ach year, the fishing industry and anglers eagerly await ICAST, the world’s largest sportfishing trade show, to see what new rods, reels, lures, apparel and gadgets companies will roll out in the show’s New Product Showcase. For the gear-heads out there, it never disappoints. This year, 1,263 products, accessories and apparel were entered by 280 companies to compete for Best of Category awards in 26 different categories. The products were viewed and voted on at ICAST in Orlando on July 13. This year’s big winner was the Bote Rover, which took home Overall Best of Show. It also took top honors in the Boats and Watercraft category. It is a truly innovative little SUP/Skiff hybrid, powered by a small outboard to get you where you’re going. Once you get there, it gives you all the skinny-water and stealth capabilities of an SUP. Alaska’s Can’t Miss
Freshwater Fishing Adventures

A
laska sportfishing offers wilderness realized rather than imagined and quickens the pulse in all types of anglers, from panfishermen to veteran world anglers. When an angler returns from Alaska and shares an evening on the flats or at the catfish hole with friends, talk quickly turns from big catfish stories to Alaska fishing adventures. The reason is obvious. If you are searching for action, the roostertails of spray generated by a 50-pound chinook salmon on a five-jump run through shallow water will satisfy your need. If the sight of huge shad migrations have you tying on a lure in finger-fumbling fashion, wait until you view pristine rivers teeming with five species of Pacific salmon that are counted not by the thousands, but by the millions. Valdez anglers see the return of as many as 11 million pink salmon to intertidal waters. Choosing the right Alaska adventure is complex, with its various runs, timing and weather. Knowing when to go, where to go and with whom is key. I’ve fished and covered Alaska’s fishing for more than 42 years, and I’ve helped countless anglers find the trip best suited for them. Each angler has separate needs. In the freshwater realm, here are some of the top considerations for can’t miss adventure, fish-hooking action and personal service worthy of the Alaska experience. Interior Alaska
If you’re looking for a quiet place to fish, with scenery, comfortable cabins and located far from the crowds, drive down to Denali National Park and visit Kirk Martakis at Fish Denali. He offers several lakes on private property that offer about 3,000 wild rainbow trout to 31 inches and trophy-sized grayling. They cruise the lake like sharks, and the clear water makes sight casting to them with single-hook jigs, nymphs or topwater lures too much fun. It’s some of the best lake rainbow fishing I’ve experienced. Cozy, fully equipped cabins located at lakeside offer everything you’ll need for a multi-day stay, including Wi-Fi and multiple bedrooms. It’s a good choice for large families, fishing buddies or couples who want a quiet, laid-back trip with some of Alaska’s best scenery (www.Fishdenali.com). Float fishing offers a change of scenery around each turn in the river as well as great fishing opportunities. Alaska River Tours offers remote float trips along the road system, with neither the crowds nor the expense. Depending on the season, owner Reinhard “Reini” Neuhauser chooses the best rivers for grayling, trout, sheefish, pike, salmon and char. On overnight excursions, he provides tents, camping gear and boats. You arrive ready to fish. I recommend the overnight float, which makes the most of Alaska’s 19-plus hours of daylight. Fish when it’s light, and float during the remaining five hours from midnight to the 4 a.m. during the twilight period, when it’s still light enough to read. Bristol Bay Bristol Bay lodges offer the crème de le crème of Alaska sportfishing in these western Alaska waters, where tens of millions of salmon move into various watersheds each year. A couple hundred lodges and camps offer a variety of services, from bare-basic outfitted trips to spectacular lodges with fly-out fishing, shore lunches, and gourmet meals. Mike Gorton runs Goodnews River Lodge, the only lodge located on the 400-milelong river that offers some of the best boat-accessible river fishing for silver salmon, rainbow trout and char you’ll find in the region. It is a mixed-bag fishery, where no matter the weather, you can fish. AT CUTTYHUNK ISLAND, MASS. By Charlie Warfield
B
etween Buzzards Bay and Martha’s Vineyard, 10 miles out to sea off the coast of Massachusetts, you will find Cuttyhunk Island. Early seafarers used the island’s natural harbor as a shelter for a few weeks in 1604, making it the first English settlement in New England. When I first visited Cuttyhunk, I could have been in the Bahamas; it was warm and beautiful. It has New England charm with the relaxed feel of the Islands. In addition to the beautiful scenery and fun atmosphere, Cuttyhunk has made a name for itself as a premier striper fishing destination in the Elizabethan Islands. In the summer, this small village is populated with surf casters and clients chartering one of the eight captains on the island. I fell into the former category and benefited from the sage advice of my friend Armand, who has been making an annual pilgrimage to this island for nearly 40 years. Armand knows all the locals, and he knows that the person for us to fish with on this trip would be Capt. Bruce Borges, because Capt. Borges was the only one on the island with a boat that had a full casting platform suited to pursue bass with a fly rod. Capt. Bruce is quite the fly angler himself, and has guided big names such as Lefty Cray over the years. He is a sharp-witted salty fellow who looks all of 78 his years but possessed the strength and agility of a man in his 50s. As soon as we unloaded our gear from the ferry, we set out to fish the shoreline from the captain’s nicely appointed boat the Wahini. As we worked the rocky shoreline, I was impressed by the rugged beauty of this place.

Cuttyhunk sits in the middle of the striped bass prespawn staging area. Fish glut themselves on an abundance of squid and sand eels as well as school after school of bunker. Once the water warms to the perfect temperature, the fish move inland and up the many tributaries throughout Massachusetts and Maine to spawn. This makes for a great fishery full of fish ranging from small schoolies up to 50-pound-plus monsters. It is all about timing as to whether you will catch the big fish or just the schoolies. On this trip, it was the latter, but there were larger fish around, and bait fishermen were having better luck with the big fish. You know what they say, “they never refuse the naturals.” If you ever find yourself around Cape Cod and looking for some great fishing, check out Cuttyhunk. Even if you just take the ferry over for the day and spend some time on the beach with the family, I promise you will enjoy this beautiful and quaint Island.

Three Cycles of the Fisherman’s Moon
H
ere in life after deck, an admittedly awkward point in my fishing/ writing career when I’m trying to remember how to fish for fun and relaxation, I’ve found a new form of major amusement grilling my fellow rod-and-reelers wherever I find them about the most tedious, impossibly technical, or flat-out unknowable pieces of the fishcatching puzzle. This new, semi-sadistic pastime has unearthed some spectacularly ornate and often hilarious explanations for common fishing situations—the best ones generally coming from the frontiers of marine psychology, where my fellow striper or tuna hunters delve into all the “why’s” of the target species’ emotional lives, sensory experiences, or behavioral tendencies. My own perverse amusement aside, my recent hours alongside the part of the angling public with a healthy mix of normal-people hobbies and interests has served as a refresher course on what an aspiring sport fisherman wants/needs to figure out to move the catch-to-skunking ratio in the right direction. I’ve realized how strange and esoteric my own fishing interests have become over the last 20 years or so, and, nearer the point of this month’s column, remembered a couple of the key things it took years to drive through my concrete skull—the building blocks that support the weight of all I’ve learned since.

The curse of the beginner is that he has no frame of reference to tell a genuine expert from a blowhard with an ear for jargon. Whereas the loudmouth makes it his goal to enshroud what he knows in serious technical complexity—makes it look or sound hard—a legit expert fisherman will not only make it look easy, but can boil even tougher concepts down, make the learning comparatively easy. Of course, some aspects of hook-and-line fishing are a little tricky, and absolute truths are mighty scarce on the fisherman’s ocean. Learning the various roles of tide in fishing success takes time and observation, but we all realize early and often that tide stage, the speed of tidal current— timing relative to the ebb and flow—has an undeniable and unavoidable impact on what we do or don’t catch. Other variables, from the perspective of the novice, have less tangible effects on fishing success. The study of moons or certain weather patterns, for example, will yield useful info—sometimes. It’s all these sometimes rules that give striper fishing, say, or tuna trolling, an air of impenetrable complexity. The trick, in the earliest, steepest legs of the learning curve, is to maintain a critical ear for which details matter,

Double-up for Summer Fun BY TOM SCHLICHTER
F
our hours without a strike is too long, even when the water is that beautiful, warm -blue color you just know has to hold some tuna. We had been trolling along the 30-fathom curve, working an eddy that had spun off from the Gulf Stream and meandered slowly toward the inshore grounds. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived on the scene, most of the warm was gone and so, too, it appeared were the tuna we hoped to encounter. With an hour to go before lines up, we had trolled every quadrant of the pocket and come up empty. It was then one crew member piqued everyone’s interest by recalling a small weed line we had passed an hour earlier. Perhaps there would be a few mahi (dolphin fish) hiding in the shade of the floating mats allowing us to at least catch dinner. In a lastditch effort to salvage our day, we reeled up and came about. Arriving alongside the long, snaking weed line, it took only one cast of a white bucktail before the words “Fish on!” rang out from the port stern. Indeed, there were mahi under the weeds – plenty of them. We drilled over a dozen in the next forty minutes and salvaged our day with explosive action and leaping fish on light spinning gear. What a blast! Nobody likes to get skunked on a fishing trip, but it’s part of the game. There are, however, a few things you can do to tilt the odds in your favor whenever you head out. Clearly, one of these is to prepare for battle with multiple species of fish anytime you take to the water with piscatorial pursuit in mind. On this trip, for example, our cockpit and cabin was stuffed full of tuna gear of every type. We had along with us huge reels of every configuration, chunk bait, chum, dozens of tuna lures in a rainbow of
colors and hundreds of hooks. In short, we had every conceivable tuna option covered. Fortunately, we also had four 14-pound test spinning outfits plus a Plano box full of small hooks and jigs that were just the right size for mahi. That we came home without any tuna was unavoidable given the day’s bite. That we managed to bring back a huge pile of mahi fillets, however, was due to good preparation and a willingness to alter our game plan when push came to shove. With many popular game and food fish species currently overstressed, and others covered by strict creel and size limits, targeting two or more different kinds of fish makes a lot of sense. It provides an option if your primary quarry fails to show, isn’t large enough to keep, has lockjaw - or is so willing that you fill your limit in record time. It’s also smart from an environmental perspective, spreading the pressure between species instead of hammering the same type and body of fish day after day after day. Like most anglers, I usually head out with one primary target in mind, but I also prepare a back-up plan in case all doesn’t go as initially hoped. Such planning has saved the day for me on many occasions, supplemented decent days to make them good ones, and turned some banner days into fantastic voyages. Imagine, for instance, limiting out with fluke to six pounds, then topping off your catch with a pair of 40-pound striped bass; decking your largest yellowfin tuna and then hauling up an old soaker of a codfish later the same day; catching a nine-pound weakfish and fivepound fluke – at the same time. I’ve seen each of these scenes played out over the years and in each

case the catches were by design, the product of good planning, smart rigging and thorough preparation. Stripers and blues, porgies and sea bass, blackfish and cod: these are examples of “natural doubles;” fish that go together at certain times of the year like peanut butter and jelly, ham and cheese or bacon and eggs. With each of these pairs, if you find one species and there’s a good chance you’ll find the other as they favor similar habitat and water temperatures. Often you’ll catch them on the same baits and rigs, and in the same general places, so no real extra thought is required on this front. If you’ve been fishing for any length of time, you’ve undoubtedly witnessed such doubles occur countless times. But with a little extra thought and preparation, you can take the double-up theme to a whole new level. Consider a mix of striped bass and summer flounder, for example. They aren’t natural doubles in the sense that you would expect to catch them together like porgies and sea bass. But they are frequently found in close proximity to each other. In many areas, you actually have to drive over the fluke grounds in route to the striper rips. Gearing up for both can be a great way to ensure a full day of action – or save a trip when one or the other fails to cooperate. Simply being prepared to take advantage of predictable opportunities is another way to play the doubles game. Most fluke fishermen, for instance, leave port with one thought in mind: Catch fluke! Then they watch in dismay as the surface erupts with cocktail blues all around at mid-day as the summer flatties take a siesta. All it takes is a extra spinning outfit or two on board, rigged and ready to go with a popping plug or hammered spoon, and you can quickly take

Being prepared to catch more than one kind of fish on every trip maximizes your time on the water by eliminating down time. It can make your day more interesting, and can even salvage trips when the targeted guest fails to cooperate. Doubling up can also add your dockside fun. Imagine explain to skippers berthed nearby that you actually intended to take a mix of tuna and sea bass, mahi and fluke or codfish and scup. The smirky smiles and rolling eyes alone are enough to warrant keeping a few extra set-ups stowed on my vessel.

A
ugust is the last month of summer for many; (my summer usually ends in late October – lucky me!) There are many fishing opportunities for seasoned anglers to novices in our local waters and you should take advantage of our resources. Offshore, Shark, Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Marlin, feed in our waters; you might even be lucky enough to hook a Swordfish! Whales, Porpoises, and Turtles are often seen during the day; “pretty cool to see these creatures in their natural habitat”. Many offshore wrecks will hold Codfish, Black Sea Bass, Hake, and Pollock if you want to fish the bottom. If you’re not familiar with the offshore scene it pays to charter a boat and captain that frequents these waters.

If you’re not traveling offshore, ocean fishing for Fluke, Black Sea Bass, Striped Bass, Bluefish and Porgies can be very rewarding; it’s usually a short run from the beach to the fishing grounds, making for a nice day trip. Inside the bays many of these fish can also be caught; it’s a great place for young children to fish, plenty of action and close to home when they get bored. Three to four hours is plenty of time for young kids, we want them to enjoy themselves and look forward to coming fishing again. The same can be said for the Western Long Island Sound, calm waters for the most part, easy day on the water. Like to fish the surf or bays on foot? There are also many opportunities for you. We are surrounded by water! Many big Striped Bass over fifty pounds are caught every year by surfcasters always be ready! If you want to go fishing, but don’t have a clue; find a party boat that takes people fishing, they supply the bait and tackle you will need usually at an affordable price and offers half day trips –all you have to do is jump on. Make friends with the mates, they fish every day; they know what’s working and want you to catch fish. These mates work for tips, remember to reward them for their expertise and service, even if it’s a poor day for catching (yeah that happens once in a while). The mates will also clean your fish at the end of the day, ready for the dinner table.

Here Come the Stripers and Blues, and the Tournaments Too August promises to be a great month for anglers. Schools of bunker are still roaming the Sound being chased by both striped bass and bluefish. Locally, there is lots of news of striped bass being caught at the Race, Watch Hill, and Block Island as well as in the Thames River. Bunker chunks, three-waying eels, tube and worm, and bucktails are favorite angler techniques used to catch them. Bigger Blues start to invade Long Island Sound and the Thames River during this month. Snapper blues have also shown up in the Thames pleasing both young and old. Small snappers also make great fluke bait! Remember you are only allowed ten blues per day regardless if they are 2 inches or 20 pounds. There is plenty of good fishing for bottom fishing enthusiasts. Anglers are not having any problem landing keeper sea bass and porgies with a few nice fluke. Porgy fishing continues to be outstanding on every local rock pile. Good reports of nice size fish being caught from shore at the Fort Trumbull Fishing Pier, New London City Pier, Pleasure Beach, Avery Point as well as from Bluff Point. August is also great month for off-shore fishing. Various size tuna are being caught just south of Block Island with larger tuna being caught the further you go to the canyons. Yellowfin, bluefin, longfin albacore, white marlin and even a few swordfish can be caught during this time. Trolling past high flyers produces many mahi this time of year. Makos and threshers along with other varieties continue to please
the hearty shark anglers. Lots of chum seems to be the ticket. Lastly, anglers can register at AW to participate in WICC 600 Greatest Bluefish Tournament on Earth tournament which takes place August 26 and 27. First place grand prize is $25,000 for the heaviest fish. Last year’s winning fish was caught from a shore point. For more information call 203.366.BLUE. Our own Rootin’ Tootin’ Fluke’n Showdown ends August 27. It is a fun 14 week summer contest with weekly prizes and a $500 prize for the angler who lands the heaviest fish during the tournament. Having spent numerous recent hours trying to help a couple of friends begin to untangle the role of moons in big-bass fishing, I thought that might be worth a few paragraphs here. In my own fishing education, moons seldom made it into the lessons. But I heard about such-andsuch new moon, or “fishing up the moon” in such-and-such month, constantly—to the extent I felt like a moron because I couldn’t find any real causal relationships between moon phase and lights-out fishing. That would come much later. And when I did finally see it, I kicked myself for weeks. I mention moons because I’ve heard quite a few guys talk about the moon with the familiar pained facial expressions men wear when they know a detail is important but can’t for the life of them explain why that is so. So, in an effort to balance the karmic scales after playing Spanish Inquisition around the docks, I’d like to use this space to shed light on some ways a novice can harness lunar cycles for the good of his/her catch stats. First thing to know about moons is that the primary, most significant correlation between moons and big striped bass is the moon as the driving force in tidal cycles. That is, it’s not some property of a full or new moon that puts stripers on the feed. Rather, it’s the impact the moon’s position relative to earth, and the earth’s and moon’s position relative to the sun, that create our tides—more specifically the tidal cycles. To be clear, it’s not just the moon’s position relative to the earth’s rotation on its axis—the roughly 24-hour cycle of ebb and flood tides and the slacks (high and low) in between periods of tidal flow (two highs and two lows, two floods and two ebbs in a full day). Although tide stage on a single-day scale can mean the difference between putting a hurt on big fish and simply putting a hurt on your fuel tank and/or lower back, what an experienced striperman means when he references the moon is the second of three overlapping lunar cycles. This

is a roughly 28-day cycle with two periods of dramatically increased tide height around the two “moons” (the full and new, or dark, moons) and weaker tides (below average tide height/velocity) on the quarters of the moon—all created by the moon’s revolution around the earth. When a surfcaster speaks of fishing “up” or “down” the moon—full or new—he means fishing the last four or six days as the moon waxes toward full (up) or the same starting on the moon and fishing some number of days as it wanes (down). Peak tidal velocities on a 28-day cycle will occur on the nights of the full or new moons. To be clear, the biggest tides in a given month can fall on either the new or full moon, but that’s controlled by yet another layer of lunar influence: The earth’s and the moon’s position in Earth’s 12-month orbit around the sun. Within a 12-month cycle, the relative height/ strength during the new or full moons will fluctuate according to the earth’s relative distance from the sun, but also the interplay between the pull of the moon, the pull of the sun, and the angle of Earth a la its angle as it rotates on its axis. At points when the pull of sun and pull of moon align, we get moons with the year’s greatest tidal range—the highest high (i.e. spring) tides, and the lowest lows. (Or, viewed from a fishing perspective, these “astronomical” tides, with the greatest difference between slack high and low, translate to extreme tidal current velocity—sometimes, in certain areas, an addition 2 knots or more of current added to the normal full- or new-moon peaks in the 28-day cycle. To fully absorb the three cycles as they play out, you really need to log some hours poring over Eldridge or another annual tide book that provides current velocity along with times of high or low tide. Astronomy, physics, or hydrodynamics lessons aside, it’s the fish— the way they respond to a given day’s total tidal influences. Although, under certain tide and weather conditions, an unusually bright full moon can, some maintain, play a major hand in your fishing success, the moon’s impact on catch rate has to do with the way fish react to change over the course of the 28-day wax/wane cycle—and not some aesthetic feature of the moon in the night sky. Some known constants in fish behavior can help you leverage the moons (tides) in your hunt for plus-size striped bass. As a rule, fish will school up/concentrate and feed, as they do during migration periods, on the moons (ergo, during the biggest tides of a month). Another rule is that migratory schools of striped bass, among other species, will do their open-water, long-distance travel when they can swim fair-tide. Big schools of Chesapeake Bay cows usually pull in at Block Island on the last June or first July moon. To further bear out Mother Nature’s distaste for inefficiency, long-distance migrations will also usually coincide with stronger-than-the-monthly average (i.e. astronomical) tides—bass taking advantage of every available sort of energy savings. To narrow variables of timing further, the biggest bass will tend to be most cooperative on or around the moons. In known striper strongholds like the Watch Hill Reefs of Block Island’s SW Corner, timing your drifts or trolling passes to coincide with slow-but-still-moving current coming into or out of slack on the month’s strongest tides.

Consider yourself a fisherman? A charter boat trip might be the ticket for you. It’s usually only a maximum of six anglers on the boat with a captain and mate. These boats will also supply the bait, tackle and most importantly their expertise. A lot can be learned on these trips and it will be very relaxing just to fish and listen. These trips will be a little more expensive, but well worth the price. A reservation will be needed to fish on a charter boat, so don’t wait for the last minute, especially this month. On any fishing trip you take, make sure you’re prepared for the elements. Bring SUNSCREEN!!! Sunburn will ruin your experience and have long term negative effects on your skin. Hats, sun glasses are also very important when in the sun; it’s always stronger on the water. Bring plenty of fluids to drink during the day, and enough food for everyone. Also bring some sort of cooler with ice to protect your catch and future dinner. A sweat shirt or jacket is nice in case you need it. Bring your children fishing with you; it will be a great day for the entire family. It can be an experience that your family looks forward to every year if you plan it right. Remember to be courteous and respectful to your fellow fisherman; everyone wants to have a good time; watch the guys that seem to catch all the fish, there’s a reason they do. Striper Success in a Salt Pond BY TODD CORAYER For kayak fishermen, summer striped bass fishing does not always mean a move to deep waters. Salt ponds, with their eelgrass beds, curves, creeks, long stretches of warm mud and communities of crustaceans, minnows and sand eels are perfect destinations to find bold bass hunting in shallow waters and around structure. They also provide a sense of adventure to the paddling fisherman with their endless beauty, low fishing pressure and sweet demands of time and tide. Stripers are ultimately opportunistic, preferring to lurk behind energy-conserving rocks or other natural structures so often you’ll need to target areas with deeper, tidal influenced trenches where flows are stronger than small silversides or peanut bunker can fight. Swimming a soft plastic or twitching a Crystal 3D Minnow Magnum parallel to an incoming tide can be deadly. Be patient, relax the line, let the tide do the work. It’s the pulse of the water, with an occasional twitch that wins the fish. Positioning your kayak alongside an inlet might put you in a favorable, circular eddy that affords more casting and catching with less paddling. Your day should start before dawn or as twilight overtakes as those expanses of bottom will warm quickly under a summer sun, pushing fish down. That plan requires some daytime recon to build an understanding of how water moves and where rocks or shell piles will change that flow, even slightly. Start with a seven foot medium action rod, some twenty pound braid and a rattling crankbait. That low frequency beat will help draw attention in any water. Fishing salt pond tidal flows also means thinking differently; often it means targeting areas where no bass would be caught dead in
daylight. They may dart in and out of skinny water as they push bait or roll over to consume crabs and shrimp in less than a foot of water, while their slapping tails are your siren, all the while using darkness to their advantage. They can can be finicky when bait is plentiful; a ⅛ or ¼ oz. D.O.A. jig head paired with a soft jerk bait matched to the color of the bait you see will be key. Cocahoe minnows in white or pearl are reliable staples until the high heat of summer but bass are fickle so be ready with several different patterns already rigged in sizes matching the bait. Birds know first and best; even one overhead might mean more than you think. Gulls and terns, with keen eyesight and aerial advantage, will alert you to bait and what’s eating them. Don’t give up when the sun is rising; opportunity is in a stripers DNA so the loud splash of a top-water popper might raise an angry strike even on the brightest bluebird morning. As an orange sun rises or sets to welcome a sweeping blanket of stars, there’s few things more amazing than catching a magnificent striped bass from a kayak in a silent salt pond.

In less than a year, he has Photo by Doug Kerr broken the Minnesota state record for the species twice. Minnesota keeps separate sets of records, one for weighed and certified state records and one for fish that are caught and released after length measurements are taken. Both of Robinson’s monster cats fall into that second record category. On May 15, Robinson caught and released his latest record from the Minnesota River southwest of Minneapolis near Savage. With 100-pound test line, he hauled in the fish, which had a length of 49 inches and a girth of 33 ½ inches. Now, we ran the numbers through several of those online calculators that are supposed to estimate fish weight and came up with a wild variation, from 35 pounds up to 75 pounds. So, it’s up to you to guess at this one’s actual weight. The weighed and certified Minnesota state record was caught back in 1970. It weighed 70 pounds and was caught from the St. Croix River. There is no record of that fish’s length and girth. The IGFA world record flathead was caught from Elk City Reservoir in Kansas in 1998 by Ken Paulie. It weighed 123 pounds. Maybe next time Robinson catches a big catfish he should weigh it. The one in the photo sure does look mighty big.

B
y the time I was 12 years old, I knew and fished at least two dozen bass waters, most of them from a canoe with my Pop. Usually there were no boat ramps, no houses and seldom another fisherman. That’s the beauty of the Adirondack region of Upstate New York. There’s tons of water and lots of fish. Often when the Adirondacks (ADKs) are mentioned in fishing circles, pristine secluded trout rivers or brook trout ponds come to mind. Our secret is that the ADKs have countless bass fishing options, as well, with any kind of water you could think of. Three renowned waters within my 30-minute fishing radius are perfect examples of the great bass fishing in our area. Lake George, Lake Champlain and Saratoga Lake provide varied and endless opportunities for both largemouth and smallmouth action, with a spectrum of habitats that could keep any bass enthusiast occupied for a lifetime. Additionally, if it’s a secluded canoe/kayak adventure you’re after, I dare say the ADKs have more backwoods bass waters on public land than any state I can think of. These woods are the same natural forests they were in 1885, when they were deemed untouchable thanks to Teddy Roosevelt. Imagine fishing secluded, crystal-clear waters with green mountains as a backdrop, moderate temperatures and a relaxing breeze. Since the founding of our country, these waters have provided sanctuary from the heat and congestion of the growing East Coast industrial cities. Summer retreats to the ADKs to fish and hunt were the norm, and coupling
these outdoor activities with attractions like Saratoga horse racing or a Lake George steamboat ride created traditions of the American summer vacation. Today, if you are serious about bass fishing, yet want to include family on the vacation, the Saratoga/Lake George area is the spot. I feel qualified to endorse the attractions, since when I am not fishing or hunting, I’m performing music at many of the area’s top resorts and restaurants. Though my profession as a traveling musician has allowed me to fish all over North America, my heart is still at home fishing the 6-million-acre Adirondack Park. Let’s start with Lake George, which is a large deep-water lake that is the ultimate finesse bass water. This beautiful 32-mile-long glacially carved lake has rock shorelines and is speckled with islands that provide endless bass structure. Lake George has AAA reservoir water quality and is crystal clear. Light 6- to 8-pound fluorocarbon line is a must while drop-shotting 30- to 50-foot rocky bottoms for big numbers of smallmouth and some nice 4-pound-plus fish. When drop-shotting I prefer natural presentation baits like the Berkley’s Gulp! Nemesis in the Smelt color. The lake temperature remains cool all year, and shaky-head worm presentations or small bass jigs will score a mix of largemouth and smallmouth in ultra-clear 20- to 40-foot depths. This is a great training ground for teaching your family or friends to fish. Shore fishing is a bonus, and many others and I make trophy catches all year from shore. I rely on my Costa sunglasses on this lake as much as my Lowrance Sonar. It’s so clear that I can watch strikes in 20 feet of water. I keep three pairs of Costas on board. I prefer yellow lenses for sunrise, low light and cloudy days. These lenses work wonders sighting fish and contrasting bottom structure. I use blue mirror on bright days and amber green mirror lenses for most other situations on the lake. Just to the north of Lake George, Lake Champlain offers everything a fisherman can imagine. Many experts rank Champlain among the top fisheries in the country for largemouth and smallmouth bass. You can fish just about any presentation in this vast lake, which combines natural and man-made structure like sunken ships, submerged train tracks and dock cribbings. My fishing concentrates on the southern end of the lake, where the water is usually very stained. Vast water chestnut beds yield many 5-pound-plus largemouth bass. Heavy abrasion-resistant line is a must; I prefer fluorocarbon or braid, depending on presentation. I normally punch the weeds with 1- or 2-ounce tungsten and big 10-inch Power Bait or Yum worms. Dark colors work best. Topwater and flipping are also go-to tactics, with countless backwaters providing breathtaking views and heart-pounding hook sets. To the south, Saratoga Lake is much smaller than George or Champlain. It is slightly stained and can be highly pressured but still provides large numbers of largemouth in the 3- to 5-pound range. Dense concentrations of cabbage and mixed milfoil create great opportunities for tossing plastics and jigs on the edges of long weed lines. Saratoga Lake’s close proximity to the City of Saratoga Springs makes it an ideal morning or evening getaway for those visiting during track season, which lasts through Labor Day. While the tourist season winds down, the fish really turn on, which make for some magical days in fall. The big lakes are great, but to me the gems of this area are the smaller lakes and ponds I learned to fish on. The unique chance to toss a lure to unpressured fish on public waters is a reality. The Adirondack Park features countless opportunities perfect for canoe and kayak fishing. With today’s lightweight watercraft, you can be alone with 2- to 5-pound bass after just a half-mile hike to numerous ponds and lakes. Many canoe and kayak waters are also roadside or within a state park. New York does a wonderful job providing trailhead access and parking areas for anglers with car-top boats. Research access at www.dec.ny.gov. The amount of good bass water in the Saratoga/Lake George is staggering. With its proximity to so many metropolitan centers, a short drive up I-87 can have you setting hooks on some beastly bass in no time.

innesota’s Mille Lacs Lake has long been known for exceptional walleye fishing and ice fishing, but the smallmouth bass fishing on this more than 130,000-acre lake north of Minneapolis is what catapulted it to the top of Bassmaster Magazine’s 100 Best Bass Lakes rankings. According to B.A.S.S. research, 20-pound five-fish limits of smallmouth bass are a regular occurrence, 30-pound sacks show up in some events, and two 36-pound limits were weighed in during events last fall. Those numbers are almost unbelievable on a smallmouth lake, considering a 36-pound limit would average out to more than 7 pounds per bass. A
big question on all the Internet message boards lately is, “Where are the midrange trout in the heat of summer?” One of the indicators of either fishing too shallow or fishing in the wrong part of the bay for the season is catching mostly undersized trout. So, if you’re catching nothing but “dink” trout in August, fish deep structure with current. I don’t like catching dinks, so I’ll focus on upper-slot redfish and sight casting to the big shallow trout I see while I’m fishing for reds. The summer heat finally forces redfish to go in search of food in the marsh and grass flats. Shrimp are now mostly gone, except large white shrimp, so while there are main-bay, open-water redfish chasing those fish-big shrimp, some reds will now begin to work over juvenile white shrimp and shad in the marsh and grass flats. They’ll also be eating mullet and crabs when the opportunity presents itself. Redfish are simple. They use current to feed, and the faster you learn about where the niche is, the more consistent you’ll be catching redfish in shallow waters. Follow a current from a marsh cut to the bank of a marsh pond it’s flowing too, and you’ll find redfish. Also look for eddies behind structure and where the current edge crosses structure, and that’s good as well. Big trout are similar in the summer in shallow areas. They are there for the big mullet and to eat little trout but are in small niche areas of their own. MAKO SHARK ON THE FLY
I
f you’re looking for some spectacular fly fishing for toothy critters, mako sharks are tough to beat as a game fish. They can be found pretty much worldwide, but right now is the time of year to visit southern California, where shortfin mako sharks show up off the coast every year within easy range for fly rodders with a small skiff. The mako shark is one of saltwater fly fishing’s outstanding but unappreciated game fish. Found on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, a smaller mako in the 20- to 30-pound range can be the perfect-sized fish for the beginning saltwater fly fisherman. Of course, fishing for sharks is a tad different than fishing for bluegills in your Uncle Ned’s farm pond, and the equipment also differs. First, you’ll need a boat, preferably a boat over 18-feet that can handle fairly choppy seas. Most center-consoles will do; however, a skiff with a beam of 8 feet or wider and a not-too-deep V will settle in the water better and will reduce pitch and roll to a minimum, offering a much more stable casting platform. A good chum line is the most effective way of attracting makos to within casting distance of your boat. Chumming attracts the larger makos and will place you in the position of being able to sight-cast to them. Into a chum bag, place the belly sections or fresh carcasses of tuna, bluefish or bonito, then place the bag into a milk crate or 5-gallon bucket and lower this mess over the side. Then sit back and listen for the musical score from the movie “Jaws” to begin. You won’t have long to wait once that chum slick begins to spread. Ideally, you should use fresh carcasses, but store-bought chum will suffice. One bit of important advice: Less is more when chumming; you don’t need much; no matter how small the slick, a shark can smell it from
miles away. Now that you have the boat and chum, the next thing to do is find a mako. On the West Coast, we are fortunate to have the continental shelf only a few miles offshore. On the east coast, you’ll have to venture a bit farther offshore. Keep your eyes peeled for working birds and surface-busting bait; constantly check the water temperature looking for readings between 66 and 70 degrees. But, be patient when chumming. I will wait at least an hour or an hour and a half before moving to another spot, but there have been occasions when the sharks made their appearance within a few minutes of 1 ½ hours. Once in the slick, makos will stick around for most of the fishing day. Drifting allows you to cover more water and in the process, attract more makos to your boat. By choosing the right season, having the right chum and chumming the right areas, you can count on hooking and releasing a good number of makos during the course of a single day on the water.

1,000-Pound Tournament Hammerhead Shatters Texas Record Photo courtesy of Texas City La Marque Jaycees/Facebook nglers hauled some big sharks out of the Gulf of Mexico during this year’s Texas City Jaycees Tackle Time Fishing Tournament. Chief among those sharks was a 1,033-pound great hammerhead that shattered a 37-year-old Texas state record. Tim McClellan obviously took first place for the giant shark he entered in the annual fundraising tournament for the Texas City La Marque Jaycees. The tournament awards the top three fish in multiple inshore, offshore and youth divisions. This year, it ran June 30 – July 9, and 964-pound and 817-pound tiger sharks rounded out the top three in the shark division. McClellan’s fish beat out the 871-pound Texas state record great hammerhead, which was caught by Mark Johnson in July of 1980. The current IGFA world record great hammerhead weighed 1,280 pounds. It was caught from the other side of the Gulf by Bucky Dennis fishing out of Boca Grande, Fla. in May 2006. Texas City is on Galveston Bay, just southeast of Houston, and offers easy access to the open Gulf of Mexico through the pass between Galveston and Goat islands.
