Vibe obviously put a lot of thought into their new fishing kayak. By combining features kayak anglers customarily had to choose one over the other, the Shearwater 125 is the most versatile fishing kayak on the water. This streamlined fishing vessel has an open deck as well as center-console storage. It’s comfortable and stable with a high-low seat, a standing perch and ample floor standing room. Rudder steering is pedal and hand controlled. It can be rigged for paddle, pedal and motor power with Power Pole mounts. There is open bow storage for easy access as well as hull rigging access. Four flush rod holders are complemented by four horizontal rod holders. It’s got a tunnel hull and a keel for maximum stability and speed. And all of that is just the beginning of a long list of well-designed features. With innovation that provides all of the functionality anglers look for in a kayak, Vibe’s Shearwater 125 begs the question, “Why choose when you can have it all?”

Bixpy Kayak Outboard Kit Looking to extend your range and save energy for fishing? The Bixpy Thruster is an electric outboard motor designed to fit any kayak or other small boat. It reaches speeds of up to 7 mph, opening up a whole world of opportunity for folks who fish from small boats. This extremely powerful, efficient, light and portable propulsion system helps you fight wind and current, explore new places and extend trips. A single charge allows for up to 10 hours at trolling speed, and at full speed it will push a kayak to about 7 mph for up to 75 minutes of continuous use. The Bixpy Outboard Kit, which includes a thruster and an outboard Power Pack is emission-free, weighs only 9 pounds and is easy to mount, operate and transport. All components are waterproof and safe for fresh and saltwater use. This little outboard turns your kayak into a micro-skiff, allowing you to go farther and faster, wherever the fish are.

My Coast Outdoors Knockin Tail My Coast Outdoors, the Houston-based lure maker that brought us its innovative Controlled Descent line of soft plastics, has released another one-of-a-kind lure to the industry. The Knockin Tail paddletail swimbait made its debut at ICAST 2019, and it raised eyebrows with a unique design that’s proven to stimulate feeding behavior in fresh and saltwater fish.
COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM
2019 HOTTEST NEW FISHING GEAR Every angler knows the benefits of sound and vibration paired with visual stimulation to convince fish to feed. With the Knockin Tail, there’s a rattle built into the tail. Not only does this eliminate the need to purchase or insert rattles, it outperforms traditional noisemakers, which only produce sound when the rod is twitched. This lure puts out a continuous fish-attracting sound with every flutter of the tail. Whether it’s twitched, bounced, on the fall or with a steady retrieve, the Knockin Tail rattles to stimulate the lateral line. Beneath that innovation, Knockin Tail is also a carefully designed soft plastic that’s as durable as it is action packed.

Nauticus EZ BOARD
With its EZ BOARD removable boat boarding assist handle, Nauticus designed a simple solution for those of us not blessed with the agility of a spider monkey. Made of strong and durable, corrosion and UV resistant PVC, the EZ BOARD is the handhold you need to safely and easily board the boat. It slides right into most flush-mounted rod holders, which makes it as convenient as it is helpful. When it’s time to board, insert the EZ BOARD into the rod holder and twist to lock it. When everyone is safely aboard, slide it back out of the rod holder and stow it. It can be oriented while on the water to provide a handhold for boarding or disembarking from either a dock or the swim platform, depending on where it’s needed. Made in the USA, the EZ BOARD is lightweight, requires no special tools and comes with a five-year replacement warranty. It is available in 36” and 48” models, and there’s even a 24” model to help with getting in or out of a kayak.

LIVETARGET Flutter Sardine With its new Injected Core Technology, LIVETARGET hauled in the hardware at ICAST 2019, winning three best of category awards. The idea behind these lures is to show a realistic baitfish profile to fish, while hiding the unnatural mechanical elements that give lures their action. The ICT Flutter Sardine has the enticing twitch and falling action of a standard jigging spoon, but its exceptionally realistic profile sets it apart from everything else on the market. Injected Core Technology enables a lifelike sardine profile, while the Exo-Skin gives the lure its signature flutter action. Perfect for a host of saltwater fishing applications with a saltwater-grade hook, it’s available in five weights and six colors.

This vehicle-mounted rod storage solution allows anyone from recreational anglers to professionals to arrive at their fishing destination with baitcast, spinning and spincast rods and reels intact, fully-rigged and ready to fish. Two aircraft grade anodized aluminum tubes hold up to six fully rigged casting or spinning rods up to eight feet in length, and a locking reel housing area easily fits most baitcasting and small to medium spinning reels. Protective polypropylene liners inside the Rod Vault eliminate rod on metal contact, protecting guides and rod tips from abrasion. A large entry tube accommodates initial line guides up to 2.5 inches out to 40 inches from the base of the rod. It’s perfect for rigs deisgned for bass, inshore and other warmwater fishing. Included mounting brackets secure the Rod Vault ST to the top of any vehicle with rooftop crossbars and are built to accommodate almost any factory or aftermarket crossbar design, including aero and square tubes up to 3.5 inches wide and 1.5 inches thick. An innovative t-slot mounting design and movable tube clamps provide flexible options to fit most vehicles. The Rod Vault ST was specifically over-engineered to keep valuable equipment safe in almost any circumstance. Stainless steel hardware ensures the Rod Vault ST will remain rust free no matter the fishing environment, and fiberglass-infused nylon construction protects the reel housing, mounting hardware and aerodynamic nose cone from UV degradation. Whether storing rods to fish before or after work or traveling across the country on an epic fishing trip, the Rod Vault ST is deisgned to keep gear safe.

Soft Steel USA Fluoro-Stretch Line Soft Steel USA has come up with a fishing line that might finally end the perennial debate over monofilament vs. fluorocarbon. With its new stretchable fluorocarbon, Soft Steel USA found the meeting point that provides the benefits of both fluoro and mono. It’s a real game changer. Soft Steel’s new Fluoro-Stretch line is a 100 percent fluorocarbon line with the stretchable properties of monofilament. It has the abrasion resistance, low visibility, sensitivity and toughness of fluoro as well as the tighter knots and shock absorption of monofilament. Tight knots have always been an issue with fluorocarbon, especially when it comes to line-to-line knots. The new Fluoro-Stretch allows for a tighter cinch, which elevates knot strength to 95%, which is much stronger than standard fluorocarbon lines. Available in breaking strengths of 10 to 150 pounds, the new FluoroStretch will be available in 25-yard spools and coils as well as 5-yard single-shot lengths.

t’s snook season in Florida, and despite a closure to harvest for much of the state’s west coast, the next couple months offer great action in the world’s best location to target the state’s most iconic inshore/ nearshore gamefish. Snook strike aggressively, fight hard and grow large—into the 20and 30-pound range of true slob snook. The Florida state record weighed 45.75 pounds. It was caught by Heather Lynn Conners near Sebastian in 2015. But even the slot fish—those in the 28- to 33-inch range you’re allowed to keep one of—will test your gear. It’s one of the most explosive and exciting gamefish on the planet. Snook are extremely temperature sensitive, and tactics vary according to the season. From the beaches and nearshore, where they spend their summers, they will move over the next few months seeking warmer water in sheltered winter haunts. First, you’ll find them in deep water adjacent to the shallow flats. Then, driven by cooling sea temps, they’ll push all the way up into the creeks and rivers, residential canals, warm water discharge from power plants, upper estuaries, and anywhere they can find suitable water conditions. The harsher the winter, the more pronounced the move. Fall through winter is the time when big, line-snapping snook will hunker down in areas that might seem highly unlikely to the uninformed. With the mild winters of the last decade, much has been made of the northward spread of snook. A tropical species, they historically thrived only on the southern coasts of Florida, up to about to about Sebastian in the Atlantic and Tampa in the Gulf. However, in recent years, snook have set up shop farther north, in areas that would have been unheard of a decade ago. These days, it’s possible to target snook at Homosassa and farther north along the Nature Coast of the Gulf and up toward Jacksonville in the Atlantic. They have also shown up much farther north. This summer, Coastal Angler Magazine reported on a juvenile snook caught in a cast net way up in Winyah Bay, South Carolina. First timers seeking to do battle with snook should hire a captain. Along with being big and strong, large female snook are notoriously smart and usually require specialized tackle, techniques and a good deal of patience. Their tendency to hole up in the structure of mangroves, rocks and bridge and pier pilings makes break-offs common, and the expertise of a good guide increases your chances of actually landing one. The good news is, snook have been relatively unmolested by anglers during the closed season of the last three months. Now is as good a time as any to fool a big cow nosed into the current under some residential canal dock. They feed best in low light of the early mornings and late evenings when there’s a rising or falling tide. The stronger tides around the new and full moons are optimal for catching them. Keep that in mind when booking your trip to Florida’s snook fisheries, and you could find yourself experiencing the fishing trip of a lifetime.

FLY BY NIGHT
I
By Will Schmidt
made my cast; the fly dropped just on the edge of the light shining into snook-filled water. I could see my fly tracking nearly perfectly as it passed in front of several nice fish waiting for unsuspecting prey. Then the fly swam into darkness without a glance from the linesiders. I continued stripping so as to pick the fly up and cast again. Suddenly my line came tight. I made the strip-set to an explosion, as a 3-foot tarpon erupted from the water, crashing into the dock and throwing my fly amidst a shower of scales and water. That night changed my thoughts on fly fishing forever.
When it comes down to it, sight fishing is the way to go for me. Unfortunately, I don’t have the luxury of a guide to pole me around the flats of Marco Island, but I have found that at night the docks hold all kinds of fish from snook to tarpon, snapper to trout, and they usually are open to feeding on a fly. Of course there are some things to keep in mind. First, stealth is everything. I like to approach using my electric motor and make sure I keep my distance. Many fish will hang at the edge of the light in the shadows, as was the case of that tarpon. In fact, I’ve caught many just out of the shadows at night. Boat position is also critical. You need to be far enough away to not spook any of the fish, seen or unseen. You also need a good casting angle to the fish. That means getting your fly in front of them and having it work past them in a natural way. I’ll use the electric motor to keep me in position. This also gives me the advantage of moving away from the dock when a large fish is hooked and trying to pull me into barnacle-covered pilings. When there are a lot of fish present, I often anchor or stake up to let things settle. It also gives me time to retie leaders between fish. Now that you are in position, what do you use? A majority of my fish have been caught on a white Clouser. All-black Clousers create a highly visible silhouette and are deadly, as well. Either emulates the ever-present glass minnows. Of late, I’ve upped the size of my flies and have found that larger baitfish patterns with bigger profile often get seen easier and thus get more takers. Above all, be respectful. When you find someone kind enough to leave those fish-attracting lights on, always do the right thing. Never go on the dock, and keep quite. Much of this fishing is done late at night, and dock owners who turn their lights off will tell you it’s because of noisy fishermen. Will Schmidt is a seasoned tournament angler and has been writing about fishing for more than two decades.

FLORIDA SCALLOP REPORT: PASCO COUNTY DOMINATES
By CAM Staff. Pictured Charles Cassino
S
calloping season is a big deal on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Every year during short and carefully managed seasons, divers and snorklers are set free to harvest these tasty little morsels along a nearly 800mile stretch of coastline in state waters from Gulf County to Pasco County. Beginning in July and stretching through September, the open season dates vary across five regions determined by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Some years, picking up a limit of bay scallops out of grassy shallows is as easy as an Easter egg hunt. This summer many scallopers were asking, “Where are the scallops?”
2
FLORIDA
I
SEPTEMBER 2019
I
The normally predictable Crystal River and Homosassa scallop grounds weren’t as predictable or productive this year as in years past. Some reports indicate the bulk of productive scallop grounds in those areas were in exceptionally deep waters this year. Experts explain that the normal west to easterly storms that drive scallops into easily accessible shallow waters did not occur this year. But wait; News Flash, scallops certainly showed up on the southern end of the state’s scalloping waters. In Pasco County, Fla.—the region aptly known as Florida’s Sports Coast—our editors quickly limited out in 3 feet of water and found these waters to be exceptionally productive at every drop. Whether it was the 25-year harvest closure or favorable currents, Pasco County’s limited open season was a must-dive on Florida’s west coast this year. The 2019 season marked the second year in a row that FWC opened the scallop season for Pasco County, and nature certainly supported the decision. Proving to be an unbeatable destination for bay scallops—as evidenced in fistfuls—Florida’s Sports Coast’s rich scallop beds turned out to be the perfect place to score the tasty saltwater bivalves. It is very exciting to see what Pasco County’s continued seasons have in store. In anticipation of continued growth in popularity with the returned underwater adventure, Pasco County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources is concentrating efforts to expand and improve county boat ramps to provide more trailer parking and better launch experiences for both local and out-of-town scallopers. Moving forward, Pasco County’s annual scallop season will start the third Friday in July and last for 10 days. Coastal Angler Magazine offers special thanks to Experience Florida’s Sports Coast along with local charter captains, Mermaid Slayers, Captain Mark Dillingham and Florida Backwater Charters for their gracious invitation and superb hospitality in helping us experience all that Pasco County has to offer the saltwater enthusiast. For more information on Florida’s Sports Coast, or to plan your 2020 scalloping adventure visit www.flsportscoast.com.

GAUGESAVER RESTORES SUN-FADED EQUIPMENT
Do the sun-damaged gauges on your boat make it difficult to see how much fuel is left? Restore those LCD gauges instead of shelling out hundreds of bucks to replace them. COST: If you’re a budget boater, repairing versus replacing is a no-brainer. Gauges can be restored to like-new condition for a quarter of the price of replacement. AVAILABILITY: Suzuki/ iCommand/LMF 400 gauges are really hard, if not impossible, to find. Have an early Mercury Optimax and wonder how you’ll find replacements for those SmartCraft gauges? Just need a new lens for your later SmartCraft MultiGauges? We’re the only company that has them, and at great effort we’ve reproduced and improved them.

Offshore fishing has been hit or miss this past month, hopefully September will bring much needed changes to the water conditions! Time is of the essence; when you’re planning a fishing trip this month, get out there as early as possible to catch the dawn bite! The surface water temps warm up quickly during the first hour of daybreak therefore it is important to have lines in the water before the fish swim to deeper water to escape the heat. Within the next few weeks the mullet run or fall bait migration will take place, which will be fairly easy bait to cast net in the ICW. In the meantime, large numbers of threadfins and pilchards can be found around the mouth of Boynton Beach and Palm Beach Inlets. Another exciting fish to target this month will be the wahoo! Last month, the full moon produced a good number of wahoo. The sharks have been terrible lately, eating all the fish you hook when bottom fishing or drifting. Targeting wahoo on the troll is a nice change of pace and you cover a lot of ground. The impending September full moon will give you another opportunity to catch one if you haven’t already. If you like to high speed troll, I would recommend using Ballyhood lures such as the Banshee Cowbell or Wahoo Express Lures. When the conditions are favorable and wahoo are thick, they will attack any lure you are pulling past them. Wahoo fishing gives you an incredible adrenaline rush, especially when you feel the head shakes while reeling in the fish and hand lining them through the transom door. For the anglers that prefer reef or wreck fishing, this month should also produce a good bottom bite. I would suggest using a ‘sinking line’ which means a 15ft, 60 to 80lb leader on a swivel, and a heavy sinker to hold the bottom. The hook you use depends on the type of bait you prefer to fish the bottom with. When fishing on one of these structures, you will catch big amberjack, assorted snapper including nice sized mutton snapper along with a few groupers or even a wahoo. Inshore fishing should be on FIRE with the mullet run right around the corner! You can use mullet to fish for snook, tarpon, jacks and trout. Small finger mullets are also perfect for snook, which are being caught and released throughout the day around the inlets right now as the spawning season comes to an end. Good luck anglers! Please check out my YouTube channel, Darcizzle Offshore, for more fishing tips, tricks and to go on fishing adventures with me! Until next time, be safe and Keep On Catchin’! Ask me questions about fishing & see my recent FISHING VIDEOS on YouTube! https://www.youtube.com/darcizzleoffshore

SOUTH COUNTY INSHORE & FRESHWATER By Capt. Patrick Smith, Contributing Writer
Summer is finally winding down although it might not feel like it yet temperature wise. Snook will be moving from the inlets back to the bridges, docks, and channels where they normally live. This month normally starts the trickling of mullet schools down the coast ahead of the major migration. This will lead to some awesome action on tarpon, jacks, snook, and sharks. Catching the run early is best because the fish are still excited about it and your bait will have an easier time getting noticed before the big schools show up. As for rigging, I prefer to use a heavy spinning outfit with 65 lb. braid and a 3ft 60 lb. leader finished off with an 8-10/0 circle hook, it’s very simple and will get the job done. In the freshwater it’s alligator hunting season and while we are on the lake looking for gators there will be plenty of time to catch some nice largemouths. I like to use a Senko and fish it slow in the grass. Early morning topwater should get some action also; a couple favorites are a Spook Junior and Zoom Horny Toad; the color will depend on the weather. On the Lake Ida/Osbourne chain the peacock and clown bite should remain strong. Live bait is the best for both, but you could score using a jerk bait or rattle trap. The sunshine bass bite has been awesome as well and should only get better. Jake and Alex with a beautiful sailfish.

25th Annual Mark Gerretson Memorial Fishing Tournament By Tim Knapp, Contributing Writer The Captain’s meeting was held on August 8th at the Delray Beach Elks Lodge. 19 boats entered the tournament this year. Lots of great prizes were given away and a significant amount of money was raised for the various charities that the tournament supports. The weigh-in was held at Veterans Park, on August 10th. Some very nice fish were brought to the weigh-in. It was also clear that the local population of sharks were celebrating Shark Week, as numerous anglers reported donating their fish to the sharks as they Grand Prize Dolphin were being reeled in. The weather stayed very calm until the late afternoon. As always, we had great prizes donated by our fantastic supporters and sponsors. A memorial for Deena Chapman, Mark’s sister, who was a long time committee member and passed in January was held on Sunday. The tournament was started by Mark Gerretson as the Delray Beach Jaycees Fishing Tournament to raise money for the Delray Police’s Kids and Cops program. Mark ran the tournament for 11 years before he passed in 2005. At that time, his friends and family made a promise to keep the tournament going, and to continue to raise money for a variety of charities that support the Delray Beach Community. In 2016, the tournament became a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. All committee members are volunteers. The committee works throughout the year to plan the tournament, identify worthy causes, and disburse the money to those in need. Over the years the tournament has raised over $150,000 for local charities and provided help and hope to many children and families during tough times. The committee members are: Tim Knapp (Chairman), Patricia Gerretson (Mark’s mom), Keith Kern, Gary (Falcon) Musial, Jen Buce, Paul Shersty, Chris Reich, Jim Gerretson, and Brittany Gerretson Roberts. (Website at www.mgmft.net and friend us on Facebook at Mark Gerretson Memorial Fishing First Place Kingfish Tournament) Next year is the 26th Annual of the tournament’s founding, and we’re already working on plans to have bigger prizes and more boats entered. We are counting on the community to help spread the word and help us benefit the Delray Beach Community. We are looking for additional committee members to help us continue the work that the tournament has been doing. If you are interested and can help with advertising the tournament, working the tournament, talking to sponsors, or in other ways, please reach out to us at: tournament_ committee@mgmft.net or call Tim (561) 789-0814.

The River Center Hooks Another Successful Tournament The Jr. Angler Fishing Tournament returned for its sixth year this summer with 42 anglers participating in the 5-week competition. This tournament spans multiple weeks to allow anglers time to catch as many fish as possible. Points are awarded not only for the number of fish caught, but also for the number of different species represented in the submissions. The more fish you catch and the more species you catch, the better your chances are to win! These innovative guidelines encourage contestants to spend time throughout the summer exploring the diversity of habitats and fish species in our Palm Beach and Martin Counties, all while honing their fishing skills. Our participants reeled in over 3,000 fish! In hopes of accommodating all interested participants, both fresh and salt water photo submissions were accepted. Some kids enjoyed fishing from the lake in their backyard for a trophy bass, while others preferred heading offshore in hopes of reeling in snappers. It was important for our tournament to cater to each angler’s preferences. The excitement of the tournament culminated in a family fish fry at the River Center on August 9th, where the winners were announced, and prizes awarded. A hearty congratulation goes out to the grand prize winner, Cameron Burlage who managed to reel in and photograph more than 416 fish and caught 45 different species! With such tremendous turnout and interest in the tournament, the River Center hopes to continue building on this accomplishment. We are already looking forward to next year’s competitive and educational summer adventure. Grand Prize Winner: Cameron Burlage The River Center would like to thank our 2019 Sponsors for their support of our Most Days Fished in Tournament Winner: Reid Robertson. COASTALKIDS My Fishing Adventures
By Christopher Sprague, Jr. Angler-Team Tuppens, Contributing Writer Hello Anglers, I hope you all have been fishing a lot. We went to the Bahamas this month! We stayed at Old Bahama Bay at the West End for 3 days. While we were driving over, we saw a flock of birds about 30 miles out. We stopped and threw a cedar plug and a ballyhoo out. Within Yellow eye snapper in West End, Grand Bahamas 5 minutes we found the school of fish, both rigs got hit and we had 2 fish on! My friend Jordan took one rod and I took the other. I let him get his fish in first, so we didn’t get tangled. We both got our fish in and saw that they were 2 small blackfin tuna. We got enough for one meal because we knew we were going to get a lot of fish the next few days. Once we were cleared through customs, we got our room situated and then my friend and I went snorkeling. We saw many fish including eels, turtles, and other weird looking fish. The next day we decided to deep drop around 15 miles off West End. On our first drop, once we hit the bottom, we got a fish on! Since it was around 800 feet deep, we had an electric reel to do the work for us. Even with it, reeling at full speed, it took a little over 5 minutes to get a few yellow-eye snapper in the boat. We repeated this for the next few hours, hoping to get a queen snapper. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the queen snapper that we wanted and started to head back to our hotel because big storms were coming. We had an amazing dinner that night of fresh yellow eye snapper. The next day we tried to catch conch near an island with stingrays that swam right up to you. We only got 3 conchs, so we headed into the island with the stingrays to have lunch. After we ate, we watched the stingrays for a little bit and decided to look for a wreck that we could snorkel. After 30 minutes of searching, we finally found the wreck that was loaded with fish. We snorkeled there for a while and then headed back in and cooked up the conch and some fish. Sadly, that was our last day, so we had to go back home. We had a great time in the Bahamas and saw many cool things.

STAND UP PADDLEBOARD:
Make Your First SUP a Touring Board By Chris Anders, Contributing Writer Touring Boards are a must for every true SUP enthusiast. Touring boards are great for exploring long distances on calm waters. People often get the wrong idea about touring paddle boards. Most of my customers are new to paddle boarding and get intimidated by it resembling the lines of a race board. Most newbies don’t know what type of board they need, and many choose the most basic, smallest, and least expensive board against the advice of a seasoned rider. A casual rider would really enjoy a touring board and would possibly try long distance or racing. Touring boards give you a sense of stability and with stability comes confidence. One of the major benefits of a touring board is that they are displacement hulls which equates to speed. So, if you don’t want to be behind the pack and want to look like a seasoned veteran, a touring board is for you. Some other great options that touring boards offer are a lot of leash plugs. I own a 12’ Whaleback Touring Board and it has 14 leash plugs front to back where I can convert this into also a fishing board. In the front I have a fishing set up with rod holders and gear bag, and in the rear I have a cooler, plus the GoPro mount. I have also raced this board in small local races. Characteristics of a Touring Board: • Displacement Hull. The first and most obvious characteristic of a touring or race board is going to the pointed nose which is referred to as a displacement hull. This will look similar to the shape of a boat and allows the board to slice thru the water for increased stability and speed. This is most desirable in flat water conditions but also allows the board to cut thru chop and give you a more powerful push with each paddle stroke. • Narrow Profile. Most touring or race boards will be slightly more narrow than a traditional paddle board, this sleek design decreases drag and overall weight allowing the board to move faster and be more fluid in the water. Common widths in these types of boards are anywhere from 25”-32”. • Longer Length. Touring and race boards can range in length based on what they are built to do. A race trainer (shaped like a race board, but shorter) could start around 10’ long and actual race boards can go up to 18’ with the most common race sizes being 12’6” or 14’0”. • More Volume/Thicker Profile. Since touring and race boards are generally narrower than traditional boards, they make up for that lost volume in their thickness. This is also the reason why these narrow boards still feel so stable. Chris Anders, CEgO Palm Beach Boat Club and Paddleboard Shop 255 E. 22nd Ct. KAYAKFISHING
FISHINGFORECAST PALM BEACH IN & OFFSHORE By Capt. Weston Russell Contributing Writer
The dolphin fishing will be in full swing offshore this month. Most of them will be in the 10 to 20 lb. range, but there will be a chance for some bigger ones. The trick is to head out to the deep and look for structure like weed lines or floating trash. When you see small jacks and other bait fish, then you know you’re on the right structure. When you find a few dolphin, remember to leave them in the water to bring the others close. Have a few Daiwa spinning setups with popper plugs to cast out to the shy fish. It’s always a good idea to have a wahoo setup too. You may just find a pallet or maybe a floating tree loaded with life. When you’re out there in the deep it’s not a bad idea to make a few swordfish drops. There’s been boats catching them on the first drop down. The depths from 1200 and 1600 ft. have been productive. Don’t forget a couple of gaffs to get the job done. We use BBW gaffs. They stick deep and hold on long. For the reef anglers, the spots to the north of the condos will hold good snapper fishing. Chunk bait will get the best bites. The rig of choice will be a knocker or a dropper rig. If the fishing is slow, try different depths. Don’t give up too soon, they could turn on at any time. Tight lines! Captain Weston Russell 561-310-2690 • www.reelintensefishing.com
By Brian Nelli, Contributing Writer INSHORE: The flats and inlets are holding large amounts of glass minnows. Using lures that imitate these baits and you should find the bite. Fishing the inlets, surf, and bridges continue to be a great option. Snook will be running the closest trough to the beach looking to pick off anything in the surf. DOA Jerk Baits and Paddle Tails will work great. Next option is to fish your local bridge at night. A well-lit bridge with a dominate shadow line is best. Work a bait of your choice in and out of the shadows Matt with his and you should pick off a few. first sailfish. OFFSHORE: Kingfish will be in decent numbers with 10-15 pound fish the norm. Sailfish will be in the mix as well. Smaller goggle eyes and blue runners on a flat line will work to lure them in. September Ian with a stud has been a good month for us in the peacock bass. past with catching wahoo. Try running baits deeper in the water column with a downrigger. Blackfin and skipjack tuna will come through in small schools. Look to target them with smaller vertical jigs and trolling feathers. FRESHWATER: The peacock bass will start to move off their shallow spawning areas, back to deeper waters and structures this month. Look to pick off a few with jerk baits and live shiners. Clown knifefish will be in the mix with the moving peacocks. Sailfish Marina Spiny Lobsterfest 2019 By Ilene Wallace, Co-Publisher
The 7th annual Sailfish Marina Spiny Lobsterfest was an amazing event! If you have not been, I strongly suggest you put it on your calendar for next year. This year’s Spiny Lobsterfest beneficiary was The West Palm Beach Fishing club. It took place on the brand new Tiki Lawn adjacent to the restaurant. Coastal Angler Magazine Palm Beach County was a sponsor and had a booth set up at the event along with Leonard Bryant Photography and other great vendors such as High Point Paddle, Code Rum, One of a Kind Metal Sculptures, Kudu Klips, The Bongo House Island Art, Second Chance Puppies & Kitten Rescue, Binka, Hook & Tackle, Artwork by Steve Diossy, Scales, Due South Brewing Co., Pelagic, Get Wet Watersports, Woof Gang Bakery, and many more. Let’s not forget about why we were all there, the lobster! Visitors dined on lobster tails, lobster tacos, lobster rolls, lobster ceviche, lobster ravioli, and lobster mac and cheese; each one so delicious I can’t even pick a favorite. While adults enjoyed listening to Big Vince and the Phat Cats, the food, great cocktails, participating in the silent auctions and raffles; kids had a blast enjoying snow cones, bounce houses, water slides, and a blow up ax throwing attraction all supplied by Jupiter Bounce. The fun didn’t stop there, even pets got in on the action in the Sailfish Marina’s signature “Lobster Pet Costume Contest”. Dogs of all sizes, birds, goats, and even a huge tortoise came to show off their lobster costumes. This year’s winner was Ziggy the Shih Tzu who took home the grand prize gift basket from Woof Gang Bakery and a weekend stay at Sailfish Marina Resort!

FISHINGFORECASTS Capt. Craig
JUPITER INLET INSHORE
Snook up close with a DOA C.A.L. 3” shad tail.
By Craig Korczynski, Contributing Writer
The month of September offers unique fishing, as the mullet run invades the Palm Beaches. Big schools of mullet migrating south push into our intracoastal and along our beaches. These big schools of mullet trigger predator fish like snook, tarpon, jacks, sharks, drum, snapper and many other species to feed heavily. Snook can be targeted in the inlets, beaches, grass flats, along seawalls, and docks. Top water plugs like a Heddon Super Spook or Spook Jr. are excellent choices for surface strikes. DOA C.A.L. 4” Jerk Baits and DOA Bait Busters Rob with entice snook to strike near surface and sub surface. The mullet schools are great areas to locate snook, typically his first morning and evenings are the best times to fish. Bridges and docks provide plenty of action; channel edges produce ever tarpon plenty of drag screaming action as well. The snook may gather in pods at times, many of the bigger female snook are caught on on the outside of these pods. The average size of the snook ranges from 5 to 25 pounds. a Daiwa The tarpon offer heart pounding action for anglers, with acrobatic leaps on the water’s surface after devouring Backbay a love mullet on the surface. Many of the tarpon are schooled 3000. together and can be seen rolling on the surface. The average size of the tarpon ranges from 10 to 80 pounds. The best bait to use for the tarpon is live mullet or pin fish. Artificial enthusiast, top water Heddon Spook Jr., DOA Bait Busters, and DOA C.A.L. 4” Jerk Baits are all great baits for the silver king. The key to catching tarpon is staying in front of them, staying quiet, and presenting the bait in a natural presentation. The flats and ICW are great areas to target snook, jacks, goliath grouper, drum, and many other species for rod bending action. Structure areas or potholes along grass flats, hold bait schools where predator fish will follow. For those anglers who want steady action, nothing beats a live mullet, just cast one out along drop offs or structures and hold on tight. Nothing beats seeing a predator fish explode on a live bait, it puts a smile on everyone’s face. Well that is the fishing report for September, hope you all enjoyed, remember any day on the water is a good day. Tight Lines! Captain Craig Korczynski 561-644-4371 • phlatsinshorefishing.com

Not long ago I stopped in one of those large chain stores to get a few freshwater fishing lures. I always stroll through the hunting departments to see what they have. Upon walking past the hunting counter, I heard a couple of the employees and customers having a friendly debate on what is the best choice in ammunition for this upcoming hunting season. We are basically referring to deer, hog, and bear. After listening, I concluded that as far as technology of modern hunting ammo goes, we are not going to advance any more than we already have. You must wonder how the pioneers survived with only lead balls. Well the answer is simple. They knew how to shoot. There are so many different types of bullets available to today’s sportsmen that it is confusing, and is there really much difference in them? There are plastic tip bullets, heat treated, fancy molecular bonded bullets, bullets that are coated, bullets that are all copper that open with fancy petals, bullets that basically fly themselves to the target (well maybe that’s a little much), the military has stuff like that though. So, does this all mean that you have a better chance in taking your deer? No, if you can’t hit your target then what good are those fancy projectiles. JUNO BEACHPIER By Carla B. Mroz, Loggerhead Marinelife Center, Contributing Writer With summer over and temperatures starting to cool down a bit, it’s a great time to check out the Juno Beach Pier for some abundant saltwater fishing! Snook will be available once again, so be sure to use cut and live bait for those. Jacks can also be caught on bait. Use cut and live bait as well as lures for blue runners. Keep an eye out for Spanish mackerel too (use bait and lures). Catch mangrove snapper on bait (live sardines and shrimp), and as always, catch croakers, whiting, and sand perch with bait. If you know an aspiring angler, Loggerhead Marinelife Center offers its year-round private Fishing Lessons for adults and children (ages 8 and up.) One-hour lessons are offered daily; scheduled based on availability. Cost: $25/angler (with own gear); $35/angler with rental gear. Bait not included. Email reservations@marinelife.org to register. Sea turtle nesting season runs through October 31. If you accidentally hook a sea turtle while at the Pier, here’s what to do: • Contact LMC’s 24-hour rescue hotline – (561) 603-0211 • Gently reel the slack line, keeping the turtle at the surface of the water so it can breathe • Wait for LMC’s arrival to help For LMC and Juno Beach Pier updates, follow our social media, visit marinelife.org, or call (561) 627-8280. The full-service Pier House features a snack bar as well as a variety of fishing tackle, including rental poles and bait. Munyon Island Flats a Possible Paradise Lost? By Keith Lozott, Contributing Writer I grew up in Lake Park, Florida and learned to fish all around Munyon Island. This beautiful place is the playground that kept me out of trouble and off the streets. I would cut lawns to make some extra cash as a kid and buy barracuda rigs, Zara Spooks, and bucktails at Lott Brothers and Seven Seas tackle shops. I’d then ride my bike over the Blue Heron Bridge to go wade fish all along the shoreline at what is now the last and thriving saltwater flat from North Palm Beach to Miami. The stretch of shoreline is just north of Pine Point and goes all the way to the preserve or dead man’s curve as we called it growing up. I can’t begin to tell you all the species of fish that we caught through the years. The area has beautiful grass flats, shallow areas, deeper edges, mangroves, and everything you want as an inshore fisherman. I’ve caught snook, redfish on occasion, seatrout (few and far between), large mangrove snapper, barracuda, tarpon, bonefish, all size ranges of jacks and not to mention the bait schools that thrive in the area. Now for the sad news that can hopefully get turned into good news with the participation of environmentalists, politicians, local and seasonal residents!!! It has come to my attention that an investment banker/developer has decided to “forcefully” gain approval to develop the land that is currently underwater and now the only aquatic preserve of its kind left in South Florida. The owner wants to bulkhead the flats and fill it in in order to create more housing north of Pine Point. This will be an ecological devastation to an area that doesn’t have spare aquatic preserve left to allow fish to grow and thrive. As a real estate professional myself I understand development, profit, tax generation, etc. but there is a line that we can’t cross if we want our state and local economies to thrive. Saltwater fishing contributes billions to our economy every year and if we want this to continue, we must preserve these sensitive areas. There is a reason that the development of this area stopped at Pine Point and that is people finally realized what was being done to the environment by continuing the practice of filling in aquatic preserve. Allowing this development or turning a blind eye to it isn’t sustainable to the ecology of the Lake Worth Lagoon and would be a tragedy. Today more than ever in our state water quality is a huge issue with politicians being elected as a result of poor management in the past. Let’s learn from our past and the issues that have negatively affected sensitive areas across our state and stop this NOW from happening again. Hopefully more kids in the future will have a chance to fish what is left of the ONLY flats left in North Palm Beach. Keith Lozott Avid Angler and advocate for the Great State of Florida

DEXTER: THE PERFECT KNIFE;
TWO CENTURIES IN THE MAKING
In October, Dexter will release its new EDGE GUARD blade guard, which is specifically designed to protect the blades of Dexter knives.
N
ext time you’re on a charter boat, notice the knife the captain uses to cut bait. When you’re on the docks, stop at the cleaning table to see what the mates use to fillet fish. Chances are you’ll see the pros using Dexter knives. The iconic white handle is a dead giveaway. Dexter has been making purpose-built knives for more than 200 years. Steeped in the traditions of New England and its historic fisheries, the Southbridge, Massachusetts company produces American-made quality that is legendary among those who rely on Capt. Steve Nagy, who guides their equipment to make a living. For more than two centuries, Dex- out of Bonita Springs, Fla., uses Dexter knives daily and ter has created solid tools that perform considers them the perfect their intended functions better than knives for the job. anything else on the market. There’s no need to rely on flashy looks or gimmicks when the knife you offer is simply the best. “Dexter might not be glitzy like some products out there on the market today,” said Dexter National Sales Manager Carl Abissi. “Dexter knives are designed to perform. They have stood the test of time. They are the choice of charter captains and commercial fishermen. If you want a knife that performs like a charter captain’s, you choose a Dexter.” DEXSTEEL, the proprietary steel used in Dexter knife blades is high-carbon, high-alloy, stain-resistant steel. Dexter helped create the formula for a blade that stays sharp with extensive use and sharpens easily. Each blade is individually ground to the perfect angle with the perfect amount of flex to glide through meat and over bones. “They’re made in the U.S.A., and they’re always sharp,” said Steve Nagy, of Bonita Springs Fishing (bonitaspringsfishing.com), who runs inshore, offshore and Keys tarpon trips. “I grew up with Dexter. I worked in a grocery store as a kid. Dexter knives were the only knives we used in the meat market, and it’s still the only knife I use today. They feel good in your hand, and they’re always sharp.” The handle is as important as the blade when it comes to performance. Years ago, Dexter found perfection in ergonomics with its SOFGRIP white handle. It is soft to the grip and provides exceptional nonslip comfort and precise control, even with wet hands. More recently, they developed an orange Ur-Cut handle that custom molds to your hand for an exact fit, and that’s about as gimmicky as Dexter is likely to get. In October, Dexter will release the new SOFGRIP with EDGE GUARD, a new and improved blade guard that protects the edge and provides airflow to protect the blade. The product will feature the iconic SOFGRIP white handle and a DEXSTEEL blade. For more information, go to dexteroutdoors.com. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

RIGGING & JIGGING
FRESHWATER
RIGGING & JIGGING
Bringing The Dead (Bait) Back To life
I
Tim Barefoot
n case you don’t already know and do this, here’s a trick that can save a day in the absence of live bait. If you’re going bottom fishing and pinfish, sardines, pogies or the others are hard to find with a cast net or sabiki, hedge your bets by keeping a couple dozen fresh or frozen baits about the diameter of a softball, or larger, in the cooler. Even in freshwater, when live gizzard shad or skipjacks are nowhere to be found, a box of frozen baits can still entice catfish, striped bass and others. Dropping a whole dead bait down will get bites, but if you take a minute to “butterfly” them, these once dead baitfish come back to life in the current. No grouper or big snapper can resist them when presented properly. Grunts pinkies and seabass will hammer at it, and eventually get the hook, but grouper or anything else with a large enough mouth will simply inhale it. I’ve seen times when the bite would shut down, even with live bait, and a fresh butterflied beeliner (vermillion snapper) would get bit instantly. The two fillets of any given baitfish attached to the head, without the backbone and dorsal fins are just a little too much to resist for the big meat-eaters. Granted, it’s also big shark candy, but as Popeye would say, “You pays your money, you takes your chances.” Butterflying a bait is very simple. Anyone can go out and catch a pile of grunts, pinkies and seabass with small cut bait, but it’s no coincidence that the people who specifically go fishing for grouper are the ones that come home with the “brown fish” in the box. Don’t hesitate to butterfly a snapper or anything else you thought was once too large for bait. On the bottom, the smaller fish will hammer away at the two larger fillets, and out of nowhere a big gag
or red grouper will finish it off. A 1 ½-pound beeliner, pinkie or Spanish mackerel is the perfect candidate for this job. When you feel the little ones banging on it, sit tight and don’t set the hook. Wait for the big bite; there will be no question when it gets eaten instead of pecked at. Big butterflied mullet, spots and croakers are extremely effective inshore and nearshore for red or black drum. In freshwater, a butterflied bream, perch, crappie or other panfish is perfect for big catfish. To butterfly a bait, start at the tail and fillet each side up to just behind the head and out the gut area. Then grab the tail and break the backbone out just behind the head. To see a detailed video of this, visit the website and click on “Butterflying a Bait.” Learn how to butterfly a bait with a video at

Meet the Watch That Shook Up Switzerland A watch that revolutionized timekeeping at a price equally as radical.

n the history of timepieces, few moments are more important than the creation of the world’s first Piezo timepiece. First released to the public in 1969, the watch turned the entire industry on its head, ushering in a new era of timekeeping. It’s this legacy that we’re honoring with the Timemaster Watch, available only through Stauer at a price only we can offer. Prior to Piezo watches, gravity-driven Swiss watches were the standard bearer of precision timekeeping. But all that changed when the first commercially available Piezo watch came onto the market. The result of ten years of research and development by some of the world’s top engineers, they discovered that when you squeeze a certain type of crystal, it generates a tiny electric current. And, if you pass electricity through the crystal, it vibrates at a precise frequency–exactly 32,768 times each second. When it came on the market, the Piezo watch was the most dependable timepiece available, accurate to 0.2 seconds per day. Today, it’s still considered a spectacular advance in electrical engineering. “It was like a magnum bullet shot at the most sensitive spot of the mechanical watch industry... Switzerland was terrified.” —Ariel Adams of A Blog to Watch. With the Timemaster we’ve set one of the world’s most important mechanical advances inside a decidedly masculine case. A handsome prodigy in rich leather and gold-finished stainless steel. The simplicity of the watch’s case belies an ornately detailed dial, which reflects the prestige of this timepiece. Call today to secure your own marvel of timekeeping history. Because we work directly with our own craftsman we’re able to offer the Timemaster at a fraction of the price that many Piezo watches cost. But a watch like this doesn’t come along every day. Call today before time runs out and they’re gone. Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. Spend some time with this engineering masterpiece for one month. If you’re not convinced you got excellence for less, simply send it back within 30 days for a refund of the item price. But we’re betting this timekeeping pioneer is a keeper.
