hile mystic grouper can be caught year-round in the Bahamas, the winter months are our favorite time of year. Whenever a weather window presents itself, we point our bow east across the Florida Straights in search of these deep-water bottom dwellers. Mystics are one of the lesser-known grouper species, simply because anglers don’t fish deep enough to target them. Like all grouper, they are excellent to eat and usually weigh from 15 to 50 pounds, although they can grow much larger. It takes special gear to fish the 800- to 1,200-foot depths where we find mystics. Armed with Shimano Tiagra 80 WAs and Shimano Tiagra 50 WAs equipped with Hooker Electric Autostop drives, we string up 65- to 100-pound Power Pro braid on Crafty One Custom’s Deep Drop Rods. We begin by paying close attention to our Humminbird Solix sonar with CHIRP HD digital technology to locate bottom structure. We look for cones, holes, drop-offs, ledges and deep-water ridges. Once viable structure is located, we position the boat above it with engines out of gear to judge how wind and current will manipulate our drift. Then the
boat is repositioned up-current from the structure and the deep-drop rigs are readied. When targeting mystics, we use our www.ThreeBuoysFishing.com grouper deep-drop rigs made with three 8/0 VMC 3x Circle Hooks on 100-pound branch lines off of 12 feet of 150-pound main line. For bait, we prefer fresh-cut 8-inch strips of dolphin, tuna, wahoo or barracuda. Many deep-drop anglers claim, “no light, no bite,” but our experience has proven that, especially with mystics, we catch more and bigger fish without lights. We deploy two rods on opposite sides of the boat. Lead weights in the 10-pound range are the rule of thumb, but weight can be adjusted to the current. After the weights hit bottom, the reels are left in freespool to lay the rigs straight down on the bottom. The engines should be used to decrease the boat’s drift to a standstill, if possible. If the boat drifts, let out line to keep the rigs on bottom. When the rod tip bumps and shakes, resist the urge to lock up the drag and retrieve line. Wait a minute or two for additional fish to sense the commotion. They’ll often eat the remaining baits. When it’s time to strike, lift the reel’s drag to strike (pre-set to 20 pounds of drag) and slowly start your retrieve. Big mystic grouper put up quite a fight at first, and you might even think you’ve hung bottom. Be patient and slowly gain as must line as possible. When fish are about halfway up, their air bladders expand and create lift. They will begin to float your rig up to the surface. For more tips and tactics on deep-dropping and the tackle and rigs to get tight, see www.threebuoysfishing.com. Finding bait becomes more important than at any other time of year. Goebel likes to get out well before dawn in search of shad or herring flickering near the surface, especially when a big moon keeps baitfish active all night. Diving birds are also a dead giveaway. They are likely feeding on baitfish pushed by stripers from below. “A lot of times if there’s bait there, I won’t even worry about marking fish on the graph,” Goebel said. “I’ll just put out my lines and start fishing where the bait is.”

here aren’t many anglers willing to endure the frigid early morning temperatures of winter on a large reservoir. But for those who can handle a little discomfort, right now is the best time of year to hook up with the striper of a lifetime. Around the Southeast, in reservoirs where striped bass were introduced, falling water temperatures spur changes in behavior that make the largest fish in the lake susceptible to anglers. Those 30- to 50-pounders are feeding up right now. They’re storing up reserves that will take them through the spring spawn. “It’s trophy striper season,” said Shane Goebel, of Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service. “The bigger fish are participating a little better. This time of year, we start going after those big ol’ hogs that are chasing the big baits.” The large summer schools broke up months ago. Stripers are spread out and on the move, following baitfish into the creek mouths and up into the backs of the creeks. Big fish move shallow when water temps hit the mid to low 50s on the lakes Goebel guides in the mountains of north Georgia and western North Carolina. It might take some searching to find them, but the rewards can be huge.
Because the stripers are continually moving with the bait, covering water is crucial. Goebel said to troll as many baits in as wide a spread as you can handle. Herring are great on lakes where they are present, but this time of year you should also work some big gizzard shad or trout into the spread. Sometimes it takes a big mouthful to convince big fish to eat. Goebel runs baits 30 to 40 feet behind planer boards. He’ll drop freelines 100 to 150 feet behind the boat. If the area where he finds bait isn’t too shallow, he’ll put a little bit of weight ahead of the baits on the inside boards to cover more water vertically. He slow trolls at about half a mile per hour. This is a pattern Goebel fishes all the way into May, when stripers have moved into a pre-spawn phase. It might not produce the numbers of fish that downlining into summer mega-schools will, but the fish are generally a lot bigger than those 5- to 10-pound summer schoolies. If catching an enormous striper sounds like fun, zip up your parka and get out on the lake. It’s trophy striper season. Check out Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service at bigolfish.com.

f Costa Rica isn’t already on your bucket list, it should be. Famous for both inshore and offshore fishing, it’s also a country with incredible biodiversity and exciting eco-tourism opportunities. In short, there’s something for every sportsman and adventure seeker here. From a fishing perspective, the west coast of this Central American country is most favored with several significant cities and ports including Jaco, Quepos and, of course, Golfito. It’s Los Suenos, however, where
my wife, Felicia and I found outstanding action on a trip last April. We worked the inshore grounds, catching huge roosterfish, rainbow runners, grouper, jacks and even mahi. We also decked a big cubera snapper. Of course, we did have an edge. Coastal Angler’s very own Costa Rica inshore reporter Capt. Carlos Arguedas and his first-mate son, Christopher, were our charter crew. “This really is a terrific place to fish,” said Arguedas, “We have access to a lot of different spots ranging from very close to the marina to 50 miles away. The roosterfish action is unbelievable here but we also catch big cubera snapper, amberjack, groupers and huge red snappers, too.” Arguedas loves to take clients for roosterfish because they fight so hard, are found close to port, and grow big. He’s had a 90-pounder grace his deck. For these, he’ll slow troll live baits like blue runners, herring, sardines or bonita. All of these baits, impaled on size 8 circle hooks, also attract other large predators; so you never know what to expect when the rod doubles over. “Roosterfish are very impressive when you first see them,” said Arguedas. “They are exotic-looking with big dorsal rays, a huge mouth and striped flanks. They are stunning to see for the first time. They are also exceptionally strong. Fight a 20-pounder and you’ll think you have a 40-pounder at the end of the line. They jump, too, and shake their head, so remember to lower your rod tip when that fish comes up or you’ll tear the hook free.” Among the other big fish that hit the deck for Arguedas’ crew on a regular basis are goliath grouper that can top 400 pounds. These are targeted around local reefs. If you want to run offshore, sailfish, tuna and marlin abound within 10 miles of port. Dorado, sometimes topping 30 pounds, can be tempted within sight of the coast. Costa Rica’s tropical climate makes it a year-round destination. Most travelers prefer to visit during the dry season, which runs from December through April, but you’ll find lighter crowds and lower travel prices during the “green” or rainy season from May to November. Whenever you visit, it really helps to work with a travel pro that deals frequently with Costa Rica to customize a trip here. Blue Water Sportfishing Charters (http://bluewatersportfishingcharters.com) specializes in setting up trips to Los Suenos. They can put you in the right place at the right time for the fish you want to catch, sights you want to see or adventures you want to experience. They’ll also book you with Capt. Carlos—or you can contact him yourself at www.wingmancr.com.

he first time I saw someone spearfishing, I was intrigued and wondered out loud how hard it would be to load a speargun. A friend heard me and said, “I’m sure you can do it. It’s probably more about technique than brute strength.” He was right. It’s not uncommon to struggle to load your first speargun, and you might suspect they made the bands too short. If you give it some time and use the right technique, it will become easy. First, some safety tips: 1) Never load a speargun out of the water. 2) Keep the safety on until you intend to shoot a fish. 3) Even with the safety on, treat it like a loaded weapon, never let the tip point at anyone. 4) Use tip protectors when not in use, so you don’t scratch anything. Some spearguns are loaded by resting the butt of the gun on your hip and pulling the bands toward the shaft notches. Others are loaded by resting the butt high on the middle of the chest and pulling the bands toward your sternum. Hip-loading spearguns are commonly used by scuba divers, as chest loading can be difficult when wearing a buoyancy compensator vest. Freedivers are less constricted by gear, so they normally use chest-loading spearguns. These have longer range because the shaft tabs sit closer to the butt of the gun. Now, some loading tips: 1) Wear gloves and wetsuit to prevent slips, scrapes or bruising. Some wetsuits have a loading pad built into the chest. 2) Don’t look down and hunch over when loading the bands. Push forward with your chest and pull the band swiftly with your arms, so the shaft tabs are pushed forward to meet the incoming
band. 3) Use a loading tab (if using a wood gun). This simple device makes things much easier by allowing you to first hip load the band to the loading tab and then raise the butt to your chest for the final pull. Although it’s a two-step process, it can be done quickly and will feel much easier. 4) If your bands are still too hard to load, use three longer bands. 5) Work out, lift weights, work on core and upper body. Try bench presses, seated rows, bent over rows, pushups and pull-ups. Bands and dumbbells can be incorporated into your workout routine, whether at the gym or home. If you want to see a band loading video, check out Coastal Angler online. And remember—you can accomplish anything you set your mind to! very blade-handy angler has their own techniques and tricks for peeling the perfect fillet off a fish. But anyone who has spent enough time around a cutting board knows the perfect way to fillet is a combination of three crucial elements: technique, tools and practice. Whether it’s a 15-pound red snapper or a 6-ounce bream, the basics of filleting a fish are the same. The idea is to remove the meat along the fish’s flanks, while leaving behind the head, bones and guts. Step 1: Make a vertical cut just behind the fish’s gill plate and pectoral fin. This cut should go all the way down to the bone and
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 2
extend from back to belly. Step 2: Run the blade from the first cut all the way down the top of the fish, along the backbone to the tail, making a shallow incision as close to the backbone as you can get it. Step 3: Using that long cut along the backbone, utilize smooth, light strokes to work the fillet away from the bones moving from the back to the belly. The other hand can be used to peel back the meat as you go. Cut around the ribcage when you arrive at it. Step 4: With step 3 completed, you should have a beautiful skinon fillet. To remove the skin, place the fillet on the board skin side down. Start from the tail and insert the knife through the meat down to the skin, leaving a tab of meat and skin at the tail to hold onto. Turn the knife horizontal and run the blade up the skin to remove the meat. Step 5: Use tweezers to pick out any pin bones left in the fillet. The technique seems simple enough, but if you don’t have good, sharp, flexible knives that are sized correctly for the fish on the board, you’re going to make a mess out of your fillets. Havalon has come up with an all-in-one solution for this issue with its Talon system. With five styles of high-quality blades that all fit on the same handle, switching from a 7-inch blade down to a 5-incher or even down to a 3.5-inch utility blade is as easy as pressing a button with their Quik-Change II blade replacement system. The blades can be resharpened as well as replaced to make sure they are razor sharp when you need them. Also, with a handle that opens up, clean-up is both thorough and easy with the Havalon Talon system. Rinse your tools down and roll them up in the included canvas kit so they’ll be ready the next time you need them. And next time should be soon, because practice is the final and most important element in the perfect way to fillet. Go fishing enough, and you’ll be peeling off perfect fillets for the table in no time. Check out the Havalon Talon System at www.havalon.com.

Jake’s Outdoor Adventures
Established in 1976
By Jake Worthington Winter is here and with the exception of some Rockfish biting here and there, not much fishing is going on from the piers, surf or boats. However, January is a great time to prepare for the upcoming fishing season. Let’s start with your rod and reels. Now is a great time to strip off that old line and take or mail your reels in for servicing. Some of us are lucky because we have someone local who performs this service. For others, they have to be mailed to shops that specialize in repairs of specific brands or to the factories that offer service on their brands. If you mail them off, make sure you get tracking and insurance for the replacement value of your reel. I prefer sending mine with UPS or FedEx because they have a better insurance guarantee should the reels be lost or stolen. I always call or email and communicate with someone before I send my reel to make sure how long it is going to take, what service they will be doing, and how much it will cost. Email is great but there is nothing better than speaking to the person who will be working on my reel. After you get your reel serviced, take it to a local tackle shop and get it respooled by them. This is also the time to have your rods repaired if you have some issues with them like cracked rod tips, burred guides or any other issues you may have experienced during the season. Some rods have been used so much and have had so much exposure to the sun they may need to be totally refurbished. Now that you have done these three jobs, your equipment is ready to go for next season. Now is the time to do some research also. During the next couple of months there are numerous trade shows that are centered on fishing. Here is a list of some that you can attend to help you become a better angler. Make it a point to attend and talk to other fishermen and learn some new tactics. Take your family and make it a family event. Check the websites for further information. TIDEWATER & THE OUTER BANKS 3
12/12/18 8:25 AM
OBX By Aaron Kelly
This month look for opportunity of decent weather windows. Cold North winds blow three to five days. Winds fall out you get one to three days of fishable weather. Stripers would be the primary choice. Tossing rattle traps around pilings and docks seems to get the schoolies. Bouncing these crankbaits off submerged cypress stumps is fun just got to be careful getting the boat into position. We go along the Oregon Inlet bridge and bounce jigs along the bottom and catch some nicer class fish. The tide needs to be running fairly swift. If you like to anchor up current and soak some live eels into the structure that can produce some bigger rockfish as well. When that fish first picks up the eel, you must give it a little drop back to make sure the hooks gets a chance into it’s mouth. I know its hard not to yank when you finally get whacked but your hook up percentage will go way up. If you enjoy surfcasting along the beaches, you would do better to push south towards Hatteras. The water is warmer and mirro lures and light jigs can find big seatrout and puppy drum. Just east of the old Frisco pier was always a good spot. Plus you’re in the lee of North winds. Wind at your back and flat surf helps feel the subtle bites. Old Jetty groins by the lighthouse can get juicy this time of year as well. Maybe try a hot pink mirro lure. Off the beach, most bottom fishing is closed this month. Maybe one could run into a school of big blues. Farther out yellow fin, bluefin, and mako along the gulf stream edge. Of course keep a sharp eye on the weather. Another quick note, the Oregon Inlet is shallow and sand is moving in and out so navigational markers could be “lying” to you. Beware of the ebb tide and a decent ground swell will have waves breaking all the way around the bar.

By Kristi Anderson, catchfishreports.com Virginia waterways are shaping up as the striper are stealing the show. A lot of action is being reported out of the Cape Charles area, at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, as well as the mouths of the James, York, and Rappahannock Rivers. For anglers targeting these areas, these fisheries are heating up and producing solid numbers of fish. Cape Charles and the main areas have been giving up some quality catches in the lower Bay. For those targeting the York, night time anglers have had the most success. Look for the striper around the structures of the lower bay, as this has been yielding good results. For those targeting bass, working the structure at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel will certainly have its rewards with a lot of solid action and a lot of numbers. Look for quality numbers of the 20-30-inch size class moving up into the rivers of the Elizabeth River in Norfolk and Portsmouth, as well as the James River with action reported off the James River bridge. Speckled trout are still available and can be targeted, although we are not seeing as many numbers as we were in the early to middle part of November. The trout are pushing into the shallows and the back of creeks, so targeting mud flats where water is going to warmer will most likely produce more fish. Lynnhaven and Rudee Inlet and even the Elizabeth River are showing quality catches of speckled trout. The specks have been reported to be in the 3-6 plus pound range for anglers putting in the work. Now is going to be a good time to whip out the Mirrolure and suspended twitch baits. You will also want to consider slowing down your retrieve as the trout become more lethargic with the cooling water, so focus on keeping the bait in front of them and in the zone a little longer. Anglers have been seeing the specks mixed in with the striper in the backs of the creeks so you might get lucky and go home with a mixed bag. You can try and work docks with lights because at night it’s where they come to feed by the light lines. I would also target some of the docks in the river, such as the York River, and the Rappahannock. Some of the longer docks, and of course bridges will be producing some quality fish. Tautog has been pretty hot this season along the Bay bridge. This is a pretty sneaky target species this time of year since a lot of anglers are focused on hooking up to the big striped bass. The tau fishing has been stellar thus far and we are seeing a lot of solid action. Areas producing quality fish have been found at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel at the islands. We’ve seen these areas yield quality fish using blue crabs, peeler crabs, and Bottom Sweeper Jig Heads. The flounder are making their way out but anglers looking to target the flatties are still able to locate them with decent catches. While you’re working the bay, inshore wrecks have been giving up solid size sea bass and triggerfish and are producing nice catches for those working hard for a good dinner. Our puppy drum has proved to it to be interesting year for this species in light of the freeze we had last winter. Due to conditions last year, it’s nearly brought the puppy drum bite to a halt compared to previous years. Fleets have been coming back to marinas with catches of yellowfin tuna, big eye tuna, and wahoo in the mix. North Carolina’s Outerbanks are starting to see catches of striped bass. The larger bass haven’t moved in yet but the fun schoolie size pushing 30 plus inches are making their presence known. Capt. Aaron Beatson, Cobia Killer, has been getting on solid trout action on the beaches and way back in the creeks. He reports a decent but slower drum bite on the ocean side still mixed in as well. Schoolie stripers can be targeted on various methods and have been consistent on the Bay side bridges of Roanoke Island. The Point is still catching bull drum and puppy drum off the Southern beaches and Frisco area. Redfish and sea mullet are also being reported off the beaches as well. In Eastern North Carolina, the trout and stripers have been the inshore ringer. Trout are running from 12-19-inches in most creeks and bays. Capt. Mitchell Blake of FishIBX said that swim baits and jigs have been most effective across the board to put his anglers on fish. You can expect the fishing to be up and down over the next few weeks and some fish will go deep as others remain shallow. The reason for this is because we are in a migration pattern with fish on the move as they respond differently to theses cold snaps. Anglers working this fishery have reported that one day there was ice on the ramp and the next it’s shorts weather. Expect the fish to be equally mixed. Some will be in a summer pattern and others will be in a winter pattern. If you’re interested in a charter or want to learn more about a specific pattern to apply to your fishing style, FishIBX has your low down and will put you on fish!

TIDEWATER AND THE OUTER BANKS Fish Tales & Other Exaggerations By Jolly Roger I have been blessed to live near the water for most of my life. As a young boy, our family had a small cottage just a few houses away from the Bay. This led to many adventures in the water and the surrounding coastline. My family would rent a row boat and go crabbing. My father was a good rower and would navigate the choppy waters to get to our favorite crabbing spot. In those days, we could fill a couple of bushel baskets within a short time. Pop would then row us back to the dock with our seafood harvest. That evening we would sit at the newspaper covered kitchen table and pick crabs, talk about our seafaring adventure and laugh about who was the best crabber. It seemed on those evenings, that sleep came swiftly with just a hint of the roll of the boat, still part of our dreams. One year, Pop found a used 12-foot aluminum boat with a 7.5 horsepower Elgin engine. Yes, Elgin made watches and boat engines in those days. He told Mom that this could expedite our crabbing adventures and potentially expand the harvest to fish and clams. Mom loved seafood and the thought of catch diversity helped her to then support Pop’s newest and greatest idea. A second benefit of having an engine would help his back, an injury sustained during his short, but prestigious college football career. Armed with new rods, squid, life preservers, anchor and line, we launched our new watercraft. What an amazing time. We seemed to coast on and through the waves. We weren’t too far from the Intracoastal
Waterway and so we headed to “deep water”. Soon our hooks were loaded with bait and we were fishermen and fishermom. My recollection was that I hooked the first fish. Blowfish were dumb and plentiful and soon we had more than we could eat for dinner. We reeled up and stowed everything that could move around. I was in charge of the anchor. As the First Mate of our new boat, there were certain duties that fell upon me, despite my lack of knowledge and muscle. So, I began to pull on the anchor line. What I didn’t understand was that as the waves tickled the bow of the boat, the anchor line would pull back. Soon, I was slammed into the V of the bow. Perplexing. Not to be defeated, I planted my knees in the interior of the bow and started to pull, again. I also realized that when a wave or a boat wake would approach, I could stay the line and use the wave action to help me. Suddenly, the Danforth broke loose, throwing me back into the front aluminum seat, but despite the bruising of my legs and butt, I was warmed by the glow of anchor - pulling success. We were now free to bring the catch home and consume some really fresh fish. As Pop pulled on the rope to start the motor, there was silence, except for some “encouraging” words. The green motor attached to the stern was quiet, but discharged a small smoke ring. Pop tried again and it appeared that there were two boat anchors, the Danforth and our newly acquired Elgin motor. We were now adrift and headed into the Intracoastal Waterway. Fortunately, Pop had been a Boy Scout and made sure the oars were included on our maiden voyage, just in case. “Be Prepared!” However, we were now in emergency mode. I was told to stay in the bow and Mom and Pop needed to shift seats. It looked like a cross between a waltz and a crab dance. They exchanged seats without incident and apparently renewed their vows. Pop got the oars in the water and stroked us out of the channel without being capsized, either by one of the large cruiser’s wake or by our own actions. Once we were out of Code Red, Pop tried the engine again to no avail. So he rowed us for a while and then gave me my first rowing lesson. As we headed in under my power, it looked more like we were avoiding mines and torpedoes. I appreciated the almost constant input by my parents, as I zig zagged towards the shore. Eventually, we got back to the beach by our house. We unloaded our vessel, which seemed more like a Viking ship, rather than a 12-foot aluminum boat powered by an Elgin motor. (Turns out, that the engine was not getting enough fuel to actually start. Gotta squeeze the bulb a minimum of three times on a restart.) That night was a more subdued dinner, as we each contemplated the day. It was then that I first realized what truly sore muscles were and the next day was even worse. My bruised legs and sore back, almost led me to a career at the chess table. But wait! We had done our jobs as hunter gatherers. We had overcome a potential shipboard disaster. I got to see the first blisters on my hands. We ate fresh blowfish and French fries. I think that we all went to bed early that night and were sound asleep by 9. We were blessed to have so many adventures on the water. This was a day of adventure, prayer and thanksgiving (when we got to the beach). My Dad continued to be my hero; though I did find out later that fellow boaters would actually tow you when there is motor trouble. I found out what “that look” meant, when I thought Mom was just admiring my Father with laser like focus. Mom never complained during the row fest, though in the future, she did elect to sometimes nap and let “her men” go gather the meal. So many memories, so little time.

First up melt butter in the large sauce pan then add the chopped garlic and chopped spring onions. Next add the can of tomatoes and crush them in the pan. Chop the parsley and add followed by the wine and salt and pepper to taste. Cook the noodles al dente prior and set aside. Next, be sure to wash the clams thoroughly and be sure they have already purged. Sometimes your vendor will do this, to make sure simply set the clams in cool water for an hour before cooking. Lastly, add the clams in the pot and cook until they pop open releasing all the awesome clam juice into the mix. Stir and simmer. Plate the noodles on a large serving dish. Next, pour the clams and the entire pot of juice on top of the noodles and serve. Garnish with fresh parm. THIS DISH IS TO DIE FOR…TRY IT!

BIG ROCKS BRING IN THE CLAMS!
JAN. 2019
First up we would like to wish everyone a happy New Year and hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas. We are very excited about filming in 2019 and this new year also marks 31st year of producing Jim Baugh Outdoors TV and our 5th year of writing for Coastal Angler Magazine. It’s been great working with the folks at Coastal Angler and hope our readers will continue to support them. Last month… what a doozy! Yes, we were very blessed to see our family over Christmas and that was the greatest gift of all. That and the 69+ pound rockfish caught in the Mid Atlantic Rockfish Shootout. WOW what a great tourney and this year the entire event was held at the Oyster Farm at Kings Creek in Cape Charles, VA. Why was the tourney moved to the Oyster Farm?? Because that’s where the fish are and have been for the past several years. Plus, the big bonus, the Oyster Farm is probably the best marina on the Chesapeake Bay with fantastic restaurants, event facilities, numerous boat slips, boat storage, a nearby awesome boat ramp, luxurious accommodation, and all located right in the beautiful historic town of Cape Charles. I had many anglers tell me how much they enjoyed their stay in Cape Charles and were excited about all the new restaurants and brew pubs that have pend up. Also, the tourney was held during Festive Fridays so it was much like fishing from a Charles Dickens Christmas novel. The Shootout payout was even bigger than last year. There were a lot of BIG fish caught and the biggest was over 69 pounds. Congrats to the Kerr Lake Boyz for taking the top prize! You can see the Jim Baugh Outdoors TV Feature highlighting the Shootout on our JBOTV Channel on YouTube as well as both our Facebook pages. Now, let’s talk fishing. While it is true that world class rockfish are being caught just off our shores at the Oyster Farm, the truth is while the fishing does boast trophy fish, the real monsters are really caught at an average of maybe one boat per day; and not every boat catches the hogg on every trip. These days if a captain catches one monster like 40+ pounds, as well as one or two other fish in the 20-30+ pound class, then you have had a great day. That is basically how it is when targeting these really big fish and that is a good thing. The fact is, for the recreational angler who just wants to catch a limit and fry some fish for dinner, fishing out of our area you have the best of both worlds. There is all the schoolie rocks you want, they are plenty and available all around the lower Bay and you do fish for them differently than if you were targeting the monster rocks. So, if you are heading our way to rock fish, plan your trip to include live baiting for monster rocks and then spend a day or two fishing for the smaller class fish. Both are there and both are certainly a blast to catch or catch and release. While you are in Cape Charles and you are thinking of storing your boat for the winter, you may want to check out the new Oyster Farm Boat and RV storage. Heck, I think they will store just about anything if it will fit through the door including farm equipment. The Oyster Fam Marina also has all the amenities you will need for your boat and one fantastic fish cleaning station to boot. The marina number is (757) 331-8640 and the web site is www.theoysterfarmatkingscreek.com Lastly our production company for Jim Baugh Outdoors TV has opened an aerial photography division called Mermaid Bay Air (MBA). THE 23-MILE ARTIFICIAL REEF: FISHING THE CHESAPEAKE BAY BRIDGE TUNNEL By Kristi, catchfishreports.com
T
he Chesapeake Bay is renowned for its one of a kind inshore game fishery. What makes this fishery so abundant in species and quality fish is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (CBBT). The CBBT is a 23-mile along artificial reef, its structure attracting numerous inshore species while creating a prime spot for anglers targeting fish in the bay. You may have heard anglers referencing the four islands of the CBBT. These islands are numbered from the Virginia Beach side moving North. Each of the four islands has an entire ecosystem unto itself and should be studied and learned to produce the most success when fishing. You may find that most of your catches are produced close to or right up against the structure of the CBBT pilings and tubes, or right at the islands by the rocks. The bridge has certainly provided an artificial reef with all of its structure, creating an ecosystem for many species to adhere to. For anglers looking for that inshore slam or those looking for a solid mixed bag, look no further than the Chesapeake Bay. In close proximity to the CBBT, fishing between the first small boat channel and the First Island has been one of the hottest places during the summers for solid catches. For those targeting species during the summer months, quality hook ups to sheepshead, spadefish, and slack drum are extremely common. Reports typically flood into tackle shops all summer based off of quality action found at the CBBT tubes and pilings. These fish are feeding off the ecosystem growing on the artificial reef of the CBBT whereby much of the activity is happening below the surface of the water. If you’re close enough to the pilings, you will be able to spot tons of fiddler crabs and activity crawling on the structure of the bridge, hopefully giving you a good indication that there should be fish not too far away. For all three of these species, anglers have success using fiddler crabs, blue crabs, and fresh clams for spadefish. Triggerfish can also be caught when using clams as well. All of these inshore species will give you a run for your money so when you get that hook up, it’s going to be a fun fight! The Yancy Wreck is one area you can work and target fish as you near the First Island. This is a barge that hit the CBBT and took out several pilings and the roadway. The remnants of this collision are now scattered along the bottom and attract numerous species including tautog, sheepshead, flounder, and spadefish. Although the first small boat channel to the First Island has been successful in holding quality fish for many anglers over the years, venturing down to the Second and even the Third and Fourth Islands have produced a lot of activity for bay fishing anglers as well. You can cover a lot of ground by moving between pilings and islands until you discover where the fish are feeding during a particular tide cycle. Another species you can target during the summer months around the islands, buoys, pilings, and cans, are cobia. On sunny days and especially when the water is calm, site casting for cobia can be extremely rewarding. Although cobia can be finicky and challenging at times to catch depending on their spawn and the weather conditions, if you keep consistent with using live eels or a bucktail, you’ll be sure to have success with persistence and precision when casting to them. Pro tip, although this might very well sound commonsense, using polarized sunglasses is absolutely key in order to effectively site for cobia. Depending on what season you’re fishing the bay, anglers may be coming home with a healthy mixed bag of flounder, blues, rockfish, red drum, croaker, just to name a few. Triggerfish are among the many species you can target in the bay as many enjoy the hunt. Spanish mackerel is also a highly desired species and easily targeted when trolling. Planers and clark spoons are often most successful when trolled at 7 mph.
If your trying to target red drum, schools of monster drum cruise the CBBT from spring until fall. During their spring and fall runs, you will probably get lucky and see large schools on the surface, while other times you might have to work at attracting their attention. Baits such as cut bunker, live blue crabs, and whole clams might just produce the most action you’ve seen out on the water with these drums! Large black drums are often seen inhabiting the same areas and can be caught interchangeably. There’s nothing quite like the fall drum run. If you’ve never stuck around long enough after the summer, you definitely want to think again because it’s sure to be a feeding frenzy with some of the largest drum in play! When thinking about targeting a specific species, it’s always important to know what the fish are biting on and what type of bait will produce the most action and success. Many anglers prefer the use of live and or fresh bait for to maximize their success of filling their coolers, but there are also many who are partial to artificial baits. I personally have always been a huge advocate of lures and soft plastics! Surface lures in the bay have a good chance of providing exciting action early in the morning and also in the evening. Chum will always increase your chances of attracting more fish and can help produce more success out on the water. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel truly is a unique fishery unto itself for its own inherent ecosystem. Anglers all over the world travel to fish this great artificial reef while we are the ones lucky enough to call it our backyard. The CBBT’s artificial reef has spurred the inshore sport fishing to a new level of fishing and has given anglers an appreciation for its diversity and abundance in species, quality, and overall healthy ecosystem.

T
he operations of the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park (ECLSP) have changed over its more than half century of existence. Designated a “no take marine reserve in 1986, no fishing or taking of any organism (including plants and shells) is allowed. The ECLSP is known internationally for its pristine marine environment and offers visitors exceptional diving and recreational opportunities. Recently the Marine Conservation Institute announced that the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park earned a Platinum Global Ocean Refuge Award. Joining a prestigious group of ten marine protected areas (MPAs) that comprise the Global Ocean Refuge System means that Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park meets the highest science-based standards for biodiversity protection and best practices for management. Each year, thousands of vessels visit and overnight in the ECLSP. Years ago, the Bahamas National Trust introduced a mooring and anchorage system with fees to reduce the impact. A new fee structure will come into force effective Jan. 1. Mooring fees are based on the size of the vessel and range from $20 to $150 per day. Daily/nightly anchorage fees are 50 cents or $1 per foot depending on the length of the vessel. Dive fees are $10 per diver. For more information, visit www.bnt.bs/exuma-cays-land-seapark/.

FRESHWATER
Since 2015, Frabill has continued to set the quiet standard in bucket conversion. The Frabill Whisper Quiet Aerator system is a portable, aeration design that provides the utmost discretion when fishing with live bait. Constructed with 75 years of experience, the Whisper Drive Aeration Motor has been specifically designed and tested to keep saltwater baitfish and crustaceans healthy and active while emitting minimal sound. With a couple of batteries, the Whisper Quiet Aerator converts any size cooler or bucket into an oxygen-rich livewell. Frabill’s top-of-the-line signature yellow air stone creates enough bubbles to effectively aerate up to 15 gallons of water. As a result of its over-engineered rugged design, Frabill’s Whisper Quiet Aerator has a long shelf life. The aeration system includes premium water-resistant internal parts that help prevent corrosion and won’t let an angler down. Never be surprised by battery rot again.

Surprising Winter is the Best Planting Time
I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly
at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste
better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature. Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant. Let’s Grow Together. Greg Ison, Ison’s Nursery and Vineyards, 800733-0324, www.isons.com
