterans, family members, and our fantastic volunteers, March’s event did not disappoint. All week the calls and emails were coming in as the weather was predicted to be horrible. With a predicted 25+ MPH winds and scattered thunderstorms, we still had a full crowd of guests and guides signed up for our event. On the Friday before the event, the weather did a 180 degree turn and let loose with some of the best forecasts we have seen this year. We launched close to 60 kayaks into the lake, which included 5 new veterans and 4 guides from the new Cumberland Heroes on the Water Chapter from Georgia there learning the ropes. Now Northeast Florida and South GA will have two HOW chapters to service veterans and first responders. NEFL HOW will be assisting the Cumberland Chapter with training and learning our routines so that they can grow as a chapter. After 7 years, our Chapter runs like a well-oiled machine each event. So on to the great day we had at Guana. Many fish were caught throughout the lake, just no giants on this particular day. Many of the trout that were caught were dinks with a few really nice slots mixed in. The reds were chewing, just no real size to them. A few slots were mixed into the rats that were caught as well. The wind was perfect blowing out of the northeast and was less than 10mph which was a real lifesaver with keeping the no see’ems out of everyone’s face. As with
every event, the smiles were in abundance. April’s event will be in the black hammock area off of Hecksher drive and that date is currently TBD. We finally have a date for our overnight camping trip at Sebastian Inlet State Park. We will be camping the weekend from May 4th-6th. Once again, we will be teaming up with the Operation Outdoor Freedom, an amazing group from the National Forestry Service. This event will book complete within a day or so, so keep your eye out for it’s posting. It’s a very popular event with the spots limited since there is travel and all meals entailed. As always, tight lines and stay safe. About Heroes on the Water Heroes on The Water is a non-profit organization that helps injured service members with their physical and mental recovery using the therapeutic qualities of fishing from kayaks. Every HOW event across the country brings together wounded military personnel for guided kayak fishing excursions. Founded in 2007, HOW has served more than 32,774 wounded Veterans. Northeast Florida Marlin Association
Past, Present and Future... 2018 Bluewater: April 27-29 By Paul Raudenbus
C
onsider the brave fools who ventured into the deep blue waters of the Gulf Stream in Northeast Florida in the early 1970’s in their slow, stinky diesel powered boats with a compass, VHF radio and a bucket of local netted mullet for baits. The paper charts only suggested where the continental shelf began, depth finders and loran beacons were little help and you checked the water temperature with your hands. Who knows if it was the stories written by Hemmingway or the reports of Marin and Sailfish from the Bahamas and South Florida that inspired these men to seek the elusive Billfish in Northeast Florida or just a natural sense of adventure that pulled these men to the sea, but a few strong minded men did go fishing and they did find those trophy billfish and the Northeast Florida Marlin Association was born. By 1980’s the association had grown from the original fifteen member to sixty and by the early 1990’s they had to limit their membership to the first one hundred owners/captains and waiting lists were formed for new and associate members. The fishing was great in the 1980’s and ‘90’s and trophy catches did hit the docks including the standing record Yellowfin Tuna at 208 pounds by John Powers in 1997 and the 640 lbs Blue Marlin captured by Harry Graves. The secret back then was sharing the valuable knowledge they gained on each and every trip and learning from the successes and failures. So the club became more than a sporting club, it became a family club where monthly meetings were “pot-luck” dinners and dock parties brought crowds to the docks where some beautiful and amazing new fishing vessels began to appear. The Marlin Association will host its 46th annual Bluewater Tournament this April 27-29 and most of the “Old Salts” don’t fish as much as they used to, so a new generation of brave fools will venture into the deep in amazing, super-fast, high-powered center console boats with radars, satellites and more electronics than the NASA spacecraft of those days. Now our Captains have video charts that provide precise color mapping of the ledge, sea surface temperature images created by 12 NE FLORIDA

satellites and beautiful shiny baits flown in from Miami. Plus we have social media to help us share our catches in short videos and our fishing stories in tweets and posts. And the fishing is still great and the Northeast Florida Marlin Association is still more than just a sporting club. The secret today is still sharing the valuable information that the members gain on each and every trip and it’s learning which tactics and tackle is working and it’s having a place where families can share the experiences and the stories in real life. Dock parties are different these days because trailered boats don’t offer the same comforts as the old Sport Fishers, so the Marlin Club is hosting seminars in its St Augustine Clubhouse, from local experts, gear manufacturers and legends of the sport. The tournaments are customized to allow special opportunities for juniors, ladies and special species and they are schedule about once a month as the active species change off of the First Coast. This year’s new tournament format will offer more opportunities than ever to compete for cash, trophies and bragging rights. The dock parties now are catered events with live music, raffles and prizes. The Marlin association has lost some of its legendary captains of the past but the captains and the crews of today are building their own legendary experiences for the future. Fishing Report & Forecast Mayport By Capt. Kirk Waltz
T
he month of April might be our quick start to the upcoming spring fishing season for us. February held some great promise of an early spring with at least 2 dozen days nearing 80 if not over that temperature. That window created some awesome days of red and trout bites though it didn’t sit with this author as I would rather it doesn’t get scorching too early. Look for some banner days in April for reds, trout, drum, and sheepshead. The bite in March has been good and I do see that trend continuing. The big rocks at Mayport should hold some good numbers of black drum this month upwards to 100lbs. The most effective method is to soak a ¼ to a ½ of a fresh blue crab on the bottom. Try working the bottom of the dead low and the top of the flood high at the tips of both rock piles for the better results. I like to use a Penn Slammer II spooled with 60lb SpiderWire Ultra Cast braided line on a UglyStik 7ft Tiger rod. I rig a 3-way swivel using about 60lb mono or better coupled with a no#6 Wide bend live bait hook. The 3-way is simplistic in design and allows you to change the weight according to your needs relative to the current flow. I typically look towards soaking the baits in 30 to 45ft of water on the very ends of the rocks and will methodically move in or out of the river depending on water flow. The big fish, I believe, should be released as they really are of fairly poor food value once they exceed 25lbs. It’s important to also be reminded that these big fish are our breeding stock and to throw the breeders back unharmed will continue to guarantee a more healthy population for years to come. Also look for the redfish, sheepshead, ringtails and trout to move onto the rocks in good numbers next month. Anglers throwing anything from jig/shrimp combo’s, to float rigs, or simply soaking a fiddler/blue crab bait near the bottom or edge of the rocks will produce some healthy stringers of fish. My all time favorite thing to do this month is to work
the tips of the rocks on a high outgoing tide for ring tail porgies. These testy little fighters are great on light tackle and actually eat quite well. Try throwing a light ¼ to 1/8 oz jig with a real small shrimp towards the ends of the rocks. If they are piled in on the spot you will feel them striking the bait before it hits the bottom. I try to load or bend the rod ever so slowing with a slight lift till I feel a fairly solid bump then set the hook. Great fighters on light tackle. This month is also an excellent month to catch good sized trout on lures on the big rocks. In year past some of my biggest speckled trout came off the stones at Mayport throwing a Mirror Lure 52M. It’s usually a high outgoing tide or top of the incoming tide fishery but can be quite fun if they are around. Try working the rocks early in the Morning and late in the afternoon for the best results. I like to get on the trolling motor covering as much ground as possible by fan casting the rocks right to the edges. The offshore bite should pick up this month with our seabass moving in closer this month. Try fishing the local party ground natural bottom spots for the best results using cuttlefish. Snapper, triggers, and even some cobia should begin to show so make sure you have a rod ready. One last thing I will to this report is make sure you check the areas beaches before heading offshore. If the water warms enough schools of pogies might show early and with it cobia, Spanish mackeral,bull reds, and some big jacks. Capt. A
ncient City Game Fish Association will meet on Tuesday, April 17th at the St. Augustine Shrine Club, located at 250 Brainard Dr in St Augustine south on Moultrie Creek. Social begins at 6 o’clock,followed by light food and the general meeting. The junior anglers club will meet and have an art activity along with their meeting. There will be awards for the Drum tournament as well as monthly angler prizes. There’s a rumor going around that one of our famous captains will be presented a “blooper award” for his recent misadventures while fishing. All this followed by a great raffle. The Ancient City Game Fish Association is a not for profit, family, fun fishing club. Guest and visitors are always welcome. This month the Ancient City Game Fish Association will be working with our two favorite groups. The St Augustine High School football team is sponsoring a fundraiser fishing tournament. The inshore tournament will be held at the Conch House Marina on April 28th. Our club members will

Fishing Report & Forecast St. Augustine Inshore By Capt. Tommy Derringer
I
t’s my absolute favorite time of the year to fish in Northeast Florida… Spring weather will bring in the baitfish (mullet, pogies, etc.) and just about every predatory fish will be on the hunt for a good meal. Redfish will still be up on the flats in schools, trout will be feeding along the ICW banks, and the drum and flounder will be stacked in the deeper creek holes. Just about everywhere you go you’re going to run into some good fishing over the next couple of months. Redfish will remain schooled up as long as the water temps stay on the cooler side. Look for the big schools of reds on the lower tide stages (especially on the negative low tides we get with a good west wind). I like to find flats that have somewhat of a deeper escape route for the fish. A perfect setup would be a large flat on the edge of the ICW that has a deeper area that drains into the ICW. The fish will absolutely stack up in those “drains” as the tide gets really low. If live bait is your thing, a mud minnow or live shrimp pegged to a 1/4oz Slayer Inc. jighead will be the perfect presentation to the schooled up redfish. If you’re going with artificials, I like to use a Slayer Inc. SST paddle tail on the same jig. Locate the schools by looking for large wakes and/or “muds” that the fish will cause by moving around. Make sure to lead the fish by quite a bit as they can and will be a little spooky this time of year. You can also find some big schools of redfish stacked in the creek holes on the same low tides. Push back as far as possible in the creeks and find that last deep spot… you’re sure to find a few good fish hanging out waiting for the tide to turn. Redfish won’t get all the glory this time of year, it’s also troutski time!... Trout will be really turning on with the warming air and water temps. Some of my biggest trout are caught this time of year. Toss your favorite top-water plug at first and last light along the ICW shell banks for some 20 NE FLORIDA

great big trout action. Once the sun comes up a bit switch to a subsurface plug or your favorite soft plastic on a jighead. The soft plastic and jighead rig account for a good number of trout catches on my boat this time of year. I like to use the twitch, twitch, pause retrieval method. The fish usually take the lure on the pause. Target creek mouths on the outgoing tide and the ICW shell banks on the incoming. Any kind of rocks, docks, or structure with moving water around them will also be holding some nice trout. And of course the live shrimp under a popping cork sometimes can’t be beat. April is a great time of the year for black drum in our area. The monster drum (sometimes up to 80lbs+) were going pretty strong last month and there still should be a few around. They can be targeted in the deepest areas of the ICW and in all the area inlets. A halved blue crab on the bottom is the bait of choice for these big dogs. The big ones will be spawning so make sure to thoroughly revive them to ensure a healthy release so they can take care of their business and keep the drum population thriving. The ones I like to target, smaller “slot” sized black drum in the 5-10lb range, can be found schooled up in the creek holes and near deeper water structure such as bridges and jetties. F
irst light, outgoing tide and add schools of mullet, this formula makes for a successful morning outing for trout. Tie on your favorite topwater plug and get to casting, gator trout will be lurking around the bait pods along the ICW.. Working topwater and sinking plugs parallel to dropoffs and around creek mouths will guarantee success! Don’t over look deeper creek holes as “Gator Trout” can be taking residence. Redfish will also be patrolling the shell banks of the ICW working the bait pods during low tides. Shallow flats that are holding mullet will have redfish shadowing mullet pods looking to eat all the shrimp and crabs the mullet kick up. A Fish Bites Extreme watermelon
red flake color jerkbait on a Slayer 4/0 Penetrator 3/16oz. hook is great search bait for flats fishing. Oyster bed hopping and casting to spartina grass edges will also produce strikes as long as the mullet are around. If redfish are busting mullet switch to mullet imitators like my new favorite lure the Sebile stick shad in hollow mullet. Live bait fisherman should soak live mullet or shrimp around oyster bars on high tide using Daiichi 1/0-3/0 circle hooks. Flounder should be chewing steady in the flats, creeks and inlet on outgoing tide being my favorite. Live finger mullet on jighead or using a soft plastic paddle tail and a jighead slowly bounced across the bottom will produce flatties. Jig fisherman will target deeper dropoffs with mud minnows or finger mullet. Doormats around the inlets will fall for 5-7 inch mullet on a fish finder rig. I prefer to use Daiichi D18Z J-hooks as I miss a lot of flounder on circle hooks. Big Blue fish should continue to chew around Matanzas Inlet, they will bite just about any lure that resembles a mullet, first light is best for numbers. Ladyfish will be stacking up outgoing tides busting baitfish in the bigger creeks that will keep the kids occupied. Light jigs and paddle tails or live shrimp will get slammed by lady fish on every cast once you find them.. Capt. Tricks for Tricky Toms By Bob McNally
T
urkey hunting season is in full swing in Florida and Georgia, and gunners are having daily encounters with big birds that do everything right, except they hold off coming within shotgun range. They’ll strut and gobble, react to almost every yelp or cut, cackle or purr call that’s sent their way. But they won’t close the deal. They stay just just far enough away that they can’t be collected with a shotgun. They are, in turkey hunting parlance, “hung up.” It can drive a sober sportsman to strong drink. But there are things that can be done to turn the tables on such a frustrating gobbler. Double-teaming toms is one of the best and easiest ways to lure hung-up birds into finally eating a face full of copper-coated 6s. The man out front never calls, and he’s most likely to get the shot. But the “call man” who is farthest away from the hung-up bird had best be on his toes, too, because such toms are cagey, and have been known to circle a caller, coming in quietly and carefully to the man doing the yelping. The “end-around” move is another standard tactic to unhinge a hung-up gobbler. It’s never a sure thing, and can be risky because you might spook the tom or others nearby, which blows the whole deal. But if you make your move slowly, carefully, quietly, and use terrain features to best advantage, it’s often possible to successfully get around a gobbler. Often all you’re doing is crossing a ditch, fence, or working around a dense thicket or pond that a bird refuses to cross to your call. But the tom may have hens with him, or is just too smart to come to your first location. When you set up a second time, try using a different call, even if you just change the type mouth call. If you used a slate call, try a different style like an aluminum friction call or perhaps a box call. You’re trying to mimic a different hen coming to the tom from a different direction, which hopefully unhinges his location anchor, and he’ll come running. I know some great turkey hunters who have duped dandy birds that wouldn’t close the final 50 yards to their guns until they started superaggressive calling. Loud and incessant cuts and yelps, or even going
into the now-classic fighting purr scenario has worked for plenty of people, especially ace turkey hunter David Hale. I’m not half the caller David is, so I’ve had better results by acting coy with an uncooperative turkey. Instead of turning up the volume I turn it down, and call less frequently. Long periods of silence works
well, and if you can pull it off, moving slowly away can be the final nail in a gobbler’s coffin. Move a few yards at a time. Stop, yelp sloftly or purr, and watch for the tom. It works best with two hunters. One stays at a location, the second hunter slipping away quietly and calling occasionally. The most memorable time I ever had the slip-away ploy work on a stubborn bird was one spring in Alabama with Eddie Salter, the famed world calling champion. We located a late-morning field bird, crept into position, and for two hours Eddie played his calls like Clapton picking a guitar. The solo bird got close, but wouldn’t come within range. Finally, Eddie motioned he was gonna leave, and he crawled away quietly.

About 50 yards farther out he softly yelped, the tom gobbled, but wouldn’t follow. Eddie moved another 50 yards away, and called again. The tom started to follow, and acted like he’d strut within my shotgun range, but he turned and stayed well out in the field. Eddie again moved off, and 150 yards behind me, he went into a yelping, cutting, clucking repertoire that to this day I don’t pretend to understand. The tom double gobbled, strutted across the field, stopped, gobbled again, and walked quickly into the woods and my full-choke Ithaca Model 37. Another time in Texas for so-called “easy” Rio Grande’s, champion caller Preston Pittman and I ran into a smart tom that hung up as badly as a 4-year old Eastern bird in hard-hunted Pennsylvania. Preston decided we should re-locate our calling position on the bird, so we withdrew, circled to the east. We set up again, called, the bird answered but wouldn’t come in. We move again, to the east. Set-up, called, nothing. Again we moved, still the bird stayed put. Finally, nearly two hours later, we moved yet again, setting up unknowingly only a few yards from our original calling position. Preston used his voice instead of a manufactured call, and within 10 minutes the tom was down. Why that bird didn’t work close sooner, and come to other calls, I’ll never know. I do know that repositioning is effective in unhinging birds, especially if you can get above a tom. I had that work twice in two days one spring in hunting with legendary hunter and video producer Mark Drury. Each day we located toms at dawn, but the birds wouldn’t work close until we circled wide and well above them in the rolling country. My hunting pal and top turkey tagger Ernie Calandrelli with Quaker Boy Game Calls is convinced that using decoys, especially motion models, is the best way to dupe a hung-up bird that refuses to come to shotgun range. If he can, Ernie slips out and well around a tough bird, then sets a new ambush site so several decoys are well exposed from
his shooting position. No, it doesn’t always work. But Ernie eats plenty of turkey breasts from birds that fall to the tactic every spring. Bottom line is that when a turkey doesn’t close that last 50 yards, and you’ve given the tom plenty of time to work close, do something different. Change it up, the calling, the set-up, move away, move around and reposition. Make a move, and take charge of the situation. Often, you’ve got nothing to lose

Spring is Here Some people mark the arrival of spring by Azealia’s or Orange Blossoms, but if you’re an offshore fisherman nothing marks the arrival of spring like Mahi or as they are commonly called Dolphin. There is no disputing they are the number one fish of choice for blue water anglers. Not only do they provide spectacular bites they are tasty as well. When, where and how are the commonly asked questions. When is normally April. It varies from early to mid-April form year to year but you they will show up in force sometime this month. Where is a little trickier? As a rule early means deep. . I normally look for current edges or temperature breaks beyond the shelf edge

It is no secret that one usually means more, so don’t be in a hurry to clear all your lines when you hook the first fish. Teasers are important as well. Anything that gets the attention of a hungry Mahi will work. The old tried and true daisy chain of squid works great. Make sure you have a bait positioned behind the teaser that you can crank up to the fish when you take away the fake food. There is nothing better than a hungry Mahi blowing up on the teaser and crashing the bait. Remember Elephants eat peanuts so don’t be surprised when a Blue Marlin comes into your spread and inhales a medium ballyhoo that you had out for a Mahi. W
ell, let’s start right off with mullet. These silver fish are here and want you to catch them. All you need is bait, chum, patience and a little luck and away you got! The mullet wall is just starting to get going. So have patience. It will pick up with the heat that’s coming. Don’t forget those floats, number 2 or 4 hooks and split shot. Then you can get it going. Next will be the bream. They should be bedding this month. Shell cracker on the shell bars and the bream in the coves are on the hard bottom flats. You can either see the beds of if there’s enough of them, you can smell them. Baits of choice, wigglers and grunt worms, red worms, crickets, beetle spins. Equipment wise, smallest weight you can use, slack line on the bottom. Or suspend under a float near the beds. You may want to check out any pilings or remnants of docks. Pitch that bug around them and hold on! Crappie or Speckled Perch have been in large numbers at the south end of Crescent Lake. Near Crescent City. Anglers have been catching limit catches of some fish over 2 lbs thats right 2lbs.
Not sure how long they will bite but the whole month of march has been excellent for these great eating fish. Live minnows and small jigs are doing most of the catching. Next up, catfish. These whiskered beauties will be active thinking about feeding up to their spawn. They really like night crawlers, second choice is a shiner. Fish on the bottom and near or in creeks and near the back of coves. So grab the bait and go! Red fish will increase activity as the bait starts to show up more and more. Catch them on shiners, bass lures, bait shrimp. They like to hunt in or near grass lines. They’ll also enjoy crab baits. Just get it and go. Bass fishing will be very active post spawn, pre spawn and spawn. All these stages occur this month. Due to the abnormal warm weather, we’ve had a spawn for some of the bass. So look for these to be around the bars and waiting for bait to come past. So they can eat and start gaining strength. The pre spawner will be very active. Finding the ideal bedding spot. Eat what they can getting the female to that area and have those eggs layed. Once layed, the male guards the nest while the female goes off to rest and eat. So what you’ll need is shiners, top water baits, swim baits, frogs and crank bait. I
ts go time! Finally our water is spring time warm. With this warming the Pompano have returned in big schools! From Flagler to Fernandina it is the best time of year to score some delicious Pompano. The two best baits to use are Sand Fleas, aka Mole Crabs, and clams. The fresher the better when it comes to bait. You’ll need to catch you own fleas on high impact beaches like South Ponte Vedra or Hammock/ Flagler area. I have my best luck at high tide finding them on those red coquina beaches. Now let us cover the best rig to fish those productive baits. A Pompano rig is also called a double dropper rig. They utilize two hooks that are usually circle hooks. Circle hooks are most productive because they set themselves while the rod is still in the sand spike. Kahle hooks are also good but I have had much better success with the Eagle Claw 197L 2/0

circle hook. I would suggest buying these rigs from your favorite tackle store, mine is the Strike Zone, or tying them yourself using 30 pound monofilament leader material. Fluorocarbon is not necessary because our surf is very rarely clear enough to make a difference in your success. When you cast to the right spot, you want it to stay there. The sputnik style sinker works best for this. Not only do the wires hold it in place but the sinker is very aerodynamic. However the pyramid sinker is not. This makes it tumble through the air. This tumbling action greatly reduces the distance of your cast. Do you cast the bait as far as you can? No you do not. The most fishy spot is just inside the sandbar. This is the deepest part of the slough. My favorite targets are Redfish, Black Drum, Whiting, and Pompano and they actively feed there because food is washed off the bar into the slough. Sloughs are not all the same. When you get to the beach, look north and south to find the deepest slough within sight. That one tip will increase your catch. ummer is just around the corner, and south Florida families will be spending more time on the water. From the bathtub to the open ocean, kids need to feel comfortable and confident about their in-water skills. One of the most important lessons to remember is to use the buddy system. It’s one of the first things we teach young snorkelers during Pura Vida Divers’ Snorkel Summer Camp sessions. Campers know to stay within arm’s reach of their in-water buddy. When duck-diving under the surface, they practice one up, one down. This ensures someone is always alert and paying attention to their swimming partner. At the beach, or when exploring snorkeling spots like the Blue Heron Bridge, show young swimmers where lifeguard stands are located, and point out swim zones that lifeguards patrol. Flags on the beach alert swimmers of the day’s conditions. It’s important that children understand what these flags mean and how conditions affect their experience in the water.
Another important consideration for in-water activities is identification of potentially harmful wildlife. During Pura Vida Divers’ Snorkel Camp, campers are taught to identify many local species. They know how to spot a camouflaged scorpionfish, and which jellyfish to avoid. The knowledge is essential for a great experience in the water, and it also introduces children to a whole new world of animals. Many kids get caught up in the excitement of seeing fish, rays, octopus and other interesting animals. The more confident they feel in their swimming skills, the more they can fully engage in enjoying their adventure. The camp staff has found that the easiest way to introduce kids to snorkeling is to introduce one item at a time. It’s important to choose comfortable-fitting gear, rather than just grabbing a snorkel package off the shelf. ith a new U.S. Customs facility at Witham Field in Stuart, Fla., those travelling from the islands of the Bahamas will have a convenient place to clear customs in Martin County. The Martin County Board of County Commissioners announced a late spring opening of the U.S. Customs Facility at Witham Field, which will process international travelers arriving in Martin County via aircraft and marine vessels, allowing boaters, pilots, residents and visitors to clear Customs without having to travel to Fort Pierce or West Palm Beach. This project is the first intermodal clearance facility of its kind built in Florida. This facility has been welcomed by the marine community not only in Martin County but throughout the State of Florida. With Stuart’s location on the east end of the Cross-Florida Canal/Okeechobee Waterway, boaters returning from the Bahamas will be able to conveniently clear back into the U.S. and continue on their way to Florida’s west coast and the Gulf of Mexico or continue to points north via the Intracoastal Waterway. The Witham Field location is conveniently located within a 10-minute drive of 90 percent of the marinas in Martin County. This facility will greatly enhance Martin County’s tourism efforts, specifically in the recreational boating sector and related marine industries. When complete, the facility will consist of a 3,210-squarefoot concrete block structure with road access for marine trailers, parking lot and a customer-friendly environment. Funding for the project is provided through an 80/20 grant partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation Aviation (Multimodal) Division and the Airport Enterprise Fund. The facility will be operated by U.S. Customs and Boarder Protection. As it is with Witham Field, user fees will cover the cost of operations expenses. staple in everyone’s tackle box. There is one lure, though, that doesn’t get the attention it deserves on the tournament scene these days. With all the fancy square-bill crankbaits and bladed jigs, it’s easy to forget about the tried-and-true spinnerbait. Few baits are as good at covering water as the spinnerbait, and this time of the year that is half the battle. Early in the spring, warm days will cause water temperatures to rise. Bass move shallower to look for places to spawn. Water conditions also play a big role in this. More fish move up earlier in dirty water, which warms faster than clear water. When these fish move shallow, they like to get next to a stump, laydown, dock, rock, really anything that holds heat and gives them a place they feel safe. The spinnerbait is my favorite bait for targeting prespawn fish for two reasons. Reason No. 1 is they are virtually weedless. I can throw spinnerbaits in pretty thick cover, and as long as I’m careful it will come right through. It comes through wood especially well. Reason No. 2 is the unlimited options. If I’m faced
natural skirt color. Having all those options is important with the everchanging conditions of spring. When you’re actively searching for fish, keep an open mind. I’ve caught them anywhere from bluff banks to shallow flat pockets and everywhere in between this time of year, so let the fish tell you where you need to be and what you should be throwing. My favorite spinnerbait rod is a 7’2” medium heavy (EPS86MHF) MHX Elite Pro Series rod that I build. It is a great all-purpose blank. It has plenty of tip, so I can make precise casts to targets, and it also has plenty of backbone. I use a 7:3:1 bait-casting reel spooled with 17-lb. Vicious ProElite fluorocarbon. If I could only choose one spinnerbait for the rest of my career, it would be a ½-ounce tandem willowleaf/Colorado combo with one silver and one gold blade and a chartreuse and white skirt. My favorite is made by a new company called Kinkee Baits. It has a combination of wrapped wire down to 18/1000-inch wire, which creates vibration bass have never felt before.

ob and Shelly Stowe, of Jupiter, knew plenty about freshwater fishing from their years living in Michigan, but when it came to saltwater fishing, they weren’t quite sure where to start. That’s when they found out about a local Family Saltwater Fishing Clinic being hosted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). “We had no experience with saltwater fishing,” said Shelly. “That class was so complete. It was A++. I learned how to set up a pole, how to unhook a fish from the line, how to cast correctly and how to bait a hook. Every single person involved in teaching that class was so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable that if they had it again, we’d take it again.” For years FWC has hosted kids’ and women’s fishing clinics. In 2017 they added adult saltwater fishing clinics. These free, one-day educational events are for anyone 18 and older, male or female. Participants learn everything they need to know to fish on their own, from knot tying and fishing tackle to conservation efforts and marine habitats. Clinic class sizes are kept small for a hands-on approach. At the end of the day, you’ll also get to try catch-and-release fishing firsthand. Bring your own gear or FWC will provide some for the day. ne particular type of architecture that Florida fishermen know is the fishing shack, usually a ramshackle wooden structure that looks to be on its last legs, but which can still provide a lot of comfort. Some of our bodies of water, in fact, have become well-known to boaters as places where the lucky can tie up far from shore, cook a light meal, rest and even seek shelter from a mild storm. For example, Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island Sound in the southwestern part of our state have a number of simple, one-story, wood-frame cabins set on pilings. The temporary home-away-from-home usually has no electricity, no plumbing, no phone, and a distance from shore that precludes cell-phone service. They do, however, often have rain gutters to collect water that the fishermen can use for cooking or even drinking. Florida officials declared the shacks navigational hazards and causers of pollution and actually began to burn some of them down in the mid-1980s, but consultants hired by the fishermen pointed out that the water around the shanties was too shallow for boats to collide with the structures and many fishermen used chemical toilets. As a result, some of the shacks have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places because of their importance in local heritage, and that should preserve them until a powerful hurricane hits them directly. The flimsy-looking structures, usually made of pine or cypress, can nicely withstand the subtropical sun, the wind and rain. Metal gable roofs and board-and-batten siding protect those inside from storms, and screened windows keep out the flies. The shacks have a good air flow with shutters that can be propped open.

The wooden stilt houses in Biscayne Bay south of Cape Florida have long been famous among fishermen in Miami-Dade County. Standing about 10 feet above shallow water on wooden or reinforced concrete pillars, Stiltsville dates back to the 1920s and 1930s. Some of the structures may have begun as places for alcohol consumption during Prohibition and for gambling, which was legal a mile offshore, and some of them became quite elaborate. When Congress expanded the Biscayne National Park in 1980 to include Stiltsville, the existing shacks were allowed to remain, but hurricanes and natural deterioration have taken their toll. Today only seven of the original structures remain, but the park service has added hurricane strapping to help the remaining shacks withstand strong winds. “No trespassing” signs warn interlopers to stay away, and access to the structures is limited to their owners and friends. Stiltsville has been featured enough in magazine articles that many visitors go to Biscayne Bay to see the remaining shacks. That has provided docents an opportunity to teach many non-residents about the rich maritime history of the area. The above-mentioned are just a few of the different kinds of fishing shacks in our waters, some quite elaborate, some pretty basic, but many with a history and allure that makes them part of our fishing history. Of course, our selection included the most non-appetizing color combination we could find. One lure was streamed on either side a respectable distance astern. Within 10 minutes, Skip had a sailfish chasing the baits and striking one of the lures. What he did is etched in memory. Instead of trolling in a straight line, working shallower and then deeper, changing speed, or doing any of the common trolling tactics, Skip took a different approach. He would make a sharp turn to port and a couple of minutes later he made a sharp turn to starboard. This created slack line on the side of the turn and increased speed for the lure on the outside of the turn. When he switched direction, the lure that had sunk picked up speed and headed back to the surface. Let me tell you that the technique works. Fishing with Capt. Bouncer Smith out of Miami, I learned something else. Inshore waters are burdened with no-wake zones designed to slow down fast-moving boats heading for open water. While most anglers are frustrated by the slow progress in these waters and can’t wait to get through this delay, Bouncer takes a different approach. He has two rods rigged with swimming plugs, and he streams them astern as he enters the no-wake zone. It’s surprising how many fish he catches on those plugs in areas that hardly anyone fishes. Another skipper showed me that after he streamed the standard trolling spread, he put another bait directly astern and close to the boat. It surprised me to see how many fish came up and hit that bait. This seems to work particularly well on tuna. If you fail to raise fish on that short bait, try fishing it long down the middle. That puts it farther astern than the other baits.
Aboard some of the bigger boats with outriggers, captains often troll their long and short baits at specific distances astern. The clips on the outriggers are attached so that when each line is clipped on, it positions the bait or lure at the same spot each time. I prefer to adjust the length of the lines based on sea conditions and results. There are days on the water when shorter distances astern work and other times when the results are better if you troll the baits farther back. As a reminder if you troll natural baits, dead or alive, they should be changed frequently. Too many anglers simply put baits or lures astern and steer a straight course. Successful trolling demands concentration and dedication to details. The key lies in making changes from where you position the offerings to the speed you use and the courses you steer. If you’re not raising fish, keep making changes until you do.

arpon Springs, a small town on the west coast of Florida an hour north of St. Petersburg, is a best-kept secret for redfish and snook. It sits within a web of waterways connecting the Gulf of Mexico to rivers, lakes, ponds, marshes and eventually Tampa Bay. This vast system offers excellent inshore opportunities, and it’s a ton of fun to explore under paddle power. I know a local who grew up there and knows the water like the back of his hand. Kevin Hawkins, owner of Kaku Kayaks, invited me out on the water to try his newest SUP, the Voodoo. Kevin lives, eats and breathes fishing. When he’s not fishing from one of his kayaks or SUPs, he’s thinking about ways to design these boats so they’re better to fish from. The Voodoo is a hybrid that melds the best qualities of an SUP, a kayak and a micro-skiff. We launched from his local ramp on a Saturday afternoon a cou-
ple hours before sunset. I don’t have the words to describe the picturesque setting that spread out before me. Mangroves, oyster beds and hidden shoals were in abundance. We paddled to the tip of a mangrove island where a smaller canal led to docks, sandbars and windbreaks. We had to cross the main channel to get there, and there was a 1- to 2-foot chop with the boating traffic and winds. The Voodoo was stable and fast, tracking straight as it cut through the channel. I was surprised the chop didn’t offer more of a challenge, but the hull design of the Voodoo is flawless. It also features a chair, which—without adjustment—offers two seated positions and can be used as a poling platform. The boat paddles well from a seated or standing position, and the ability to make powerful strokes with a low center of gravity came in handy during the crossing. As we rounded the tip of the island, we found wind-shade in a pocket. We poled down to cast right under the mangroves and docks. The Voodoo’s stern has five molded-in Power Pole mounts that allow for dual or single Power Pole Micros. And from a stability standpoint, the boat might as well be the deck of a skiff. Kevin hooked into a 25-inch redfish and fought it with ease from the open deck. As we paddled through the backside of the mangrove islands, we cast to oyster beds and under docks. The final spot Kevin had planned was a back corner of an area with a long sea wall and sand flats. Kevin wanted to hit it right at sunset, when the redfish bite is best. ou couldn’t tell by looking in the tannic-stained water, but Capt. Gary Dubiel was convinced redfish were holding just a few feet from the bank. “Toss your line up tight and see what happens,” he instructed. My cork popper landed with a splat and the trailing DOA shrimp settled toward the bottom. I waited a second, gave a “pop” and watched the cork slide under with an 8-pound red in full protest. “They’ll smack that setup every time,” smiled the skipper. It’s no secret that the coastal waters of North Carolina teem with redfish and stripers, but many visiting anglers focus their efforts solely on inlet and ocean waters. For truly amazing topwater action, the bays, creeks and river systems are also well worth exploring. “There’s amazing variety on the inside here,” said Dubiel, of Spec Fever Guide Service (www.specfever.com), who specializes in putting light-tackle and fly-fishing fans right in the mix. Dubiel especially enjoys working the Neuse River area because it hosts stripers and seatrout year-round, plus redfish from spring though mid-October. “These stripers are estuarine and don’t run to the ocean,” he explained. “They typically measure up to 32 inches, which makes them perfect for light gear and fly rods. Even better, they mix in with the specks and slot-sized redfish. We often catch all three on the same trip.” The striper action really heats up in late April when the bass return from spawning farther upriver to offer outstanding surface action from Oriental to New Bern, N.C. Much of the fun takes place in knee-deep depths here in the river’s mouth at Pamlico Sound, and that makes for a ton of topwater thrills. Interestingly, the Neuse River—America’s widest at 6 miles across the mouth— doesn’t have a lunar rise and fall in tides. Rather than look for current, Dubiel works around structure while using a trolling motor to quietly get in and out of

Some of our wood fields are pretty expansive.” Push up into the Neuse River tributaries above and below New Bern and you’ll also find largemouth bass, crappie and perch. The creeks stay warmer than the river in the winter months, so there are times in late winter and early spring when you might catch any of these along with a striper, redfish or speckled trout as well. “It certainly makes for an interesting mixed bag,” quipped Dubiel. I
n sixth place headed into the final day of the Bassmaster Classic on March 18 at lake Hartwell, S.C., Alabama’s Jordan Lee was in striking distance to do what only two anglers have ever done—win the Super Bowl of bass fishing twice in a row. And he did it. With a final day surge that took him to the scales with 16 pounds, 5 ounces, Lee tallied a three-day total of 47-1 to edge out California pro Brent Ehrler by a single pound. With his Classic win last year at Lake Conroe, Texas, Lee joins Rick Clunn and Kevin VanDam as the only three anglers in the history of the sport to win back-to-back classics. With the $300,000 purse, Lee pushed his career earnings with B.A.S.S past the million-dollar mark.
“It was just a perfect week for me,” Lee told Bassmaster. “I caught fish on five different baits and a lot of different techniques.” Boat docks were the ticket to Lee’s success. Following poor practice rounds, he could not nail down a strong pattern. From Day 1, Lee reverted to his comfort zone and his strength. “I just wanted to cover as much water as I could to give myself the best chance of putting a bait in front of a fish,” he told Bassmaster. “On this lake, I knew boat docks were going to play because they always do—and that’s what I like to do.” Live on Day 1, video showed Lee pumping his fists over a chunky largemouth he finessed out from under a dock with black floats. Black floats tend to warm the water around them, and the fish were staging up prior to the spawn. A strong sack of 18-10 on Day 1 must have buoyed Lee’s confidence in the dock pattern. Despite catching nothing but smaller spotted bass and just 12-2 on Day 2, Lee was still solidly in the top 25 to make the cut to fish Championship Sunday. Lee found his magic pocket on Day 3. Fishing a Strike King Rage Swimmer, a Strike King Ocho and a Strike King Shimmy Stick, he stuck to that one little pocket and pulled fish from beneath almost every dock. Green pumpkin was his primary color. Jason Christie, of Oklahoma, who led through the first two days of competition, dropped back to third place after the final day with a three-day total of 45-15. Ehrler’s 46-1 earned him second place. Alabama pro Mark Daniels Jr. caught the Berkley Big Bass of the tournament, a 6-pound, 11-ounce largemouth that won him $2,500. ike land hunters or rod-and-reel fishermen, spearos also study and perfect some tricks of the trade. Spearos immerse themselves into the fishes’ environment, so the first skill to master is to look like you belong there. Beginners tend to exhibit aggressive behavior, chasing and spooking fish. If fish scatter when you get near, study how calmly an experienced diver moves in the water. Until you achieve a non-threatening aura, all other tips and tricks will be useless. After achieving smooth diving technique, here are some techniques to get near fish. 1) Aspetto (Italian for “wait”)—It starts from the surface with a smooth duck-dive into the water while removing the snorkel. You descend with soft kicks until you begin to free-fall as you scan the bottom. By turning your fin blades, you maneuver to the right spot, perhaps where the reef meets sand. You lie motionless on the bottom until curious fish come to check you out. Moving only your eyes, you pick out the prey, move your gun slowly, and make a well-placed shot. A good spearo will make this technique look easy, but it is not. This is especially effective with evasive fish that become curious when you do not move, such as mutton snappers in Florida, stripers in the northeast, and bigeye emperors in Hawaii. 2) Agguato (Italian for “ambush”)–This is a dynamic stalking technique to get closer to prey without being noticed. The diver navigates the bottom using the environment to get closer to the prey. The diver must consider current, visibility and available bottom structure while moving from one object to another, blending into shadows or hiding behind reef formations. If your body can be hidden while closing the gap, the fish will remain unaware of your presence.
3) Flashers/ Sheri Daye practices “aspetto” technique. chum—Especially Photo by Joe Marino effective for hunting pelagics such as jacks, tunas, dolphin and wahoo. Multiple mirrors dangle below a float, and the flashes of light in the water imitate the reflective glare from a school of baitfish. The fish come in to investigate. Chum can be used in combination with a flasher to bring them even closer and keep them interested. In addition to these techniques, serious spearos are likely to train in a pool, use meditation techniques, and do cardio exercises to increase their breath hold capacity. Many take freediving classes to increase bottom time and safety. While there is no certification required to do it, classes should be a pre-requisite, as freediving is a sport that can lead to “blackout” and death if not practiced correctly. Spearfishing is a beautiful, selective way to catch fish, but it is also physically and mentally demanding. Above all, be safe and happy hunting! hen Jesus Chavarria was a small boy nearly 60 years ago, he remembers a giant silver fish with huge scales brought to the dock at his home in the small Pacific river port of Sierpe, Costa Rica. No one had any idea what it was. He went on to captain offshore sport fishing boats all over the west coast of Costa Rica for the next 35 years and retired a few years ago to taking guests fishing the backwaters of the Sierpe River. His specialty is snook but now and then he began to catch tarpon. Tarpon are not indigenous to the Pacific Ocean, but over the years anglers began to encounter a tarpon now and then. The thought is that over more than a century since it was constructed, the Panama Canal has provided passage for tarpon, which now reside in the Pacific. Tarpon capture has been recorded as far south as Colombia and as far north as El Salvador. Saul Porras’ capture of a tarpon that weighed barely 3 pounds at a creek mouth in southern Costa Rica changed the whole thought process. Chances that a fish that small swam through the canal and that far are slim. Are tarpon now breeding in the Pacific? FECOP, the sport fishing advocacy and conservation group in Costa Rica, agreed to sponsor a project to find out more about tarpon in the Pacific. They contacted Didiher Chacon, who had worked on a Costa Rican Caribbean tarpon project almost three decades ago in Barra del Colorado for Dr. Roy Crabtree, of Florida. He agreed to work on the science part of the project. “The Sierpe Wetlands are perfect habitat for juvenile tarpon,” explained Chacon. “That very well may account for the increase in numbers of tarpon caught there in the last few years.” Most of the river tarpon are small, less than 30 pounds, but fish as large as 100 pounds have also been taken. Phase 1 of the project will concentrate in southern Costa Rica. A DNA comparison will be done between Pacific-caught tarpon and tarpon taken from different parts of the Caribbean side of the country. They will also study what the Pacific tarpon have been feeding on. Today this can be done with a small tissue sample without sacrificing the fish. All Pacific caught tarpon will also be tagged. Chacon noted that there is a possibility over time for tarpon to change the ecology of the rivers. It is not yet known what they are feeding on or how they will affect native fish. The Pacific-side tarpon are now showing with enough frequency to make it worth finding out. Tropical storm Nate delayed the project when the massive amounts of rain that fell not only caused major landslides but also completely flushed everything out of most of the country’s rivers. ot long ago, people didn’t know there were great white sharks off the coast of South Carolina. Now, thanks to the obsessive pursuit of them by Outcast Sport Fishing Charter Capt. Chip Michalove, everyone knows they’re out there, and in numbers during the winter months. Michalove seems to have figured it out, and he’s not sharing his secrets for fear of hurting the species he spent more than a decade trying to pattern. The captain has caught nearly 30 of these apex predators over the last three years. His most recent catch has made national news after a post about him catching a 16-foot-long, 3,000-pound white shark went viral from his Facebook page. Journalist Mandy Matney wrote in Hilton Head Island’s Island Packet about Michalove’s giant fish. She reported that with a two-man skeleton crew, Michalove had to radio to another fishing boat for backup to bring the giant fish boatside where it could be tagged and released. Michalove tags great whites for the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy in Chatham, Mass., according to the Island Packet report. They are working to study the movements of the sharks in the Atlantic, and through technique Michalove does everything he can to put minimal stress on the animals.
