ater temperatures are falling. King mackerel are on the move. Wherever they roam, fall is the time to catch kingfish during their annual migration south. In the Atlantic, from the Carolinas south along the Florida coast, kings are following bait to warmer waters. The same thing is going on in the Gulf of Mexico. Kingfish that summered in the northern Gulf are splitting up. Some head west down the Texas coast. Others move east along the Panhandle and down the west coast of Florida. Wherever you fish, the next few months offer the opportunity to connect with the movements of these mercury missiles as they mingle with resident populations. The prospect for drag-burning runs is out there for anglers who pay close attention to water temperatures and stay on the move until they find the fish. King mackerel are as temperature driven as any fish in the sea. When they’re marauding baitfish, they can be found close to shore on the beaches, passes and jetties, where even shore-bound anglers have a shot at them. But most of the larger kingfish hunt over nearshore reefs in 30- to 60-feet or deeper. Deep or shallow, they’ll seek out 68- to 73-degree temperatures where they are comfortable. Watch the water temperature charts, and fish by them. Find the right temperature and an abundance of baitfish, and putting out a spread of baits will tell you quickly if there are kingfish around. Live bait is always the best bet, especially for big smokers. The best bait will depend on where you fish and what baitfish are most prevalent. Pogies (menhaden), hardtails (blue runners), pilchards and threadfin herring are all good baits if they are present. The fall mullet runs offer an abundance of good bait. A lot of tournament and charter boats put a Spanish mackerel in a spread looking for a big bite. Most importantly, baitfish should be fresh. Catch the bait that is available with Sabikis or cast nets, keep it well-oxygenated and switch them frequently. Most kingfish rigs will use a mainline of 20- to 30-pound monofilament. Obviously, with those teeth, a wire leader is essential. You should go as heavy as the fish will let you get away with—depending on water clarity—but it must remain light enough for the bait to swim. A 24-inch, single-strand wire leader of 40-pound test is a starting point. Go lighter in clear water or with smaller baits; go heavier in dirty water or if you’re fishing big baits for big fish. Leaders can be made longer for security. Hooks should be matched to the size of the bait, and it’s wise to add a stinger hook on large baits. Whether anchored, drifting or slow-trolling, a fresh chum slick is a good idea. If a king doesn’t hit within 15 or 20 minutes, pick up and go find some that are biting. They shouldn’t be hard to find this time of year.

By Greg Hatten etails are important when fly fishing for steelhead and running a wood boat through the rocky rivers of the Pacific Northwest. It’s the details I obsess about – the knots, the leaders, the water temperature, the boulders that might hold fish or punch a hole in a wood boat. I am “Obsessed by Details” or OBD. Every piece of gear I carry must pass the OBD test. When I put sunglasses under my microscope, Popticals are my choice. It’s the only brand that provides superior visual performance and a portable design that can be easily packed anywhere to protect the lenses. Eyewear must cut through the glare and provide clarity to see tiny details like the color of insects hatching, the subtle rise of trout, or the faint underwater shadow of a holding steelhead. Popticals offer a level of detail head and shoulders above other glasses. When I row, eyewear must give me clarity to see “the safe line” through rocky sections of river as well as in the distance when I am judging obstacles downriver. Popticals are the sunglasses I trust with my boat on the line. My sunglasses must also provide superior protection from sharp hooks flying through the air. The Popticals I wear have a great side guard that provides outstanding protection. Popticals are the perfect combination of performance and protection with the bonus feature of folding down so small they fit in the palm of my hand. Greg Hatten is a professional fly fishing guide and wood boat builder. Check out Popticals at popticals.com.

t doesn’t get much better than watching the sun peak above the horizon with a rod in hand while schools of redfish crash baitfish all around you. Many areas redfish frequent are in skinny water, and targeting them from a kayak allows access as well as an up close and personal adventure. Kayaks have come a long way since their inception. Thousands of years ago, natives of North America’s arctic built the first kayaks of whale bones and animal skins. They used them for hunting. Today’s plastics and a wave of interest in kayak fishing over
the last decade sparked advancements in kayaks manufactured specifically for fishing. Improvements in space, stability, comfort and maneuverability are just a few of the reasons these vessels are so attractive to anglers. Add to that some of the many options available, such as peddle assist, power poles for anchoring, bait wells and super comfortable seating with lumbar support, and you have a five-star fishing platform that provides access to very skinny water. When fishing from a kayak, lightweight gear is a fun and effective way to target redfish. Light gear offers a challenge when hooked up to 5-plus-pound fish, and it also gives an advantage when casting to distant fish, especially if using braided line. Redfish in skinny water can be caught using jig heads, shrimp under a popping cork, D.O.A. Shrimp and even topwater and suspending baits. This time of year, the mullet really start getting fired up as they start migrating. As redfish actively pursue their prey, casting a topwater plug early in the morning is a really exciting way to draw a strike. Leader material is important in this type of fishing since oyster beds will fray line. Check and replace the leader as needed so the big one never gets away. Kayak fishing has really offered up a unique and exciting way to explore many different types of water. There are many makes and models to suit your fishing style, and taking a kayak out on the water is the best way to see for yourself. Visit a local dealer and get ready to expand your horizons beyond traditional fishing crafts. It’s a different view with exciting promises! verything we do in life carries risks, even going for a drive. Wear your seatbelt, learn to be a defensive driver, and life goes on. Spearfishing has risks too, but they are manageable. A lot of people ask, “What about sharks?” I tell them, “Sharks are like dogs. The vast majority are not a threat. In fact, it’s a privilege to see them in the water. You should enjoy the sight!” Unlike the Jaws movie era, most people now understand that sharks are not mindless monsters. They are beautiful creatures, and there’s many sightseeing opportunities for tourists and photographers. On the other hand, when you are spearfishing, you don’t want to be too cavalier and shoot fish in front of sharks. They are wild animals and should be respected. One should not spear in areas where shark feeding takes place or areas known to be “sharky.” Fortunately, sharks don’t appear out of nowhere and start munching on your leg; that is not their nature. However, it is their nature to be attracted to wounded fish. The vibration attracts them even more than the blood. This is one of several reasons to strive for the killshot on your prey. If you do not achieve that, it is wise to dispatch and place your fish on the boat as quickly as possible. It’s also best to keep moving along. Don’t stay in one spot, especially in the Bahamas. Assuming you’ve done everything possible to avoid an encounter, the next most important step is to dive with a buddy, stay aware, cover each other, and don’t stray too far from the boat. Bad situations tend to escalate gradually. If one diver maintains a watch while the other is dealing with their fish, you are less likely to have a surprise encounter. A good buddy will alert you, call the boat over, and make sure the fish is landed without incident. Sharks tend to make several passes before zeroing in on the target, so there should be plenty of time to land the fish before things escalate. When a shark does show Manny Puig in the water with a big up, it’s important to not show mako shark. Photo by Robin Berg. fear or run away from them. Like dogs, they sense fear and will be more interested if you freak out. Stand your ground, face them, assume an aggressive posture and calmly exit the water. Here’s a summary: 1. When spearing, avoid shark encounters as much as possible. 2. Try to get killshots or dispatch the fish quickly and put it on the boat. Don’t carry a stringer. 3. Move from spot to spot, even if you haven’t seen a shark. 4. Dive as a buddy team and look out for each other after shooting fish. 5. Keep the boat nearby so you can quickly unload fish and/ or exit the water. 6. Do not give up the fish to a shark. That tends to escalate the situation. 7. Do not panic or run from a shark, face them with confidence, but exit when possible. Happy hunting and see you in the water!

Infinity by Harman is about to launch their much-anticipated Kappa Series speaker lineup. The series is a family cosmetic, with a 6 ½”, 8”, and 10” speaker available in either a titanium or white grill. What separates the speaker from other premium speakers is a unique combination of performance, lighting and an unusual “twist” to the 8” speaker. The Kappa 8130 is the new 8” premium white three-way marine speaker from Harman. This speaker boasts 500 watts of peak power (200W RMS) and incorporates two locales for RGB lighting: perimeter ribbon and center mount. Up to seven colors can be attained depending on wiring. The acoustic flexibility of this speaker is perhaps its most inspirational feature. The removable 3 ½” mid tweeter plays perfectly with the science of sound. To recap this science, high frequencies are unidirectional while low frequencies are omnidirectional. Most boat speakers are installed at knee level or lower, so the mid and high frequencies are lost, aimlessly fired at ankles. Harman recognized this deficiency and engineered a removable 3 ½” mid tweeter. Should you choose to remove the mid tweeter, what remains is an 8” subwoofer. Upon removal, the mid tweeter may be installed at an elevated position on the boat, with the helm being a logical choice. The included adaptor and beauty ring assist with the final touches of the mid tweeter installation. The mids and highs fire closer to ear level, resulting in an acoustic experience unlike any other.

hen the Tampa Bay area acquired a major-league baseball team for St. Petersburg in 1995 and before the team began playing in the American League in 1998, owners opened up the naming process to the public. Some of the responses were “Aces,” “Bandits,” “Cannons,” “Stripes,” and “The Nine,” but officials chose The Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Some people objected to the “Devil” part of the name and others surmised that, because the Devil Ray fish likes the bottom of the sea, the team lived down to its name when it languished at the bottom of the rankings. Around 2007, the team owner changed the name from “Devil Rays” to simply “Rays,” emphasizing, not the fish, but the sunshine rays that the area is known for. In fact, for 76 years, the local newspaper, “The Evening Independent,” was given away free on any day that the sun did not shine in St. Petersburg. It happened only 296 times in those 76 years. In 2018, the team announced that, to honor its twentieth year in the big leagues, they would occasionally wear their old uniforms that sported the devil ray image swooping across the front of the uniform and use the name “Tampa Bay Devil Rays.” The fishy devil rays get their name from the appearance of their curled fins, which sometimes point down and look like devil horns sticking out from the fish’s head. The fish have been here a long time: 20 - 25 million years. They’ve also developed the ability to dive to depths of over a mile and stay there for over an hour, as well as to swim faster than 10 miles an hour, making them some of the fastest, deepest divers in the ocean. Despite their menacing name, the fish are actually pretty harmless and shy. They feed on plankton and small fish. The female giant devil ray will actually be pregnant for over two years, at the end of which time she will hatch her eggs inside her body and then give birth to
only one young pup. If you’ve ever seen a devil ray leap high into the air, do twists and even belly flops, you will not soon forget it. They probably do this to communicate with each other, flee from predators, or remove annoying parasites. Devil rays, the fish, not the ballplayers, are on the endangered list and are under threat from boat traffic, pollution, habitat decline and fishing. They are often caught as bycatch or from entanglement in nets, but fishermen seldom target the species. So, if you catch a baseball game with the Rays or see the fish jumping in the ocean, think of the gorgeous fish pictured here. wo fishing buddies from Pocatello, Idaho recently broke the catch-and-release state record for kokanee salmon twice in three weeks. For those unfamiliar with kokanee, it is the freshwater form of the well-known sockeye salmon of the northern Pacific. Sockeye, the salmon you find at the grocery store, are anadromous. They run out of the ocean and into rivers to spawn each fall. Kokanee also make a fall spawning run up creeks and rivers, but their lives are spent entirely in freshwater. It is thought the two species diverged thousands of years ago when
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 1
ice melt created a system of large freshwater lakes and rivers across northern North America. While the sockeye continued their anadromous lives, kokanee did not to return to the sea. In some regions the two species still interbreed, while in others kokanee have become entirely landlocked. Kokanee exist in lakes and rivers across the northern United States and Canada. They have even been transplanted into systems as far south as North Carolina. According to the Idaho State Journal, Cody Spencer and Rob Mackesey got onto a good bite as kokanee ran out of Palisades Reservoir and up Elk Creek to spawn in August. Palisades is a 16,000-acre impoundment of the Snake River that sits hard on the Wyoming border near Yellowstone National Park. Elk Creek feeds the northern end of the reservoir just upstream of the dam. Spencer and Mackesey told the Idaho State Journal they are relatively new to kokanee, but they were actually fishing for the record after they learned the existing catch-and-release record measured just 18.5 inches. For reference, the IGFA world record kokanee measured 27.75 inches and weighed 9 pounds, 10 ounces. Ronald Campbell caught the world record from Wallowa Lake, Ore. in 2010. On Aug. 19, both Spencer and Mackesey caught fish longer than the 2-year-old catch-and-release state record. Mackesey landed a 20.08-incher, and on the same day Spencer caught the 20.9-inch record setter. But the story doesn’t end there. On Sept. 8, Spencer went back and bested his buddy with a 21.5-inch male that was dressed in its full spawning regalia. Part of the allure of kokanee is their unusual appearance. For most of the year, they are silver-sided and resemble a rainbow trout. During the spawn, the bodies of the males turn bright red and they develop a hump on their backs. The catch-and-release state record is a relatively new program for Idaho that encourages the release of fish by allowing anglers to apply for the record by photographing their catch next to a measuring device. The official certified Idaho state record for kokanee is a 6.59-pounder that measured 24.5 inches. Jerry Verge caught it from northwest Idaho’s Priest Lake in 1975.

OAA Fisheries recently denied an Exempted Fishing Permit (EFP) that would have allowed pelagic longline (PLL) vessels into the East Florida Coast Pelagic Longline Closed Area. “Angler conservationists can breathe a sigh of relief that the longline EFP application is no longer a threat to the conservation gains in the E. Florida Closed Zone,” said Jeff Angers, president of the Center for Sportfishing Policy. “We will remain vigilant in protecting both this conservation zone we fought so hard for two decades ago as well as this amazing catch-and-release sailfish fishery that has grown off the east coast of Florida.”
On March 6, 2018, leading recreational fishing and boating organizations submitted public comment to the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council in opposition to the EFP. More than two decades ago, swordfish in the Western Atlantic were in serious trouble due to overfishing. The public responded forcefully to the plight of swordfish, and as a result, nursery areas were identified and closed to the United States PLL fleet in 2001. Today, anglers point to the recovery with pride as a significant conservation victory. “We greatly appreciate NOAA’s decision to keep the conservation zone off-limits to this destructive gear,” said Patrick Murray, president of Coastal Conservation Association. “Clearly the voices of recreational anglers and marine conservationists were heard. This is a great victory.” An unintended benefit of the East Florida Coast PLL Closed Area has been the establishment in the region of the nation’s best sailfish fishery. The direct economic benefit to coastal recreational fishing-related businesses and coastal economies has been remarkable. “Saltwater recreational fishing along the East Coast of Florida supports 35,523 jobs and has a sales impact of over $4 billion annually,” said Glenn Hughes, president of the American Sportfishing Association. “Much of this economic activity is attributed to the tremendous sailfish fishery that has been supported in large part by the East Florida Coast Pelagic Longline Closed Area. The recreational fishing industry is relieved by NOAA’s announcement to not put this conservation success at risk by allowing longlining back into the area.” Ever since the fishery was deemed recovered, there have been attempts to reopen the closed areas to commercial harvest and expose it to the types of intense commercial fishing pressure that drove it into an overfished condition. The permit denied by NOAA Fisheries would have authorized PLL vessels to make thousands of sets in the conservation zone for up to three years and sell all the legal fish caught.

With the rains slacking off and the humidity dropping, the waters in the bay should begin to clear. This time of year the fishing is excellent! Most target species in the bay are more aggressively feeding in advance of the upcoming cold weather to build up fat reserves for the winter. Speckled trout are still on the grass flats and in the bayous feeding on greenbacks, menhaden, finger mullet, and shrimp. Free-line live bait in the shallow water less than 3’ deep. If you don’t have a way to catch live bait or keep shrimp alive, try casting top-water lures, suspending lures, or soft plastics on jig heads. Redfish will be found in the same areas using the same baits and presentation but also look for them around the docks in the bay and schooling up on the flats. The really big redfish are being caught under the bridges and in the pass; most are too big to keep, but lots of fun. Most live baits will do just fine but redfish love blue crabs. Flounder are on the move and are being caught and gigged on the sandy patches near the grass and drop offs, as well as in the pot holes and channels. Bluefish have started showing up, and are so aggressive that they will knock a tin can out of the water when feeding. Mangrove snapper catches will only get better as it gets cooler. Target the structures in the bay and try to use small shrimp or baitfish on a light weight bottom rig on light tackle and you should have plenty for dinner. Down the beach some redfish, flounder and some whiting are being caught in the surf and from the piers. Don’t forget about the king mackerel, they too are being caught trolling down the beach.

The usual suspects are there and waiting. Amberjack are being caught both down on the bottom near the structure as well as up in the water column. Gag and red grouper will eat most large live baits and they love a hand sized pinfish. Plenty of red snapper are being caught but can’t be kept and there are some nice size scamp being caught if you can get your bait down through the trigger fish to the bottom. Don’t forget that if you are set up for bottom fishing always flat-line a live bait so you don’t miss out on the king mackerel that will be cruising. This time of year the fishing gets really good, the crowds are gone, and the weather starts to cool off. It’s a perfect time to grab the family and spend some quality time on the water. See you there!

Panama City / East Bay Hello anglers, October is here! Most of us are ready for some cooler weather. Things will cool down and lots of fish will be on the move! The tropical activity will certainly shake things up. The water clarity, temperatures, and salinity will have a significant impact this month. Bay: The trout and redfish will be moving and the water temp and salinity levels will fluctuate throughout the month. The shallow flats should be excellent this month. There is tons of bait in the bay right now which means two things: I have a lot of bait to throw my net on, and the fish already have a lot to eat. Timing and location is important. Be sure to catch that tide moving. My favorite time to fish back country is incoming tide, but moving tide is key. Live bait choices include pilchards, menhaden, finger mullet, and live shrimp. Artificial lures will produce as well. Toss top-water plugs early and late in the day. Amy Hayes getting some trigger fish I like soft plastics or gold spoons under action with Capt. Troll duster rigs with cigar minnows and diving plugs. Vary your speeds and depths for optimum success. Bottom fishing will be great. Keep a few large live baits in the live well. Grouper will be chewing this month. I like to keep a variety of rigs and baits for bottom to broaden my species potential. I drop small and big rigs on every bottom fishing location. Surf: The pompano and whiting should be getting better and big redfish will be cruising down the beach. Keep a shrimp on the bottom. Larger Spanish mackerel, lady fish, and blue fish will be caught from the surf on spoons, gotcha plugs and jigs. Thanks for reading and fish on! Capt. SOME FACTS ABOUT Skin Cancer:
with capt. randy cnota
• Over 5.4 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are treated in more than 3.3 million people in the U.S.
Do You Buff?
• Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon combined. • Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined. • One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime.
Sun Protection & Cancer Prevention
A
• One person dies of melanoma every hour.
s we move out of the summer months into some awesome Fall fishing action, the sun will continue to damage your skin and literally threaten your life. I’m not trying to scare anyone from spending time on the water, but the truth is that the sun’s rays can be deadly! This is why protecting yourself and getting checked by a dermatologist is so important. Sunblock is a given requirement, but proper clothing is often overlooked or neglected because many feel it would make them too hot, but covered skin stays cooler than burnt skin. If you haven’t tried some of the technical gear available for sun protection, you really should. Many lines of clothing are available that cover, cool and ventilate so finding long sleeve shirts, pants, gloves and a buff (face mask) shouldn’t be difficult. Cover that nose with a buff, it’s poking out from your face getting sunburnt all the time! Some of the qualities you want to look for are fabrics that are moisture wicking, have a UPF rating of 50+ and anti-microbial to keep the stink away! I’ve been using shirts

and masks manufactured by Gillz LLC, they have all these listed qualities plus they’re constructed to utilize any available air movement to ventilate, keeping you cooler. See more at www.gillz-gear.com Angler’s hands are prime places for sunburn so cover them too. A good pair of gloves not only serves for sun protection but they make for better handling of fish and gear. The Fish Monkey line of fishing gloves has proven to be a winner in my book – comfortable, tough and stylish. See www.fishmonkeygloves.com If you have any doubt about spots or moles on your skin, have them looked at by a dermatologist. When it comes to the treatment of skin cancers, sooner is always better so don’t delay!

lake SEMINOLE Lake Conditions: 6 “ below full pool, 88 degrees & stained but clearing. Lake Seminole fishing has been as hot as the weather this summer! This month, bass are moving into their fall feeding grounds. The shad are starting to run on all the rivers and we are seeing them everywhere. There are some key baits and patterns I like to use when this happens. A Strike King Pro-Model Buzz Bait in chartreuse and white is a great search bait when fished along the edges of the grass beds on the main lake. Retrieve this bait at a steady pace and keep a lookout for shad in the area. If no shad are present, keep moving until you find some. This technique works really well early before the sun gets too high and on cloudy days. Fall is also a great time for crank baits! As the sun gets up in the sky, one of my go-to baits is a Strike King 1.5 Squarebill in any shad color. This bait deflects off the grass and has a great hunting action. Cast this bait using 14 lb. fluorocarbon line on a 7’ medium action rod with a 5:3:1 gear ratio reel. Flipping can be awesome on Lake Seminole in the fall. As the days are getting shorter, the thick grass is starting to thin under the mats
of hydrilla, which creates holes and tunnels for big bass to gather in. This technique requires heavy tackle. I like to use a 7’6” to 8’ extra heavy action rod and 65 lb. test Cortland’s Master braided line. Tungsten is a must for 1 of 1 this approach so I use Strike King 1- to 1 ½-oz, depending on the thickness of the grass. When flipping and punching thick hydrilla, a quality hook can be the difference between a bite and big bass in the boat. The Strike King Hack Attack Heavy Cover Flipping Hook can handle the task. I like to thread either a Strike King Rage Bug or a Strike King Rodent on the hook to land the big ones! We’ve started to see some crappie coming across the docks at Wingate’s Lunker Lodge the last couple of weeks. They’re being caught on jigs and minnows in 10’ to 12’ of water. Lots of campers in Bass Island Campground stay for the month just to crappie fish, have fish fry’s and take a freezer full home. We have seen numerous teal coming in and the hunters had great success in the early season. Make your early reservations at Wingate’s for your duck hunting! Dogs are always welcome! St. Joe Bay / Indian Pass October October, the time we all wait for around here! Days are getting shorter and water temps are cooling down, but the fishing is heating up. Redfish, trout and flounder all begin their fall schooling patterns around this time and once you find an area where they are congregating it can make for some fun days on the water. There is still plenty of live bait in the bay and most of the predators will be gorging themselves before they move out. Focus on the grass flats where you see large concentrations of bait in 2-4 feet of water. Top-water plugs like the Rapala Skitterwalk work very well during this time to catch and locate schools of redfish. You’ll also want to use a ½ oz. Johnson gold spoon and 4- to 5-inch jerk baits both hard and soft plastic like the Rapala Twitchin Mullet and Slayer Inc Paddlers. I prefer to focus on the falling tide but fishing this time of year can be good all day. Live baits fished under corks with an 18- to 24-inch leader and 2/0 circle hook is also a fun and great way to get bites.
Marcus and Arden from ATL, with a nice red fish double they got with Capt Jordan Todd in St. Joe Bay.

LAKE TALQUIN Pumpkins, ghosts, goblins and ghouls highlight the month of October, but that’s not until the end of the month. Early on, bass fishing will remain the same when referring to the dog days of summer. With 2018 being one where summer weather patterns didn’t evolve until late June, don’t look for it to be a typical October. Fishing does change as days get shorter and the bright sun shine changes angles warming the other side of the lake. Water temperatures will slowly begin to cool and here’s how I attack Lake Talquin in October. Cooler nights bring plenty of bait into the creeks and bays. As always, bass follow closely behind along with crappie, catfish and stripers. Bass, being a part of the sunfish family, actually prefer warmer water. As long as there’s plenty of oxygen and food there’s no reason for them to leave their haunts. Keep this in mind as you start your day from any one of the county or state maintained boat ramps around the lake. Signs to watch for include bait popping, frogs moving on the banks and bass busting near or in the lily pads and other shallow vegetation. I’ll often launch at different ramps to see what’s going on. Not all creeks and tributaries cool or warm at the same time. Find the right one and you pretty much have it to yourself this time of year. Baits are pretty simple. Floating Rapalas, swim baits or paddle tail worms cover water and will key you in where the bass are staged to ambush. Top water can also be a delight during low light conditions and bass feed on dragon flies, feeding shad and frogs. Buzzing baits account for plenty of big bass during a calm October morning. For you late sleepers, no worries - late afternoons can be just like mornings using the same tactics. If you do get out during the early afternoon you may want to check out some deeper creek channel ledges because bass and baitfish will move in and out depending on conditions. One last thing, check out duck weed and other really green vegetation in the pockets and backs of creeks. Many times I’ll patiently wait, watching areas of grass and pads mixed together. All it takes is one or two swirls and I know the bass are close by. We love our outdoors, football and hunting, so if your teams not playing or if it’s too hot to hike in the woods, come on out to Lake Talquin. Be safe, have fun and ALWAYS wear a life jacket while boating!

spearfishing forecast
The water is in the mid to upper 80s all the way through the water column. Triggerfish are open in state waters but not in federal waters. I was out the on the opening weekend and found a lot of them very high in the water column, but most of them were just long enough to harvest at about 4 miles out, so be careful not to shot the short ones. October is traditionally the best month for water clarity. With clearer water, you need to be more stealthy than normal because like you, the fish can see further as well. A couple of tricks I use is stay high and shot them from above. The other is not to look the fish in the eye; for some reason, this scares most fish. Try using a tinted lens in your mask. Sometimes I’ll lay on bottom and throw a hand full of sand up into the water column which helps hide you and creates a feeding frenzy with smaller bait fish and porgies. With all the new activity large fish www.divelocker.net | 850.230.8006 like amberjack and grouper will come in closer to investigate and you might be able to get a shot off. This year there has been a heavy green open days a WeeK! layer in the middle of the water column so hopefully it will clear up this October as it has in the past. This month’s safety tip is the uses of a reference line. In clear deep water you should use a reference line if not you may experience vertigo and lose your sense of direction. This could be an anchor or buoy line. insTrUcTion The line will help you control your descent and ascent rate especially if dive apparel you are not yet very good with buoyancy control. scUba classes Get out there and enjoy some warm and clear water with friends and daily dive Trips Tide Charts | SIKES CUT, ST. Florida Pro Redfish Series
T
he last Florida Pro Redfish Series event for the Emerald Coast division was held last month out of Bay Point Marina. Twenty seven teams blasted off early Sat September 15 to cast for the two winning fish. Mark Henley and Tyler Smith brought in their limit that weighed 13.45 pounds and walked away with the win and the $5,000 grand prize.. Mark credits their win to being in the right places by paying attention to baitfish movements. Casting Rapala Skitterwalks and Aqua Dream spoons with Duckett Inshore series rods proved to be the ticket. Mark notes that the Aqua Dream spoon got most of their bites due to its unique, flatter design and great fluttering action. By staying consistent and placing 4th, 5th and 11th in the three qualifying events, local fishing legends Fred Myers and Justin Leake secured their
“Team of the Year” honors with another solid finish and took home a new Pro Series II Power Pole. Those that qualified through this, or one of the other three divisions throughout Florida, will be descending on Panama City to compete in the Championship to be held 9 & 10 November. This is a high stakes event with the winners dragging home a new Blazer Bay 2200 with a 250HP Mercury, valued at over $60K! Come out and watch the weighin at Bay Point Marina starting at 3:00 PM both days. The competition will be fierce and it promises to be a great event!

I spend a lot of time cooking fish and many recipes get my mouth watering, but this one is one of my favorites. I often practice catch and release when fishing, but when I hook a keeper-sized flounder, it’s coming home for dinner. The trick with this one can be getting the oil just the right temp so that the filets cook quickly but not burn. Peanut oil can withstand the higher temps so exceeding the 350 degrees is okay, just don’t burn the fish. The small filets cook quickly and come out extra crispy. This will also work great with just about any fish…except mullet, use them for shark bait. Oh and my measurements here are sketchy at best…I never measure, I just guess. INGREDIENTS: • 4 to 8 flounder filets • 1 cup mayonnaise • 1 to 2 teaspoons finely diced sweet onions • 1- to 2 teaspoons sweet relish • 1/4 lemon • 2 cups plain bread crumbs • Peanut oil • 2 eggs • 2 cups of shredded cabbage slaw mix • 4 tablespoons of Marie’s Creamy Avocado Poblano dressing • Salt & pepper To make TARTAR SAUCE: Add mayonnaise, sweet relish, diced sweet onions, lemon juice and pepper (to taste) to a small mixing bowl and mix well then refrigerate for 15 minutes. to Prepare slaw: Add cabbage mix and dressing to taste, mix well and refrigerate for 15 minutes. to Cook fish: Cut filets into nugget sized pieces. In a medium sized mixing bowl, whip eggs with salt & pepper into frothy mix and add clean, dry filets. Add salt & pepper (to taste) to bread crumbs to a large mixing bowl and mix to combine well. Add about ½” of peanut oil to frying pan and heat with a slightly higher than medium setting. Take filets 2 to 4 at a time, thoroughly coat with bread crumbs then add to hot grease, cook shortly and flip. Remove and place on a paper-towel-covered plate. Plate your dish with fried flounder filets, slaw and tartar…Enjoy!

October is the time to get the blues. Not getting depressed but catching the hard fighting blue fish that school in our waters this time of year. These hard fighting tackle busters can be caught on a variety of baits, lures and tackle. Dog Island Reef is a sure bet and it can be fished with a small boat depending on conditions. Live bait such as a scaled sardines or cigar minnows will produce big strikes, but drifting strip bait will do the job just as well. Blues have sharp teeth, so a substantial leader might be a good idea. Try a 2/0 long shank hook with a 50 lb. mono leader on 10 lb. spin and these fish will be great fun. They run the beaches, so surf cast a chunk of mullet just beyond the sand bar and hang on! This time of year schools arrive to feed on the newly hatched fry and bay anchovies coming out of the bay and sound. These strong tasting fish they are really good to smoke but give this a try…Put a skinless filet in a broiler pan and coat the top with mayonnaise. Broil the fish until the top starts to brown. You can use this technique on other fish and once you have tried it you’ll be a believer. Gag grouper in Franklin County waters is picking up as the water turns from rain water to sea water again. The flats are in the same boat as far as the salinity is concerned but the fish are moving. The weather is improving and the fish are responding. I’m reminded on a regular basis that there is knowledge and information about fish and fishing from many areas. Our fishing culture cuts across all social and economic classes. Recently, I saw a beautiful Carolina style offshore boat at one of our marinas and just had to take a closer look at her. The owner was on board and we immediately struck up a conversation about catching wahoo out around the S Tower. He gave me some strong insight on how troll for them. Later that day I ran into a guy that is a wade fisherman on the flats between Carrabelle and East Point. As we talked he gave me some pointers on the type of lures to throw at trout that were chasing finger mullet. Both of these guys came from different backgrounds but had information that gave me more insight on how to fish different waters. Be open and chat it up with all kinds of fisherman. These fellows and I are always ready to talk fish’n. Good luck and be safe out there.

ight years ago, Jeff Kolodzinki spent 24 grueling hours on the dock of a Minnesota pond to break the Guinness World Record for Most Fish Caught in a Day. With a 10-foot pole simply rigged with a float, fluorocarbon line and a barbless hook holding live bait, he yanked 2,649 fish from the water in a single day. Dubbed the Marathon Man, Kolodzinki will attempt to break his own world record on Sept. 11-12, 2018 at Giant Goose Ranch in Canton, Ill. Kolodzinski already has his spot in the record books. This time he’s doing it to introduce people and families to fishing and to increase awareness and financial support for the Fishing For Life, a non-profit, tax exempt charitable organization whose Next GEN program finds mentors for children of families in need. A special focus within the program serves families of veterans who have lost loved ones while serving our nation. Not only is Kolodzinski the current world record holder for fish caught in a 24-hour period, but he also represented the United States seven times in international competition at the World Championship of Freshwater Fishing. He currently serves as the Fishing Brand Manager for Johnson Outdoors and is a longtime fishing industry professional with many awards.

History’s Alive
on Palm Beach’s Wrecks

elow the ocean’s surface rest giants, the wooden and steel beauties that once demanded the sea’s attention. Lying there quietly, patiently suspended under the weight of water, what secrets do they hold? What lost memories are kept in their walls at the bottom of the sea? There is a calming silence as a diver approaches these giants. In the middle of a sandy desert, a diver approaches a dark shadow. As the current pushes them closer, the shadow grows and the shape of a bow or stern emerges. Then the sheer size of the sunken vessel towers overhead. It is dark and mysterious, yet full of life... and forgotten memories. Many wrecks off the coast of Palm Beach were sunk in the 1960s and now sport coats of sponges and coral growth, surrounded by underwater life. One in particular, the Mizpah, is a popular wreck to dive. Once a private Greek luxury liner, she was commissioned by the U.S. government for service in WWII, her rails outfitted with guns to patrol the coast for German U-Boats. After decommission, she sat in a storage yard for some time before being re-discovered. Her original family could not bear to see her wither on land, so they cleaned her up and gave her a burial at sea. I had the honor last August to dive with a granddaughter of the family who purchased the Mizpah and made an artificial reef out of her. My dive buddy showed me photos of the vessel in her prime and shared stories of childhood on the boat. It was an incredible experience to watch her eyes light up when she first saw the Mizpah underwater... how it had become a beautiful habitat. Seeing her excitement and, post-dive, her quiet reverence, made me realize there are secrets and lost memories in the walls of these sunken vessels and that these forgotten walls now have new purpose and life. Once at the bottom of the sea, these sunken giants attract life quicker than you might expect. In Palm Beach, from mid-August through October, wrecks are surrounded by Goliath groupers. Their favorite places to aggregate for spawning is around wrecks.

Dive operators have created The Palm Beach County Diving Association (PBCDA) to give divers and dive operators a bigger voice in local ocean-related issues, and to aid in the sinking of other ships as part of an active artificial reef program. On Oct. 6, the PBCDA is hosting its annual Artificial Reef Fundraiser at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach. All proceeds go to the creation of artificial reefs in Palm Beach County. Tickets include an evening of entertainment, delicious food and beer, and a plethora of raffle and silent auction prizes. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.divepbc.com/participate. All are welcome to attend and be a part of the local underwater history.

and-based shark fishing (LBSF) has been enjoyed by anglers along the coastlines of Florida for many decades with limited spotlight, public concern, or ecological evaluation. While events such as deceased large hammerhead and tiger sharks appearing on several beaches in 2017 catalyzed a deeper examination of this type of fishing, greater exposure due to social media and a growing popularity of LBSF has also driven the need for a review by the Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC). This summer the FWC established 10 workshops around the state during the months of July and August for discussion and feedback on ideas for proposed policy and guideline implementation for LBSF. These forums were open to the public. I attended the FWC Workshop in Melbourne, Fla. on Aug. 27. I was not surprised that there was a full room, mostly of concerned citizens, including several local mayors as well as a few activists. Notably, the concern was mostly about public safety regarding this type of fishing from citizens, while activists pushed shark welfare. Anglers comprised a vocal 20 or so percent of the room. As Bob Dylan sang, “the times, they are a-changing.” As anglers, we are faced with issues and dilemmas our previous generations did not have. Global fisheries are under attack, while coastal fisheries are under increasing regulation. In Florida, coastal fisheries have shown tremendous progress with recovery of shark populations, as noted by the FWC in the meeting. The fear at hand by anglers is penalizing the LBSF community. These anglers, who pride themselves on a catch and release mentality, range from recreational fishermen to professional land-based charter guides. For some, this type of fishing provides a means for a way of life, while for others it’s a challenging sport unlike any other. A strong debate is embracing the positive, such as using LBSF as an opportunity for data collection and scientific research. For example, NOAA provides free tagging kits for any angler interested in tagging sharks prior to release as well as reporting tags on caught sharks. During the workshop, the FWC presented a number of topics for discussion and feedback, all of which can be found on their website in a downloadable presentation. The highlights included: 1. Special Permits for LBSF – There was overwhelming support of this by all parties (this would include education requirement with limited to no cost for the permit). 2. Restricting time/locations for LBSF – nighttime hours only and/or restrictions from certain public beaches. 3. Expanded Rules for Prohibited Species – prohibiting shorebased tournaments for certain species, restrictions on handling (keep in water), and use of specific gear to maximize survival of released sharks. While the above are merely preliminary recommendations and an outright ban on land-based shark fishing does not appear to be imminent, further data-driven research would lead to true long-term solutions for protecting sharks, supporting anglers, and informing the general public with policies that work for everyone. We shall await the decisions of the commission in December.

oling mangrove edges and flats in search of tailing and belly crawling reds is as much hunting as it is fishing. When the target is sighted and it’s time to take a shot with an 8-weight fly rod, your aim better be on target. Gillz pro staffer Noah Miller, of Melbourne, Fla., has spent the on-the-water hours it takes to consistently take reds on the fly. He’s one of those anglers who knows there are still plenty of fish in the famous inshore waters around Titusville. The Indian River, Banana River and Mosquito Lagoon might be facing water quality challenges, but the fishing remains good. Right now, during the fall mullet run and lasting into February is prime time on Florida’s east coast.
“There’s lots of forage, and the fish are happy,” Miller said of current conditions. “They’re very opportunistic this time of year and will eat almost any fly, as long as it is presented correctly.” The redfish display a lot of schooling activity in preparation for a late fall spawn. These fish are resident to their respective waters and remain there through the seasons, even during the spawn. They can be encountered in large schools of 100 fish or more, and finding them is the key to catching them. “Put in the time on the pushpole,” Miller coached. “These fish do move, but they might only be 200 yards away from where they were yesterday. If things look right and you think there should be fish around, don’t leave an area until you’re certain they’re not there.” If the fish are not visible, it is tough to catch them on a fly. With conventional gear, an angler can make long searching casts to cover water for fish that are not showing themselves. With a fly rod, you’re better off holding the fly on the deck until you spot a fish. Seeing the fish and which way it is headed allows for presentation of the fly. You want it to plop down in front of the fish and close, but not too close. “About 40 feet is the cast I like to make,” said Miller. “You’ll be able to tell if he’s seen it and is interested right away… as soon as the fly hits the water. Then you want to start stripping it away from the fish to make it look like a fleeing crab, shrimp or whatever fly you’re fishing.” Miller caught the redfish on the cover of this month’s editions of Coastal Angler Magazine in stained water with a Seaducer pattern that had purple and black hackle feathers for a tail, a black EP Fiber head and bead chain eyes. That fly worked for the 26-incher on the cover, but this time of year presentation is much more important than fly selection. Noah Miller is a Gillz (gillz-gear.com) pro-staffer and is co-owner of Florida Fly Co., which provides the things fly rodders need to fish Florida’s waters. Check them out on Instagram @FloridaFlyCo and on Facebook.

ontauk, NY. It’s known locally as “The End,” and it’s marketed as “The Fishing Capital of the World!” It can back up both claims. “This is an awesome place for fly- and light-tackle fall thrills says charter skipper Paul Dixon of To the Point Charters (516-314-1185; www.flyfishingmontauk.com). “During October, the inshore action with speedy false albacore, stripers and monster bluefish absolutely sizzles.” Dixon has been fishing Montauk waters for 25 years, loading customers aboard his Contender Tournament 25 and working anywhere from the shadow of Montauk’s iconic lighthouse at the tip of the South Fork to Orient Point at the eastern terminus of Long Island’s North Fork. In the winter months, he charters out of Key Largo to fish the Everglades and Florida Keys. “It’s in the rips and coves at Montauk that the fall mayhem really

comes together,” said Dixon, who loves targeting albies with fly rod in hand. Through September, you’ll find pods of Fat Alberts scattered across Long Island’s East End, but once the rainbait exits the bays, Montauk explodes with fish.” According to Dixon, at the height of the run so many bay anchovies stack up in the rips surrounding Montauk Point that the water actually appears brown with the immense schools. “At that point,” said the skipper, “the albies feed in two ways. They’ll cruise through the densest baitfish schools in tight packs, turning on their sides with their mouths open and simply strain anchovies as they move along. They are tough to hook under those conditions since they aren’t singling out specific targets. Wait a little while though, and they’ll begin to bust up the baitfish schools. That’s when the fishing absolutely breaks loose and every cast has the potential to connect.” While light-tackle fans can hook-up using small tins like a Deadly Dick or a white 1-oz. Panther Martin Big Fin swimbait, Dixon prefers the long wand when sea conditions allow. “These fish hit hard and run fast, so go with the best fly fishing gear you can afford,” he suggested. “I use Cortland Compact floating/intermediate lines, Rise fly rods and Tibor reels. For patterns, 2- to 3-inch Epoxy Minnows get the job done most of the time.” Dixon pointed out that it’s important to know exactly what you are casting for each time you let your line fly. “The albies will be slicing right through the baitfish schools, and it’s important to lead them by several feet,” he said. “The bass, meanwhile, stick close together and plow through the schools like they are mowing a lawn. For these, bring your fly right across the front of the pack. Either way, stay in the bait with each cast. If your offering lands outside of the baitfish school, it’s going to get slammed by a monster blue.” Launch your own boat at Montauk for $25 at Gone Fishing Marina (www.gonefishingmarina78.com). For overnight stays, Montauk Harborside Resort Hotel and Snug Harbor Motel and Marina (www. montauksnugharbor.com) offer suitable accommodations at reasonable prices. Plan your visit with the Montauk Chamber of Commerce (www. montaukchamber.com).

ne of the best parts of summer ending is the beginning of fall fishing and FROGS! I love to fish topwater frogs over grass, and this time of year is prime time. I live about 45 minutes from Lake Guntersville in Alabama, and there’s no place better, or more famous, for frog fishing than Guntersville. In the parking lot this time of year, there’s no telling how many different states you will see license plates from. I’ve fished all over this country and Guntersville definitely doesn’t have a monopoly on the frog bite. It has more matted grass than other TVA lakes, but fisheries up north have loads of grass too. And the bass up north seem to be more eager to bite. I think it’s because they aren’t targeted as heavily as they are down here. If I had the opportunity to take someone out and try to get them fired up about bass fishing, I think fishing a frog over matted vegetation would be my choice. If that person’s heart rate didn’t spike when a big bass blew up through the mat on their frog, then they would be better off doing something else. And then once they’ve seen a blow-up, the excitement level for the next one is all the higher. I get a huge smile on my face every time I see it happen no matter how many thousands of times it has happened. Just watching a fish blow up on a frog is exciting, but you also need to get him in the boat for that all-important photo op or weigh-in stage. For that you must have the right

gear. If you throw a hollow frog like the one in this photo over matted grass and he bites, you probably won’t get him in using monofilament line and a rod and reel from the department store. My setup for frog fishing is a sure-fire winner. Rod: MHX FP885 with Winn split grips and Winn Grip Sleeves | Daiwa reel | 60 lb. Vicious braid | Spro frog. Give it a try this weekend. If you’re an avid outdoorsman, you need a trailer hitch that can handle any occasion. Trailers, boats, tree stands, campers, ATVs and Kayaks are the toys we take out on every weekend, holiday and family vacation. B&W’s Tow and Stow Adjustable Ball Mount creates a simple way to enjoy all your toys without using multiple hitches. Simply adjust the mount to the desired level, select your ball size, and load up. Whenever you’re not using the hitch, simply reverse the hitch to have it sit under your bumper to avoid a nasty collision with your shin, garage door or another bumper. Every obstacle has been considered, every adventure accounted for. Simply plug and play and forget about all the extra parts and pieces you used to have to search for in your garage. Take advantage of the allin-one adjustable mount to ensure you are prepared for every outing. For the avid angler, this mount will allow you to take your boat down any boat ramp, run your kayak through any wooded trail, and keep your vessel secure no matter the distance. Offshore to inshore, kayak to SUP, B&W Trailer Hitches is the perfect tool for your adventure.
