Access weather and fishing data via satellite up to 200 miles from the contiguous U.S. shoreline.
SiriusXM Marine Weather overlays directly on your chartplotter while fishing coastal or offshore waters and provides two vital services for anglers. First, and most importantly, it helps you detect, monitor and avoid bad weather without needing a cell signal. Storms can build quickly at sea, and the numerous, selectable overlay options within the SiriusXM menu lets you tailor the display to your desired level to make sure you and your crew stay safe. In addition to safety, the marine weather overlay can also help you catch more fish. Graphic displays of sea surface temperature contours and wind directions and speeds help you locate tide and current edges, and see where bait fish might be stacked up, giving you a definitive edge when trying to find the bite. With key information needed to find the locations in which fish are most likely to appear, anglers can save time and fuel while fishing.
H E R E I S W H AT T H E P R O S S AY A B O U T S I R I U S X M M A R I N E ’ S S E R V I C E S Rain during a day of offshore fishing is uncomfortable, frustrating and can ruin a trip. We continuously use our SiriusXM Marine Weather to monitor the weather pattern the night before a trip, the morning of, and throughout the day. We’ve been able to track the direction of a storm prior to leaving port and while fishing offshore. The comfort of knowing we can stay ahead of, or just behind, a fast moving storm gives us great peace of mind!
Without question, one of Team Canyon Runner’s most valuable tools is the implementation of SiriusXM’s sea surface temperature overlays on our plotters. For example, we can manipulate the SST data with a range from, say, 68 to 85 degrees. That allows the chart to recalibrate the new 68-degree water temp as blue in color and the 82-degree water temp as red. Seeing a hard, defining break is irreplaceable. It has steered our boats to the fish countless times.
Yesterday was perfect example of why I use SiriusXM satellite weather. I was charter fishing 30 miles NW of Key West knowing a front was coming. Having checked the wind barbs in the front I could see they were 200 miles away moving NW at 30mph. I was able to finish my charter and beat the front home safely and still get a full day of fishing in. Well worth the price of the SiriusXM service.

Product Review COBRA MARINE JUMPACK XL H2O The JumPack XL H2O is Cobra’s most versatile and powerful portable power source and jump starter yet. It enables you to jumpstart your car, truck, RV or marine engine and charge your mobile devices in all weather conditions. It is designed to jump start marine outboards, large V8 gasoline and diesel engines direct-from-the-battery or from the 12V port, and it is compliant with the latest safety UL standard. Most jump starters only work with cables connected to the battery. The JumPack can also jump a battery via the 12V port inside the vehicle, which means the user can stay safely inside the vehicle while the battery charges. The rugged and waterproof design makes it the perfect portable power device for any adventure. This compact unit is lightweight and powerful, with a lithium-cobalt battery that holds a charge longer and is smaller than traditional jump starters. An easy to view tri-color LED indicates the status of the JumPack and when it’s safe to start the vehicle. It runs its own self diagnostics to make sure the cables are attached properly, and if not, the JumPack will not allow itself to be used. This protects the user and the vehicle. Dual 3 Amp USB ports allow for rapid charging of two portable devices simultaneously, and it has a built-in super-bright LED flashlight, strobe and SOS LED. The unit includes jumper cables with clamps, a 12-volt charger cable, AC charge adapter and a neoprene carrying case.
Paired with video-enabled sonar units like Raymarine’s new Axoim Pro or eSeries, an Aqua-Vu underwater camera becomes the ultimate fishfinding machine. Whether it’s under ice or on open water, watching the fish and your lure in real-time takes the excitement of sight fishing to another level. It also gives obvious advantages to the angler. With Aqua-Vu, you’ll know exactly what fish is down there and be able to adjust the presentation to home in on what action triggers the fish to bite. But that’s just the beginning. All anglers know how important water temperature is to finding feeding fish. Probes equipped on the camera reveal water temperature at the depth you’re fishing, which can be markedly different from the temperature at the surface. With that information, it is easier than ever to find the conditions you’re looking for. Aqua-Vu can be plugged directly into a Raymarine sonar unit and viewed on the screen. This sonar, GPS and video combination is a powerful tool to make you a better angler, and they can all be viewed at the same time. Identify structure with sonar, drop a camera down to see exactly what it is and what species are holding on it, and then mark it on the GPS. It can all be achieved on the same unit.

In February, Raymarine partnered with FLIR to bring to market its most advanced marine radar system. Quantum 2, with Doppler target identification, is designed for integration with Raymarine’s awardwinning Axiom multifunction displays to enhance boaters’ situational awareness by intelligently identifying moving and static targets at both long and short ranges. Quantum 2 is tuned to detect moving versus stationary targets. It color codes moving targets to indicate whether they are getting closer (red) or moving away (green). In addition, Quantum 2 brings a new Safety Sector feature that highlights and color codes potentially dangerous static targets within 200 meters in front of the vessel. Advanced users will appreciate Quantum 2’s 25-target mini-automatic radar plotting aid (MARPA). Developed for the United States Coast Guard, Quantum 2’s MARPA feature is doppler-assisted, meaning inbound contacts can be acquired automatically by the radar display to ease navigation in congested waters. Quantum 2 also features CHIRP Pulse Compression technology, which uses compressed radar pulses to display targets like boats, landmarks, rocks and weather cells with unsurpassed resolution and separation. Quantum 2’s flexible design allows for Wi-Fi networking to Raymarine multifunction displays (MFDs) or via traditional wired configuration, making installation much easier and eliminating the need for additional radar cabling or interface boxes.
ACR Electronics is making life easier and safer for boat owners with pre-packed premium boating Survival Kits. Affordably priced and ideal for any boater, the kits include essential products needed to quickly abandon ship and alert the Coast Guard. Boaters carrying one of the bags on-board will be equipped with an ACR Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) or Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) operating on the 406 MHz frequency. The beacons can be quickly and easily activated in an emergency to enable responders to identify and locate a boater in distress. The kits also contain a variety of other products including an abandon ship bag, strobe lights, signal mirror and a whistle to further help rescuers. ACR Survival Kits give you peace of mind knowing the safety of your family and crew is ensured beyond the minimum U.S. Coast Guard requirements. When time is short and there is no help in sight, boaters can grab the bag and depend on the kit for a swift rescue.
If you need compact, powerful GPS tracking, AtlasTrax MiniTrax is the system for you. The MiniTrax compact GPS satellite tracking system is only 3” x 2”. It comes battery powered, but can also be hardwired or used with a 12 volt charger. MiniTrax qualifies as a required GPS tracker for insurance companies and provides great mapping features. Alert messages are sent by email or text to notify the user of movement. A messagehandling server gives access to all trips and loved ones can check the exact boat location with the click of a mouse. With several satellite message plans available, you can also see data such as mileage, time length of trips, latitudes and longitudes, headings and speeds. MiniTrax is fully waterproof, has daily battery reports and is ideal for boats, aviation, jet skis, ATVs, RV’s, golf carts, construction and transportation equipment. The new Altasalarm audible/visual system with a 60-foot cable wrap, door hatch and canvas sensor can notify you with a loud siren if someone activates a sensor in the event of attempt theft.

Product Review FURUNO INTRODUCES NEW DUAL TOUCH-SCREEN BLACK BOX OFFERING Furuno set a new standard for touch-screen technology when they introduced NavNet TZtouch2, the first multi-function display (MFD) to utilize edge-swipe technology. In February, they raised the bar on innovative navigation solutions with the introduction of a Black Box NavNet TZtouch2 system, the TZT2BB. This next step in the NavNet series takes the feature set of the award-winning TZtouch2 and packs it into a brand-new black box configuration with dual-display capability. The TZT2BB packs enough processing power to drive two separate touch-screen displays, delivering twice the navigation potential from a single, compact black box unit, for the most technologically advanced all-glass bridge available. TZT2BB can drive two independent monitors such as Furuno’s 17”, 19” or 24” Multi Touch Displays, which allows you to seamlessly move from one screen to the other. It has the capability to handle different monitor resolutions and aspect ratios, which is convenient if you want to utilize existing monitors of different sizes. It also supports full HD video input in HDMI format, for surveillance cameras, sonar or entertainment systems. The TZT2BB operates with the same intuitive Multi Touch interface as the current TZtouch2 MFDs. You can add an optional external keyboard. Customers looking to upgrade from a NavNet 3D Black Box system will be happy to learn that the external TZT2BB keyboard is the same size as their existing keyboard, making it an easy swap, with no cutting. A retrofit kit will be available as an option to convert NavNet 3D’s MFDBB keyboard for use with the new TZT2BB. Similar to the 12.1” and 15.6” NavNet TZtouch2 models, the TZT2BB leverages Furuno’s award-winning network products, including a variety of NXT
and X-Class radars, fishfinders, multi-beam sonar, instruments and other sensors. Radars are available ranging from a compact, 4kW Solid-State Doppler Dome to a super powerful 25kW Open Array. For fishfinders, the TZT2BB includes a built-in dual-frequency Furuno Fish Finder with RezBoost, which creates images 4 to 8 times sharper than a conventional fishfinder. In addition to the built-in Fish Finder, Furuno has impressive add-on options that include the DFF3D Multi-Beam Sonar and DFF1-UHD TruEcho CHIRP Fish Finder. You can both the internal fish finder and the DFF3D Multi-Beam Sonar simultaneously. The unit comes preloaded with raster, vector and fishing charts for the Western Hemisphere in MapMedia’s MM3D format. The U.S. NOAA raster and vector charts are free, while the preloaded Navionics and C-Map charts are available for purchase. Furuno also provides free satellite photography for the U.S. that can be downloaded from their website. As with the TZTL12F and TZTL15F models, tablets and smartphones can be accessed via built-in WiFi, with several free apps available on both Apple and Android platforms, allowing you to remotely view and control your navigation network. Furuno continues to break new ground with their latest Black Box, the TZT2BB. The TZT2BB is perfect for larger helms to display all navigation, radar, fishfinder and instrument sensors across dual displays. For more information on the NavNet TZT2BB, contact Furuno at (360) 8349300 or visit them online at www.FurunoUSA.com.

he gripe came from up on the poling platform, “You won’t see any fish when you’re sitting in the boat blasting Garth Brooks.” Maybe tarpon on this particular stretch of the Florida coast don’t like country music. Or maybe it had something to do with the sound system, which was garbage. Over the wind and waves, the noise rattling from the speakers was barely discernible as music, so we turned it off… and didn’t spot the first fish through an 8-hour day on the water. It’s during slow trips like these when good tunes are most important. The songs become the soundtracks to our adventures. That’s why you owe it to your fishing buddies to have a good sound system on the boat. When it comes to sound quality, there isn’t a company out there better than Miramar, Florida’s JL Audio. Since the mid1970s, when co-founders Lucio Proni and Jim Birch built speakers during summer break from college, the company has grown into one of the most respected audio brands in the world. JL Audio stepped into the marine market in 2005, and in 2016 they introduced the MediaMaster 100 (MM100), which quickly became the high-end source unit of choice for boaters who really care about sound quality. The source unit is where it all starts. It’s the head unit that receives input from your music-playing device and channels it through the amplifiers to the speakers. The source unit is also the dashboard where you control it all. Off the bat, it was apparent JL Audio had designed an exceptional unit, built to stand up to the rigors of sun and salt with all the features expected of a modern sound system. Already known for producing marine amplifiers, speakers and subwoofers of superb quality, JL Audio now had the final piece for a full marine sound system. It was an important step for a brand that values audio quality above all else. “There is nothing else in the marine market like it,” said Alan Wenzel, JL Audio’s VP of business development and strategic planning. “Others may have operating systems with more bells and whistles, but their sound doesn’t come close to ours.” Boaters appreciated the sweet, crisp sound pumping at 4 volts through the RCA jacks. The signal is noticeably clearer than the industry-standard 2-volt output. And the unit’s excellent control flexibility allows for a wide range of zone configurations, which is critical to overcoming the ambient noise of the marine environment. Modern source units are expected to provide connectivity with a host of different devices, and MM100 does this with Bluetooth and USB as well as an analog auxiliary input, so you can even plug in a tape deck and play your old Grateful Dead bootlegs if you want to. unit is SiriusXM ready and includes a built-in AM/FM/Weatherband tuner. It is also NMEA 2000 certified, which means it will communicate with compatible multi-function displays from brands like Simrad, Lowrance, Garmin and more. The physical design of the MM100 is what you would expect from a top-of-the-line piece of marine equipment. It looks cool, and it’s intuitive, with a bright, full-color LCD screen and large, backlit controls that are easy to use while in motion. There’s even the option to add remote controls. What JL Audio launched in 2016 remains the best sounding source unit available. A long list of high-quality boat builders jumped on board to install JL Audio systems standard. “The premier brands are the ones we wanted to partner with,” said Wenzel, “especially the ones that are really conscious of the quality of their product.” The MM100 is a high-end unit designed to drive high-end systems for the kind of control, sound and power demanded by audiophiles. And the price point reflects that. Soon after the release of the MM100, Wenzel said customers began asking for a source unit with built-in power and a more mainstream price point. Not everyone needs to hear the triangle ping in Vivaldi’s Four Seasons across the deck of a sport fishing yacht. In response, JL Audio engineers developed the Media Master 50, which becomes available on the retail market this month. By trimming a few of the bells and whistles off the MM100, JL Audio engineers developed a source unit that has all of the sound quality of its top-of-theline unit, but on a smaller scale, perfect for boats that can get by on two sound zones instead of four. With built-in amplifiers capable of producing 100 watts of high-fidelity output, the MM50 is also NMEA certified and compatible with most everything the MM100 is. And like all JL Audio products, accurate sound reproduction was the No. 1 focus in its design. Wenzel said JL Audio would never release anything that doesn’t meet their stringent criteria for sound quality and durability in the marine environment. This attention to quality is what built the JL Audio brand. “Because we are a true audio company, we know a lot about audio reproduction,” he said. “We do everything we can to exceed the standards. We do thousands of hours of listening testing as well as environmental testing before anything is manufactured.” While most audio companies farm out their designs, JL Audio has dozens of electrical and audio engineers on staff. Their marine speakers, assembled at their Miramar headquarters undergo 2,000 hours of salt and UV testing in onsite environmental chambers, which is four times the industry standard of 500 hours. JL Audio caters to boaters who value sound quality in an onboard sound system. With the MM100 and the MM50, the company now offers the source unit to run the highest quality JL Audio sound systems for any size boat or budget. For more information, visit www.jlaudio.com.

L.L.BEAN CAMPSITE ORGANIZER No meal tastes better than one cooked out in the open around a campfire. However, around the campfire definitely isn’t the easiest place to prepare a meal. When you’re tired of using tree stumps to cook on and plastic bins to store all your gear, it’s time to look into the L.L.Bean Campsite Organizer. This portable outdoor organizer features three interior shelves for storing camp kitchen utensils, picnic gear and grilling tools. It’ll keep your gear in order, and the aluminum top doubles as extremely handy counter space. Open, this 31.5”x25”x20” pantry keeps your food and gear organized and out of the way. Folded down to just 25”x20”x4”, it’s easy to pack for the road. The Campsite Organizer is built of aluminum and 600D polyester fabric with heavy-duty hinges, so it’s tough and lightweight. It comes with its own carrying sack, making it extremely portable. Anyone who has ever spent a few nights in the outdoors knows the joys of a well-organized campsite as well as how quickly a campsite can become a jumbled mess. The Campsite Organizer goes a long way toward creating happy campers.
STORMPROOF SWEETFIRE A blazing fire is integral to the camping experience, and in emergency situations the light and heat of a good fire can save your life. The problem is, emergency situations that require a fire usually come with the same conditions that make lighting a fire difficult. With UCO’s new Stormproof Sweetfire, you’ll never be caught without a fire again—regardless of weather conditions. Stormproof Sweetfire is an entirely new take on tinder. UCO took its eco-friendly Sweetfire Strikeable Fire Starter, which is made from a renewable sugarcane waste product called bagasse, and added a proprietary Stormproof tip to create a product that’s totally reliable, whatever the weather. Stormproof Sweetfire’s unique point shapes come connected and ready to break off, and each has an integrated windproof and waterproof match head. An individual point will burn up to seven minutes, which is enough to get a fire started in any conditions. Whether you’re building a campfire to sit around in the evening or if it’s a fire to stave off hypothermia, you’ll be glad to have Stormproof Sweetfire when it’s wet outside.

POPTICALS POP-OUT SUNGLASSES
Good sunglasses are a necessity whenever you’re spending time outside. On the boat or streamside at a campsite, the gritty dampness of the outdoors combined with poor packing and storage options can wreak havoc on expensive, high-quality lenses. Popticals takes packing and storage issues out of the equation with premium quality and stylish shades that fold down to a compact size to fit into a protective case that is small enough to be slipped in a pocket or clipped to just about anything with an attached carabiner. They are the perfect sunglasses for camping because you’ll never have to worry about them being damaged when they’re not on your face. And when packing space is at a premium, Popticals’ small profile and light weight means they’ll be out of the way yet easily accessible. Featuring NYDEF nylon lenses manufactured for Popticals by Carl Zeiss Vision, Popticals are high-perfomance polarized sunglasses. Nylon offers the same clarity of glass but weighs much less, which makes them more comfortable. Backpackers, who are always looking for ways to shave weight, will appreciate how light they are.

alter had just returned from 30 days in Worcester, Mass., helping insured residents with their claims from the most recent bomb cyclone that hit the region. He and his fishing partner of 25-plus years, Kathy, a Dwyer High School geometry teacher, decided to go trolling for dolphin. They headed out the Lake Worth Inlet at 7 a.m. due east at 7 to 8 mph, trolling a pair of small, naked single-hooked ballyhoo and a tuna feather in their 2001, 25-foot Target with a Yamaha 250. It was a beautiful day on the water, with calm seas and a small ground swell. They were about 16 miles offshore when Walter saw a bill slap at the bait rigged on a 4/0 Penn Offshore Senator, loaded with 30-lb. Ande high-vis line. A school of bait had passed under the boat just moments before. Walter let the line free spool and then set the hook. The fish sounded and peeled off all but about 50 yards of line. Kathy quickly cleared the other lines and went chasing after the fish, while Walter recovered line. The fish came back up and jumped within 300 yards of the boat – a beautiful marlin! It jumped and thrashed about, then sounded again, stripping the reel of line. This time, phone in hand, Kathy chased down the marlin with Walter cranking on the Penn reel giving the Star Rod Deluxe a workout. They were able to pull up alongside the marlin, snapping a few photos in the water, before the marlin would swim away. The next round, the marlin did a triple jump right off the bow of the boat. As the fish arced the vessel, Kathy quickly snapped off several pictures… of herself. She had accidently switched the view of the camera. The struggle continued for four hours, with the marlin circling to the left—Nascar formation, peeling off line and Walter reeling it back in at least 30 times. As the fish would get close enough to see the white bottom of the Target boat, it would stripe up with markings a foot tall. Walter estimated the tail to be at least 4-feet and the marlin to be 10 to 12 feet in length. Kathy took the fight for a brief 15-20 minutes, giving Walter a break. She held her own with the marlin. They had drifted with the current about 26 miles offshore and north when the marlin made one last pass. Walter reeled the line until the swivel was about 3 feet from the tip of the rod when the knot broke. The marlin swam off with a bit of leader and a circle hook. Walter looked at the Ande line. It had stretched to the point that the color changed, but it never broke. That Feb. 17, 2018 will be a fishing trip the Mulfords, of Palm Beach Gardens, will not forget. CA Florida STAR, the state’s largest family friendly saltwater fishing competition, is back with changes that will make the 2018 event the best ever. This 101-day fishing event, presented by Yamaha, is conducted by Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) Florida, the state’s leading organization for marine fisheries conservation, education and advocacy. With more than $500,000 in prizes, the event will run from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. During this timeframe, registered anglers who catch qualifying fish will be eligible for prizes that include a brand new truck or boat, motor and trailer packages to all-terrain vehicles, marine electronics, scholarships and more. Unlike traditional fishing tournaments, STAR focuses on conservation and uses the social media-based event to educate the public on the importance of protecting Florida’s marine resources. The format allows anglers to fish on their own schedule all summer long. A “catch, photo and release” competition, STAR’s smartphone app eliminates the requirement to harvest or capture and transport fish. New details for the 2018 event include: • Kids - Continued free registration for current New Tide Members (CCA members) ages 6 – 17. • Guides - Guides are eligible to compete in their own division for Tagged Redfish and Tagged Dolphin. • Prizes in the Tagged Redfish Division include a Contender 22 Sport, a GMC Sierra, a Pathfinder 2200TRS, a Hewes Redfisher 16, a Carolina Skiff 21 Ultra and Cottonmouth Aluminum Bay/Flats boat, all powered by Yamaha. Prizes for the first two youth anglers in this division include two Carolina Skiff 16JVX CC boats, powered with Yamaha 40 HP motors and trailers. New divisions include: • Tagged Dolphin Division (mahi mahi) - a minimum of 20 tagged dolphin will be released in the state’s waters, with the first registered angler who catches one eligible to win $10,000 in cash or scholarship. • Non-tagged Redfish Division presented by Atlas Jack Plates - even non-tagged redfish are eligible for prizes. • Grouper Division - special prizes for black, gag, red and scamp grouper. • Tarpon Division presented by Humminbird - one winner of a $10,000 prize package will be determined by a random drawing of all catch photos entered in the drawing. Eligibility requirements include proper handling and resuscitation of the catch. Other STAR divisions include: • Youth Scholarship Division presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors - offering over $100,000 in scholarships from Realtree Fishing, Reel Legends Apparel, Southeastern Environmental Solutions, Talk of the Town Restaurant Group and Pasco County Office of Tourism Development. • Power Pole Conservation and Costa Kick Plastic Trash Division - assisting with data collection for potential use in stock and habitat assessment and helping with debris collection. • Lionfish Division - helping with the removal of this invasive species. • Open, Ladies, Fly, Kayak and Professional Guides divisions – targeting various species. Most division winners are determined by a random drawing, a format that encourages participants of all ages to protect and conserve Florida’s fisheries. Register early for an opportunity to win in the weekly Freebie Friday Engel Cooler Drawing! Entry fees are reasonable at $75 for non-CCA members and include a one-year membership. Entry is $40 for current CCA members. For more information on STAR or to register, visit the organization’s Facebook page or ccaflstar.com.

Bring the Heat
By Cory Gurman
S
chool is almost out, and the heat of summer is right around the corner. So what does this mean for catching fish during the summertime? Depending on your target species, you might have to slightly change your techniques to stay on top of the fish. Bass fishing during the summer can be hit and miss sometimes, but their higher metabolism coupled with the shad spawn will likely help you out with catching some nice fish. With so many waterways that hold bass, it doesn’t take much effort to make a quick trip to a nearby pond. South Florida’s Sammy Suarez, 14, started fishing a couple of years ago and has been honing her skills at catching both largemouth and peacock bass out of local canals and golf course ponds.
During the summer months, she and her dad catch really nice fish in the early mornings and late afternoons using a topwater lure like the Rebel Pop R and popping it at a medium speed. The fish in these canals and ponds regularly approach 5 pounds and sometimes exceed that. Another thing that happens during the summer is the increased growth of vegetation, which in turn brings out frogs in big numbers. To match the hatch, I like to throw a Booyah Pad Crasher at any weeds or vegetation I see and start a slow retrieve. When the bass blows up on it, make sure not to set the hook right away. Wait a second to make sure he has it, and bury the hook. There are also plenty of saltwater opportunities in the summer, speckled sea trout being one of my favorites. Finding the right place to fish for them and understanding their preferred hunting grounds is essential in securing a delicious meal. Trout are ambush feeders, which means they like to be still and attack prey as it swims by. Grass, rocks, oyster bars and docks all make for great structure where trout stage, waiting for a meal. The presence of current is important, since it is what pushes baitfish through the structure where trout are lying ready to ambush. If these two elements—current and structure—line up, you are in a good place to fish for trout. Live shrimp under a popping cork, jig heads tipped with a soft plastic and topwater lures are all good choices. Trout tend to bite better on overcast days, especially if you’re using topwater lures. Remember to try and match the hatch with whatever baitfish you are seeing in the area. These fisheries will surely make it worthwhile to get out and soak up some rays this summer, as well as to enjoy a fun family outing during the most relaxing season of the year in the great outdoors. Cory Gurman is a freshman at Ponte Vedra High School in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Besides reveling in the great outdoors, Cory enjoys spending time with his three golden retrievers and rooting for the Atlanta Braves. Follow him on Instagram @fishhunter1119.

each camping is an easy and fun way to spend time with family. I am fortunate to live about an hour from the beach, and each summer we take advantage of our close proximity. It’s a great place to fish, swim, sit by the campfire… and do it all over again the next day. The key to a great time is preparation. I like to gear up for two types of fishing: trout and larger game. I bring light trout tackle for throwing lures in the morning and evening. I always have a few top-
waters and slow-sinking hard baits, a ¾-oz. silver spoon and a select few slow-sinking soft plastics. I also like to bring some larger surf tackle for throwing live or cut bait at night for bull reds and sharks. A cast net is always good to have for when schools of bait are within range. A good tip if you decide to catch or buy live bait is to bring something along to tie your bait bucket to and leave it in the surf. We typically have a breeze to keep the bugs somewhat at bay, but always bring your repellant and long sleeves to keep you comfortable. When it comes to the kids, I always ask them what they want to bring for fun and food. I don’t skimp on either of these, and I usually go overboard to make sure we all have a great time. We also love the campfire, so I always bring ample amounts of wood. It can be tough, if not impossible, to find on the beach. To combat the hassle of starting a fire in the wind, I like to use readyto-light charcoal. This saves time and aggravation. I place a full bag of it on the bottom and build up the fire wood around it. Always bring a shovel to dig a pit, as this helps contain the fire and it also protects it from the wind. A pit also allows you to quickly bury the evidence of your fire when you’re done. This keeps our beaches looking pristine, and in Texas we are allowed to drive on many beaches. Covering up your hole is important so that no one accidentally drives into it. Lastly, we all know the down side of beachgoing is bringing the sand home. One thing I started doing a few years ago with my boys is to fill a large 120-quart cooler with warm water. When it’s time to get cleaned up, they jump in, have a warm comfortable bath and clean up. They absolutely love it! Warm water is around the corner, get out and enjoy with your family! Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

aiting at home for a phone call, running to the mailbox for news from a friend, scanning the Yellow Pages for a plumber—these artifacts from the pre-Internet days are laughable activities in today’s era of technology. When was the last time you replaced the tape in your answering machine or the ribbon in your typewriter? So in this modern age, why would anyone look to a tour book with old information for advice on planning a fishing trip? For unknown reasons, all the tour books for Costa Rica list the high season for fishing as November to April. At FishingNosara we get calls from clients all the time regarding the best time of year to come fishing in Costa Rica. The truth is the fishing here is fairly consistent year-round. After all, fish eat every day. But, armed with an out-of-date tour book, these callers insist that summer is no good. To counter these misconceptions, FishingNosara maintains photographic evidence to the contrary at blog.FishingNosara.com as well as on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Let’s take a glance back at the last few years of fishing in the month of May and prove the tour books wrong. In May 2017, angler Roger Chambers fished for a week in Nosara and closed out the campaign with a four-species day. They had an early roosterfish release, then Capt. William of the Wanderer got a call on the radio from Capt. Carlos on the Discoverer reporting a kettle of yellowfin tuna offshore. The mid-afternoon bite led to dorados and yellowfin tuna on ice for Team Chambers. The final score of the day was a Sailfish release. In May 2016, the Harvester welcomed Ken Richmond and his group of hard-fishing Texans and caught a true fish of a lifetime with a massive 400-plus-pound blue marlin. Also, the 26-foot Explorer scored an 80-plus-pound floor-sweeping wahoo, several nice sailfish and a half-dozen roosterfish releases. Likewise, big cubera snapper were abundant on the 23-foot Adventurer, and the 32-foot Wanderer scored some trips with double-digit sailfish releases. May is also a great time for honeymoons. Newlyweds Daniel and Vicky Martinko scored a mammoth wahoo, a beautiful roosterfish and lots of sailfish during their 2015 trip. In May 2015, the Discoverer brought the house down with a billfish grand slam on May 10. Client Tony King and his group scored a striped marlin estimated around 200 pounds and a larger blue marlin estimated at more than 350 pounds. They added a sailfish to the scorecard to round-out a legendary day of fishing. We have video of the grand slam catches on the FishingNosara blog, which proves—regardless of what the tour book says—that Costa Rica’s fishing is consistently good… no matter the season. Visit blog.FishingNosara.com for current photos, video and reports on the action.

xpect good things this month, especially as the winds lighten up. The best days will be the first and third weeks of May, so make sure to check your tide charts for moving water. Snook seem to be everywhere and should continue to bite. Good tidal grass flats, passes or cuts from upper Tampa Bay all the way to Sarasota will prove productive. Live baiters; remember to use caution when chumming with greenbacks, too much and you’ll just end up feeding the fish instead of chumming them to the boat. Nose-hooked, free lined greenbacks always do the trick along with a few dead baits on the bottom. Of course artificial lures are always fun as well. Speckled trout should continue to improve, especially as bait moves onto the flats. Look
for grass flats with plenty of sandy potholes. Remember, potholes are usually holding plenty of trout and often produce the good sized ones. Frequently schools of trout will gather around the large sandy area, if you’re lucky enough not to spook them you can catch plenty using small popping corks, shrimp, or free lined greenbacks. Occasionally, you can find some really nice trout in deeper rocky bottoms. Redfish should start settling in for the summer. Check your favorite oyster bars, mangrove cuts and broken bottom grass flats on the last of an outgoing tide and the first of an incoming. Don’t forget large schools of mullet as redfish follow and feed inside of them. Live greenbacks and crabs are effective, cut bait also produces.
C o b i a should start cruising the grass flats and markers looking to eat just about anything tossed in their direction. You’ll find them following rays and manatees, and often traveling in groups of two or more. Be prepared with enough tackle and bait for multiple hookups. Threadfin herring throughout Tampa Bay usually means the Spanish and blues are here, and they should be in full swing this month. There have been reports of some fish weighing in at three to five pounds. Chum them up with fresh cut threadfins or greenbacks, send one up current on a free-line with at least 50# Seaguar leader and a Daiichi long shank silver 2/0 hook and hold on. Tarpon are showing up around the Skyway with a few on the beach. They should move inside during the summer around deeper flats. Expect plenty of
activity by month’s end and on through the summer. Try freelining threadfins, greenbacks or small crabs. elcome back Yak fans. Summer is really here... MAYBE, and the patterns will be going into the warmer water cycles. But, before that, I want to share a recent trip with you. I was on a charter with Mike from Idaho for a day’s fishing in Northern Hernando County. The day started out with bad news. I learned that one of my favorite put-ins on Pine Island Drive was soon to be shut down. This due to the homeowner (who, by the way, is a friend of mine) telling me that he was fed up with people driving through his yard and blocking the road. You might imagine that this pissed me off, since I’m the only one that has permission from him and the home owners’ association to put in there. And, although there is room for maybe four cars, there were no less than ten idiots parked along the narrow roadway. Thanks guys, rant done, back to fishing; however, the put-in is like a fishing spot--if somebody is already there, then go somewhere else. So, with that wonderful news, we set out. We had a good time working through the marsh with reds, trout, black drum, and sheepshead making an appearance. Mike hooked into a nice red in the skinny water on my favorite Zara spook Junior (in bone), of course. But, the real surprise of the day came as we worked our way back about a half-mile in shore, to a spring I know. I sent Mike down the feeder creek to search out a snook and I waited there, as the Creek was a little narrow for two. Soo... as I sat there I thought, what the heck. I anchored on the edge of the spring and dropped a shrimp down to see if anybody was home, put the rod in the rod holder and turned to see how Mike was doing and wham, my seven foot light Fenwick rod with 10 pound test bent double. Grabbing the rod and wondering what the heck was
on the other end, I felt him find the dead tree that we know is down there--now I’m snagged up (Great!). Well, I put the rod back in the rod holder opened the bail, pulled up the anchor which pulled me a good 10 feet back from the hole, paddled to the other side of the spring and started to pull. I felt a little thunk, thunk, and realized I’d gotten free from the tree; but, I thought there’s no way that fish is still there. As I took in the slack, suddenly it was game on all over again. Now I’m doing the fisherman’s prayer,” please just let me see what it is”! Please lol I’m thinking okay, this isn’t a black drum and it sure doesn’t act like a redfish, maybe a monster Sheepshead, but it sure acts like a..... Nah it can’t be, I’m a half-mile inshore. As I started to gain some ground, Mike came paddling back and says “whatta you got?” By now, I’m pretty sure I know; but, I’m not going to jinx myself. So, I say I’m not sure. I finally got it to the boat and, sure enough, it’s a nearly 24 inch goliath grouper. I’ll tell you what, that’s a powerful fish! The hook was deep in the cartilage of his upper mouth, which is why I didn’t lose him to the tree; but, how the line didn’t snap, I’ll never know. As I pulled him in to get the hook out, we snapped some pictures and I thought great story. Then I thought, protected species, not to be removed from the water. I felt like maybe if I shared these pictures, I might as well put my face on the wall of the post office. I had visions of an FWC guy coming in and saying nice story, great pictures. Please sign this ticket right here. Ouch! But, a quick call to our FWC, let me know that as long as I was just removing the hook and grabbed a couple of pictures. I was okay. Right officer Alan Pierce? And thanks for your help. Also, the cobia are ready to make their appearance soon; hopefully, more on that next month! The grouper was too much fun, and swam away to play another day. Bruce Butler “Stumbling Gypsy” (352) 428-5347 Bruce@IndianBayOutfitters.com www.IndianBayOutfitters.com

f you have never felt the rush of a 100 pound class tarpon after you’ve set the hook and he starts blazing drag, then you really should head down the Dunedin Causeway, Honeymoon or Caladesi Islands this month and make it happen! Every year around this time thousands of tarpon make their annual migration up the coast toward the panhandle and spend lots of time along our beaches looking for something to eat. While they love live pass or blue crabs, they’ll also take live pinfish, threadfin herring or mullet and even big fresh cut baits soaked on the bottom. While it sometimes helps to have a light boat equipped with a fast trolling motor to position yourself ahead of the oncoming pods of fish, tarpon can be sighted and targeted right from the beach or bridge. The trick is to be out there right at sunrise to watch for rollers, once boat traffic starts picking up they will disappear. Year in and year out rolling tarpon can be seen right along the Causeway beaches and moving through the bridge passes, as well as the gulf beaches on Honeymoon and Caladesi. The sandbars at the south end of Honeymoon and north end of Caladesi make great spots to ambush fish. You’ll need some stout tackle if you want to land one of these bruisers. A seven to eight-foot medium heavy rod equipped with a quality 6000 to 8000 pound class spinning reel spooled with 30 to 50 pound test braided line will do the trick. Use six feet of 50 to 80 pound test fluorocarbon leader and an eight to ten-ought razor sharp j-hook or circle hook to complete the outfit. Tarpon have very boney mouths so every hook should be sharpened to a
needle point. The trick with this type of fishing is to spot the fish at some distance off and present your bait right along their line of travel. When using live baits, it’s best to hang them five or six feet under a big bobber or balloon. Big cut baits like mullet or bonito should be fished on the bottom, so a few ounces of lead are needed to keep the bait down. I like to leave the bail of my real open until I feel a fish moving away with my bait. I’ll let him run off about 20 or thirty yards of line before closing the bail and setting the hook. Most hooked tarpon are lost before landing because of poor hook sets, this is where those sharpened hooks really pay off. Just remember not to tighten your drag too much and let the fish run until you wear him out. Remember that it’s illegal to drag your fish into the boat or up on the sand. Keep the worn-out fish in the water and get all the pictures you want. Barracuda Bob’s is your sportfishing headquarters on the Dunedin Causeway and is the big yellow building on the right as you’re heading towards the water. We carry everything you might need to enjoy a day of productive fishing, no matter your targeted species. Our knowledgeable crew is happy to help you get rigged up with the right gear and baits to bust the big one; we’ll even tell you where the fish are biting! ome say that Tampa Bay has the largest population of sharks and the biggest variety of sharks in the world. Ana Banana Fishing Company has worked closely with Mote Marine Center for Shark Research, USF Marine Laboratories and Cornell University Marine Biology Department. We’ve provided marine biologists with whole shark samples, fin samples, fluid dynamic studies and tagging programs recording shark size, sex, species, catch location and shark condition recordings for breeding habits and migration. We focus on shark preservation and conservation. A large part of preserving and conserving shark populations is influenced by understanding them better through research. Baitfish flow into the bay from the gulf this time of year, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, jack crevalle, ladyfish, blue runners and bonita rush into the bay hot on their tail, and kingfish,
tarpon, cobia and goliath grouper gather to feed on everything. This frenzied food chain causes a lot of carnage which gets the attention of sharks. Sharks are at the top of the food chain, they are the clean-up crew. We like to target sharks this time of year because they are plentiful, they fight hard, many anglers are intrigued by them and they’re good table fare. Legally you can harvest two sharks per day per boat with different size limits depending on which species of shark you are catching. Some sharks we target for the fight only, these sharks are tail gaffed with a lasso cable gaff. Sharks that we catch and release only are hammerheads, tigers and bull sharks. Sharks that we target for eating are blacktips, bonnetheads, reef sharks, Atlantic sharpnose, lemon sharks and nurse sharks. We have found a lot of weird things in the stomachs of sharks, although we’ve never found license tags or shoes or wrenches like in the movie Jaws. We have found horseshoe crabs, seahorses, stingrays, catfish, birds, eels, sea turtles, lobsters, squid; we’ve even found other sharks! The first time we ever realized sharks are cannibals was during a 24 hour blacktip tournament we held to benefit the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation hosted by baseball hall of fame legend Wade Boggs. At about midnight we had a few shark lines
out baited with ladyfish heads and one of the rods bent over and the drag started screaming. Wade picked up the rod and started fighting the shark, all at once the rod went limp, nothing but dead weight. What he reeled up was half of a juvenile blacktip; the shark was cut clean in half leaving us with only the head and upper torso. I removed the half of the shark from the hook and was about to toss the carcass overboard when Wade suggested that we re-hook the shark half and cast it back out. We did and we ended up catching a 79 inch blacktip that was not only the tournament winning shark, but also the new tournament record. Up until that point I had no idea that sharks ate sharks, but since that night I have found a few sharks in the bellies of bigger sharks. If you want the fight of your life with a serious gamefish, come to Tampa Bay and catch a shark with us. If you’re interested in harvesting a shark to eat, we offer a hook n’ cook program at Hooks at Little Harbor Resort. ne of the first things I learned at an early age from my uncle Manuel was his techniques and his knowledge of fishing. At the age of five years and a few months, he took me under his wing; he was only 18 at the time but had already acquired more knowledge about fishing Tampa Bay than most anglers twice his age. About a year into our adventures he decided to expand the boundaries, that summer we started fishing Gasparilla Island. Back then there were no bridges to the island, only a ferry. I remember the last ferry left at 8 p.m. on Friday nights. We missed it several times when the traffic on US 41, then a single lane highway, would backup for miles around Sarasota. We would have to spend the night fishing the old railroad bridge that carried supplies until the next ferry arrived at 8 a.m. We used to camp on the shoreline within sight of the old phosphate pier that extended into Boca Grande Pass, it was a beautiful sight at night, it’s lights looked more like a ship in the distance gliding into the pass. Fishing was not allowed on the pier except on weekends. No ships docked and at night the guards would let us fish until daybreak in exchange for some of our catch or sometimes for a bottle of rum. We would catch huge redfish up to 40 inches long; snook, grouper, flounder and mangrove snappers were common occurrences during the winter months. At any given time you could hook up with a goliath grouper that many times exceeded two hundred pounds. During the day we fished for mackerel, trout and
small redfish along the shoreline and island side of the railroad bridge. Part of the learning experience was camping and cooking our catch. If my mother had ever known or found out some of my many experiences I had with my uncle, it would have ended my fishing career. In the winter of 1952 Uncle Manuel received an invitation from Uncle Sam, then known as the draft board, to spend some time in the Army. My adventures were put on hold until his return, but my love for fishing continues today. Unfortunately my uncle passed away a couple of years ago to be in the big fish pond with God and all his fishing buddies. Fishing takes no special skills and is one of the few sports anyone can participate in from young to old. FLATS TO NEARSHORE REPORT BY: CAPT. GARY BURCH
I
t’s that time of year when almost every species of fish along the west coast of Florida is on the catching menu. May brings us late spring and early summer conditions where water temperatures are in the low 80’s and all of our saltwater piscatorial friends are willing and eager to play. Whether you fish in the shallow bays for redfish or trout, in the passes for snook or along the coast for kingfish, mackerel, cobia or tarpon, there will be something for everyone. I will be concentrating on snook and redfish for most of my clients, so here are some starting points for May’s fishing action. Redfish will continue to be found scattered throughout the bays and flats of Clearwater and Dunedin. Locating them may take some time so keep moving. Search along the mangrove shorelines at high tides, under docks and don’t forget the spoil islands inside the bays. Live shrimp and white baits will be the bait of choice. If you are an artificial guy, redfish will attack topwater and suspended hard baits, various size plastic tails in root beer and motor oil colors and the old standby, gold spoons. Snook will be found in all of the passes from Anclote Key in Tarpon Springs to the Egmont Channel in lower Tampa Bay. Target them just inside the passes and in the shallows
and cuts that lead to the passes. These fish will be feeding when the tide is moving, some anglers prefer the incoming tide and some the outgoing, just make sure the water is moving for best results. For summertime snook the best bait by far is a free lined live sardine. Let the sardine do his thing and it shouldn’t take long until Mrs. Linesider comes calling. When she eats the bait, hold on for a wild ride. Remember to release all snook; there is no harvesting at this time. My clients will be fishing for the west coast Slam in May. A snook, redfish and trout in the same day constitutes the slam. We caught many slams last May and I’m looking forward to the challenge again. There are so many great fish to catch in May; you have to find the time. As a wellknown old captain once said, “If you are too busy to go fishing, then you are just too busy”. Capt. Gary Burch owns and operates All Catch Charters and specializes in live baits and artificials. He guides inshore, flats and backcountry from Clearwater to Tarpon Springs. To reach Capt. very year we all struggle with showing our mothers how important they are and how much we love them, right? Flowers, candy and brunches are all great, but let’s think outside the box this year and really hit a home run. To permanently secure your status as the favorite child take mom to the Plantation on Crystal River for the best Mother’s Day weekend ever! Travel back in time when family trips were fun, everyone was together, there was a lot to do and it didn’t break the bank. On the Nature Coast you can swim with manatees, take a river cruise, fish, go to the spa or go golfing, and when the season opens you can go scalloping as well. If you can’t go right now, gift certificates are available. If you are more inclined to head south, then go to Sanibel Island for the shopping, quiet beaches and great dining. My favorite place to stay is the historic beachfront resort Island Inn; it really is old Florida. They have great rooms and beach cottages and it really takes you away from the hustle and bustle of things. Sanibel Island is a bike friendly place with great bike trails and paths that will take you right to the Ding Darlin Nature Preserve. The Inn also offers tennis, kayaks, shell cleaning stations, a library, lounge and barbeque grills so that you can grill up a great sunset dinner. Mom know that you love her every month. Get your mother involved in a club, such as dessert of the month, coffee and chocolate of the month, cheese club, cupcake club, breakfast club, and my personal favorite knife of the month club. There is one thing that I need to mention that you cannot buy, it goes by fast, it’s priceless and it is also free; time. The thing that all Moms want from their kids is time, which is something that we tend to overlook in our busy lives. Spending precious time with our Moms and loved ones is something that cannot be replaced with a trip, gift or fancy brunch. I like to spend time with my kids in the outdoors because that is who we are, find out who your Mom is and what she likes to do. Make Mother’s Day Great Again.

FRESHWATER FISHING REPORT
LAKE ALFRED, AUBURNDALE, WINTER HAVEN AREAS BY: RON SCHELFO
N
ow is the time to get out and beat the summer heat! The months of May and June will be very good for bass, bluegill and shell crackers. Great reports are coming in citing large fish and limits on bluegills and crackers. Currently our best reporting lakes are Lakes Rochelle and Haines in Lake Alfred and also Lakes Shipp, Howard and Cannon on the South Winter Haven Chain. The baits of choice at this time are live red worms and crickets. We are in prime bass fishing season here in central Florida, get out now before the hot weather sets in. For some really great fishing, our best reporting areas are Lakes Alfred, Rochelle and Haines in the North Winter Haven Chain and Lakes Shipp, Cannon and Summit in the South Winter Haven Chain. Our recommendation for attracting the largest bass continues to be Bass Assassin boss shiner swimbaits. Other proven winners are Heddon chugin spooks and Booyah frogs in assorted colors. Topwater fishing is on fire, we are seeing many bass in the four to eight pound range. Polk County is blessed with 554 fantastic lakes,
come out and take advantage of them! Remember to always catch and release fish over 16 inches unless you’re cooking them, we have to work together to protect and preserve our lakes and fish population. The enclosed photo shows 1st Place winners, Josh Heard and A.J. Schuh displaying several of their beautiful bass (total 15 pounds/2.75 ounces) caught on Lake Alfred at the first Ron’s Tackle Box Weekly Bass Tournament on Thursday, April 5th. The 20th season of Ron’s Tackle Box Weekly Bass Tournaments is in full swing! Weekly registration is $30.00 per boat for a one or two man team. The tournaments run from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. each Thursday through the end of October. Prizes are awarded for the largest bass as well as 1st, 2nd and3rd place categories. The location each week is not revealed until Thursday mornings and is announced in “The Ledger” and on our Facebook page. Of course, you may always call Ron at (863) 956-4990 for tournament information and fishing reports. Our tournaments are all around great fun, come out and join us! THE MAGICAL MONTH OF MAY BY: CAPT. MIKE ANDERSON
The Fisherman’s Candy Store
M
ay is the magical month where spring and summer collide, big bait schools are present all along the west coast of Florida and the tarpon, kingfish, Spanish mackerel, bonita, permit, snook and cobia all come alive. For tarpon most anglers have their best luck along the beaches. A quiet, stealthy presentation is a must. There are few things more exciting in the angling world than the strike, jump and fight of a big tarpon in 8-10 feet of crystal clear water. I recommend using your trolling motor or a push pole if you have one to get the boat into position as quietly as possible. A nose hooked threadfin herring; pilchard or a half dollar sized crab free lined or under a cork positioned in front of the school will have a good shot at getting bit. Remember to lead the fish slightly so the bait can settle into the strike zone ahead of the fish getting there. Your tackle choices will be critical to your success if you hope to actually land the silver king! Rods in the 40-50 pound class are a must with a quality back bone and firm tip. Large spinning reels are a must as well; you’ll need the entire drag surface you can find to win the battle. I use the Quantum Cabo 80’s for best results. You’ll need 50 to 65 pound braided line with a 50 to 80 pound fluorocarbon leader. For kingfish wire leaders are recommended if slow trolling areas of hard bottom, but you can anchor up and chum as well. When
anchored up I use long shank hooks with a 50 pound fluorocarbon leader or a six inch piece of #6 wire. You will get some cut offs, but on days I’m looking for steady action and kings, this works better to also get the Spanish mackerel and bonita to the boat. Snook fishing will peak this month all along Florida’s west coast beaches. Live pilchards, threadfins or grunts will all work well as will a frisky pinfish. May is one of the best months to catch your snook of a lifetime, but remember to get a quick pic and then right back in the water as these beauties are essential to a sustainable snook fishery for years to come. May is certainly a magical month indeed so enjoy! ansom R. Olds was an early citizen of what is now Oldsmar. He was the founder of the REO and Oldsmobile companies; his civic work was instrumental in the molding of the city. Before the bridges were built spanning Tampa Bay, Oldsmar was a very well trafficked city; anyone traveling to Pinellas County made their way through the city. The majority of the parks of Oldsmar are on the shores of Old Tampa Bay and Mobbly Bayou. REO Olds Park, Veterans Memorial Park and Mobbly Bayou Wilderness Preserve are definitely standout recreation areas. Between the three, there are many fishing environments,
the flats, a pier, mangroves and docks all make for good fishing. These parks provide easy access for land based, wade and kayak fishing. The bottoms of these waters are sandy and/or muddy, there is not a lot of sea grass, and this makes for great red fishing. There are plenty of mullet on the flats, just cast into them, unfortunately in this scenario the catfish are also not far behind. Bait and Tackle stores are not an issue; they are just minutes away on Hillsborough Avenue and at the Oldsmar Flea Market. There are so many great parks in our area, get out and scout!

HERNANDO COUNTY FISHERMAN’S CHOICE
BY: CAPT. JOEL GANT
I
believe the worst of the winds are left behind in April. Just about every species in our area is hungry and ready to bite. If you fish offshore or inshore this is the time to get out and fish. With the weather stabilizing, the fish are now starting to get into their spring/summer patterns. Offshore species like kingfish, cobia, grouper,
Spanish mackerel, grunts and snappers are abundant. When bottom fishing for grouper, put out a free lined live bait for the hard hitting, line screaming kingfish or keep an eye out for the curious cobia. I like to use a 6000 series reel with 30 pound braided line and about three to six feet of leader. For kingfish you might want to use a steel leader or stinger rig. You can also troll with a diving plug or a spoon. Try not to have your drag too tight, these fish will hit hard and test your drag. Inshore, speckled trout can be caught in the three to six foot grass areas and around the rocks off channels. Use lighter tackle like 10 pound test with a quarter ounce jig and either a jerkbait or Gulp shrimp. I also like to use a Rapala twitch rap subsurface bait or a topwater lure.
We Buy Boats We Sell Boats Trades Accepted
Redfish can be caught around structure. Look for mullet or any movement in the water. Artificial baits, fresh cut bait or live shrimp should produce a bite once you find them. Bluefish and Spanish mackerel are thick around the rock piles, using chum will bring them in. I like to use a quarter ounce jig with a zoom jerkbait for them. Work the lure very fast or with erratic jigging up and down. If you get a hit and miss, keep working the bait or they will move out. We have been getting some nice sharks on recent trips. With the water warming, I expect to see even more. I like to chum first then use some kind of fresh cut bait, remember to use heavy tackle and a steel leader. Get out on the water and make some memories with friends and family! I’m always looking for reports and pictures. You can email me or stop by my website and become a “FISHHEAD”. Capt. any consider the mighty tarpon to be the ultimate catch in the waters of Tampa Bay. Tarpon flood the bay from May through late August every year as they prepare to spawn. They can be caught by boaters, bridge and pier anglers and even wade fishing or from the beach. Tarpon will take a variety of baits and lures. They feed on live baits like pinfish and pass crabs free lined or under a bobber. They will also take threadfins or whitebait fished the same way. However, other days they want cut bait like shad and threadfins free lined in a chum slick. When and where you fish will dictate what baits or techniques to use. Fishing the bridges
or passes you will find that free lined baits work best. Feed out the line and keep your bait flowing with the current, if the line is tight the tarpon won’t bite. Whitebait and cut baits work best in these areas. The Skyway Bridge is a popular spot that will produce multiple fish days for boaters and pier fishermen. Off the beach fishing with crabs under a float works well; whitebait or pinfish also produce. Remember to have a pitch rod ready for any rolling fish. Popular beach areas are off any of the passes, Egmont Key and the Anna Maria area. If you’re going to fish at night, Tampa Bay bridges like the Gandy, Dick Misner, 10 Cent Bridge, and the Skyway provide especially hot action at night in the shadow lines of the bridge lights. Tarpon will hit swimbaits and jigs readily in this scenario, fish lures in the one to three ounce range, you can’t go wrong with white. Work the lures against the tide and hold on! A word of warning to the boaters- if you see a group of boats drifting an area DO NOT anchor in their drift zone, you will ruin it for everyone, just pony up in line and join the fun. Tarpon tackle consists of spinning gear in the 6000 size range and conventional gear of 10-30 class reels on seven to eight foot 20-40
pound class rods. Load the reels with 30-60 pound braid depending on where you fish, type of tackle and your skill level. Attach five to six feet of 60 pound fluorocarbon leader and a 6/0 circle hook and you’re in business. If you’re lucky enough to land a tarpon early in the day this is a great time of year to go for a grand slam- a tarpon, snook, redfish and trout all in one day. The flats are on fire with both baitfish and the predators feeding on them. Now is the time to take advantage of the hot bite before the heat gets too hot!!! What makes our charter service unique is that we cater to disabled veterans and wheel chair bound clients! Our boat is able to accommodate wheelchairs and is ADA compliant. ay is well known for its pleasant mornings and warm afternoons on the water. Generally speaking, much of the usual boat traffic from anglers and guides has shifted from their favorite snook and redfish fishing spots to chasing the tarpon around the beaches and larger passes. Because of this, these fish are less pressured and so fish will be more willing to chew. During the month of May I have found that periods of tide change produce larger fish. The mornings and evenings will be more productive as the water temperature will be lower. A few go to places for snook and redfish this month are Riviera Bay, Bayou Grande, Pinellas Point and Fort De Soto, including the area surrounding Tarpon Key. On rising and high tides snook and redfish will be abundant on and around mangrove points, oyster bars and the occasional sandbar. When fishing these areas I recommend free-lining live or cut scaled sardines within the target area. The addition of a few split-shots may be necessary to keep baits in the specific location during stronger tides. The phrase “match the hatch” is a tried and true method used to select the proper bait for fishing any given area. The waterways of Saint Petersburg are filled with scaled sardines, also known as
greenbacks or white bait. These little silver bullets are candy for snook and redfish, but also hold their reputation for catching trout on any given day. Scaled sardines can be caught by throwing a cast net or buying at a few small bait shops. I recommend catching enough bait to use for fishing as well as a few extra to throw as chum. You will be able to find these baitfish at channel markers and shallow to deep transition areas nearest boat channels. I use a 10 foot 3/8 mesh Humpback cast net to gather my bait. I can usually catch enough bait for a trip in one or two casts because of the ease of opening in the net design. Another species of fish to keep an eye out for this month are Spanish mackerel. Spanish mackerel are a huge summertime favorite and can be found where ever bait fish congregate in high numbers. A favorite spot of mine and many anglers is the main span of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Whether fishing from a boat or the pier located directly next to the bridge, using a silver spoon with some wire leader on fast retrieve or a free-lined sardine should do the trick. PASCO COUNTY HELLO SPRING FISHING!
BY: CAPT. BOBBY CARROLL
T
he bite has been nothing short of excellent in April and I can only see it getting better. Trout have been very aggressive at Paul Fleming from sunrise smashing FPN Outdoors with any and everything that passes by them. a perfect 26 3/4 inch Throw your favorite redfish caught on the topwater baits slick during a local around oyster bars tournament with me. and you’re sure to get an explosion. It has been very easy to get 15-20 topwater hits within the first hour or two of sunrise. Once you notice it starting to slow down on top, switch to a jig, I prefer an eighth of an ounce so I can keep it a little bit higher in the water column. As for live bait, don’t worry if you can’t get white bait, load up on two to three inch pinfish and set them under a bobber. Redfish have been the bread and butter this spring. Just like I said with not needing white bait for trout, you don’t need it for reds either. I have found reds in schools of up to a 100 and oftentimes half of the school will eat before they catch on that their friends are coming
back with sore lips! A tail hooked pinfish free lined under the mangroves has been the ticket. As for the artificial angler, eighth of an ounce jigs rigged with your favorite paddle tail or fluke bounced through a mullet school has seemed to really have these fish wanting to chew. Another bait that I’m a huge fan of is a bait called “the slick”. In my opinion the slick is the deadliest low tide bait for reds, it’s a bait rigged weedless on an owner 4/0 beast hook. The offering is presented by making very long casts and giving light twitches, the reds see it as an injured baitfish and crush it 90 percent of the time without hesitation. Snook have fully come back from our 20122013 freeze, and they have attitude! There have been tons of snook caught ranging from 20 inches up to the 34 inch mark the past couple months. I feel that it’s going to be an amazing bite all throughout the summer. White bait is a little more crucial to use for snook unlike the redfish and trout, if you get the bait, you’ll get the snook! Target snook in areas that have three things: current, structure and ambush points. Target snook as early as you can in the morning because the bite slows up the later it gets in the
day. Snook seem to be a little more finicky midday compared to reds and trout. Snook will eventually move out from the mangroves and docks to go to their breeding grounds. While one can still catch plenty of snook during this time, I ask that you please handle them with care and to get them back into the water as soon as possible. The redfish will try and stay in the shade during the hotter days to come, once the water gets to the mid80s and beyond you will have to give them a little more time before they eat. The bigger trout will move to deeper waters in the next few months, but that still won’t stop you from catching your limit for a family fish fry! here is no better time to become an extraordinary angler. Passion, time, and commitment are the key ingredients in making this happen. Unlike days past, everything you need to research is just a “mouse click” away. Inexpensive, reliable fishing equipment is available if you know where to look. There are also numerous experienced anglers willing to share their time and wisdom. If you can only get out on the water once every couple of months and want to catch fish, the best way to do this is by hiring a guide. On the other hand, if you have made fishing a priority and have the time, becoming a great angler is well within your reach. You do not need a shiny new, flats boat, you do not need the newest, “high speed” fishing equipment. Ingenuity, networking, and proper etiquette are a great start. Purchasing the right fishing equipment is an
integral part of being an exceptional angler, this doesn’t mean it has to be expensive. There are always anglers selling equipment on Facebook clubs, forums, and swap meets. Do your homework first, ask questions, read reviews, and if possible, use someone else’s equipment before making your decision. You need to have a good idea of the type fishing that interests you the most before making this investment. Remember, a brand-new piece of equipment may not be your wisest choice. Top quality, used fishing gear can be serviced at a nominal cost and can last for a very long time. Lesser quality, new gear, may not be worth the cost of servicing if you have a problem with it. The amount of knowledge that can be gained from the internet is limitless. Anything you need to know about “your” type of fishing can be obtained through video’s or “one on one” interactions with other anglers in fishing clubs and forums. From tying knots to moon phases, topwater to dead sticking, it’s all there. This wealth of knowledge is not worth a thing unless it is intertwined with days, months, years, of actual time on the water. This is all part of becoming a better angler, also known as “paying dues”. Networking with other individuals is one of the most important and rewarding factors in
becoming a good angler. For this to be successful, you have to know how important these people are to you. If someone invites you to fish with them, remember, this person could be a mentor for life, or your new best friend. For you to make these trips successful, you will need to use your common sense and be on your best behavior. There are courtesies that should be followed, be it fishing from land, wade, or boat. It is your responsibility to know these rules to ensure the possibility of going out the next time. The easiest way to gain this knowledge is to just ask the person you are going out with. Just remember, being invited out with an experienced angler can be better than any research that you have already done. To become an extraordinary angler also means to be willing to go your own way, research, scout, and fish new areas. Learn how to read the water and the environment, make every trip a learning experience. In doing all of this, someday you will be that guy or gal inviting a “newbie” out to learn and love the passion we call fishing. Special thanks to angler Mark Danner. Paul Presson, outdoor writer and published cartoonist. He has fished the coastlines of Tampa Bay for 28 years, land based, wade, kayak and by flats boat. If he is not writing, he is out on the water!

DON’T GET CONFUSED WITH TOO MANY KNOTS BY: CAPT. WOODY GORE
L
ook at any magazine or internet fishing site and you’ll find enough information about knots that it can boggle the mind of the most serious angling individual. With the thousands of knots available today anglers put too much emphasis on knowing how to tie them all. Regardless of the type of fishing you’re doing, at best you probably only need a few to make it happen. Just learning to tie the knots that directly relate to your style of fishing will have you set. For example, with all my fishing I basically use only three knots; these are the Yucatan (for leader to braid), Loop Knot (for hooks and lures) and the Double-Uni Knot (for braid to braid). Once in a great while I might use a Bimini Twist (for a double line application), but ninety percent of the time I use a Yucatan and a Loop. Since a large percentage of lost fish can be blamed on poorly tied knots, it’s essential to your fishing success that they are tied correctly. By using these basic fundamentals your knots should be secure and retain their maximum breaking strength. 1. When learning a new knot, the three most important words I can tell you are “practice, practice, practice.” Take a length of leader, some line, an old lure with hooks removed and practice until you can correctly tie each knot 25 times. 2. When learning knots, the tag end, sometimes called the working end, is the end of the line used to tie the knot. The standing end is that part of the line coming from your fishing reel. 3. When pulling your knots tight always lubricate them, most anglers use saliva as it prevents
damage to the line. 4. Trim knots closely, a properly tied knot, pulled tight, will not come loose. 5. Pull up all ends when tightening the knot, cinching them as tight as possible. If it slips in your hand, it will slip when you’re hooked up to a fish. Loop Knot: With many excellent knots in use today, one stands out as the perfect choice in my mind. It provides artificial lures and natural baits the most realistic approach and appeal. It’s called a loop knot. Loop knots have been used for decades, but now with swim baits, top waters, diving and suspending lures along with a variety of soft plastics, this knot has emerged as the go-to method of attaching hooks and lures to line. 1. Start by tying a loose overhand knot in your leader. 2. Run the tag end through the eye of the hook or lure and down through the overhand loop. 3. Wrap the tag end around the main line two times. 4. Here’s the important part, take the tag end back through the overhand loop up from the bottom. Make certain the tag end goes through the middle of the overhand loop as shown to prevent the knot from slipping, if it only goes through one side it will slip. Yucatan Knot: This knot was developed by fishermen off the coast of Mexico. Often confused with the Alright Special, when tied correctly the Yucatan is stronger than the Albright and probably the strongest monofilament leader to braid knot. Many anglers using braided line prefer a double main line and use a Bimini Twist. However, I use braided line and prefer a single main line attached to the leader. To accomplish this start with a doubled braided line and wrap it around your leader. 1. Lay the leader and doubled main line parallel to each other. However, you can simply double
your braid line and wrap it around the mono leader. 2. If using monofilament to fluorocarbon, wrap the doubled line around leader four to six times, 10 to 12 times when using braid to fluorocarbon. 3. Feed the end of leader through the loop at end of doubled line. 4. It’s critical that when setting the knot you have a firm grasp on both ends of the braided line and both ends of the leader. Start slowly pulling until the knot begins to twist. Now wet it with saliva, drop the tag end of the leader keeping a firm grip on the main leader, in your other hand get an extra firm grip on the doubled braid (making certain you have both ends in your hand) and with one quick motion pull the tag end of the leader and the braid will twist together into a tight compact knot. Note that although the wraps were made with the doubled line, when the
knot is pulled tight the leader will wrap onto the doubled line. Good Times At The Sea Spray Abaco Challenge
F
rom Feb. 7-10, 18 teams gathered on Elbow Cay, Abaco, Bahamas at the Sea Spray Resort and Marina for the Second Annual Sea Spray Abaco Challenge. Hosted by the resort, this tournament is becoming known as one of the most enjoyable in the Bahamas. With prize packages through fifth place, affordable entry and value-added categories, nine radio raffles worth $400 each, team bags and buckets stuffed with goodies and fantastic food and live entertainment, this event is all about having fun. This year’s event raised and donated more than $6,000 to the Hope Town Primary School, Every Child Counts Bahamas and Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association. Wahoo, blackfin and yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi are the target species, with teams eligible to weigh their two biggest fish from each species on each day of the three-day competition. This year Team Crab Eyes took home the overall championship with a cumulative weight of 292.6 pounds. These guys finished second in the inaugural event and were eager to take home the win. In second place was Team Sonny Boy with a total of 134.3 pounds. Sonny Boy also weighed the biggest fish in the Wahoo Category, and at 52.9 pounds took biggest fish overall for the tournament. In third place was Team Perfect Timing with a total of 83.2 pounds. These guys came from out of nowhere on the last day to make it onto the podium. Special congratulations to Team Family Circus, which won the local Bahamian championship with a total of 65.9 pounds. Their name will be inscribed on the residual trophy at the resort and they took home a beautiful black grouper mount by tournament sponsor King Sailfish Release Mounts. Tricks of the Trade
L
ike land hunters or rod-and-reel fishermen, spearos also study and perfect some tricks of the trade. Spearos immerse themselves into the fishes’ environment, so the first skill to master is to look like you belong there. Beginners tend to exhibit aggressive behavior, chasing and spooking fish. If fish scatter when you get near, study how calmly an experienced diver moves in the water. Until you achieve a non-threatening aura, all other tips and tricks will be useless. After achieving smooth diving technique, here are some techniques to get near fish. 1) Aspetto (Italian for “wait”)—It starts from the surface with a smooth duck-dive into the water while removing the snorkel. You descend with soft kicks until you begin to free-fall as you scan the bottom. By turning your fin blades, you maneuver to the right spot, perhaps where the reef meets sand. You lie motionless on the bottom until curious fish come to check you out. Moving only your eyes, you pick out the prey, move your gun slowly, and make a well-placed shot. A good spearo will make this technique look easy, but it is not. This is especially effective with evasive fish that become curious when you do not move, such as mutton snappers in Florida, stripers in the northeast, and bigeye emperors in Hawaii. 2) Agguato (Italian for “ambush”)–This is a dynamic stalking technique to get closer to prey without being noticed. The diver navigates the bottom using the environment to get closer to the prey. The diver must consider current, visibility and available bottom structure while moving from one object to another, blending into shadows or hiding behind reef formations. If your body can be hidden while closing the gap, the fish will remain unaware of your presence.
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 4
3) Flashers/ Sheri Daye practices “aspetto” technique. chum—Especially Photo by Joe Marino effective for hunting pelagics such as jacks, tunas, dolphin and wahoo. Multiple mirrors dangle below a float, and the flashes of light in the water imitate the reflective glare from a school of baitfish. The fish come in to investigate. Chum can be used in combination with a flasher to bring them even closer and keep them interested. In addition to these techniques, serious spearos are likely to train in a pool, use meditation techniques, and do cardio exercises to increase their breath hold capacity. Many take freediving classes to increase bottom time and safety. While there is no certification required to do it, classes should be a pre-requisite, as freediving is a sport that can lead to “blackout” and death if not practiced correctly. Spearfishing is a beautiful, selective way to catch fish, but it is also physically and mentally demanding. Above all, be safe and happy hunting! Sheri is a world-record holder, host of Speargun Hunter, and producer of The Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Follow “Sheri Daye” and “The Blue Wild” on Facebook and Instagram.

I
am an alligator hunting guide, and a big part of what I do is manage alligator numbers on private lands, such as ranches, farms, golf courses, private subdivisions, mobile home parks, etc. What most people see is the hunting and killing part of what we do as guides, but there’s a whole other side most people don’t get to see or even know about... live capturing of alligators! While live capturing these big toothy critters can be extremely dangerous, it is very necessary. I have to trust my crew with my life, literally. Most alligators, big and small, want to avoid people in general. But when one loses its fear of man from being fed, takes up residence on a farm, ranch, or any other property, they need to be removed. They don’t always have to be killed. Most people don’t want to see the big golf course or neighborhood alligator killed, and I don’t blame them at all. I actually agree with them completely. Alligators are a huge part of Florida and our ecosystem. They need to be managed and preserved. When I get these types of calls, I start getting excited. You never know what you’re fixing to get into! Recently I had a rancher with a big problem, and I do mean BIG! He had a giant gator he had seen for years that was never a problem. But the 12-foot-plus gator had moved into an area where it was a threat to livestock and people. The rancher needed the gator removed, but he didn’t want to see that big alligator killed. I told him that wasn’t a problem at all. I called my crew, and off we went. It didn’t take long at all to locate that big alligator. But it definitely wasn’t willing to cooperate. After an hour-long fight, some broken lines, several bent-out hooks and a few real intense moments, we got a noose on his jaws and a few ropes around him. That was the “easy” part. I’m not real fond of jumping into the mud and water onto the back of something that can kill a man in a split second, but someone has to do it. Call it a job perk! Once on board, I pushed the gator’s head down, secured its jaws with my hands, and we got its mouth taped up and legs tied. We loaded it in the truck and took it to a preserve with no hunting. We released it to live out its days breeding and keeping the population going. Happy gator! We do a lot of live capture and relocation at Red Eye Safaris. It’s pretty rewarding to know you’re part of something more than just the hunting side of the industry. If you have alligators on your property and would like them captured alive, numbers managed and/or relocated, call Wayne at 863990-7650 or email waynenichols75@gmail.com. In some cases they will actually pay the landowner. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

t’s all too easy to read fishing articles and have it be entertainment and inspiration instead of education. What can you do to begin to accelerate your learning curve? First, start taking notes. That’s right, this is your leisure time and you’re not in school any more but its time you take your game up a notch. Get a notebook; this could be the back half of the fishing log book you started, and start using it when you read articles in magazine, books or online subscriptions. Review your notes after you finish reading an article and make sure you understand those notes. If not, get in touch with the author if possible and ask. Next, using Google Earth (the program—not Google Maps satellite version) make a game plan based on what you learned from the article. Take screen shots and print them to remind you what your plan is and take these with you in the boat with your notes. Execute the plan, and stay on task. I find that it’s all too easy for a student to begin the plan that was laid out, only to quickly let it evaporate and punt, reverting to old habits once on the water. Hope these notes help you become a better student of your teachers. Always feel free to contact us at TroutSupport.com for support in improving your coastal inshore fishing game. OAA Fisheries recently changed the recreational seasons for greater amberjack in the Gulf of Mexico. Recreational fishing for greater amberjack will be open May 1-31, 2018. The greater amberjack recreational fishing year will be Aug. 1 through July 31. The greater amberjack recreational fixed closed season will be Nov. 1 through April 30 and June 1 through July 31. Recreational fishing will be open August through October and in May. The change in fishing year is expected to improve recreational fishermen’s access to greater amberjack. It is expected to provide an opportunity to harvest this species when other targeted reef fish species are prohibited from harvest. The recreational fixed closed season was Jan. 1 through June 30. The intent of this closure for 2018 was to provide the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council more time to consider the most appropriate recreational closed season. The new fixed closed season of Nov. 1 through April 30 and June 1 through July 31 is expected to protect the greater amberjack population during peak spawning and still allow for spring and fall recreational harvest.

t’s that time of year again to dust off the rods and reels for the 25th Anniversary Sebastian Exchange Club Foundation’s (SECF) Blue Water Open Charity Offshore Tournament. With such a special anniversary, there will be many surprises. Over the previous 24 years the tournament has raised more than $567,000, all of which has gone back to the community and the causes SECF supports. The Exchange Club is all about the prevention of child abuse
as well as supporting many area youth-oriented services and organizations. A few of these are Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County, Youth Guidance, Shiloh Youth Ranch, CASTLE, Sebastian Soccer, Sebastian River High School Crew, and the list goes on! This year’s tournament will be held again at Capt. Hiram’s Resort on Indian River Drive in Sebastian. On June 1, there will be a captain’s meeting and party, starting with registration at 5 p.m. and the captain’s meeting at 6 p.m. This is a great party and an added benefit to the actual tournament. There will be all kinds of drawings as well as a live auction. We have an awesome shirt designed for this year’s tournament, which will be available for purchase. On Saturday, June 2, fishing starts with lines in at 6 a.m. The weigh in starts at 2 p.m., with a cutoff of 5 p.m. If you haven’t been to one of these exciting events, now is the time. Fishing is predicted to be fantastic this year, and watching fishermen bring in some monster fish is very exciting. They will be vying for a chance to win part of a guaranteed $19,000 purse. The four main-board payouts will be for grouper, kingfish, wahoo and dolphin. Payouts for the four categories are: 1st place-$1,250, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $250; 2nd place-$600, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $150; 3rd place-$400, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $100; 4th place-$250, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $50. Some of the other divisions include Junior and Lady Angler. Along with the main board, there is a $1,000 prize for the largest cobia and amberjack. But wait… there’s more! The William Knapstein Memorial award is an additional $1,000 for the largest grouper. This is donated by his family in his memory. And… there is a bonus board payout of $200, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $30 for the next 10 places knocked off the main board. So bring the kids, come on out to Capt. Hiram’s June 1-2 for some great fun and a chance to support good causes. verything about the Bahamas holds a special place in my heart. Forty-five years later, whether I am chartering Duchess or guiding my clients on their own boats, I still feel the excitement of seeing the Bahama Bank as if it were for the first time. Introducing new friends or returning old friends back to the islands never gets dull. Docking at Rosie’s Place on Grand Cay, Old Bahama Bay in West End, or Orchid Bay on Guana Cay, I know we will be welcomed by our island friends and enjoy the rich hospitality that each one provides. Everyone knows my favorite fishing is for pelagic fish. It never gets old hearing the squeal of the reel as a wahoo, dolphin, tuna or marlin strikes the lures of my design. I also enjoy shutting down the diesels and drifting over the reef with spinning rods catching grouper and snapper. I enjoy eating our catch when we arrive and also look forward to seeing my local Bahamian friends who dive and fish, come to the dock to sell us lobster and stone crab, in season, and conch. Fresh bread brought to the docks by the local ladies goes perfectly with the huge bowl of conch salad I make every time I am there. My last trip was extremely special, as I had my son Allan, grandson Marlin, and longtime friends the Sultan family on board the Duchess. We arrived in Grand Cay for Homecoming and The Joe Flanigan Memorial Tournament. Big Joe was my mentor and close friend. His family holds the tournament every year in honor of their father, who loved fishing and diving the Abacos. This event allowed me to visit with old friends and generations of Grand Cay residents. I feel fortunate that my life’s direction has taken me to places in the Bahamas that bring me and others I have shared it with so much joy. Capt. Billy Black has been fishing the productive offshore waters of Florida’s Treasure Coast and the northern Bahamas for decades. Over the years, he has nurtured many great relationships with the Bahamas and its people fishing the classic 50 ft. Hatteras Duchess.

ver the years, much has been written about the Western North Carolina trout waters of Brevard, Sylva and Cherokee. And for good reason – each of those areas possesses popular waters regularly stocked by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. One place that has traditionally flown under the radar is Hendersonville. If you’re looking for a new spot to fish in the North Carolina mountains, or simply prefer fishing less-crowded waters, Hendersonville and Henderson County offer a nice supply of stocked and native streams that are not as well-known. North Mills River is the prime trout fishing venue in Henderson County. The river has a 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters that receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife. May is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30, and it’s designated only for artificial, single-hook lures at that time. Beginning at noon the first Saturday in June and running through Sept. 30, the waters are open to all anglers with no bait restrictions, with a creel limit of seven trout per day. Another nice thing about fishing North Mills River is its location. It is part of the North Mills River Recreation Area of the Pisgah National Forest, which offers camping and miles of wild trout waters, along with hiking trails, biking trails and picnic shelters. North Mills River Campground is open year-round with 31 standard sites, plus one site with full hook-up. There are tent pads, fire pits and bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets. The campground is adjacent to the delayed harvest section of North Mills River, and also a short drive from the more well-known Davidson River trout waters near Brevard. Other well-kept secrets for fishing in Henderson County are three streams on the eastern side of the county, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown Hendersonville. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has a 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want an undiscovered gem, there’s an 8-mile stretch of hatchery-supported waters on Clear Creek, which flows through the hills and valleys of Henderson County’s apple orchards in the shadows of Bearwallow Mountain. Of course, many anglers like to fish secluded areas, while sleeping in more comfortable quarters, and there is no shortage of lodging in Hendersonville. Everything from economy to deluxe hotels, from rental cabins to vacation rentals to bed-and-breakfast inns are available in Hendersonville. And when the fishing is done, Hendersonville provides plenty of options for exploring the outdoors, listening to music, sipping craft beverages and enjoying great meals. DuPont State Recreational Forest lies just southwest of Hendersonville. The forest includes more than 10,000 acres of woods and trails for hiking and biking. The most popular attractions within the forest are waterfalls. Triple Falls has a vertical drop of 120 feet with
three distinct cascades. DuPont’s pristine falls and forests attracted film crews from “Last of the Mohicans” and “The Hunger Games.” An awesome view of the Mills River Valley is available from Jump Off Rock, one of the more easily accessible grand views in the North Carolina mountains. Less than 15 minutes from Hendersonville’s Main Street, Jump Off Rock features a small park leading to a granite rock with spectacular panoramic views of the river valley framed by the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains. On a clear day, four states—North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee—are visible from this spot. Hendersonville’s music scene thrives with support from its summer concert series. Music on Main Street brings a live band downtown every Friday night from mid-June to mid-August. The concerts take place on the permanent stage in the Visitor Center parking lot. People kick back in lawn chairs as the sun sets. A classic car show is held each evening in conjunction with the concert. Meanwhile, the Rhythm & Brews concert series combines the local beverage scene with live music once a month from May through September. The concerts take place on the third Thursday and include a variety of music, food, beer, wine and cider. A stroll through the pedestrian-friendly downtown, with its wide, winding sidewalks, reveals bear statues painted by local artists. The Bearfootin’ Art Walk begins in May when 20 bears are placed downtown and concludes with a charity auction in October when the bears find their permanent homes. The abundance of orchards makes Henderson County an ideal location for the emerging hard cider market. Three cideries now operate in the county: Flat Rock Ciderworks on Main Street, Bold Rock Hard Cider in Mills River and Appalachian Ridge Artisan Ciders in a 1940s-era barn-turned-cidery. The Cheers! Trail brings together cideries, wineries and breweries for a countywide tasting experience. Two vineyards produce high-quality wines from European varietals. Burntshirt Vineyards also makes an apple wine. Sierra Nevada’s new state-of-the-art brewery and taproom is a mecca for craft-beer aficionados. Downtown Hendersonville boasts 25 independent restaurants, and several of them offer alfresco dining on the sidewalks. Never Blue, a tapas-style restaurant with worldly flavors, rolls up its garagedoor front on pleasant evenings. Diners enjoy small plate delicacies, creative tacos and decadent desserts. Postero, another Main Street standout, presents New American fare that is both familiar, yet innovative. The chicken and waffles dish is garnished with foie gras maple syrup, and kimchi rémoulade tops the lunchtime burger. The menu changes seasonally and showcases local ingredients. Another downtown hot spot is Mezzaluna, specializing in wood-fired pizzas and homemade pastas. Mezzaluna has a chefdriven menu with Italian influences complemented by a craft beer lineup that is heavy on local labels. Just up the street, Umi serves fresh sushi and sashimi, and several bento boxes for those who want to try a little of everything. ho doesn’t have a smile on their face when they’re spending time on the water? You can’t help yourself. Boating is the definition of getting away from it all. And getting away from it all is always more fun with friends. This is where the United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club comes in. Enjoying your time on the water with family and friends starts with being safe and responsible while having fun. That’s what makes America’s Boating Club different than most boating organizations. For over a hundred years, the organization’s focus has been on providing unsurpassed boating safety education. But the organization’s leadership and members are passionate about a membership that doesn’t end on Sunday and doesn’t care if the calendar says it’s winter. It’s about being together and building a community through a variety of events like parties, meetings and even just getting together for no reason at all. Driven by this passion, United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club, the country’s largest nonprofit boating organization, just launched its new logo. This is the first of several planned updates in the organization’s new brand image and identity. Changes to the organization’s website, social media platforms and collateral are expected in the coming weeks. “We are United States Power Squadrons, but we are also America’s Boating Club,” said Gary Cheney, chief commander, United States Power Squadrons. “This is not just a name change, it describes what we do. We go boating and have fun doing it. Our squadrons are social clubs as well as providers of high quality boating education – allowing members to enjoy the sport and camaraderie of boating and any number of activities that keep us together. Togetherness is what this lifestyle is all about. We joined the organization for the boating education, but we stayed for the friends.”
Offering classes For Boaters, By Boaters in boat handling, navigation, boat maintenance, weather and related subjects, United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club serves as a virtual “yacht club” with boating and social activities for all types of recreational boaters. With over 27,000 members organized into 356 local clubs across the country, America’s Boating Club is comprised of families who contribute to their communities by promoting safe boating through education. Members are vital to strengthening the communities they live in and know it’s important to live their values by giving back through public service and volunteer opportunities. Members provide courtesy vessel safety checks, help the NOAA’s National Ocean Service keep nautical charts accurate and organize beach cleanups. “Our commitment is to continue learning, teaching, laughing and helping our fellow members enjoy boating,” continued Cheney. “Whether you’re passionate about cruising, racing, making new friends, volunteering in your community or learning from experienced boaters, your local squadron has the resources you need to engage your passions and, perhaps, instill some new ones.” In February of 2017, the United States Power Squadrons announced its America’s Boating Club co-brand to its squadrons, following an almost yearlong re-naming exercise. Popticals Are Performance Glasses
Without The Hassle
For any outdoor adventure—whether it’s hiking, fishing or camping—you need high-performance sunglasses. No matter if it’s a day hike or a multi-day camping trip, sports sunglasses keep your eyes safe when you’re outside and enhance your vision to make your experience even better. The problem is, there’s nowhere to keep your sunglasses when it’s time to take them off. Cases are too big and take up valuable pack space. They’re big and bulky in your pocket, if they even fit there. Most resort to hanging expensive glasses on a strap around their necks or
perching them on their heads. That’s no way to treat a valuable piece of equipment. Without protection, your sunglasses end up scratched, lost or broken, and you didn’t just hike into the backcountry to view breathtaking vistas through scratched lenses. Popticals are the solution to this dilemma. They are good-looking, high-performance, polarized sports sunglasses that fold down to a small profile and fit in a portable, durable case. Popticals feature the patented FL2 Micro-Rail System, which is a breakthrough design that allows for folding sunglasses that are sturdy and hold up to rugged use. The case is less than half the size of cases for most comparable high-performance sunglasses. Slip it into your pocket, where it is unobtrusive. Throw it in your backpack without having to worry about damage to your frames or lenses. Or clip it with the attached carabiner to the outside of your gear, where your shades will be safe but easily accessible. In addition to taking up less space when stored, Popticals are also lightweight. With NYDEF nylon lenses manufactured for Popticals by Carl Zeiss Vision, they weigh significantly less than glasses with glass lenses without sacrificing on clarity or performance. Popticals feature high-quality polarized lenses but weigh less, which makes them more comfortable on your face for all-day wear. For backpackers, it also cuts down on the load your shoulders will be hauling. “Pack Small. Live Big” is a motto Popticals has adopted. The idea is that your gear should enhance your experience, not weigh down or inconvenience you. With Popticals, you’ll have clearer, better vision for your adventure. And when you don’t have them on, you won’t have to worry about them being lost, scratched or broken. For more on Popticals and to see all of their sunglasses, go to www. popticals.com.
SEE MORE. CATCH MORE. PopH2O with NYDEF™ lens technology lets you see sharper details beneath the surface of the water to catch the fish your buddies can’t even see. Polarized NYDEF™ nylon lenses made by Carl Zeiss enhance your vision with the clarity of a glass lens at a fraction of the weight. Spend less time guessing at what you’re seeing in the water, and more time catching fish. #SeeMoreFishCatchMoreFish

The Ultimate Fish Attractor!

The BoJo Fishlight is no ordinary fishlight. The unique design feeds your fish by knocking bugs into the water… still alive! The unit has two fluorescent bulbs that attract bugs. Once bugs come to the light, an electric motor with weed eater-cord blades knocks bugs into the water where fish eat them all night long. The Bo-Jo Fishlight works great on fresh or saltwater, on ocean docks, large lakes and small ponds. Bugs come to the light, bugs get knocked in the water, baitfish feed on bugs, big fish feed on baitfish, and you catch the big fish! The device is simple to install. The durable docklights also give you illumination to enjoy nighttime activities and costs less than a nickel a night to operate. Compared with the cost of mechanical feeders, the device will pay for itself in the first year. For more information and to watch a video, see the website or scan the barcode. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT Road Shower THE SOLAR SHOWER OF THE FUTURE IS HERE!
Running water is nice to have when you’re on the road to adventure, but many times it is awfully hard to find. The Road Shower is like adding plumbing to the rack of your vehicle. It gives outdoors enthusiasts easy access to hot or cold pressurized water wherever the road takes them. It’s simple; mount The Road Shower to the roof rack, fill the tank with water and let the sun do the rest. With a handy temperature gauge, it’s easy to watch the progress as solar power heats the water inside at a rate of 12 to 20 degrees per hour on a sunny day. By the time you return from a trail ride or day of fishing, there could be water hotter than 100 degrees waiting for you to take a shower. But cleaning your body is just one use for this handy invention. Hot water makes cleaning the camp dishes a breeze. Good water pressure is invaluable for rinsing down muddy kayaks, boards, bikes, boots or pets. And The Road Shower can be used for drinking water as well. The Road Shower is available in 4-, 7-, or 10-gallon models. It is constructed of powder-coated aluminum with very few extra parts, so it is extremely durable and built to last a lifetime. The unit can be pressurized automatically while filling it with a garden hose, and pressurization can also be achieved with a bike pump or other inflation tools where there is no hose available.

Bluefin A State Record
A
n 877-pound bluefin tuna was caught off Oregon Inlet, N.C. on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries recently certified it as a new state record. Retired Army Gen. Scott Chambers of Townsend, Delaware, reeled in the huge fish while fishing aboard Capt. Dennis Endee’s A-Salt Weapon out of Pirates Cove Marina in Manteo, N.C. Chambers battled the fish for 2 ½ hours on 130-pound test line with a Shimano 130 rod and reel. The fish measured nearly 9 ½ feet curved fork length (tracing the contour of the body from the tip of the nose to the fork in the tail), and it had a girth of 79 inches. Regulations dictate that trophy bluefin tuna longer than 73 inches must be released in the Atlantic south of Great Egg Inlet, N.J. after 11:30 p.m. on March 17, 2018. Chambers was hours from having to release his state record catch when it ate a trolled dead bait. Coming in just under the wire, Chambers’ fish crushed the previous recreational state record by 72 pounds. That 805-pound fish was caught in 2011. The all-tackle world record was caught off Nova Scotia in 1979. It weighed 1,496 pounds. Bluefin tuna much larger than this new state record are known to come from North Carolina waters. According to The Outer Banks Voice, a bluefin heavier than 1,000 pounds was caught this winter, but it was sold to a dealer and was not eligible for the record.
