hile mystic grouper can be caught year-round in the Bahamas, the winter months are our favorite time of year. Whenever a weather window presents itself, we point our bow east across the Florida Straights in search of these deep-water bottom dwellers. Mystics are one of the lesser-known grouper species, simply because anglers don’t fish deep enough to target them. Like all grouper, they are excellent to eat and usually weigh from 15 to 50 pounds, although they can grow much larger. It takes special gear to fish the 800- to 1,200-foot depths where we find mystics. Armed with Shimano Tiagra 80 WAs and Shimano Tiagra 50 WAs equipped with Hooker Electric Autostop drives, we string up 65- to 100-pound Power Pro braid on Crafty One Custom’s Deep Drop Rods. We begin by paying close attention to our Humminbird Solix sonar with CHIRP HD digital technology to locate bottom structure. We look for cones, holes, drop-offs, ledges and deep-water ridges. Once viable structure is located, we position the boat above it with engines out of gear to judge how wind and current will manipulate our drift. Then the
boat is repositioned up-current from the structure and the deep-drop rigs are readied. When targeting mystics, we use our www.ThreeBuoysFishing.com grouper deep-drop rigs made with three 8/0 VMC 3x Circle Hooks on 100-pound branch lines off of 12 feet of 150-pound main line. For bait, we prefer fresh-cut 8-inch strips of dolphin, tuna, wahoo or barracuda. Many deep-drop anglers claim, “no light, no bite,” but our experience has proven that, especially with mystics, we catch more and bigger fish without lights. We deploy two rods on opposite sides of the boat. Lead weights in the 10-pound range are the rule of thumb, but weight can be adjusted to the current. After the weights hit bottom, the reels are left in freespool to lay the rigs straight down on the bottom. The engines should be used to decrease the boat’s drift to a standstill, if possible. If the boat drifts, let out line to keep the rigs on bottom. When the rod tip bumps and shakes, resist the urge to lock up the drag and retrieve line. Wait a minute or two for additional fish to sense the commotion. They’ll often eat the remaining baits. When it’s time to strike, lift the reel’s drag to strike (pre-set to 20 pounds of drag) and slowly start your retrieve. Big mystic grouper put up quite a fight at first, and you might even think you’ve hung bottom. Be patient and slowly gain as must line as possible. When fish are about halfway up, their air bladders expand and create lift. They will begin to float your rig up to the surface. For more tips and tactics on deep-dropping and the tackle and rigs to get tight, see www.threebuoysfishing.com. Finding bait becomes more important than at any other time of year. Goebel likes to get out well before dawn in search of shad or herring flickering near the surface, especially when a big moon keeps baitfish active all night. Diving birds are also a dead giveaway. They are likely feeding on baitfish pushed by stripers from below. “A lot of times if there’s bait there, I won’t even worry about marking fish on the graph,” Goebel said. “I’ll just put out my lines and start fishing where the bait is.”
By Nick Carter
T
here aren’t many anglers willing to endure the frigid early morning temperatures of winter on a large reservoir. But for those who can handle a little discomfort, right now is the best time of year to hook up with the striper of a lifetime. Around the Southeast, in reservoirs where striped bass were introduced, falling water temperatures spur changes in behavior that make the largest fish in the lake susceptible to anglers. Those 30- to 50-pounders are feeding up right now. They’re storing up reserves that will take them through the spring spawn. “It’s trophy striper season,” said Shane Goebel, of Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service. “The bigger fish are participating a little better. This time of year, we start going after those big ol’ hogs that are chasing the big baits.” The large summer schools broke up months ago. Stripers are spread out and on the move, following baitfish into the creek mouths and up into the backs of the creeks. Big fish move shallow when water temps hit the mid to low 50s on the lakes Goebel guides in the mountains of north Georgia and western North Carolina. It might take some searching to find them, but the rewards can be huge.
Because the stripers are continually moving with the bait, covering water is crucial. Goebel said to troll as many baits in as wide a spread as you can handle. Herring are great on lakes where they are present, but this time of year you should also work some big gizzard shad or trout into the spread. Sometimes it takes a big mouthful to convince big fish to eat. Goebel runs baits 30 to 40 feet behind planer boards. He’ll drop freelines 100 to 150 feet behind the boat. If the area where he finds bait isn’t too shallow, he’ll put a little bit of weight ahead of the baits on the inside boards to cover more water vertically. He slow trolls at about half a mile per hour. This is a pattern Goebel fishes all the way into May, when stripers have moved into a pre-spawn phase. It might not produce the numbers of fish that downlining into summer mega-schools will, but the fish are generally a lot bigger than those 5- to 10-pound summer schoolies. If catching an enormous striper sounds like fun, zip up your parka and get out on the lake. It’s trophy striper season. Check out Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service at bigolfish.com.

f Costa Rica isn’t already on your bucket list, it should be. Famous for both inshore and offshore fishing, it’s also a country with incredible biodiversity and exciting eco-tourism opportunities. In short, there’s something for every sportsman and adventure seeker here. From a fishing perspective, the west coast of this Central American country is most favored with several significant cities and ports including Jaco, Quepos and, of course, Golfito. It’s Los Suenos, however, where
my wife, Felicia and I found outstanding action on a trip last April. We worked the inshore grounds, catching huge roosterfish, rainbow runners, grouper, jacks and even mahi. We also decked a big cubera snapper. Of course, we did have an edge. Coastal Angler’s very own Costa Rica inshore reporter Capt. Carlos Arguedas and his first-mate son, Christopher, were our charter crew. “This really is a terrific place to fish,” said Arguedas, “We have access to a lot of different spots ranging from very close to the marina to 50 miles away. The roosterfish action is unbelievable here but we also catch big cubera snapper, amberjack, groupers and huge red snappers, too.” Arguedas loves to take clients for roosterfish because they fight so hard, are found close to port, and grow big. He’s had a 90-pounder grace his deck. For these, he’ll slow troll live baits like blue runners, herring, sardines or bonita. All of these baits, impaled on size 8 circle hooks, also attract other large predators; so you never know what to expect when the rod doubles over. “Roosterfish are very impressive when you first see them,” said Arguedas. “They are exotic-looking with big dorsal rays, a huge mouth and striped flanks. They are stunning to see for the first time. They are also exceptionally strong. Fight a 20-pounder and you’ll think you have a 40-pounder at the end of the line. They jump, too, and shake their head, so remember to lower your rod tip when that fish comes up or you’ll tear the hook free.” Among the other big fish that hit the deck for Arguedas’ crew on a regular basis are goliath grouper that can top 400 pounds. These are targeted around local reefs. If you want to run offshore, sailfish, tuna and marlin abound within 10 miles of port. Dorado, sometimes topping 30 pounds, can be tempted within sight of the coast. Costa Rica’s tropical climate makes it a year-round destination. Most travelers prefer to visit during the dry season, which runs from December through April, but you’ll find lighter crowds and lower travel prices during the “green” or rainy season from May to November. Whenever you visit, it really helps to work with a travel pro that deals frequently with Costa Rica to customize a trip here. Blue Water Sportfishing Charters (http://bluewatersportfishingcharters.com) specializes in setting up trips to Los Suenos. They can put you in the right place at the right time for the fish you want to catch, sights you want to see or adventures you want to experience. They’ll also book you with Capt. Carlos—or you can contact him yourself at www.wingmancr.com.

he first time I saw someone spearfishing, I was intrigued and wondered out loud how hard it would be to load a speargun. A friend heard me and said, “I’m sure you can do it. It’s probably more about technique than brute strength.” He was right. It’s not uncommon to struggle to load your first speargun, and you might suspect they made the bands too short. If you give it some time and use the right technique, it will become easy. First, some safety tips: 1) Never load a speargun out of the water. 2) Keep the safety on until you intend to shoot a fish. 3) Even with the safety on, treat it like a loaded weapon, never let the tip point at anyone. 4) Use tip protectors when not in use, so you don’t scratch anything. Some spearguns are loaded by resting the butt of the gun on your hip and pulling the bands toward the shaft notches. Others are loaded by resting the butt high on the middle of the chest and pulling the bands toward your sternum. Hip-loading spearguns are commonly used by scuba divers, as chest loading can be difficult when wearing a buoyancy compensator vest. Freedivers are less constricted by gear, so they normally use chest-loading spearguns. These have longer range because the shaft tabs sit closer to the butt of the gun. Now, some loading tips: 1) Wear gloves and wetsuit to prevent slips, scrapes or bruising. Some wetsuits have a loading pad built into the chest. 2) Don’t look down and hunch over when loading the bands. Push forward with your chest and pull the band swiftly with your arms, so the shaft tabs are pushed forward to meet the incoming
band. 3) Use a loading tab (if using a wood gun). This simple device makes things much easier by allowing you to first hip load the band to the loading tab and then raise the butt to your chest for the final pull. Although it’s a two-step process, it can be done quickly and will feel much easier. 4) If your bands are still too hard to load, use three longer bands. 5) Work out, lift weights, work on core and upper body. Try bench presses, seated rows, bent over rows, pushups and pull-ups. Bands and dumbbells can be incorporated into your workout routine, whether at the gym or home. If you want to see a band loading video, check out Coastal Angler online. And remember—you can accomplish anything you set your mind to! he action in northwest Costa Rica has once again been off the charts as FishingNosara celebrates its 10th season of charter fishing. All five boats are in the water and scoring big for their clients, with 51 trips logged in November. Big dorados are the staple catch this time of year, but it was a welcome surprise to see swarms of billfish in the mix. The team nabbed 12 marlin releases, 24 sailfish releases, 217 dorados, and five roosterfish releases. One of these roosters was a nearworld-record at 72 pounds. On Nov. 19, Capt. Alex on the Harvester posted the best trip of the month with Terry and Julie Edwards’ group. They loaded up the trophy case with excellent releases. A 300-plus-pound blue marlin was the headliner of the trip for these Texas anglers, and shortly after that battle, the 32-foot mega panga nabbed a wonderful sailfish release. Team Edwards came inshore to finish the day, and saved the best for last… that massive 72-pound roosterfish.
2
The IGFA All-Tackle Record for roosterfish is 114 pounds, and the second-place fish is 85 pounds. This fish caught by the Harvester wasn’t far off the second place catch. Most impressively, the above-mentioned IGFA record catches were posted in 1960 and 1954 respectively. This size of roosterfish has not been seen in more than five decades. On the same day, other members of Julie Edwards’ family had a big time on the 32-foot Discoverer with a blue marlin release of their own. Capt. Carlos estimated this fish at 250 pounds upon release. Also in November, FishingNosara Hall of Famer Bill Harris took to the 28-foot bar-room brawler Explorer and opened up her season with a billfish grand slam! A big blue marlin was the highlight of the morning, and it was followed by a late-day striped marlin. Bill nabbed the first marlin, and Mark Scott scored the second. A nice Pacific sailfish caught by Diane Turner completed the grand slam for these Tampa, Fla.based anglers. They didn’t go home empty handed, either, thanks to five big tasty dorado catches spread throughout the day. On the Discoverer, the team of Eli Bedran, Andrew Lipps, Kelsey Harry and Laurie Harry report a fantastic blue marlin release, the first of the year for the big battleship, plus six lovely dorados. John Purdy, John Van Diver, Mike Pickelsimer and Dale McElroy fished in early November and reported 11 sweet dorados on ice. The Harvester has been itching for action, and found what she was looking for as these monsters topped out at 60 pounds. The action was so hot that Capt. Alex chose to release the biggest cows so as not to hurt the stocks. Naturally, we have full reports of all these catches and more archived at Blog.FishingNosara.com, including videos. January and February will be super-busy and the spring months are already filling up fast. Get your plans together so we can secure your fishing adventure with FishingNosara, some of the best sportfishing in Costa Rica.

oel’s Distributing in south Florida has reached a milestone—40 years in business. Not many operations can make that claim, and so a look down memory lane seems appropriate. Tom Noel, aka Paddleboat Tom, moved to Florida from Michigan in 1979. He closed his grocery store, loaded a pickup truck with three paddleboats, his wife Joy, two sons, a daughter and the family dog and headed south. Tom set up shop in his garage in their Lake Clarke Shores home. After a few years, Joy put her foot down and insisted that he find a warehouse. Tom rented a space next to their current location, just off Forest Hill Blvd in West Palm Beach. A couple of years later he bought the 3,000 square-foot warehouse. Tom’s sons Rob and Tom are also involved with the business. Noel’s Distributing sells safety equipment, fire extinguishers, flares, rope, anchors and a warehouse full of other boating supplies to their clients, predominately in the Keys, along the east coast and in central Florida. They will ship anywhere. Many of their clients search them out for their custom rope splicing and then discover the realm of equipment they carry. If you are looking for anything marine related, it’s worth a phone call. They are generally a better value than the larger chain stores. Tom and his sons are very thankful for their longtime clients. Check out Noel’s Distributing at noeldistributing.com or give them a call at (561) 585-2387.

ahoo Smackdown X, hosted by the historic Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina on Nov. 8-12, saw 23 boats competing for more than $25,000 in cash and prizes. Out of the 23 competing boats, 22 teams landed fish, bringing 152 wahoo to the scales in the process. Team Who’s Your Daddy took top team honors with 16 fish weighing a total of 231.5 pounds and took home $15,000 in cash winnings. Second place was Team Blitzsea, which earned $7,500 in cash for their 21 fish and a total catch weight of 206.4 pounds. Team Murderize, out of Freeport, Grand Bahama, finished third, taking home $2,500 in cash winnings for a catch of 11 fish with a total catch weight of 193.6 pounds. Team Little Giant caught the largest wahoo of the tournament at 50.7 pounds. Tournament festivities included live local entertainment nightly, a cocktail reception poolside for the captains’ meeting, a cookout on day one of the tournament, and a closing awards party on the great lawn, featuring a buffet, live entertainment and a full open bar. Sponsors for this year’s tournament include American Beverage Marketers (www.masterofmixes.com) as the Title Sponsor, Bahamian Brewery and Beverage (Sands), artist David Dunleavy, Tropic Ocean Airways, Caza Offshore, Live Wire Tackle, Flanigan’s, CS Custom Lures and Bimini Big Game Club. With more than 50-record-setting catches in the waters around the island, Bimini has often been referred to as the Sport Fishing Capital of the World. The Big Game Club opened for business in 1947. Owner Neville Stewart saw the promise and allure of fishing and personally developed and encouraged tournaments. He sold his interest to Bacardi, which over 30 years grew the tradition with many memorable tournaments. The current owners, the Southern California-based Hankey Group, put the iconic fishing resort back in play in 2010 and are completing a multi-million-dollar renovation, that includes numerous capital improvements to the rooms, restaurant and lounge, landscaping, new pool and a renovated 75 slip marina, including docks and seawall.

ric Anderson, a senior environmental analyst with the Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management, recently received the 2018 Atlantic Coastal Fish Habitat Partnership Melissa Laser Award. The award recognizes individuals who demonstrate exemplary support of fish habitat conservation. Since 2007, Anderson has led the design, construction, monitoring and management of 10 large-scale estuarine habitat restoration projects in Lake Worth Lagoon. His work has focused on restoration of seagrass and mangrove habitats by creating in-water habitat islands. The Grassy Flats project, endorsed by ACFHP in 2012, exemplifies Anderson’s talents in managing all of the challenges of a successful restoration project. Grassy Flats is a 12-acre, $3.7 million seagrass, mangrove, oyster and tidal marsh restoration project that included multiple partners and grants. The project employed innovative construction methods, including use of a “sand-shooter” to compact and bury accumulated benthic muck. Monitoring of fish, wildlife and vegetation two years after the completion of the project shows it is successfully providing habitat and being utilized by a diverse suite of native fish and wildlife. The Grassy Flats project has proved to be resilient, successfully withstanding the impacts of Hurricane Irma in 2017. Anderson is currently developing two large-scale projects that will create additional mangrove and seagrass habitats similar to Grassy Flats. Palm Beach County has earned a reputation of excellence in estuarine restoration, largely due to Anderson’s hard work and dedication.

An octopus emerges, half hidden, from a pipe at Blue Heron Bridge. Photo by John Liddington.
By John Liddington or too many years I divided my Florida diving between the Keys and the caves. I saw the space between them on the map as no-man’s land, to be covered at maximum speed in minimum time. Five years ago, that changed. I dropped in to the Pura Vida Divers shop to find out about local diving. I learned that for divers PBC stands not for Palm Beach County, but rather Palm Beach currents. Singer Island is where the Gulf Stream makes its closest approach to the United States. This means their offshore dives are drift dives. In addition to describing many of their boat sites, Pura Vida said I

should check out the Blue Heron Bridge. Jackpot! The Blue Heron Bridge, which connects Singer Island to the mainland, is a marine-life melting pot. Angelfish, batfish, bonefish, dolphinfish, frogfish, jawfish, lizardfish, needlefish, parrotfish—if it has fish in its name, you will probably find it there. Phil Foster Park, at the eastern end of the bridge, is the perfect spot to look for them. The waters off its beach contain a variety of micro-habitats that offer all those fish homes and feeding grounds. Sand and sea grass holds garden eels, stargazers, jawfish, batfish, flying gurnards and invertebrates like horseshoe crabs, mantis shrimp and sea stars. An 800-foot snorkeling trail, with concrete reefs and three concrete shark statues, runs parallel to the shore. Here you can find reef fish, such as grunts, porkfish, angelfish and parrotfish, along with arrow crabs and banded coral shrimp. The bridge pilings have built up heavy encrustations of sponge, soft coral and hydroids. Spadefish, adult angelfish and morays like this environment, and you might see spotted eagle rays or even a manatee. Of course, there is no shortage of human debris. If it’s big enough to squeeze inside, you’ll probably find something, especially blennies and octopus, calling it home. Getting in the water requires planning. Most of the south side of the park is beach where divers can enter the water. Stay on the surface while in the designated swimming area. Dive flags are required. Of course there has to be one thing to keep it from being perfect— remember Palm Beach currents? The lagoon’s water rises and falls with the tides, and all that water goes under the bridge. Because of strong currents, the most comfortable diving and best visibility comes in a window between about a half-hour before and after slack high tide. I’ve been back to the Blue Heron Bridge many times over the five years since Pura Vida Divers turned me on to it. Shortly after my first dive there, Sport Diver Magazine listed the Bridge as one of the 50 top dives in the world. I couldn’t agree more.

very blade-handy angler has their own techniques and tricks for peeling the perfect fillet off a fish. But anyone who has spent enough time around a cutting board knows the perfect way to fillet is a combination of three crucial elements: technique, tools and practice. Whether it’s a 15-pound red snapper or a 6-ounce bream, the basics of filleting a fish are the same. The idea is to remove the meat along the fish’s flanks, while leaving behind the head, bones and guts. Step 1: Make a vertical cut just behind the fish’s gill plate and pectoral fin. This cut should go all the way down to the bone and
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 2
extend from back to belly. Step 2: Run the blade from the first cut all the way down the top of the fish, along the backbone to the tail, making a shallow incision as close to the backbone as you can get it. Step 3: Using that long cut along the backbone, utilize smooth, light strokes to work the fillet away from the bones moving from the back to the belly. The other hand can be used to peel back the meat as you go. Cut around the ribcage when you arrive at it. Step 4: With step 3 completed, you should have a beautiful skinon fillet. To remove the skin, place the fillet on the board skin side down. Start from the tail and insert the knife through the meat down to the skin, leaving a tab of meat and skin at the tail to hold onto. Turn the knife horizontal and run the blade up the skin to remove the meat. Step 5: Use tweezers to pick out any pin bones left in the fillet. The technique seems simple enough, but if you don’t have good, sharp, flexible knives that are sized correctly for the fish on the board, you’re going to make a mess out of your fillets. Havalon has come up with an all-in-one solution for this issue with its Talon system. With five styles of high-quality blades that all fit on the same handle, switching from a 7-inch blade down to a 5-incher or even down to a 3.5-inch utility blade is as easy as pressing a button with their Quik-Change II blade replacement system. The blades can be resharpened as well as replaced to make sure they are razor sharp when you need them. Also, with a handle that opens up, clean-up is both thorough and easy with the Havalon Talon system. Rinse your tools down and roll them up in the included canvas kit so they’ll be ready the next time you need them. And next time should be soon, because practice is the final and most important element in the perfect way to fillet. Go fishing enough, and you’ll be peeling off perfect fillets for the table in no time. Check out the Havalon Talon System at www.havalon.com.

America’s First Destination Resort - The Palm Beaches Movie stars, aristocrats and barons of industry have frolicked on Palm Beach’s golden sands since America’s First Resort Destination® rose to favor in the late 1800s. But you don’t need to be a Rockefeller to have your own “once upon a time” moment here. All those who travel to Palm Beach will find a warm welcome, a tropical breeze and plenty of ways to live a modern-day fairy tale. For the locals, we are lucky enough to experience all that the Palm Beaches have to offer all the time. But do you? When was the last time you took a drive through Lion Country Safari? They’ve done a lot to the place in the last several years, so if you’ve not been there recently, take your next visitors there for a treat. What about Loggerhead Marinelife Center; when was your last visit there? They have big expansion plans in the works and are always welcoming visitors to the Center as well as the Juno Pier for some great fishing or private fishing lessons. This time of year, the Manatee Lagoon is a very special place to visit. Expect to see the waters loaded with manatees and fish, particularly on a chilly day. High tide is the best time to visit, with the crystal clear waters coming in from the Gulf Stream making for great visibility. There are limitless opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and our spectacular Florida sunshine. We now have two baseball stadiums to enjoy spring training activities. The Winter Equestrian Events and Polo in Wellington are always a unique experience. Looking to get in the action yourself? Fishing, diving, snorkeling, paddleboarding, kayaking, spearfishing are all exceptional here. Visit the Coastal Angler website coastalanglermag.com/palm-beach to find articles on all of these activities from our experienced writers for this month as well as previous months. With 47 miles of pristine coastline, your only dilemma will be deciding which water activities to choose. Get your pulse racing with a high-speed boat tour, Jet Ski rental or flyboarding experience. Slow things down on a kayak, canoe or stand-up paddleboard in our calm coastal inlets or cypress-shaded inland rivers. Or, join one of our many fishing charters or drift boats and head out to the Gulf Stream in search of the big one (they don’t call this Sailfish Alley for nothing). Go deeper and explore the third-largest barrier reef system in the world on a snorkeling or diving excursion. Swim alongside sea turtles and tropical fish at Phil Foster Park Snorkel Trail, Peanut Island or Coral Cove Park in Tequesta. Experienced divers can venture further out to underwater caves, historic shipwrecks and even a vintage Rolls-Royce. There are plenty of ways to play on dry land, too. As Florida’s Golf Capital®, The Palm Beaches boast more than 150 bucket listworthy golf courses. The National Croquet Center is the world’s largest dedicated croquet facility, while the Palm Beach Gardens Tennis Center offers 18 hydro-grid clay courts for day- and nighttime play. Or explore our hundreds of hiking and biking trails, taking you everywhere from Everglades swamplands to the backyards of Palm Beach’s grandest mansions. Happy New Year Anglers! Start off the New Year right and take advantage of the fantastic fishing we are blessed with off Palm Beach County! The sailfish sector aka ‘Sailfish Alley’ of the Gulf Stream is at its prime this month. The sailfish bite is best when a chilly north wind starts howling, kicking up the seas as it plows head-on into the Gulf Stream and stacking up the bait. A general rule of thumb to remember, the sailfish bite improves the first few days following a cold front. Anglers should look for pods of bait on their depth finder, a clean water edge or a temperature break that will lead you to the fish. A majority of anglers fishing offshore this month will be deploying kites for kite fishing, allowing anglers to have the best bait presentation possible. TIP: You should consider purchasing a drift anchor if you have a center console. A drift anchor will help you stay in the depth you are fishing longer, especially when the winds are howling and pushing your vessel out of the strike zone. Historically, productive areas for sailfish range from the Jupiter ledge, to the waters in front of the Breakers and the Ritz Carlton, down to Boynton’s water tower, the ‘Martini Glass.’ Depth is key when kite fishing; you should target your efforts between 80-250 feet of water for sailfish until you determine the best depth for that day. If the seas are fairly calm this month, try to explore further offshore to find the occasional dolphin or wahoo. While traveling to and from your fishing grounds you should be on the lookout for cobia swimming in the shallows close to the beach. Also, along the beaches; pompano, bluefish and Spanish mackerel will be plentiful. Spanish mackerel put up a hard fight on light tackle and are great table fare, with fish 5-7lbs not uncommon. You can target Spanish mackerels by boat trolling depths 10-25ft and casting colorful jigs, spoons or swimming plugs along the beach. For land based anglers, the Juno and Lake Worth pier, and rock piles off Boynton Inlet should produce a good bite. For those anglers that love to bottom fish, set up your drifts in depths of 60 to 120 feet near wrecks and reefs. Drift your baits using a triple hook rig with a dead sardine or a chicken rig with a sinker; both should yield muttons, yellowtail, mangrove snapper, and kingfish. Until next time, keep On Catchin’! Ask me questions about fishing & see my recent FISHING VIDEOS on YouTube! https://www.youtube.com/darcizzleoffshore Assortment of bottom fish caught on dead sardines and squid using a chicken rig

FISHINGFORECASTS SOUTH COUNTY INSHORE & FRESHWATER By Capt. Patrick Smith
Boynton Beach take time out

It’s finally winter and here’s your fishing forecast. This time of the year I fish where ever the wind and tides allow. Nearshore, on the beach and in the inlets are all going to get fished on most days. Nearshore and on the beach: check the shallow wrecks and reefs for bluefish and mackerel. A lot of times there will be small jacks and blue runners mixed in. Keep it simple as far as tackle. A light weight spinning reel and a chrome spoon with a single j hook will probably get you a ton of action. It’s a fun time to throw topwaters also. I normally remove the trebles and replace with a single j hook in the rear. In the inlets, try bouncing Bernie with a big jigs with shrimp or procure peacock gel to load up on grouper, sheepshead, porgies, mackerel, snappers and many other species. I normally put a freelined mullet out while drifting the inlet and end up hooking snook, tarpon and giant jacks. Don’t be surprised if you hook into a permit Patrick and or African pompano while Wilson with fishing in the inlet. It’s deep a solid snook and you just never know on fly whats gonna be in there. In the lagoon, deep bridges, holes and wrecks are going to be you friend. If you locate a deep spot surrounded by shallows, there’s a great chance you will Mike find snook and reds schooled releasing at the bottom. Try the same a beautiful technique of a shrimp tipped redfish that jig and drag it through the ate his fly mud. All the usual suspects will be around and I would expect to catch all the other species 5 to 1 over snook. If you have big snook on your mind I would suggest fishing a chunk of ladyfish around bridge pilings. This method has caught some real winter time giants. In the Everglades, as the water continues to drop the fishing will get better. It’s easy to have your best day of freshwater fishing almost every day from now till May. Oscars, bass, pickerel, cichlids, peacocks, bowfin and more are available almost every day. Top water poppers, super flukes and very light weight fly rods are all excellent choices. Capt. Dear Recyclinda, My Amazon packaging comes with this plastic with a recycle sign and the number 4. Do I simply toss this in my blue bin? Barbara in Palm Beach Gardens Hi Barbara, Nope! This packaging plastic should be packed into a garbage bag or taken to a grocer’s “Plastic Bags” collection bin. As a Barbara’s matter of fact, no plastic bags or plastic film of any disingenuous kind should go in your blue or yellow recycling bin. plactic That recycle symbol is somewhat misleading. Most plastic products are imprinted with that famous triangle made of arrows with a number in the middle, but that number tells you only the kind of plastic an item is made of. Since these shipping bags are marked #4, we know it’s made of low-density polyethylene, or LDPE, but that’s all we know: The symbol can’t tell you whether not a particular item is recyclable in any specific county or city recycling program. In Palm Beach County, the only plastic that is recyclable in the blue bin are containers that are smaller than two gallons and marked with #1 through #7, except foam. This includes plastic laundry detergent jugs, soda bottles, milk jugs, water bottles, restaurant takeout containers, yogurt cups butter tubs, and Another plastic bag more. Check the side of your recycling bins that absolutely does for a full list of recyclables or go to SWA.org/ NOT go in the blue or RecycleRight. KAYAKFISHING by Brian Nelli, Contributing Writer INSHORE: Here comes the winter. Winds and colder temps will keep you wet and cold in the kayak. A good pair of waders is highly recommended to keep you warm this month. Pompano, bluefish, jacks and Spanish mackerel become more of the focus in January. I like to target areas near the inlets like the mouth of the Loxahatchee River in Jason with his first sailfish Jupiter and Sailfish Flats in Stuart. The deeper channels and sand flats make them ideal locations for the fish to swim in and out with the tides. Try working the edges of these channels with goofy jigs, small buck tails and DOA jerk baits. OFFSHORE: January is considered one of the best months to target sailfish. As always, winter months are very weather dependent. There are typically only a handful of days during this month that the weather will allow you to get in the ocean without dumping you and your gear in the process. Choose your days wisely and be sure to have all safety equipment on board. Sailfish prefer smaller baits like smaller goggle eyes and pilchards. Kingfish will still be around, scattered mahi and wahoo could make an appearance in the kayak. FRESHWATER: Depending on how cold it gets the peacock bass should be hungry. Live baits like shiners and shad will be the best bet. Clown knifefish, largemouth and sunshine bass will make their way to deeper water as the temps drop. Try fishing the deeper holes with baits near the bottom for best results. STAND UP PADDLEBOARD: SUP for New Year’ by Chris Anders Contributing Writer So it’s that time of year for resolutions and foreseeable failures of will and determination. Everyone knows that losing weight is the #1 resolution and everyone knows that they will most likely fail. For some reason, we hold on to hope that this will be the year and make that valent attempt to fulfill our resolution and join a gym. I owned health clubs for 20 years and will tell you that 60% of the people that join in January quit the gym within 60 days because they dread gym life or didn’t get results immediately. Not to mention—it’s not that fun. So in the Spirit of Auld Lang Syne, I won’t judge you for making that same old tired “Lose Weight” resolution that you’ve been making since probably puberty because I have the solution—Stand Up Paddle Boarding. Out of the top 10 resolutions, STAND UP PADDLE BOARDING can be used for 5 of them. #1 Lose Weight #5 Staying Fit& Healthy #6 Learn Something Exciting #9 Fall in Love #10 Spend More Time With Family.

2019
#1 LOSE WEIGHT • Leisure Paddling: 305-430 calories burned leisurely paddling in an hour. • SUP Yoga: With an energetic yoga flow 416-540 calories burned in an hour. SUP Yoga out performs land Yoga. • SUP Touring: paddling for a long distance at a moderate pace without stopping in-between. We do an hour of touring around Peanut Island with an average speed of 3 mph and burn approx. 615-708 calories. • SUP Racing: SUP Racing is the highest calorie expenditure in all SUP categories. When racing, your heart rate is constantly elevated for an extended period of time. For example, if the average guy was covering 5 miles in about 1 hour, he will expend about 700 – 1,100 calories in that hour. If you add crosswinds and current that total calorie burn could be even higher. #5 STAYING FIT AND HEALTHY – SUP is a full body work out: toning your abs, firming buttocks, keeping your legs lean while soaking up Vitamin D and the cleansing effect of salt water. #9 FALL IN LOVE – Studies show that couples that paddle together stay together, plus she looks good in a bikini #6 LEARN SOMETHING EXCITING – This one speaks for itself #10 SPEND MORE TIME WITH FAMILY - Life can get busy, family time IS important and we all could probably use more of it. SUP is an awesome way to spend fun quality time with your loved ones. And for those of you whose families are dysfunctional, at least you’ll have the gentle sound of the waves to tune out your [insert nagging relative]. ROAD TRIPFISHING Experienced Required! by Keith Lozott, Contributing Writer Are you thinking about planning a new fishing trip to a destination that you’ve never been to before? If the answer is yes, then I’d say we are in the same boat (no pun intended). “The Delacroix Crew” as I call them, have come together to plan a Southern Georgia trip to fill the need to get away and fish. South Georgia is only 5 or so hours away from our area and rumor has it the fishing is as good as gets. The area has huge tidal swings, oysters, shallow creeks, spartan grass flats that flood during high tides, main waterways, near shore, offshore and I presume everything in between, if I didn’t mention it. Therefore, I’d say getting some experience from an insider is a must. How you get this inside info is up to you. You can research the internet for the latest and greatest fishing reports and hope they are accurate. Buy fishing maps (Top Spot, Florida Sportsman, or whatever map has the destination you’re traveling to) that we have all used before trying to locate the hot zones that look best on the days being fished. Another way and probably the best option is to book a local guide that fishes the area every day. You can’t beat on the water experience if you can afford to get it. What we have decided to do is call a local fishing guide and explain what our motive is for the trip. Always let them know that you aren’t there to take his or her spots, but are booking them to learn the area, so that you ensure a successful trip in the future. They can teach you what the best tides are, the best baits and or live baits to use, safety on the water, where to go and what to avoid, and what to look for when surveying the terrain. I’m going to book a full day with a buddy if the funds make sense at the time. If you can afford a three quarter day or even a half day trip it may be all you need to get the tip that may makes your upcoming trip a success or failure. It will be money well spent! However, I will say no fishing trip is a failure, just a learning experience and a great day outside enjoying the surroundings with friends or family. During the slow periods in Louisiana were when I’ve been able to take in the “Marsh” and ingrained it as a part of my mind that will never leave. Whenever I travel I-95 in the Golden Isles area I always say, “I gotta fish here someday”! Now I can say I’m on the way!!! The good times that come with these trips are almost unmatched and should be experienced by all who have the itch to fish and take in the tranquility of the shallow water estuaries throughout the U.S.A. So, book a local guide if you can and get out there and experience life! Vote For Clean Water Candidates

by Christopher Sprague Jr. Angler-Team Tuppens
I have been busy with school and have not done a lot of fishing. I did go to the Lake Worth Fishing pier with my friends Jordan and Ryan and had a good time. I also went to the West Palm Beach Fishing Club BBQ. This is a year-round family tournament of who caught the biggest fish in each fish category. This is a very fun event because they give many awards to families. We saw the Tuppen’s founders, Bud and Marilyn Tuppen there. They are such an inspiration to all of us! I was there to represent Tuppen’s, as I won 1st place biggest black fin tuna. My Dad and the rest of the crew of Team Tuppen’s were in North Carolina fishing the SKA Nationals. I had caught a 28-pound tuna and that was the biggest one caught. I won a nice Penn reel and decided to give it to my best friend Jordan who was with me, as he loves fishing as much as me and didn’t have a nice reel. The event had different “games” you could play. They had a bounce house, a baseball station, and a sponsor was giving out footballs. My friend Jordan and I had a lot of fun throwing footballs everywhere. This month, I also went pier fishing with the same friend, Jordan and his brother. We didn’t catch much when we went, but we had a lot of fun. My Dad showed us where the best spot was, but there was a school of needlefish right underneath the pier. We caught around 5 needlefish and a couple grunts and mangrove snapper. Even though we didn’t catch a lot of fish, it was probably one of the most fun fishing Christopher and Mom with trips I have done. It’s always a good time Tuppen’s founders, Bud and when you are fishing with friends!! Marilyn Tuppen

Welcome to another year of Sportfishing success. The Coastal Angler Magazine will put out 12 months of articles to help you land that Trophy Fish you have been craving. At Reelintensefishing.com, January is one of our favorite times to do epic sailfishing that take place. Expect mass invasion of sails on the north winds. Most bites will take place from 100ft to 300ft depth. Live bait is a must and having a live bait boat on speed dial is the best way, but VHF channel 68 will work too. You anglers really need to order the day before your trip to ensure you get your goggle eyes. Drifting or bump trolling live baits off the kites will be the method of choice but dragging rigged baits will produce nice fish too. You will see a few Sportfish vessels Don’t let the big fishing off Palm one get away.. Beach Inlet. This is long gaff is a must! tournament time for sailfish. The Silver Sailfish Derby is my favorite and if you enjoy competition fishing, this is a great tournament to enter. Reach out to the West Palm Beach Fishing Club for info. Along with sailfish there will be wall hanging dolphin swimming with the sails, so be ready! One of the problems with big dolphin is when you’re reeling a monster in, it will fight you harder the closer to the boat it gets. These fish can see out of the water just fine, and they see you! My advice is to purchase an 8ft gaff. It’s long but it makes a difference. We have our gaffs custom made from BBW gaffs. They’re awesome! The inshore fishing heats up in the PBI. Large schools of jacks and sheepshead will be hanging around the mouth of the inlet looking for food on both tides. We have more boat traffic in January, so keep your head up and motor running for safety. Tight lines and good luck!

JUNO BEACHPIER by Carla B. Mroz, Loggerhead Marine Contributing Writer Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) and the Juno Beach Pier wish you a happy and healthy new year! We also invite you to visit the Juno Beach Pier this month for a scenic and bountiful fishing experience. There will be many opportunities for some great catches, so prepare your lures and cut bait to hook bluefish and look out for Spanish mackerel on lures and jigs. You’ll also see pompano if you use bait and jigs. Jacks and blue runners might make an appearance on your lures and bait this month and catch croakers and whiting on bait. LMC offers its year-round Private Fishing Lessons for adults and children (ages 8 and up.) One-hour lessons are offered daily; scheduled based on availability. Cost: $25/angler (with own gear); $35/angler with rental gear. Bait not included. Contact Sue Thompson at sthompson@ marinelife.org to register. Check out LMC’s Deep Blue Yoga (taught by a certified instructor) the third Saturday of every month from 10:00 – 10:45 a.m., following the Blue Friends Juno Beach Cleanup. Participants meet at Loggerhead Marinelife Center, just south of the Juno Beach Pier. If you accidentally hook a sea turtle while at the pier, here’s what to do: • Contact LMC’s 24-hour rescue hotline – (561) 603-0211 • Gently reel the slack line, keeping the turtle at the surface of the water so it can breathe • Wait for LMC’s arrival to help For LMC and Juno Beach Pier updates, follow our social media, visit marinelife.org, or call (561) 627-8280. The full-service Pier House features a snack bar as well as a variety of fishing tackle, including rental poles and bait. ON THE RANGE by Chuck Papp Contributing Writer A lot of people ask the same question after they purchase their first defensive firearm, “So what ammo do I need for this?” That question really depends on how you look at it. The two main types of bullets today are the full metal jackets (fmj) or hollow-points (hp). Now in a technical sense if you were the bad guy, being hit with a bullet is being hit. How much damage that bullet will or can cause is drastically different. Now let’s be clear on one thing, bullets when they reach their intended target do have a mind of their own and can and sometimes do perform differently then what they were designed to. In theory the fmj is a target or military projectile. The military has been using them for decades upon decades. Now some of the reason is the rules of war, if there really are any in war. The second is the idea if wounded in battle it takes soldiers off the field to attend to that wounded soldier. The fmj projectile though is still a very lethal round when used, so do not in any way dismiss it as not being effective. The only major drawback is that it can and does over penetrate a target due to its solid jacket and core. The hp projectiles now is what a lot if not all the police, security, and some of the general public will use for defense. The major difference is when the hp hits its intended target the energy will cause it to open and inflict more damage to the target and slowing its forward movement; so it does not over penetrate like the fmj does. The hp bullets do have a wide variety of nicknames given to them to seem more lethal than their name makes them. One of them is the famous “cop killer bullet”, but that’s just a media driven term used to portray something it’s not. A bullet is a bullet. I have yet had someone tell me that one will hurt more than the other. Choosing one is your preference. Your environment in which you live, how many individuals reside in your residence, the cost and which one will be more reliable in your firearm, are considerations. Hp bullets are generally twice the price and have less in a box. Hp ammo is generally 20 to 25 rounds in a box, where fmjs are 50 rounds in a box. Some firearms just were designed and work better with fmj than with the hp, but they all will work. A very well-known firearms instructor said when asked the question of what he uses was “Whatever is in my gun at the time.” That pretty much sums it up.

FISHINGFORECASTS JUPITER INLET INSHORE
Capt. Craig
By Craig Korczynski
Happy New Year! The holiday season has come to an end; hope all you anglers received new fishing tackle and gear. New year new tackle, now time for rod bending action. The cool fronts will bring brisk north east winds producing tough conditions at times for anglers, but that should not stop you from getting on the water and bending a rod. The Lake Worth Lagoon will be very active as snook, tarpon, jacks, trout, and even redfish are just a few species anglers can expect to tango with. Live mullet, pinfish and greenies work great for all these species along with artificial baits like DOA C.A.L 3” Shad Tail in glow/gold rush belly and DOA Tommy with Shrimp. Remember, work your a common baits slow and work the area you snook. are fishing thoroughly. Look for any signs of bait fish and always look for moving water. Jupiter area will be teeming with schools of big jacks. The areas to target are drop offs and deep holes. Top water lures like the Rapala skitter walk and Rapala skitter walk Jr, get the jacks excited. While fishing in the river always keep an eye out for tarpon. They are very prevalent in the deeper channels and can be seen as they roll on the surface. The tarpon are typically active as the sun is rising and setting. DOA shrimp or a DOA Terror Eyez and live baits produce best results. The size of the tarpon ranges from 5 to 50 pounds. This month snook can be found sun bathing in the shallows and near dock pilings during mid-day. Use a stealth approach while in search of the

snook and present your baits slow. Live baits will entice the snook to strike. Artificial baits like a DOA Shrimp in holographic or glow and gold rush belly; a great choice as well. The bigger snook can be found in the river in deep holes ranging from 5 to 20 feet. When fishing for these snook be sure to use your depth finder, looking for any structure or ledge where snook might be holding. A DOA Terror Eyez and DOA C.A.L. 3” Shad Tail in stark naked and pearl colors work great along with live baits dropped to the bottom. The grass flats are full of life this month. Fishing the flats is fun for the whole family, due to the wide variety of species that can be caught. Buck tail jigs tipped with shrimp; an excellent bait of choice for most anglers in this area. But nothing beats a popping cork with a DOA shrimp; it catches everything. When fishing the grass flats look for any bait in the area and work the water column from depths of 2 to 7 feet. The pompano, jacks, ladyfish, trout, and sheepshead are just a few of the species anglers will encounter while jigging. Once you find the fish try and mark that spot and work it hard. Doing this will keep Crystal with your rods bent all day long. a redfish. Well that is the fishing report for the Palm Beach and Jupiter area; hope you all enjoyed. Just remember you can’t catch them from the couch, fishing is all about the experience. Tight Lines! Captain Craig Korczynski 561-644-4371 • www. phlatsinshorefishing.com

he operations of the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park (ECLSP) have changed over its more than half century of existence. Designated a “no take marine reserve in 1986, no fishing or taking of any organism (including plants and shells) is allowed. The ECLSP is known internationally for its pristine marine environment and offers visitors exceptional diving and recreational opportunities. Recently the Marine Conservation Institute announced that the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park earned a Platinum Global Ocean Refuge Award. Joining a prestigious group of ten marine protected areas (MPAs) that comprise the Global Ocean Refuge System means that Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park meets the highest science-based standards for biodiversity protection and best practices for management. Each year, thousands of vessels visit and overnight in the ECLSP. Years ago, the Bahamas National Trust introduced a mooring and anchorage system with fees to reduce the impact. A new fee structure will come into force effective Jan. 1. Mooring fees are based on the size of the vessel and range from $20 to $150 per day. Daily/nightly anchorage fees are 50 cents or $1 per foot depending on the length of the vessel. Dive fees are $10 per diver. For more information, visit www.bnt.bs/exuma-cays-land-seapark/.

Gulf Red Snapper Meetings Slated FWC photo by Allen Peirce he Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council is holding public hearings and a webinar to solicit public comments on Draft Amendment 50—State Management of Recreational Red Snapper. This amendment would, if approved, allow state management in future years and would provide flexibility to the Gulf states to set the recreational red snapper fishing season and potentially other management measures. Dates and locations for the meetings are as follows (unless noted below, all meetings are from 6-9 p.m. local time): • Jan. 7 – Fort Myers: Hyatt Place Fort Myers at the Forum, 2600 Champion Ring Road. • Jan. 8 – Saint Petersburg: Hilton St. Pete Carillon Park, 950 Lake Carillon Drive. • Jan. 15 – Key West: Harvey Government Center, 1200 Truman Ave., 2nd Floor; *Hosted by FWC. • Jan. 17 – Webinar: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/2288573373994739724. • Jan. 23 – Tallahassee: Farris Bryant Building, 620 S. FRESHWATER
Since 2015, Frabill has continued to set the quiet standard in bucket conversion. The Frabill Whisper Quiet Aerator system is a portable, aeration design that provides the utmost discretion when fishing with live bait. Constructed with 75 years of experience, the Whisper Drive Aeration Motor has been specifically designed and tested to keep saltwater baitfish and crustaceans healthy and active while emitting minimal sound. With a couple of batteries, the Whisper Quiet Aerator converts any size cooler or bucket into an oxygen-rich livewell. Frabill’s top-of-the-line signature yellow air stone creates enough bubbles to effectively aerate up to 15 gallons of water. As a result of its over-engineered rugged design, Frabill’s Whisper Quiet Aerator has a long shelf life. The aeration system includes premium water-resistant internal parts that help prevent corrosion and won’t let an angler down. Never be surprised by battery rot again.

Surprising Winter is the Best Planting Time
I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly
at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste
better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature. Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant. Let’s Grow Together. Greg Ison, Ison’s Nursery and Vineyards, 800733-0324, www.isons.com
