hile mystic grouper can be caught year-round in the Bahamas, the winter months are our favorite time of year. Whenever a weather window presents itself, we point our bow east across the Florida Straights in search of these deep-water bottom dwellers. Mystics are one of the lesser-known grouper species, simply because anglers don’t fish deep enough to target them. Like all grouper, they are excellent to eat and usually weigh from 15 to 50 pounds, although they can grow much larger. It takes special gear to fish the 800- to 1,200-foot depths where we find mystics. Armed with Shimano Tiagra 80 WAs and Shimano Tiagra 50 WAs equipped with Hooker Electric Autostop drives, we string up 65- to 100-pound Power Pro braid on Crafty One Custom’s Deep Drop Rods. We begin by paying close attention to our Humminbird Solix sonar with CHIRP HD digital technology to locate bottom structure. We look for cones, holes, drop-offs, ledges and deep-water ridges. Once viable structure is located, we position the boat above it with engines out of gear to judge how wind and current will manipulate our drift. Then the

boat is repositioned up-current from the structure and the deep-drop rigs are readied. When targeting mystics, we use our www.ThreeBuoysFishing.com grouper deep-drop rigs made with three 8/0 VMC 3x Circle Hooks on 100-pound branch lines off of 12 feet of 150-pound main line. For bait, we prefer fresh-cut 8-inch strips of dolphin, tuna, wahoo or barracuda. Many deep-drop anglers claim, “no light, no bite,” but our experience has proven that, especially with mystics, we catch more and bigger fish without lights. We deploy two rods on opposite sides of the boat. Lead weights in the 10-pound range are the rule of thumb, but weight can be adjusted to the current. After the weights hit bottom, the reels are left in freespool to lay the rigs straight down on the bottom. The engines should be used to decrease the boat’s drift to a standstill, if possible. If the boat drifts, let out line to keep the rigs on bottom. When the rod tip bumps and shakes, resist the urge to lock up the drag and retrieve line. Wait a minute or two for additional fish to sense the commotion. They’ll often eat the remaining baits. When it’s time to strike, lift the reel’s drag to strike (pre-set to 20 pounds of drag) and slowly start your retrieve. Big mystic grouper put up quite a fight at first, and you might even think you’ve hung bottom. Be patient and slowly gain as must line as possible. When fish are about halfway up, their air bladders expand and create lift. They will begin to float your rig up to the surface. For more tips and tactics on deep-dropping and the tackle and rigs to get tight, see www.threebuoysfishing.com. Finding bait becomes more important than at any other time of year. Goebel likes to get out well before dawn in search of shad or herring flickering near the surface, especially when a big moon keeps baitfish active all night. Diving birds are also a dead giveaway. They are likely feeding on baitfish pushed by stripers from below. “A lot of times if there’s bait there, I won’t even worry about marking fish on the graph,” Goebel said. “I’ll just put out my lines and start fishing where the bait is.”

By Nick Carter

T

here aren’t many anglers willing to endure the frigid early morning temperatures of winter on a large reservoir. But for those who can handle a little discomfort, right now is the best time of year to hook up with the striper of a lifetime. Around the Southeast, in reservoirs where striped bass were introduced, falling water temperatures spur changes in behavior that make the largest fish in the lake susceptible to anglers. Those 30- to 50-pounders are feeding up right now. They’re storing up reserves that will take them through the spring spawn. “It’s trophy striper season,” said Shane Goebel, of Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service. “The bigger fish are participating a little better. This time of year, we start going after those big ol’ hogs that are chasing the big baits.” The large summer schools broke up months ago. Stripers are spread out and on the move, following baitfish into the creek mouths and up into the backs of the creeks. Big fish move shallow when water temps hit the mid to low 50s on the lakes Goebel guides in the mountains of north Georgia and western North Carolina. It might take some searching to find them, but the rewards can be huge.

Because the stripers are continually moving with the bait, covering water is crucial. Goebel said to troll as many baits in as wide a spread as you can handle. Herring are great on lakes where they are present, but this time of year you should also work some big gizzard shad or trout into the spread. Sometimes it takes a big mouthful to convince big fish to eat. Goebel runs baits 30 to 40 feet behind planer boards. He’ll drop freelines 100 to 150 feet behind the boat. If the area where he finds bait isn’t too shallow, he’ll put a little bit of weight ahead of the baits on the inside boards to cover more water vertically. He slow trolls at about half a mile per hour. This is a pattern Goebel fishes all the way into May, when stripers have moved into a pre-spawn phase. It might not produce the numbers of fish that downlining into summer mega-schools will, but the fish are generally a lot bigger than those 5- to 10-pound summer schoolies. If catching an enormous striper sounds like fun, zip up your parka and get out on the lake. It’s trophy striper season. Check out Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service at bigolfish.com.

f Costa Rica isn’t already on your bucket list, it should be. Famous for both inshore and offshore fishing, it’s also a country with incredible biodiversity and exciting eco-tourism opportunities. In short, there’s something for every sportsman and adventure seeker here. From a fishing perspective, the west coast of this Central American country is most favored with several significant cities and ports including Jaco, Quepos and, of course, Golfito. It’s Los Suenos, however, where

my wife, Felicia and I found outstanding action on a trip last April. We worked the inshore grounds, catching huge roosterfish, rainbow runners, grouper, jacks and even mahi. We also decked a big cubera snapper. Of course, we did have an edge. Coastal Angler’s very own Costa Rica inshore reporter Capt. Carlos Arguedas and his first-mate son, Christopher, were our charter crew. “This really is a terrific place to fish,” said Arguedas, “We have access to a lot of different spots ranging from very close to the marina to 50 miles away. The roosterfish action is unbelievable here but we also catch big cubera snapper, amberjack, groupers and huge red snappers, too.” Arguedas loves to take clients for roosterfish because they fight so hard, are found close to port, and grow big. He’s had a 90-pounder grace his deck. For these, he’ll slow troll live baits like blue runners, herring, sardines or bonita. All of these baits, impaled on size 8 circle hooks, also attract other large predators; so you never know what to expect when the rod doubles over. “Roosterfish are very impressive when you first see them,” said Arguedas. “They are exotic-looking with big dorsal rays, a huge mouth and striped flanks. They are stunning to see for the first time. They are also exceptionally strong. Fight a 20-pounder and you’ll think you have a 40-pounder at the end of the line. They jump, too, and shake their head, so remember to lower your rod tip when that fish comes up or you’ll tear the hook free.” Among the other big fish that hit the deck for Arguedas’ crew on a regular basis are goliath grouper that can top 400 pounds. These are targeted around local reefs. If you want to run offshore, sailfish, tuna and marlin abound within 10 miles of port. Dorado, sometimes topping 30 pounds, can be tempted within sight of the coast. Costa Rica’s tropical climate makes it a year-round destination. Most travelers prefer to visit during the dry season, which runs from December through April, but you’ll find lighter crowds and lower travel prices during the “green” or rainy season from May to November. Whenever you visit, it really helps to work with a travel pro that deals frequently with Costa Rica to customize a trip here. Blue Water Sportfishing Charters (http://bluewatersportfishingcharters.com) specializes in setting up trips to Los Suenos. They can put you in the right place at the right time for the fish you want to catch, sights you want to see or adventures you want to experience. They’ll also book you with Capt. Carlos—or you can contact him yourself at www.wingmancr.com.

he first time I saw someone spearfishing, I was intrigued and wondered out loud how hard it would be to load a speargun. A friend heard me and said, “I’m sure you can do it. It’s probably more about technique than brute strength.” He was right. It’s not uncommon to struggle to load your first speargun, and you might suspect they made the bands too short. If you give it some time and use the right technique, it will become easy. First, some safety tips: 1) Never load a speargun out of the water. 2) Keep the safety on until you intend to shoot a fish. 3) Even with the safety on, treat it like a loaded weapon, never let the tip point at anyone. 4) Use tip protectors when not in use, so you don’t scratch anything. Some spearguns are loaded by resting the butt of the gun on your hip and pulling the bands toward the shaft notches. Others are loaded by resting the butt high on the middle of the chest and pulling the bands toward your sternum. Hip-loading spearguns are commonly used by scuba divers, as chest loading can be difficult when wearing a buoyancy compensator vest. Freedivers are less constricted by gear, so they normally use chest-loading spearguns. These have longer range because the shaft tabs sit closer to the butt of the gun. Now, some loading tips: 1) Wear gloves and wetsuit to prevent slips, scrapes or bruising. Some wetsuits have a loading pad built into the chest. 2) Don’t look down and hunch over when loading the bands. Push forward with your chest and pull the band swiftly with your arms, so the shaft tabs are pushed forward to meet the incoming

band. 3) Use a loading tab (if using a wood gun). This simple device makes things much easier by allowing you to first hip load the band to the loading tab and then raise the butt to your chest for the final pull. Although it’s a two-step process, it can be done quickly and will feel much easier. 4) If your bands are still too hard to load, use three longer bands. 5) Work out, lift weights, work on core and upper body. Try bench presses, seated rows, bent over rows, pushups and pull-ups. Bands and dumbbells can be incorporated into your workout routine, whether at the gym or home. If you want to see a band loading video, check out Coastal Angler online. And remember—you can accomplish anything you set your mind to! he action in northwest Costa Rica has once again been off the charts as FishingNosara celebrates its 10th season of charter fishing. All five boats are in the water and scoring big for their clients, with 51 trips logged in November. Big dorados are the staple catch this time of year, but it was a welcome surprise to see swarms of billfish in the mix. The team nabbed 12 marlin releases, 24 sailfish releases, 217 dorados, and five roosterfish releases. One of these roosters was a nearworld-record at 72 pounds. On Nov. 19, Capt. Alex on the Harvester posted the best trip of the month with Terry and Julie Edwards’ group. They loaded up the trophy case with excellent releases. A 300-plus-pound blue marlin was the headliner of the trip for these Texas anglers, and shortly after that battle, the 32-foot mega panga nabbed a wonderful sailfish release. Team Edwards came inshore to finish the day, and saved the best for last… that massive 72-pound roosterfish.

2

The IGFA All-Tackle Record for roosterfish is 114 pounds, and the second-place fish is 85 pounds. This fish caught by the Harvester wasn’t far off the second place catch. Most impressively, the above-mentioned IGFA record catches were posted in 1960 and 1954 respectively. This size of roosterfish has not been seen in more than five decades. On the same day, other members of Julie Edwards’ family had a big time on the 32-foot Discoverer with a blue marlin release of their own. Capt. Carlos estimated this fish at 250 pounds upon release. Also in November, FishingNosara Hall of Famer Bill Harris took to the 28-foot bar-room brawler Explorer and opened up her season with a billfish grand slam! A big blue marlin was the highlight of the morning, and it was followed by a late-day striped marlin. Bill nabbed the first marlin, and Mark Scott scored the second. A nice Pacific sailfish caught by Diane Turner completed the grand slam for these Tampa, Fla.based anglers. They didn’t go home empty handed, either, thanks to five big tasty dorado catches spread throughout the day. On the Discoverer, the team of Eli Bedran, Andrew Lipps, Kelsey Harry and Laurie Harry report a fantastic blue marlin release, the first of the year for the big battleship, plus six lovely dorados. John Purdy, John Van Diver, Mike Pickelsimer and Dale McElroy fished in early November and reported 11 sweet dorados on ice. The Harvester has been itching for action, and found what she was looking for as these monsters topped out at 60 pounds. The action was so hot that Capt. Alex chose to release the biggest cows so as not to hurt the stocks. Naturally, we have full reports of all these catches and more archived at Blog.FishingNosara.com, including videos. January and February will be super-busy and the spring months are already filling up fast. Get your plans together so we can secure your fishing adventure with FishingNosara, some of the best sportfishing in Costa Rica.

oel’s Distributing in south Florida has reached a milestone—40 years in business. Not many operations can make that claim, and so a look down memory lane seems appropriate. Tom Noel, aka Paddleboat Tom, moved to Florida from Michigan in 1979. He closed his grocery store, loaded a pickup truck with three paddleboats, his wife Joy, two sons, a daughter and the family dog and headed south. Tom set up shop in his garage in their Lake Clarke Shores home. After a few years, Joy put her foot down and insisted that he find a warehouse. Tom rented a space next to their current location, just off Forest Hill Blvd in West Palm Beach. A couple of years later he bought the 3,000 square-foot warehouse. Tom’s sons Rob and Tom are also involved with the business. Noel’s Distributing sells safety equipment, fire extinguishers, flares, rope, anchors and a warehouse full of other boating supplies to their clients, predominately in the Keys, along the east coast and in central Florida. They will ship anywhere. Many of their clients search them out for their custom rope splicing and then discover the realm of equipment they carry. If you are looking for anything marine related, it’s worth a phone call. They are generally a better value than the larger chain stores. Tom and his sons are very thankful for their longtime clients. ahoo Smackdown X, hosted by the historic Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina on Nov. 8-12, saw 23 boats competing for more than $25,000 in cash and prizes. Out of the 23 competing boats, 22 teams landed fish, bringing 152 wahoo to the scales in the process. Team Who’s Your Daddy took top team honors with 16 fish weighing a total of 231.5 pounds and took home $15,000 in cash winnings. Second place was Team Blitzsea, which earned $7,500 in cash for their 21 fish and a total catch weight of 206.4 pounds. Team Murderize, out of Freeport, Grand Bahama, finished third, taking home $2,500 in cash winnings for a catch of 11 fish with a total catch weight of 193.6 pounds. Team Little Giant caught the largest wahoo of the tournament at 50.7 pounds. Tournament festivities included live local entertainment nightly, a cocktail reception poolside for the captains’ meeting, a cookout on day one of the tournament, and a closing awards party on the great lawn, featuring a buffet, live entertainment and a full open bar. Sponsors for this year’s tournament include American Beverage Marketers (www.masterofmixes.com) as the Title Sponsor, Bahamian Brewery and Beverage (Sands), artist David Dunleavy, Tropic Ocean Airways, Caza Offshore, Live Wire Tackle, Flanigan’s, CS Custom Lures and Bimini Big Game Club. With more than 50-record-setting catches in the waters around the island, Bimini has often been referred to as the Sport Fishing Capital of the World. The Big Game Club opened for business in 1947. Owner Neville Stewart saw the promise and allure of fishing and personally developed and encouraged tournaments. He sold his interest to Bacardi, which over 30 years grew the tradition with many memorable tournaments. The current owners, the Southern California-based Hankey Group, put the iconic fishing resort back in play in 2010 and are completing a multi-million-dollar renovation, that includes numerous capital improvements to the rooms, restaurant and lounge, landscaping, new pool and a renovated 75 slip marina, including docks and seawall.

Spearfishing in The Gulf

intertime diving in Southwest Florida presents challenges, but as with every challenge comes opportunity. We are now entering prime cobia season and stud mangrove snapper will be on almost every spot. With cobia, just find a nice wreck and be ready to pull the trigger on the descent. Cobia will offer few opportunities to pull the trigger as they come in and quickly check you out. Be ready to battle with these fish and shot placement Anthony Segrich with a 90lb black counts. I cannot tell you grouper Speared on an Offshore Naples Trip in late 2017 how many divers have had spears bounce off a cobia’s hard head. Aim for just behind the gill plate and spine for the best chance at landing one. Mangrove snapper are one

of my favorites to eat, but not always the easiest to spear. A poorly placed shot and you are not only risking losing the fish, but also damaging the meat and losing some filet. Spearfishing snapper in general is tricky, as they are some of the most ‘Houdinilike’ fish and will figure out a way to get free. Of course, the water will be a bit chilly and the weather windows shrink this time of year. Pick your days wisely and wear a 5mm suit with a hood for thermal protection against the elements. It helps to Alex Uzaga with a Nice Cobia have your spots dialed in as well, because you do not want to be checking for new spots in chilly conditions. There is a major difference diving in cold water, between diving a spot with trophy fish or one with no fish. Adrenaline plays a factor and when you see a big fish, you seem to forget about the cold, at least for the moment! Kayak Fishing by Eric Henson

W

ell here we are with a fresh new year. Maybe it’s time to get out on the water and try something new... like maybe kayak fishing! Fishing from a kayak can be one the best ways to target many different types of fish. In my area the three main species that I love to target from a kayak while inshore fishing are snook, redfish, and trout. The fourth would be the tarpon but, they can be harder to target in the cooler months. Of course, there are also many other types of fish to catch like jacks, flounder, pompano, and cobia. Most of the time they are caught as a bi catch unless for some reason or another I decide to go out and target these other species (like when the wifey wants flounder for dinner). If you are serious about giving this sport a shot, the first thing to do is go to your local kayak store and sign up for one the kayak demo days. There are many brands out there to choose from so be sure to try different kayaks until you find the one that best suits you. There are no kayaks out there that will do everything perfectly as you might want them to do. Just like there are no perfect boats out there that can do EVERYTHING you want. Some are

super light/ heavy, long/ short, skinny/wide, paddle/ pedal‌ You just have to pick the one that suits as many of your needs as possible. When you are searching for the perfect yak, be sure to speak with a professional or person in charge at the demo to ensure you find the best kayak for all your needs. Next is picking out the perfect paddle. Most people pick out a nice kayak and cheap out on the paddle. Before you do that, again speak with a professional. They will be able to help you decide on the right paddle for the width of your kayak and the task you are trying to perform on the water. For me, having the right paddle is just important as having the right kayak. The other thing you can do is contact someone like me to go out on a kayak fishing trip or sign up for one of my kayak fishing classes where you can learn just about everything you will need to know. Whatever you decide, I hope you enjoy the new adventure that you are about to embark on. It is truly life changing. Tight Lines and Tight Knots to all! :) Eric Henson is the owner of Casting Kayaks LLC. a guided kayak fishing company out of Sarasota Florida. Inshore with Capt. Rachel

emperatures will surely drop this month, both air and water temperature. There are some days I find it nearly impossible to even try to fish. I’ve learned over the years to not be too determined to fish when the weather is too uncomfortable. Only when I’m really certain the tide is right and the conditions aren’t too intolerable will I push to go. I just keep in mind there are so many better days ahead to fish. If the water temperature is 65 and dropping you need water in structure or deep holes where fish will move to. Most species will tend to prefer live shrimp this time of year and if the tides are too low you get limited as to where you can fish. The reefs in open water are a great option for low tides as long as the wind isn’t too strong. Sheepshead will be a species targeted this time of year due to higher numbers gathering after fronts move through. These fish can be tricky to catch and may require some trial and error to figure out what works best for you. Bait will depend on what’s in the water but shrimp is a reliable bait and easy to find. Redfish and black drum are more cold tolerant than snook, therefore, fish live or cut shrimp around structures with current either weighted or not. If you can see the fish then they can see you. Most saltwater species have good eye sight and as the water clears just be sure to reduce the tackle. Decrease leader and hook size will improve catching rates. As with any time if your bait is repeatedly taken over and over with no catches then moving is the best option. Often smaller pin fish, sheepshead or snapper are stealing your bait, moving just a little distance will change your luck.

Inshore & Offshore Opportunities

very month of the year will present different challenges to anglers. This year should be no different in regards to knowing when or where to go in quest of a particular species. Each year at this time, I present my views on what I believe will hold true for the first half of the new year as to what species is best to target as follows: JANUARY- MARCH Sheepshead will lead the charge as the bigger fish migrate from the gulf waters and infiltrate docks, seawalls and mangroves. They will be found in creek mouths and back waters with structure, especially those areas with old piles and rocks. I fish for them with shrimp tails while periodically hurling the heads for chum. Use small #1 or # 2 size bait hooks. Snook have moved from the beaches to the canals and creek mouths. Artificial baits such as ‘twitchbait’ (MR 19 MirrOLure); Shallow running swim or ‘crank’ baits; weedless soft plastics or topwater plugs (Heddon Spook Jr.) will all produce. Preferred live baits are sardines, herring, pinfish, mullets and big shrimps. Jack Crevalle will prevail in canals and creeks. Almost any artificial presentation will work when they are feeding. Use Sardines or shrimp for live bait presentations. Spanish Mackerel will begin their migration southward. Artificial baits such as gold and silver spoons, Gotcha Lures for good action. Use wire leaders to prevent cutoffs. Watch for diving birds and usually the mackerel will be a part of the action together with Lady Fish. Grouper/Snapper move closer to inshore as water temperature cools. Reefs will hold fish. Shrimp, pinfish, sardines and squid are my baits of choice. APRIL-JUNE Seatrout will inhabit grass flats in 3’ to 6’ of water. Look for murky green color indicating sea grasses. Larger seatrout will be more prevalent during the early spring month. Artificial baits of all types will work. Also, fish shrimp under a cork (weighted or free-lined) suspended above the seabed. Tarpon will begin their migration from the southern waters of Mexico. Look for them off the beaches. Fish sardines, threadfins, mullets or big pinfish under a cork or balloon for best results. Anchor up ahead of their paths. Snook will begin to move from the canals and creeks to the beaches and passes. Redfish become more plentiful and larger inshore with higher tides and stronger currents. Look for them around oyster beds and mangrove islands on incoming tides. Big shrimp, cut pinfish, mullet and crabs are all great baits to use fished on the seabed or suspended under a popping cork. Mangrove Snapper are very tasty. Live cut shrimp on small circle hook placed under docks and around mangroves should yield plenty, for a nice meal. Triple Tail/King Mackerel/Cobia/Permit offshore may all join the party as waters warm. Trolling artificial lures for mackerel. Try big shrimp for tripletail and cobia. On the Fly by Capt. Mike Manis

s we enter the middle of our winter season, wind and low water will be a constant. As they’re tolerant to cooler conditions, I’ll concentrate on spotted sea trout and redfish. I also want to work the beginning of an incoming tide. In addition, I’ll split my time working sand holes on open grass flats and making my way back up back country creek systems. Up these creek systems, I like dead end coves covered with sand bottom. After a couple cool months, these creeks are a natural transition area for our game fish, as they’ll move up into these areas to warm up on the shallow sandy bottom. Multiple months of cool weather is also why I also like the early incoming tide. Bait has been scarce for long enough that these game fish will begin looking with some urgency. They feel the tide instantly and begin working up the creek or flat rushing to get a shot at what was unobtainable on low water. They know their chances are best early before the prey has a chance to vanish. Additionally, I’ll downsize my baits. Clouser deep minnows work well over the sand holes out on the grass flats and small baitfish patterns are good up the backcountry creeks. Out of the wind, I prefer a sevenSight-fished red. weight. However, if I’m out on an open flat in the wind, I like the punch a nine-weight delivers. A floating line is a good all around choice. The Placida ramp at Boca Grande and Ponce Park ramp in Punta Gorda provide good access to backcountry creek systems. From Placida, Bull Bay between Gasparilla Sound and Turtle Bay has lots of room to explore. From Ponce Park, south along the east side from Alligator Creek to Pirate Harbor is full of small creek systems. My favorite open grass flats contain a mix of sand and healthy turtle grass. Game fish like to hold on the grass edges that they use as ambush points. Mostly, they’re full of spotted sea trout; but, on a low incoming tide these flats provide a good opportunity to target tailing redfish. They’re being opportunistic just like the fishery in the creek systems. Pine Island and Gasparilla Sound as well as Lemon Bay are worth a look. In the harbor, pompano can be found on the hard bottom just off Cape Haze Point. Also, keep an eye on your boat wake as you’re running outside the bar along the west wall. Sheepshead are everywhere and can be fished from land as well as boat. On land, the Placida trestle is very popular. Every dock, pier, underwater structure, and artificial reef will hold sheepshead. Until next month, good tides. Captain Michael Manis is a U.S.G.C. Licensed captain and has been teaching the sport of fly and light tackle angling since 2002. it. I use a light/medium action rod, 4000 series reel spooled with 15lbs of braided line, any color; I use green, pink, and blue camo, tied with 3ft of 14lb fluorocarbon leader, #2 octopus circle hook and just enough weight to keep it down. Sheepshead have big eyes and those human looking teeth are the sheepshead’s God-given advantage to steal the bait from your hook. I also by Capt. James Vardas must recommend using a net to lift these delicious criminals into the boat. Our average sheepshead being 5lbs and we he winter fishing season is in full swing now. Last month frequently catch them over 8lbs. To prevent an injury from the was a transition from our fall patterns of cooler water and spikes, that’s right, imagine that 8lb fish with spikes landing on west winds. Now we are fishing into predominantly northeast winds, cold fronts, and water temperature in the 60° range. The your foot when the leader breaks lifting him out of the water, don’t get shanked by a prisoner, use a net! Once safely locked sheepshead bite took off in December and from the number of striped convicts gathering around the docks and bridges feasting away on ice, the next hazard can be cleaning them, but they are well worth it. Sheepshead here are delicious, probably because on barnacles and fiddler crabs, this will be a fantastic Anna Maria Island sheepshead season. When fishing during the colder they eat a lot of shrimp and crab, and yield a firm white meat when months, getting out of the wind is key to a more enjoyable cooked. My personal favorite recipe trip. You will find success when fishing in the direction of the current, pulling your bait toward the docks on the incoming and for them is called Poor Man’s Lobster. This consists of cooking the fillets in outgoing tides. When the tide is slack, fish around the bridges a cast iron pan with butter and Sprite and passes because the current won’t be so swift. I mainly use soda for about 3 minutes, after the live shrimp as bait to soda is hot enough to melt a stick of target these beautiful butter. Lift the fillet out of the boiling striped fish. When Sprite-butter mixture and serve. choosing the shrimp, Voila! It actually tastes like lobster. Let’s Take it Outside

or years now the number one question we all ask ourselves after the first of the year is “why can’t I keep my Resolutions”? After undertaking a huge study, aka: asking all my friends and family, I know the answer “because we make boring, hard and uninteresting resolutions”. This year strive to make resolutions that are fun to keep and that we look forward to. I want to encourage everyone to make the resolution of Taking it Outside and making the most of the outdoors in the great state of Florida. Nobody remembers their best day ever doing homework, working or watching TV, however, I bet you can tell me about catching your first fish or bagging your first deer. To get you started I have put together a list to jump start your outdoor adventures in Florida. The early part of the year in Florida is the time to consider two things: camping and manatees. There are so many parks and campgrounds, you won’t have any trouble finding one in your own backyard or across the state. Crystal River is the place to be when you want to get some manatees love, you can swim with them and be surrounded. When the Gulf waters start to get cold the Manatees move up the river where the temperatures stay at a warm 72° and they will spend their winter months. The Plantation on Crystal River offers some amazing off-season deals and they provide the boats, guides and wetsuits to take you on your journey with the Manatees. The Everglades Shark Valley entrance is a great place to grab your bike or rent one because they don’t allow cars past

the visitor’s center. There is a 65-foot observation towner that provides panoramic views for over 17 miles across what the Miccosukee called Kaa-ha-yat-le. If biking that far is too much but you still want a bird’s eye view of wood storks, ibis and great white herons, you can take the two-hour tram that covers 15 miles of the park. America’s only state park with horseback riding on the beach is in Amelia Island, northeast of Jacksonville. Take a ride with Kelly Seahorse Ranch along the shoreline and through the hardwood forest trails on an invigorating five-mile one-of-a-kind ride. The way to keep those resolutions is to keep it real, take it outside and keep it fun. I am inviting you to watch my video series with the Tampa Bay Times “Let’s Take it Outside” where you can watch exciting outdoor adventures and get new idea’s every week for you to “take it outside” yourself. Go to www. tampabay.com/outdoors to watch the new series. If you have a great idea and want me to film an outdoor adventure with you, contact me. Happy New Year and Let’s Take it Outside. ack in September of 2018 I booked a fishing trip for our honeymoon to Cabo San Lucas, the billfish Capital of the World. During the planning process, we decided to include filming an episode of The Journey TV show from the Outdoor Channel. Dave Watson, the producer and good friend of ours, chose a deserving man as our special guest. Kerry Slaven aka (PAPA BEAR) has devoted his life to providing children with life threatening or terminal illnesses a special trip of a lifetime. Papa Bear created a nonprofit

organization called “Brave Young Hearts” after losing his granddaughter Bethany at the age of 4 ½ years old from cancer. Brave Young Hearts believes that just one chance of “a normal day ” may be the only time or the last time for some of these kids to enjoy something fun outdoors. Some of the trips they provide to children with illnesses include camping, horseback riding, fishing and hunting adventures. Whatever a child’s dream is, that is what Brave Young Hearts wants to provide to them. This fishing trip was also donated by an amazing friend of ours Captain Alex Rogers with Protocol Sport fishing. “Papa Bear” was accompanied by his wife Diane for the two day fishing adventure. Our goal was to help him catch and

release a Big blue Marlin. The first day of fishing was full of excitement. We hooked and fought two different blue marlin, only to lose them jumping high out of the water and pulling the hooks. Shortly after noontime another rod goes off and this time we are hooked up solid on a Big Blue Marlin. Papa Bear is on the rod and the weather is really bad; it is pouring down rain on all of us. After about a thirty minute battle, we are at the leader. It’s a fair catch and release and he has successfully landed his first billfish! WOW…. The excitement from Papa Bear and all of us was overwhelming with high fives and tears of joy. We were thrilled to be part of this special experience for such a deserving man !!! The second day was just as fun as Papa Bear caught his first mahi mahi (dolphin) and we had a local restaurant cook it up for the celebration dinner that night for everyone to enjoy. The memories from this trip will last a lifetime for all of us. A big thanks to The Journey TV show. They provide people who live their lives doing unselfish acts and giving their time to helping others, a hunting or fishing experience of a lifetime. Another Day at the Office

by Capt. James Marko

G

enerally, around October and November you can find an amazing Pelagic sport fish called a cobia in shallow water. It’s one of the few Pelagics that actually come inshore. During the fall a lot of fish start migrating north and south to new fishing locations to hold up during the winter. Cobia seem to be one of those fish and generally when they’re moving, they’re in a small schools from 2 to 6. I’ll be completely honest and it’s probably one of the biggest tips I can give you about finding them inshore, but look for giant stingrays. Yes, I said stingrays, I don’t know why but cobia love to trail big stingrays in the flats. Yes, I’ve caught cobia offshore, there’s been plenty-of times they’ve come into my chum slick. Which, by the way, is awesome to see a pack of fish that look like 3-4-foot sharks come haul through your chum slick looking for some fresh bait. Generally, when you find a school they’re very aggressive, you can easy trick them on lures,

but my personal favorite choice of bait is a live pinfish. I’ve also caught them vertical jigging squid on the bottom, but I’ve been most successful using pinfish. Cobia have to be 33 inches to the fork and you can only keep 2 a day per vessel. Filleting the cobia isn’t difficult, but you gotta know that the spine that runs down their body is actually rigid, so when you make a cut into them actually do it at an angle instead of an actual straight cut. Another useful tip is having a gaff ready to land this fish. All hell breaks loose when they get next to the boat! Also, be ready with another bait if you hook into one because there’s generally always another one trailing. The state record is 130lb out of Destin. I couldn’t even imagine how big that thing was. Good luck targeting these guys, if you’re in water under 70°, generally you won’t find them. That’s it, my last tip. We all gotta learn first-hand, sometimes sooner than later. Be sure to check out my Instagram @captjamesmarko for all my daily catches and contact me through Goliathfishing.com to book a trip. Till next month tight-lines ladies and gentlemen. Gulf Red Snapper Meetings Slated FWC photo by Allen Peirce he Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council is holding public hearings and a webinar to solicit public comments on Draft Amendment 50—State Management of Recreational Red Snapper. This amendment would, if approved, allow state management in future years and would provide flexibility to the Gulf states to set the recreational red snapper fishing season and potentially other management measures. FRESHWATER

Since 2015, Frabill has continued to set the quiet standard in bucket conversion. The Frabill Whisper Quiet Aerator system is a portable, aeration design that provides the utmost discretion when fishing with live bait. Constructed with 75 years of experience, the Whisper Drive Aeration Motor has been specifically designed and tested to keep saltwater baitfish and crustaceans healthy and active while emitting minimal sound. With a couple of batteries, the Whisper Quiet Aerator converts any size cooler or bucket into an oxygen-rich livewell. Frabill’s top-of-the-line signature yellow air stone creates enough bubbles to effectively aerate up to 15 gallons of water. As a result of its over-engineered rugged design, Frabill’s Whisper Quiet Aerator has a long shelf life. The aeration system includes premium water-resistant internal parts that help prevent corrosion and won’t let an angler down. Never be surprised by battery rot again.

Surprising Winter is the Best Planting Time

I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly

at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste

better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature. Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant.
