We’ve all had nights when we just can’t lie down in bed and sleep, whether it’s from heartburn, cardiac problems, hip or back aches – it could be a variety of reasons. Those are the nights we’d give anything for a comfortable chair to sleep in, one that reclines to exactly the right degree, raises feet and legs to precisely the desired level, supports the head and shoulders properly, operates easily even in the dead of night, and sends a hopeful sleeper right off to dreamland.

FISHING BIG WORMS FOR SUMMER BASS BRANDON LESTER

A

s far as baits go for summer fishing, you’ll see a wide variety of techniques come into play. Big crankbaits, jigs, swimbaits, spoons and all sorts of other baits will catch fish as the warm water temperatures of summer arrive. One bait I’ve always had a ton of confidence in this time of year is a big worm. It’s a very versatile bait that just gets bites in the summer months. Big plastic worms have been around a long time, and they’re often overlooked. You can use a big worm with a light bullet-shaped weight and swim it through grass in shallow water or put a heavier weight on and fish it 30 feet deep. It has a big profile that is just the right size for fish looking to make an easy meal after the spawn is done. That shallow grass bite is extremely fun and isn’t all that common these days. X Zone Lures has a new one out called the Blitz worm that’s 11 inches long and is the perfect size for big summertime bass. It has a ribbon-style tail that has great

action and is available in the best colors as well. I throw big worms on an MHX-NEPS90HF 7’6” heavy power rod and 17-lb. Vicious 100% fluorocarbon. That rod is perfect for maintaining the proper contact with the worm on a long cast and getting a good hook in the fish, especially big fish. A key part of my gear setup is the Mustad Big Bite worm hook. It’s a round-bend style and a 4/0 up to 6/0 is my go-to for big worm fishing. In recent years, we’ve been fishing big worms on a heavy shaky head, too. A ¼- to ½-ounce shaky head allows the worm to stand up a little straighter on the bottom. It is a great way to fish them. I always encourage people to try new baits and new techniques, but don’t pass up throwing a big worm this summer. It works – trust me.

ith state control of Gulf of Mexico red snapper seasons, recreational anglers are seeing more access to one of the most popular fisheries on the planet. However, keeping track of when and where you’re allowed to fish is now harder than ever. With 2019 state summer seasons already open and rocking along, here’s a quick run-down of the regulations so you can tell whether or not you’re allowed to make red snapper fishing a part of your summer vacation.

State Seasons Florida: June 11-July 12, with a possible fall season if there is available quota. Alabama: Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from June 1-July 28, plus Thursday, July 4. Mississippi: May 24-Sept. 2 (Labor Day), with a mid-season closure from July 8-28. Louisiana: Opened May 25 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until the state’s recreational quota of 743,000 pounds is met. Harvest is also allowed on the Monday of Memorial Day and the Thursday of the Fourth of July. Texas: Open year-round in state waters. State waters extend from the coastline out to the 9-mile mark for Texas and Florida’s Gulf coast. State waters in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana stretch out to three miles from the coast. The daily bag limit is two fish per person with a 16-inch minimum length, except in Texas, where there is a four fish per person daily limit with a 15-inch minimum length requirement. A state-specific license is needed for whichever state waters an angler plans to be in possession of red snapper. Each state is also collecting its own red snapper harvest data. Reporting requirements and self-reporting for each state can be conducted through the following apps. See the state websites for information on how to obtain these apps. Florida: iAngler Guld Red Snapper App Alabama: Snapper Check Mississippi: Tails n’ Scales Louisiana: Recreational Offshore Landing Permit App Texas: iSnapper App Federal Season Federally permitted for-hire vessels have 62 days to fish the Gulf of Mexico in federal waters. The federal season is June 1-Aug. 2.

TARGETING SHORELINE SNOOK

By Will Schmidt

I

t was a typical steamy morning with no wind and flat calm surf. Although I was casting toward the rising sun and could not see into the water, the large accelerating wake tipped me off to a fast-coming strike. Moments later my line was tight and chaos ensued as the large snook made for deeper water. This is a regular occurrence during the summer along the beaches of southwest Florida, and fortunately it can be enjoyed from a boat or the beach, making it accessible to all. You don’t even need to know secret spots, just get out and start looking.

Sure it’s helpful to use your fishing senses to start your search. I like to begin at a pass if possible, but these fish will spread out up and down the beaches. Beach fish tend to be found in one of two places, cruising down deeper cuts or sitting tight to the beach waiting to ambush unsuspecting prey. Because of this, when on foot, it is very important to keep your distance from the water. These laid-up fish can be in extremely shallow water sitting in that first little drop off where the waves lap up, and if you are too close they will see you long before you see them. When choosing your lures, keep in mind that the water is usually pretty clean here and you are fishing over a white sandy bottom. For that reason, lighter colors work best. Spoons can be deadly, and I’m partial to a Reflecto spoon. Bucktail jigs in white, soft swimbaits in light colors and suspending twitch baits all work well, too. You will often see schools of pilchards along the beach, so anything that emulates them is usually a good choice. For tackle, don’t over do it. This is light-tackle fishing at it’s best. A good portion of these beaches is clear from snags and hazards, so heavy gear is not needed. I opt for a G Loomis PR844 popping rod. Its light action allows me to cast anything from a small white bait to a jig. A Shimano 2500 Stradic balances out well, and when spooled with braid gives you plenty of line with stopping power, too. I opt for slightly heavier, 17-pound braid for a couple reasons. In the rare case when a snook does find that one lost crab trap, I have a little more oomph to turn the fish. More importantly, I like the slightly heavy line for knot strength and durability. Regardless of whether you’re in a boat or on foot, fishing the beaches is great. Almost anyone, from a seasoned pro to a visiting newbie, has a great chance at catching fish. Productive beaches are easily accessible and don’t take a lot of preparation or equipment. A pocket full of lures and extra leader is all you really need. Will Schmidt is a seasoned tournament angler and has been writing about fishing for more than two decades.

CCA STAR 4,000 Anglers, $500K in Prizes and Scholarships

T

he CCA Florida STAR competition presented by Yamaha kicked off on Memorial Day weekend, engaging over 4,000 anglers in conservation. The 101-day event invites anglers of all ages and skill levels to walk away with their share of $500,000 in prizes. During the opening week, five unregistered anglers caught 2019 STAR tagged redfish and missed their choice of a brand-new truck or boat, motor and trailer package in the event’s signature iHeart Radio Tagged Redfish Division, including a GMC Sierra pickup truck, a Contender Boats 22 Sport, a Pathfinder Boats 2200 TRS, a Hewes Redfisher 16, a 21’ Carolina Skiff, or a Relentless Boats 24’ Aluminum Bay/Flats boat, all powered by Yamaha Outboards. The CCA Florida STAR competition releases an average of four tagged redfish per coastal county in the state, three counties have eight tagged fish and those are Brevard, Charlotte and Citrus counties. Each year during the competition, anglers catch the fish and call, per tag instructions. And each year, most anglers who catch these tagged fish miss out on a $40,000+ prize package because they aren’t registered, or never thought it would happen to them. Since its inception, the competition has awarded five prizes in the signature redfish division, with over 90 tagged redfish caught in those four years and nearly $900,000 in total prizes. Registration remains open throughout the competition until Labor Day. The STAR competition launched in Florida in 2015 with a focus on conservation through the use of technology and a catch-photo-release format. CCA Florida uses the social media-based event to educate the public on the importance of protecting Florida’s marine resources, and STAR’s smart phone app eliminates the requirement for anglers to harvest or capture and transport fish, while promoting the proper handling of all species. In addition, non-anglers can participate and win by collecting trash and debris. With 17 total divisions, prizes are awarded by random drawing in most divisions and include boats, cash payouts, tackle and marine electronics. As in past years, current New Tide Members (CCA members ages 6 – 17) can enjoy continued free registration in the Youth Scholarship Division, presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors, which offers $100,000 in scholarships. For a full list of divisions, visit ccaflstar.com. For more information on STAR, or to register, visit ccaflstar.com.

f you’ve ever competed in a fishing tournament, then you understand how the thrill of the hunt fueled by a competitive drive can create levels of excitement, anticipation, joy and crushing defeat all in the same day… or the same hour, for that matter! When you bring hundreds of people together that share this passion to help find a cure for leukemia, you have what promises to be a great time! Once you throw in the drag-screaming thrill of a big king mackerel, you’ve found yourself smack in the middle of the C-quarters Marina Kingfish Shootout in Carrabelle, Fla. Anyone capable of making it Carrabelle in August should participate. It’s a great tournament, and anyone has the potential to bring home the gold. In the world of competitive fishing, it’s anybody’s game on any given day. This event has a Spanish mackerel division, giving competitors more chances to win and more species to chase. Obviously, due to their smaller size, the Spanish mackerel won’t burn the bearing out of most reels like a king can, but on light tackle these fish put up as much fight, pound-for-pound, as any of them! These toothy critters demand wire leaders and smooth drags. A 40-pound skyrocketing king will cut through mono effortlessly, and if your reel has a sticky drag, forget it; they strike with incredible speed! Live or dead bait will get them to strike, as will a variety of trolled plugs or duster rigs. When trolling, try to target different depths and vary your speed. Some days they want their targets moving fast, and on others, they want it slow or dead still. This is where one of my favorite ways to catch them comes into play. Anchor up or drift with several flat-lines out with an offering of live or dead baits such as cigar minnows, Spanish sardines or even pinfish. Enjoy a cold beverage and a snack, bask in the warm sun and take in the beauty of the Gulf of Mexico. When that peaceful moment is interrupted by the sound of a screaming drag and a bent rod, you’ll be hooked on king mackerel fishing just like me. These fish are incredible fighters, and big ones can peel off a hundred yards of line in mere seconds! C-quarters Marina will host the 16th Annual Kingfish Shootout Aug. 3-4 in Carrabelle, Fla. Solace Boats has unveiled the newest center console that will surely take the fishing world by storm. When the pencil first hit paper, quality in design was a top concern. Each line brought to life a vision for the future of boating which simultaneously revised long-standing marine principles. Rather than aimless innovation, every item (new and old) saw thoughtful design for longevity followed by extreme testing. Quality truly was engineered into boats.

Center sp A YEAR CHASING THE ROYAL BILLFISH SLAM

Editor’s Note: IGFA’s Billfish Royal Slam requires anglers, over a lifetime, to catch nine species of billfish. The following is how Trent Glaub, of Palm Beach, Fla., completed a Billfish Royal Slam in less than a year. By Trent Glaub 1) Black marlin; Los Suenos, Costa Rica; March 20, 2018— On vacation with my wife Stacy and our daughter Marlynn (pronounced marlin), we fished with Capt. Randall aboard the Go Fish. Slow-trolling bridled tuna, I hooked into what I thought was a big jack… until we saw the dorsal fin. “Negro, negro!” yelled Capt. Randall. I battled the estimated 400-pound black marlin stand-up on 30-pound tackle and achieved my first-ever marlin release. I had no idea how lucky I was until Carey Chen told me he’s caught more than 300 blue marlin and is still in search of his first black. I set out to catch all five marlin species. I hadn’t even thought about the Royal Slam yet.

We made a 50-mile, two-hour run to the Finger Bank. When we arrived, the ocean was alive with birds and porpoise balling schools of bait. The bait was so thick we dip-netted sardines, hooked them and pitched them back out, sight fishing to striped marlin on bait balls. My wife, my daughter and I were hooked up nonstop, and we ended up returning to the marina flying 20 release flags.

6) Pacific sailfish; Casa Vieja Lodge, Guatemala; Dec. 28-30, 2018—This year, with my 40th birthday on Christmas Day, the girls and I spent the holidays in Guatemala aboard the 35’ Knowles A-FIN-ITY with Capt. Niko. 2) White marlin; West End, Grand Bahama; May 5, 2018— I was fishThe fishing was great. I quickly knocked Pacific sailfish off the list and ing the Mike Schmidt Winner’s Circle Tournament out of Old Bahama Bay went on to catch a bunch of them, taking turns with Stacy and Marlynn. with my regular tournament team on the Fragrant Harbor, captained by Joe Garbo. The white marlin took a ballyhoo trolled on 50-pound tackle. 7) Atlantic sailfish; Palm Beach, Fla.; Jan. 1, 2019— I’ve fished the Silver Phillies Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt signed my release flag. This year we finally I broke off what would have been my first Atlantic blue marlin during won it by one fish aboard the 60’ Viking Fragrant Harbor. I chose to use this tournament. this special sailfish for the Royal Slam. It ate a live goggle eye on 20-pound tackle. 3) Pacific blue marlin; Kona, Hawaii; June 23, 2018— On family vacaWith just two species to go, I decided to push for the Royal Slam in less tion, we fished with Capt. It was an intense battle even on 130-pound tackle. 8) Swordfish; Palm Beach, Fla.; Feb. 16, 2019— My buddy Connor McKWith three species down, I was still looking for my Atlantic blue mar- ee and I set out on a beautiful night in my 32’ Intrepid No Worries. More than an hour later, Conner stuck the estimated 200-pound fish with a harpoon. It had a 74-inch lower-jaw-to-fork length. 4) Atlantic blue marlin; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Oct. 21, 2018— I broke my curse during the San Juan International Billfish Tournament aboard 9) Shortbill spearfish; Kona, Hawaii; March 16, 2019— I boarded The the Heavy Duty with Capt. nglers out of Panama City have something new to look forward to after Bay County deployed 25 artificial reef structures in the Gulf of Mexico in June. These were the first of several reef projects planned for the area, using Natural Resources Damage Assessment funding. With a price tag of $120,000, the project is just a slice of more than $900,000 in Gulf Oil Spill money coming to Bay County for artificial reef construction. “Artificial reefs are absolutely critical to not only the economy of Bay County but also the ecosystem of the waters off our shores,” Bay County Commissioner Bill Dozier said in a news release. “These new reefs will be an important part of our recovery, and we are proud that the program is coming to fruition.” The new reefs were deployed in 80 feet of water about 12 miles east of St. Andrews Bay Pass in the Sherman Artificial Reef Permit area. Several other reef deployments are planned over the next year in state waters east and west of the pass.

ffective June 5, Florida banned harvest and possession of shoal bass from the Chipola River and its tributaries. Anglers are still permitted to catch release shoal bass. Recent sampling produced significantly lower catches of shoal bass, potentially due to the impacts of Hurricane Michael. “Shoal bass are one of the least common bass species found in Florida because of their limited range,” said FWC’s Chris Paxton. “We are doing everything we can to ensure through proactive conservation actions that the shoal bass population remains healthy, and anglers have the opportunity to enjoy this vibrant and valued bass species for years to come.” FWC biologists collected and transported 16 shoal bass from the Chipola River to be spawned and potentially supplement the population. Shoal bass are similar in shape to largemouth bass, but unlike the largemouth, the shoal bass has scales on the base portion of the second dorsal fin; its first and second dorsal fins are clearly connected, and its upper jaw does not extend past the eye. Shoal bass also lack the dark lateral (down the side) band that largemouth have. Shoal bass have vertical stripes above the midline of the body which resemble tiger stripes. The Chipola River is the only waterbody in Florida with naturally reproducing, genetically pure shoal bass. It is a spring-fed cold-water river that stretches about 95 miles, starting just north of Marianna and running south through Dead Lake and into the Apalachicola River. The Chipola River runs through Jackson, Calhoun and Gulf counties. A Chipola River video can be viewed on YouTube by searching “FWC Chipola River.” To contact the Northwest Regional Office, call 850-265-3676.

39th annual Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament By Captain Jeff Lentz

H

ello to all my fellow anglers out there. July is almost here and so is 39th annual Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament. The kingfish arrived early as anglers were catching fish on the nearshore wrecks in late April which should mean the kingfish bite will be wide open during the week of our tournament which is July 15-20. The GJKT will start with the GJKT Redfish Tournament on Saturday July 13th. Again, this year we will have two divisions – power boat and kayak. Prizes will be awarded for the top five fish in each category with $1500.00 cash going to the top fish in the power boat division and a brand-new kayak going to the top winner in the kayak division. We would like to thank C&L Landscaping Inc., Rick’s Bait and Tackle, and Beach Boulevard Motorsports and Marine for the great prize structure for the Redfish Tournament. Starting Monday, July 15th our tournament site will open and you will be able to register on site for our General Tournament. This will also be the final day to register for the Junior Angler Tournament. One of the Tournament improvements we have made this year is that Junior Anglers may fish the Junior Angler Tournament without their boat being registered in the General Tournament. And to continue with improving the Junior Angler Tournament, this year’s first prize is a Bass Tracker boat, 25 HP Yamaha motor, and trailer package worth over $7,000 courtesy of our sponsors, TBL Landmark Construction, Atlantic Coast Marine, and Waylen Bay Marine! (I can see the parents of the child winning this prize asking to borrow their child’s boat.) Also, with the opening of the site, folks will be able to visit the site and shop our boutique, get a cold drink in the Liar’s Tent and satisfy those hunger pains by visiting the Kingfish Cafe. July 16th we will host our Jr Angler Dock Tournament at the tournament site. This tournament is for children under fifteen years of age and will be fished from the dock. We will award prizes for the top three fish (length measurement) caught. Each participating child receive a T-shirt, a captains bag, plus a hot dog lunch. (This tournament is limited to one hundred participants.) July 18th and 19th is when the general kingfish tournament begins. Contender Boats is our sponsor of the first prize in the big fish category and this year they have provided us with a twenty-four-foot Contender Sport center console. That boat will be equipped with a 250 HP Yamaha motor and trailer and will be valued at over $108,000! On the aggregate side first place will again be $10,000 cash thanks to our sponsor Custom Tree Surgeons. We will continue with our single engine category with the first-place winner taking home a 115 HP Yamaha motor valued at over $13,500! Another upgrade this year will be in the Lady Angler competition. This year’s winner will receive a beautiful crystal trophy courtesy of Mrs. Linda King in honor of her late husband and longtime friend of the tournament Senator Jim King, along with $1,500 cash. Thank you to our sponsor Logan Diving for enabling us to enhance the Lady Angler prize structure. All four of the above listed divisions pay out through ten places. All anglers fishing the General Tournament will be eligible to enter the Tournament Within the Tournament. (I have made the mistake of not entering the TWT and missed out on some serious money when I caught a prize-winning fish.) The City of Jacksonville has graciously supplied us with a portable stage that we are going to use to weigh kingfish. Frattle Stairs and Rails constructed and donated a state of the art scale stand which we will hang our weigh scale from. The Federal Government threw us a curve ball this year when they 1 NE FLORIDA

JULY 2019

announced that one of the days anglers in our area will be allowed to harvest red snapper will be on July 19th. In order to provide our kingfish anglers the ability to not miss out on harvesting one of these great eating fish we created a red snapper division. All anglers fishing in the General Tournament on July 19th will have the opportunity to weigh their red snapper caught that day, with the top five heaviest fish receiving prizes. Those prizes are $1,500, $700, $600, $400 and $300! The tournament is also going to return the snapper to the angler after weigh in. All of this was made possible by our sponsors The Palms Fish Camp Restaurant, and the Jacksonville Marine Association in memory of John Lowe and Pete Lofton. Also, this year we are going to award a prize for a mystery weight fish for both a kingfish and a red snapper. Those prizes will be $1,000 and $500 respectively. If all of the before mentioned ways to win money and prizes at this year’s GJKT are not enough we are going issue tickets to all anglers donating their extra kingfish to the Tournament and those tickets will be entered into a drawing for five $100 bills. We will also have two great raffles going on at the tournament site during the week of the tournament. Shimano has donated a matched set (4) of Shimano Tallus rods with Trinidad reels valued at over $3,000. Nosara Paradise Rentals has donated a one week stay at their location in Nosara Costa Rica valued at over $5,000. Two lucky people will own these prizes when the winning tickets are drawn at the awards ceremony. The Tournament will conclude with our awards ceremony on Saturday, July 20th. We will have seafood, hamburgers and hotdogs for your dining pleasure as well as plenty of cold beverages and the George Aspinall Band. All of this fun is going to take place at the Sister’s Creek boat ramp off of Heckscher Drive. Please come out and support the Jacksonville Marine Charities and have a great time! Good luck and tight lines Captain Jeff Lentz Tournament Chairman 2019

Fishing Report & Forecast Mayport By Capt. Kirk Waltz

T

he heat is here and to no surprise. June was a rollercoaster of a month with kings on the beach for the first of the month and then wham we get a Southeast flow that will not stop of all things. The constant strong se flow just made it tough. True to form I believe July is going to be a great month. Look for bait to continue to hold on the area beaches and build on the offshore stuff. The menhaden schools on the beach will hold tarpon, sharks, big jacks, cobia, and kingfish. The early bird in these scenarios will get the first offerings. Grab a few baits on the edges of a big school and work back into the school quietly. I like a medium heavy spinning rod like the Penn Blue Carnage Jigging 7ft rod with a 6500 Spinfisher V and 60lb braid. A 2ft leader of 80lb fluorocarbon and a stout hook completes the rig. I will sometimes pin a small float to this and pitch back into the bait with fresh live bait. Hook the pogies in the nose or dorsal and see which is most effective. If no strikes occur try putting a 2oz egg sinker above the leader to get it to the bottom. If nothing happens right in the school try backing away a few hundred yards and slow troll bait east and west in a zig zag pattern. I remember an instance just last summer when with a charter I ran to Atlantic Beach with Capt Steve Mullen and his wife Cindy following alongside to get bait in their boat. After catching bait and flipping into the pods with no luck I took off to the party grounds and saw a very large king skyrocket right on the beach. Minutes later I flipped the boat back to the beach and was rewarded with countless hookups on 20-30lb kings for a solid hour in 15-26ft of water! The offshore party grounds should be on fire this month with bait and predators stacking up on the reefs and wrecks. Look for schools of baitfish to mount on these spots. Jig a few up with either a no# 6 or 8 Sabiki rig and slow troll them or drop them down. Kings, cudas, AJ’s, sharks, cobia, sailfish, and Bonita will be on the prowl. Drop them on 2 NE FLORIDA

JULY 2019

the bottom and grouper, snapper, triggers, and sea bass will take these offerings quickly. Look for shrimp boats as you come out of the inlet. The boats are havens for sharks, jacks, and tarpon this time of the year. Scoop a dead croaker off the water or toss a live pogie in and hang on. Big bruisers are typically in the mix and can be real handfuls. I suggest big rods, reels, and line to make it a fair fight. When doing this please be mindful these guys are working and gave them some room. The big rocks should have a lot of action on the high outgoing clear water tides. Look for reds, trout, tarpon, and sharks to feed on live pogies, greenies, and mullet. Catch a few and pin them to a 3/8oz heavy jig and pitch them around the stones. As the water warms I like the clean water for better results. Shrimp do work this time of year but will catch a lot of small bait stealers too! Lastly, the month will hold some good action on bull reds. The big bruisers popped in during the cold water flush we had a few weeks ago and continue to be around. Cut blue crab, cut ladyfish steaks, and live pogies are the best bet soaked on the bottom in 32-42 ft of water. Look for them from the Coast Guard Base to Dames point on the edges of the St. John’s River. Big rods and stout tackle should be deployed to reduce stress on these ancient warriors. The last of the falling tides seem to be the best bet. Get out and fish. Remember you can’t catch them from the couch. Listen to the Outdoors Show each Saturday morning and get the areas fishing reports, tides, and weather on 1010am or 92.5fm from 7am to 10am. West Bank Seminar Series I

want to thank all the captains, sponsors and attendees who have joined us these past 5 months at the seminars. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. This idea came to me late last year when I attended a seminar hosted by George Povoromo in Islamorada. Being a REALTOR® in Orange Park, I wanted to connect with the community in a way that was not related to real estate. I also realized there wasn’t much like this going on in Clay County or West Jax for local anglers to participate in. I started talking with people I knew who were also passionate about fishing. With the help of my friend Mark Meacham with Watson Mortgage, together we hosted the first seminar with Noel Kuhn on surf fishing at our office in Orange Park. The event was so well-received, we realized we had something special, and it has developed into what we’re now calling

By Mark Feagle the “West Bank” Seminar Series. After that event, we decided to host seminars based on the target species for the upcoming month. In doing so, we would always have a variety of seminars for all anglers on the Westside of Jacksonville and Orange Park. I have really enjoyed hosting these seminars and meeting all the local captains and anglers that attend. We will continue the series in July with a Bull Redfish seminar – date is yet to be determined. Check out my website, Facebook or Eventbrite.com for details. I also want to send a special thanks to Dicks Sporting Goods of Orange Park for their generous support with door prizes; and to 57 Heaven of Orange Park for allowing us the venue to host everyone. “Tight lines” to all! We will see you next month!

reetings from JOSFC. We celebrated the Club’s 60th birthday June 6th with an awesome low country boil provided by Coastal Outdoors Fishing and Hunting, and Palms Fish Camp Restaurant. Our past presidents were invited back to share their wit, wisdom and club memories. We have the Kingfish Tuneup and Redfish tournament this month. Our offshore Kingfish Tune-up occurs just prior to the GJKT. Each boat can weigh up to three fish with the largest counting toward the tournament. Any type of bait may be used. Our inshore contest is for Redfish. This is a spot tournament. The angler receives one point for each spot on their fish. Members report that the flounder are stacking up at high tide and are feeding aggressively. We had one Captain releasing a 26 lb red snapper caught trolling a Rapala for Kings. Not a king, but a member landed a 79 lb Wahoo on a King rig.

Don’t forget the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament is July 15th-20th. Club members look forward to this contest all year. A number of members volunteer and/or fish this tournament annually. Upcoming: We will only have one meeting in July, on the 11th. We open the doors around 6:00 if you want to come early to visit, dinner is at 7:00, and we generally try to get started with the meeting about 7:30, and we will have a great raffle. All of our meetings are open to the public, you do not have to be a member to attend. We are family friendly so feel free to bring the kiddos! If they are a little too young to appreciate the guest speaker, please bring them a quiet activity to do at the table with you. We hope to see you there!

uly is definitely a hot month, and anglers should start their day as early as possible. The early bird gets the worm this month!!! You have probably heard me say before I let the tides dictate what I’m going to do in these hot summer months. If the tides are Low in the morning I will head to the back country and look for backing reds along shell bars grass lines, and edges of the mud flats. Fish them with the lightest jig you can get away with. Reds can be very spooky. If the tide is high in the morning I will generally look for a Trout, and other species, of course redfish will take a Lure so we catch them also. I try to let the tide dictate what fish would be best to fish for at that time because after 10:00 in the morning and seabreeze picks up and sun gets high the bite slows drastically. If you are planning all day fishing, think about going deeper to

Get Hooked on

cooler water, or split the day and fish the evening. Another good choice this time of year is beach fishing. As the sun gets up, look for pogie pods and pitch a TBS jig paired with a pogie, and a length of Fluorocarbon, and let the jig sink on the edge of the pod on the side they are moving, so as the jig is down, the baits move over it. Tarpon, Sharks, bull reds, jacks, & many other species can be had. Until next month, tight lines. Capt. Tony Bozzella / TBS JIGS Professional Angler / Guide www.tonybozzella.com 904 651 0182

Fishing Report & Forecast Fernandina / Amelia Island By Terry D. Lacoss

H

ot summer kingfish action will be at hand during the month of July which many seasoned fishermen believe is the best month when targeting speedy king mackerel. Schooling kingfish will be at hand at many of the near shore artificial and natural live bottoms where live bait trolling is key. “Smoker” kingfish will be prowling the pristine beaches of Amelia Island and both inlet mouths where king fishing with large live baits including mullet, whiting, yellowmouth trout and Spanish mackerel are sure to hook your fishing party up with a giant “Big Mack”. Summer kingfish will be also highlighted at the “39th Annual Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament” July 15-20, 2019, www. kingfishtournament.com. The “37th Annual Fernandina Beach Kingfish Tournament and Rodeo” August 2-4, 2019, www.nsfafish.net Steamy hot summer days also heats up beach fishing action where large schools of menhaden are a big drawing card for summer tarpon,

Finally, two 30 to 40-pound fishing tackle is rigged to a six-foot section of 80-pound monofilament leader and a 7/0 circle hook. Live whiting and croaker are caught while fishing on the bottom with a small piece of shrimp then nose hooked and set out 30 to 40-yards behind your drifting boat. Two or three small floats are also attached to the main line to keep the live baits close to the surface. This deadly chum/drifting technique typically lures kingfish and cobia to the long drop back live menhaden baits and tarpon and shark to the close in live whiting and croaker baits. Beach fishing is best early in the morning and late in the evening while fishing with live sand fleas, or fresh shrimp. Expect to catch pompano, whiting, blues, red and black drum. Sea trout will be running during the last few hours of the in-coming tide while casting a clear plastic curly tail with silver glitter when rigged to a red ¼ ounce jig head. Some of

kingfish, sharks, cobia and tarpon at both the Nassau and St. Mary’s inlets. Beach fishing can also provide hot summer fishing action where Spanish mackerel, menhaden and mullet are numerous. Simply look for diving sea birds and those clumsy pelicans! First order of business includes cast netting enough menhaden to fill a 120-quart cooler with freshly netted menhaden as well. Next fill your boat’s live well with 30 to 50 live menhaden, being careful to weed out the smaller menhaden while using the larger more attractive menhaden for live baits. Twenty to thirty pound class kingfish tackle includes a three-foot section of #3 coffee colored piano wire leader is employed with a fourinch section of #4 stinger wire is haywire wrapped to a #4-4x treble hook. The treble hook is barbed in the back of the menhaden and a small orange float is attached to the main fishing line to keep the menhaden close to the surface. With an early morning light southwest wind, set up a drift just 50-yards offshore of the largest concentrations of menhaden while chumming with cut pieces of menhaden. Two “Flat Line” kingfish rods are then rigged with two live baits fished some 100120 from your drifting boat.

the best areas of the beach include the footsteps of historic Fort Clinch, American Beach and the southern tip of Amelia Island where a set of rock jetties hold ambushing game fish. Sea trout action in the backwaters of Amelia Island is excellent during the early morning and late afternoon hours, particularly when there is a flooding tide. Look for schooling mullet over a shallow oyster laden flat to produce the best speck action while drifting a live finger mullet under a small float or casting a Storm “Chug Bug” in the chrome and blue color pattern. Redfish will be tailing in flooded spartina marshes during the last hour of the flood tide and the first hour of the falling tide. Work a white Berkley Gulp shrimp rigged to a 1/8th ounce led head jig slowly in potholes where tailing reds are foraging

ith air temps in the mid to upper 90’s this month it’s a good idea to get on the water as early, or as late as possible as the fish will be on the feed during those times and laying low during the heat of the day. Inshore toss your favorite top-water plug at first light for exciting redfish and trout blowups. Some favorite top-water plugs for our area are the Rapala Skitterwalk or Skitter-V. If you’re not an “early bird” check out the dusk bite using the same lures. The fishing right off the beach really comes alive this time of year. Huge sharks, tarpon, kingfish, and many

om

more will be chowin’ down on the giant pods of pogies right behind the breakers. It’s a great time to put your heavier tackle to the test! When looking to catch some redfish be on the lookout for concentrations of finger mullet or pogies on the flats. You can be 11 NE FLORIDA

guaranteed that at least a redfish or two will be hanging nearby a big wad of baitfish this time of year. During the higher tide stages one of my favorite lures to toss this time of year is Saltwater Assassin inline spinner bait as it nicely mimics a finger mullet. The water is murky right now and the bright flash of the spinners blade and the thump it creates while going through the water will be sure to get the fishes attention. On the lower tide stages a lot of the bigger fish will move to slightly deeper water where it’s a little cooler. Any kind of live or chunked bait will work well for reds, trout, and flounder when fishing deeper. A scented soft plastic fished very, very slow will also be a good bet. The flounder bite should be good this month at the St. Augustine and Mantanzas inlets and just about all the regular inshore flatty haunts. Fishing around the slack tides will give you the best chance to get your bait on the bottom where the flounder hide. Small to medium sized finger mullet on a fish finder rig can be deadly... Don’t be afraid to use a decent sized mullet to catch the doormats… just remember to let the flounder chew on the bait a few moments before setting the hook. One of my favorite fish, the tarpon, should be thick along the beach gorging themselves on the bait (pogy) pods just about now. They started to show around the shrimp boats and at the inlets last month and should have pogy’s on their mind now. The best bite will be early morning and just before or after the afternoon summer rainstorms. Rig a live pogy on a large 6/0-10/0 circle hook and fish the outside of the bait pods. Sometimes a little weight to help the pogy get down will help. Don’t forget to rig a rod with a plug for the giant jacks and spanish macs that will be on the pods as well. Capt. Tommy Derringer 904-377-3734 • www.InshoreAdventures.net

The Northeast Florida Marlin Association

T

he Northeast Florida Marlin Association recently held their Club Dolphin Tournament with some nice Mahi logged this year. Not a lot of big fish but we had good numbers. Anytime Sportfishing edged out the Reelxcape for the 2 fish aggregate win. The dog days of summer have arrived, and the offshore troll has slowed. The Mahi are scarce but for those willing to put some trolling time in the Blue Marlin will still be around and are usually really deep or on the other side of the gulf stream. This spring we’ve had a record braking Sailfish bite in Northeast Florida, it seems that may have slowed but a good number of releases have been recently reported by boats fishing the inshore reefs with some as close as 4-mile reef. Of course, those boats were King fishing, but sails love live baits! NEFMA recently hosted The Nuts & Bolts of fishing show (nutsandboltsfishing.com) which organized a tournament with local

guides who were invited to fish near shore and inshore with film crews accompanying several boats. They reported the Kingfish were wide open, had 4 sailfish releases and a hot flounder bite. The show airs on Saturdays and Sundays on Fox Sports. In case you’re interested the Northeast Florida Marlin Association clubhouse hosts many offshore and inshore tournaments each year and it’s also available for private parties. Speaking of tournaments, NEFMA will be hosting the upcoming Anytime Swordfishing Tournament which will run from July 15 until September 2. This will be a shoot-out style tournament where Captains can choose their days/nights. We will have more details on the NEFMA Facebook page and the NEFMA website.

Fishing Report & Forecast St. Augustine Offshore By Capt. Robert Johnson

Calm Seas It may be a little on the warm side but the perfect sea conditions more than make up for it. July, barring a tropical system, is one of the calmest months of the year. So what to do during these picture-perfect days? King Mackerel are King! Kings can be caught from the beach to 21 fathoms. Slow trolling live bait nearshore will produce large fish. If steady action is what you’re after its hard to beat the tried and true planner and spoon set up. I prefer a #3 planner and a silver drone spoon. Make your leader at least 30 ft. long with an inline barrel swivel

in the middle. This is a great way to introduce kids to fishing. It doesn’t hurt to pull a few surface baits as well, there will be a lot of Sailfish caught within 20 miles of the beach during the summer months. On the bottom, it is a literal smorgasbord of species that are available. Mangrove, Mutton, and Vermillion snapper are in full swing especially leading up to the full moon. Light tackle is the way to go when Snapper fishing. The best depths are 100 to 150 ft. if you’re after a Snapper dinner. Amberjack are literally everywhere from 80 to 180 ft. Large live baits or jigs work well on the reef donkeys. We will have a very brief Red Snapper opening on July 12 – 14; then again on July 19 and 20. The bag limit is 1 fish per person with no minimum size limit. There is a thermocline or cold water upwelling south of Cape Canaveral. Time will tell if we get the effects and the severity of the thermocline this far north. I suggest getting an early start. Pay attention to the afternoon thunder storms and wear plenty of sunscreen. Its hot out there!

Fishing Report & Forecast Flagler Inshore By Captain Chris Herrera

T

arpon are being targeted on our beaches and inshore waters all summer long. Along the beaches look for pogie pods with rolling and crashing Tarpon, approach by trolling motor and pitch a live pogie on the outskirts of the school, other alternatives is to fish the shrimp boats after they dump their by catch. For inshore Tarpon a live back hooked mullet or select shrimp with a Daiichi circle hook will do the job. Look for rolling Tarpon and pitch live mullet or shrimp a few feet in front and hold on. Best places to fish are residential canals, Matanzas Inlet or the Tomoka Basin for juvenile tarpon. Afternoon thunderstorms will normally trigger Tarpon feeding frenzies before the skies open up.

Kingfish will be on the near shore wrecks and beaches, slow trolling (1.5mph) a pogy will attract smoker kings. Look for bait pods in 3560ft. of water and troll around the bait for hook ups. Starting early in the morning or just before sunset is your best bet for the dog days of summer when targeting redfish on the flats. Toss your favorite topwater plug during low light conditions then switch to live or cut bait (lady fish, crab or mullet) and soak baits along grass banks that are holding bait or soak baits around oyster beds on the higher tides. Flounder are still targeted on the flats during higher tides and creeks during low tides with live mud minnows pinned on a jig head slowly bounced or dragged across the bottom. If you can’t make it to the shallows, pitch baits around docks closer to the inlet for flatties. Fish the last of outgoing and first of incoming tide at Matanzas inlet targeting deeper drop-off ledges, deep water rock/ hard bottom. Normally snook can be heard popping shrimp under the Palm Coast bridges or nearby docks but with past winters devastating cold spells the snook took a beating and we suffered massive fish kills. Try to practice catch, photo and release till our snook stocks can replenish themselves. Capt. Chris Herrera Serving Flagler Beach, Palm Coast, St. Augustine www.palmcoastfishing.com 386-503-6338

Fishing Report St. Johns River By: Richard Hamilton

T

his report will be kind of short, but packed with some good information. First up, the Shrimp have been small and in short supply. By the latter part of this month, if they're gong to be around, we'll notice some larger shrimp and a few more in each net cast. All you'll need is a good net, some chum, and a willingness to fight the crowds. So enjoy. Because of the increase of bait, i.e., shrimp, shad, finger mullet, the Tarpon are cruising around Doctors Lake. Fun to try and catch! And because of the increase in food, the Croaker and the Weak Fish are out and about. The small Croaker are eating the heck out of bait shrimp or worms. When you catch a small one and want some Weak Fish or perhaps a Red Fish, all you need to do is cut into a couple of strips and put it on and hold on.

Reds are all around eating everything they want. They're running shallows after small crabs and shrimp. Also, they'll bust up schools of bait fish and do their thing. Also eating on other swim baits, jigs, chatter baits and spinner baits. So get at it if you have a chance. Mullet fishing is still picking up. Because of all the changes in bottom structure, they run more than in the past, so patience and persistence is needed. Oh, and along with chum and bait. So have a go! Cat Fishing at night is a good idea, if you're so inclined. These whiskery fish love to come up in the shallows and eat the smaller fish and food that's available. All you'll need is a bath of night crawlers or a bit of bait shrimp and you've got a chance. So go to it. Next is LargeMouth Bass. They'll be under docks and off of points and deeper holes waiting to ambush the bait that's coming at them. Also, buzz baits, top water frogs and crank baits should be the ticket, so enjoy. Bream will be under docks, under pads and trying to bed this month. Fly rod poppers would work well. So do crickets, or a nice tasty gob of worm. You should be able to catch enough for a nice meal of 10 or 11. Then you can go in for the kill and enjoy the rush. So grab some and get at it. Well, like I said, short, but info packed. W"ell, 'til next time, keep your line wet and your lure movin'.--Richard

Sheep Dreamzzz F

lorida is a fisherman’s paradise due its extensive coastline and many lakes. Like Florida, Nicaragua is mostly surrounded by water. But what’s impacting Nicaraguans these days is what’s taking place more inland, as an increasingly repressive government tramples the rights of its own people, killing well over 300 in the past year and jailing many more for simply expressing disagreement with the socialist dictatorship. Thousands have fled the country, and the economy, which once showed promise, is in tatters, with much uncertainty as to what 2019 will bring. It is within this context that Sheep Not Goats began a new project in 2018 to train Nicaraguan women to make baby blankets that are sold in the US under the brand name Sheep Dreamzzz. The inspiration struck when the director of Sheep Not Goats, Sandy Jacoby of Saint Augustine, had her first two grandchildren and made them each a cute baby blanket with little sheep on it. People love them; they really are great blankets – handmade and of high quality. Now, one year later, the women in Nicaragua have become adept knitters and are branching out to new yarns and color combinations, including some universityinspired schemes. Just visit their site at www.sheepdreamzzz.org and you may see blankets related to UF, Miami, Georgia, and other schools. Here’s what makes Sheep Dreamzzz so special: the women who knit keep 100% of the “profit” from the blankets that they make. That’s

correct – 100%. So when you purchase a blanket you not only receive a cute and incredibly soft blanket, you are also putting a significant amount of money into the hands of a woman struggling to care for a family. Sheep Dreamzzz gives preference to women with the greatest needs, whether single moms or women whose husbands can’t find steady work (because there is none!). These women are finally able to feed their families, cover the dirt floors in their houses, and pay for medicines needed by their children. Not a dime of money received for a Sheep Dreamzzz blankets goes to pay staff. In fact, in the seven years that Steve and Sandy Jacoby have been working in Nicaragua, they have never taken any pay for their work. When you receive a Sheep Dreamzzz blanket, you will know who made it and have access to information about them so you can know who you helped. You also have the option to add a tax-deductible donation to help bring this work to more women. Sheep Dreamzzz baby blankets are truly a gift that gives back! They cost $59.95, all of which goes to the knitters after the cost of yarn and getting the blankets into the US. To see the blankets and learn more about Sheep Dreamzzz, visit www.sheepdreamzzz.org. Please follow them on Facebook or Instagram and share about this with all your friends who fish. Thank you! Editor’s Note: Sheep Not Goats is a Florida-based 501(c)(3) non-profit that is personally known to us and that does great work in Nicaragua, the poorest country in Central America. Florida Fisherman has provided this space to them free of charge so they can share about their work to empower women in Nicaragua through employment.

Florida Angler Achieves 50-Fish Milestone Allision Stattner’s big wahoo was the 50th species caught on her Saltwater Fish Life List.

A

llison Stattner is an accomplished angler. She has a pending 130.2-pound tarpon world record on fly and is featured in the new book “Fifty Women Who Fish.” Recently, she added another accomplishment to her list by becoming the first—and only—angler to join FWC’s 50-Fish Club. The milestone recognizes an astounding number of fish species Stattner has checked off in her Saltwater Fish Life List.

“Reaching the 50-Fish Club was definitely a fun challenge!” said Stattner. “I had to take into account seasonality, location within Florida, varied baits and, most importantly, log a lot of time on the water. Some of my catches were from the beach, pier, kayak and offshore headboats. Thank you to FWC and the sponsors of the Catch a Florida Memory program for recognizing angler accomplishments and encouraging me to be a better angler!” Stattner rounded out her Life List achievement with a whopping 42-inch wahoo as her 50th fish. She chose to memorialize the catch in a replica mount she’ll receive as a prize from Mount This! Fish Company. While her enthusiasm for spending time on the water is clear, she is equally passionate about teaching younger generations how to fish, including her own daughter who is a Life List 10-Fish Club member. Want to get in on the action? You can win a replica fish mount from Mount This! Fish Company when you submit catches by July 31 and are the first angler to qualify for the Reefs and Rubble Grand Slam (gag, gray triggerfish and black sea bass all caught in 24 hours) or the angler whose Reel Big Fish most exceeds its qualifying length. Plus, Catch a Florida Memory is teaming up with events like the Pensacola Fishing Rodeo and Lake Worth Lagoon Fishing Challenge to give you even more to chances to win. Grab your friends and family for some fishing fun, make some memories and win a few prizes while you’re at it. Catch a Florida Memory challenges anglers to target a diverse range of species in Florida, reducing pressure on the most commonly sought-after catches. Successful anglers receive a prize pack including a T-shirt, certificate and tumbler, and the prizes get hotter from there. Participate today by visiting CatchaFloridaMemory. com. Anglers do not have to harvest their fish to be eligible for prizes and are encouraged to use proper fish handling techniques. For information, visit CatchaFloridaMemory.com, email AnglerRecogntion@MyFWC.com or call (850) 487-0554.

By Capt. Tim Barefoot

don’t want to sound like I disapprove of harvesting fish, but we should all do our best to use fish as a sustainable form of entertainment and food. De-hookers and barbless or circle hooks minimize the time trauma for fish at boatside. I catch quite a few fish I want to release as healthy as possible due to size, creel limits and seasons, as well as fish that are heavy with roe. There are many ways to accomplish the release without ever touching the fish at all. A quality de-hooker with a T handle provides full control of the fish and hook when using barbless circle hooks. With quite a few species, dozens of fish are caught per trip, and being able to take care of the smaller fish helps those fish survive to sexual maturity. Hopefully they’ll have at least one successful spawn, which ensures the future fishery. There are other species like speckled trout that are effortless to release with a barbless jig hook. You can simply give trout slack line at the boat, and they will release themselves. Or just grab the jig head and barely push backward, allowing the trout to swim away without ever being touched. Too may times, I’ve seen young or uninformed anglers struggle with fish at boatside. It’s even worse when a fish intended for release is hooked deep with a barbed jig or J hook. I try to be courteous and inform the angler on how to use the de-hooker and/or barbless hooks in the future. Another way to reduce the possibility of deep hooking is to use more soft plastic baits. I’ve found that Gulp! baits work great with circle hooks, as well. Because they are impregnated with scent, fish tend to keep Gulp! baits in their mouths much longer than standard soft plastics. I’ve found that using Pro Cure Shrimp flavor on my soft plastic shrimp jigs has a similar effect. All fish have great senses of smell and taste, and a bag of soft plastic baits typically smells or tastes like… plastic. This is the reason Pro Cure Shrimp is a no-brainer. Everything in the water eats a shrimp. I typically keep a shrimp tied on the jig rod, and a shrimp on the cork rod. Speaking of smell and taste, if you smoke, consider how the smell of cigarettes on you hands affects the smell of the soft plastics you use. In closing, I’d like to encourage all the parents and role models out there to set a good example of how to properly release fish and how to use all the tools available to release fish as healthy as possible. Make your own videos to inform friends about how to accomplish this, or share some of my videos. To see my videos, go to www.barefootcatsandtackle.com. NEW RULES FOR SURF SHARKS

S

hore-based shark fishing is undergoing some changes in Florida. Effective July 1, FWC regulations changes are intended to increase survival of released sharks, improve information gathering for the fishery and address public safety concerns. The rule changes include: Photo • Creating a mandatory, nocourtesy cost, annual shore-based shark of Chris fishing permit. This permit is reBeardsley quired for all shore-based shark anglers age 16 and older, including those 65 and older who are normally exempt from needing a fishing license. • Requiring those under 16 to take the educational requirement associated with the permit unless they are fishing with an adult who already holds the permit. • Prohibiting chumming when fishing for any species from the beach. • Requiring immediate release of prohibited shark species when fishing from the shore. Anglers are required to cut the leader, line or hook to prevent delaying release of prohibited species. • Requiring that prohibited shark species remain in the water when fishing from shore or from a vessel. • Requiring the use of non-offset, non-stainless-steel circle hooks to target or harvest sharks when using live or dead natural bait when fishing from shore and from a vessel. • Requiring the possession/use of a device capable of quickly cutting the leader or hook when targeting sharks when fishing from shore or a vessel. • Defining beach, chumming and shore-based shark fisher. This includes changes to how shore-based shark fisher is defined.

Yamaha Jet Boat Manufacturing U.S.A. Inc., Vonore, TN FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT YAMAHA CENTER CONSOLE BOATS, VISIT WWW.YAMAHABOATS.COM.

Yamaha Goes Big With Their New 19-foot Center Console When Yamaha Boats entered the center console category in 2015 with their first gen 19-foot 190 FSH, skeptics questioned if Yamaha could compete in the segment in the same way the “Rev Your Heart” brand dominates the 19-foot, 21-foot, and 24-foot bowrider category. Just three years later, Yamaha clapped back by winning Boating Magazine’s coveted Boat of the Year honor with their 21-foot 210 FSH. For 2019, Yamaha upped the ante with a complete refresh of the 190 FSH Series. Yamaha’s 19’ center console boats return with an all-new deck and hull design that is 3 inches longer and 2 inches wider than previous year models. With the added space, Yamaha engineers increased storage capacity and improved overall functionality. From bow to stern, there is not another 19’ center console boat as spacious or more comfortable. Under the waterline, the longer, wider hull is designed for added comfort too, favoring characteristics that reduce bow rise when accelerating and hull packing when operating in choppy water conditions. Another significant improvement included on all Yamaha boats for 2019 is a new V-shaped reverse bucket that enhances handling when in reverse, a redesigned Articulating Keel that reduces drag, and a new compliment of corrosion resistance measures to protect the jet pump and surrounding driveline parts. The new V-Bucket works by diverting water thrust laterally (not down) to take advantage of the benefits of side thrust. The redesigned Articulating Keel is thinner and with tighter tolerances to reduce drag while maintaining all its low-speed handling benefits. And to increase corrosion resistance to the jet pump and surrounding driveline parts, a three-step process that combines Alumite, a ceramic coating, and expoxy paint has been added. Most Usable Deck Layout Ever in a 19’ Center Console Starting at the bow, the storage compartments are larger and open wider than

before. To help keep tackle and other essentials organized, Plano storage trays are integrated into the new portside mini-pod storage compartment, and on the starboard side, the mini pod opens into a huge storage area. These padded mini pods also serve as convenient ingress and egress points. The bow platform is wider than previous models, and the bow platform hatch is wider too, providing better access and more light for stowing or retrieving gear. The bench seat and front of the center console lifts up to reveal an extra deep, large storage area that can also serve as a changing room or head compartment, thanks to the curtain enclosure included on Deluxe and Sport models. The entryway to this compartment is redesigned to make ingress and egress easier. This compartment can also store equipment and recreational items and offers convenient access to the backside of the helm for easy service and installation of aftermarket marine electronics. On the sides of the center console are six vertical rod holders, three on each side. Four additional rod holders are located under the gunnels on the port and starboard sides. With the addition of four flush-mount rod holders on the deck, there are 14 rod holders across the boat. The Sport version adds four more rocket launchers on the T-top. The helm is thoughtfully designed with a simple-to-remove windshield for low profile storage, a stainless steel sports steering wheel, easy access to all boat control switches, a locking glove box and an open area to flush mount electronics such as a fishfinder, GPS unit, and other marine electronics. Also included is Yamaha’s 4.3” touchscreen Connext control system featuring a brand-new user interface in 2019, and conveniently-placed rocker switches for Yamaha’s No Wake Mode and Cruise Assist, along with bilge, horn and other vital functions.

FISH & FISHING

SINKER SENSE

MARK SOSIN

P

resentation holds the key to catching fish. That cardinal rule proves just as valid for critters that hunker down on the sea floor as it does for more glamorous denizens in the upper level of the water column. If a bait isn’t in the zone where the fish happen to be or if it doesn’t behave in a natural and realistic manner, it will be ignored. Sinkers are a vital aspect of fishing success. Their mission goes well beyond the task of simply dragging a bait to the bottom or some midpoint in the water column. View them as part of the total presentation package. That includes such factors as sink rate, whether it anchors a bait or allows it to drift, and as an aid in casting. If you’re going to troll, sinkers help to adjust the depth at which each bait or lure is moving through the water. With very few exceptions, select the lightest sinker that will carry your offering to the bottom or the desired depth. Don’t assume that if 1 ounce does the job, 2 ounces are better. Not only do heavier weights keep the bait or lure from looking like a tempting morsel, they make the hook-up process more difficult. Remember that when an unsuspecting fish inhales an offering, it must drag the sinker along before the hook will embed in its jaw. Line diameter plays a major role in determining the weight of the sinker you will need. Generally, the finer the diameter of the line you are using, the less weight you need to achieve the same results in a given situation. As an example, the bottom bouncer who insists on using 30-pound test line needs a heavier sinker than someone using 20-pound test. Sinker shape helps to determine sink rate. The fastest, freefalling sinkers have the weight concentrated at the bottom, tend to be very compact and are streamlined. It’s important to note, however, that fast-falling sinkers have a tendency to cause the

hook and tag end of the leader to wrap around the standing part during the drop. In most situations, it proves more effective if the sinker will drift across the bottom rather than anchor the rig in one place. If you’re trolling, sinker choice should include enough weight to keep the bait or lure at the preferred depth. No assortment of sinkers is complete without split shots, bullet weights, pinch-ons, and twist-ons. These can be added very easily to make minor adjustments to the weight of the primary sinker. Sinkers come in many different shapes, and each shape has a specific purpose. It’s important to choose a shape designed to do the job you expect. The right sinker for the task at hand will increase your catch rate significantly, and that’s the easiest way to turn an average day on the water into a memorable one.

he much -anticipated red snapper season in the south Atlantic waters of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida opens in July. Based on Photo courtesy of Miss Judy Charters, landings from www.missjudycharters.com last year’s six-day season, the limited opening has been cut to just five days for 2019. Anglers will be sure to have plenty of company on the reefs, as everyone scrambles to get in on their share of the action. The bag limit is one red snapper per person, per day, and captains and crews of for-hire vessels may retain the recreational bag limit. There is no minimum or maximum size limit. Harvest will be allowed on the following days: • July 12, 13 and 14 (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) – The recreational season opens at 12:01 a.m., local time, on July 12 and closes at 12:01 a.m., local time, on July 15. • July 19 and 20 (Friday and Saturday) – The recreational season opens again at 12:01 a.m., local time, on July 19 and closes at 12:01 a.m., local time, on July 21.

Reduce Mortality Of Released Bycatch

s responsible anglers, we want to do everything we can to return bycatch safely. Anyone who’s fished bottoms deeper than 30 feet has probably experienced the “floating fish syndrome.” This is caused by barotrauma, an expansion of the fish’s air bladder as they are brought up from depth. Signs of barotrauma include eyes popping, stomach extending out of the mouth, intestines extending out of the anus and bloating. These fish will not be able to descend upon release and are subject to predation. Thanks to a NOAA grant, the South Carolina Wildlife Federation has partnered with the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council to develop an interactive online tutorial detailing fish-handling and release techniques

that give fish the best chance of survival. In 2018, anglers fishing waters of the Atlantic from North Carolina to Florida released more than 2 million red snapper. Even a 5 percent increase in survivorship would save 100,000 red snapper a year. All those surviving fish would remain in the stock. The South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council includes bycatch mortality as part of their population estimates that determine seasons and catch limits. Best fishing practices detailed in the tutorial are a great way of reducing mortality, which means there will be more fish in the water for future fishing opportunities. Take the online tutorial and enhance your future fishing opportunities at: https://safmc. net/bestpracticestutorial/story_ html5.html. Complete the tutorial (about 20 minutes) and sign the pledge to be eligible for a free SeaQualizer descending device of you fish the South Atlantic.

MONSTER BROWN CAUGHT ON WHITE RIVER

Y

ou don’t see a brown trout like this one every day. This massive and battle-scarred bruiser was caught and released by Paden Flippen on Arkansas’ White River below Bull Shoals Dam on June 14. The 36.7-pound monster was a fitting present for the angler, who celebrated his 24th birthday that day. The White River is well known for producing gigantic trout. This system of hatchery-supported tailwaters has the food sources and habitat for rainbow, brown, brook and even cutthroat trout to reach almost unbelievable sizes. Flippin guides for Cotter Trout Dock and said he and other guides had been tracking this big brown for more than a year. If he had decided to keep it for certification, Flippen’s big trout would have fallen just shy of the state record, which is held by a 40-pound, 4-ounce beast that was caught from the Little Red River back in 1992. That fish, caught by Rip Collins, was the world record up until 2013, when an angler in New Zealand caught a 42-pound, 1-ounce brown trout.

FLY FISHING

DEXTER WHITE HANDLE FILLET KNIFE

FLY FISHING

FE

few inches until it can deliver the fly ever so softly. Always carry extra spools of leader material to meet this problem. Once again, your leader length is often determined by the fishing conditions. If the wind is howling and you are having a difficult time rolling over your fly, shorten the leader. If conditions are glass-slick, the fish will be spooky. You will need a much longer cast, so lengthen your leader and reduce the size and weight of your fly.

THE BASIC SALTWATER LEADER: THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT The leader is the connection between fisherman and fish. If tied incorrectly, not only will it be difficult to cast, it will also be responsible for losing saltwater gamefish. I prefer a 9-foot leader when fishing saltwater, although there are occasions when a 10-foot leader is needed. A good leader can turn over the large, heavy flies used in saltwater fly fishing. I will often start my day with a longer leader, and reduce its length depending on the demands of weather conditions and efficiency in properly delivering the fly. The leader is a simple equation: 4x3x2. I have found this the preferred method to construct a solid saltwater leader: • 4 feet of 40-pound stiff mono; • 3 feet of 30-pound mono, and • 2 feet of 20-pound mono. This system works well with lighter tippets as well. If I need to add a lighter tippet, I shorten the heavy 40-pound butt section to keep the overall leader length 9 feet, adding the light tippet to the 20-pound test on the fly end of the leader. How the fly lands on the water is important. You want the fly to land as softly as a whisper. If, however, your leader is too long, a heavy fly will hit the water as loudly as a thrown rock. The noise will alert every fish in the vicinity. I usually solve this problem by shortening the leader and cutting off a

There are times when a shorter leader is needed. The short leader makes it easier to cast a heavy fly into the wind. I will often shorten leaders to fewer than 7 feet when dealing with very strong winds. It’s good to remember that shallow-water fish are less spooky under windy conditions. Therefore, they will often swim within close range of the angler without being spooked. I believe the wind and the distortion it creates on the water’s surface acts as a barrier to the world above the surface, making the fish feel more secure. I’ve witnessed this on many occasions when tarpon, redfish and permit swim within a rod’s length of me while the wind was blowing 20 knots.

BOJO FISHLIGHT

T

he BoJo Fishlight is no ordinary fishlight. The unique design feeds your fish by actually knocking bugs into the water… still alive! The unit has two fluorescent bulbs that attract bugs to the device. Once bugs come to the light, an electric motor with weed-eatertype cord blades knocks the bugs into the water where fish eat them all night long. The Bo-Jo Fishlight works great on fresh or saltwater, on ocean docks, large lakes and equally well—if not better—on small ponds. Basic fishing rules apply

here. Bugs come to the light; bugs get knocked in the water; baitfish feed on bugs; big fish feed on baitfish; you catch the big fish! The device mounts on a post, dock, pier or boat house and is simple to install. These durable dock lights also give you illumination to enjoy nighttime activities and cost less than a nickel a night to operate. This incredible device feeds fish for free and will actually pay for itself in the first year alone. Compare with the cost of expensive mechanical fish feeders that spread pellet feed, and you’ll save big money. Learn more at bo-jofishlight. com or call 478-951-1490.
