TAMPA BAY FISHING REPORT BY: CAPT. WOODY GORE

Zach decided to wade after his first snook that was caught on the rocks. He jumped out of the boat and landed it. Zach, a neat young man had a good “Gotcha day” Capt. Kevin Overstreet. Captwoodygore.com

M

oving water and a live well full of sardines and pinfish will work for snook. Don’t be surprised if you don’t drag a redfish or gator trout off the same broken bottom grass flats. If you’re wanting to snag that snook of a lifetime with the heart-stopping action of a topwater lure, I would suggest tieing on a MirrOlure Top Dog Jr. and walk-the-dog, letting it rattle across that same broken bottom grass flat. Soon, you’ll witness the most incredible strike as a giant snook crashes your lure. Always

remember that really big snook are females and probably full of eggs, so handle with care. If you have to lift her out of the water do it gently, then snap a quick photo and return her gently back into the water reviving her slowly. Finding mackerel is fairly simple. Just locate a spoil bar or inshore reef. Once you’re anchored up-tide from the reef or bar, start pitching a few sardines into the water. If they are close, it won’t take long before the feeding frenzy starts. Use a 2/0 long-shank hook on a 50-pound leader tied to your 15# Seaguar braid on your spinning reel. Nose hook a threadfin or sardine, toss it into the strike zone and hold on tight. Many folks don’t believe it, but mackerel are good table fare. For those you keep, bleed them promptly getting them on ice quickly. The big trout have started to show up on our flats along with plenty of slot fish. Find a good grass flat with plenty of potholes, I usually refer to these flats as broken bottom flats. Start by working the edges of as many potholes as possible. Trout aren’t too picky and are a good species to hone your artificial lure skills. One good artificial is a DOA Measles shrimp under a popping cork. Hook the shrimp like you would a live one--through the carapace or top

of the head. Then cast it out and pop the cork. The popping sound draws the trout’s attention to the bait. Remember, take only what you plan on eating for supper because they do not freeze well. Sea trout are a fragile species and have a delicate slime coat. Please use wet hands or a de-hooker and not dry-hands, rags, or a landing net for the ones you plan to release. If you’re looking for some late summer fun, particularly for the youngsters, take them snapper fishing. Not only are these fish fun to catch, but they are great eating. Small freelined greenbacks or pieces of fresh shrimp around markers, bridges or rock piles will usually result in a limit of fish. If the tide is a little strong, add enough split shot to keep the bait down 3 to 6-feet. Don’t forget a chum bag. “Give Me a Call & Let’s Go Fishing” Captain Woody Gore is the area’s top outdoor fishing guide. Guiding and fishing the Tampa, Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs, Bradenton, and Sarasota areas for over fifty years; he offers world class fishing adventures and a lifetime of memories. Single or multi-boat charters are available. WWW.CAPTAINWOODYGORE.COM wgore@ix.netcom.com 813-477-3814

SEEK REFUGE IN THE RIVERS FOR WINTER TIME SUCCESS BY: CAPT. MIKE ANDERSON

L

ooking for a great way to beat the cooler temps and wind of December, January and February? Try fishing the five incredible rivers that dump into Tampa Bay. It’s a great place to spend all your winter time on the water. These rivers; the Alafia, Palm, Hillsborough, Little Manatee and Manatee all offer great winter time fishing for all kinds of species. They also provide a perfect place to hide from winter’s breezy and cooler conditions. Snook take refuge in the rivers where freshwater springs, dark bottoms and deep channels provide a safe zone from chilly water temps. As water temps cool down, snook tend to change their eating habits and save their energy for battling the cold. But, plenty of action can be had by slowing down the presentation of your plastics and by fishing live shrimp. Live shrimp are much easier to digest than a sardine or finger mullet and will often be the food of choice this time of year. Snook aren’t the only action to be had up the rivers though. Speckled trout usually stage near the mouth of the rivers in the deeper holes. They are very tolerant to the cold water and can offer hours of steady, tasty action.

Artificial lures such as the MirroLure Lil John, Marsh Minnow’s and Strike King’s Trout Magic rig all work well for trout action in the rivers. Use a ¼ ounce jig head to work the deep holes slowly. You’ll also find the Redfish action steady with some great dock fishing in all five of these river systems. Redfish, especially 17 to 23 inchers, seem to be creatures of habit in these rivers. Once I find a line of docks that hold good numbers, I make a note of it since redfish seem to hold there year in and year out. Good numbers of ladyfish and jacks can be caught in the rivers this time of year. This just adds to the action of the day. Water temps will be key, as anything south of 70 degrees will push fish into these areas. Don’t let the windy cooler conditions of winter foil your fishing. Spend some time learning these five Florida river systems and you’ll be rewarded all winter long, year after year! Catch Capt. Michael Anderson every Saturday for Reel Animals Saturday on 970WFLA from 6:00am to 8:00am and Sunday mornings on AM620 for the TA Mahoney Co. Reel Animals Radio Show from 7am to 9am, or to book a trip call 1-866-Gamefish.

Stir in the flour to distribute evenly. • Add the stock, juice from 2 cans of chopped clams (reserve clams), cream, bay leaves, and potatoes and stir to combine. • Bring to a simmer, stirring consistently (the mixture will thicken). Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook 20 minutes, stirring often, until the potatoes are nice and tender. • Next, add clams and season to taste with salt and pepper, cook until clams are just firm, another 2 minutes. Serve with lemon and oyster crackers optional. Yum!

COOLER WATER HAS FISHING HEATING UP BY: CAPT. ANTHONY CORCELLA

T

he first big cold front of the season has finally ushered in the fall season and lower water temps. This has the fishing on fire. The inshore and near shore bite is in full swing. Reds, snook, trout, flounder, snapper and sheepshead are your best bets inshore, with snapper, grouper, mackerel, and kingfish near shore and on the reefs in the bay. It’s possible to have a shot at all of the species on one full day trip. The low tides in the mornings are a perfect time to target the inshore bite, as the fish will be stacked up in the deeper potholes and channels surrounding the flats. Whitebait is still around and works like magic. A freelined live shrimp is a great go-

to-bait. Cut bait like threadfin, pinfish and ladyfish will catch all of the inshore species except for the sheepshead. If you’re targeting sheepshead and snapper around the docks, rockpiles or bridges, live shrimp is a safe bet. Cut shrimp has its days, so always have a few dozen fresh dead on board even if you don’t bring live. For the lure fisherman it’s the peak time of year. They all will work--topwaters, jigs, spoons and subsurface. As the tide comes in and scatters the fish, it’s a good time to check the inshore and near shore rockpiles that are scattered throughout the bay. Grey snapper, mangroves, sheepshead and gags are stacked up on the structure, the shipping channel and around most of the towers. Live pinfish and whitebait are best bets, as is cut threadfins and live or frozen shrimp. Cobia are a welcome addition to the party and tripletail will be around the markers and buoys too. The mackerel, both king and Spanish, will be around the bait schools. Look for the birds and the macks will also be there. For Spanish, live whitebait and shrimp are a safe bet. Small silver spoons or Gotcha lures will provide steady action too. If targeting the kingfish, slow

trolling a live blue runner, sardine or ladyfish on a stinger rig is a proven technique. A spoon or diving plug trolled on a planer is also a tried and true method for the hard bait crowd. The areas around the Skyway are top mackerel and kingfish grounds. The red tide really hit the areas west of the Skyway. All snook and redfish are catch and release only per FWC. Also, take what you need and release the rest on all other fish. Now, it’s time to take these tips and get out there and fish! What makes our charter service unique is that we cater to disabled veterans and wheel chair bound clients! Our boat is able to accommodate wheelchairs and is ADA compliant. IF YOU’RE A DISABLED VETERAN YOUR TRIP IS FREE!!! This is our way we give back to our veterans. Capt. LOCAL PRODUCTION COMPANY, BLUEWATER MEDIA MAKES WAVES IN THE FIGHT AGAINST OCEAN POLLUTION BY: CAM STAFF

C

learwater, FL- Bluewater Media, a Clearwater based advertising and marketing firm is helping our oceans through their client work. The company, noted for its success in producing direct response commercials for wellknown brands such as Phillips, Thundershirt, Blackstone Grills, Greenworks and more has also had a history of working to help the environment. Earlier this year, they produced a commercial for 4Ocean, an organization dedicated to ocean clean up that sells bracelets made from recycled ocean waste to fund the continued removal of trash from the ocean. Just a few years ago, they helped to edit and produce famed fisherman, artist and conservationist Guy Harvey’s television series Portraits from the Deep. Back in October, Bluewater got the call from their SodaStream client to help document ocean, mangrove and shore clean up in Roatán, Honduras. The goal was to capture and share the volume of ocean waste and the affect that single use plastics have on the environment. “We can’t clean up all the plastic waste on the planet, but we each need to do whatever we can. The most important thing is to commit ourselves to stop using single-use plastic”, exclaimed SodaStream CEO Daniel Birnbaum. SodaStream products, by design, help consumers reduce the number of single use plastics by enabling them to produce their own soda and sparkling water right at home. “When we were presented the opportunity to go with SodaStream to work in Roatán, Honduras we jumped at it, we love helping our clients make a positive environmental impact. Admittedly, it seemed SodaStream was taking on a daunting task--the amount of trash and plastic waste was sickening”, said Bluewater Media’s President of Production Rob Fallon.

F a l l o n continued, “actually seeing the problem first hand was life-changing, we have to change the way we live, and we have to understand the waste single use plastics creates”. Fallon concluded saying, “although the clean-up effort only made a small dent in the mess, the documenting and sharing of the problem can shock, educate and impact others to change their habits; we’re proud to work with a company as courageous as SodaStream, they’re leading the change and providing an environmentally responsible solution.” Currently the video documenting the cleanup effort has reached nearly 1 million views on Facebook alone. SodaStream’s cleanup delegation included 150 SodaStream executives from 45 countries, international environmental specialists, NGO Plastic Soup Foundation and hundreds of children from seven different local schools with local Honduran government officials. The children also received educational sessions from environmental experts to become ambassadors for the environment within their community. HERNANDO COUNTY

THE BUG BY: CAPT. JOEL GANT

D

o you remember the first time you got the “BUG,” the fishing bug that is? Did a family member take you fishing or did you run with your friends after school to a local fishing spot? For myself, it was both. My grandparents would take us every summer to some local lakes with cane poles and worms for freshwater fishing when we came up to Brooksville to stay with them. As a youngster, growing up in Safety Harbor, my friends and I

had plenty of fresh and saltwater places to fish after school. Being blessed to be born in Florida, fishing has always been my passion. If you are reading this great magazine, I know you have the bug too. I believe it should be our goal to help pass this obsession on to the next generation. I love to have young people on my charters and see the smiles when they hook up and land fish. Kids get bored quickly, so I like to get them on some fish to keep them busy. Grunts are a great fish to keep them interested. After 30 or more fish, they really start to understand the thrill of fishing. That’s when I hope they also get the “bug.” In this picture are two young anglers. One wanted a fishing trip for his birthday with his family. Gag grouper season closes the end of this month. The bite has been fantastic. A lot of 30-inch plus fish are being caught along with plenty of legal fish. With the cooler waters, red and gag grouper can be caught in shallow water. Look for rocks or

swiss cheese bottom. You can use live bait or frozen bait. If they’re hungry, they will bite what you throw to them. I recommend using heavy tackle. Use at least 60-pound line with a 7/0 hook and enough weight to keep the bait on the bottom. Be ready, because the shallow grouper will sometimes make a long run and try to find a rock to hide in. The trout bite is picking up. Trout can be caught on any of the grass flats or near the inshore rock piles. I like to use a 1/4 oz jighead with a 3-inch Gulp or a Zoom jerk bait. Drift fishing can be very productive in the grass flats. Just drift with the tide and bounce the jig off the bottom as you move. With this tactic you can cover a lot of ground and also catch mackerel, bluefish, sea bass and grouper. Have fun fishing--that’s what it’s all about. To all the “fishheads,” Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Get out there on the water and make some memories with friends and family. Capt. FRESHWATER FISHING REPORT

LAKE ALFRED, AUBURNDALE, WINTER HAVEN AREAS BY: RON SCHELFO

M

erry Christmas! Reports of limits and good size speckled perch have been coming in from all over Polk County. This has been a fantastic year for spec fishing, and we are currently prime-time from now through April. Here in Lake Alfred, we are getting great reports of limits on one pound and larger from Lakes Rochelle, Alfred and Haines. Our local anglers are having best results using live minnows with yellow jigs. We are also seeing many bass in the 3 to 5-pound range--primarily being caught on lipless crank baits and chatter baits. The Auburndale area reports excellent bass and spec fishing on Lakes Juliana and Ariana. The best spec results on Lake Ariana have been night-time fishing from the pier at Max Beach using live minnows. Heading over to the South Winter Haven Chain of lakes, our best reporting lakes are Cannon, Shipp, Howard and May fishing by boat, from the piers or in the canals. As the temperatures drop, the shallow water in the canals cools faster making it an ideal environment for spec fishing.

Year after year, with the cooler temperatures and higher water levels, Central Florida offers some of the very best fresh water fishing in Florida! The 20th season of Ron’s Tackle Box Weekly Bass To u r n a m e n t s has now ended. Our Bass Tournaments, whether weekly or special events, provide for great fishing and fun! Stay tuned for future developments DON’T FORGET . . Ron is always available for up-to-date fishing reports and locations, so come see him or give him a call! MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!! hug-a-lug…Chug-a-lug...Throw the bug makes you want to holler hid-e-ho, Chug-a-lug. God that was awful, almost as bad as being stuck in an elevator with jingle bells by the barking dogs on continuous loop. Which by the way, Merry Christmas-I’ll get to Happy New Year later. I really need to stop writing these things when I’ve been drinking (writer laughing). There is a fishing report in here somewhere and, for those of you who didn’t figure it out, it’s the Chug Bug time of year. The Chug Bug in chartreuse and mullet have both been very productive on trout, blues, jacks and, yes, even redfish. This nifty little lure with its familiar glup sound has been my go-to top water for the last few trips to the flats producing nice size trout and a consistent bite. I’ve had my best luck with a slow retrieve. I’ll give it a good twitch, then read a couple of chapters of war and peace then yank that sucker again. OK, maybe not that slow, but a slow retrieve seems to be the best. My personal theory is that the trout hear the sound of a fish in distress (the aforementioned glup) and come to see what’s for dinner. The slow retrieve gives them time to get there--this ain’t rocket science. I’m probably wrong, but as long as it’s working that’s my theory and I’m sticking to it. In our area, I’m seeing lots of sheepies coming in and they can be easily targeted back in the skinny water as they like to feed with their tail up and/or their back out of the

The Fisherman’s Candy Store water. So, all you have to do is get a shrimp close and wait for the bite. As always with sheepshead, don’t forget to set the hook just before he bites it-- just kidding. If you’ve caught sheepies, you know they are bait thieves extraordinaire. The black drum are starting to move back into the creeks and springs and I look forward to that winter time bite coming up. Redfish (at least for me) have been spotty. I’m finding them, but the little buggers are making me work for it. Higher tides to the turn seem to be the best, again at least for me! Well, gotta go work on my Christmas list and see if I can get anybody to even check it once. That cologne made from menhaden oil last year wasn’t exactly what I was hoping for, but the cat seems to like it! Merry Christmas and see you next year. CAPT. SERGIO’S CORNER

WHAT CHRISTMAS MEANS TO ME BY: CAPT. SERGIO ATANES

C

Becky G. with a nice flounder using a Fishbites shrimp on 1/8 oz. jig head.

hristmas has many meanings for each one of us, family time with our relatives, the kids are home from college and a good time to bond with old friends. Christmas is also a time to thank God for our health, family and giving us such a great country that we live in with freedom. The older I get, the more I realize how important it is to spend time with our loved ones. I look back at all the missed opportunities I had of bonding with my kids. I now look forward to taking my grandkids on fishing trips during the Holidays. Maybe it’s my way of making up for the lost times I should have spent with my sons. Now, having said all of this, December brings many surprises to anglers of Tampa Bay--it all depends on the weather. If it’s a warm month, we can count on large schools of redfish around the many

G CERTI IFT F AVAIL ICATES ABLE!

WORK

SIDE STEPS

mangrove islands and trout on the shallow flats. A warm month can keep many species such as mackerel and cobia in our bay waters which are usually gone by mid November. A cold December is a different story. Look for redfish around deep water docks. Use live shrimp with a 1/0 circle hook and a small split shot about 6 inches from the hook. This keeps the bait close to the bottom where the water is warmer and the fish are most active. Flounder is another species you can count on around docks this time of year. For them, I prefer using a small jig head with a small live shrimp hooked through the tail (not the head) and dragged along the bottom. Cast the jig toward the shoreline parallel to the dock and bounce it along the bottom until you reach the front of the dock. Continue this method on both sides of the dock going from one dock to another. This allows you to cover the entire area around a dock where the flounder are waiting on their prey. Snook would have made their way up the rivers and creeks looking for warmer water. Remember that snook slow down on their bite this time of year. So, cut bait works great on the bottom. Live medium shrimp with the tail cut off is another great bait to use. I prefer to use a small split shot to keep the bait on the bottom. In many cases I will work the shrimp along the edges of the river or creek bed where the snook are most likely to be waiting for food.

Warm water outflow from the different power plants will be another haven for snook, cobia, trout and sharks. The best time to fish the outflow is just before sunrise to about 10 am. As the sun gets higher in the sky the fish tend to move to the mouth of the hot water outflow. I suggest you start as close as you can to the outflow and work your way through the channel as the sun rises. The cold water means clear water. You will need to drop down on the size of your leader and tackle to help increase the bite. I notice in cold water months, I have to down size my leader to 15 pounds in order to get the fish to bite. I would start with 25-pound test fluorocarbon leader and work down from there until you find what’s working for you. The lighter leader means you have to take a little more time in fighting the fish. But, the increase on the number of bites is well worth it. Captain Sergio Atanes is a native resident of Tampa and has been fishing the water of Tampa Bay and Boca Grande for over 45 years. FLATS TO NEARSHORE REPORT BY: CAPT. GARY BURCH

F

ishing in Clearwater Bay and St. Joseph Sound during December will take a lot of patience and a great deal of searching. There should be many good fishing days in and around the cold fronts that pass through our area. November turned out to be above normal in temperature and the water temps were in the middle 70’s. Keep in mind that the normal average water temperature in December will most likely be just around the 60-degree range. Hopefully, these temps will come down slow and steady instead of a big cold front blast that drastically drops the water temps some 10 to 15 degrees. This cooler temp will make your targets sluggish and slow to bite. If you are fishing with artificials, slow the action

down. Trout will be the targeted species for the winter with redfish, sheepshead and the occasional pompano making their appearance. As the water temperatures cool down into the 60’s and even into the 50’s on occasion, the white baits that we have been using all year become very hard to find. Shrimp under a float will work fine for the winter trout. Adjust the distance from your float to the hook according to the water depth. You want to keep the bait just off the bottom. Bring out your favorite artificial baits because they can catch as many fish as live baits this time of year. Also, you can cover a lot more ground throwing fake baits. Finding the trout is easy, but catching the big gator trout is more difficult. Start searching on the numerous grass flats that stretch from north Dunedin to Clearwater in about 3 to 5 feet of water. Look for the sand holes that dot the grass areas and start drifting as many as you can. Most of the flats with this type of bottom structure will hold

fish. When you find the area that is producing the biggest fish, work it hard. There may be a big 26-inch gator trout lurking. Remember, you can only keep 4 trout per person. Only one of those 4 trout can be over 20 inches. Current FWC info states, snook and redfish are catch and release only in areas affected by red tide through May 10, 2019. Areas include Tampa Bay (including all of Manatee and Hillsborough counties), as well as, all of Pinellas and Pasco counties starting Friday, Sept. 28. Catch and release redfish this month can be a hit and miss expedition. Use the high tide to look up around the mangroves and oyster bed shore lines. If the area has grassy flats with sand areas mixed in nearby, that’s a plus. The reds can be very spooky, so use your stealth mode to locate. Live shrimp and cut bait will work just fine. Don’t forget to investigate docks during the winter. A lot of dock type structure throughout Clearwater and Dunedin bays will hold fish. Throw your baits directly under the

dock and hold on. If you pull the fish out of the dock as quickly as possible, you’ll have a good chance of landing. All docks are not created equal, so keep moving. Santa Clause may bring you a new fishing outfit and some record catches to go with it. December fishing is here, so get on board, grab a jacket and let’s get fishing. Capt. Gary Burch owns and operates All Catch Charters and specializes in live baits and artificials. He guides inshore, flats and backcountry from Clearwater to Tarpon Springs. To reach Capt. ST. PETE REPORT WINTERTIME COBIA

BY: CAPT. CHRISTOPHER TAYLOR

Semin ar Glen P by Dec. 1 la 9t 6:30p h m.

W

ith the start of Winter and the weather being chilly, many anglers are looking to wet their lines as the new year starts to race by targeting winter-time species. Cobia have made their way into Tampa Bay in great force. They are well known for their dominant presence during the late fall and early winter months. They can be found at any of the St. Petersburg grass flats, bay reefs, and channel markers. I always head to my favorite Cobia spots this time of year to find them. Cobia desire the same structure and environment as other inshore pelagics. A place to hang out and ambush baits passing by. Choice baits to use are live shrimp, and scaled sardines. These baits should be presented on a size 2/0 - 3/0 hook free-lined, or with a split shot--or your favorite cork. You can find live shrimp at just about any bait and tackle store in the area. Some bait shops sell scaled sardines, but most of the time you have to use a cast net to catch them. I recommend catching enough to use for bait, as well as, a few extra for chumming. You will be able to find these baitfish at the channel markers and shallow-to-deep transition areas nearest boat channels. I use a 10-foot 3/8”mesh Humpback cast net to gather my bait. I can usually

catch enough bait for a trip in one or two casts due to the ease of opening in the net design. Take advantage of the cooler water temperatures, as the fish are more active in the shallows. You can sight cast, or drift fish for cobia. I recommend throwing a Livingston Lures Pro Sizzle “Gold Digger” colored topwater. This is one of my top choice cobia artificials to use if you desire to cover a large area in a small amount of time. If you’re fishing the bay side of St. Petersburg, I recommend stopping at “Mitch’s Bait and Tackle” off of 62nd Ave. and 4th St. Mitch always has everything you need for a good day of fishing. A DAY IN THE LIFE: CRABBING IN TAMPA BAY BY: PAUL PRESSON

W

ith stone crab season open and the neverending blue crabbing, it is just another day for this father and son team. Their “office” just happens to be Tampa Bay and the rivers that feed into it. An independent way of life--no dealing with cubicles or a boss breathing over their shoulders. They search the “seas” daily to harvest the delicious bounty that the bay has to offer. It is back-breaking work, but a way of life they love. As they approach their 2018, 23-foot Hanson, which is custom made for stone crabbing, the traps are already in place. It is unseasonably warm, but there is a gentle breeze as they shove off. Stone crab season has just opened and it was time to bait and soak some traps. Stone crabs are a brownish red with gray spots. These creatures are considered delicious table fare. While in season, the claws of stone crabs are harvested. These claws will grow back within a year. The crew has to examine each crab thoroughly. Female crabs with egg sacks must be released immediately. All crabs must be of legal size and all of the licenses and permits must be obtained to fish commercially. The boat slows as the determination is made to start throwing the industrial plastic traps made specifically for this type of crabbing. Today, they are using freshwater shad as bait. The bait is placed in the trap. The colorful float, containing identification information, is thrown off the boat. The plastic trap follows thereafter. The orange floats are reminders of where the traps have been set. This is not only very physical; the crew depends on new and historical data as to where to place the traps. They must also consider other individuals traps that are already out. One after another, the traps are being thrown. The senior of the two (Dad), decides it is time to put more out at a different location. With the breeze and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge as the

backdrop, it is a sight to behold. Now it is time to let the traps soak (many times, for days) and entice the crabs. The boat is empty and it heads for home, but this is just half the story. Once docked, Dad gets a chance to rest. Now, it is time for his son to go solo. In a 19-foot handmade aluminum vessel, he will check the blue crab traps. Blue crabs are a delicacy and the beauty of their coloration is second to none. The traps are made of wire mesh and have been soaking for days. With fine-tuned precision, the boat twists and turns to retrieve the traps. New bait is placed in each trap to be checked

again in a few days. Blue crabs fill the basket until the last trap is checked. The boat heads for home where the crabs will be processed and then sent to market. Thank you Captains Jeff and Hayden Horne of “I Go A Fishin”. Their company offers fishing charters, bait sales, and of course, crabs. igoafishntoday@gmail.com Paul Presson, outdoor writer and published cartoonist. He has fished the coastlines of Tampa Bay for 28 years, land based, wade, kayak and by flats boat. If he is not writing, he is out on the water!

TAKE THE HOLIDAYS OUTSIDE FLORIDA STYLE THIS CHRISTMAS BY: MISTY WELLS I hope some of these ideas help you take your Holiday Gift giving “outside.” Happy New Year, and I look forward to sharing my writing with you in 2019. Merry Christmas from me to you & yours.

Y

es, it is that time of year again. Why not enjoy it and take the stress out of gift giving. I have come up with some fun, easy gift ideas that will make some great memories and not be shoved in a closet. My first gift idea is unique and, I promise, something the kids will never forget. Get out the mistletoe--it’s time to Kiss a Gator. The Alligator Attraction in John’s Pass is the perfect holiday gift that everyone will get excited about. You can hold, feed, kiss and take a photo with a live Gator. They also have lots of other critters to play with like potbelly pigs, pigmy goats, snakes, lizards and tropical fish. The Alligator Attraction is a Mom and Pop attraction and, it is affordable. No lines, no hassle, inside and easy parking at John’s Pass, Madeira Beach, FL. Why not paddle your way to some fun. If you have not tried paddle boarding, it is a must do and it’s easy. I found a great place located on the Dunedin Causeway called “Livin Salty Paddle Sports.” It’s awesome. Stop by the store and meet Todd Henkel the owner and take a paddle out on the water. He gives lessons and group classes. Todd will drop off your board at the beach, so you can paddle over to many different Islands including Caladesi Island State Park. You can even bring your dog. Once you fall in love with the SUP life, Todd can hook you up with a great deal on a new or

used board or rentals. It’s a great way to keep the New Year’s resolution. Get outside and share some healthy memories with the family. Gift idea number three is a gift that will get everyone out of the house, off the phones and will put the fun back into family again. I am a huge fan of Freedom Boat Club, because you can have the lifestyle of a boat without the boat headache. It’s a hassle trying to figure out what to buy, where to store it, how to fix it, insure it and tow your own boat--but we all want one. So why not join the club where you can have access to seven different kinds of boats that are less than two years old and you never have to clean, fix or tow it. Ladies, not sure how to navigate the waters, dock the boat and practice boater safety? No problem, they have unlimited free classes. Trust me, the other 364 days a year, Santa is dreaming about his toes in the sand and his family off the land.

PASCO COUNTY BY: CAPT. BOBBY CARROLL

O

ur negative tides have arrived! This is the time of the year when wade fishing and kayaks sometimes have the advantage over your standard boats. What I like to try and do is, if I know that fish are in the area, I try to get my boat as shallow as possible for the last hour or so of the outgoing tide and anchor it so I can walk the area and fish it as stealthy as possible. Look for the mullet to be schooled up thick and, if you find them, you’ll find your redfish mixed in with them. Use topwater, spoons and weedless plastics to get the farthest cast possible to prevent spooking any potential fish that could be in that school. Remember that redfish is closed in our county until next year sometime at the earliest. So, catching one is strictly for bragging rights and trophy pics! As far as the trout fishing, find the deep holes and pockets at the

low tides and you should have no problem landing multiple trout with good quality size. I like using a ¼ ounce jig with a bigger plastic matched up to it. It seems that those big trout can’t turn down a big lazy bait. The gator trout have begun to move in and will be plentiful very soon. With that being said, make sure you follow your size and bag limits, so we can make sure these big gators are always around. Snook are all setup in their backwater and river winter time spots. I tend to not target snook during this time, because they are the most sensitive out of the trio of inshore fish. If you do still target snook, please make sure you handle them with care to prevent harming or possibly killing them. JANUARY 10-12, 2019 ORLANDO, FLORIDA By CAM Staff

S

urf Expo’s Bluewater category launched last year as an examination of the crossover occurring between fishing brands and the larger market of coastal life. Since then, the show has become a must-attend event for fishing and boating retailers savvy enough to stay ahead of the trends water-loving consumers crave. The world’s largest and longest-running board and watersports show has packed the floor of its Bluewater—offshore, inshore and freshwater fishing—category headed into the Jan. 10-12 show at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. Popular brands traditionally associated with the waterman and outdoor sporting lifestyle will show off their latest and greatest, giving retailers a hands-on first-look at the products that will drive the industry in 2019. Included in the Bluewater category are top brands like Bluewater sponsor Hell’s Bay Boatworks, Yeti, Otterbox, Fish Hippie, AFTCO, Guy Harvey, Marsh Wear, 5Fin, Salt Life, Bimini Bay, Hooked Soul, Heybo, XTRATUF, Dry Case, Bluewater Gear, Wave Life, Sunday Afternoons and more. Many of fishing’s big hitters will be there along with a huge contingent of brands that appeal to the on-the-water lifestyle. With the crossover evident in today’s marketplace, retailers and outfitters who target only their small niche are missing out on a powerful revenue source. Why sell to just the hardcore boater and angler when you could be unloading cool merchandise on the angler as well as his entire family? “The Bluewater section offers the opportunity for buyers to see the latest in trends for fishing and boating apparel and accessories at a time when retailers can leave their store,” said Kenneth Andres, with Surf Expo. “With our confluence from southern California, the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast, the Southeast, the Caribbean, Central and South America, this is a trend-setting show.” The economy is churning and consumer spending and confidence levels are higher than they have been for almost 20 years. Surf Expo is a timely opportunity for retailers to preview product for what promises to be a very busy spring season for fishing, boating and watersports retailers. “January is the best time to preview and order new product lines before the season starts,” said Andres. “Retailers can get out of their shops to talk with exhibitors and see and touch the product before they order, plus take advantage of early incentive discounts.” And for the angling marketplace, where there may be a down season but there is no off-season, Surf Expo will feature an array of exhibitors offering at-once product to fill the racks. This is an opportunity to stock the hottest new gear before the competition has even seen it. The show features more than 2,500 booths of apparel and hardgoods and a full line-up of special events, including fashion shows, awards ceremonies, education and demos. Average buyer and exhibitor turnout exceeds 28,600 attendees per show. And it’s a trade-only show, which eliminates the hubbub and massage-chair hawkers of open-to-the-public trade shows. Surf Show is intentionally held during retail down time—the January restocking period for outdoor-sports retailers—so it is a marketplace to get business done in a laid-back atmosphere. “When people come to the Surf Expo for the first time, they notice the relaxed, cool atmosphere. It’s that lifestyle we all buy into, and there are a lot of beautiful people at a surf show,” said Andres. “It’s just a great place to be if you’re in the watersports industry. If you’ve got a fishing, boating, or watersports shop, come check it out for yourself.” For more information, on January’s Surf Expo in Orlando, go to www. surfexpo.com.

very few years a new technique explodes on the bass fishing scene. Many of these trends just fade away, but some endure and become a part of every bass angler’s arsenal. The technique of the moment is the Ned rig. It is excellent for big numbers of spotted bass and smallmouths. It’ll catch largemouths, too. And it really shines when the fishing gets tough. On post-frontal days in winter, when bass are deep on vertical structure, it’s time to rig up a Ned and go to work. It is the perfect technique when bass are looking for a meal that is small and slow moving. A Ned rig is a miniature soft-plastic stick bait threaded on a light 1/8- to 1/32-ounce mushroom-style jighead. A drop of superglue holding the 3- to 5-inch worm to the jighead works wonders for making this rig durable. When fishing at winter depths, light line should be matched with a light spinning rod with a supple tip. Go as light as you dare, with 4- to 8-pound-test braid finished off with a fluorocarbon leader. When fish are active, a Ned worked steadily along the bottom is deadly. When they are sluggish, it’s better to let the jig sit on the bottom, allowing the bait’s vertical tail to do the work with the slightest shake of the rod tip. It’s not the most exciting way to fish, but it catches fish—sometimes when nothing else will.

hose who have seen his show “Man Fire Food” will recognize Roger Mooking as the iconic host of what has become the ultimate look at extreme outdoor or fire/smoke based cooking. Each week Roger introduces us to passionate and inventive outdoor cooking aficionados and an array of epic custom-built apparatuses designed to cook everything from 200-pound sturgeon to whole cows on a massive homemade spit. Roger’s visits give us insight into the innovative extremes outdoor cooks utilize in their pursuit of perfection. If you’re an outdoor cooking enthusiast, “Man Fire Food” is a must-watch program. We recently caught up with Roger to discuss the show’s success and rich content. CAM: Roger, your show has become a must-watch series for anyone who mans a grill. Why do you think your show has become so popular? Roger: Over the course of the last 7 seasons, we’ve seen an amazing array of outdoor and flame-inspired cooking devices and techniques featured on the show. If you love outdoor cooking, then you’re probably going to like the show. People just love being outside with loved ones. Backyard barbecues have been a longstanding tradition; in fact, you could say that tradition may even date back to the most primitive use of fire itself. There’s also something very special about slowing down and taking the time it demands to tend a hypnotizing fire and be immersed in the full experience, and getting to eat at the end of that entire adventure. The smells, sounds, sights of nature and breaking the hectic pace that a lot of us live at… it’s needed. CAM: So, you think cooking outdoors is somehow satisfying a primal urge? Roger: When I look back at some of the massive cuts of meat that have been prepared on previous episodes, it does seem like fire and food is primal, and I think we would all have to agree that cooking with wood, coals or heated rocks bridges a gap that is satisfying to those primal instincts.

CAM: What can we expect to see in future episodes? Roger: Humans all over the globe have been cooking with fire for many millennia now, and cultures all over the world have different ways of cooking with fire. I would like to explore extending the borders of the show to feature more places outside of the U.S. CAM: What advice would you offer the average outdoor cook? Roger: Just to enjoy the whole experience. I think the average outdoor cook is a more experienced cook, or else they would be a novice indoor cook. It takes a different level of attention to detail and mindfulness to cook outdoors because you have to deal with many other variables like wind, rain, keeping the fire going, how hot or cool is the fire, what are the hotspots, how much wood/charcoal do I need to add at a particular stage, bugs trying to get you, and all sorts of other things that you simply don’t have to worry about in a modern day North American kitchen with electricity and good shelter. Also, use the smoke as a seasoning advantage. You don’t need to add all kinds of stuff if you start with a freshly caught fish, some salt and a bit of good wood smoke; the work is already done, you just have to make sure you don’t get in the way or don’t burn the darn thing. It’s the magic of simplicity. CAM: How do you select the places that we see on the show? Roger: There is a very dedicated but small team of amazing people who find, research and vet all the potential locations for “Man Fire Food.” The winning candidates have endured hours of interviews and a barrage of questions as exhaustive as possible. The variables are so unimaginable to the viewer, and if we all do our jobs right, you have no idea how much work went into what looks so simple on TV. We’re always interested in looking at unique “Man Fire Food” subject matters. If any of your readers think they qualify, they should email: Contact@rogermooking.com. “Man Fire Food’s” new season premiered Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 9 p.m. on The Cooking Channel.

FISH & FISHING

m

Feeding Strategies MARK SOSIN What appears obvious may be deceiving. Most anglers erroneously believe that when predators corner a hapless school of baitfish, they simply open their mouths and swim through the prey, gorging themselves in the process. It doesn’t happen that way. A predator must isolate and attack one specific victim at a time. That’s not always an easy task. A frantic school of baitfish sensing predators can appear as a shimmering mass of silver with each individual member of the school constantly changing position. Selecting a tasty morsel to ingest can frustrate even the most sophisticated gamefish. That’s one reason why you’ll find predators lurking under a pod of bait. The instant their intended prey strays from the pack, they strike. When you think about it, you can understand that any gamefish searches for a victim that is isolated, disabled or looks different from the others. Feeding is a tradeoff. Success centers on expending as little energy as possible for the food value received. Unsuccessfully chasing prey for long distances keeps a predator lean, hungry, and tends to slow it down. The easiest way to get a strike when you locate a school of baitfish starts with a cast into the middle of the school. It doesn’t matter whether you are fishing an artificial lure or a natural bait. The retrieve should work your offering toward the fringes of the school in basically the same direction in which the school is swimming or at a 45-degree angle to the basic direction. As your bait or lure eases toward the edge of the school, it is easier for a predator to isolate. And, it looks slightly different than the baitfish in the school. Some live bait fishermen squeeze a minnow before casting

92

it or drifting it so that it will be disabled. Clipping a fin or two also impairs swimming motion. The injured fish will have trouble swimming, and that means it will send out vibrations that attract the attention of predators. These frantic movements to obtain equilibrium frequently trigger the strike. Even during the anticipated feast of locating a school of baitfish, certain factors come into play. As water temperatures drop, a predator will not pursue its prey as fast and as far as it would in warmer water. When you are fishing a chum slick and fish are feeding on the chum, it is much more effective to fish an offering without retrieving it. A dead drift works just fine. I’ve seen that produce inshore and offshore including tuna and sailfish. I once had an opportunity to watch scientists monitor the behavior of a school of bluefish in a massive aquarium as they attacked a school of minnows. By chance, I focused on a minnow that did not move, even when attacked by a bluefish four times. Each time, the bluefish broke off the attack because the minnow did not behave as it should. On the fifth pass, the minnow moved and it was eaten faster than you can read this sentence. Finally, if you are trolling and see a school of small fish on the surface, approach the school slowly so as not to scare them. Ease alongside the school and work the fringes or establish a position ahead of the baitfish. If you prefer to cast, keep the boat away from the school and make the cast into the school. As you retrieve your offering and it begins to clear the fringes of the school, you should get a strike.
