By CAM Staff A truck load of kayaks from Confluence Outdoors was overnighted to Texas for use in water rescues.

I

t was an historic hurricane season. With Harvey battering the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast and Irma strafing the length of Florida, damage from high winds and flooding was catastrophic. It is in such trying times that the American spirit shines. Harvey slammed ashore near Rockport, Texas on Aug. 25 and stalled out over southeast Texas, dropping up to 52 inches of rain over the next five days. The flooding was cataclysmic. Major highways turned to rivers and much of the Houston area was under water. Even as floodwaters rose, lines began forming on the sides of the highway. These were volunteers headed into the deluge to launch boats from freeway off-ramps. It looked like the launch line for the world’s largest fishing tournament. It was a proud moment for the fishing community. Anglers from all over the region rushed to the rescue pulling bass boats, jonboats and skiffs. Dubbed the Cajun Navy, this rag-tag bunch of heroes— along with official emergency response—conducted thousands of water recues. And response from the fishing and boating industries was strong as well. The following are few examples of how the fishing industry stepped in with a helping hand. Confluence Outdoors leaped into action as the magnitude of the flooding became clear. They overnighted a semi-truck load of Wilderness Systems and Perception kayaks to Houston. The boats, as well as paddles and PFDs provided by Confluence, were used in high-water rescue by Houston authorities. Honda went to work moving needed products like generators and water pumps to affected areas. And while Honda dealers went to work in rescue efforts, Honda Marine went to work making sure those dealers were stocked up to serve their communities with vital equipment. Additionally, Honda pledged $100,000 to the American Red Cross. The pledge will consist of a corporate contribution as well as a dollar-for-dollar matching gift program for Honda associate contributions. Evinrude immediately donated a boat and motor to a volunteer fire department in Lockport, Texas. The second phase of their relief effort was to deploy a wave of engines to area boatbuilders as well as food and clothing. Evinrude also agreed to match dollar-for-dollar donations to the American Red Cross made by employees. Suzuki, through its Texas dealers, donated boats, motors, ATVs and time to the rescue efforts. In addition, Suzuki provided two outboards to rescue efforts for Carolina Skiff boats that were on their way to Ron Hoover Marine, which has multiple locations in the affected area. Orvis recognized an immediate need for rain gear and wading gear. As well as supplying as many as they could, Orvis put the call out for individuals to ship waders, boots and rain jackets to the San Antonio Orvis location for distribution to rescue personnel. Platypus Fishing Line pledged to donate 100 percent of its website profits in September to the Red Cross Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. The storms and damage from this season’s hurricanes were enormous, and so was the outpouring of support. As anglers and boaters, we should be proud of the response from our community.

Fly Fishing GEAR

Simms G3 Guide Stockingfoot Wader

Goat Head Spool Clips

Without sacrificing durability, Simms’ has constructed its most comfortable, best fitting and most breathable wader in the new G3 Guide Stockingfoot Wader. The G3 Guide was awarded Best Fly Fishing Accessory at ICAST 2017. Constructed with 4-layer GORE-TEX Pro Shell fabric in the legs and three-layer in the upper, this wader concentrates durability where it is needed most while providing added breathability. It takes comfort and mobility to a new level. The wader comes equipped with a chest pocket, removable flip-out Tippet Tender , hand-warmer pockets, integrated utility tabs and also features Simms’ patented front and back leg seams, gravel guards, and suspenders with opposing YKK buckles that allow for a waist-high conversion. It is available in models for men and women.

How many times have your clunky old tippet caddies gotten tangled in the bushes or hung up in slack line? Goat Head Spool Clips are an ingenious new way to carry spools of tippets more securely. Their simple and compact design keeps your spools handy yet out of the way at the same time. A single Spool Clip will hold two standard tippet spools and fits securely to most nylon straps. Spool Clips are made in the U.S.A. from 100 percent recycled plastic. They are simple, rugged, compact, versatile and always ready when you need them.

Douglas Argus Reel There is no denying the beauty and simplicity of a clickcheck reel. Without the advantage of a disc drag, the angler is more in touch with the fish and fights are more fun. The Douglas Argus Fly Reel is a fine looking click-check reel that gets you closer to the fish. It is a shared legacy between longtime anglers and the next demanding generation. On one hand, it is a beautiful reel. On the other, there is no undue advantage given to the angler. Reel includes a twilled pouch. It is made in Upstate New York out of machined bar stock 6061 aircraft aluminum with a standard arbor, and reversible click check with rim-positioned adjustment. The rim is laser textured for palming. The reel seat is constructed of marine brass.

Arc 99+ Fly Line

There is a famous quote by Wyatt Earp, “Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything.” In fly fishing, accuracy is everything. The difference between success and failure is often measured in inches. All modern fly rods are powerful, but accuracy is the new frontier in design. Making an 80-foot cast in saltwater is prospecting. Making a forty-foot cast on the nose of a laid-up tarpon is fishing. The H3 brings a fundamental shift from flex profiles to a new frontier in accuracy and purpose-driven design. Helios 3F and 3D each offer uncompromising purpose. 3F is accuracy with finesse, a dry fly angler’s dream. 3D is accuracy with power at distance for pinpoint delivery of larger flies. The difference is taper and stiffness, but the design foundation of accuracy remains constant. The H3 is the pinnacle of purpose, designed to master the moment and meet the demands of accuracy on a spring creek with a 3F or a tarpon flat with a 3D.

www.orvis.com

Designed for today’s faster action fly rods, the ARC 99+ is a half line size heavier and features a more condensed taper than standard true-to-size fly lines. This additional weight and specialized taper design loads fast action rods easier, resulting in longer, more accurate casts. Built around our 6 percent low-stretch Response Core, the ARC 99+ incorporates the latest advancements in fly line design, including transition zones, a super high floating permanent Nano PTFE coating and a low-friction, grooved line profile. We call this ZNG Technology. This makes the ARC 99+ one of the longest casting, highest floating and easiest mending fly lines on the market today. 10

O

ur grandfathers used old-school bamboo fly rods to create some of the greatest fishing stories of all time. That most of these stories took place on famous trout streams still influences what people think about bamboo’s place in fly fishing. Caleb Turner, of Turner Bamboo Fly Rods, has a different take on bamboo rods in the modern world. “Bamboo has a special place in the very heart of fly fishing, from the great western streams to the small streams of the Appalachians, but they don’t come to mind when people are talking the salt flats,” Caleb said. According to the Turners, there’s a misconception that there are no fast action bamboo fly rods, and that only the fastest action rods can be used in saltwater. Most rod makers and bamboo enthusiasts know this isn’t only untrue… it isn’t even the point.

“The feel found in bamboo rods is often confused with action for people picking up a bamboo rod for the first time,” Caleb said. “When they feel the action in the rod, they often over accelerate their forward cast causing them to lose energy in the line.” Caleb’s recommendation is to let the rod do the work, and to concentrate on technique. “It’s easier to feel when the rod is loaded with bamboo, and this really comes more into play for us on the flats than trout streams,” he said. What the Turners do differently than most other bamboo rod makers is cater to saltwater fly fishing. They are located in Mississippi right next to some of the most technical redfish flats on the Gulf Coast. “We design our saltwater fly rods with a fast action for stiff winds and quick-moving redfish that spook way more easily than their Louisiana counterparts,” Caleb said. With water the same color as the redfish, wind, and the need to have eyes of an Osprey, fly fishing the Mississippi Gulf Coast is more like bonefishing. “Bamboo gives us the action we need, the feel we need, and it’s able to load up at short distances but also extend a long cast to extremely wary redfish found around here.” Caleb said. “Tonkin cane grows in a 30-square-kilometer area in the Orient’s Sui River Valley. It is praised as the strongest species of bamboo with the greatest thickness of power fibers. These power fibers are what give bamboo rods what they have more than other material used in crafting fly rods, their touch. Despite what action you desire, bamboo rods offer a certain touch you just can’t get with anything else. If a rod is designed correctly, you can have all the action you need and still have that great feel. The rod lets you know when it’s loaded instead of having to figure out the timing for that individual rod.” In short, bamboo fly rods definitely have their place in modern performing fly rods. Accuracy, touch and presentation are things bamboo rod makers strive for in crafting their rods. If you get a hold of a quality rod, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by all the things it can do. For more information on bamboo fly rods or Turner Bamboo Fly Rods visit www.turnerflyrods.com or email caleb@turnerflyrods.com.

was a dime-bright fish of only 6 or so iK e pounds that still had the power to get j o s, Ic the reel deep into its backing. There is no better way to begin a fishing journey than when it all comes together early on. We knew we would be experiencing yet another trip of a lifetime. With the sun only slightly hitting the horizon and a brief glimpse of darkness for what seems like only minutes, the days are filled with subtle takes of the fly, followed by sips of Brennivin, cast and repeat. We ended the trip in the same fashion as it started. Another sleek salmon peels line and leaps. At the end of the run, Raven dips the net and we release the fish to bid farewell for what is hopefully only another year until we return. With Raven being the pilot, Brian, Kyle and I explored areas that have been experienced by few. Targeting trophy fish in such a landscape with close friends only solidifies the need for one to explore, be bewildered and experience life events that shape you as a person. Iceland will leave your soul fulfilled but still wanting more.

a

C

asting into a pool where fish leap and dragons rise brings emotions that cannot be found in many places. From the etched lava landscape to the clean cold water, Iceland offers anglers a backdrop to a story that will always begin with the statement, “It was the trip of a lifetime.” With three trips in three consecutive years, I can use the all-too cliché fishing phrase, “I am hooked” on Iceland. Page after page can be written about the acrobatic Atlantic salmon, the headstrong pull of a sea-run brown trout, the rocky canyons, waterfalls, and the art of fishing a hitched tube-fly. There is so much that pulls an angler to Icelandic rivers. For the past three years, I have spent the end of July fishing the Laxa i Kjos, a smaller river in southwestern Iceland about an hour from the capital city, Reykjavik. The river allows an angler to experience much of what Icelandic topography has to offer. From the large pools in the coastal beats, where an angler can’t help but stare out toward the Atlantic Ocean, to the meandering turns of the pastoral meadow sections, and deep narrow-cut canyons that carve the hillside until you reach Thorufoss, the impassable falls, home to a famous scene from the popular series “Game of Thrones.” The landscape, at least to me, is secondary to those that accompany you on the journey. On this year’s trip, I was fortunate enough to return to the river with good friends: Brian, who has made the trip with me before; Kyle, a friend who would be experiencing this fabled land for the first time; and our guide Hrafn (Raven), who brings an entire new appreciation to the fly fishing guide world with a persona that is somewhat mythical, just like the waters we were wading in. Arriving in Iceland, most anglers have aspirations of watching a tube fly skate across the surface of crystal waters, witnessing the careful eat of the fly and the line going tight with the initial run of one of the fly world’s most sought after quarry, an Atlantic salmon. We were fortunate enough to be those anglers. The first fish of the trip was caught soon after arrival. It

MAG BAY 33

Howarth, along with his son Barrett, are building on a heritage of superb design and meticulous craftsmanship. Top-quality components, premium interiors and functional features all come standard on a Mag Bay. They are built to last, and can be customized to fit the owner’s needs for fishing or cruising. One look at the specs, however, will tell you she can be rigged out as a serious angling platform with an approximate range of 350 miles. With multiple hull designs, the Mag Bay 33 is available with amenities like wireless windlass, various seating and lighting options, oversized display screens, joystick, Seakeeper gyro, side door, extra large top and much more.

Since 2015, Mag Bay Yachts has been building on what is sure to become a legendary tradition of high quality sportfishing boats. The Mag Bay 33 is a center console that bridges the gap between elegance and function. An initial patented hull designed by Michael Peters Yacht Designs, of Sarasota, Fla., presents gorgeously unique lines that are sure to turn heads. A modern yet classic look is as sleek at the docks as it is slicing through the seas offshore. And built with the heart of a fishing boat, she is as at home serving as a yacht tender as she is in varied seas as a dryriding, nimble-handling tournament fishing machine. That was the idea when the co-founders of Cabo Yachts launched Mag Bay. Cabo’s Mike

onefish & Tarpon Trust’s Sixth International Science Symposium will take place Nov. 10-11 at the Bonaventure Resort and Spa in Weston, Fla. Open to anglers, scientists, conservationists and fishing industry representatives, this global gathering will also kick off BTT’s 20th Anniversary celebration. “This year’s symposium promises to be the largest and most significant in our history,” said BTT President Jim McDuffie. “We have assembled the foremost scientists in the flats world to present their latest research findings on bonefish, tarpon and permit, and explain how newly acquired knowledge will benefit the conservation of our fisheries.” In addition to presentations by leading scientists, the symposium will spotlight angling legends who will share their time-tested techniques for catching the iconic gamefish of the flats. Andy Mill, Chico Fernandez, C.A. Richardson, Steve Huff, and Rick Ruoff will be among the greats on hand to offer instruction on an indoor casting lane. New to this year’s symposium is a Flats Expo, showcasing the products and services of industry leaders, from the latest technical developments in the sport to world-renowned fishing lodges and outfitters. Fly tying and photography clinics, and an Art & Film Festival also highlight the schedule, along with a banquet honoring conservation heroes. Dinner guests will have the chance to compete for auction items, including bucket-list destination trips, fine art, top-of-the-line spin and fly-fishing gear, and a special BTT 20th Anniversary trip to fish and conduct research with BTT-affiliated scientists. As always, the role of science-based approaches to conservation will be the centerpiece of the event, featuring presentations and Q&A about the latest research on bonefish, tarpon, permit— the species, their habitats, and the larger fisheries they support— as well as panel discussions on how science is guiding BTT initiatives in Florida and across the Caribbean Basin. Of special note will be several recently concluded studies that aim to benefit the Florida fishery. “One of the best things about the symposium is that everyone is able to see how the research informs conservation, and how this helps to protect and restore flats fisheries. It really is unique to be able to participate in this process and see it at work, from start to finish,” said Dr. Aaron Adams, BTT Director of Science and Conservation. BTT’s mission statement is “To conserve and restore bonefish, tarpon and permit fisheries and habitats through research, stewardship, education and advocacy.” To obtain a media pass for the event, contact Nick Roberts: nick@bonefishtarpontrust. org. GULFSTREAM YACHTS Gulfstream Yachts is coming up on its 10-year anniversary and turning out some of the best boats it has ever built. With a dedicated focus to safety, Gulfstream designs customizable center consoles as comfortable fishing or cruising as they are unsinkable.

Gulfstream 34CC The 34CC is a hard-core fishing machine with features that make excursions comfortable and enjoyable for anyone. A unique feature of the 34CC is the large bed area inside the center console that is perfect for finding shade or shelter from the storm, and it can air-conditioned. An advanced hull with a delta pad along the rear 12 feet of the running surface and an integrated stepped transom bracket capable of handling twin or triple motors reduces drag. These features help the boat plane almost instantaneously. One, two or three livewells carry as much bait as you need, and an ergonomically designed console accommodates large electronics. Five large insulated fish/storage boxes hold ice for extended periods because of the boat’s foam-filled construction. This boat was designed for the serious tournament angler or the weekend warrior, and it can be tailored to the owner’s preferences. Length 34’0” Airline_Ad_CoastalAngler_8-1-14_Layout 1 8/1/14 1:14 PM Page 1 Beam 9’11”

Draft 28” Fuel 300 Gal. (400 Gal. option) Dry Weight 7,000 Pounds Recommended Power: 600-1050 HP (twins or triples)

Gulfstream 52 In its 52, Gulfstream introduces what is perhaps the most unique center console ever built. It is a hard-core fishing and diving boat offering unsurpassed comfort with an air-conditioned helm and passenger seating area that can serve as a second bedroom. The large cockpit and forward sunpad offer ample outdoor space, and the enclosure can be converted to open-air. Other key elements of the 52’s design are high gunnel walls and generous passageways for easy access to all areas of the boat. Gulfstream collaborated with Setzer Yacht Architects and Michael Peters Yacht Design using their patented Stepped “V” Ventilated Tunnel hull to give this vessel the feature set of a larger yacht. It’s a great standalone boat and the ultimate multipurpose yacht tender with a customizable layout to suit the owner’s needs for fishing or cruising. Dual dampener controls allow for adjustment of the suspension to make the ride harder or softer and dictate how fast the unit rebounds. An air pump provides additional control, allowing the system to be customized based on the weight of the person sitting in the chair. When you’re ready to experience the most comfortable, smoothest riding helm chair available, check out the Game Changer. The Greatest Gift I Ever Got From my Dad By: Capt. Mike Anderson

O

ctober is one of the premier fishing months in the state of Florida, the water and air temps are coming down and the fish are in transition mode to their favorite winter hang outs. Because of the favorable weather and the fish transitioning this is a great month to get our sons, daughters, grandkids, nieces, nephews or even the neighbor kids out on the water to do some fishing. The bait (which can be a little tough to find in the warmer months), seems to be everywhere and we all know that a live well full of live bait can keep some youngsters occupied for hours. The flats have already come alive with giant schools of hungry redfish and speckled trout of all sizes along with ladyfish, bluefish, flounder and jacks. The cooler water temps put fish in the mood to feed and induce a feeding frenzy on the flats and in the back country. Snook will be feeding heavily this month, target the mouths of the rivers, residential

canals and flats adjacent to deep water for best results. They’ll start to stack up in these areas in October. Off the beaches the fall kingfish bite kicks off this month, and with any luck it will last a while. A sharp cool down and they could blow right through, but the last few winters have been so mild we’ve had kingfish almost all winter long. Anchoring up over hard bottom and chumming or slow trolling with live baits are both great options for kings. Anchoring up is better for action as the Spanish mackerel and sharks will come around as well, but if you want a big smoker kingfish trolling is the way to go! Be sure to leader up with a short piece of wire as the toothy kingfish will normally make quick work of a mono or fluorocarbon leader. Don’t forget to use light drag on these fish, the strike is quick and fierce so giving that fish a little room to run before tightening the drag will up your catch rate. Kids love catching kings or any other fish with lots of teeth. Try making it a rewarding October for yourself and introduce a kid to fishing, you never know what might happen! Fishing is one of the greatest gifts my father ever gave to me, so make this the month that you change a life!

hat a lady; what a night! Well Yak fans, I’m writing this as the storm slowly recedes from our state. I hope you’re all well and ready to get back to fishing. I don’t have a lot to share with you as to fishing (with what’s been going on) but I did want to share something that I’ve been asked about for the last few years. What that is is, if there would be any interest in organizing a Nature Coast kayak fishing club--a place to exchange boats and rigging ideas, as well as, fishing spots and, maybe, make some new friends. I’ve had many people ask me if such a thing existed and how they could meet some of the other guys that share their love of the sport; so, I guess this is the way. Now Groucho Marx once said I wouldn’t join a club that would have me as a member! And, I’ve often felt about the same, Come on, I know me and I wouldn’t want me either. LOL. I don’t mind helping to coordinate the starting to share phone numbers and get people hooked up. It could be a lot of fun. So, y’all will have to get back to me and let me know what you think. I’m having to do this month’s article with my phone, so this is a little different. By the time this gets to print, hopefully, we’ll have completed most of the cleanup and are getting back to our normal lives. God bless you all.

Clearwater & Dunedin

Rob “The Kid” Hussey of Barracuda Bob’s crew shows off a couple of nice Red grouper and a big Mangrove snapper caught on recent offshore trips.

I

t seems that every time we get hit or nearly missed by a hurricane the fish go absolutely nuts for a time; this instance has been no different. Fishing has been on fire lately, the cooling waters will fire up the inshore bite as well as bring some offshore species closer to shore. Anglers fishing offshore from Clearwater to Tarpon Springs have been reporting near record catches of grouper, reds and gags, mangrove snapper, amberjack and cobia. On a recent trip at the end of September we couldn’t get a bait to the bottom before getting hit! If you have access to a boat, get out there and bring lots of bait and chum. While red grouper will willingly take frozen squid and sardines, if you want to score big on gag grouper you will need a live well full of live pinfish, grunts, sardines or cigar minnows. If you don’t have access to a boat, get out on one of the area party boats. Check out Hubbard’s Marina in Treasure Island, the Double Eagle out of Clearwater or any of the boats operating out of the sponge docks in Tarpon Springs. Just make sure to bring your own bait, because most if not all of these party boats provide only threadfin herring and/or frozen squid. All of these boats allow you to bring your own live wells with live baits. Inshore, pompano and Spanish mackerel are making their presence known off the beaches of Honeymoon and Caladesi Islands, as well as the bridges of the Dunedin Causeway. Live shrimp are good for both, but Nekid Ball Jigs are slaying the pompano, silver spoons and Gotcha plugs are murdering the macks. It’s a good idea to stake a chum bag out and fish down current in the slick when targeting these fish. Redfish are prowling the shallows along Edgewater Drive between Dunedin and Clearwater, as well as mangrove shorelines and oyster bars behind Honeymoon and Caladesi Islands. Big live shrimp or half a fresh pinfish soaked on the bottom will score plenty of

fish, but many of our customers have reported great catches on jigs with big Gulp tails attached. Speckled trout are everywhere on the grass flats north and south of the Dunedin Causeway, and shore anglers are catching plenty wading the flats on the north side. Your best bet for snagging the old yellow mouths is a big live shrimp, or a Gulp shrimp pinned under a Back-Bay Thunder popping cork. MirrOlure MirrOdine’s in a variety of colors are also scoring their share of fish. Just remember, if you start catching nothing but smaller fish it’s time to move, big trout eat little trout so the little ones tend to hang by themselves. For the latest word on fishing hotspots and the biggest, friskiest live shrimp around make sure to stop into Barracuda Bob’s. We also offer a wide variety of frozen and artificial baits that are sure fish stoppers. Our friendly and knowledgeable crew is happy to help you rig up right for a productive day of fishing! Get your fish on at Barracuda Bob’s! See y’all out there! Barracuda Bob’s Island Surf & Sports is located at 240 Causeway Blvd. Dunedin, FL 34698. We are the last building on the right before crossing the Causeway to Honeymoon Island. Barracuda Bob’s offers the best in bait and tackle, beach and water toys, kayak and paddle board rentals and much more! Think Outside the Box

W

ith the constant changes in weather and water temperatures, sometimes I try to think out of the box. What I mean by this is changing the tactics I use when fishing. Try using a different lure or different color lure; try a different presentation or even fishing a different area that you normally don’t fish. Doing this can open up whole new ways of fishing that you’ve never experienced before. Fishing doesn’t always have to be serious, go have some fun. The grouper bite in the 25 – 35 foot depths has been getting better by the day on smaller

structures such as ledges. As the water stays calm, I’ve found that the fish start to move, so target bottom spots in between the larger areas. Another key is to cut up threadfins and chum before dropping down your bait. Always anchor up current to allow your chum to drift onto the area your fishing. On these trips red and gag grouper and lots of grunts are being caught. Always use strong equipment with a 7/0 circle hook, four to six ounces of weight and either cut bait or live bait. There is also a lot of cobia showing up. Many times when I’m on a charter someone will think they see a shark and it will actually be a big cobia. Cobia are curious, very hard fighters and will usually hit anything put in front of them, this makes them one of my favorite targets. If they don’t, try moving the bait or lure a little faster or try a different lure. Once hooked take some time to wear the fish out, you don’t want to bring a green cobia into the boat, the fish can cause a lot of damage to you and your boat. The regulation for cobia is 33 inches to the fork and one per day. The picture is Adam

We Buy Boats We Sell Boats Trades Accepted

with a 54 inch cobia caught fishing with Capt. Mike Senker of On Another Plane Charters. Inshore fishing is also kicking into gear, the redfish and trout are starting to move onto the shallow flats. Target them anywhere you can find structure and even better, structure with bait on it. In our area structure can be rocks or grass flats. Try to read the water for any movement ripples, mullet jumping or bait fish making it rain on the surface. Start with search baits like a spoon, jerkbait, or subsurface bait. I’ve also had good luck with cut baits like mullet, ladyfish or pinfish. With these baits I like to use a strike indicator and about a 4/0 circle hook. With this set up just relax and wait for the fish to come to you. I’m always looking for reports and pictures. You can email me or stop by my website and become a “FISHHEAD”. Get out there on the water and make some memories with friends and family! Capt. Tampa Bay Fishing Report

W

ith fall just around the corner we may get some cooler weather. Finally the water should cool down and the fish will get a little more excited about being fish. As we continue into the fall the bite should keep getting stronger. You can expect good catches using live bait and artificial lures all over the Tampa Bay area. If you’re interested in some exciting early morning action, tie on a MirrOLure16MR MirrOMullet surface walker or Top Dog Jr. and walk the dog across a calm morning grass flat. The anticipation of the next explosive snook strike or the water pushing swirl of a stalking redfish will electrify even the most seasoned angler. A topwater strike on your favorite lure is so exhilarating it’ll almost stop your heart. Fishing artificial lures is close to my heart, there is something magical about tricking a fish into striking something that looks like natural food or is completely alien looking. Over the years, I’ve used everything imaginable to catch fish. Live baits, artificial lures, and even plastic straws; I’ve even used a

By: Woody Gore

strip of old white tee shirt to catch spotted sea trout. I’ve come to the conclusion that if it has action or looks wounded; something’s going to try to eat it. Try your hand at something man-made on your next fishing trip, you’ll be surprised at how many fish you’ll catch and how much fun you’ll have doing it. There are plenty of redfish and snook hanging around the grass flats and mangrove shorelines. You can also expect schooling reds to keep moving around the bay. It’s also the time of the year when some of the biggest reds show up. You never know if you’re going to a catch one in the slot or one of the giants over 30 inches. Most snook caught average in the 22 to 30 inch range, however for those who like the night life associated with snook fishing this is great time. They’re hanging under residential docks watching the light line for a quick meal. Use a shallow diving artificial lure, greenback or free-line a jumbo shrimp. Also, make sure to use Seaguar 30-40 pound leader, so you don’t get cut off on the pilings. As for the others, expect some good sized mangrove snapper at the bridges, rock piles, and artificial reefs with some topping out

around three pounds. Cobia should pop up as usual around markers and buoys, mackerel, bluefish, jacks and ladyfish will be feeding on bait schools everywhere as well. When taking kids fishing, never pass up a chance at ladyfish and jacks because they can make or break a trip. Most children aren’t interested in fishing, however they are interested in catching and they don’t care what they catch. When you take kids fishing make sure it’s always about them catching fish. Give Me a Call & Let’s Go Fishing” – 813-4773814 Captain Woody Gore is the area’s top fishing guide. ven though Hurricane Irma took her toll on Polk County in September, she didn’t hurt our fishing environment, in fact, she helped it!! The fish love the running water. Water temperatures have dropped slightly and October should offer some prime fishing adventures. We’re being told that many good size Specs are showing up

early this year mixed in with a lot of Shell Crackers. Our best reporting lakes at this time are Lakes Haines and Rochelle here in Lake Alfred. Those of you who don’t have a boat should not let that stop you from having an enjoyable time fishing. Lake Alfred has (7) nice fishing piers, many of which have recently been renovated. There are also other piers in our surrounding areas to explore. Of course, we recommend Lake Alfred!! South Winter Haven Chain is reporting an abundance of 3-5 lb Bass, as shown in the photo of Daniel Smith and Shea Arnold who took Big Bass and 1st Place at one of our recent weekly tournaments. Not so big, but still good fishing. We should see an increase in size this month. For best results at this time, we recommend working a Booyah Frog with lots of action. Another winner is the Bass Assassin Boss Shiner in assorted colors. Swim it with a weighted hook. We’re expecting a very favorable season for Speckled Perch thanks to the hurricane and

all the rain it brought. There is lots of food in the water. Get out there and bring in a few of those Big Specs and Big Bass. Let’s get some great photos while you’re at it!! Our 19th season of Ron’s Tackle Box Weekly Bass Tournaments is now in full swing!! Weekly registration is $30.00 per boat (1 or 2 man) and the tournaments run from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM each Thursday through the end of October. Prizes are awarded for BIG BASS and 1st, 2nd, 3rd place categories. The location each week is not revealed until Thursday mornings and is announced in Andy Kupper’s column in “The Ledger”, our Web Site, “Like & Follow” us on FB, or you can call Ron at (863) 956-4990. E.G. Simmons Park

E

.G. Simmons Park is located in Ruskin FL, 18 miles South of Tampa. The park is named after Ellsworth G. Simmons, a native of Ruskin. Ellsworth was a civic leader on the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners. He was instrumental in the construction of the Tampa International Airport and the building of interstates I-4 and I-75, just to name a few of his accomplishments. His wife Mabel was an ornamental horticulturist and was once the largest flower producer in Florida. Simmons Park is a 458 acre

“angler’s paradise”. Two Hundred acres of the park are a mangrove laden bird sanctuary. Upon entering the park, there are small pavilions on one side of the road and alcoves that lead to a large canal on the other side. These alcoves are perfect for the land based angler, just setup your lawn chair and start fishing. They also act as great “put-ins” for kayaking anglers. For the wading angler, there are a multitude of access areas throughout the park. Simmons is on Tampa Bay and trout, snook, snapper, sheepshead, and redfish can all be found in these

waters. Bait and tackle shops can be found on U.S. Highway 41 in Apollo beach and Ruskin. The park has a very nice, reasonably priced, campground. Throughout the campground are catwalks that lead to fishing platforms tucked into the mangroves, some with cleaning stations. There are large pavilions scattered throughout the park to accommodate parties. A boat ramp with plenty of parking and a dedicated swimming area make this one of the nicest parks in Hillsborough County.

The admission to this regional park is $2 per carload. If you end up staying all day, shower up and go to an “old school” drive in movie theater directly across from the entrance of the park. The next time you are looking for something fun for the whole family, make sure you check out E. G. Simmons Park. Paul Presson, outdoor writer and published cartoonist. He has fished the coastlines of Tampa Bay for 28 years, land based, wade, kayak and by flats boat. If he is not writing, he is out on the water!

Skinny Water Report

F

all is here, despite the high 80’s-low 90’s temperatures; T-shirts, sandals and shorts get stored and replaced with waders, boots and jackets soon. Fall also means our flats, bays and beaches begin to come back to life. Fish of all species occupy these areas in search of bait returning from offshore. As the water temp cools down the bite will improve. Late season pelagics are making a showing again and will be gone by the end of the month. Big black drum will be pushing their way up and down Tampa Bay in huge numbers. Start looking for the first signs of heavy boat traffic

near the bridge pylons to join in on the rodeo. This is an awesome ritual that drives anglers from all over and gives them an opportunity to sight cast these over-sized beasts. Tarpon will still show until the end of the month as they make a pit stop in Tampa Bay during their migration towards the Caribbean. If you plan on targeting Silver Kings, please take part in the Tarpon DNA program. Kits are available at major tackle shops, FWC, and Mote Marine Laboratory. The program helps researchers track the tarpon population and behavioral patterns.

By: Derick Burgos

Look for snook to be outside river and creek mouths pushing up toward the mangrove shorelines and in the passes as well as some slackers are still lingering on the beach. I predict much bigger fish this season so please practice safe handling. Redfish will be spread out in the bay laying in potholes, grass edges, oyster bars and points. Look for shallow, muddy areas and don’t forget the oyster bars. Keep your eyes peeled for tailers as the tide recedes and work them with a stealthy approach. Finding trout will be a piece of cake. Schoolies will be just about everywhere with bigger fish nearby. Look for them in shallow potholes in the early morning

hours, then go deeper as the sun comes up. Among these species you will also begin to encounter tons of juvenile sharks, ladyfish, permit, pompano, tripletail and much more. October is definitely a great month but it’s only the beginning of the season. Be safe and take a kid fishing! South Shore Tampa Bay Trick or Treat! By: Capt. Joel Brandenburg

Oct. 13-15 2017

F

ishing is similar in concept as Halloween, the more casts you make (doors you knock on) and the better your presentation the more chance you’ll have of catching more fish (getting candy). In October the redfish start gathering together in large schools feeding on the grass flats. Whether you are using live bait or artificials you must make accurate casts in order to catch these reds. Like Halloween your approach can be spooky, so be quiet. I push my boat over the flats until we reach the school of reds. Once the boat is in place I anchor electronically using duel Power Poles. When approaching the school, try to go to where the reds will be rather than where the reds are. Predict the red’s direction by noticing the uneasy water and which way it’s going. I see so many anglers head right to where the school is rather than where the school is going to be and they end up playing cat and mouse with the school. My nickname for the month of October is Red October, because we have more redfish action in October than any other month of the year. Below are some October tricks and treats for these reds. When approaching the school of reds keep the wind at your back. You can cast twice as far and keep your distance from the spooky reds. When choosing what treat to use for schooling reds, it’s important to match the hatch.

Reds are some of the spookiest fish around, noise makes them spook quicker than anything. We express to our anglers as we’re approaching the school that they can’t talk as loudly as they’d like, slam any lids or hatches or even step/jump down from the tower or bow hard. Once you Power Pole down and have the school in casting range, take your bait bat and chum. If seagulls or pelicans are not in the area, cripple your bait in the bat by twisting them thus breaking their backs. By crippling the bait first it slows the bait down and allows the reds to get into more of a feeding frenzy. If you do have birds flocking over or around the school, don’t cripple your chum because you don’t want baits gimping on the top of the water causing birds to dive down on the school. With the right bait, stealthy approach and determination, we know you’ll catch many fish. Have a happy Red October! I Feel Like a King! By: Capt. Anthony Corcella

I

n this article I will be covering king fishing in Tampa Bay. There a few tactics on how to catch these fish, the first one is trolling blue runners or ladyfish, live sardines with a color skirt can also work. Drift fishing is another method that will produce fish. The area I like to fish for these guys is around the skyway and the G-cut. The G-cut seems to produce big fish. As far as the rod and reel setup, I use a heavy spinning setup; 20 pound mono will do the trick. If you’re fishing for kings, don’t forget to pick up some stinger rigs form Mitches Bait & Tackle to prevent cutoffs. We caught one early season fish this year, the client caught it on a live threadfin herring on a flat line over a reef in the bay. Obviously bait is important no matter what species that you are targeting. Because of this reason, I want to talk about what I feel is the best bait net that money can. If you’re looking for the best net on the market

you need to check out Barracuda Cast Nets. Once you throw it you will get rid of all your other nets, pancakes every time! The net comes with a lifetime guarantee and comes with a full size bucket. I would recommend this net to anyone. You can buy them at www. barracudatackle.com. What makes our charter service unique is that we cater to disabled veterans and wheel chair bound clients! Our boat is able to accommodate wheelchairs and is ADA compliant. IF YOU’RE A DISABLED VETERAN YOUR TRIP IS FREE!!! This is our way we give back to our veterans. Fishing Federal Waters

I

met with Bradley McWille of the United States Army and Leo Weber of the United States Air Force at zero dark thirty this morning. We picked up necessary supplies and I was briefed on the plans for the day. I was escorted onto MacDill Air Force Base and the endeavor was about to begin. As in any military operation, nothing was going to be easy. Our first obstacle was a canal too deep to wade, so we had to swim across it with our equipment in tow. The trek was arduous, but we finally reached our predetermined destination. The goal was an amphibious attack on our targets. The rules of engagement were simple, catch as many fish as possible.

After the 911 attack, the water that surrounds the base has been placed off limits to civilian personnel. This became very apparent observing the pristine environment. Healthy sea grass with no evidence of damage by boaters. The first thing I noticed was tarpon rolling in every direction. When we reached the mouth of a large canal we observed thousands of mullet, as far as the eye could see. Bradley has fished these waters for years and knows the honey holes. Leo is fairly new to saltwater fishing, but he was throwing jigs with the best of them. It didn’t take long for Bradley to start the show, throwing top-water plugs, he was catching snook after snook. Leo joined in the fun and began catching snook

By: Paul Presson

throwing soft plastics. I, on the other hand was having my butt handed to me. Leo had to peel off early to report to his commander (the wife), He had performed his mission admirably, catching two nice snook. I finally started to produce throwing topwater. I landed two snook and this was a first, I had caught trout and reds on top-water lures, but never snook. A newcomer joined Bradley, for over two hours they were like conjoined twins. Bradley named his new friend “Prop Scarred Pete” a very large, lumbering manatee. I would like to think Pete gave Bradley good luck or maybe it was home field advantage, but that was not the case.

Bradley is a darn good angler and ended up catching eight snook. I managed to pull in a nice trout and fished frantically for redfish to complete my slam so I would at least have some bragging rights......that was not to be. We ended up seeing dolphin, manatee, osprey, and a beautiful spoonbill roseate. I could not have had a better time nor been with nicer people. I can’t wait to go on another “mission” with these guys! Paul Presson, outdoor writer and published cartoonist. He has fished the coastlines of Tampa Bay for 28 years, land based, wade, kayak and by flats boat. If he is not writing, he is out on the water!

In The Wake

I

ran into an old friend down at the Cove Inn Coffee Shoppe last month, I’ve known this guy for a really long time! That place is one of the few in town that hasn’t changed a lick in 50 years. I had other business that day, so we didn’t chat too long. But the visit sure brought back a lot of memories. I thought about fishing back in the day with the neighborhood kids, and then I thought about fishing today. When I get ready for a trip on the water these days, it starts with a visit to myfwc.com to see what’s legal to catch and keep this month. You know – what’s in season, bag limits, slot sizes, and measure by fork or by tail? Little details that can get your boat confiscated if you don’t know them. The little plastic placards don’t work anymore, because it seems that every time the commissioners meet, regulations change. It’s best just to go to the web, and get the latest info.

But I digress…. What are we going fishing for? How many people are coming? Are we inshore or offshore? Artificial lures or live bait? Are we bottom fishing? Trolling the new reefs? Do I need a bait bucket, a cast net, or a fresh supply of sabikis? I need circle hooks, bait rods, beach rods, boat rods, trolling rods and “big ugly” for when the goliath grouper come around. It seems like it’s three or four trips from the truck to the boat at each end of the trip! The memories triggered by running into Mo at the Coffee Shoppe included jumping on my bike as a kid and riding down to the beach at sun-up with nothing more than my Hurricane spinning rod and a box of snitch hooks in the pocket of my cut-off blue jeans. I could tell what the water was going to be like by the way the wind felt on my face as I headed west on my old Schwinn Stingray with the Troxell seat. I always

By: Capt. Jim Kalvin

hoped for one of those glassy days where the sky and the water were indistinguishable on the horizon. Clouds of bait lined the beaches and the sand would be deserted. You walked out into the water about shin deep as the sun was clearing the horizon and lobbed the bare snitch hook out into a bait cloud. The clear water was warm on your skin and the bait would scatter around where the hook landed. You waited until the hole around your line closed back up again and gave a swift tug. In those days, about 90 percent of the time you had a struggling shiner on the hook. After you brought it in and re-casted it into the bait ball you would just wait and eventually you would get slammed. Snook, a big jack, a trout, the possibilities were endless! Most days, we could catch more Spanish mackerel than we could carry back home. No special rigs, no fancy lures, no tackle bag to lug up the

beach. Times sure have changed, I tell those old stories to kids these days and they look at me the way I used to look at my elders talking about walking to and from school, up-hill both ways, in the snow - all year long! As “beach rats”, we came up during a special time – no malls, no video games, very few condos on the beach. We had little league, the beach and the woods, and that’s all we needed. I know there will be a few folks reading this article who’ll remember a day or two themselves, standing in the warm surf, casting a snitch-hook out into the gulf at sunrise – in a much simpler time. ave you ever tournament fished? If you have then you know what the “King of the Beach” is and if you haven’t and always wanted to, it is the best tournament in town. There are 3 main reasons • LEVEL PLAYING FIELD: The Old Salts have made the competition one of the most fair to ALL levels of fisherman. They implement a 30 mile boundary to ensure any size boat can compete. They also offer extra places to single engine vessels. There are also no intimidating check outs or shotgun starts. • OVER 50 PLACES TO WIN: The tournament has 5 divisions: Overall, Single Engine, Spanish Mackerel, Ladies and Youth. Each division has cash and/or prizes with approximately $200,000 up for grabs. • LOW ENTRY FEES: You can enter the tournament for as little as $195 which is almost half the cost of most Kingfish tournaments. So the risk is smaller and at the same time the rewards are bigger. 1st place overall wins $50,000 guaranteed. The event is so much more than just fishing. It is a 3 day festival with all types of marine and art vendors,

a food festival with local flavor, Free Concert Friday night featuring Tim Montana, boat displays and a kids zone. “Combining a community food festival and concert into our tournament seamed natural to us. Fishing is part of our community, so we welcome all to join us” says Old Salt President Tom Verdensky. The event will be held at the Madeira Beach Recreation Complex at 200 Rex Place, Madeira Beach. We have ample FREE parking with a FREE Ferry shuttle to the event, with a special thanks to Hubbard’s Marina and their new water taxi. The Old Salt Fishing Foundation hosts this semi-annual event to benefit several local charities – The Children’s Dream Fund, www.childrensdreamfund. org; P.A.R.C., www.parc-fl.org This year we are also raising money for the Fisherman Rebuilding the Keys Fund with hurricane Irma taking its toll on one of our favorite fishing meccas. Live Action

S

nook season is in full swing and many anglers have been targeting them in hopes of landing a fish within the slot. Many snook have been caught on recent trips within keeping size, and even a few oversized fish have been brought to the boat for a great picture. Snook are on the top of my list of fish I enjoy eating, they have a flaky white meat and a pleasant mild taste that many fish eating connoisseurs favor. Remember, the slot measurement to keep snook is 28 to 32 inches total length. As we part ways with the dominantly hot portion of the year these larger slot sized

fish are starting to make their seasonal transition from the passes and beaches to the grass flats and river mouths. Many snook anglers know that water temperature can have an impact on the bite. If it’s too hot or too cold the fish won’t feed as much. The desired water temperature for snook fishing is around the mid 70’s. Snook season in October is a prime time to take advantage of water temperatures. Bait is becoming easier to find as well now that the water temperatures are all around more favorable. The bait to use right now are scaled sardines. Focus on locating these baitfish at the channel markers and shallow to deep transition areas nearest boat channels. I use a 10 foot Barracuda Pro cast net to gather my bait at the previously mentioned areas. I can usually catch enough bait for a trip in one or two casts because of the ease of

opening in the net design. After you find and catch your baits, freeline a few in target areas and wait for a hit. If you sit in one location for more than 30 minutes move and repeat. The tripletail bite has been very good lately around deep water markers and buoys. With crab season ahead of us keep an eye out for old three tails hanging around crab trap buoys as they make for great tripletail hideouts. Capt. Greg Leonard of All Anglers Inshore Fishing Charters has had great success recently targeting Tripletail on the markers adjacent to boat channels in St. Pete and Tierra Verde. Capt. Leonard uses a variety of shrimp shaped jigs as well as live shrimp to catch these masters of deception. Capt. Greg Leonard can be reached at 813-494-2324. Large schools of redfish have shown up around the flats spanning from the Howard Frankland Bridge South to Fort De Soto on the Pinellas side of the bay. Free-lined scaled sardines and any type of cut bait will work to catch these fish. Captain Christopher Taylor Florida Reels Fishing Charters www.floridareelsfishingcharters.com (813) 220-6135

Flatties of Tampa Bay

T

ampa Bay offers a smorgasbord of species, but one species often overlooked is flounder. Flounder can be found around sandy or muddy bottoms along the edge of grass beds and channels, but most are caught by accident. They are strong fighters on light tackle and are rated as one of the best in food value. Although flounder can be caught all year long, I find the fall to be prime time. October, November and December are my favorite months to catch them. Flounder are bottom feeders, in order to increase your chances at the big ones I recommend several techniques.

Try drifting along the outer edges of grass beds or alongside of channels with structure or rubble. A quarter ounce jighead with live bait works well. This method works best in the two to six foot depths. Bounce the jig along the bottom and the drift of the boat will do the rest. In deeper water (6-10 feet), I recommend a three eighths ounce jighead. If you’re fishing artificials, a three eighths of an ounce jighead with a three inch paddle tail or a DOA shrimp works. Anchor on the outer edges of grass beds or deep water channels and cast up current. The secret is to bounce the jig along the bottom with a slow retrieve. Flounder will only travel short distances for food, so the presentation must be close. Dock fishing is another good way to catch them, a quarter ounce sinker setup as a Texas rig with a glow bead between the hook and the sinker is the ticket. It’s my belief that the glow bead just draws attention in the dark bottom and turns the flounder on to strike. Seawalls that have a quick drop into a sandy bottom with grass patches are also good spots. Flounder tend to sit and wait for their prey, so try fishing bridges where the tide is moving. Here I use a three eighths of an ounce sinker setup with a glow bead, cast along the edges of the shoreline and work the shrimp towards the drop.

My favorite rod is a seven foot TFO medium light action in the 10 to 17-pound test range and a medium size spinning reel like the Quantum Smoke 30. Fall months usually mean windy days so I prefer using Fins Windtamer 15-pound test braided line. It’s one of the best lines I have found in keeping wind knots to a minimum. Some locations that I like to target these fish at are the St. Pete side of Gandy Bridge just outside the rocks, the edges of the rocks along the St. Pete Airport, Tierra Ceia Bay and Bird Key to name a few. Flounder will offer a change of pace and taste, so don’t overlook the doormats of Tampa Bay. Please e-mail any questions concerning fishing or tackle and I will be glad to respond. Flats to Nearshore Report By: Capt. Gary Burch

T

he temperature of inshore waters in St. Joseph’s Sound and Clearwater Bay are cooling down. The days are shorter and there’s a lot less sunlight each day. In October, you can get a downright nasty cold front that drastically drops the temps way below normal and shuts down the fishing for a few days. Hopefully we maintain some type of consistency. Look for our local flats fish to start shifting into their fall patterns. The magic temperature is just below 80. Redfish will show up in bigger numbers on the usual grass flats all around the bay. On all of my trips this month, I will be in constant look out for schooling redfish. Search flats with grass, sand holes and scattered oyster beds along a mangrove shoreline. Stealth is the way to go when approaching a redfish school. The best baits for reds in this scenario are sardines, small pinfish and even fresh cut bait works great. If you find schools of redfish, they should remain in that general location of the bay through November. Trout fishing on the flats will improve in October and get much better next month as the water temp cools further. Trout move into the bays in the fall and winter and supply plenty of action. Search areas with grassy bottoms in the three to four foot depths. You may have to cover a lot of ground to find them, but when you do there will be a lot of fish in the school. They can’t resist a well-placed artificial with noise and flash. Get some live shrimp and drift the grass flats on the north side of Dunedin causeway, there should be some trout out there. Snook are on the move as well, as the water temperatures cool expect these fish to move away from the beaches and passes to fall or pre

winter locations. Depending on how cold the weather gets, some snook can be found just inside the passes. Also explore the spoil islands in the bay and investigate docks and cuts leading into the backwaters. Live white bait may be your ticket to catching the line-siders. Mackerel and kingfish will be on the menu later in October when the water temperature drops below 75 degrees. Lots of fish will be caught just off the beaches of Sand Key, Johns Pass, St. Pete Beach and along the shipping channels of Tampa Bay. Slow troll blue runners, ladyfish, mackerel or large threadfins in these areas. There are some 40 and 50 pound fish caught every year in these locations. Fall fishing can be the most exciting time to be out on the water. You can pick your species to target and most of the time you will find and catch them. It doesn’t matter if you are on a boat or at the causeway, there will be fish to catch. Just remember the best part; there are no 95 degree temperatures to worry about! Enjoy! Capt. Gary Burch owns and operates All Catch Charters and specializes in live baits and artificials. He guides inshore, flats and backcountry from Clearwater to Tarpon Springs. To reach Capt. Gary for a charter, please call 727 458-6335 or visit his website: www.allcatchcharters.com

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT ICEMULE PRO XL Seeing the need for a portable cooler that is actually a real cooler and holds real ice, ICEMULE founder James Collie set out on a mission to change the way the world views coolers. The result is the world’s coldest, most portable and toughest hands-free soft cooler. It can be worn like a backpack. The ICEMULE Pro XL is a high-capacity 33-liter cooler that keeps ice better than many hard coolers. They retain solid ice for more than 24 hours, and the Pro XL is large enough to hold 24 cans and ice. That’s a lot of space to carry provisions for your next adventure comfortably on your back. ICEMULEs are built of the highest-quality materials and fasteners. Their proprietary MuleSkin fabrics are extra tough to stand up to the most punishing conditions. There are no seams; welded construction ensures the Pro XL is completely waterproof. And the cooler’s roll-top, which works like a dry bag, is air-tight and allows easy access without jamming zippers. With padded backpack straps, ventilated back pads and a sternum strap, weight distribution is optimized to comfortably carry a heavy load. Whether it’s a hike into the backcountry or a long walk down to the beach, you’ll be glad your cooler is an ICEMULE.

h, the fall. It brings us colorful foliage, football, fresh apple cider and big ornery brown trout. When the mercury begins to take the plunge and daylight starts to dwindle, big mature brown trout start their yearly routine of procreation. What follows is a feeding binge of mature trout. Fish that have been uncatchable all summer throw caution to the wind. This is not the time for small flies and delicate presentations. Big gaudy nymphs and large streamers are the name of the game in fall. Large stonefly patterns like Girdle Bugs and Pat’s Rubber Legs are good choices as are the usual generic mayfly patterns like Hare’s Ears and Pheasant Tails, just opt for

a size 8 instead of an 18. My personal favorite fall flies are streamers, and something with a little bit of color, too. For some reason big fall browns seem to like streamers with a bit of orange in them. Sculpin patterns can be especially deadly this time of year. Whether it be the giant protein-packed snack a big sculpin delivers or a triggered attack response implanted in trout to protect their roe, it should be used to your advantage. It is also the time for stealth. With overly large trout sometimes holding in ridiculously shallow water, being sneaky pays huge dividends. Wear drab colored shirts at the very least. Even a camouflage jacket is not too far fetched. I normally work a river upstream, but this is not the case when fishing fall streamers. I’ll work it down. I can be much quieter and more stealthy when walking with the current as opposed to against it. If possible, stay on the bank as much as you can. Most fish will hit on the swing, so the area you expect the take to come will be downstream of your location. If you were working upstream, you could have already spooked a fish. Cast across, swing it down, take a few sneaky steps down stream, think about it, cast across, swing it down. Walking the river is crucial. Don’t just haphazardly crash through the water on your way to a good run. Hunt the river this time of year. Take a few steps and watch. This is where a good pair of polarized glasses are worth their weight in gold. Look over the entire stream, not just the typical haunts. You may be pleasantly surprised and amazed by what you’ll see. Trout will still be positioned in good usual runs too, but much more apt to attack your offering. Instead of heading to the deer stand or taking up a spot on the couch to watch the big game, get out on the stream. Just maybe, a kyped-up, big old slab of spotted butter will end up in your net. he dry brisk November morning air is a welcome change to Florida’s Forgotten Coast residents, but not just for the obvious reasons. The summer heat has lifted, and the mighty red drum is hungry and looking to fill her belly with whatever kind of crustacean or finny fish she can get close to. As you move stealthily along the marsh, you search for the signs: a wake along the grass line or a tail piercing the water’s surface. Either one is worthy of a cast and, if presented properly,

can result in the silence of the morning stalk being broken by the crash of a topwater plug being engulfed, the scream of a reel’s drag and some enthusiastic expletives. Stalking the skinnies of the marsh can be a challenging experience. Reds spook easily, so stealth is a must, as are accurate and purposeful casts; all this is what makes the hunt so rewarding. The waters of Franklin County are teeming with reds, making the chance of fooling, fighting and releasing a mighty red an extremely attainable and rewarding experience. If you come to this area to chase reds, any shallow-drafting boat will put you in a position for success, but some are better suited than others. Ideally, the ability to pole, paddle or scull your vessel will give you the advantage of stealth, but a trolling motor and a well-planned use of tides and wind also works well on the flats. Franklin County TDC is giving away a free red fishing excursion this month, so enter for your chance to win and make your redfish dream a reality. The reds and so many other fish are abundant in some of the most beautiful places on earth, right here. Don’t let another fall go by without experiencing this amazing time of year along Florida’s Forgotten Coast. For more details or to sign up, go to: www. floridasforgottencoast.com. EXPERT ADVICE

See the Fish

DAVID MANEY, FOWLER’S SUNGLASSES

W

alking a shallow trout stream, casting to structure in lakes or making sure you’re going after the biggest fish in an offshore school you need functional high performance UV sunglasses to see beneath the water. One pair may not fit the function for each of these varied UV demands. Shallow streams with bright sunlight require amber for most people. Deeper murky waters and overcast conditions need grey or amber. For offshore with bright sun and the need to see deeper into the blue waters, your best bet is blue mirror or grey. As an avid angler and someone who’s been involved in the sunglasses industry for over 20 years, my advice is to always try to match the sunglasses to the condition. This requires keeping several different UV’s with you. Most sunglass cases come with clip-on attachments so keeping a few pair of sunglasses with you has never been easier. As the conditions change during your day, you’ll be prepared to match your UV formula with the change. Once you’ve prepared yourself for these UV changes you’ll be on top of your angling game no matter what.

For the best overall coverage in any condition I recommend one pair of blue mirror/grey and one pair of green mirror/ amber. This simple modification in your sight fishing tactics will make a huge difference in your angling success. Tight Lines, David Maney Fowler’s Pharmacy 888-340-9021 www.FowlersSunglasses.com

FLY FISHING

D

uring the fall and winter, there is not a better saltwater game fish to target with a fly rod than redfish. Plentiful throughout the Gulf States, the redfish provides a great fly fishing opportunity for anglers of all skill levels who want to sight fish in shallow clear water. I’ve always considered the redfish to be the perfect saltwater game fish. It offers the angler a perfect venue to hone his or her sightfishing skills. Why? Because of two important factors: accessibility and plentiful fishing opportunity. From a logistical standpoint, most anglers can book a flight for great redfish destinations from most major cities in the U.S. Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and the panhandle of Florida are prime winter redfish spots. Each of these locations has experienced fly fishing guides who are knowledgeable and professional. Access to the marsh flats, where the redfish live in the winter, is quite easy and the number of redfish you see in a day can be mind blowing! Three factors for successful sight fishing to Redfish: 1) Can you see the fish? Visibility is the most important factor when sight fishing in shallow water. It’s great when you have a bluebird day and you’re seeing the fish from 100 yards away. However, Mother Nature usually has her own ideas on conditions. So, being able to identify fish even in tough lighting is important. Look for odd shapes in the water, V shaped wakes or even a subtle dimple that breaks the water’s surface. These are all signs of redfish feeding in an area. TIP: Use yellow polarized lenses. These will provide better contrast under tough lighting conditions. 2. Can I make a short cast? Many redfish are hooked 20 feet or less from the boat. Believe

me, the short cast is the toughest cast to make when sight fishing to redfish. Why? Because we are so focused on perfecting the 60-foot cast and neglect the importance of dropping a cast less than 20 feet from the boat. The 60foot cast is important, but it rarely comes into play when sight fishing to redfish. Work on your short cast as well. TIP: Work on a flip cast. Only cast the head of your fly line at targets on your left and right sides at 10 to 20 feet max. 3) Where should I place the fly? Redfish can see very well. I’ve seen them chase a fly from 20 feet way. However, I find placing a fly a couple feet in front of their noses works best. Once you’ve made the cast, let the fly settle to the bottom. As the redfish moves toward the fly, begin to move the fly with short strips. Once the redfish sees the fly, it will swim over and inhale it. At this point all you have to do is keep the rod tip on the water and strip strike to set the hook. TIP: On an open lawn, place small Frisbees at 5, 10, 20 and 30 feet from your casting position. Work on placing the fly in the center of each Frisbee without a false cast.

n May, Minnesota angler Jake Robinson tied his own catch-and-release state record with a 49-inch flathead catfish from the Minnesota River. Mark Mosby, of St. Anthony, Minn., had apparently seen enough of that mess. In August, he went out on the St. Croix River and hauled in a massive flathead that measured 52 ½ inches in length and 32 inches in girth. Minnesota DNR recently announced that it is the new state record for the catch-and-release category. Actually, Mosby describes himself as an occasional angler.
