TIPS FROM A PRO

NORTH CAROLINA

BRANDON LESTER

hen water temperatures dip into the 50s, I like to take a few days to leave my bass fishing gear at home and go crappie fishing. Most folks equate crappie with spring, but I’m here to tell you the winter bite is as good as it gets. Not only do crappie taste better when you pull them from cold water, they seem to run larger than they do when they’re up on the banks in the spring. And when you find them piled up, it can lead to a cooler full very quickly. Crappie stack up in large schools this time of year. If you know what to look for, it’s not hard to catch them. Finding good cover is always the ticket when it comes to crappie, and this is especially true during the winter months. On many reservoirs, boat docks are prime crappie cover. It seems like there are a few magic docks that always hold fish, and I also like to hunt them down with my Raymarine electronics. With the SideVision mode, it’s just a matter of idling around potential holding water and looking for them. They will be in big winter schools, so I might cruise past 50 docks before hitting on the mother lode. Once I see them on the SideVision, I’ll drop an Aqua Vu camera down to make sure they are crappie and see how big they are. I’m looking for depths of at least 20 feet beneath a dock. For obvious reasons, these deep-water docks are floating docks, and that’s something you can look out for. I have found them around docks with 60 feet of water under them, and the fish will be suspended 8 to 15 feet from the surface. If your lake or river has mostly fixed position docks with poles, crappie will get on them as well. The best way to narrow the search on

permanent docks is to look for the ones right on the edge of a creek or river channel. With a good map card like Navionics platinum these places are easy to find. If you can find a dock that has a little brush on it, you can almost bet there will be crappie around. Once you find crappie, cast exactly where they are or just beyond. Winter crappie have a very small strike zone. Count your bait down to the desired depth, and reel just fast enough to maintain that

enhaden are one of the most important baitfish on the Atlantic coast. Bunker, as menhaden are commonly called, are thin when looked at from the top but very wide from the side. Small bunker, referred to as peanut bunker, are easy to mimic with Flat Wings, Hi-Ties or any number of specialized patterns. Flies that represent big bunker, however, pose challenges. Think of casting a wet mop head, and you’ll get the idea. The other problem is that flies compress when stripped through the water. A fly with a wide profile on the tying vise can end up looking like a strand of spaghetti in the water. Capt. Chris Newsome grew up fishing the lower Chesapeake Bay in Virginia, where bunker make up as much as 80 percent of striped bass diets. As a fly fishing guide, Chris needed to come up with a large bunker fly that was easy to cast and kept its wide profile. The idea of how to accomplish this came to him one night when he was woken up by his crying young daughter. Instead of tying bucktail and saddle hackles directly on the hook, Chris thought to tie the material onto small pieces of wire, which would then be tied onto the hook. Since the fly is made up with a relatively small amount of material, it’s easy to cast. The angle of the wires ensures the fly keeps its wide profile in the water. The fly has been very effective for stripers and can be used for any gamefish that feeds on wide-profile baitfish.

Wired Bunker Fly

depth. My favorite jig head is a 1/32-oz. ball-shaped jig head with a good sharp Mustad hook, but I will go up to a 1/16 oz. if the wind is blowing or I’m fishing deeper than normal. The natural bait is going to be larger this time of year, so soft-plastic minnow imitations in the 2-inch range with a straight tail will work. I use a S721 MHX rod built with supplies from Mud Hole Custom Tackle, including a Winn grip. It is 6 feet long, super-sensitive, and has the perfect action for controlling small baits. I team it with a 1,000-size spinning reel and 4-pound Vicious Panfish line in fluorescent green. The green line helps detect light strikes.

Hook – Tiemco 600SP, size 2/0 to 6/0 Thread – Danville flat waxed nylon, 210 denier Wire – Malin Hard Wire, size 1/0 Tail – bucktail topped by four saddle hackles tied flat Wing – four saddle hackles surrounded by bucktail tied onto ½-inch wire pieces Belly – long, thin bunches of bucktail tied onto ½-inch wire pieces Eyes – 3-D prismatic, 3/8” to 3/4” Glue – Beacon 527 Place a piece of wire in the vise and tie a thin bunch of bucktail onto it. Make several of these units. Next, tie several components made up of four saddle hackles surrounded by bucktail onto pieces of wire. Flashabou can be tied onto each component. Begin by tying a thin amount of bucktail topped by four saddle hackles tied flat onto the back of the hook. Move the thread up the shank and tie a wing component (one with hackles) on top of the hook and a belly component (one with just bucktail) on the bottom of the shank. Keep moving the thread up the hook shank and tie at least two more wing and two more belly units. Bend the wire pieces until satisfied with the fly’s profile. Glue each tie-in point, and finish by gluing eyes onto the sides of the fly. Contact Capt. Chris Newsome at 804-815-4895 or chris@bayflyfishing.com. Check out his website BayFlyFishing.com. Atlantic Marine Supply

PUBLISHER & EDITOR

JOHN TIGER LAURA TIGER Co-publishers & Editors

CONTRIBUTING WRITERS This month, we focus on an established business with a new look—Atlantic Marine Supply in Yorktown, now with two locations to serve customers. The original location is service only, where founder, entrepreneur, owner (and proud Navy vet) Bill Every started the business. Just off the beaten path of Rt. 17 (on the north side of the highway, across from Dodd RV Sales) at 337 Redoubt Road, this spic-and-span full service Honda outboard dealership and service/repower center reflects Every’s can-do attitude and spirit. The squeaky-clean and organized, professional shop shows his military background and precision approach; customers can expect the highest level of outboard service. This Spring, Every realized another milestone in his dream, as he opened a brand-new full-scale parts and accessories store just south of his service facility— again, just off Rt. 17 in Grafton, on the south side of the highway this time, at 441 Grafton Drive. You have to look a bit to find the store, as it’s just barely visible from the highway—and if you wait to see the signs, you will likely pass it. Every’s new store features a huge stock of Honda outboard parts as well as service parts for most any outboard; if you need spark plugs, a water pump service kit, fuel line, fuel tank, propeller, or fiberglass and paint supplies—Every has it, or can get it within a day or so. The store features a full line of Grundens fishing and foul-weather gear, as well as a huge selection of boating, trailering and fishing supplies and accessories. Customer reviews so far have been excellent; Every really researched his store stock, layout and selection to ensure that customers would be able to get what they need. Coastal Angler readers take note— the holidays are fast approaching, and surely you have a boater or angler who would appreciate something from Atlantic Marine Supply!

This is the recipe that Mike cooked up after our great day of trout fishing. It is simple, but delicious. First filet and clean your trout. (TIP - Mike says do not use fresh water, pat them dry with paper towels). Coat the filets in egg wash, throw ‘em in a large bag of flour, and let them coat and rest. Heat your cast iron skillet to 350, and just before you put the fish in the hot oil bath, take them out and coat them with panko. Then immediately place the fish in the oil. The reason is to wait to put the panko on is because it keeps the panko very crisp. Great recipe and defiantly try this at home. Holiday Tip: DropIt! If you are like me and enjoy a glass of wine during the holidays but don’t enjoy the effects of sulfites, do what I do and use “DropIt”. Only a few drops in your glass will reduce the effects of tannins and sulfites from drinking wine. DropIt also does not change the flavor of your favorite wine. A must for our household! This is a great product and I highly recommend it. For more info log on to www. dropitwine.com or call 757-364-2615 CHEERS!

What a pleasure it was to recently head down to Aurora North Carolina and film some speckled trout fishing with Michael Collins from Tideline Boats. This was a shoot that almost did not happen. The show boat we film was booked for the next month for various reasons and we only had a two day window to film. However, those two days were shrouded by a big front that was soon to be blanketing our fishing area for at least two or three days. What to do? I have been in this situation many times over the past 30 years and it is always a toss-up. If we did not go, we would totally miss our opportunity for a shot at a trout show. So, we packed up and headed south to catch up with Michael Collins of Tideline Boats who fancies himself a bit of a trout fisherman, and with good reason. Mike has that certain way of working a mirror lure to where he will catch ten fish while I am still trying to get the skunk out of my spot on the boat. We were fishing in pretty solid rain for the most part and the areas we covered were Campbell’s creek, the Inland Waterway, and some of the Pamlico Sound. The baits used were primarily mirror lures fished quite slow. I also tried a jig, however all I would get were short strikes with no hook ups. The mirror lures fished patiently with a simple jerk action after three or four cranks seemed to be the ticket. I guess I did not pay enough for my ticket because I just could not get the rhythm right. Fortunately my fishing partner for the day had it down pat and we had fish in the boat all day and into the evening. Water depth was usually four to eight feet and we were casting towards the shoreline. Most of the fish were caught near shore. As the night fell with a blanket of rain and low visibility, I finally hooked into a wonderful Keeper! It was worth all the casts I had made throughout the day. Mike had already limited out and we released a mess of fish unharmed. lthough the weather can be an aggravation this time of year, anglers are hopeful for smooth sailing into the New Year.

Rudee, and Little Creek Inlets leading the way. Using a slower retrieve with lures or plastics is more effective for enticing strikes in the colder water. The Elizabeth River is also producing trout, but the size and numbers are unpredictable as the fishery continues to recover. Some nice puppy drum can offer some variety from these same areas.

Rockfish are always on angler’s minds as the winter season approaches. But it’s hard to say how the rockfish bite will ultimately evolve this year as the schools of really big fish filter into the lower Chesapeake Bay. So far, the pattern is reminiscent of last winter’s trend for these hefty fish, stalling several miles short of their more accessible haunts along the Eastern Shore. For those willing to make the run to wherever the striped bass may migrate in the bay, the results can be rewarding, with many of these fish weighing in excess of 50-pounds. The best method for targeting these larger rockfish is with live eels while drifting or slow-trolling.

When anglers find a break in the weather, boats will head for the edge of the Norfolk Canyon where good hauls of big blueline tilefish and grouper are available. Chopper bluefish and jumbo seabass are also a by-catch in these same deep areas, but dog fish will soon begin to overshadow most fishing efforts for deep droppers as the water temperatures drop.

Tautog will continue to hit on most lower Chesapeake Bay wrecks and along the structure of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel through December, with the average size tog ranging around 3 to 6-pounds. Nice tautog will also begin to respond on more coastal and offshore wrecks as the waters continue to cool. Boats will also take advantage of the seabass action on these same deeper structures before the season closes at the end of the year. The current regulations allow you to keep 15 seabass per person stretching to at least 12.5-inches. Flounder, trigger fish, and chopper bluefish are also a possibility on many of these same wrecks. This is also the time of year folks are on the lookout for schools bluefin tuna, which can show up most anywhere from a few yards off of the beach, out to the Triangle Wreck area. The local speckled trout bite has been commendable this season, with the average speck size pushing to around 22-inches, with several gator-sized fish stretching from 27 to 30-inches already making a surprisingly good showing. Most any backwater protected area will offer respectable fish, with Lynnhaven,

Christmas came early in August of this year for the Outer Banks Anglers Club Artificial Reef Committee. The NC Marine Fisheries awarded the group a grant from the NC Coastal Resources Fishing License Fund in the firstyear amount of $371,000 to create a new reef near Oregon Inlet. This was a hard-fought battle to establish a new reef led by retired NC Superior Court Judge Richard J. Parker. Judge Parker, along with fellow Outer Banks Angler Club member Brian Forbes, worked tirelessly to secure a funding source to make this dream a reality. The OBX Anglers Club is a local fishing club that works to promote fishing resources and opportunities in the Outer Banks area. The club wanted to expand their efforts in establishing more fishing opportunities for its members and visitors to the OBX. The club created an Artificial Reef Committee within the club to study and plan the feasibility of creating a new artificial reef to serve the Oregon Inlet area. The Committee worked hand in hand with NC Marine Fisheries to establish the new reef and applied for a grant to make this dream a reality. The NC Artificial Reef Program is administered by NCDMF, and currently there are 42 artificial reefs in NC divided into four regions. The regions are Long Bay (SC Line to Cape Fear), Onslow Bay (Cape Fear to Cape Lookout), Raleigh Bay (Cape Lookout to Cape Hatteras) and OBX (Cape Hatteras to VA Line). The breakdown of artificial reefs in each area break down as follows: Long Bay with 9, Onslow Bay with 22, Raleigh Bay with 7 and the OBX with 4. As you can see, the OBX and the Hatteras regions were being underserved even though Dare County sends over a million dollars a year to Raleigh through sales of the Coastal Fishing License fees. Fishing is a big business in Dare County with millions of dollars generated through not only recreational fishing but also commercial fishing. With thousands of charter and recreational fishermen fishing the area, you can see that our area of the state was not being served fairly by having access to only four artificial reefs. NCDMF and other state elected officials also recognized this. The four existing artificial reefs are being enhanced with new materials from the demolition of the Herbert Bonner Bridge after the new bridge is completed. These reef enhancements, along with the newly created reef, will benefit the fishermen who fish the areas out of Oregon Inlet. We are fortunate that fellow fishermen like Judge Richard Parker and the OBXAC worked hard to secure the new reef to help promote fishing to our resident and visiting fishermen in the Outer Banks area. Currently the club is hoping to continue this important work and add even more reefs to the area. To learn more, visit their website at http://www.outerbanksanglersclub.com/ and donate or join the club to help make this project a success. The OBXAC Artificial Reef Committee is a Non-Profit Tax Exempt 501(c)7 Organization and all donations are tax deductible.

KAYAK FISHING: NEW COLUMNIST By Bryant Franklin

Fall is in full swing, the colder weather is upon us and striper season about to start; we’re excited around the Chesapeake Bay area. I will miss chasing the big blue cats on the James River, but it’s time for rockfish Season. I must really stress (yes I know, kayak anglers are tired of hearing it), the number one killer-Hypothermia. Yes I said it, that’s when your body temperature drops below 95 degrees. I am not the person who wears a PFD in the summer and I take that risk on myself, but when the water gets below 60 my PFD goes on and when the water gets below 55 I bring out and wear my winter gear. The real danger of cold water comes long before hypothermia, however; the cold shock hits first and your body is drastically trying to figure out how to warm itself up. Panic sets in, and the first thing to try to remember is to calm down then collect yourself mentally. Flip your kayak over, pull yourself across it’s hull, and climb back in. Get to shore as fast as you can. Body movement is important, as it generates heat. Don’t be ashamed to ask for help! It could save your life, and without the proper gear you stand a good chance of not

8 TIDEWATER & THE OUTER BANKS

making it. While they are expensive, a dry suit is the best protection you can buy. If that’s out of your price range, at least buy some good chest waders that you can layer underneath a dry shell jacket. Wear a belt around the top of the waders, and most important a PFD that will keep you high in the water. I know some of you are saying “I’ve never flipped a kayak, and I’m careful”. I too used to say that but we lost a Navy Seal last year when he flipped his yak and the water took him. I am tired of hearing on the news or reading about that we lost another kayak angler due to not wearing the proper gear. Appomattox River Company and the Tidewater Kayak Anglers Association team up to host a clinic every November; check out their websites or Facebook pages for the exact date. Christmas is this month; maybe you or your favorite angler needs a new lifejacket to replace that old raggedy PFD you’ve been wearing. Put it on your Christmas list—your kids want you around for next Christmas! Let’s have a good and safe rockfish season, a great Holiday Season, and tight lines

HOLIDAY SHOPPING By Mike Buss

M

erry Christmas! It’s Christmas time and there are just a few shopping days before the big day so let’s go shopping for that special fly fisherman or woman. Fly fishers are always looking to add some new gadget or tool to their collection, so these items make great stocking-stuffers as most of these items are rather inexpensive. One idea is a fly reel zinger, a metal retractor that looks like a fly reel and has a couple of split rings on each end that can be attached to tools and then to a loop on a fly vest. Also, fishing pliers are always in demand if your angler fishes in saltwater, as they tend to rust. Fly boxes are always needed as we are always expanding our fly inventory by purchasing new flies or tying a new pattern. A tippet spool holder is something that will hold spools of tippet material is always needed. Nippers and knotting tools are also some things that are used all the time and are lost from time to time and need replacing. If your fly fisher spends a lot of time wade fishing then you have a lot of additional items to choose from. A new wading staff would always be welcome as well as a new fly vest to replace the tattered one they are probably using that is almost as old as they are. A striping basket is a necessary tool and would make a nice present. A wader bag that holds the waders, boots, and gear and keeps it all from getting the truck messy on the way home would also be welcome. A boat owner is always looking to replace something on the boat. Ask them if they could use something for the boat. Or just go to your local Boaters World and ask their knowledgeable staff what would make a good Christmas present. Of course, all fly fishers can always use more flies, a new fly line, leader material, or if you really want to go overboard, a new rod and reel. Probably the best way to go about all of this is to ask your fly fisher where he or she shops for fly fishing stuff and then get a catalog from there and have them circle items they would like. Then all you need to do is get the catalog back and go through it and make your selections if you want to make the selections yourself. You can always get a gift certificate and let your special person make their own selections. Books and CDs also make very good gifts as do decorated coffee mugs and glasses. Bandanas and fishing shirts and pants also are welcome. In fact, there are so many items that it would be difficult to list them all, but I hope I have given you a few ideas to get you started. Probably the best policy would just be to ask what they need or would like and go from there. Merry Christmas and Tight lines to all!

Between shopping and Christmas parties, this month goes by way too quickly. I can remember some great memories of taking a couple of the kids rock fishing for a morning or evening trip over their holiday break from school. I don’t remember how Jake Worthington many fish we caught, or if we even landed one on every trip. What I do remember is little kids excited to splash around for a few hours riding the waves in the anchor locker. I remember fishing until fingers got cold and heading into the fishing center to get warm hot chocolate. Take the time this busy month to slow it down a bit and enjoy the real things in life. Fishing options are striped bass, big bluefish, dogsharks, speckled trout, and drum. Striped bass fit the bill for the most targeted. Manns Harbor seems to be the perennial winner. Umbrella rigs, jigs, stretch swimming plugs, and rattletraps seem to be dangling off rod tips most days. Try fishing mornings or evenings, along with some current to increase your odds. Fish have shown better this fall compared to the last few winters. There have been fish ranging from 16-28 inches. Good luck and enjoy the Holidays and go make some great memories. FISH & FISHING

f it weren’t for the East Fork of the French Broad, it’d be easy to say public access to trout water on private property was a thing of the past. This medium to large flow runs roadside and is hemmed in by private holdings, yet it is one of North Carolina’s most popular delayed harvest streams. It draws anglers from North Carolina and from across the nearby borders with South Carolina and Georgia because it is heavily stocked and offers easy access to easy wading. Somehow, someone convinced property owners along East Fork Road southeast of Rosman, N.C. to allow anglers to fish the creek. There are small signs that read “Public Access For Fishing Only” and remind anglers to respect the access landowners have generously provided. Those are signs a lot of us would like to see a lot more of, but slobs tend to ruin such things. The East Fork French Broad is a shining example of

B

ait fishing tends to breed a passive attitude, because most anglers believe they only have to put a bait in the water and wait for results. The serious bait fisherman is aggressive. Catching fish demands work whether you choose to present an artificial lure or a natural bait. Successful anglers vary their technique constantly, rarely remaining glued to a single method. To catch fish on bait, the key lies in getting your offering where your quarry can sense it. Fish feed either by probing for food or waiting in one spot where the food will come to them. The more you know about the species you seek and the way it feeds, the easier it is to choose the right bait and present it effectively. Start with the most common bait your target species feeds on at that time of year, and load up with a couple additional types just in case.

MARK SOSIN You want the freshest bait available, and it is important to change it frequently so it gives off a strong smell and stays lively. Once you select the bait, presentation becomes key. With live bait, you want it to swim and thrash. Hook it either in the lips or in front of the dorsal fin. Be sure to use a small enough hook so the bait can move about easily. If you want a live bait to swim toward the bottom, hook it behind the dorsal fin. The basic rule of bottom fishing is to use the lightest sinker that will take your bait to the bottom. Lighter sinkers allow the bait a more natural action. There’s an important difference between waiting for something to happen and making it happen. The successful bait fisherman works continuously to make something happen.

what can be achieved with strict management and landowner cooperation. This creek, where it runs through a rural setting of valley farms and fields, is typical of a lower elevation trout stream, with long slow runs, big bend pools and extended stretches of shallow riffles. There are also three significant sets of cascading falls with large holes at their bases. Easy access and easy wading in pretty water kept brimming trout does not go unnoticed. On weekdays or in nasty weather, it might be possible to have stretches of the creek to yourself, but count on sharing water during the October into June delayed harvest season. The standard colorful and flashy DH flies would suffice to fish this creek with a 4- or 5-weight. But the trout see a lot of flies. This means they sometimes reward anglers who fish something natural, like caddis, quills and other mayflies that come off in spring. And don’t hesitate to try something completely outlandish. There are some larger fish in the creek, and big Western flies sometimes get noticed by trout that aren’t quite sure what they’re supposed to be eating. There are about 5 miles of water managed as delayed harvest from Glady Fork down to the confluence that forms the French Broad proper. Not all of this is accessible to the public. East Fork Road runs east off of U.S. 178 south of Rosman. East Fork Road crosses the Middle Fork of the French Broad and then the East Fork. Public access begins at this first bridge over the East Fork and continues upstream. There are, however, several posted parcels within this stretch that should be avoided. Just get in the vehicle and find another pullout like the one marked by this GPS waypoint: 35.133958, -82.794207. There is plenty of river that is not posted. For GPS coordinates to access points and detailed maps of all North Carolina’s and Georgia’s best trout water, check out “Flyfishers Guide to North Carolina & Georgia.” It is available at fly shops, on Amazon, and signed copies are available from the author by emailing nsc8957@ gmail.com.

here are several factors that cause cold numb feet during winter fishing. Lack of insulation layers and quality, too many socks causing constriction of blood flow, the wrong size footwear for winter application, and often overlooked, the proper ‘installation’ method of putting those items on in such a way that even the best gear can cause poor circulation. First, tight over-the-calf socks constrict blood flow. “Half-fold” the tops down the lower shin to allow better circulation. Secondly, pick footwear sizes for winter fishing and hunting that will give plenty of room for sock layers (and neoprene wader boot bottoms). Thirdly, use high quality merino wool sock layers with good loft. I’ve recently found Fits Brand socks (fitssock.com) and they contain a higher percentage merino wool than the competition, and they’re manufacturing process creates more loft. Loft equates to insulation. Use one liner sock like the Fits ‘Film’ liner and one thick merino wool sock. Finally, don’t hurriedly cram your feet into the boots. Make sure to bend your toes back and forth after putting on sock layers. Similarly, after the boots are on, walk around and bend the toe sections of the boots to loosen scrunched-up materials and layers inside the boots before lacing up. Following these simple steps will give your feet more blood flow and allow your feet to stay warmer longer. Tobin created TroutSupport.com - Tech Support for speckled trout and redfish anglers.

EXPERT ADVICE

Gifts for Anglers Choosing Sunglasses As A Gift DAVID MANEY, FOWLER’S SUNGLASSES

C

hoosing a pair of sunglasses as a gift for someone else can be a tricky endeavor. On the one hand you have your opinion of what you think they will like and then there’s the issue of the fit and their face shape that can make all the difference in the world in their overall happiness with the pair that you’ve selected. Obviously, the best way to ensure your selection is exactly what they’re looking for is to have them help you. Go to your favorite sunglass seller, and let your friend try numerous pairs on. Then, once you know their favorite, the task is easy and foolproof. But if you’re not able to put that together prior to a purchase, the next best alternative is to make sure the company you’re buying the sunglasses from has an honest, no-loophole return policy. Yes, save your receipt. I also recommend including a small note with the sunglasses saying: I hope these fit, and are what you wanted. The store name here said you can exchange them if you like. At Fowler’s, we make sure our customers have an easy and helpful exchange process. The right pair of sunglasses can be a gift that is appreciated for many, many years, and we make giving the perfect gift a little bit easier. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT XTRATUF LEGACY 2.0 Engineered to withstand the world’s toughest conditions, the Legacy 2.0 is a hardcore fishing boot 50 years in the making. The latest addition to XTRATUF’s iconic legacy collection features an advanced new outsole that surpasses the SRC slip resistance rating, a textured heel for easy on/off that won’t get caught in gill nets, and a contoured topline binding so it does not rub harshly against calves. Acid- and chemical-resistant uppers along with shin and bib guards keep fishermen protected while a Polyurethane insole ensures comfort for long days on deck. All boots within the Legacy collection are 100 percent waterproof with unique performance features. Each boot is made with XTRATUF’s signature triple dipping technique, which creates a seamless barrier that is highly resistant to many organic and inorganic acids, chemicals and contaminants. The latex neoprene is ozone resistant and is softer, lighter and far more pliable than ordinary rubber. Cushioned insoles with arch support help fight fatigue and stress on the legs and back. All XTRATUF Legacy boots come with a non-marking, slip-resistant Chevron outsole that provides unparalleled traction on any surface in the most extreme conditions.
