ast and stable, with a needle nose that reminded people of a mosquito buzzing over southern waters, the world’s first bass boat was the 1948 brainchild of Shreveport, Louisiana’s Holmes Thurmond. That first Skeeter boat, made of molded marine plywood, caught on quickly with local anglers. It launched the brand

that today, 70 years later, is still renowned for building innovative boats designed specifically for the needs of recreational anglers. Cary Crutchfield, co-publisher of Coastal Angler Magazine’s North Central Florida edition, owns one of those early Skeeter boats. When he bought his first Skeeter in the 1960s, the company was already leading the way in what became an industry-wide transition to fiberglass. His was a 15-foot model with stick steering up front that was powered by a 35hp outboard. “It’s real easy to fish from, and it’s just a neat 6

looking boat,” Crutchfield said of those early flat-bottomed Skeeters. “It’s narrow, and the way the sides turn up to the cockpit makes it very stable to move around in.” With today’s bass boats, a 250hp Yamaha seems like a necessity to even compete on the tournament circuits. Back then, a Skeeter with a 35hp was capable of reaching speeds in excess of 30 mph. It was a fishing boat superior to any that came before it. The Super Skeeter arose as the boat for serious anglers fishing the large, newly constructed man-made reservoirs that have since fueled the sport. Crutchfield sold his 15-footer in the 1980s and almost immediately began kicking himself. He missed the narrow profile and shallow draft, along with kind of stability that allows him to stand comfortably and pole into very tight places. It wasn’t long before he ran into another old Skeeter he had to have, this one a 14-footer, originally powered by a 25hp outboard that has since been replaced by a 1950s model 12hp. Even with that old motor, it still gets around pretty quickly, and Crutchfield said it’s still the perfect small fishing boat where he launches on the Suwannee River. With the spirit of innovation that gave rise to that first bass boat and an open ear to the new requirements of early bass tournaments, Skeeter grew and evolved with the sport. The Skeeter Hawk did away with the characteristic pointed bow, which allowed for a smoother ride and a raised casting platform. In the 1970s, after moving into its current plant in Kilgore, Texas, Skeeter rolled the dice and introduced the legendary Wrangler to the bass fishing world. Rated for 150hp with a V-bottom, it was an odd and new style that absolutely dominated the competition in performance. It became the template that led to the high-performance fishing machines that roar

around our reservoirs today. In 2018, Skeeter Performance Fishing Boats is celebrating its 70th year of providing anglers with exceptional fishing boats. With modern technology and computer design capabilities, it has continued to lead the industry with innovations such as the first production composite bass boat, the ZX202, in the mid-1990s. The venerable ZX series, in all its versions, has been a staple in the bass tournament world for more then three decades. But listening to the needs of the fishermen who are its customers, Skeeter branched out to produce deep-v boats for walleye tournament anglers on the big lakes of the north, as well as bay boats for saltwater anglers. Skeeter’s acquisition by Yamaha in 1996 brought new resources to the table and advances followed. In 2001, Skeeter again set a new standard for the industry with its Torque Transfer Transom and Stringer System, which provides lift to the entire keel, while eliminating stress on the on the transom, deck, hull and sides. Through all the advancements, Skeeter boats bear little resemblance to Thurmond’s first bass boat. But the same concept, to design perfect

Drifting For

Nighttime Yellowfin On Gulf Floaters

ellowfin tuna are some of the most sought after gamefish in the world. They are the ahi tuna on the menus at restaurants and sushi bars, and in the water they have the speed and power to wear down anglers and break gear. The signature “spiral” that tuna commence in the waning moments of a fight is responsible for untold numbers of broken lines and broken hearts. After battling 30 mph runs for 20 minutes or more, the weary angler, captain and crew face one final test, a team effort to survive the spiral and get the fish on deck. These tense moments, when a big yellowfin turns sideways and begins to circle, using its body’s mass as leverage, are the most critical minutes of the fight. If the line even touches the boat, it will snap, and the circling fish provides many opportunities for this to happen. These moments are the reason Randy King, of Paparda Rey Fishing Charters out of Galveston, Texas, says the main limitation on their catch is the ability of the angler. The captain, Kenneth Doxey, is solid. He has been running their 54-foot Bertram and their 35-foot Cabo for more than a decade. He was the 2016 recipient

of the Houston Big Game Fishing Club’s Jim Peachey Award. The crew is also top-notch, which leaves the angler as the potential weak link. The good news is there will likely be multiple opportunities on one of their overnight trips to deep-water oil platforms off Texas. King said a great trip with six anglers would yield a dozen yellowfin tuna in the 40- to 120-pound range, and that doesn’t include the shots anglers will have at mahi-mahi, wahoo, marlin and blackfin tuna. Out of Galveston, it’s 100 miles or more into the Gulf of Mexico to reach the enormous floating gas and oil structures off the edge of the Continental Shelf. These deep-water facilities, known as “floaters,” create their own food chain, consolidating bait and gamefish from miles around. On a typical 36- or 48-hour trip, don’t plan on sleeping much. The floaters are brightly lit at night, which is when the tuna fishing is best. After identifying fish on the sonar, chumming and drift fishing with 30-pound-class tackle is usually the most productive method for yellowfin. “Sometimes the tuna will start breaching,” said King. “They’ll jump in the air like king mackerel.” It’s for these occasions, when fish are on the surface, that big spinning rigs armed with poppers are

kept on deck. Drifting and pulling poppers while chugging back up-current to start a new drift goes on all night long. At dawn, the bait rods come in, and it’s time to start trolling. The primary daylight targets are marlin, sailfish, wahoo and dolphin. Between night and day, it equates to a whole lot of big fish packed into a weekend at sea. f you’re new to fishing out of the Fort Myers, Fla. area, it can be very technical. It can also be very good. Knowing water depths for a certain fish can help you. Grouper typically reside in the 70- to 120-foot depths, and it changes with the water temps and the time of year. Red snapper will be in depths of 140 feet or more. Lane snapper are great table fare and can be found in 40 to 50 feet or deeper. This year we’ve caught more and bigger lanes than I have seen in eight years. Look for hard bottom areas; learn to use your sonar. If it works as you’re running it helps a lot. Watch your screen continuously as you get past 40 feet of water. I’m not going give out a bunch of numbers, but if you watch the sonar you’re going to find a lot of lane snapper in 45 to 65

feet of water. As you’re running out, watch for rocky ledges, as they will hold mangrove snapper, gag grouper and white grunts. If I spot a new area as I’m running, I’ll mark it on the GPS and label it “RO.” I’ll know it as a run over. If it looks really good, like a bunch of lanes, I sometimes label it “WOW.” That way I know to look for lanes on a future trip. As I get in 40 feet or so, I’ll watch the radar and sonar more than out in front of the boat, and that’s how I’ve found many new spots. I might not fish them for months out, and I’ll delete the ones that don’t produce. As for bait, squid, threadfin and herring are the best and cheapest. Live shrimp work, but it’s one bite and the shrimp is gone, which adds up. Chum with cut threadfin. Cut them small, as you don’t want to fill the fish up. Just give them a taste to get them interested. A few of the best spots I’ve found are “potholes.” I found them by going slowly from one spot to another, watching the bottom machine. In 74 feet of water, I saw the bottom drop just 2 feet and then come back up after 20 yards to form a pothole. I saw what looked like one fish. One more red grouper was more than I had at the time, so I anchored. It took a few minutes, but the bottom came alive and we caught 15 keeper red grouper! That pothole was one of the best places I ever found. So, I continued looking for places that seemed the same and found about a dozen of these potholes. I keep records of the keepers for each spot on the GPS, and I can’t tell you enough how important those records are. When it gets tough, go to the high-numbered spots. Capt. n early morning departure from Key West Harbor puts the motor vessel Reel Time, a 45-foot Sea Hunter, right in the middle of 8- to 10-foot seas. The owner of the boat has been running sea trials for the last few days and has been comfortable running the boat throughout the trip, but has not yet handled seas of this magnitude. The owner made a decision to pass the helm to Paul Myrtetus, a member of the Sea Hunter team, and told him to start heading north. Myrtetus has been a part of several sea trials and is comfortable running

vessels in all types of conditions. After setting his course, Myrtetus began picking up speed and cutting through the swells. Usually, Myrtetus would be standing at the helm with his back resting on the edge of the seat. However, with the design and hydraulic integration of the Llebroc helm chair, he was more than comfortable running the course while remaining seated. In fact, Paul turned around to see the rest of the crew sitting down, as well. Anyone familiar with running in rough seas will tell you it was an unusual sight. n early November, my buddy and I set out to fish some shallow flats in our kayaks. The water and air temperatures were near the 80-degree mark in south Texas. The area we had available to us only had a few inches of tidal flow predicted. When saltwater fishing, current is at the top of the list for catching requirements, but when the tide doesn’t provide it, find something that will. I had not fished this area in three years, and since that time hurricane Harvey changed a few things from the vehicle access point to my favorite hole, which isn’t a hole anymore. Needless to say, this was going to be a scouting mission as well as a fishing trip. We made our way to our first stop, which was a large knee- to waist-deep grass flat with a deep channel running down one side that is separated by a few spoil islands. We anchored up at the tip of a spoil island and casted to the channel. Although there was an abundance of bait, we didn’t get a strike. Off to plan B, my old honey hole. Once there, I realized the sweet spot was no longer, but we fished the area thoroughly since bait was present. We managed only a few strikes and a couple small trout. Knowing that the fish were inactive and that the tide was weak, I searched for an area where the wind might help drive a little more water flow to get the fish feeding. We headed back to the vicinity of our first stop, which was a flat the shape of a football field with the wind blowing from one endzone to the other. On the downwind side, there were a few small islands with breaks between them. Due to the wind, these breaks

funneled stronger water movement onto a small shallow flat. This flat didn’t have more bait than the other areas, but it did have water movement, which sparked the bite. We spent several hours in this tiny area catching reds and speckled trout. We used the same lures and presentation as we did earlier in the day. Soft plastic topwater jerk baits in pearl accounted for the more aggressive fish, but they were the smaller ones in this area. All of our larger fish came on slow-sinking paddle shad. Targeting the potholes and letting the lures slowly sink at the edge of the sand-to-grass transition drew the better strikes.

When fishing on less than desirable tides, remember to seek out locations that can offer it a push. Funnels and choke points are always a good bet, even if they are subtle. The water depth was the same on both sides and in between the islands, but it gave that little push the fish needed. Capt. his month’s column is about survival tips for winter fishing, apologies, and a fishing story. I know, in some of my articles, I have dealt with recreational sites; but, let’s be honest--I’m primarily a fishing fanatic--though I do enjoy a good paddling on occasion. These last cold snaps have killed off some of our snook population, but still offer some great fishing opportunities! As to survival tips--if you were as crazy as we were to go out in the cold snaps, here are some tips to beat the cold. First, like Mom always told you, “dress warm”. Layers of clothes work best. Waders, hip boots or such help keep your feet from freezing. And, a trick from Uncle Lew, put a heat pack in the bottom of each boot and you’ll be good for several hours. Be sure to let some air in on occasion to allow the pack to work properly. Another great idea (because for me, it’s always my hands that suffer) is to use Playtex gloves or something similar under your regular gloves; and, put Ben-Gay on your hands. Don’t laugh. It works! As to apologies--on a past trip out, we three hardy souls hit the frigid water in the midst of the cold snap. My friend, Brian, had no waders; so, I brought him a pair of my old ones to use. I swear to God, I didn’t know they had a hole in them. He suffered the first couple of hours before he had to head in. They say they can save most of the toes, so I can’t understand why he’s complaining. No, he’s fine-once he got feeling back in his feet. Anybody want to buy some used waders? (Sold as is.) On a recent trip to Hernando County’s pristine shores, my buddy, Lew, and I set out to do a little spring fishing. This area of the coast is loaded up with springs fed by the Floridan aquifer--Weekie Wachee and the Chaz are a couple of them. As the gulf temp drops the fish head for warmer

waters and can stack up there. We put in at one of my favorite spots, worked our way across the bay, and picked up some nice trout on a mixed bag of lures. Top water on a Zara spook Jr. in bone, Mirro-dine, Little John in glow and, Lew’s favorite, Gulp glow shrimp all worked well. Paddling back to the spring I couldn’t get the old Jeannie C. Reilly song Harper Valley PTA out of my head. It had played the day before on a country channel, and I was wishing it would go away. As we set up at the spring, the bite was a little slow and I somehow let loose with a verse from Harper Valley and, wham, I hooked into a nice black drum. I’m thinking “I’m on to something”--another verse another blackie. Lew is shaking his head and refusing to join me in a chorus (his loss). Seven drum later, he finally caught his first fish. I accused him of humming it, but he won’t admit it. We were primarily fishing straight down the spring with live shrimp at about 25 to 30 foot depth. This is kind of neat considering that a few feet to either side you could get out and walk. The sides were producing some nice reds--one over 30, a 29 and two nice keepers. As I hummed one more verse of Harper Valley, I landed a Dogfish rod and reel combo someone had recently lost at which point, Lew started muttering something about karma, to which I replied, “The day my Momma socked it to the Harper Valley PTA”. Well, if you’ve made it this far, I ‘d like to say “hi” to everyone in the Big Bend area, as well as, all my friends here on the Nature coast. Flats to Nearshore Report By: Capt. Gary Burch

ebruary 2018 Fishing Tips and Forecast Even with temperatures on the colder side this month, there will be nice, sunny Florida days that warm the waters on the inshore flats of Clearwater and Dunedin. Our February fishing days will depend on how many cold fronts push through the area and wreak havoc on our weather. But have no fear, the Florida sunshine will give us some fantastic fishing days. January and February have some extremely low tides that create an excellent opportunity to find fish. Cold fronts will push through every week or two and sometimes even twice a week. These weather conditions will produce extreme low tides especially around a new or full moon. The strong northwest and northeast winds push a lot of water out of Clearwater and Dunedin bays and at low tide expose grassy bottoms and oyster beds in the back waters, canals and mangrove cuts. The deeper holes adjacent to these high and dry areas may be holding lots of fish, so don’t frown going fishing on a low tide, while checking out the deeper areas, you may find your honey hole. Take this time to get out and search your favorite trout and redfish areas. Always add some new locations because trout can move a quarter of a mile from the last time you found them. The otimal condition for catching redfish and trout is a high tide in the afternoon at the warmest part of the day. As the water moves up on the sun baked flats, it could be three to five degrees warmer. The fish will be more active in this warmer water and catching a gator trout or an oversized redfish should be a lot easier. Redfish and trout have

been our targets this winter and when found, they are very lethargic and spooky. A very stealthy approach should be used at every location. I’ve had good results catching gator trout in Clearwater Bay using sixteenth of an ounce jigheads with CAL shad tails in darker colors and Mister Twister paddle tails in root beer with sparkle. Your favorite tackle shop has a huge selection of the most popular artificials for catching redfish and trout. The key to catching gator trout on artificials is to drift along spotty grass and sand areas, like the ones north of Dunedin Causeway, making long cast and retrieving very slowly. Let that jig brush along the bottom and through the grass. Also, let the jig stop for a few seconds before continuing, most likely the strike will come at this moment. Fish are not going to move very far or too quickly in the colder water to feed, slow it down and take your time. Redfish will be scattered in shallow water flats next to land areas and mangroves in the Dunedin area. If you find them at lower tides in the deeper holes, follow the fish as they move up on the flats and closer to oyster beds as the tide rises. The bite is slow, but they should eat a live shrimp, cut bait or a variety of artificials. Don’t let cold fronts keep you high and dry, after the front passes; we usually have the best weather in the country. Hernando County Ice fishing in Florida

knew with a title like that I would get your attention! With some of these cold fronts, I thought we would have to start ice fishing. On many charters this time of year I get a lot of people from the north, they tell me stories of ice fishing and how much fun it is. Being a native Floridian, I tell them “if it’s cold enough to make ice, then it’s too cold for me”. It’s the time of year to look for the convict fish AKA sheepshead. With the colder waters these fish can be found anywhere there is structure, in our area look around the rock piles, docks and channel markers. On a recent charter, I anchored near a rocky area and was able to catch a few. I used a #1 hook with a small weight and a piece of shrimp along with cut up shrimp for chum. Within a short time we had some nice sheep in the 18 - 20 inch range.

The size limit is 12 inches and 15, make sure that you remember your bag limits as well. Good baits to use for these fish include shrimp, crabs and barnacles. A good tactic for sheepshead fishing is to wait until you see the line start to move before setting the hook. These fish can be very tricky and will often steal your baits. Other inshore species like trout, redfish, black drum and snook can be caught in the back water areas. In our area, fish around the oyster beds, mangroves and deeper holes, especially if they’re near a spring. The best baits to use are select shrimp, creek cubs and small crabs. In these applications I like to use a 4/0 circle hook with a small weight, 20 pound fluorocarbon leader and the reel spooled with 15 pound braid. The best time to fish right now is two hours before and two hours after the high tide. Remember to use caution with these extreme winter low tides we’ve been having. If you don’t pay attention you could end up high and dry. Offshore fishing has been a challenge with

the cold fronts, wind and dirty water. For those willing to take on this challenge, there are still a lot of fish to be caught. Mangrove snappers, grunts, sea bass, hogfish, gag grouper (can’t keepseasonal) and red grouper are still being caught regularly. Look for these fish at rock piles in 20 to 60 feet. Bottom fishing with live baits or cut bait will work best. Once we start getting some steady warm weather, the Spanish mackerel, kingfish, cobia and sharks will be moving into the near shore areas. February Triple Play

ebruary is a prime month for catching a winter inshore triple play, which is catching a redfish, speckled trout and sheepshead. Let’s start with the schooling fish, speckled trout love to eat and enjoy cold weather unlike many of their counterparts. The best time to target trout is ahead of cold fronts with northeast winds which drain the bay of water forcing them into the canals and potholes. Anywhere you can find deep water close to the flats, that’s where they’ll be. The D.O.A. CAL Shad #351 (rootbeer/chartreuse tail) with a quarter ounce jighead for deeper water and #304 D.O.A. three inch shrimp (rootbeer/gold glitter) are my two favorite artificials for trout. Regarding live bait, try medium live shrimp with a small split shot worked along the bottom of canals or under docks. Also, try free lined medium shrimp along the edges of the flats or potholes. Trout are

leader shy, so I tend to downsize my leader to 15 or 20 pound instead of my usual 30; I also like to make my leader longer. Additionally, I go up on my hook size from my everyday 1/0 circle to 2/0 or 3/0 circle depending on the size of the fish. Redfish seem to gather around docks with structure and can be found in anywhere from four to eight feet of water. Try cut pieces of blue crab, it’s like candy to them. Also, medium live shrimp with a small sliding sinker set up can work since redfish are bottom feeders. Last but not least is the old winter standby the convict fish, AKA sheepshead. These fish love rocky residential canals and rocky bottom along the edges of the shipping channels in 10 to 20 feet. Sheepshead’s favorite meals are oysters, mussels, barnacles, fiddler crabs and of course, shrimp. Fresh dead shrimp work as well if not better than

live in my opinion. The average angler will use shrimp; so, here is a tip--cut the shrimp according to size, large shrimp in three pieces, medium in two, and small whole. The size of this is based on the size of the fish, if they are running under 14-inches I prefer #1 circle hook, if they are running bigger I switch to #1/0 circle hook. All circle hooks are not created equal and for the money I found Trident hooks hold up and have the best pricing. Freshwater Fishing Report

t’s spawning season for the largest of bass. February and March are the best months to target these fish; the prime locations are on the north and south Winter Haven Chain of lakes. Lake Rochelle and the north section of Lake Haines in Lake Alfred are also offering great fishing. In January we received many reports of bass in the seven to ten pound range, that trend should continue through March. Many of the largest bass are being caught on our old favorite, Booyah half ounce lipless crank baits in royalty color. We’re also being told that the Bass Assassin Boss Shiners in electric shad or hammertime colors are producing good results. The baits with purple glitter in them are being hit the most. For best results when using a Bass Assassin Boss Shiner, rig it with a jighead and flip it or swim it with a weighted hook. This is also prime season for specs, which will continue through the end of March. Reports of large limits and nice sizes are coming in daily from both boat and pier fishing in our area. The best bait to attract specs is still live minnows. To find out the when, where and what bait to use, call me and I’ll point you in the

verall fishing has been good in the bay area with plenty of redfish, trout and sheepshead being caught. A few cobias have been reported around the power plants and plenty of smaller blacktip, bull, bonnet and hammerheads willing to give you a tug. Without the colder water temps needed to send them looking for warm water they are not as bunched up as usual, but when they are you can bet you’ll have plenty of company fishing the warm water runoffs. Shrimp always work and using a small jighead makes it easier to sight cast. The cold water has the snook bite pretty much on hold, but you can always dredge up a couple if you look and fish hard enough. Give them a break until the

water warms up and they get a chance to recover from the winter temperatures, the greenbacks should be back on the flats by then and fishing will be much better. Reds continue being active, but they haven’t been as big as usual, I’m getting plenty of reports that rat reds are running with the occasional group of larger fish on the grass flats with broken bottom, submerged oyster bars, mangrove shorelines and canals. Live shrimp seem to be the bait of choice, but artificials like the three inch Gulp! shrimp and gold spoons still work. Trout action should continue on the upswing with cooler water temperatures. The larger fish should start pushing onto the flats from deep water, fish the stronger tides around deep water flats and rocky islands. They’ll be eating shrimp, small pinfish and soft

plastic lures either free-lined or under a popping cork. Remember, the bite always comes as the baits begin to fall, so don’t be surprised to have a fish on just after the lure hits the water. The MirrOdine from MirrOlure is one of the best trout lures you can fish. Fish it using a slow methodic retrieve and hang on. Don’t be surprised to see a cobia on the back of large rays and manatees. As the waters cool you should see them around the hot water discharges of power plants. Large shrimp on a quarter ounce jighead normally does the trick, but small or chunk crab also works. Keep a larger Gulp! eel rigged for a quick cast should you come across one while running the open water. Sharks also frequent the warm water discharges this time of year so don’t be surprise when you catch one while targeting Cobia. Sheepshead and snappers will show up everywhere during the

winter months. Try fishing these great fighters around markers, bridge fenders, docks, seawalls, fish attractors, rock piles, oyster bars or practically any type of structure. inter means one thing to me as a guide: negative low tides. Seeing that little minus symbol in front of the water levels on the tide chart, especially when the lows happen at both the early mornings and just before sunset, is almost as good as finding presents under the tree on Christmas morning. These are some of the best conditions to chase tailing redfish, and most days in both February and March have a tide of 0.0 or lower no matter where you are on this side of the state. For die hard skinny water anglers this is as good as it gets. My favorite times to hit these ultra-shallow flats are about an hour before the bottom of the tide and then the first two hours of the rising water. This is when I usually find the redfish

feeding most aggressively since their prey, which is mostly crabs and finger mullet, is easily pinned to the bottom. This is also when the reds stick their tails straight up into the air and start waving them like signal flags. It’s easily one of the coolest things you can see out on the flats. One other thing to look for out there that will help you find hungry redfish are cruising stingrays. The bigger rays attract them like a magnet on certain flats in Pine Island Sound, I’ve seen more than a dozen reds hanging on their backs waiting for a crab to flush from underneath. This is also a common behavior for other species of gamefish so it’s always a great idea to toss a lure or fly at any passing ray, some of the biggest trout and jacks I’ve ever seen have been landed this way. The rays are easy creatures to spot on the negative low tides, too. Just look for the large pushes of water or even their wingtips poking above the surface. I’ve written several times before about the best way to go after low tide reds with flies, which is basically to bonk them right on the head with light spoon patterns. That tactic obviously won’t work if you’re throwing heavier artificials with spinning gear. One lure I’ve had great success with that doesn’t spook them as easily are Gulp jerk shads rigged on weedless swim bait hooks. These can be dropped right in a school of feeding reds and

usually get pounced on immediately. With 10 pound braid you can throw these light Gulps very accurately and for a surprisingly long distance. Gulps really are the one artificial that actually does work better than live bait (most of the time.) One last thing to know about working schools of redfish on a falling tide is to approach with caution. The water during a negative low can disappear for a long time, especially on a windy day after a cold front. It’s very easy to get shoved up onto a flat or pole your way into an area while you’re chasing tailers and not get back out, even in a very light skiff. This would be a very miserable experience if it happened at sunset and forced you to stay on the water well into the dark. Keep in mind that the numbers you see on a tide chart are predictions and nothing more than that. While very accurate, the depths and times of posted tides can vary significantly depending on the weather. RECIPE OF THE MONTH:

DOWN LOW SHRIMP

his is an easy to make foil packet packed with shrimp, sausage, corn, potatoes, zucchini and squash. It’s a full meal with zero clean-up!

Ingredients: • 1 1/2 pounds large shrimp, peeled and deveined • 4 links of brat sausage, thinly sliced • 2 ears of corn, each cut crosswise into 4 pieces • 1 pound of baby red potatoes, halved • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 4 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves • 1 zucchini sliced thin • 1 yellow squash sliced thin • 2 cloves garlic smashed Directions: Preheat oven to 350. Cut four

sheets of foil, about 12-inches long. Divide s h r i m p , sausage, corn, potatoes, zucchini and squash into 4 equal portions, then add to the center of each foil in a single layer. Fold up all 4 sides of each foil packet. Add olive oil, Old Bay seasoning, salt and pepper, to taste; gently toss to combine. Fold the sides of the foil over the shrimp, covering completely and sealing the packets closed. Place foil packets in the oven and cook until just cooked through, about 30 to 45 minutes. Serve immediately, garnished with parsley, if desired.

South Shore Tampa Bay February Frenzy By: Capt. Joel Brandenburg

ebruary fishing is really determined by the weather conditions. When it’s cold we’ll fish cobia, sharks, jack, pompano, permit and tarpon at the power plants or trout, snook and redfish in the residential canals. If the weather is warmer we’ll target trout, snook and redfish in the rivers and estuaries. Below are ways we fish in various weather situations. Cold weather fish at the power plants: Cobia: Find cobia in tight groups on top of the water following rays, manatees and sea turtles. Use a 10 inch black or green plastic eel. Sharks: Look for blacktips, bulls and bonne heads in the two to twenty foot depths. For blacktips and bulls we like to use chunks of ladyfish or mullet but sometimes we will also use them live and free line. To target bonnetheads use live shrimp on a jighead under a bobber. Jack Crevalle: Huge schools of these fish can be seen cruising on top of the water. We like to use gold spoons or jigheads and plasitics casted into the school. Pompano and Permit: You’ll see them leaping in your prop wash. Use yellow or pink Silly Willy jigs on 10 or 12 pound mono leader. Retrieve your jigs slowly then more quickly, inconsistently until you find the tempo that the fish like. Tarpon: Use sand perch or large pinfish free lined or under a bobber on a high outgoing tide. Anchor as tight to the legal

fishing areas of the power plants as possible. Tarpon bite the best on an incoming tide. Warm weather fish in rivers and estuaries: Snook: Fish near the mangroves or river mouths using live greenbacks free lined or under a bobber. For over slot snook it’s hard to beat a 10 or 12 inch live ladyfish. Redfish: Target oyster bars on a moving tide using a red or yellow quarter ounce jighead tipped with a live shrimp or dead stick a cut pinfish. Reds are starting to school back together. Trout: Look for trout on grass flats in the four to six foot depths. Use a live shrimp on a jighead under a bobber, pop your bobber once a minute or so. Also we use a blue or green MirrOlure MirrOdine or a Yozzuri glass minnow. Cast past the sand holes in the grass flats and reel your bait to them. No matter if the weather is cold or warm; February is a great fishing month. You might have to move around a bit to find the bite, but stay persistent and keep casting, because in February the bite can turn on and off like a light!

Dock Spotting Redfish

ith the water temperatures starting to get a lot cooler and clearer, I like to sight cast redfish under docks. Always remember to pull up to a dock quietly so that you don’t spook the fish. If you do spook them just wait it out, they will be back, patience is key when this happens. These fish are cold and like slow moving baits, so I prefer to use a live shrimp with a quarter ounce jighead. When using this technique slowly bounce it on the bottom and you should get an eat. Another method is to free line a decent size shrimp with a 3/0 Owner mosquito hook with a 20 pound leader. Fishing docks you will also catch other fish like sheepsheads and snappers. The docks that I look for have grass under them or some nice structures around the dock. I also look for docks that have cement pilings, as they will have oysters on the bottom of the pilings which redfish love to

Life on a Shrimp Boat

he crew arrives at the docks just before sunset and they see their stalwart friend, the Cyclone, an old vessel that was once a navy riverboat now configured as a shrimp boat. Her hull and deck are weathered from her daily trips out to sea, she may not be pretty but she can do her job. John and his mate Jerry are well aware of the hard work that is ahead of them, they begin to prep the vessel. With the heat of the day dissipating, both men start their pre-trip checklist. Checking the engine fluids, putting fuel in the generator and checking the nets are just a few of the tasks at hand. This is an essential ritual that has been performed thousands of nights before. As the engine warms up, that familiar diesel smell fills the air, the old boat is ready for another night’s duty. As she makes her way to the Gulf of Mexico, the brilliant colors of the sunset fill the sky, a reminder to both men of just how rewarding this grueling work can be. The old Cyclone is escorted by a flock of gulls as it makes its way out to the Gulf. The gulls are patient, knowing their dinner is just hours away. A cool breeze is welcoming to the already sweat drenched crew. The trip out to the harvesting grounds is a time to reflect on what the evening will bring, and the bounty that “mother ocean” will provide. John already knows his destination for the evening, he has been doing this for so long, the night’s trip is based on pure intuition. As the sun disappears beyond the horizon, the lights of other shrimp boats can be seen off in the distance. A reassuring sight, they know that if there are any

problems, their “brothers of the sea” will come to assist them. Rock and roll is blaring out of the speakers overhead; the chatter of the radio can be heard in the background. They have reached their starting point, 14 miles out, federal waters. The engine slows as John begins to lower the nets, the nets will roll on the oceans bottom to harvest the evenings treasures. At a snail’s pace, the Cyclone pushes forward while the nets collect crustaceans to be sold throughout the east coast. The hard work is about to begin, the crew dawns their orange, suspender-ed slickers. After a mile or so, the nets are lifted; the catch is captured in the bottom of the mesh. Collection and sorting tables are on either side of the boat. John and Jerry are manning their stations, the nets are opened and the catch splashes into the dump tank. The crew extracts the sea grass from the tank with silvery pitch forks, then place it on the sorting table, by-catch, and shrimp all twisting, turning, and squirming. The sight of shrimp being thrown into the adjoining live-wells is fast and furious. The limited by-catch is scraped off the table with a wooden board to return to the depths from which they came. Another old, familiar, friend appears out of the darkness. At first a few and then many, ravenous black tip sharks. As the by-catch goes overboard, a feeding frenzy begins. The gulls put on an aerial show catching dinner and the sharks devour the smorgasbord as it hits the water. To John and Jerry, this is nothing new, just all part of the evening’s work. When the sorting is done, the nets are again dropped. This routine goes on throughout the night. The work is brutal, but there is no easy way to do this job. The livewells slowly fill with shrimp. Each night is different, the tanks can fill within hours, or it can be a long, back breaking evening. Just before

sunrise, John exclaims, “we are heading home”, but the job is not over. This well-orchestrated team begins to clear the evening’s mess. Without a word spoken, both men know their duties and the Cyclone and her nets are clean. Upon arriving back to dock, it is a new day, the sun is rising. John weighs and bags the shrimp; Jerry gives the Cyclone one last freshwater rinse down. The bagged shrimp will be taken to be processed and distributed. The lights of the Cyclone are extinguished, she has time to rest before the crew returns that evening. This is a tough, arduous,

hilippe Park in Safety Harbor is the oldest park in Pinellas County; it is named after Odet Philippe (1787-1869), the first permanent, non-native settler in the county. Philippe has been credited with bringing citrus growing and cigars to the Tampa Bay area. There are many stories about this man of mystery, from being a good friend to Napoleon, a doctor and a comrade to pirates. Some of these tall tales were spun by Philippe himself and are more fiction than fact. The park is 122 acres and is one of the most beautiful parks in the

county. Sprawling oak trees and the gentle sea-breeze of Old Tampa Bay make this a perfect location for the land-based angler. A seawall encompasses a large portion of this coastline. The largest Indian (Tocobaga Tribe) mound in the Tampa Bay region can be found on these grounds. The view from this elevated mound is stunning. Wade fishing the park can be difficult; the trek may be tough because of the muddy bottom. There are sandbars and firmer bottom that can be found through studying the terrain and by trial and error.

Redfish, snook, whiting, trout and all the other usual suspects can be had fishing this area. There are also areas with docks, oyster beds and mangroves that can be explored. Do not overlook the power line towers, as they create great structure for fish to inhabit. The park boasts picnic shelters, playgrounds, grilling stations, volleyball courts, a ball field and restrooms. Admission to the park is free and there is also a small boat ramp that opens at sunrise daily and can accommodate kayak anglers ($6 for vehicle and trailer parking, $2 for just the vehicle). If you are coming to fish with live bait or need fishing supplies, consider a tackle shop close to your home, the nearest tackle shop to the park is quite a distance away. After a day at the

park, enjoy a snack or meal in the quaint town of Safety Harbor, you will be pleasantly surprised by the eclectic atmosphere. ith winter coming to an end and the weather getting warmer, many anglers are looking to soak their lines as the new year starts to pass by. Sheepshead have made their way into Tampa Bay in great numbers. They are well known for their dominant presence during the late winter months, historically they peak in number during February and March. They can be found at any of the Saint Petersburg bridges, docks, seawalls, and jetties, they love lots of structure. I always head to my favorite mangrove snapper spots this time of year to find them. Sheepshead desire the same structure and environment as mangrove snappers. Most of the time when fishing these areas you will catch more sheepshead than snappers just because of their great numbers during these months. Choice baits are live shrimp and fiddler crabs. These baits should be presented on a size 1/0 hook freelined, or with a split shot, or with your favorite eighth to quarter ounce jighead. W h e r e there’s one there are many, keeping count is important when catching these guys

because you can fill a cooler quickly when the bite is on. These fish have a very interesting appearance, black and white vertical lines comparable to the stripes on a zebra, and the teeth are comparable to those of many land dwelling mammals. Some have a gold and bluish hue that covers the top of their head like the one in the featured photo. The meat is delicious when fried, grilled, or baked. There are many different ways to serve it, but the most common are as sandwiches, tacos, or just by itself. If you’re fishing the bay side of St. Petersburg I recommend stopping at “Mitch’s Bait and Tackle” off of 62nd Ave and 4th St. Mitch always has everything you need for a good day of fishing. Target Cold Tolerant Species in February By: Capt. Mike Anderson

ebruary is the month I target sheepshead, speckled trout and redfish as they are all very cold water tolerant and remain easy targets even in winter. Normally cold windy conditions this month drop water temps and make some species less active. Use live shrimp or artificial

baits that you can work slowly for best results this month. Shrimp digest much easier and faster than pilchards or mullet and with the cold water slowing down the metabolism of most fish, shrimp are an excellent bait choice. For sheepshead I like to tail hook a live shrimp on a quarter ounce jighead and pitch them under docks or near bridge pilings. Use a jighead with a small hook if possible, they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t call sheepshead convict fish for no reason! Sheepshead will pick even the most seasoned anglers clean from time to time. This tactic will work on redfish as well, target dock lines that are older and adjacent to deeper water, as this gives the redfish a safe travel path and the safety of deep water if water temps

should suddenly plummet. As for speckled trout, they are probably the most active and easiest to catch in a variety of ways. My favorite trout tactic is to throw soft plastic paddle tail baits like the MirrOlure Marsh Minnow on a quarter ounce jighead. Working deeper grass flats you can cover a lot of water and get your bait in front of a lot more fish which increases your opportunities to hook up. Live shrimp will work under a popping cork as well. Target grass flats in the four to eight foot depths; I tend to find better concentrations of fish on the lower tides when using this method. Moving water is always a key as is trying to find slightly warmer areas, even a two degree temperature difference can turn the bite on. To try and locate warmer waters, try targeting areas with darker bottoms as they tend to warm the fastest on sunny days. February weather can sometimes be challenging, but

targeting the right species with the right bait can make all the difference out there. Last year the first place team, Team YAM, won over $16,000. We also raised $80,000 to donate to the Ding Darlin Wildlife Refuge as well, so it was a win-win. In 1924 and 1942, Jay Norwood Darling AKA “Ding” was honored with a Pulitzer Prize for a cartoon that espoused hard work and nature. Mr. Darling became alarmed at the loss of wildlife habitat and the possible extinction of many species and became an early pioneer for conservation. veryone asked for a cold winter in Florida and it looks like we got it. Last month air temperatures dropped well into the teens some days and then got back up to the mid 60’s in between. That sudden exchange of high/low temps affects our fishery significantly. Subtropical fish like tarpon and snook make their way offshore, down south or as far up the nearest rivers or creeks in search of warmer water. Some don’t make it. Parts of Florida suffered a small fish kill, and amongst the snook and tarpon, redfish were also found dead. As sad as it sounds it’s actually only Mother

Nature’s way of cleaning up the environment. One fish that seems to withstand extreme rigid temps are speckled trout. The seatrout bite has been phenomenal here in Tampa Bay since the fronts started rolling in. Fish of all sizes have kept my clients busy the last month. We have been catching many trout in the grass flats using soft plastics like my new favorite, the Smackbait series by Unfair Lures. I have been setting all of my clients up with either lure in the series, (mostly the Smakshad) ,with an eighth of an ounce PvR Turboset jig tied on with 15-20 pound fluorocarbon leader and a light 10 pound seven and a half

foot rod. As far as lure colors, I find that the darker colors work best in low to no light and the lighter colors on the brighter days work best. Motor oil, melon, coffee and baby bass catch most fish on the darker days and live glow white, glow, hot orange and chartreuse on the lighter days. Locating these fish can be easy some days but can also require a bit of searching. When fishing the flats, I look for ones that are covered by grass patches mixed with shell or sandy bottom; some call this salt and pepper bottom. I’ll typically drift these flats while fan casting the area around me until I locate the bite. Once I get a bite, I will anchor up and continue to cast. Once the bite stops I just pull up anchor and repeat hoping to find another hole. This technique will catch you a lot of fish but mostly under slot fish to just keepers. For the bigger ones, start in shallow water (one to

two feet) and look for sight casting opportunities or movement before casting. These fish are usually very aggressive because of their natural territorial instincts and will most likely eat if the presentation is right. Trout won’t be the only fish you will be catching this time of year using these techniques. Flounder, ladyfish, redfish, pompano and even cobia will come out to play from time to time as well! Whatever happens, don’t give up! Fishing can always be a little tough for some in the cold days but if you keep at it, you will be successful. y day started like any other, another early morning shark charter. My clients, two Canadian men on vacation, had no idea about what they were about to encounter. If you aren’t familiar with the migration patterns in Boca Grande, on Florida’s west coast near Fort Myers, sharks follow the yearly tarpon migration starting in mid-spring. The day began with us running roughly 3 miles offshore toward a trough that has been known to hold sharks. I did some rigging and got our baits in the water. Shark fishing is often a waiting game, and so our wait began. It didn’t last long. Within five minutes the Okuma 8000 Series was screaming from the rod holder, with no end in sight. The adrenaline started pumping, and I immediately started pulling up the anchor and prepared for a serious fight with a serious fish. With the boat in position, we started the chase. was on. The next two hours were full of reeling, swear words and sweat. We were dragged over 3 miles of ocean. With my clients at the point of exhaustion, it seemed that the shark was ready to give in, but not without one last run. Finally, we saw gray on the surface. With the shark next to the boat, I recognized it was a spinner shark. I immediately noted that this shark was huge for its species. Spinners are known to be jumpers, but this shark never breached the surface because of its size. My mind went right to the IGFA record. Thankfully, I had enough cell signal to Google the current record, even after the shark dragged us further offshore. The record was 205 pounds. I knew this shark was bigger than that. I made some quick phone calls and realized I would most likely have to kill the fish to get the record. I am usually a catch and release fisherman, so I was against brining the fish in, as were my clients. It took three of us to bring the fish into the boat to get a photo for bragging rights. I primarily deal with the Goliath grouper species, doing research for Florida Fish and Wildlife. This fish was comparable to the 300-pound Goliaths I catch regularly. After a few pictures and measurements, she became green again. She helped herself into the water and swam right off. We estimated the fish to be in the 260- to 270-pound range with a length of plus-8 feet. I loved seeing my client’s faces and reactions throughout the whole fight. Telling Good Fish Stories By Matt Jorn

“W

hat did you catch today?” It is a question asked at every marina, boat ramp and backyard dock in the world every day of the fishing calendar. This is your chance to hold up your catch, your fillet bag or your digital camera. It is a chance to reveal (or conceal) details regarding where and how you snared your prey. It is also the chance to spin a wonderful tale of the leviathan that you fought for hours, had right next to the boat, and locked eyes with only to have it spit the hook/break the leader/get caught on the props/ pull you overboard… we’ve all been there! Even the master angler and author Ernest Hemingway’s beloved “The Old Man and the Sea” is a fish tale, featuring the angler we all wish we were losing the fish we all wish we could catch.

The craft of embellishing your catch is a time-honored tradition; however as the curator of the FishingNosara Costa Rica Fishing Report, I take umbrage with the 21st century version of the fish story. For the last seven years, I have documented every one of the 2,000plus trips run by the Nosara, Costa Rica based fishing team. Each report is meticulously checked for accuracy, including the angler’s names, trip date, fish caught, and (most importantly) photographs of the catches. I also encourage my clients to offer their own stories from the fishing experience. In December 2017, we hosted Laura and Michael Price. Here’s what Laura wrote: “My husband and I went out today on the Explorer. We had an AMAZING time!!! We ended the day with six mahi mahi caught with one mahi mahi, one tuna and one marlin getting away. Phenomenal crew! We loved every minute of it!” Here is another example, this time from angler Kevin Bahr: “We went with Capt. William and his mate Johnny. They were very professional and ready to ensure we had a successful outing on May 12. The weather was pretty sketchy, but we were able to locate the fish and ended up with a freezer full of ahi and mahi mahi. We cut our day short due to the weather, but our crew was willing to stay out longer if we wanted to. Despite the weather, it was a great day!” Everyone knows that the Internet is a place where the line between fact and fiction is often blurry; from politics, to sports, to fishing—it is not always easy to separate the truth, from an opinion, from a sales pitch. For instance, a quick glance at a competing Central American fishing charter’s report looks like this: Dec 27, 3 sailfish, 6 mahi-mahi, 1 marlin. Dec 28, 7 sailfish, 2 marlin. Dec 29, 5 mahi-mahi, 3 yellowfin tuna, 1 sailfish. Who is this helping? Why no details, no photos? Is this for search engines, the illiterate, or the lazy? I put it to all anglers in the 21st century posting online: Tell me a good fish story or log-off.

ike enthusiasts of any sport, if you stay with spearfishing long enough, you become intimately familiar with every detail of your equipment. Here’s an overview of what a newbie might want to know before buying that first speargun. Most spearguns are powered by bands, normally between one and three bands. There are two main types. The American style is recognized by the wood stock and is durable, sturdy and easy to load. The Eurogun style has a tubular shaped barrel, rear handle, and a thinner shaft well suited for freediving and smaller fish. In either case, spearguns are equipped with a trigger mechanism. The back end of the shaft engages into the trigger mechanism. Once the bands are loaded, the trigger is pulled and the shaft flies out due to the pulling load of the bands. You do not want to overload a gun by putting more bands than what it’s designed for as it could make the gun inaccurate or unsafe. Most spearguns now include a reel. This is especially needed if freediving and/or spearing larger fish, so the gun is not yanked out of your hands. If spearing a very large fish such as a tuna, which could spool your line in a matter of seconds, a line and float are required so the diver can pull it in from the surface. Shafts come in different lengths and diameters to match the gun, and spearos look for the perfect shaft—one that will not bend, not rust, fly straight in the water, and with a barb that will hold the fish securely. It’s wise to always carry a spare shaft or two on the boat, in case a shaft gets bent or lost. Like shafts, the bands are also replaced periodically, and it’s a good idea to carry spares in case one breaks. When bands get old, they start to get crack lines, or the wishbones can begin to fray, so it’s best to replace them before one snaps. There’s a wider variety of speargun brands than ever on the

market. These include: Wong, AB Biller, Riffe, Hammerhead, Cressi, SEAC, Mares, Rob Allen, Koah, Mako, JBL and more.
