SAILFISH ON THE MOVE

ailfish are on the move off the coast of southeast Florida. It happens every year as the first cold fronts make their way south and bring cooler temperatures and northerly winds. Highly migratory in nature, these acrobatic pelagics can be caught here year round, but the highest concentrations occur from November through April. Techniques for targeting sailfish vary depending on location. In Stuart, trolling dead ballyhoo with dredges in the spread is the most popular method. Off Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale, kite fishing with live bait on the drift is the go-to technique. In the Florida Keys,

it could be a combination of both or it could be sight fishing with a few live pitch baits ready to throw at a hungry sailfish. Regardless of location, wind and sea conditions change constantly and play a huge role in determining the best fishing technique on any given day. The best sailfish bite happens during tailing conditions. Typically, tailing conditions occur right after a cold front passes, while the western edge of the Gulf Stream is in close proximity to the coast. When the strong north current of the Gulf Stream clashes with strong winds from the opposite direction, it fires sailfish up into a feeding frenzy. In tailing conditions, it is not uncommon for the top sailfish boats in the fleet to catch and release 20 or more sailfish in a day. Not everyone can afford the expensive electric reels and other gear required for kite or dredge fishing, but anyone who owns a boat with outriggers can slow troll or bump troll baits to get tight with arguably the most majestic gamefish in the ocean. You will need four 20- to 30-pound conventional outfits. Since sailfish are capable of swimming at high speeds, you want reels with at least a 5:1 gear ratio and high line capacity. Connect the main line to 6 to 8 feet of 40-pound fluorocarbon leader with a small barrel swivel. Tie an inline circle hook to the business end. Use a 7/0 hook for larger baits such as blue runners or goggle eyes. For smaller baits like pilchards or cigar minnows, use a 5/0 hook. Deploy the two outrigger baits first with one long and one short. Then send out your flat lines from the corners with one short and one long. Once your spread is out, position your boat down-sea and keep it moving forward slowly by putting the boat in and out of gear. Keep an eye on your spread, as sailfish will sometimes show up out of nowhere. Sailfish tend to swim in packs, so it’s a good idea to keep a 20-pound spinning outfit ready to go with a live pitch bait. Once you get your fish to the boat, grab it by the bill and remove the hook. Hold your sailfish alongside the boat while in gear to revive it before release. Gene Dyer is editor and co-publisher of Coastal Angler Magazine/Fort Lauderdale.

don’t throw much anymore. I don’t throw them except for around the spawn, but it sure does work that time of year! JD: What was your most productive technique this year? Lester: A wacky rig, especially early in the season. It’s always huge for me during and around the spawn. It just gets bites and catches big fish, too. I put fish in the boat using the Mustad Titan X Wacky Neko hook with an X Zone Lures True Center Stick. I fish it on the MHX NEPS 81MXF. That rod was my MVP this season too.

BRANDON LESTER

JD: Speaking of MHX rods, you’re well-known for building your own custom rods on tour. What rods will you build this off-season? Lester: Mud Hole is always making new blanks available, so I plan on building nearly a whole new set this winter. You can build rods efficiently once you do it a few times, and it really doesn’t take much time. For anglers out there looking to have a full complement of rods that are the same brand but won’t break the bank, I highly suggest building MHX rods. They have a starter kit (great Christmas gift) on their website www. MudHole.com, and all the other bass rods a man would need. They have all the kits broken down by style, and if anyone has any questions they can ask me on social media. Instagram is @ brandonlesterfishing and Facebook is @proanglerbrandonlester.

By JD Blackburn JD: How did your Bassmaster Elite Series season go this year? Lester: I finished in sixth place in the Toyota Angler of the Year point standings and also finished sixth in the 2019 Bassmaster Classic. Those were both career-best marks. JD: What one new piece of equipment did you adopt this year that really helped you? Lester: The new C-Map card from Lowrance Electronics. Case in point: on Lake Guntersville this year, I fished structure I had no idea was in existence on that lake. The detail the card has on it is just amazing.

For more Lester visit,

JD: What was the biggest fish you caught this season? Lester: The biggest weighed 7-11, and it came from the St. Johns River in Florida. I used an 8-inch lizard, which is a bait people

T

he world’s largest and longest-running watersports and beach/ resort lifestyle show is a best-kept secret for retailers of fishing apparel and accessories. Surf Expo launched its Bluewater category in January 2018 with some of the hottest brands in fishing. Since then, angling has become an integral part of the twice-annual show, which returns to Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center Jan. 8-10. Savvy buyers will find that today’s Surf Expo is a lot more than surf. Featuring internationally influential brands from all facets of watersports, Surf Expo is the show that drives water-lifestyle trends each season. It is geared toward buyers seeking to stock their shelves, which makes it a unique opportunity for retailers to get ahead of the market’s next big thing. Bluewater is where buyers can find all the freshwater and saltwater fishing and marine lifestyle apparel and accessory brands grouped together in one easy-to-shop area of the show floor. Since Bluewater’s inception, more and more marinas, tackle shops and outfitters have discovered that Surf Expo is a very convenient way to shop all their mainstay apparel and accessory brands and then easily browse other products they need such as sunscreens, sunglasses, coolers, T-shirts and PFDs. Tackle dealers who don’t take advantage of the crossover between fishing and the overall watersports lifestyle are missing out on a powerful revenue stream. Surf Expo is the one show where you can see and touch it all… and attendance is free for qualified retailers. “We’ve been attending Surf Expo for many years,” said Aledia Tush, owner of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters, a fishing and boating landmark in Sarasota since 1959. “We’re always looking for new products, T-shirts, sportswear, suntan products, towels, sandals, shoes and sunglasses. Being a Florida retailer, Surf Expo is a show not to be missed!” Brands exhibiting in the Bluewater category include: HUK, AFTCO, 5Fin, Marsh Wear, Fish Hippie, Hooked Soul Fishing Co., Heybo

Outdoors, Salt Life, Big Ocean Sport, Florida Cracker Trading Co., REEL Happy, Deep Blue Gear, Salty Crew, MANG Gear, Sunday Afternoon, Anglur, Huntworth, Skinny Water Culture, Tormenter Ocean, Costa, Bimini Bay and more. “We’ve been coming to Surf Expo since the beginning, and we were one of the first to be in the Bluewater section—where we’ve found a new home,” said Bill Shedd, president of AFTCO and 5Fin. “There’s a whole lifestyle that’s being developed around saltwater, offshore and big game fishing that’s bled off into inshore fishing and more of an outdoor activity in the broader outdoor world. AFTCO and 5Fin fit into that. Bluewater at Surf Expo is a perfect section to corral up a growing number of brands like AFTCO, 5FIN and Marshwear. The buyers don’t have to walk around looking; we’re in one area.” Surf Expo is a place where it’s easy to get business done. It is a pure, trade-only event, which eliminates the hubbub of open-to-the-public trade shows. It’s also a fun place to be, with a laid-back atmosphere that appeals to those in the watersports industry. The Bluewater Lounge has become a popular hangout for the fishing crowd. Hosted by Hell’s Bay Boatworks, it features happy hours daily and talks with special guests from Captains for Clean Water. Preserving the waters we love has always been an important part of Surf Expo. It is a platform for the watersports industry as a whole to promote clean water, water access, conservation and sustainability. “When people come to the Surf Expo for the first time, they notice the relaxed, cool atmosphere. It’s that lifestyle we all buy into, and there are a lot of down-to-earth beautiful people at a surf show,” said Surf Expo buyer relations manager Steven Fisher. “It’s just a great place to be if you’re in the watersports industry. If you’ve got a shop, come check it out for yourself.” For more information or to register now, buyers should visit www. surfexpo.com.

feet; the fish are swimming along the trough looking for baitfish. When there’s bait around the trough (the deep channel where the breakers hit the beach), there are fish. Look for birds. When there are birds diving around the trough, the fish are near. There are several techniques I use to catch fish.

S

urf ’s up! Grab your spincaster and head for the beach. I just moved to Hutchinson Island, one of the barrier islands on Florida’s Treasure Coast, and I’ve had a lot of fun fishing the surf early in the morning and late in the evening. I’ve averaged several snook per trip, with a few jacks, plus bluefish and mackerel. My best hour so far was four snook, a dozen jack, two ladyfish, two bluefish and a mackerel. Now that’s an action packed 60 minutes, and the best thing is you don’t have to cast more than 30

W

TACKLE: I use a spincasting reel with 10-pound braided line and a clear 20-pound fluro or mono leader. Tie 2 feet of leader onto the braid with a double uni knot, and then tie your lure on with a loop knot so it moves more freely. I use a 3/8- or ½-ounce jig with a D.O.A. paddletail either in pearl white or silver sparkle. I like the lighter weight, but it’s harder to cast. Silver spoons and topwaters are my secondary lures. THE SURF: you want some wave action, and rough surf is better than calm, but if it’s too rough the jig doesn’t stay in the strike zone long enough. Always fish into or toward the wind so you keep in contact with the lure. TECHNIQUE: I wear shorts and stand in the shallow wash. You don’t have to get wet. After a wave breaks, fish the backside between waves, jigging gently and keeping some tension on the line. When a wave overtakes the lure, keep in touch with it and let it tumble until the wave crashes on the beach. Then fish the backwash on the beach side of the trough. If you fish perpendicular to the trough, the lure is only in the trough for a few seconds. If you cast parallel to the beach, the lure stays in the trough longer and you have better action. Remember, the fish are feeding in 6 inches of water sometimes and can even strike in the backwash. Keep tension on the fish when you get one on, and lower your rod tip so Spanish, snook and bluefish won’t jump as much. When a fish rides the wave into the shore, you’ll need to reel fast to keep tension or they will flip off. Where to Fish: Any beach access is good, but look for birds and activity. No birds, consider moving to another beach access. I like the St. Lucie beaches in the Herman’s Bay area and the beaches near the inlets. Richard Matteson is staff writer for the Stuart Rod and Reel Club. For information, call 336-414-3440.

s the holidays approach and temperatures drop, many will feel the need to scratch that fishing itch. There is no better place to catch your next trophy this winter than down in sunny south Florida. If it’s monster offshore pelagics you seek, winter offers some of our best fishing. Take your boat or book a charter out of Stuart, Fla.—aka “The Sailfish Capital of the World”—and you are sure to land a sailfish, a bucket list fish for many. Mahi, cobia, kingfish and wahoo will also be biting. Our average January high of 74 degrees will also quickly quench your thirst for warmer weather.

North of Palm Beach, we do a lot of trolling, and south you’ll find live baiting very popular, so don’t forget your sabiki rod. No boat? No problem. We have multiple beach-access points where you can catch your fill of Pompano, whiting, bluefish, snook and more, maybe even a permit or bonefish. In Martin County, check out Stuart Beach, Hobe Sound Beach and Tiger Shores. Excellent jetties and piers include Juno Pier, Ft. Pierce Inlet and Sebastian Inlet, where I recently limited out on redfish one day and caught an inshore slam the next! Fishing off the beach, a “pompano rig” will catch a ton of species and even cut bait on the bottom with a pyramid sinker will work. For lures, I like topwaters in the morning and after that I throw lipped crankbaits and paddletail swimbaits. Regarding inshore saltwater, I love fishing from the Saint Lucie Inlet north to Ft. Pierce. Under the docks and along the mangroves you will find snook, redfish and trout, as well as flounder and drum in deeper holes and channels. If you can’t find any mullet to net, a simple live shrimp and a bobber will catch everything and anything. If you do not have a boat, walk the shoreline for some incredible wade fishing. I caught my first snook wading the docks in Ft. Pierce many years ago. Don’t worry, I didn’t forget about you bass guys! Our incredible bass fishing this time of year starts with the largemouth spawn and plenty of crappie on Lake Okeechobee. I also love Camp Mack in Lake Wales, Fla. Mix up your freshwater game with abundant exotic species fisheries featuring clownknife fish, peacock bass, hybrid bass and even the bullseye snakehead. You will catch exotics in any of the Lake Clarke, Lake Osborne or Lake Ida chains in Palm Beach County. If you have any questions, Google “Darcizzle Offshore” to find my Youtube, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, website, podcast and e-mail to drop me a note.

Serving the Coastal Communities of Palm Beach County

DECEMBER 2019

From the Co-Publishers… Coastal Angler Magazine Palm Beach Edition has been busy this fall as we sponsored & attended some great Palm Beach County events recently. Boynton Beach’s 8th Annual Pirate Fest & Mermaid Splash was a blast, literally as they had legitimate cannons going off that caught everyone’s attention! Pirate Fest & Mermaid Splash took over much of the downtown Boynton Beach area with multiple stages for live music and performances, tons of great local merchant booths, & numerous bars and food vendors. They did such an amazing job with the attractions, like mermaids swimming and splashing around in the Mermaid Lagoon. Our girls took pictures with the mermaids, a memory that will always put a smile on their faces. We threw axes & our 10 year old son hit the bullseye! Watching The Sky Pirates in The Wheel of Doom was terrifying and thrilling all at the same time. The Pirate Encampments were so much fun, we felt like we were at one of our favorite Disney rides. We are looking forward to sponsor & attend this event again next year, as the Boynton Beach CRA truly goes above & beyond putting this together; you can see why they get 60,000 plus attendees every year. The following weekend Coastal Angler Magazine set up our booth at LagoonFest to celebrate the 20 mile waterway, The Lake Worth Lagoon, which took place on Flagler Drive in downtown West Palm Beach. Over 80 exhibitors were there including Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, Loggerhead Marine Life Center, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, ANGARI Foundation, Manatee Lagoon, Solid Waste Authority, Florida Fishing Academy, 4Ocean, Pura Vida Divers, The Loxahatchee River Center, and many more. There were free excursions offered like a kayak clean-up tour, interactive exhibits, and an amazing Kid’s Zone sponsored by Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County. Coastal Angler Magazine was very lucky & appreciative to have two special guests with us at the event, Dr. Ray Waldner and Dr. Bri Andrassy, both Professors at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Dr. Waldner demonstrated his very own unique way to rig a ballyhoo that yields a much higher catch rate for big gamefish. Dr. Andrassy brought her unbelievable sea kayak rigged for offshore fishing. Both made our booth very educational & exciting for visitors of all ages. We can’t wait to be a part of LagoonFest again next year, it was such a great way for us to connect with the Palm Beach County community & give back where we can regarding our waterways. Lastly, the next weekend we attended our first West Palm Beach Fishing Club’s Annual Awards, BBQ, & Auction at the South Florida

Fairgrounds. The West Palm Beach Fishing Club did an excellent job planning this event as there was plenty going on from the awards ceremony, live music, a silent auction comprised of such great packaged items for any fishing or boating enthusiast, a raffle that had so many desirable prizes, catered food that was extremely tasty, & to keep the little ones smiling plenty of bouncy houses for them to play on. On a final note, we want to thank our advertisers, writers, distributors, and most importantly our readers for making 2019 such a fantastic year as the new owners of Coastal Angler Magazine of Palm Beach County. From our family to yours, we wish you a happy, safe, and memorable holiday season. Tight lines! Ilene & Jeremy Wallace, Co-Publishers

Fishing with Darcizzle By Darcie Arahill Contributing Writer Happy Holidays Anglers! During December we will continue to have cooling air and sea temperatures, providing a much needed break from the heat and causing the offshore bite to fire up. Sailfish season will continue to provide anglers plenty of tail walking, drag screaming action. The sailfish use cold fronts to aid their southerly migration, and their numbers will continue to grow this month as they migrate through our waters. This is the time of the year when anglers from all around the world come to “Sailfish Alley” aka South Florida to target sailfish! If you are looking to catch a sailfish, it is important to pay attention to the wind direction and the barometric pressure. Many anglers believe northerly winds get the sailfish feeding but it is also due to high pressure. The offshore bite will be red-hot with stable high pressure conditions. After a couple days of consistent pressure, you have a good chance of catching this “bucket list” fish so plan accordingly! The bite also turns on before approaching cold fronts and rain, so keep this in mind when planning a fishing trip this month. Last month, we hooked quite a few sailfish slow trolling blue runners.

Mahi mahi will also be migrating south from the northern states with the help of cold fronts. The mahi mahi should range from 6-30lbs, with larger fish not uncommon. Blackfin tuna, in the football size range will start to show up as well. Trolling feathers and squid pups between 200-400ft will be your best bet to catch some fresh sushi! The bottom bite should also produce great table fare. During the month, mutton snapper, yellowtail snapper and trigger fish will be the best species to target on the reefs and bottom structures. Live bait or dead sardines will be the bait of choice. Keep in mind, NE winds bring the bait and pelagics closer to shore. Bait will gather at the mouths of inlets and areas with a fast moving current. Be safe during the holiday season anglers and until next time, keep on catchin’! Ask me questions about fishing & see my recent FISHING VIDEOS on YouTube! https://www.youtube.com/darcizzleoffshore

The Boynton Beach Community Redevelopment Agency and the City of Delray Beach invite you to celebrate the holiday season Florida style, as a flotilla of brightly-decorated boats light-up the Intracoastal Waterways for the annual Holiday Boat Parade. This holiday illumination show can be viewed in Boynton Beach at Boynton Harbor Marina (735 Casa Loma Blvd.) and in Delray Beach at Veterans Park (802 NE 1st St.). The watch party at the Boynton Harbor Marina starts at 6:00 PM and will feature music, children’s activities, and a special visit from Santa Claus. Parade-goers are welcome to pack a picnic and encouraged to bring chairs and blankets to enjoy the colorful view from the marina lawn. The watch party at Veterans Park in Delray Beach starts at 7:00 PM which includes performances from local schools, dance teams, and a hot chocolate & cookie station. Please support Toys for Tots by bringing a new, unwrapped toy to the watch party or to the Boynton Beach CRA office prior to the night of the parade. During the parade, Sea Tow and the United States Marines will make convenient dockside pickups. Just wave a flashlight when you see the parade and they will pull up to your dock to collect toy donations.

KAYAKFISHING Brian with a 37 lb. wahoo.

By Brian Nelli Contributing Writer

INSHORE: December will start to bring cold fronts our way. During winter months, when water temps drop, target areas that warm quickly like docks, mangroves, mud flats, and potholes. Getting out later in the day to allow those areas to warm up will put more fish in the kayak. Sight fishing can be great this time of year when the water clears. Standing in a kayak drifting a flat is an amazing way to see your targets. Start to look for our wintertime species like Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and pompano with every passing cold front. Hair jigs, spoons, and Gotcha lures work well. OFFSHORE: Winter winds will make offshore opportunities decrease. If there is a day where the seas allow you to get out, take advantage of it. Sailfish, mahi, kings, and wahoo should be your targets. Frisky google eyes and blue runners are your best options. Trolling the 90-200ft depths through Palm Beach County will put you in line for a bite. Finally, don’t forget your flag or visual device to keep yourself safe on the water and in view of other boats. FRESHWATER: December can be a great month on the lake if it doesn’t get too cold. Peacock bass and clown knifefish should be in good numbers. Look to target bridge structures and remaining weed lines for a bite. Live shiners and shad will always be the go-to but throw in a few artificial lures like jerk baits and rattle traps. COASTALKIDS My Fishing Adventures

By Christopher Sprague Jr. Angler-Team Tuppens, Contributing Writer Hello Anglers, Last month I went to the Fort Lauderdale boat show with my Dad. We had a great time and I helped my Dad with the Solace. This boat has everything in it... literally everything in a house is on this boat. I have already taken a ride on this boat before, which was very interesting because this boat has a V bottom, but split motors. In the boating industry, split motors were only used for Cat boats (boats with two separate hulls) until now. This iconic design in the 34 Solace allows them to put a 4 foot floor piece in between the motors for a lot of extra space. This means that with the design, it is a 38 foot boat, and this floor has a 2 foot extension that can be retracted when running or set out when diving or just relaxing. It makes it easier to get on and off the boat at a faster pace as well. This transom, the back of the boat, is especially useful for scuba diving. Since I do a lot of scuba diving, I understand the troubles of getting back on the boat. It is extremely difficult because you are carrying a little over 60 pounds on your back. When you have to get on the boat, a lot of the time the waves are over a foot high and you can have trouble getting back on the boat. When I was in my dive camp getting my divers certification, some other kids could not get on the boat since they were too young to have that weight on their back and jump up on the boat. This design also means that when you are fishing, if the fish swims fast to the back of the boat near the motors, you can easily keep fighting the fish with a lot less of a worry of getting the line stuck in the propeller. In our fishing tournaments, we have lost a few fish like this, especially when we first began fishing professionally. Now it does not happen as much since our team has been trained and has many years of experience on our hands. We know how to combat all these problems such as sharks, other boats getting in the way, backlash, and hooks getting pulled out of the fish’s mouth. 34 Solace on display at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show.

ENVIRONMENTALANGLER

Round Trip By Keith Lozott Contributing Writer By the time you’re reading this article I will have fished and come back from the annual Redfish Rally (Trademark Keith Lozott) in Delacroix. At the time of writing this piece I recently fished at Round Island in Vero Beach. Even though I say Ft. Pierce the boat ramp is in Indian River County, so I must give them credit for a great park. Whether you fish out of tricked out flats skiffs with all the bells and whistles, aluminum Jon Boats, canoes or kayaks this place offers many opportunities at catching a wide variety of fish. I personally fish out of a 19’1” Spyder flats skiff that gets the job done with ease. The ramp at Round Island Park is well maintained and easy launching for most boats. There is plenty of parking, bathrooms, and some areas that the land angler can wet a line. If you enjoy inshore fishing as much as I do this area offers a wide array of species to target with many ways to catch them. I’m an artificial bait angler personally but don’t cast stones at live baiters. Occasionally I enjoy throwing out a livey or two and wait for it to get crushed by a hungry redfish, snook, or trout. I really enjoy throwing a cast net off the record!!! This area offers shoreline mangroves that are perfect for sight fishing cruising redfish and snook hugging the edges. Just off the shoreline good size spotted seatrout seem to be laid up in slightly deeper water. Great go-to baits for this action is of course your favorite topwater plug and for me that’s a Spook Jr. in chrome, bone or white, and red head patterns. Other baits that work well are the Top Dog Jr. or She Pup by MirrOlure. My soft plastic bait of choice is the white D.O.A. C.A.L. Paddletail followed by the root beer chartreuse Paddletail. Again, your favorite lure of choice should work just fine. If you’re tossing plastics under the mangroves work them weedless for less mangrove hook ups and to get the lure under the mangroves deeper. When throwing topwaters towards the mangroves proceed with caution and accuracy. If you’re not into fishing mangroves, fishing the flats in open water located all over this area can produce a variety of fish. Trout of course followed by jacks, pompano, snook, tripletail on crab traps, and yes I’ve even caught a 20” gag by a spoil island on a red and white MirrOlure Catch 2000. I would strongly suggest exploring the areas on both the east side of the river and the west side as well. The shoreline that starts on the northwest side of Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and stretches almost to the bridge in Vero is a good place to catch the IRL slam on artificial baits. When the winds are light exploring is a blast so get up to Round Island try it out for yourself. Keith Lozott The Fishing Realtor

FISHINGFORECAST PALM BEACH IN & OFFSHORE

By Capt. Weston Russell Contributing Writer

Let’s start with the inshore bite. The Palm Beach Inlet will be a hot spot for jacks, permit, and sheepshead. Light tackle is the key where a Daiwa Saltist 5000 will get the job done. Live shrimp on a light pink leader will fool the bigger ones. Start your drift up current and drop it down. The offshore bite will be determined by cold fronts entering our area. The coldest days will produce strong bites from sailfish and dolphin. Also, expect wahoo in the mix. Live bait is a must, and this can be bought from your local bait boat. You can call them on VHF 68, but it’s best to get their cell number and place the order the evening before (just to make sure you get yours). After the bait meet up head east to the edge and put the kite out, or flat lines, it’s your choice. Don’t forget to have one deep with wire for that wahoo.

STAND UP PADDLEBOARD:

Holiday Gifts with the Paddle Boarder in Mind By Chris Anders Contributing Writer The holidays are here, and I have some gift ideas for the paddle boarding enthusiast. Let’s start with the stocking stuffers. Everyone needs a leash. Make sure that the leash matches the color of their board and it should also be a coil leash. Long leashes drag in the water and are a pain in the butt. Leashes run from around $25 to $40 depending on the brand. Some other items that are a little bit more in price are fins, hydration packs, and a PFD by Restube. Check out FCS & Future Fins. They have a large variety to choose from. The Dakine Waterman Hydration Pack is one of the most popular hydration packs on the market and run around $60. If you have someone on your list that likes to do long tour paddles, then I would suggest a soft cooler by Seattle Sports; either the 25 Qt. or 19 Qt. which runs between $40 to $50 and they come with suction cups. I know everyone thinks Yeti but most of the time you only need a cooler for the day not a week and the cost of a Yeti is around $250. Every casual paddler likes to have some tunes while out cruising on their board so why not get them a Bluetooth waterproof speaker. Check out Speaqua Speakers. They have a wide variety to choose from and I have used them for many years now and have never had a problem with them and I paddle in saltwater. The speakers run between $40 to $90 on Amazon. Moving up in price, you should look at a good carbon fiber paddle. If you have multiple people sharing one paddle make sure you get an adjustable paddle, so that one paddle fits all. However, if you are buying a paddle for one person and no one else will be using it, I would prefer non-adjustable and have it cut to their size. There are a lot of paddles out there, Quickblade & Werner both provide a wide variety and are popular in the racing scene. I also like Sawyer paddles. They have been around since 1967 and they have a signature wooden finish on the paddle and the T-grip which really looks amazing. Look to spend between $250 to $400 for a good paddle. It’s worth it. Finally, the most expensive gift for a paddle boarder, the board. This is something that is a personal choice and something that the person riding should pick out themselves. So, for this just put about $1,200 to $2,900 in an envelope and take them board shopping. Happy Holidays and be safe on the water. LAKEOKEECHOBEE By Capt. Nate Shellen Contributing Writer With the arrival of late fall and heading toward early winter, the water temperature in Lake Okeechobee is FINALLY dropping. The water level is high enough to provide access to the marsh areas as well as the shoreline cover. Savvy anglers eagerly anticipate the first wave of large female bass as they move along the shallow shorelines, where they gorge themselves preparing for the spawn. Lake Okeechobee’s bass are in feeding mode. They are chasing and eating shiners, shad, and whatever food morsels that are available. Once the bass locate a food source they will hang out in that area as long the food is available. Last year we located a spot that bass frequented fall, winter, and spring, with bass coming and going in conjunction with the moon phases. We were able to catch bass in this same area during prespawn, spawn, and post spawn. We fished this productive area different ways and from many different angles. At times during the season the fish would be holding in one single Late fall is prime piece of cover time for big along the area, bass on Lake other days they Okeechobee. would be scattered Photo credit: Capt. along the whole Nathan Shellen. stretch. Don’t misunderstand, there were days when we were hard pressed to catch fish in our number one spot and we had to move to another area. Each year we fish Lake Okeechobee, we learn something different about the lake. Late fall fishing on Lake Okeechobee is second to none. The sheer

number of bass in the six to ten pound range is incredible. The days are mild, and the bass are biting. It just doesn’t get much better in the bass fishing world. The northwest side of Lake Okeechobee is loaded with eel grass, pepper grass, and other great cover elements where big bass hold. From the east side of the lake at J&S Fish Camp all the way around the north end of the lake to the Point of the Reef, bass are already being caught in good numbers. Each year it’s only a matter of timing until the bass are triggered to start their Connor and Rick visiting from Ohio late fall feeding spree. It happens had a great day on Lake “O”. suddenly and without fail, one Photo credit: Capt. Nathan Shellen. day the bass will be of average size and the next day you might catch four or five bass over seven pounds. Crappie fishing will start to fire up as well as the water cools and will always be better before the full moon. They can be caught on jigs, and below a bobber with minnows. The limit for Okeechobee is still 25 fish over 10 inches. Specks can still be caught up to 2 pounds, with many fish coming in the 1 pound plus range. People come in droves to the lake in early December to catch these fish because of their fantastic table fare. Catching specks on an ultra-light rod with 4 pound test line and a jig is one of my personal favorites. Capt. FISHINGFORECASTS Capt. Craig

JUPITER INLET INSHORE

Eric with a nice tarpon caught in Jupiter.

By Craig Korczynski Contributing Writer

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas. December fishing offers inshore anglers a plethora of species like snook, tarpon, pompano, snapper, mackerel, and many others. Every fish has a migration pattern due to structure, food, and warmth. Understanding the patterns is key to a successful angler. Snook season closes December 15th, but that should not stop anglers from targeting them. Snook fanatics can find action near deep channels, docks, and sea walls. Live shrimp, D.O.A. Shrimp, and D.O.A. C.A.L. 3 inch Shad in glow gold rush belly are great choices to entice strikes. Back bays and canals are great as well. It is not uncommon in my area to catch 4 different species of snook. Nighttime fishing is also great to target snook. Fly fishing offers many strikes and drag screaming action. Tarpon begin to rise and show anglers who the king is, try bays and flats this time of year. Live shrimp and mullet drifted with the tide is the best technique to hook a tarpon. Artificial enthusiasts can also get in on the action. D.O.A. 3 inch Shrimp in glow, as well as Rapala Subwalk and Twitchin’ Mullet baits entice strikes. The trick is to find the pattern the fish want and it’s on. Jacks, drum, trout, bluefish, and lady fish all roam the flats and channel edges. Look for bait schools or birds in the area to locate fish. A good bottom machine like the Humminbird Helix helps pinpoint fish. Live shrimp freelined, and D.O.A. Shrimp or a D.O.A C.A.L. 3 inch Shad in glow holographic will get you hooked up. Tom with a snook caught in Jupiter. Captain Craig Korczynski 561-644-4371 • phlatsinshorefishing.com

JUNO BEACHPIER By Lauren Eissey, Loggerhead Marinelife Center Contributing Writer Winter months still summon a ripe fishing season in sunny south Florida. In December, Juno Beach Pier-goers can anticipate temperatures ranging from 77 to a low of 62 degrees. Relatively warm waters will provide anglers their pick of pompano, bluefish, crevalle jack, and more. But what you reel in is only as good as your bait and gear. So, prep your fishing lines with lures and jigs, such as flies and wooden plugs, to attract bluefish and mackerel. Pompano, crevalle jacks, and blue runners are not shy to finger mullet, shrimp, sand fleas, clams, or ballyhoo as bait. All of which can be live, frozen, or freshly dead. However, pompano are attracted to jigs and bait, whereas jacks and blue runners are more attracted to colorful lures. Schools of Atlantic croakers will be heading south for the season and can be caught with whiting as bait. A friendly reminder to dispose used monofilament lines in the designated recycling containers as more holiday anglers gather the pier. Loggerhead Marinelife Center offers private fishing lessons for adults and children (ages 8 and up). One-hour lessons are offered daily; scheduled based on availability. $25/angler (with own gear); $35/angler with rental gear. Bait not included. Email reservations@marinelife.org to register. The full-service Pier House features a snack bar as well as a variety of fishing tackle, including rental poles and bait. One of the biggest issues we have is people walking through our front door with an uncased firearm in their hand. Florida law states that any firearm must be in a case while being transported in a vehicle. The smartest purchases you can make as a gun owner is a case or even better a range bag for your firearms. Soft ones are made mostly out of fabric or leather and hard cases will be a plastic or metal configuration. I will be the first to admit that every day I walk or drive around with a general quick grab “man purse”. I have everything in it; concealed handguns, ammo, cellphone, charger, wallet, medical essentials, a knife or two, multi tools, and more. For anyone looking for a way to carry their concealed weapon without having it on them, this is a great alternative. For you range rats, get a range bag! Don’t show up with your ammo in a bag and your gun in your hand. We love when people say, “ Oh, it’s unloaded”, then of course what pops out as soon as the action is opened, a loaded round. Range bags can cost anywhere from $29.99 to hundreds of dollars. The bigger and cooler the bag, the more you will spend, but that thirty dollar one will work just fine. With Christmas on the way there is no better gift to get someone who shoots than a carry or range bag of some sort.

Here we go with the December forecast; this is always a fun month. Cold fronts are rolling in, water temperatures are falling, and lots of new characters are showing up. This is a great time to fish artificial and one of my favorites is a spoon. Silver or gold and heavy, that’s all I need. Bluefish, jacks, lady fish, and others will pile on; sometimes every cast and the best part is you don’t need a boat. It’s a great time to walk the beach and score some solid fish. Another great lure is the Doc’s Goofy Jig, it will catch many species like snook, reds, pompano, etc., where I prefer pink and white with a quill. Deep holes, cuts, and channels should be producing some tarpon, snook, black drum, and the occasional redfish. In freshwater, the peacock and largemouth fishing will remain great and the sunshine bass action Capt. Ken Hudson caught some solid peacocks. should be nonstop. Shiners, crankbaits, rattle traps, and any other lipped plug should produce lots of action. Good luck out there!

West Palm Beach Fishing Club’s Favorite Annual Bash By Tom Bzura Contributing Writer

Nearly 500 West Palm Beach Fishing Club (WPBFC) members, families, and friends gathered at the South Florida Fairgrounds to celebrate the club’s 85th annual, Awards BBQ & Auction. It was an evening complete with delicious cooked-on-site BBQ, a silent auction and raffle, and angling award presentations. Throughout the year, WPBFC members compete in the club’s year-long fishing contest, entering their catches for a variety of different species in numerous tackle categories. The annual BBQ is where these anglers are recognized for their angling accomplishments. Every Peewee member, kids under 10 years old, who caught a fish got their moment in the spotlight. One by one they made their way to the stage to claim their trophy and new PENN fishing spinning rod and reel combo. Recognizing Peewee anglers is a long-standing fishing club tradition, which continues to engage our youth in the sport of fishing. While these kids simply just need to enter a fish to win an award, earning the title of Grand Champion Adult Angler and Junior Angler of the Year entails much stricter criteria through demonstration of true angling skill. Fifteen year old Emily Hanzlik, a decorated IGFA world record holder, earned herself the 2019 Junior Angler of the Year award, one of the WPBFC’s most coveted titles. She posted several big largemouth bass and one massive 30 lb. 12 oz. jack crevalle. Emily landed contest qualifying fish on light spinning rods casting artificial lures with 8 pound test line, from the Sebastian Inlet, to out west in Loxahatchee. The Grand Champion Adult Angler award is arguably the WPBFC’s highest angling honor recognizing the best fisherman in the club. With over 1300 members there’s a lot of competition. Winning this isn’t easily accomplished, it demands throwing a variety of tackle including light spinning gear, plug casting rods, and fly. Max Lichtig of North Palm Beach got it done offshore and inshore to earn the WPBFC’s top angling award, persistently entering fish all year long. A massive 47 lb. 6 oz. amberjack is one Max’s many contest entries; he caught grouper on the west coast, a 9 lb. 13 oz. tripletail, a permit on spin 8 tackle, and a solid blackfin tuna while fishing 12 pound test line offshore. Max and Emily are both repeat, back-to-back, winners of these angling titles. Congratulations to both on their continued impressive accomplishments in the WPBFC. Special thanks to our friends at Tuppen’s Marine & Tackle & TD Bank for their sponsorship, to all the WPBFC volunteers who work tirelessly to pull the event together, and the WPBFC members and friends who attended. There’s opportunity to enter fish all year-round and walk away with awesome prizes at the WPBFC Awards BBQ & Auction; we hope to see you there next year as a member of the club! t’s the holiday season, a time of giving and good cheer, and divers are as ready as any to participate. One source of good cheer is supporting good causes. Humanitarian causes are typically linked to this season, but we can feel good about aiding organizations focused on our diving environment, too. A number of worthy organizations stand ready to put your aid to good use. This year, on the humanitarian front, there’s a special cause for divers to consider. Hurricane Dorian did a number on Grand Bahama and the Abaco Islands. The devastation has dropped out of the news cycle, but their needs will be great well into the future. The Bahamian government maintains a webpage listing relief organizations at www.bahamas.com/relief. While donations are a major component of the relief effort, restoring jobs is also essential. If you want to boost your spirits along with the local economy, try a winter dive vacation to Grand Bahama. Its major dive operations are back up, and flights to Fort Lauderdale and other international airports should have resumed. Restoration of Abaco’s services will lag Grand Bahama’s, but the islands should offer

great adventures for the more self-reliant. Of the many marine-focused organizations, here are several that Florida divers might consider: Probably the best-known diver-oriented nonprofit is Reef Environmental Education Network, based in Key Largo. Check out R.E.E.F.’s website (www.reef.org) but plan on a lengthy visit. Their “quizlets” will hook you if you’re into fish-ID. Coral propagation is an important tool in restoring disease-damaged reefs. The Coral Restoration Foundation (www.coralrestoration.org) has focused primarily on growing elkhorn and staghorn corals to replace stands wiped out in the 1980s. Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium (mote.org/research/program/coral-reef-restoration) is working with brain and boulder corals, with the goal of repairing reefs hit by the new disease outbreaks from Martin County down into the Florida Keys. Are sea turtles your thing? Two long-established local organizations are the Loggerhead Marinelife Center (marinelife.org) and the National Save The Sea Turtle Foundation (savetheseaturtle.org), which now hosts the Florida Hawksbill Project (www.floridahawksbills.com). In addition to collecting nesting and tracking data, Loggerhead operates a turtle hospital. NSSTF funds turtle research projects, including several at Florida Atlantic University. There are more ways to offer support than giving organizations cash. Check off your gift list while supporting your favorite cause. Check out their online stores. Apparel, books, toys—they’re all there. Save the Sea Turtle even offers subscriptions to “Florida Environmental Outreach” for a gift that gives all year. You can spread the holiday cheer close to home, too. Pura Vida Divers is participating again in the Palm Beach Holiday Boat Parade and supporting the Toys for Tots donation drive. Every new, unwrapped toy you donate at the shop earns you 20 percent off in-store items and a raffle ticket for Pura Vida’s Holiday Party on Dec. 13. This year, pick a cause and support it. Your holidays will be even happier!

rowing up, I used corks a lot, usually to know when a bream had taken my little dough ball when I was fishing in my backyard. Later, I used them to keep track of lively white bait or aid in casting shrimp farther. Now days, I use them more as a dinner bell than anything else. I am also using them in much deeper water than you would ever expect, but here you need a little patience.

If you’ve fished the flats in saltwater, you have probably used a popping cork and a shrimp at some point. Giving your rod a sharp tug to make the cork pop always seemed to liven up the action. Well, the same can be done in deep water to help hungry reds find your meal offering. The really cool thing about this is it works with conventional tackle as well as fly setups. The concept is pretty simple, a popping cork with about 20 inches of mono out of the bottom tied to large swimbait or fly. We use them around large schools of bait that are being worked over by breeding-sized reds. “Pop it hard and wait at least 10 seconds. You know it’s deep here and it will take at least that long for the fish to find it,” said Capt. Gary Dubiel. He should know since he invented the Pop N Fly technique. The key is to make a huge pop with a lot of noise and then pause. The deeper the water, the longer you wait. The fish are in constant movement around enormous schools of bait. When they hear what seems to be another fish feeding, they come running to get their share. But it might take a minute. You want to make sure your bait gets straight down below the cork, as well as giving the fish plenty of time to locate it before popping again. On average, wait 8 to 10 seconds in 14 feet of water, longer if the water is deeper. It is also nice that you don’t need live bait for this technique because it saves time at first light, making it easy to run and gun on large schools of bait. For tackle, a medium weight spinning rod with plenty of 20- or 30-pound braid will do the trick. On the fly, you will want a 10 weight to cast the rig and plenty of backing. Below the cork, your fly or swimbait will slowly sink down looking like a stunned or wounded baitfish that seemingly escaped a vicious attack… aka an easy meal. Pop and be patient, the strikes are basically unremarkable; the cork just disappears. But the fight of these 40-plus-pound beasts on light tackle or a fly rod is much more noteworthy. Will Schmidt is a seasoned tournament angler who has been writing about fishing for two decades. Reach Capt. Dubiel at (252) 249-1520.

FWC has approved several draft rule changes for spotted seatrout. Based on public comment, the Commission also directed staff to continue considering public input and update the proposal as needed prior to bringing this back at a future meeting for final approval.

Approved draft changes include:

• Splitting the Northwest spotted seatrout management zone into two separate zones including the Western Panhandle (Escambia County through most of Gulf County, not including Indian Pass/Indian Lagoon) and the Big Bend (Franklin County, plus Indian Lagoon, through Fred Howard Park Causeway in Pinellas County). • Moving the boundary between the southern management zones to create the newly-renamed South Florida zone (Fred Howard Park Causeway in Pinellas County near the Pasco County line through Broward County) and Central East zone (Palm Beach through Volusia counties). • Reducing bag limits - Western Panhandle: five to three fish - Big Bend: five to four fish - South Florida: four to three fish - Central East: four to two fish - Northeast: six to five fish • Modifying the recreational slot size limit from 15-to-20 inches to 15-to-19 inches total length.

• Allowing one seatrout over 19 inches per vessel (currently, per harvester). • Changing the current daily commercial limits to 50 per harvester and 100 per vessel. • Prohibiting captain and crew from keeping a bag limit on a for-hire trip. • Re-establishing the February recreational closure in the Western Panhandle zone and the November-December recreational closure in the Central East zone. Provide online comments about these draft changes at MyFWC.com/SaltwaterComments.

F

rog fishing is one of the most exciting ways to catch the largemouth bass that ambush feed in grass-choked reservoirs of the South. Lake Seminole, on the Florida/Georgia border, is one of the best frog-fishing lakes in the country. If you ever get the chance to visit Seminole, do it. In the meantime, these tips and techniques may help on your local grass mats. My favorite hollow-body frogs are the Spro Bronzeye series. Spro Bronzeye frogs are built

around a Gamakatsu EWG double hook that is very strong and sticky sharp, which is needed for getting big bass out of heavy cover. They come three styles: Bronzeye Frog, Bronzeye POP and Bronzeye Shad. Each has a unique action that works great under different circumstances. The Bronzeye Frog 65 has a pointed nose that can be worked over and through the heaviest cover or in open water. It’s the frog I choose for covering water to find concentrations of bass under grass mats. As the grass starts to die under mats, it creates open pockets and perfect frogging conditions. When fishing a Bronzeye Frog 65, heavy braided line is a must. My choice is Cortland Master Braid for its durability and strength. I also prefer a high speed reel, at least 7:3:1 gear ratio mounted on a 7-foot, 2-inch to 7-foot, 6-inch heavy action rod with a fast tip and a lot of backbone to haul big bass out of cover. Make long casts across a flat and work the frog with a fast hopping action. Expect a blowup! This is a great technique for covering large expanses to find out where fish are holding. When you get a strike, be sure to pause before setting the hook. Also, when a missed strike occurs, reel the bait in as fast as possible and cast back past where the strike occurred. Work the frog slowly with slight twitches to move it side to side but not forward. The bass should key in on the bait and strike again. The Bronzeye Pop 60 has incredible attention-drawing power. Its concave nose allows you to fish slower with a popping of the rod tip. The frog remains in the strike zone longer and generates explosive strikes. Fish this frog around all types of cover from laydowns to docks, to grass lines and holes in grass beds. I prefer a 7-foot to 7-foot, 3-inch heavy action rod with a fast tip and a high-speed reel with 50- to 65-pound braided line, depending on the cover I’m fishing. The Bronzeye Spit Shad 65 has a spitting and gliding action. It can be fished anywhere you would want to throw a hard bait but can’t due to hangups. I fish lily pad fields with this bait. It comes through pads very well and allows faster fishing to cover more water. As for racing, Viens started locally at the New Smyrna Speedway and fell in love with the sport. After starting racedaysponsor.com and climbing the ranks, he found himself at the Daytona International Speedway racing before all of his friends and family. “My first time there was surreal,” Viens remembered, “definitely my favorite moment on the track.” One day, after fighting again with a rusted adjustable wrench trying to get the drainplug from his boat, Viens knew there had to be a better way. On one of the Nascar driver’s long walks, the idea for the Boat Gadget was born. Viens wanted an all-in-one boat tool that could truly be useful and not something that just sat in the garage. What came to fruition was one of the most useful tools on the market today. The Boat Gadget has more than 10 uses, including: 1) Molded notches for deck plates 2) Wine or canvas snap opener 3) Fishing line cutter 4) 30mm & 35mm gas cap key 5) T-bar drain plug crank 6) Bottle opener 7) Flat top drain plug tool 8) Flip top gas cap 9) Safety whistle 10) Square boat drain plug

Secrets of a Billionaire Revealed “Price is what you pay; value is what you get. Whether we’re talking about socks or stocks, I like buying quality merchandise when it is marked down.” — wisdom from the most successful investor of all time

W

e’re going to let you in on a secret. Billionaires have billions because they know value is not increased by an inflated price. They avoid big name markups, and aren’t swayed by flashy advertising. When you look on their wrist you’ll find a classic timepiece, not a cry for attention–– because they know true value comes from keeping more money in their pocket. We agree with this thinking wholeheartedly. And, so do our two-and-a-half million clients. It’s time you got in on the secret too. The Jet-Setter Chronograph can go up against the best chronographs in the market, deliver more accuracy and style than the “luxury” brands, and all for far, far less. $1,150 is what the Jet-Setter Chronograph would cost you with nothing more than a different name on the face. With over two million timepieces sold (and counting), we know a thing or two about creating watches people love. The Jet-Setter Chronograph gives you what you need to master time and keeps the superfluous stuff out of the equation. A classic in the looks department and a stainless steel power tool of construction, this is all the watch you need. And, then some. Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. Experience the Jet-Setter Chronograph for 30 days. If you’re not convinced you got excellence for less, send it back for a refund of the item price. Time is running out. Now CLIENTS LOVE that the secret’s out, we STAUER WATCHES… can’t guarantee this $29 chronograph will stick around long. Don’t overpay to be “The quality of their underwhelmed. Put a precision watches is equal to many chronograph on your wrist for that can go for ten times just $29 and laugh all the way the price or more.” to the bank. Call today! — Jeff from McKinney, TX
