W

hile mystic grouper can be caught year-round in the Bahamas, the winter months are our favorite time of year. Whenever a weather window presents itself, we point our bow east across the Florida Straights in search of these deep-water bottom dwellers.

Mystics are one of the lesser-known grouper species, simply because anglers don’t fish deep enough to target them. Like all grouper, they are excellent to eat and usually weigh from 15 to 50 pounds, although they can grow much larger.

It takes special gear to fish the 800- to 1,200-foot depths where we find mystics. Armed with Shimano Tiagra 80 WAs and Shimano Tiagra 50 WAs equipped with Hooker Electric Autostop drives, we string up 65- to 100-pound Power Pro braid on Crafty One Custom’s Deep Drop Rods.

We begin by paying close attention to our Humminbird Solix sonar with CHIRP HD digital technology to locate bottom structure. We look for cones, holes, drop-offs, ledges and deep-water ridges. Once viable structure is located, we position the boat above it with engines out of gear to judge how wind and current will manipulate our drift. Then the

boat is repositioned up-current from the structure and the deep-drop rigs are readied.

When targeting mystics, we use our www.ThreeBuoysFishing.com grouper deep-drop rigs made with three 8/0 VMC 3x Circle Hooks on 100-pound branch lines off of 12 feet of 150-pound main line. For bait, we prefer fresh-cut 8-inch strips of dolphin, tuna, wahoo or barracuda.

Many deep-drop anglers claim, “no light, no bite,” but our experience has proven that, especially with mystics, we catch more and bigger fish without lights.

We deploy two rods on opposite sides of the boat. Lead weights in the 10-pound range are the rule of thumb, but weight can be adjusted to the current. After the weights hit bottom, the reels are left in freespool to lay the rigs straight down on the bottom. The engines should be used to decrease the boat’s drift to a standstill, if possible. If the boat drifts, let out line to keep the rigs on bottom.

When the rod tip bumps and shakes, resist the urge to lock up the drag and retrieve line. Wait a minute or two for additional fish to sense the commotion. They’ll often eat the remaining baits. When it’s time to strike, lift the reel’s drag to strike (pre-set to 20 pounds of drag) and slowly start your retrieve.

Big mystic grouper put up quite a fight at first, and you might even think you’ve hung bottom. Be patient and slowly gain as must line as possible. When fish are about halfway up, their air bladders expand and create lift. They will begin to float your rig up to the surface.

Finding bait becomes more important than at any other time of year.

Goebel likes to get out well before dawn in search of shad or herring flickering near the surface, especially when a big moon keeps baitfish active all night. Diving birds are also a dead giveaway. They are likely feeding on baitfish pushed by stripers from below.

“A lot of times if there’s bait there, I won’t even worry about marking fish on the graph,” Goebel said. “I’ll just put out my lines and start fishing where the bait is.”

here aren’t many anglers willing to endure the frigid early morning temperatures of winter on a large reservoir. But for those who can handle a little discomfort, right now is the best time of year to hook up with the striper of a lifetime.

Around the Southeast, in reservoirs where striped bass were introduced, falling water temperatures spur changes in behavior that make the largest fish in the lake susceptible to anglers. Those 30- to 50-pounders are feeding up right now. They’re storing up reserves that will take them through the spring spawn.

“It’s trophy striper season,” said Shane Goebel, of Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service. “The bigger fish are participating a little better. This time of year, we start going after those big ol’ hogs that are chasing the big baits.”

The large summer schools broke up months ago. Stripers are spread out and on the move, following baitfish into the creek mouths and up into the backs of the creeks.

Big fish move shallow when water temps hit the mid to low 50s on the lakes Goebel guides in the mountains of north Georgia and western North Carolina. It might take some searching to find them, but the rewards can be huge.

Because the stripers are continually moving with the bait, covering water is crucial. Goebel said to troll as many baits in as wide a spread as you can handle. Herring are great on lakes where they are present, but this time of year you should also work some big gizzard shad or trout into the spread.

Sometimes it takes a big mouthful to convince big fish to eat.

Goebel runs baits 30 to 40 feet behind planer boards. He’ll drop freelines 100 to 150 feet behind the boat. If the area where he finds bait isn’t too shallow, he’ll put a little bit of weight ahead of the baits on the inside boards to cover more water vertically. He slow trolls at about half a mile per hour.

This is a pattern Goebel fishes all the way into May, when stripers have moved into a pre-spawn phase. It might not produce the numbers of fish that downlining into summer mega-schools will, but the fish are generally a lot bigger than those 5- to 10-pound summer schoolies.

f Costa Rica isn’t already on your bucket list, it should be. Famous for both inshore and offshore fishing, it’s also a country with incredible biodiversity and exciting eco-tourism opportunities. In short, there’s something for every sportsman and adventure seeker here.

From a fishing perspective, the west coast of this Central American country is most favored with several significant cities and ports including Jaco, Quepos and, of course, Golfito. It’s Los Suenos, however, where

my wife, Felicia and I found outstanding action on a trip last April. We worked the inshore grounds, catching huge roosterfish, rainbow runners, grouper, jacks and even mahi. We also decked a big cubera snapper. Of course, we did have an edge. Coastal Angler’s very own Costa Rica inshore reporter Capt. Carlos Arguedas and his first-mate son, Christopher, were our charter crew.

“This really is a terrific place to fish,” said Arguedas, “We have access to a lot of different spots ranging from very close to the marina to 50 miles away. The roosterfish action is unbelievable here but we also catch big cubera snapper, amberjack, groupers and huge red snappers, too.”

Arguedas loves to take clients for roosterfish because they fight so hard, are found close to port, and grow big. He’s had a 90-pounder grace his deck. For these, he’ll slow troll live baits like blue runners, herring, sardines or bonita. All of these baits, impaled on size 8 circle hooks, also attract other large predators; so you never know what to expect when the rod doubles over.

“Roosterfish are very impressive when you first see them,” said Arguedas. “They are exotic-looking with big dorsal rays, a huge mouth and striped flanks. They are stunning to see for the first time. They are also exceptionally strong. Fight a 20-pounder and you’ll think you have a 40-pounder at the end of the line. They jump, too, and shake their head, so remember to lower your rod tip when that fish comes up or you’ll tear the hook free.”

Among the other big fish that hit the deck for Arguedas’ crew on a regular basis are goliath grouper that can top 400 pounds. These are targeted around local reefs. If you want to run offshore, sailfish, tuna and marlin abound within 10 miles of port. Dorado, sometimes topping 30 pounds, can be tempted within sight of the coast.

Costa Rica’s tropical climate makes it a year-round destination. Most travelers prefer to visit during the dry season, which runs from December through April, but you’ll find lighter crowds and lower travel prices during the “green” or rainy season from May to November.

he first time I saw someone spearfishing, I was intrigued and wondered out loud how hard it would be to load a speargun.

A friend heard me and said, “I’m sure you can do it. It’s probably more about technique than brute strength.” He was right.

It’s not uncommon to struggle to load your first speargun, and you might suspect they made the bands too short. If you give it some time and use the right technique, it will become easy. First, some safety tips: 1) Never load a speargun out of the water.

2) Keep the safety on until you intend to shoot a fish.

3) Even with the safety on, treat it like a loaded weapon, never let the tip point at anyone.

4) Use tip protectors when not in use, so you don’t scratch anything.

Some spearguns are loaded by resting the butt of the gun on your hip and pulling the bands toward the shaft notches. Others are loaded by resting the butt high on the middle of the chest and pulling the bands toward your sternum. Hip-loading spearguns are commonly used by scuba divers, as chest loading can be difficult when wearing a buoyancy compensator vest. Freedivers are less constricted by gear, so they normally use chest-loading spearguns. These have longer range because the shaft tabs sit closer to the butt of the gun.

Now, some loading tips: 1) Wear gloves and wetsuit to prevent slips, scrapes or bruising.

Some wetsuits have a loading pad built into the chest.

2) Don’t look down and hunch over when loading the bands.

Push forward with your chest and pull the band swiftly with your arms, so the shaft tabs are pushed forward to meet the incoming

band.

3) Use a loading tab (if using a wood gun). This simple device makes things much easier by allowing you to first hip load the band to the loading tab and then raise the butt to your chest for the final pull. Although it’s a two-step process, it can be done quickly and will feel much easier.

4) If your bands are still too hard to load, use three longer bands.

5) Work out, lift weights, work on core and upper body. Try bench presses, seated rows, bent over rows, pushups and pull-ups.

Bands and dumbbells can be incorporated into your workout routine, whether at the gym or home.

he action in northwest Costa Rica has once again been off the charts as FishingNosara celebrates its 10th season of charter fishing.

All five boats are in the water and scoring big for their clients, with 51 trips logged in November. Big dorados are the staple catch this time of year, but it was a welcome surprise to see swarms of billfish in the mix.

The team nabbed 12 marlin releases, 24 sailfish releases, 217 dorados, and five roosterfish releases. One of these roosters was a nearworld-record at 72 pounds.

On Nov. 19, Capt. Alex on the Harvester posted the best trip of the month with Terry and Julie Edwards’ group. They loaded up the trophy case with excellent releases.

A 300-plus-pound blue marlin was the headliner of the trip for these Texas anglers, and shortly after that battle, the 32-foot mega panga nabbed a wonderful sailfish release. Team Edwards came inshore to finish the day, and saved the best for last… that massive 72-pound roosterfish.

The IGFA All-Tackle Record for roosterfish is 114 pounds, and the second-place fish is 85 pounds. This fish caught by the Harvester wasn’t far off the second place catch.

Most impressively, the above-mentioned IGFA record catches were posted in 1960 and 1954 respectively. This size of roosterfish has not been seen in more than five decades.

On the same day, other members of Julie Edwards’ family had a big time on the 32-foot Discoverer with a blue marlin release of their own. Capt. Carlos estimated this fish at 250 pounds upon release.

Also in November, FishingNosara Hall of Famer Bill Harris took to the 28-foot bar-room brawler Explorer and opened up her season with a billfish grand slam!

A big blue marlin was the highlight of the morning, and it was followed by a late-day striped marlin. Bill nabbed the first marlin, and Mark Scott scored the second. A nice Pacific sailfish caught

by Diane Turner completed the grand slam for these Tampa, Fla.based anglers.

They didn’t go home empty handed, either, thanks to five big tasty dorado catches spread throughout the day.

On the Discoverer, the team of Eli Bedran, Andrew Lipps, Kelsey Harry and Laurie Harry report a fantastic blue marlin release, the first of the year for the big battleship, plus six lovely dorados.

John Purdy, John Van Diver, Mike Pickelsimer and Dale McElroy fished in early November and reported 11 sweet dorados on ice.

The Harvester has been itching for action, and found what she was looking for as these monsters topped out at 60 pounds. The action was so hot that Capt. Alex chose to release the biggest cows so as not to hurt the stocks.

Tom Noel, aka Paddleboat Tom, moved to Florida from Michigan in 1979. He closed his grocery store, loaded a pickup truck with three paddleboats, his wife Joy, two sons, a daughter and the family dog and headed south. Tom set up shop in his garage in their Lake Clarke Shores home. After a few years, Joy put her foot down and insisted that he find a warehouse.

Tom rented a space next to their current location, just off Forest Hill Blvd in West Palm Beach. A couple of years later he bought the 3,000 square-foot warehouse. Tom’s sons Rob and Tom are also involved with the business.

Noel’s Distributing sells safety equipment, fire extinguishers, flares, rope, anchors and a warehouse full of other boating supplies to their clients, predominately in the Keys, along the east coast and in central Florida. They will ship anywhere.

ahoo Smackdown X, hosted by the historic Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina on Nov. 8-12, saw 23 boats competing for more than $25,000 in cash and prizes. Out of the 23 competing boats, 22 teams landed fish, bringing 152 wahoo to the scales in the process.

Team Who’s Your Daddy took top team honors with 16 fish weighing a total of 231.5 pounds and took home $15,000 in cash winnings.

Second place was Team Blitzsea, which earned $7,500 in cash for their 21 fish and a total catch weight of 206.4 pounds.

Team Murderize, out of Freeport, Grand Bahama, finished third, taking home $2,500 in cash winnings for a catch of 11 fish with a total catch weight of 193.6 pounds.

Team Little Giant caught the largest wahoo of the tournament at 50.7 pounds.

Tournament festivities included live local entertainment nightly, a cocktail reception poolside for the captains’ meeting, a cookout on day one of the tournament, and a closing awards party on the great lawn, featuring a buffet, live entertainment and a full open bar.

TAMPA BAY FISHING REPORT BY: CAPT. WOODY GORE

W

ith all the residential canals and inshore reefs, Bay anglers are truly blessed when it comes to fishing in the winter months. It seems you never have to run far to find what you are looking for. Fish seem to acclimate themselves to the lower tides and feed all day with little or no concern for weather. Fishing around the grass flats also begins heating up, with plenty of respectable sight fishing. Live baits like sardines are always helpful, if you can still find and net a few. The old standby live shrimp and, of course, artificial lures work well this time of year.

January is perfect for reds to start moving into Tampa Bay’s shallow grass flats. Shallow water flats warm up a lot quicker. When the sun is shining on a cold Florida morning, you can gamble that a broken bottom grass flats is packed with redfish looking for food and warmth. Notorious for foraging in less

than a couple feet of water, redfish are on the flats in shallow water looking for sand worms, mud minnows, shrimp and crabs, as well as, protection from the ever-present packs of porpoise cruising Tampa Bay. I find that redfish seem to respond more aggressively to scented lures, especially in the winter. My color preferences are new penny, camo and white. I use soft jerk style baits like Exude, Gulp or Fishbites.

If snook is your species of choice, the Bay and its tributaries offer plenty of excellent fishing. As the water temperature drops, snook begin to move to deeper water and areas holding structure. Canals with docks are always great places to find winter snook.

Remember, anything in the water that’s warmed by the sun is a good place to fish in the winter. Also remember, snook and redfish are catch and release only until further notice.

Sea trout fishing has been good this year, especially around deeper rocky bottoms and lush grass flats with sandy potholes. Windy overcast days with incoming water are a

favorite time for trout anglers. Freelined (or under a popping cork) live greenbacks, shrimp and artificial lures will do the trick. Live baits are great, but you can catch plenty of fish on jigs and jerk baits. Try MirrOlure’s Top Dog Jr. using a steady walk-the-dog action to produce some awesome fishing.

Snapper and sheepshead fishing should also begin improving. Two of the best eating fish in the Bay are snapper and sheepshead.

Hopefully, with the colder weather, the RT will be gone from the beaches so the cold fronts can lower the near shore water temps and bring us a good Spanish mackerel and kingfish bite. LEARNING TO FISH DIFFERENT WINTER TIME CONDITIONS IS KEY TO JANUARY SUCCES BY: CAPT. MIKE ANDERSON

J

anuary is one of our trickiest weather months to figure out.

It could be 80 degrees with light winds, or it could be 50 degrees with 15-20 knot north winds!

You just never know, and having to work around the damages of red tide only makes it more challenging. Learning where fish spend time this month will make your days on the water both more plentiful and rewarding. If water temps are down in the upper 50’s to low 60’s, which is common conditions this time of year and the winds are high, use the residential canals and intercoastal waterways to your advantage. They give you protection from the cold winds and plenty of structure to hold lots of fish.

Concrete seawalls radiate heat into the water from the sun and can be great places to look. Speckled trout, sheepshead, jacks, snook and ladyfish will all find refuge in these man-made estuaries. Fishing live shrimp, either free-lined or under a cork, will work great in these conditions--as will your favorite plastic jigs. Shrimp digest faster than pilchards or pinfish, so gamefish tend to feed better on

them in cooler conditions.

Find those canals with really dark mud bottoms, as they will heat up fastest from the sun. Even a slight uptick in water temp could make a difference in your bite.

If we get lucky enough to have another very mild January with water temps staying closer to 70 degrees, the bait will remain thick.

That means kingfish will be on hard bottom areas and nearshore wrecks. Snook, redfish and trout will remain on the flats near river and creel mouths--feeding with a vengeance.

Artificial baits will definitely work well as mild water temps keep fish aggressive and feeding. These mild conditions also make it much easier to get offshore for black fin tuna, amber jack plus red and gag grouper. All of which move in to shallower water in these cooler months. January on Florida’s west coast can be unpredictable when it comes to the weather. But, you can still find success as long as you know where to find them and fish accordingly.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH MUSSELS OVER PASTA BY: MICHELLE ATKINS Directions:

Ingredients: • 4 pounds fresh mussels • 2 cups white cooking wine • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 5 garlic cloves finely chopped • 3 teaspoons finely chopped shallots • 1/4 cup of parsley chopped and split in 2 • 4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 1/2 lemon juiced • 1 box pasta

• In a large pot bring water to a boil and add pasta.

• Rinse and check that mussels are not open. If any of them are open they must be discarded.

In a large pot heat to medium-high heat, bring wine, salt, garlic, shallots and 1/8 of a cup parsley

to a simmer.

• Add the mussels to the pot, cover and simmer until all the mussels open, about 5-8 minutes.

Don’t overcook them.

• Rinse your pasta and place in bowls.

• Separate mussels. In the pot where you cooked the mussels, add olive oil and lemon juice.

Pour the mixture over the mussels and garnish with the remaining parsley.

T

he anticipation is building as they drive to their favorite alligator hunting grounds.

Travis (the captain) and Briceson (his first mate) have all of the proper permits and tags-they are ready. As they pull into the launch, they do one last check to make sure they have all of their gear. Both men are experienced, but each hunt is different-each hunt is dangerous.

Their boat is custom made--a Jon boat with a raised bow and halogen lights to illuminate the darkness of night. Briceson is the spotter. With just the use of a headlamp, he directs the captain using hand signals. His job is to locate gators.

His headlamp shining, he can see the reflection of the eyes of these prehistoric creatures. This is a grueling job, standing all night as he is pelted by the bugs attracted by the light. The first alligator is spotted and it is time to jump into action. Travis maneuvers the boat while his mate reaches for the harpoon. Florida gator hunting is nothing like

Louisiana gator hunting (Swamp People). There is no soaking baits and coming back the next day to get your prize. Florida alligator hunting is true hunting.

With the harpoon in hand, the first throw is a miss. The next throw is right on target. With the harpoon deeply embedded in the animal, a snare is used to secure the mighty reptile. It is time for the captain to dispatch this animal. Using a “bang stick” (a stick containing a .38 caliber bullet) Travis places the stick at a specific location on the animal’s head and fires. The nine-foot gator is then hauled into the boat. Tape is used to secure the mouth--just in case. It is time to move on and find another.

Patience is imperative for this type of hunting.

Alligators are elusive and will hide in the mud or deep in the marsh. Briceson spots another alligator. As they moved in closer, the gator submerges and the lights on the vessel are turned on for better vision. Bubbles rising to the top of the water are a dead giveaway of the animal’s location. This calls for a different tactic. Using a heavy-duty rod, reel and a large treble hook, it is time to try to snag this beast. This one is much bigger--cast after cast, nothing. They follow the bubble trail and finally “gator on” --what a fight using fishing gear. Again, the gator is snared and the bang stick is used--another one onboard.

Other alligators where spotted, but only two

made it into the boat. It has been a long night.

Now it is time for Travis to take the alligators to be processed. Little to no part of these gators will go to waste. They have two tags left and the season will be closing soon. This just means they will be out on the water doing what they love again, very soon--“Florida Gator Hunting.”

WINTER IS HERE BY: CAPT. ANTHONY CORCELLA

T

he weekly cold fronts have arrived. This can make fishing difficult if you don’t have a plan. The snook have begun to move to their backwater winter homes. The redfish will get lockjaw after the front and the trout can be hit or miss on the flats. You have to adjust your plan if you want to put a bend in your rod--luckily there are options.

Some of the biggest negative tides of the year are coming up. This will trap the fish in the potholes and channels. Live shrimp are a best bet. For artificial, go with a soft body jig or a suspending bait like a Mirro-lure. The water is crystal clear this time of year. Don’t be afraid to drop down on your leader to 15-pound flouro.

Another best bet is fishing the many residential docks that line the bay. Sheepshead, black drum, redfish, trout, flounder and snapper will stack up under the docks and can provide nonstop action. The additional bonus

is many of the docks are protected from the harsh northern winds.

Again, live shrimp are your best bet.

Soft body jigs like Gulp can fill the cooler as well. When fishing the docks, pay attention to the direction of the current. Make your presentation in the direction of the flow.

Live shrimp should be free lined with the addition of a small splits if needed. Throw the lures up current and work them slowly back towards the structure. Winter fishing is all about slowing things down. If you’re cold, the fish are too.

The final option is targeting sheepshead.

As mentioned, they will be found at residential docks. But, the hot action will be at area bridges.

The skyway, Dick Misner and Gandy bridges all are famous for both big fish and hot action.

Knocker rigged shrimp, both live and dead and cut in pieces, are a popular choice. Fiddler crabs and barnacles also work well. Use the smallest hooks and lightest line and weights you can get away with. The sheepshead are notorious bait stealers. Sometimes when you feel the bite, it’s too late. That’s why they wear stripes. They earned the nickname “Convict Fish” for a reason.

Just remember, don’t let the cold weather keep you at home. If you adjust your game

DERELICT VESSEL REMOVAL GRANT FINAL 2018-2019 OPPORTUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT

T

he Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is announcing the opportunity to apply for Derelict Vessel Removal Grants.

The application period for the Bulk Derelict Vessel Removal Grant Program will begin on January 2, 2019, at 8:00 AM (EST), and end on February 15, 2019, at 5:00 PM (EST). Applications received after February 15, 2019, will not be eligible for consideration in round one. All removal applications must demonstrate proof that due process was provided for each vessel’s owner. At a minimum, this would include an opportunity for the vessel owner to challenge the derelict vessel determination, either in criminal court or in an administrative hearing. Vessel cases not demonstrating that these opportunities have been offered to the owners of the vessels will not be considered for state funding assistance.

THE GOOD AND BAD BY: CAPT. JOEL GANT

W

ell, as you have always heard, there’s the good news and the bad news. Usually, we like to hear the bad news first--so here it is. On the Nature Coast, we are known for the gag grouper.

Most of you fishermen and fisherwomen know the gag grouper season ended on December 31st-that’s the bad news. Now for the good news. We had a really good season in 2018. A lot of keeper and under-size gags were caught in November and

December. I’m sure you’re wondering what under-size fish has to do with the good news.

This shows us that the grouper management of size, limits and open/closed season is working. More good news. We can still fish for the groupers.

The bite should continue to be good even in the shallows.

For my shallow-water grouper, I start in my 8 to 12-foot spots.

Anchor away from your spot and start with some cut up baits to chum. You can either toss a crank bait, a live or cut bait to work the area. I have found that the fish in the shallows will make a longer run to try and find a safe spot.

Be prepared with strong enough line and drag set properly.

For you inshore guys, have some patience.

Look for trout, redfish and snook to be back in the real shallow backwaters. Try to get back near some springs, oyster beds or even mud bottoms. These

places will warm up faster than the outer flats.

Your best baits probably would be live shrimp or cut bait. These baits will put out sound and smell.

With the colder waters, these fish are not going to exert too much energy to hunt down a bait--that’s why I say be patient.

Remember that from the Hernando/Pasco line you cannot keep snook or redfish till May 10, 2019, because of the red tide to the south. This means if you fish in the Aripeka area, you cannot keep these fish. Again, good news, the trout bite has been really good and you can keep them. Regulation are five per person. They have to be more than 15 inches and less than 20 inches. You may possess one over 20 inches. The ones over 20 inches are usually the breeders so, if you can, please release these. There are also bull redfish, as in this picture, that we caught on a recent charter trip.

I KNOW WHY WE DON’T KEEP NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS… BY: MISTY WELLS

or years now, the number one question we all ask ourselves after the first of the year is “why can’t I keep my resolutions? ” After undertaking a huge study, aka asking all my friends and family, I know the answer--because we make boring, hard and uninteresting resolutions. This year, strive to make resolutions that are fun to keep and that we look forward to. I want to encourage everyone to make the resolution of Taking it Outside and making the most of the outdoors in the great State of Florida. Nobody remembers their best day ever doing homework, working or watching TV. However, I bet you can tell me about catching your first fish or bagging your first deer.

To get you started, I have put together a list to jump start your outdoor adventures in the State of Florida. The early part of the year in Florida is the time to consider two things-camping and manatees. Camping in Florida during the Winter months is the best. It is much cooler, very few bugs and you can finally

build a campfire. There are so many parks and campgrounds in the State of Florida you won’t have any trouble finding one in your own backyard, or across the state. Crystal River is the place to be when you want to get some manatees love--you can swim with them and be surrounded. When the Gulf waters start to get cold, the manatees move up the river where the temperatures stay at a warm 72 degrees and they will spend their Winter months.

The Plantation on Crystal River offers some amazing off-season deals and they provide the boats, guides and wetsuits to take you on your journey with the manatees.

The Everglades Shark Valley entrance is a great place to grab your bike or rent one, because they don’t allow cars past the visitors’ center. Hit the trail on this swampy get away where alligators may be lounging in the saw grass, and birding this time of year is phenomenal. There is a 65-foot observation tower that provides panoramic views for over 17 miles across what the Miccosukee called Kaa-ha-yat-le. If biking that far is too much, but you still want a bird’s eye view of wood storks, ibis and great white herons, you can take the two-hour tram that covers 15 miles of the park. America’s only state park with

horseback riding on the beach is on Amelia Island northeast of Jacksonville. Take a ride with Kelly Seahorse Ranch along the shoreline and through the hardwood forest trails on an invigorating five-mile one-of-a-kind ride.

LAKE ALFRED, AUBURNDALE, WINTER HAVEN AREAS BY: RON SCHELFO

H

appy New Year! Believe it or not, this is one of the best times of the year to go fishing. The months of January, February and March offer the best time of year for speckled perch. We are already seeing a lot of limits from all of our area lakes. As the weather continues to get colder, the recommended baits to use are live minnows and yellow or white jigs. In the Auburndale area, our best reports are coming from Lake Juliana. Our Lake Alfred, Lakes Haines, Rochelle and Alfred are also reporting great results. Over in the South Winter Haven Chain, our best reports are from lakes Cannon, Shipp, May and all canals on the chain--the time to fish is now!

Even though this is prime speckled perch season, don’t rule out bass fishing. Now is also the time for those big bass we like to see. When going after bass, our top three recommendations for baits at this time are Bass Assassin Boss Shiner Swim Baits in assorted colors or Fish Head Primal Vibe Swim Jigs and Booyah Lipless Crank Baits in royalty color. These are the baits that will make your day! To zero in on those big bass, we recommend fishing along the shore line--not

toward the shore. As the water gets colder, you need to fish slower.

We are seeing signs of bass beginning to stage--looking for a place to bed.

elcome back Yak fans. WooHoo, I made it to 2019--who would have thunk it. I miss-spent so much of my youth, I was in deficit spending before I hit 21. But here we are.

I hope each of you had a wonderful Christmas, and I guess we’ll see what the new year brings.

World peace is probably asking a bit much, so I’ll settle for great fishing.

Oh, and if I get my wish, I’ll share (lol)!

While on that subject, the Hernando snook reports are the best in years. Up and down the coast, line siders in all sizes are showing up.

Let’s hope it’s a mild winter. I’d love to see them hang around.

It all began on a winter day way back in 2018--you know last week.

On a trip to one of my favorite spots, I hit the water around six am to be in position for an early negative seven tide. So, here I am in the perfect position at day break with a mile of grass flats exposed in front of me and there wasn’t a fish to be seen. I was expecting to see tailing reds, black drum, and sheepies everywhere (as they have been in the past) on a tide like this at this time of year. So, here I am. Dead calm water and I could see for a mile. What I saw was nothing-no tails, no movement. Like Charlie Brown used to say “good grief.” This horrible fate continued through the outgoing and into the turn of the tide and I’m getting frustrated. I mean “come on, where could they be?”

My savior was the incoming tide.

As it came up, the fish arrived. First to show were the reds back in the creeks (I think those buggers were there all along). I picked up a 29-inch and a 22-inch. Then the rats and puppies (small reds) went back to the outside.

Now, the trout decided to make their appearance as well. So, after months of saying fish the outgoing to the turn, the bite turned on me to the low to mid incoming and I was still catching fish toward and past the

high. I’ll keep you posted cause this ain’t normal.

As the tide started to really rip (remember this was a negative seven day) I rode it back in the creeks and the fun really began. As I approached one of my drum holes, I noticed some surface activity. This is normal with mullet around. I got in position, dropped a line and picked up a couple of black drum and mangroves. On the third drop, I left it toward the bottom and decided to investigate that aforementioned surface activity.

I flipped my trusty Spook Jr. out and immediately got nailed by a snook, and then the fun began. Every cast was getting blown up on and, in the end, I missed a dozen, hooked 14 and landed 11, all in the lower 20-inch to 24-inch range. Folks, this just doesn’t happen in Hernando county--at least not that I’ve heard. Just then, that line I’d been ignoring took off and I landed an inshore goliath grouper-what a day.

So, with a horrible beginning came a memorable ending. Paddling back, I tried to remember if I caught two or three small reds. Who knew it would matter later. Anyhow, I guess I’ll call it a 4-slam day (trout, red, snook) as well as black drum, sheepshead and mangrove snapper.

I think I’m going to like 2019 if this was any sign of things to come.

of incoming tide. Follow the crab traps going in. If most of the trap is covered, its safe to go and stick close to them--they are your guide to getting in. A word of caution, winter tides are negative tides and Double Branch has a shallow entrance. However, once inside there is plenty of water.

Fish the edges of the cuts and the deep side of the oyster bars. Live shrimp with a small split shot seems to work best for me.

Big Island flats, at the northwest end of the Howard Frankland bridge, has a deepwater channel between Big Island and the shore line. Although the charts show it as a one to two feet William & Mark Godfrey--nice sheepshead caught off Gandy Rocks. of depth, in truth the channel is over 10 feet deep with an old anuary can go two ways, depending on the barge lying on its side. This is an absolute favorite weather. So, based on the last few months, let’s of redfish, snook, trout and mangrove snapper.

The old barge sitting along the shore line start with an above average temperature scenario.

The snook will be along mangroves that have easy can only be seen during the winter months access to deep water in case the water temperature with the extra low tides. It’s a great hang out for sheepshead, mangrove snapper and redfish with starts to drop.

Double Branch, just north of the causeway a falling tide.

The radio towers, on the northwest side of boat ramp, stacks up with puppy drum, redfish, flounder and big trout. The best time is the start Gandy Bridge, is another hot spot with plenty of rocks and a deep-water canal within easy reach in case of a quick cold front. This is a great area for shore bound anglers from the end of the bridge west to where the mangroves start. This area has plenty of deep water which is a favorite of snook, trout, jacks and redfish.

Weedon Island will hold redfish and snook around the oyster bar at the entrance to Christmas Pass. Just outside in the deeper water flats in three to four feet, you can find some above average trout and flounder.

If the weather is cold, everything changes and you need to look for the fish around deep-water canals, hot water runoff around the power plants and rivers.

Silver trout will more than keep the average angler active.

Look for them in the main channel going

J

into the St. Petersburg power plant or the south side of the Port Tampa channel in about 30 to 40 feet. The big female sheepshead will have moved in from the Gulf to spawn in the deeper waters. I have the best results when the water temperature hits below 65 degrees. This may not be good for snook but it’s great for the big sheepshead.

Little Manatee river is a gold mine when the temperature drops below 65 degrees. Large schools of jacks will roam the river from the entrance all the way to the railroad bridge. Snook and redfish will hang around the points waiting for the bait getting pushed by the tides. Look for pot holes, an area where the tide has made a trench. I found some areas that drop as much as eight feet, and guess where the fish are staging--at the bottom of the pot holes.

Don’t worry about trying to catch the white bait (greenback sardines), as shrimp is the best winter bait--bar none. This is also one of the best times to fish with artificial baits. I found the scented ones, like Fisbites Lures, work the best.

Work them slowly along the edges/drop offs, or pitch them under a dock with a slow retrieve works best.

After all has been said, the key to some great fishing in January depends on the weather and water temperature. Low winter tides and wind make a perfect combination to fish the many canals in the Apollo Beach area. As the sun hits the docks and seawalls, it radiates the heat into the water acting as a radiant heater drawing bait fish to it, acting like a food court for the hungry redfish, sheepshead, snook and mangrove snapper.

FLATS TO NEARSHORE REPORT BY: CAPT. GARY BURCH

appy New Year 2019! Let’s get out that new fishing gear and accessories you got from Santa and put it to use.

Fishing forecast for January will find us dodging cold fronts in the Tampa Bay fishing area. Even with temperatures on the cold side, there will be nice sunny days that warm the waters on the inshore flats of Clearwater and Dunedin. This will be the time to get out and search your favorite trout and redfish areas.

The optimal condition for catching redfish and trout would be to have a high tide in the afternoon at the warmest part of the day. As the water moves up on the sun baked flats, it could be 3 to 5 degrees warmer. The fish will be more active in this warmer water and catching a

gator trout or an oversized redfish, should be a lot easier. There are some great days to be on the water during winter--timing is everything.

Use these cold fronts to your advantage. The fish will go on a feeding frenzy the day of or the day before a cold front blows through.

The winds will pick up from the south-south-west and increase the tidal movement in the bays and back waters. Check all the oyster bed points, mouths of back bays and openings to canals along the east side of the bay. Trout, redfish, ladyfish, bluefish, jacks, pompano and, maybe, snook will use these areas and the moving water to ambush their food.

Trout and redfish will be the targets in these cold-water conditions. When searching the warmer grass flat areas, I will be casting darker or root beer colored plastic tails on a 1/8-ounce jig head for both species. Remember to bounce your jig along the bottom very slowly. The fish are very lethargic in the colder water and will not move far for a meal. Using live

shrimp under a float, once the fish are found, is another effective way to catch trout and redfish.

Now, the water temperature will be consistently below 65, and most of the time around 60. St Joseph Sound and Clearwater will hold some of the biggest gator trout on the west coast of Florida.

The bigger trout will move into the bays and will hang around all winter until the water warms up in the spring. Locating the bigger trout is fairly easy, as they tend to congregate together in the grass flats that are adjacent to channels in both bays and inland waters. The big gator trout over 22 inches are a bit more difficult to find. They can be mixed in with the smaller schools or off on their own in another part of the bay. Searching different areas throughout the inland waters may pay off.

Redfish may be found back in the mangrove cuts near oyster beds, the channels leading to the back waters and around docks. They won’t always be schooled up in large numbers, so look for scattered reds

in the shallows. Remember, be very stealthy when approaching your redfish, they are extremely spooky this time of year. Throw a nice size, tail hooked shrimp when spotted--it will not be refused.

Don’t let the cold fronts keep you dry docked. Fishing is excellent in the winter. Pick your days and grab your jackets and come on out.

W

ith the water temps dropping into the low to mid 60’s, now is the time to focus on the big trout that have moved in. We all seem to overlook these inshore game fish. What I like to do is look for an area with multiple oyster bars with a small drop off around them. The trout will be sitting on the rocks/oysters sunning along with an occasional redfish. Throw a smaller weedless plastic or topwater up as close as you can get it to the oysters--then retrieve it back slowly. Remember, with the colder water temps, these fish are slower. So, you have to slow your retrieve down. Once you find where the schools are stacked up, just anchor up and continue to cast around that whole area. If you prefer to use live bait, smaller pinfish or select shrimp work great under a bobber this time of year.

With the negative tides in full effect, try to find areas that hold water during the lowest time of the tide. You should find all kinds of different species of fish from sheepshead,

redfish, trout, snapper and even flounder. Don’t be afraid to go into an area on the last hour or so of the outgoing tide. Let your boat sit in those pockets and wait it out until the tide turns, so you can get back out. Remember that fish are looking for any pockets of water this time of year, because the tides dry out their normal homes.

Another place not to overlook are your local canals and docks. They are plentiful with different species of fish, and the canals are usually a couple of degrees warmer than the open water.

Try to leave snook alone, if possible, this time of year due to them being the most sensitive to these colder water temps. If you hook one, try to handle it with the best possible care. We do not need our fishery to get hurt like we had in the past from the hard freezes.

S

heepshead have made their way into Tampa Bay bridges and docks. They are well known for their dominant presence during the winter months, and historically peak in numbers during February. They can be found at any of the St. Petersburg bridges, docks, seawalls and jetties. I always head to my favorite mangrove snapper spots this time of year to find them.

Sheepshead desire the same structure and environment as mangrove snapper. Most of the time when fishing these areas, you will catch more sheepshead than snapper, just because of their great numbers during these months.

Choice baits to use are live shrimp and fiddler crabs. These baits should be presented on a size 1/0 hook free-lined or with a split shot. An alternative would be your favorite 1/8-1/4-ounce jig-head. Where there’s one there are a bunch. Keeping count is important when catching these

guys, because you can fill a cooler quick when the bite is right.

Another species to target this month are spotted seatrout. These hungry shallow water predators can be found stacked up anywhere that has a drop in depth adjacent to a sandbar or sandy patches and potholes on grass flats. Take advantage of the mild water temperatures, as the fish are more active. Baits I use for spotted seatrout are scaled sardines and live shrimp. Both baits are presented on a size 1/0 hook freelined. You can sight cast or drift fish these baits. Livingston Lures Schoolmaster or Trout Master gold colored spade tale grub are my top choice artificials to use if you desire to cover a large area in a small amount of time.

If you’re fishing the bay side of St. Petersburg, I recommend stopping at “Mitch’s Bait and Tackle” off of 62nd Ave and 4th St. Mitch always has everything you need for a good day of fishing.

This amendment would, if approved, allow state management in future years and would provide flexibility to the Gulf states to set the recreational red snapper fishing season and potentially other management measures. To provide additional opportunities for the public to comment on this proposal, FWC is also holding public workshops on state management of Gulf red snapper.

Surprising Winter is the Best Planting Time

I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly

at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth.

There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point.

Second, the fruit just taste

better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature.

Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant. Let’s Grow Together.
