else, here are a few tips to help you hook and land more tripletail. • Cruise Carefully: Floating at the surface and doing its best to imitate a garbage bag, a tripletail is easy to spot once you develop an eye for it. Run a trap line on plane with a dedicated spotter and you can cover water quickly to locate “trips.” However, you’ll put fish down if you wake them too hard. Stay at least 30 feet off a trap line or channel markers while prospecting. When you spot a fish, give it a few minutes to settle and come back to the surface while you bring the boat around to approach with the trolling motor. A tripletail at ease on the surface is an easy fish to target. • Consider Your Eyewear: Obviously, polarized glasses are a must when sight fishing anything. The color of your lenses matters, too. It’s worth investing in a couple of good pairs so you can switch out according to conditions. Gray or blue works best in clear water. In dingy water, go with copper or rose lenses. • Stay Rigged and Ready: If you’re targeting trout, redfish or whatever, keep a tripletail rig on hand and keep an eye out for them when you’re running to a new spot. A good basic rig is a popping cork with a short 20-pound fluorocarbon leader of a foot or less and a 2/0 circle hook. Live shrimp is best, but if you’re fishing artificials, a DOA shrimp or a Gulp! shrimp or crab will also work. • On Approach: Come at your quarry from down-current and cast well past it so that your bait drifts back in front of its nose. If that cork starts to dance, give it a few seconds before coming tight. Tripletail have small, hard mouths and you want to be sure the fish has taken the bait. • Fish Small Baits: The reason a tripletail is hanging out on that marker is to eat the small crabs and shrimp that live there. They’re used to small food and have small mouths, which is why they’ll sometimes reject big shrimp. Pitch small or medium shrimp to them or small baitfish and lures no longer than about 2.5 inches. • Stick With Them: If a tripletail spooks or goes down, it usually isn’t going far. Try drifting an unweighted bait on a longer 4- or 5-foot leader that will get down deeper on a long drift past your structure. If that doesn’t work, t will soon be the time of year when everyone’s favorite oddball, the go hit your next mark and come back later. There’s a good chance the fish will tripletail, starts moving in closer to shore to hang out on structure or free- be sunbathing happily on the surface when you return. floating debris. Whether you actively sight fish them by running a line of traps and markers or if you just happen to see one while pursuing something For more tips and tricks, visit coastalanglermag.com.

xperienced boaters know that even a tiny bit of air in a vessel’s hydraulic steering system can compromise performance, response and steering effort. However, the process of correctly bleeding the system—whether performing maintenance or installing new hydraulic steering on a boat—could be messy and challenging to do correctly. Not to mention that it is a two-person job, with one at the helm and one back at the steering cylinder. Marine steering leader Dometic has forever solved this problem with its Power Purge Jr., a self-contained system that makes it easy for one person to fill and bleed 100 percent of the air out of any SeaStar hydraulic steering system in 10 minutes or less. This system comes in its own sturdy carrying case and includes a blue helm hose, clear cylinder hose, helm adapter and battery connectors. All that’s required from the boater is a wrench to open the bleeder valves and 5 quarts of SeaStar hydraulic fluid. This system uses the boat’s battery power to quickly fill the entire system with fluid and fully remove even the smallest air bubbles—helping WWW.DOMETIC.COM boaters get back on the water fast.

your veins. Then, bam! The tarpon puts on a show, soaring into the air with moves like no other. It’s a show that leaves even the most seasoned anglers wide-eyed. Those silver kings? They’re not just strong; they’re the rockstars of Islamorada. Now, let’s talk strategy. These tarpon are known for their spontaneity, so patience is your best friend. When it comes to bait, think live mullet or crabs–the kind of irresistible treats that tarpon just can’t resist. Toss your bait in front of where you think they could be, let it drift back in the current, and patiently watch the magic unfold. When your line starts to load, get ready for a ride. Keep that tension steady, brace yourself for some serious speed, and be prepared for tarpon acrobatics. It’s like a rollercoaster on water, and trust me, you’ll want to savor every twist and turn. When they jump, it’s important to bow your rod toward them to give them the slack so the hook doesn’t pull out. As you get closer to that leader touch or face grab, remember, gentle is the name of the game. Tarpon have delicate mouths, and going all WWE on them might end in heartbreak. If you’re going out with a guide, I recommend booking more than one day to give yourself better odds of landing a tarpon. So come late February through March, and the stage will be set for a front-row seat to Islamorada’s Silver King show. To book a charter, visit www.beansportfishing.com

Every year, people travel from all over the world to this gem and gear up for one of their ultimate bucket-list fish, the notorious “Silver King.” Hooking a tarpon is like a dance with a silver giant. Catch South Florida’s
D
own in South Florida, the influx of exotic species is crazy. Most people know about peacock bass and snakeheads, but clown knifefish are a lesser-known exotic that are a blast to catch. You might see these fish rolling on the surface, but they’re tough to catch due to their intelligence. Clown knifefish are silver in color with black spots along their tail. These fish have a very unique shape that almost resembles the blade of a knife. Their faces are similar to snook or a tarpon, but they have a huge shoulder right behind their eyes.
4 FLORIDA
FEBRUARY 2024
These fish have a similar texture to freshwater trout, as they have micro scales and a slime coating that makes them smooth to the touch. A fun fact, since their anal fin and tail fin are conjoined, it allows them to undulate and actually swim backward. If you get one boat-side, watch as they back away from the net. Clown knives are native to southeast Asia. Their popularity as aquarium fish has led to their spread because they quickly outgrow most home aquariums and are released. These fish like warm water, and they are bimodal air-breathers, which means they surface to gulp air if the water is too stagnant. This makes them well-suited to the swamps, lakes, canals and backwater rivers of South Florida. Juveniles school together and hide in roots of plants. When they grow larger, they become solitary but still hunt from the cover of aquatic vegetation. Clown knifefish spawn in the spring. Research suggests they prefer three straight days of rain before laying and fertilizing eggs. When the time is right, the female lays eggs on a root or some other secure surface. The male then tends the eggs. Even after the eggs hatch, the male will guard the fry until they are large enough to be on their own. These fish are nocturnal. The best time to catch them is at night, or at dusk or dawn. When the sun is up, they seek refuge under structure or in thick mats of vegetation. Clown knifefish are aggressive ambush predators. If you walk canal banks at night, you can see their eyes glowing in the beam of a flashlight. I’ve found the fishing is always best after a rain, as it gets them frenzied. I use live bait like shiners or shad and freeline them near flowing pipes or in fast-moving canals. If knifefish are there, you’ll see them rolling on the surface. I use a small live bait hook on a 20-pound leader, since they do have sharp teeth. For artificials, a 2- to 3-inch white swimbait or a jig will work. An exciting option is to fish a white topwater frogs at night. Remember, when they get to the bank the fight isn’t over. They always come up to say hi, and then quickly back away into the darkness. The current IGFA all-tackle world record is 14-pound, 8-ounce fish caught from Florida’s Lake Ida in 2018 by Michael Donvito.

COASTAL ANGLER TREASURE COAST EDITION Serving outdoors enthusiasts in Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties.
FWC FRESHWATER ANGLER
FISHING TECHNIQUES: SMALL BOATS
F
lorida is loaded with small waters that are ideal for small boats! Not only are small craft incredibly versatile, but they can also put an angler where a bass boat or shore angler just can’t go. Most anglers have noticed that fishing access seems to be getting harder to find due to a variety of factors. The childhood swimming hole is now a shopping mall. The FWC is working hard to buck that trend by preserving existing access sites while at the same time opening up new opportunities. However, many smaller waters simply never had a ramp at all. Or maybe the budget won’t allow for a boat and trailer. You might have the money, but not the parking space. Despite this, anglers can help to broaden their fishing horizons by— thinking small! Small boats, that is. Which we’ll define, for the purposes of this article, as boats that can be car-topped or stowed in a trunk or pickup bed, and launched by hand. For an average adult, the maximum manageable weight will be around 70 pounds or less, depending on the individual (and check with your doctor first!). All the situations mentioned are where smaller craft can really shine. Below are the most common types, their pros and cons, and accessories to consider.
FLOAT TUBES
Float tubes are the relative newcomers on the small-craft scene, and in Florida should be fished from
all the small craft mentioned here, and familiarize yourself with recommended safety precautions at FWC’s Living with Alligators and Crocodiles website. (https://myfwc.com/conservation/ you-conserve/wildlife/gators) A float tube is basically an inner tube with a seat harness. More advanced designs are more streamlined, some even resembling miniature Zodiac-style inflatable boats. Room for gear is obviously limited, with onboard pouches for holding a couple smaller tackle packs or other gear. Accessories to consider include small fins for maneuvering, and a strapon rod holder. The primary advantage of the float tube is that it’s the smallest type of boat around— only one step removed from swimming— and can require almost no storage space. The disadvantages include your low profile (definitely not a craft for motorboat waters), slow movement speed . . . and alligators. Prices start at about $80.
INFLATABLES
“Rubber rafts” have been around for a while on the modern boating scene. They’re the lightest craft you can actually sit in, and only require deflating before tossing back in the trunk. If TrophyCatch participant Cliff Willis proves you’re going to purchase one for fishing, go with that you can catch big fish with a float one of the models designed for that purpose. tube with this 12 lbs. 4 oz. bass! They’ll usually be more maneuverable than PHOTO COURTESY of FWC Freshwater Angler. your standard “life raft” inflatable, and often . . . very cautiously! The first thing to be said here incorporate rod holders and other angleris to pick a site where you don’t see any alligators, friendly features. Even more expensive models and then remain constantly vigilant—though you’ll want to exercise some extra caution with SEE SMALL BOATS.............................PAGE 15

What do the ratings mean? POOR day basically means the fish will either steal all your bait or will not even touch your line. FAIR day means that you catch one or two fish but you will have to work hard to do so. GOOD day means that you will catch enough fish to feel gratified. BEST day means that you will catch something almost every time you cast your line in the water. SOURCE: The Old Farmers’ 2024 Almanac

SNOOK SEASON OPENS FEBRUARY 1
E
ffective January 1, 2024, new snook management regions were established. The new regions are part of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) holistic management approach for Florida’s most popular inshore fisheries. Through this approach, seven metrics are used to evaluate the fishery by region, adding a holistic perspective to management decisions and allowing the FWC to be more responsive to regional concerns. The seasons, bag limits and slot limits are set in response to evaluations of the snook fishery within each of the new management regions. This new management approach includes annual reviews of the fishery, and snook regulations could be changed each year in response to the reviews.

HOW FLORIDA’S SNOOK PERMIT BENEFITS FLORIDA’S SNOOK POPULATION
exclusively for programs to benefit the snook population. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) scientists conduct research and monitoring activities focused on improving the quality of biological and fisheries data being collected on common snook to ensure that these magnificent fish continue to thrive in Florida’s bays and estuaries for generations to come. Major Programs Funded by the Snook Permit fee are: • Stock Enhancement - Researchers are testing techniques to spawn snook in hatcheries for stock enhancement purposes. • Snook Tagging Program - Biologists monitor the movements, habitat use, and survival of adult snook tagged with external dart tags, as well as with internal ultrasonic transmitters (also known as acoustic tags). • Fisheries-Independent Sampling - Biologists conduct monthly sampling in four Florida estuaries where common snook are typically abundant: Tampa Bay, Charlotte Harbor, and the southern and northern portions of the Indian River Lagoon. • Fisheries-Dependent Sampling - This project involves researchers collecting snook-related information through creel, or angler surveys and through an anglerbased logbook program. To learn more about snook biology and research projects conducted by FWRI, visit their snook page.
Per 379.354(8)(c) of the Florida Statutes, revenue generated from the sale of snook permits is used
If you would like to continue to support these snook programs, please purchase a snook permit.

inds, waves, and currents will once again shape the offshore playing field of the coming days. February will continue to host the arrival of offshore weather making events that will be directly connected to the movements of local and migratory fish populations, just east of our St. Lucie Inlet. Snapper fishing will continue to be on the top of the offshore strategy, decision list for bottom fishing meat hunters. The “go to” zone for most species of snapper will be between 50 to 80 feet of water. Also, as seas remain choppy but “fishable” out of the north and east, offshore anglers will angle towards reefs close to shore and slightly north of the St. Lucie Inlet. Martin County’s exceptional, offshore artificial reef program has set in place over 75 reef structures within 3 to 6 nautical miles, just offshore of our inlet. Old barges, concrete culverts and bridge spans, inlet dredging spoils, and prefabricated “reef makers” (just to name a few) make up the majority of these artificial reef structures and have become home to a large, diversified body of fish, both resident and pelagic, especially

snapper. Lane, mangrove, vermilion, yellowtail, cubera, and mutton snapper are regularly caught by local anglers around these structures. Lane snappers are probably the most abundant of all and can be found in large numbers this month. Anchoring the boat, above and around these reefs, will enable anglers using all varieties of cut bait, on 30- to 50-pound tackle to enjoy snapper catching success. These reefs not only attract snapper and other species of bottom dwellers, but also a wide array of pelagic fish that are normally associated with the upper layers of the water column, like king mackerel, dolphin, bonito, sailfish, and cobia. These artificial reefs become attractive devices for all species of saltwater fish as they provide the foundation for the smallest organisms to adhere to and grow, thus setting the ecosystem in motion as smaller fish are attracted by the food and cover offered by these structures. In turn, bigger fish that prey on the smaller organisms, find their way to these reefs and as a result, begin to propel the food chain into action. These reefs are well documented and published GPS coordinates for them can be found by visiting martinreefs.com. Like all offshore fishing months, February will continue the need for captains and crews to pay close attention to daily weather forecasts when planning the day’s offshore adventure. By closely monitoring wind velocity/direction and tide schedules at the inlet, anglers will be able to consistently make safe decisions, regarding the limitations of their boats and crews, that will ultimately lead to successful offshore fishing trips during the days of February.

ompano fishing should be at its peak this month on the Treasure Coast. Inshore fishing on sandy flats can produce pompano limits if you’re in the right area. Bait fishing with sand fleas on anchor is the best way to catch the most fish, but drifting along the flats can also work well casting small Goofy jigs. Expect a lot of jacks, ladyfish, and bonefish
in between pompano bites. Snook fishing has been okay when using live pilchards around structure. Bottom fishing has been good using live shrimp along the Indian River. This style of fishing produces good numbers of sheepshead, blackdrum, redfish, snapper, croaker, pompano, jacks, ladyfish, and the occasional flounder. Fish Finder rigs, weighted jig heads, and or Knocker rigs will work well for said species, weights vary based on current for the area you will be fishing and depth. Nearshore fishing remains strong for Spanish mackerel and bluefish along Peck Lake and north to Vero Cove. Find the boats, find the fish. Casting shiny jigs and or spoons will produce plenty of bites. I suggest a 3/8-ounce Tsunami glass minnow jig. Fast retrieve is a must, adding

fish are spread out trolling gives you the advantage by covering more area. When a definite condition appears and there is an area where fish are congregating or migrating through, live bait will probably be more effective. Swordfishing is typically pretty good this time of year and 2024 is no exception. There have been on a number of small fish being caught,

2024 might not have started out with huge numbers or massive fronts, but fishing has been good enough that we still all have hope. Bodies of fish on either side of us should provide consistent action from sails, blackfin, kingfish, little tunny, along with the occasional wahoo and what is quickly becoming even rarer, mahi mahi. Anyone who has been fishing here for any length of time will agree that the dolphin fishing is worse than it’s ever been both in size of the fish and numbers being seen and caught. Without going into it to deeply, please know, I am all for keeping a few fish for dinner and even giving a few fillets away to friends and family, but 10 fish person and the commercial limits they allow are way too generous. The dolphin population may be thriving in the Pacific, but in the Atlantic, it’s in bad shape. Please take it upon yourself and fish responsibly. As much as I disagree with some of the rules preventing and restricting limits of some species, I am equally opposed to limits allowing the exploitation of others. Sometimes, even though the speed limit is 65, it’s up to the driver to limit themselves when they see adverse condition or potential issue. Please do the same with our fisheries and limit your catches to a responsible amount. With a species
wire leaders is optional, this will reduce the number of lost lures for the day. Surf fishing for pompano has been great along local beaches using pompano rigs with sand fleas. Surf fishing this month is even providing us with some nice permit too! Also let’s keep an eye out for rays and turtles along the beaches this time of year, they can have migrating schools of cobia nearby. Cobia jigs on a medium heavy rod rigged and ready can yield a bonus cobia when you are traveling to and from the mackerel grounds. Remember cobia now have to measure 36-inches fork length to keep and 1 per person with a 2 fish vessel limit. Download the Fish Rules app on your phone to stay up to date on current rules and regulations for your specific region.

along with some true exotics. We caught an 80-pound escolar on January 1 with Fred Church which was the very first one I’ve ever had the pleasure of encountering, and what an incredible specimen. Tuna fishing isn’t going off yet but there are wahoos over in the Bahamas so if the weather allows

like dolphin, it’s especially easy to fish responsibly limiting your female take and trying to let them go, promoting the procreation of the species. That being said, the variety of species the Treasure Coast offers in February rivals anywhere in the world. For any of the above species fish depths from 65-to-365 on average, focusing on color changes, weed lines, current edges and over structure. Our Six and Eight Mile Reefs both are migratory highways for all species moving down our coast this time of year. Look for mid-water bait around structure, flying fish and pieces of debris for areas to concentrate on. Both trolling and live baiting are very effective this time of year but when

elcome to February fishing! Some cold fronts have helped drop the water temperatures and the offshore bite is heating up. This month brings lots of options for winter fishing but weather still plays a significant role and the windy days have certainly been outnumbering the fishable days. Staying on top of weather reports is essential so you can take advantage of all the good weather windows that do come along. I highly recommend bottom fishing as a top strategy since the snapper bite remains constant and should continue on the nearshore reefs as well as the 50–80-foot reefs. Mangroves, lanes, and muttons have been filling up the fish boxes and

providing great pullin’ drag fun, along with some good size triggerfish. Sheepshead, pompano, and drum have arrived and are biting very well on live shrimp. I recommend stirring up these bottom feeders by using a chum bag. We are noticing some trouble with jacks and sharks so be
sure to reel fast and steady to get your dinner safely in the boat. It pays to keep an eye out for tripletail and cobia especially when you find any floating debris. Tripletail can find shelter under the smallest piece of debris and can even change colors just slightly enough to blend
in. While they are opportunistic feeders, it’s best to use their favorite live shrimp or crab with no weight and cast a few feet in front then slowly reel back to you. Once they take the bait, be prepared for a tugof-war since these pelagics are strong and smart. Keeping a pitch rod ready will help you take advantage of any tripletail dinner opportunity you may come across. Snook season opens the first of this month and avid anglers everywhere will be in search of the elusive “slots.” The slot is a length of not less than 28 inches and no more than 32 inches. Best bait choices are live pilchards, pinfish, croakers, and select shrimp. Drifting the Fort Pierce Inlet on both incoming and outgoing tides will provide significant chances for success. There’s always great food and great music at my home base of Little Jim Bait & Tackle so come on over North Bridge for a visit. Valentine’s day will be here soon and my tip is to book a trip on Pullin Drag and find out for yourself why we love fishing in the Fort! Years of experience fishing these local waters and the fishiest charter boat in the area as my “office,” means you’ll be fishing AND catching. One trip is all it will take to LOVE Pullin Drag!

hat a winter it has been! This El Nino weather pattern we have been dealing with has made some very challenging conditions throughout the Treasure Coast. If it’s not blowing 20-plus, the temperatures are fluctuating 10-to-15 degrees every third day. It should have peaked through January and hopefully we are moving into better conditions for the start of our spring patterns. Snook season opens this month and I’m sure most of the anglers on the Treasure Coast are looking forward to them being back on the menu. Look for snook in deeper waters until the temperatures start to climb back into the 70s. The inlet,
both north and south bridge, and the boils are all great places to target snook when the water is on the cooler side. Live baits like pinfish, pigfish, large shrimp, and croakers are all great snook baits. I have become a big fan of the Thumper Shrimp around the bridges at night. Bouncing them off the bottom around the tide changes has been producing some great action with shorts to overslots. On the calmer days this month, working the first reef in 10-to-30 feet can provide some great action. For fast paced rod bending action the reef is hard to beat. Live or frozen shrimp, or sand fleas fished on a ⅜-to-½ ounce jighead is a great way to target most of the species. You will encounter everything from sheepshead, snapper, pompano, permit, and more. One thing you will certainly encounter is a plethora of short mutton snapper. Anchoring just off the edge of the reef in the sand and fishing bigger baits like cut greenies, or sardines will increase the

size of the muttons. Your bite count will go down drastically but getting the bigger fish are worth the effort. The Spanish mackerel will be a little further north up by Vero Cove. Not only are they fun to catch on light tackle, they make great table fare when taken care of properly. Spanish
have a hard time resisting Gulfstream flash minnows either trolled or casted under the birds. February will provide plenty of fishing opportunities on the Treasure Coast. A solid plan before you leave the dock is a great way to maximize your day on the water.

s January is behind us hopefully some of the weather will be too. This has been one of the windier Januarys and definitely wetter as well, which has hampered some of the fishing. Fish from 40 feet to 60 feet and also 80 feet to 100 feet for lane, snapper, triggerfish and porgies. It is a good time to be able to take friends and family who don’t normally fish, especially kids, as the fish are a lot easier to catch fish with a two hook, a.k.a. chicken rig with a sinker on the bottom 12 inches up on a dropper loop one hook, and 12 inches above that on a dropper loop with a second. Bait with squid strips, grunt fillet strips, or any other type of fresh cut bait fish directly on the bottom on the highest pieces of the structure and you will enjoy some nonstop action. This time of year, we will continue to pick away at some mutton and some mango snappers on the deeper ledges in 80 to 120 feet of water fishing with finger mullet, large mud minnows, grunt plugs and even long strips of bonito. For the mutton snapper, continue to use 40-to-60-pound leaders, preferably fluorocarbon 15 to 30 foot in length.

eports from local inshore anglers have been positive since air and water temps have dropped in east central Florida. Trout and redfish numbers this winter are much better than we have seen in the last decade. It would be nice if these better catches stem from a resurgence of seagrass in the lagoon, but more likely, they could also be a product of colder weather than we have seen in recent years pushing these fish into our area from their more northern ranges in the Carolinas.

f January’s cold water has done its job, it’s moved fish in close. We should see some good bottom fishing, I always look for the mutton snapper to show up in the 85-and-90-foot reefs, along with lots of lane snapper and triggerfish. If the water’s cold and clear, in the low 70s and you can see 30 feet down, anchor rope, live bait and fluorocarbon leader is well worth the time and money. We start the morning throwing the cast net for silver bait; thread fins and pilchards are my favorite. They’ll entice a bite on the bottom sometimes when nothing else works. If the water’s stirred up a dirty green, any cut bait works well. As the shark and goliath population grows, you’re going to learn to crank fast or you’re not going to get your fish. There are places we don’t even try to fish anymore because the goliath grouper will get under the boat and eat every
good fish you hook. The sharks are just as bad. Don’t get discouraged, sometimes it’s better to up the size of your leader an extra 20# and put the heat to them. We call it stop them or pop them. Hopefully they’ll open up a harvest on them and get them under control so we’ll get where our sea bass populations can make a comeback. Think about it! Ever wonder where the sea bass went? Look for a few cobia to show up, I usually check the artificial reefs in the 65-to-70 foot area. Keep your eyes peeled to water for floating debris, February is a good time to find tripletail hiding sometimes under something no bigger than a coconut. Even if you’re headed offshore it’s good to have a light spinner 15# mono line rigged and ready to pitch for that tripletail. If the water clears in close enough look for some big kings 40-to-60 foot. I like large threadfins or even better an 7-inch or 9-inch blue runner. Remember, big fish, big bait and a bigger hook too. On a 7-inch bait, I’ll use a #4 or #5 wire up my hook from a #3 treble to a #4 and use two, one in the front and a trailer hook threequarters of the way to the tail. This can be slow trolled 2 to 3 knots on cover ground or drifted if you’re in a good area.

For those going deep there should still be a few dolphin, wahoo and blackfin tuna or sailfish to be caught. Look for color and temp changes in the120-to-240-foot range. I try to include as many details as I can, but If there’s something you feel would be helpful to you, please drop
me an email to captwildey@bellsouth. net. I’ll try to put it in my next report. Please, if you’re on the water, be safe, be courteous and remember, some of us our just trying to make a living out there, but we’re all out there to have fun. “Fish On, Gotta Go!”

We pull ours off Cannon downriggers and they make it so much easier. The 10TS is an amazing motor with Bluetooth capabilities so I can operate them from the tower or anywhere else on the boat. I have lived here since early 80s and historically speaking February has always been a great month. While still very worthwhile and highlighted by a few great days, it does seem that spring and summer is slowly becoming a more productive time of year. We will take note again in 2024 as they’re right around the corner but either way, I’m looking forward to calmer weather. Please give me a call to schedule your Treasure Coast, Florida fishing adventure. I hope your next trip is Off The Chain! Thanks!

Try fishing for pompano along channel edges near your favorite inlet. I like launching the kayak at Sawfish Park in Jupiter. Pompano jigs, D.O.A. There are also inflatable canoes and kayaks, which we’ll keep here in the “inflatables” category. These are more maneuverable and faster than standard inflatable boats, but less stable and more expensive. If you go with an inflatable boat, an electric air pump is an absolute must. Make sure it will plug into a cigarette lighter or has 12-volt battery clips. A foot pump works and is better than huffing and puffing, but will still wear you out, especially with a bigger boat. An emergency patch kit is another accessory to keep on board. Expect to start at around $100 for an inflatable boat, or $200 to $300+ for fishing-specific, canoe, or kayak models. Inflatables that can mount a transom or swivel seats will start at around $500.
KAYAKS
Kayaks have been around for centuries and are possibly the most versatile small craft on our list. Many of today’s offerings are tough but lightweight, and the most graceful and efficient man-powered watercraft you can get. For most pond and lake work (and even some
a 10’ to 12’ model will work well. While preferences vary, most users will probably find a “sit-on-top” model easier to paddle (and get in and out of) than the “sit-in” style. Make sure you purchase a fishingspecific kayak that incorporates rod holders and tackle storage. Fishing kayaks are also usually wider and more stable than standard touring kayaks, an important feature. And if there’s one thing experienced kayakers agree on, it’s this: fork out the extra dollars for a lightweight paddle (such as the carbon fiber models)—your arms will thank you at the end of a long day. Selfpropelled (pedal) models are also available, but sacrifice some storage space for the propeller mechanism and cost and weigh significantly more. Selecting a kayak is a more personal choice than for most other watercraft, and for this reason some shops offer free demo days so that a prospective buyer can find a model that is comfortable and feels right. Cost starts at about $300 to well over $1,000 for some self-propelled models, but the average kayak will run $400 to $500. Consider paying for an introductory paddling class along with your new purchase, as well.

recently had a stretch of tough fishing days that called for a thorough covering of a cove to find what I was looking for. Over the next few paragraphs, I’ll cover what changes I made that saved the day, and I think you will see the logic in my decision and possibly implement this method when you find yourself in a slow-bite situation. Keep in mind, I typically don’t have the patience to utilize this approach, as it is very methodical, leaving no stone unturned, so to speak, but it can and did pay off. During a normal wade, I only target the sweet zones, but when they are not there or not feeding, I map out a deliberate path where I cover every inch of the area, twice. Depending on whether I start from the shore or from offshore via a boat or kayak, I will choose a direction to wade. For this example, let’s say I walked in and started from the bank. I will slowly walk out to the maximum depth I want to fish casting to my right, left and straight ahead. I vary my retrieve speed, depth and action throughout until I find what the fish are looking for. Once I reach the farthest point I want to cover, I make a 90-degree turn and walk about the distance of a long cast as I continue casting right, left, and straight ahead. Once I reach that point, I turn another 90 degrees and head back toward the shore repeating the same casting process. One direction will be covering the same water I just fished but from a different angle. At times, this can make a difference and entice the bite, depending on how they are staged on the structure or the direction they are swimming through the area. Once my cast has reached the shore, I may decide to change lure size or type. Once again, I turn 90 degrees and repeat the process. During a tough bite, you need to pull out all the stops. This is not the time to be stuck in a rut of what typically works or what your favorite fishing style may be. It’s important to change your retrieve style and speed. Don’t let a slow bite convince you that inactive fish will only eat a slowly presented lure. Many times, a faster erratic retrieve is what gets them to strike. Cover the gamut and see what works. I rarely use this method, as it is tedious. However, if I have high confidence in the area and the fish are inactive or possibly deeper or shallower than I anticipated, working methodically has paid off, and I learn something new each time it does. Take a kid, and even a tough day of catching will still be a good day of fishing.

TIPS FROM A PRO
FISH TOPWATER TO LOCATE SPAWNERS
Shallow flats adjacent to deeper water are preferred spawning grounds, and a topwater is one of my favorite ways to cover water and locate productive areas. At its core, the C-Hawk 25cc is a hard-core workhorse with a 300 horsepower maximum that will take you anywhere you need to go. Its 9’6” beam allows it to float in very skinny water with just a 12” draft, and it is also extremely stable, which should appeal for bottomfishing, diving and any other pursuit where a stable platform is preferred.
“We can mix and match consoles, fish boxes, full transoms, cut transoms, bare hulls… you name it,” Grubbs said. “There are some recreational guys adding towers and sight fishing for cobia, and such. Everything we do is built around keep it simple, keep it efficient, keep it easy to maintain, keep it cost effective to own and operate. They are all unique… no cookie cutter trailer queens here. BLITZING BASS INVADE
EARLY SEASON ESTUARIES By Nick Carter
S
triped bass are king along the crags and marshes of the Massachusetts North Shore, and each year around the first week of May something very interesting takes place. They call it the early season in this stretch of coastline north of Boston, and it can bring on some of the fastest action of the year. All the baitfish—the herring, the sand eels, the silversides and bunker— push into the estuaries in search of warmer water temperatures. Big schools of striped bass move in with them. It leads to classic bass blitzes, when pods of stripers push bait up to boil on the surface as birds hammer them from above.
You can bet Matt Zimmerman, owner of Back Eddy Charters out of Beverly, Mass., will be there in the middle of the melee standing in the water waving a stick in the air. “I fly fish pretty much everywhere for everything, but it’s better early season,” he said. “You can use a slower presentation, mimic smaller baits, and cover the water column a lot better with a fly.” Historically, the pattern produced 40-fish days of smaller 14- to 26-inch stripers, known as “schoolies.” However, recent years have seen an uptick in larger 26- to 30-inch fish in the early season. “That’s great for fishing, but it’s not a great sign for the fishery,” Zimmerman said. If you haven’t heard, fisheries managers are scrambling to prop up Atlantic striper populations. Since 2019, striper reproduction on the Eastern Seaboard has been dismal due to weather conditions. Emergency action reduced the recreational limit to one fish in a slot limit from 28 to 31 inches, and more restrictive measures may be on the horizon. “The regs? I’m all catch and release, so it hasn’t impacted me too much,” Zimmerman said. “They’re trying to get the stocks up, but most of what we’re seeing is slot fish and up.” That’s not necessarily the case in the early season, which Zimmerman said is a time when you can just park the truck and wade in. “Most of the time I fish from a boat,” he said. “But early season, when there’s lots of fish in the river, it’s easier and you can catch more fish wading from shore.” Zimmerman fishes 5- to 8-weight rods and leaders of straight 20- or 30-pound monofilament. Intermediate sinking lines allow for good depth control, and a handful of Clousers and Deceivers are all you need. Zimmerman suggested 4- to 6-inch patterns and colors of green/white, yellow/white and gray/white. The fishing is best on the last three hours of an outgoing tide or the first couple hours of an incoming tide, when the bait moves around and incites feeding activity. This river bite is Zimmerman’s go-to pattern for about a month, after which he’ll move out to the beaches and rocky islands, where huge stripers herd bait and slam 6- to 8-inch Hollow Fleyes. Find Matt Zimmerman on Instagram @backeddycharters.

OFF VENICE By Capt. Quinlyn Haddon
E
arly in my career, I fished out of Venice, Louisiana. On off days, we fished inshore and roadside, which produced incredible catches like bull reds, 100-pound alligator gar and 70-pound blue cats. It was nothing to complain about, but my heart is always offshore. The offshore fishing off Venice is topnotch for yellowfin tuna, wahoo, marlin and swordfish, but the gas bill was too much for me to get out there as anything but crew. One evening, I was invited on an offshore trip and was told I got to plan the route. I ecstatically hit my Hilton’s offshore report to check the salinity chart and decided to hit an overlooked rig called Moxie. We headed out the next morning, caught bait and arrived at the rig. This rig sits in shallower waters and is a bit off the path for rig hopping, so it is often passed by. I was surprised to see another boat when we arrived. The bottom machine lit up with giant marks, and we tossed out our baits. I was running the deck and focused on the back of the boat, but I kept hearing the captain comment on the other boat. It seemed like they were diving, but they didn’t have a dive flag up. I heard him say the boat looked to be sitting

low in the water. All of a sudden, Capt. Travis Mayeux started screaming, “LINES IN, LINES IN!” I was reeling everything up as quickly as I could when he pushed the boat to full throttle. I wasn’t sure what was going on until I had the lines secured and I turned around. The motors of the other boat had gone under, and the bow reached for the sky before slipping away. The boat sank in seconds. By the time we got to the scene, most of the flotsam had been carried away by the currents. We rescued the spearfishermen, one Pelican case and a fish bag. We ended our trip and took the spearfishers back to the dock. Their wallets and keys sank offshore, so they called Plaquemines Parish Sheriff ’s Office to get into their truck. The deputy ran their names, and one of them had an outstanding warrant. He was taken to jail for the weekend. It was a rough day for those guys, but it could have been much worse. Fishing offshore oil rigs provides a false sense of security. You are still very much offshore even though you are near a structure. The crew on those rigs are not lifeguards and are not paying attention to you. Considering how quickly the debris dispersed and how unfished that rig was, those fellas were very lucky we were there that day. Capt. IT’S PRIME TIME
ON AMERICA’S HOTTEST BIG BASS LAKE By Nick Carter
I
f a truly giant largemouth bass is on your bucket list, make plans to visit O.H. Ivie Lake in Texas over the next few months. Last year, this 19,000acre impoundment of the Colorado River burst onto the scene as the hottest big bass lake in the nation. A string of 17 monster largemouths from January through April kept O.H. Ivie in the headlines, and 10 of them were caught in February. And when we say monster, we’re not talking about 8- to 10-pounders, we’re talking about 13-plus-pound behemoths. According to data from Toyota ShareLunker, Texas’ trophy bass recognition and breeding program, February is the time to catch a giant at this central Texas reservoir. Bass are at their heaviest and most aggressive ahead of the spawn, when they are fat, feeding and full of eggs. Last February’s incredible streak was highlighted by an enormous 17.03-pounder that is the lake record and the eighth largest bass ever caught in Texas. Jason Conn caught it on Feb. 13, 2023, and he said the fish was even heavier before it started regurgitating shad in his livewell. Moving into March and April last year, the trophy bass statistics were still pretty amazing—with 34 fish heavier than 8 pounds—but the giant fish tapered off. Five 13-plus-pounders were caught during those two months, and then no one registered another one until November, when Shawn Strength caught a 16.65-pound monster. The totals for 2023 were 75 fish heavier than 8 pounds and 18 heavier than 13 pounds. The true total is potentially much more impressive, because these statistics include only the fish anglers bothered to register with ShareLunker. So, why has the productivity of O.H. Ivie largemouth bass fishing exploded
over the last three or four years? According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, intensive stocking of bass with Florida-strain genetics is the secret ingredient. Florida strain genetics produce larger, faster-growing fish than the native-northern strain genetics in the system. Part of the mission of the ShareLunker program is to breed trophy fish, and they do this by using 13-plus-pounders caught by anglers in their breeding program. It is estimated 75 to 85 percent of the bass in O.H. Ivie possess those Florida genetics. On top of that, weather played a role in the lake’s rise. Following a prolonged drought, heavy rain in the fall of 2018 raised water levels by more than 30 feet. “It gave these bass pretty much unlimited food and space to grow,” said a ShareLunker representative, “and they just grew like crazy.” Stay tuned. It’ll be interesting to see what America’s hottest big bass lake produces over the next four months, especially with all the added angler attention that comes with a bright hot spotlight.
