Tampa Bay, A Jewel On

Florida’s Gulf Coast By Rosemary J. White

T

ampa Bay has some of the very best fishing in the state of Florida, which means it is some of the best fishing in the world. What makes Tampa Bay so unique is the many different varieties of both freshwater and saltwater fish to catch, as well as the many different ways to catch them. If you are not a boat person, Tampa offers the world’s longest fishing pier, the Old Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Here you can catch snook, tarpon, grouper, black sea bass, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, cobia, sheepshead, red snapper and pompano. That’s 10 species of highly desirable fish from just one location, without a boat! And if that list alone is not impressive enough, fishing the bridge is convenient, too. You’ll need some specialized gear, but once

6

you’ve got it you can drive right onto the pier to your exact sweet spot and unload. It’s also lit at night! There’s no limit as to what time of the day you can fish. Feel like delving into the ocean world a little deeper than a concrete bridge? Tampa Bay boasts the stunning Fort Desoto County Park. Here you can simply slip on a pair of old sneakers and wade into cerulean blue waters and lush seagrass beds. Sound surreal? It is. Wading is a stealthy approach to fishing. In addition to species from the list above, you can also catch redfish, trout and flounder. Looking to fish the deeper waters of the bay? About 45 miles out, the water depths start to reach the 80-foot range. Out here, the possibilities are endless. Varieties of grouper, assortments of snapper, arrays of sharks, blackfin tuna, sailfish, mahi, amberjack, jack crevalle, permit and bonita can be added to the previously mentioned lists of available species. What if you tend to lean more toward the fresh side? Tampa Bay has some of the most diverse freshwater fishing opportunities one can imagine. Use a kayak to quietly glide through the tannic waters of our creeks to catch largemouth bass that grow upwards of 10 pounds. The creeks also hold massive bluegills, crappie, toothy alligator gar, tilapia, catfish and carp. The secret to what makes our freshwater fishing so thrilling is that you never know what you are going to catch. You see, many of our saltwater species inhabit our freshwater, as well. It is not only possible, but it is common to catch a big largemouth and then five minutes later a 15-pound common snook. Tampa Bay offers a temperate climate, direct access to the Gulf of Mexico, artificial reefs, a unique slowly sloping continental shelf, and an abundance of freshwater feeds. From grass flats and mangrove systems in our inshore ecological system, to the deeper channels throughout the bay and Intracoastal Waterway, anglers have the opportunity to catch anything from sharks to Goliath grouper. The potential for the catch of a lifetime exists on every cast.

K

enneth Westerfeld was expecting a big blackfish when he set up on a solid, single-tug while wreck fishing out of Ocean City, Md. back in January of 2015. What he wasn’t expecting was a new International Game Fish Association (IGFA) world record at the end of the line.

“We were into big blackfish right off the bat,” explained the Queens, N.Y. angler, “and I knew immediately when I set the hook that this was a double-digit white chin. I got three quick turns on the reel and then all I could do was hold the rod high and tight while she dove for the wreck. More than half way to the top, however, she got a second wind and tore 40 feet of line from my drag, which was nearly locked tight. I couldn’t believe the power. That’s when I knew this one was more than special.” When the monstrous bulldog finally hit the deck, Westerfeld was stunned by its size. Back at Sunset Marina in Ocean City, the huge white chin officially tipped the scales at 28 pounds, 8 ounces. That blackfish, still the all tackle world record for the tough-lipped bottom feeders, was decked aboard Capt. Kane Bounds’ six-pack charter boat Fish Bound, a vessel on which Westerfeld has taken several ’teen-sized bulldogs over the years. “I’m convinced there’s even bigger blackfish in Maryland waters,” he said. “A couple of years ago, an experienced SCUBA diver reported seeing two giant blackfish on an offshore reef there—the smaller one he estimated at 30 pounds.” Capt. Kane agrees that bigger fish probably lurk in the 80- to 150-foot depths where he concentrates most of his blackfish efforts. “I think our ’tog have a little longer growing season than up north,” he reasoned. “That makes a difference with a fish that can live more than 30 years. In 2017 alone, we had five that broke the 20-pound mark. Three of those were released.” You’ll want to fish heavy in these waters if giant ’tog are your target. Bounds recommended conventional outfits with smooth drags and 50- to 60-pound test braided lines. He also goes big on hooks, choosing 5/0 and 6/0 sizes over more traditional 3/0 and 4/0 selections. Expect to need 8 to 12 ounces of lead to get to the bottom. Monster blackfish bite right through the winter months, with many of the largest fish decked each year in February, March and April. Westerfeld advised anglers looking for the blackfish of a lifetime to use fluorocarbon leaders no matter which rigs or hooks they choose. “Maryland’s waters are pretty clear in the winter and low visibility fluorocarbon leaders really provide an edge,” he said. “Seaguar’s 60-lb. test Blue Label fluorocarbon leaders have worked well for me. They have great abrasion resistance and impact strength, plus very little stretch—three things you really need with these brutes.” To fish with Capt. Kane on the six-passenger Fish Bound, contact: www. fishboundcharter.com; 443-497-1361. Open boat fans can check out the Morning Star (http://morningstarfishing.com; 410-520-2076).

Central Florida Bass Are On The Beds By Nick Carter • Photo by Brett Cannon

W

hile largemouth bass across much of the country remain hunkered down in a winter pattern, bass in central Florida are running full tilt in all three stages of the spawn. Right now tournament angler and guide Ricky Congero is wearing out big Florida strain largemouths on the eight Kissimmee Chain lakes around Orlando. Whether you’re an angler in need of a road trip or if you’re sitting in an easy chair waiting on your reservoir to get right, Congero’s tactics might help steer you to the largemouth of a lifetime. Starting in November and December, Kissimmee largemouths begin staging up in prespawn behaviors. The first big waves of fish hit the flats toward the end of January. They’ll move in and out with the passage of cold fronts, but from January into early March there will be fish in all stages of the spawn. The key to locating them among miles of thick vegetation is to find hard-bottomed shallow flats. “You can pattern them year-round based on the spawning flats,” Congero said. “During prespawn, they’ll be staged in the first grass maybe

100 yards off those flats. Postspawn, they’ll move out into the dense hydrilla and hyacinth.” Congero starts by covering water with moving baits like swim jigs and Chatterbaits in search of bass preparing to move up. When the smaller males arrive on the flats to fan out beds, it’s an indicator that fishing is about to get very good. “If you start catching a bunch of young bucks on the flats, the big females won’t be far behind,” he said. In the tannic waters of the Kissimmee lakes, it’s difficult to spot fish on the bed. Instead of sight fishing, Congero looks for the locations big females prefer. “You always find the bigger females bedded on isolated pads, as opposed to the big clumps of pads,” he said. “They’ll spawn right at the base of the stem.” And while heavy braid and heavy-duty tackle are mainstays for hossing big fish out of thick vegetation, fishing beds requires stealth and finesse. Sizing down to 17- or 20-pound fluorocarbon, Congero likes a short 5- or 6-inch Senko. A staple on the Kissimmee lakes is black with a blue tail. He Texas rigs it with 1-ounce tungsten bullet weight, which is pegged to the head of the worm. This allows him to feel when his bait hits the stalk, at which time he lets it sit on the bottom until the bass picks it up. “Don’t set the hook as soon as you feel her pick it up,” he warned. “She might just have the tail in her mouth and you’ll come back with half a worm. Wait until she’s swimming off with it. Reel up all the slack and give her a second or two before you set it.” For a guided trip, contact Congero at (973) 6998981 or email info@blackcloudfishing.com. First, the fleet of 30 fishing teams crushed all the records for the 39th annual tournament, and for the 65-year history of sailfish tournaments fished in eastern Florida waters. The final tally was 969 sailfish caught and released. The tournament’s second day of action wound up being the single best day in sailfish tournament history for any event fished north of Palm Beach County in waters of the Atlantic Ocean. A total of 712 sailfish were caught and released by the 27 boats on the water that day. The top three boats that day accounted for 121 sailfish by themselves — JT, led by Capt. Mark McDevitt, had 41 sailfish; Cowpoke, led by Capt. Mike Brady, had 40 sailfish; Alikai, led by Capt. Patrick Price, had 40 sailfish. The 41 by JT, owned by David Johnson of Beach Haven, N.J., stands as the new record for the tournament for a boat in a single day. Consider also that tournament rules stipulate fishing time as 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. But since the boat departed Fort Pierce Inlet each day, and the sailfish were concentrated in an area north of Patrick Air Force Base and south of Port Canaveral’s main channel some 45-50 miles north, tournament boats were forced to sacrifice up to 1:45 of fishing time each day just to reach the best fishing. But when they did, they were rewarded, at least for two days. The event began Jan. 9 when Grand Slam, led by Capt. David Grubbs

of New Smyrna Beach, sat down on an area so packed with hungry sailfish that it looked like a feeding frenzy under his boat. Grubbs felt it was going to yield some fish, and ran there because he knew it would produce bites. Few, if any, in the fleet knew his plan. By noon, the cat was out of the bag. Big time. He wound up with a Treasure Coast area then single-day record 38 sailfish catches that day and a substantial lead on his competitors, known to be some of the best sailfish skippers in the western hemisphere. Teams racked up catches of an incredible 86 double-headers, 45 triples and 15 quads. It was truly staggering. On Jan. 10 the fleet followed the leader, Grubbs and crew, to the fertile fishing grounds off the Space Coast and helped him achieve something many experienced sailfish specialists thought could only be accomplished in Mexico or Costa Rica. The captains called it epic and incredible, unbelievable and amazing. But it wouldn’t last. On Jan. 11 the fish had either scattered a bit, moved back north out of range, or simply quit biting, like fish of any species do. The fleet of 27 fishing that day picked up “just” 93 releases. Saturday, with a smaller fleet fishing because of lay days mandated by tournament rules, those numbers dwindled more. The final day anglers tallied only 29 releases, reminiscent of the season’s start in December when sailfish bites were very hard to come by.

Close Encounters of the Shark Kind By John Lidington

A diver observes a reef shark near Shark Canyon. In natural encounters, when sharks are not being fed, they rarely approach divers much closer than this.

“K

atharine the Giant Great White Shark Lurks Off Florida — Again” If Katharine was here, as the South Florida SunSentinal announced on Nov. 26, winter was on its way. Usually this snowbird shark from Cape Cod arrives first, and being a great white, she always makes the news. For divers, though, her arrival means the migrating lemon and blacktip sharks are on the way. It’s shark time for Florida’s Gold Coast! When I started diving in the 1960s, the arrival of sharks meant the departure of divers. Prevailing wisdom held that sharks were dangerous and unpredictable and should be avoided. That outlook on sharks began to change in the 70s. Scientists, such as the University of Miami’s Dr. Samuel Gruber, had turned shark behavior into a major study area. H. David Baldridge analyzed data from more than 1,500 cases in the worldwide shark attack file established by Dr. Perry Gilbert to identify the real factors behind shark “attacks.” The emerging picture showed an animal superbly adapted to its environment by its 400-million-year existence in the oceans. Man, as a newcomer to their world, was not seen as food, and usually ignored. In his 1974 book “Shark Attack,” Baldridge wrote: “I wish not to generate any

fear of sharks in the mind of any reader, yet a healthy respect for these beautifully adapted beasts would appear to be justified…” It took the PR genius of Jacques Cousteau to popularize this science and help dispel unnecessary fear of sharks. The air of authority gained from his highly regarded TV series lent credence to his book “The Shark: Splendid Savage of the Sea,” in which he documented divers regularly interacting with sharks. Sharks were becoming accepted in the diving world. But there was a bump in the road. At the same time “Shark Attack” appeared, Peter Benchley published Jaws. His depiction of sharks as malevolent killing machines was promptly translated to visual form in Steven Spielberg’s movie adaptation. The impressions from those twin horror assaults did eventually fade, but for quite a while it was the rare diver who didn’t experience flashbacks of huge toothy mouths while doing back entries. The twenty-first century has seen divers’ attitudes shift even more favorably toward sharks. Today many divers want to encounter sharks. They regularly visit sites naturally frequented by sharks in hopes of diving alongside these majestic fish. When diving Jupiter during the winter shark migration, your chances for shark encounters skyrocket! According to Shana Phelan of Singer Island’s Pura Vida Divers, “The most common sharks we see year round are nurse sharks, reef sharks and lemons. Our most active shark months are in the winter, with lemons in January and blacktips in January and February. Winter sightings are most likely at Shark Canyon and on some of the wrecks.” Shark Canyon, here I come! Pura Vida Divers hosts regular shark dives in February. To learn more about these awesome creatures, book a PADI Shark Conservation Specialty Diver class, or hop aboard their next charter. Florida Seeks Input on Spotted Seatrout FWC photo by Tim Donovan

T

he Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is gathering input on management of the recreational spotted seatrout fishery. Share your input by taking an online survey at SurveyMonkey.com/r/Seatrout2018. Your input will help FWC better understand the public’s satisfaction and desires related to this fishery. Spotted seatrout is managed in Florida in four unique zones across the state (Northwest, Southwest, Southeast and Northeast). The status of the seatrout populations within each zone is assessed using a measure of population health known as the spawning potential ratio (SPR). Research indicates seatrout populations should be kept to at least 20 percent SPR to maintain a sustainable population. The FWC manages spotted seatrout at a higher management goal of 35 percent SPR to provide a better fishery. In 2017, staff held a series of workshops related to a draft spotted seatrout assessment. The final assessment results were released in 2018 and suggest the Southwest and Southeast zones are exceeding the FWC’s management goal. The Northeast and Northwest zones are not meeting the 35 percent SPR management goal and may benefit from some management actions. The results of the survey will be brought to a Commission meeting in early 2019.

Intents Wins Light Tackle Sailfish Tourney By Ed Killer for CAM

F

Up (9) caught combined to win the season’s first two events. The Light Tackle fleet of 11 boats caught and released 22 sailfish on the final day to finish the event with 85 sailfish in three days of fishing. Lo Que Sea with Capt. Kevin Paul and anglers Tony Huerta and Garrett Yarbrough finished second with 11 releases. Showtime! with Doerzbacher and anglers Fred Hardwick, Nancy Hardwick, Tom Russell, Howard Webb and Jon Meade finished third with 10 releases. "Today was a great day for us," Bailey said Saturday. "We kept pace with the rest of the fleet and we just kept doing what we've been doing the last few days. Everybody had a really good time, and nobody was really nervous." The victory also signifies Bailey's first tournament win as a captain. Being able to achieve that during the Light Tackle Sailfish Tournament was meaningful for Bailey. "The first time I had anything to do with this tournament was as an observer while I was in high school, probably in 1989," Bailey said. "To know what this tournament means to Martin County and Stuart, and to be from here and win it, is pretty cool for me."

or some, entering the final day of a prestigious sailfish tournament with the lead can be a little intense. But not for the crew fishing aboard Intents. Capt. Rhett Bailey, owner and angler Alan Sadler of Palm Beach Gardens, anglers Jason Votzi, Van Wichers, Michelle Keeney and Sky Wichers, and crewmen James Ewing and Hector Torres, kept it fun and loose on the last day of the Light Tackle Sailfish Tournament. Although Intents shoved off from the dock with a six-sailfish lead over its nearest competitors — Lo Que Sea with Capt. Kevin Paul and Showtime! with Capt. Wink Doerzbacher — Bailey and company knew either of them, or another team, could get hot and catch enough sailfish by the end of the final day to overtake them in the standings. So, they went out, fished hard and had fun while doing so. Intents wound up catching four more sailfish on the final day and only trailed daily winner J & T led by Capt. Mark McDevitt, which caught five sailfish on the day. Intents wound up with 18 sailfish in three days, which is more than Quickie tournament winner Alikai (8) and Sailfish Classic winner Wrapped SEE SAILFISH.................................PAGE 3

news updates

SPECIES SPOTLIGHT: SNOOK The common snook, Centropomus undecimalis, is one of Florida's most popular inshore game fish because of its spectacular fighting ability and merit as table fare. Anglers call the common snook many names, but the two most common are robalo and linesider. The word "snook" comes from the Dutch word "snoek," meaning pike. The majority of anglers pronounce the name as "snook" (like took), but in parts of south Florida, it is pronounced "snuke" (like fluke). Five species of snook occur in Florida: 1. The common snook is the largest and most common and is the species caught by most anglers. In Florida waters, it may grow to 48 inches and 38 pounds. 2. The small-scale fat snook, C. parallelus, which seldom reaches 24 inches, has a squarish-shaped body covered with scales that are smaller

than those on the common snook. 3. The large-scale fat snook, C. mexicanus, was confirmed in 2006. With slightly larger scales and fewer gill rakers than the small-scale fat snook, this species has been found only on Florida's east coast between Sebastian and Jupiter. 4. The tarpon snook, C. pectinatus, is another small form with a squarish body, but it has larger scales than the fat snook does and has an upturned mouth, similar to a tarpon's mouth. 5. The swordspine snook C. ensiferus, is rare; it is the smallest species and has a disproportionately large anal spine. The four smaller species (2 through 5) are found in south-central and extreme southern Florida, usually upstream in coastal rivers or less saline habitats in upper estuaries. Common snook are normally

found in southern coastal Florida, from about Cape Canaveral on the Atlantic coast, around the peninsula, to about Tarpon Springs on the Gulf coast. The distribution then becomes disjunct, and they are found again from southwest Texas, south along Central and South America, to about Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The northern distribution is limited by the 50° F water isotherm, but during warm winters, some individuals may move north of this usual range. In the summer of 1989, after twelve years with mild winters, a 16-pound common snook was caught at the mouth of the Mississippi River. Because this species is associated with land masses that have freshwater rivers, it is principally a continental species, but it also occurs on larger islands that have rivers, such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Cayman Islands.

Life History

days. Microscopic observations of specimens from the Atlantic and Gulf coast indicate that the age of individuals at the time of reversal is between one and seven years. Biologists have documented this phenomenon by placing and holding "ripe and flowing" male snook in a pond during the summer and then during the fall, finding some females in the group. Spawning occurs in Florida from April or May through September or October, depending on annual variations in climate and temperature. Actual release of gametes occurs during the late afternoon and early evening hours on all tides and during all lunar phases. Individual females may spawn every two days and release about one and a quarter million eggs per episode. The mouths of coastal rivers and major inlets to the ocean and Gulf of Mexico have been identified as spawning locations. Some of these sites include Jupiter and Lake Worth inlets on the Atlantic coast and John's Pass and Clearwater Pass on the Gulf coast. It has been shown that snook also spawn inside Tampa Bay near the mouth of Terra Ceia and Miguel bays and around the Port Manatee spoil island. Schools of reproductively active snook may contain as many as four or five hundred individuals that return to the same location each year to spawn. Small immature snook are found in a variety of habitats that range from quiet, mangrove-lined swamps and bayous to freshwater rivers and creeks. Characteristics common to these areas include good water quality, moderate to slightly sloped banks, minimum currents, overhanging vegetation that provides

Common snook are moderately long-lived and fast-growing fishes. Females live about 21 years and can grow to lengths of 48 inches. Males live about 15 years and can reach 39 inches. Females attain legal minimum size in about four years, whereas males require five to six years to reach that size. Fifty percent of male snook reach maturity at about 18 inches total length and about two years of age, whereas 50 percent of females are mature at about 30 inches total length and five years of age. There are no physical differences between male and female snook, so anglers cannot tell the difference between the sexes. In fact, snook are protandric hermaphrodites: meaning the males reverse sex and change into females. This reversal occurs during the fall after the spawning season, sometimes in a short span of ninety SEE SNOOK................................. PAGE 27 2 TREASURE COAST

SAILFISH............................ FROM PAGE 1 Bailey's name will be added to the long list of Light Tackle-winning skippers as part of the Capt. A.A. Whiticar Top Captain Trophy. The trophy bears the names of some of the most famous captains in Florida — Chip Shafer, David Berard, Dennis Steele, V.J. Bell and Glenn Cameron. "Those are all guys I looked up to," Bailey explained. "Chip beat us a lot over the years and the rest of those guys, too. I've been on this boat for five years, and we've been in first quite a few times going into the final day and were never able to hold on to first place, so this is pretty special." Bailey grew up in Martin County and began fishing professionally in 1989. He worked as a mate alongside Capt. Dave Chasmar aboard Mississippi Gambler and spent a couple of years working with Capt. Mitch Pierson aboard NuCO2. "I've basically learned something from everyone who has ever taken me fishing, including my dad, Ray, who first got me fishing," he said. Bailey said a flurry of action Thursday made the difference. In six minutes, the team caught and released five sailfish. They took the tournament lead at that point, finished the day with 11 catches, and never looked back.

What do the ratings mean? POOR day basically means the fish will either steal all your bait or will not even touch your line. FAIR day means that you catch one or two fish but you will have to work hard to do so. GOOD day means that you will catch enough fish to feel gratified. BEST day means that you will catch something almost every time you cast your line in the water. SOURCE: The Old Farmers’ 2019Almanac

et me start off by saying WOW! Last month showed us a few days of such good sail fishing that the Treasure / Space Coast actually reclaimed Sailfish Capital of the World for the week. During the Pelican Yacht Club Billfish Tournament, boats that were able to get north against high seas and big waves racked up staggering numbers of sailfish shattering all previous tournament and recreational records that I know of. This body of fish was staged about 60 miles north of the St. Lucie Inlet. With a little luck, a couple hard north winds and a good cold front, they should make their way down to us this month. The St. Lucie Inlet is the northern end of

what has been deemed Sailfish Alley. From 90 out to 250 feet of water is where these fish typically migrate north and south. Live or dead bait is a great way to target sails and mahi this month. On rough and windy days, I prefer kite fishing with live bait. Your spread covers a lot of area and can act as a wall of bait as fish migrate downsea. On calm to moderate days I prefer to cover more ground and slow troll live baits using teasers to attract fish to the boat. My new Rupp Marine 22-foot long carbon fiber outriggers increased my “footprint” considerably and the extra length and rigidity make a huge difference in dead and live baiting. I can set my clips so much looser, fish a short rigger and a teaser off them and my hookup ratio has definitely gone up. I’m blown away by what a difference carbon fiber makes. This time of year, 15- to 20-pound test tackle is plenty. Use 40- to 60-pound leader, 4/0 to 8/0 circle hooks depending on bait size and tackle. I’ve been using Mustad tournament legal hooks pretty much since they came out and I’ve been extremely happy with them. EZ bait rigging sells a pre-dipped swivel that fits on whatever size you like and won’t jump off while you’re trolling,

you should definitely check them out. If you are trolling this time of year, take the time to rig a dredge or two. Natural and artificials both work well. Fish Down Sea makes great artificial shads, they’re bright, strong and put off a ton of vibrations. Try pulling them off a Cannon downrigger, it makes it extremely easy and keeps them out

of the way. A 6.5-foot Blackfin circle hook rod is what you’re looking for. Mine are 12- to 20-pound and a fast taper with 30 FinNor Marquesa reels. I used the same setup on the BoneShaker 10 years ago and we’ve all been so happy with them I haven’t looked back. Looking forward to seeing you on the water this February and I hope your next trip is Off The Chain.

he winter continues with some good light-tackle fishing in the river near the St. Lucie Inlet. The “back country” fishing can be best this time of year, targeting fish in the north and south forks of the St. Lucie River. Most of our local snook move back there during these cooler months. We’ve also been catching redfish and trout back there mostly using D.O.A. C.A.L. jigs. My favorite colors are bright green (aka chartreuse). When using these

eef and wreck fishing will be at the top of the offshore strategy list for bottom fishing, meat hunters during the days of February. The go to zone for catching most species of bottom fish will be between 50 to 120 feet of water. As seas remain choppy but “fishable” out of the north and east, offshore anglers will angle towards reefs close to shore and slightly north of the St. Lucie Inlet. Martin County’s exceptional, offshore artificial reef program has set in place over 60 reef structures within three to four nautical miles, just east and north of our inlet. Old barges, concrete bridge spans, inlet dredging spoils, and prefabricated “reef makers” make up the majority of these artificial reef structures and have become home to a large, diversified body of fish, both resident and pelagic, especially snapper. Lane, mangrove, vermilion, yellowtail, cubera, and mutton snapper are regularly caught by local anglers around these structures. Lane snappers are

jigs along the mangrove shorelines, simply cast close into the mangroves and use a medium/slow retrieve with slight jigging-twitch. The colder the water, the slower the retrieve. When snook fishing the bridges, we use “First Light Snook Jigs” along the bottom. After sunset, cast a 1.5-ounce or 2-ounce jig upcurrent (or an angle up-current) and retrieve down with the current making an occasional quick jigging jerk motion. The big snook will often be close the bridge abutments and channel fenders. Snook season opens on February 1 and this is a good method to catch slot-sized 28to-32 inchers. The pompano bite continues through February for surf-casting and inshore jigging the bridges and flats. Outgoing tide has been best inshore for the bridges, crossroads, and inlet flats. Wading the Sailfish Flats for pompano can be lots of fun near low tide, especially for flyfishing, with the possibility of other fish such as trout, redfish, bonefish,

jacks, and more. Bucktail jigs work great on the flats along with Gold Spoons and D.O.A. Curly Tail Jigs. We’ve lately come across lots of sand trout in the channel of the Intracoastal Waterway and caught them using live shrimp on a chicken rig. ard to believe that Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Don’t forget your sweetheart and enjoy the fishing this month. Winter is well established, and you can expect weekly cold fronts to blow through the area bringing windy days and cool temperatures with them. Water temps will fluctuate

this month and you must adapt to the changes for better success. The trout bite has picked up and we are seeing more sea grass growing on the flats. I like to use a D.O.A. Deadly Combo when looking for sea trout. Look for redfish around docks and mangroves. We have already had good success finding redfish this year and it should prove to be another banner year for them. Snook fishing will be best at night around the bridges and jetties. Live bait or a D.O.A. Bait Buster will be good choices. Sheepshead are plentiful this month. You can find them along with black drum and snapper hanging under docks or along channel edges. Live or dead shrimp always works well. It has been a good bite so far. Pompano can be found along beaches, in deeper areas of the grass flats and in channels. Doc’s Goofy

Jigs are great for pompano with live shrimp and sand fleas good choices, too. Mackerel, jacks, bluefish and ladyfish will all be coming in with the tides and small shiny lures will work best for them. We have enjoyed more normal winter weather and the fish bite has been good for us. Winds will still be blowing, and the water will begin to gradually rise in temperature. Fishing your lures slowly will certainly give you more action on the river. Fish tend to be sluggish in the colder water. Be willing to fish deeper water if the temps drop below 68-degrees. Working your lures or bait slower along the bottom will give the fish more time to react to it and will result in more bites for anglers. Have fun this month and get out fishing. Remember, fishing is not just another hobby, it's an ADVENTURE! Good fishing.

e are now celebrating fish filet February. We have decked the halls, rang in the new year and now we can fall in love with February fishing. As with all the winter months, we must be patient and wait for weather openings. The targets of the month are the faithful and various snapper species. We will also see some of our favorite pelagic species as they enjoy a bit of the brisk winter. All winter we have had abundant snapper catches, and this will continue right through the month.

The lane snapper is a colorful and tasty fish also known as candy snapper. The lane snapper state record is a mere 6-pounds 6-ounces, but their delicious flavor and the relative ease of catching them make up for the lack of girth. Then there is the mutton. With

some patience and practice, you can claim a trophy “snappersaurus”. The mutton snapper all tackle record is over 30-pounds and it is also the most skittish of the snapper species, which always makes for a great game of angler vs. fish. The muttons are one of our top three favorite fish

to target and to catch and make for some amazing table fare! When heading out, keep an eye out for cobia as they will be bobbing along with the darting mackerels on the water’s surface. Keep a closer eye out for the sharks as well as barracuda and kings. As if the winter weather wasn't enough of a challenge, there will also be a copious amounts of predators to tango with. Who's faster, the angler or the predator? We recommend celebrating February by catching a mountable mutton as your valentine. Enjoy the winter weather challenge to improve your angling and overall fish IQ. Tune in to the weather reports, plan five-to-seven days ahead, and prepare tackle and bait from bottom and top bite. Make smart decisions before making your next voyage and take advantage of the romantic atmosphere that February provides. Tight lines and good vibes!

ooking forward to February and the opening of snook season on the first of February. The action should be red hot around the Fort Pierce Inlet and the local bridges. I will be using two baits. First is a live bait like a pinfish, pigfish or a greenie, fished on the bottom using a 30-to 40-pound fluorocarbon leader and a 6/0 live bait hook and just enough weight to hold the bottom. napper will be on the catch list for February. Snapper of many varieties will be around reefs, wrecks and structures. These fish will be anywhere in the ocean from the 10 feet depth to the deeper waters of 125 feet and farther. There are multiple species of snapper and they will be on the hunt for food in Treasure Coast waters this month. Mutton snapper are one of the most sought after in the snapper family. favorite color. You will need to fish these jigs on the bottom and slow bounce them off the bottom at places like the jetty and or the wall at the turning basin. If you are fishing at the jetty a live shrimp, a ¼-ounce jig head will work too. Look for a good redfish bite at places like the docks along South Indian River Drive. The top bait to use should be a live shrimp and a ⅛-ounce or ¼-ounce jig head and a 20-pound fluorocarbon leader. The bottom fishing should also be good around the bridges and channel edges for sheepshead, black drum, bluefish and Spanish macks. Try a small weight like a ½-ounce to 1-ounce and about 24-inches of fluorocarbon and a #2 long shank hook. Live shrimp, fiddler crabs or frozen shrimp will work just fine. very skittish fish. It is recommended to use a long fluorocarbon leader no more than 30-pounds. Another snapper species to look for is the mangrove snapper. These fish are also found around structure manmade or natural. The difference from mutton snapper is that these fish are caught much closer to the structure. They often hide in cracks and crevices waiting for food. Mangroves are not as skittish as mutton snapper, so you can use a shorter 30-pound fluorocarbon leader between 5-and-10-feet to withstand their teeth and abrasions from the structure. The lane snapper bite will also be good this month. Lane snappers DJ hooked up this 20-inch don’t get as big as mutton snapper or mutton snapper bottom fishing mangrove snapper, but they can get in 80 feet while bottom fishing up to 4.5-pounds. You will snapper seem to stay in the sandy catch these while bottom fishing for areas around the structure and are mangrove and mutton snapper.

You can hook snapper on a smaller live sardine or dead baits such as a sardine plug, squid or a chunk of ballyhoo. Even a nice handpicked shrimp will be appetizing to these fish. As far as equipment for these fish, I use light 10-pound tackle if I am fishing the beach to 25- to 30-pound tackle if fishing depths to 100 foot. The possibility of catching a red snapper is there, but if you land one, please release the fish unharmed. Red snapper are out of season so they are not legal to keep. Prior to snapper fishing please familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations for the East Coast (the West Coast rules and regulations for snapper are different). Each variety of snapper has a different size limit so be sure to know the legal sizes for each fish you catch. Be sure to have a venting tool on your boat for any bottom fish that you may catch that is too small or needs to be thrown back. Have a great time on the water and good luck.

egardless of the weather, the Sebastian area will be a very fishy place in February. In the Indian River Lagoon, sea trout and redfish will be the stars of the show as they will be more available and predictable than at other times of the year. If warm weather prevails, Sebastian Inlet snook will be ready to bite when the season opens Feb. 1. Pompano, whiting and bluefish will continue to keep surf fishermen busy along the beaches. The Sebastian River will provide a thermal refuge to all fish species (and humans) on the coldest days or it can be a great spot to fish for snook and tarpon if the February PHOTO CREDIT: Capt. Being primarily a backcountry catches in the lagoon in February. areas of protected deep water such angler, I have embraced this time of Large seatrout will react to cold as canals and creeks. Live shrimp, year and have had many memorable winter weather by moving into D.O.A Shrimp, jigs and twitch-baits fished slowly near the bottom in these areas can account for some incredible gator trout action on days that find most anglers unwilling to leave the house. During the warm weather periods between the cold fronts, these same fish will be found in super shallow protected areas. Under these conditions, stealth becomes a must, and wading can further swing the odds in an angler’s favor. Live shrimp on a short leader below a small float is a great method to fool shallow water trout, especially if you have a strong wind or current to help drift the bait into the strike zone. Soft plastics and small shallow running plugs are excellent choices

for making the long casts necessary to cover the shallow, mud bottom flats without spooking the wary trout and reds. Redfish, regardless of temperature or water clarity, will be in the shallow backwaters. Mangrove shorelines can be sight fished when the waters are clear. Fly fishermen and light tackle anglers should take advantage of the good visibility calm, clear days offer to sight fish reds. Small live shrimp, D.O.A. shrimp, jerk-baits and small shallow running plugs are also very effective when sight casting. If shallow back waters are murky, you can drift or trolling motor very quietly throwing a weedless gold spoon, four-inch D.O.A. C.A.L. jerk-bait or tipped skimmer jig and cover as much area as possible. Blind casting these areas will give anglers a very good chance of scoring on reds, trout and even snook that will line up along sunny shorelines. Wade fishing around spoil islands, flats edges and sunny shorelines with live shrimp, flies and artificials can lead to some eye-opening results. Use the wind and current to make long casts and natural drifts while wading to get into gator trout and reds that will in most cases spook if approached by a boat. Occasionally, big snook show up on the spoil islands in the early spring and can be an added bonus while wade fishing for trout and reds. Pompano will still be a target of both surf and lagoon anglers in February. Sandfleas and cut clams are the preferred baits of surf fishermen who line up north and south of Sebastian Inlet. Pink Doc’s Goofy Jigs are the choice of serious pompano anglers in the lagoon. Hopping the jigs along the bottom behind the inlet and around spoil islands is the best way to target the tasty hard fighting pomps. Dress and fish as the weather dictates.

here is some great fishing to be enjoyed out of Sebastian in February. Bottom fishing will be solid this month from the shallow reefs along the beach on out to the Gulf Stream. It can be a good month to fish the 10, 20, 40 and 50 feet reefs off of Vero, especially when the wind has a westerly component. Chunky sheepshead, triggerfish, and mangroves can make for a good winter day of fishing when the deeper waters are too bumpy. When weather allows, the 90- to 160-feet reefs should be excellent. Grouper and red snapper are out of season but mangrove snapper, muttons, lanes, sea bass, triggerfish, and cobia will be on the menu. Resident cobia will be on the bottom early this month around structure. When you hook one, he’ll run hard and then head for the surface. Remember to back off that drag if it is set tight for grouper.

The cobes will charge hard around the boat and will need to be played out unlike other bottom fish. Later in February, the cobia will start to show themselves if the surface temp gets in the upper 60s. Watch for breaks in the surface temperature and subtle weed lines for free swimmers. Spend a little time cruising these areas when the sun is high, and the seas are glassy. Throw a swim bait or bucktail in front of them and watch them charge. If you are lucky enough to find the manta rays, the cobes will be under them. Watch for mantas breaching in the distance. You can also locate the mantas by seeing the “ink spot” in the water from a great distance on a sunny day. Keep an eye out for delicious tripletail this month. They’ll be hiding under any floating debris from 40- to 70-foot depths. Be ready with a light spinning rod and a 1/0 hook or a small bucktail. Add a weighted float for easy presentation. If you really want to be ready, keep a couple dozen live shrimp ready. They can’t resist. Get upwind and throw past the sighted fish and slowly wind in until you’re close. Pop the cork if necessary. Be patient and don’t get to close with the boat. They will spook easily and get lockjaw or drop out of sight. Kingfish fishing will continue

to be a solid bet this month. Keep a live bait or a frozen sardine freelined while bottom fishing. Target them by slow trolling and drifting over the reefs. Keep a couple baits near the surface and a couple baits at middepth. A simple and effective rig is a 2-foot length of 40#, 7-strand wire with a 5/0 circle hook. Use a figureeight knot to fasten the hook and swivel. Spanish sardines work great. Live greenies are deadly. Be ready to pick up some greenies outside the inlet on sabiki rigs. For

Gulf Stream fishing, try drifting those greenies around fishy looking areas. Sailfish should be a good bet. When trolling out there, work some subsurface baits into the spread. Downriggers and down planers will greatly increase your chance of hooking a wahoo. A small lure way back will pick up tasty blackfin tuna as well. Although not considered a top month for dolphin, there will be some good dolphin days for those who find some warmer water. Best of luck out there!

ebruary's fishing forecast means snook season is open. Look for mid-day temperatures to warm up the water and you will find snook in the shallows around docks and mangrove. You also want to a look for approaching cold fronts, which means bridge or jetty fishing. Do not forget when you are measuring a snook, to keep it, it must measure between 28-to-32-inches with a pinched tail. On the flats try using a D.O.A. Shrimp in the clear and gold color or a Bass Assassin Sea Shad in the Mud Bug color. Around the bridges or jetties, you want to try using a 1.5-ounce or 2-ounce snook jig. My preference is a First Light or T & A Snook Jig.

Pompano will still be around along beaches and bridges close to inlets. Try using salted clams and Fish Bites for good action along the beaches. Pompano and whiting will be your targeted species. INSHORE — February is a good

time to target a lot of different species. From pompano, jacks, sheepshead and sharks around deeper cuts to snook, reds , flounder and trout along the mangroves, bridges and docks. During this time the water is a lot colder than most of the year. When fishing the flats around mangroves, hit the water a little later in the day and target sand holes and areas with dark mud. These spots will warm quicker than

of sand with close deep water nearby. I find that February and March can be very good for BIG seatrout. When targeting these bigger fish, sometimes that means not a lot of bites, but the bites you will get will be quality, as long as you are throwing things like big suspending twitch baits, big top water lures, or even a teninch mullet. Next month's article I plan on having a good recipe for pompano and snook. Until then, this is That's R-Man Land Based Fishing signing off for now. Good luck on your next adventure!

surrounding areas and should be holding fish. Remember snook season opens February 1. Tripletail is another great target this time of year. Launch near structure like crab pots and channel markers; they are great places to find these fish.

Offshore — Come February, cobia is on the mind. These fish will start to move into the beaches following around the rays, sharks and turtles. I like to have a D.O.A. Swimming Mullet ready to pitch to them when spotted. Sailfish, kingfish, wahoo and dolphin will also still be frequent catches in February. Look for these guys to be found from 90-to-120 feet chasing goggle eyes, pilchards and blue runners. Finally, don’t forget about the nearshore bite. Spanish mackerel and bluefish should give a lot of action off most beaches around Palm Beach County. A

few tips to avoid the most common fly fishing mistakes I see in my charters, especially with first timers.

Presentation/casting

Fly fishing for trout in a river, you literally can wait all day before your first cast and more than likely the fish will be in the same spot hours later (I’m not talking about migrating fish like steelhead, etc.). Rainbow, brown and brook trout usually will stay in their area and you really can pick your best shot. Saltwater fishing is the complete opposite! Most shots at a fish are here and now, not in ten-seconds. Be ready at all times and when you cast, limit your false casting, be fast and precise to get your fly in front of the fish, and make sure that your line and leader are straightened out.

why a lot of good fish are getting away. Keep in mind that most of our target species in saltwater are hard-mouthed and the only way to properly hook a fish is through a straight line. Lifting the rod is not generating enough power for hook setting or pulls the fly right out of the mouth or if the fish misses it, pulls the fly away. There are a few tricks to limit this: 1. Keep your rod tip in the water as a reminder not to lift the rod when you set the hook. 2. Put the rod underneath your arm and strip Catching big fish in the salt – strip set! with both hands. For setting the hook, in both cases, just keep Don’t trout set (lifting the rod for hook setting)! This is one big mistake and the reason stripping until you’ll feel the weight of the fish in

your hand while stripping. Keep in mind that a good strip set is not only a line strip, it is a long or many long line strips. Often these fish swim straight toward you, you want to keep up with them while stripping as fast as you can. A properly hooked fish will increase your chance of landing this fish. ebruary can be a bit chilly topside, but many are surprised to learn water temps remain relatively warm throughout the winter in Florida, especially offshore. Divers who venture out local inlets may be in for a treat if sea conditions lay down long enough between cold fronts since visibility can be quite clear this time of year too. Visibility on the Treasure Coast is quite predictable this time of year provided an eye is kept to the wind. Strong northerly winds from passing fronts during the winter months are often preceded by offshore, westerly winds for 12-to-24 hours before the front sweeps through. With a little timing, divers can take advantage of this short spell of calm seas near the

beach and can sneak in some great dives just outside local inlets. Since our area has been very dry for the past few months there have been no discharges from Lake Okeechobee and minimal run off from local canals. This results in clear water and great visibility at areas close to shore and further out too. Local beach cameras at Jensen Beach and Bathtub Reef are

great tools for watching real-time conditions for calm seas and good visibility. Temperatures can be surprisingly warm below the surface too, due to the proximity of our area to the warm influence of the Gulf Stream. Temps in the low 70s are common and can be warmer than air temps in some cases. A few tricks for staying warm after a dive: (1) Fill

one-gallon water jugs with HOT water from the tap before leaving the house and put them in an uniced cooler. They will stay warm inside for four-plus hours and make for a great warm-water rinse after a dive; (2) Dry clothes and a beanie are a big help too. Even a kneelength ‘boat coat’ or parka over top of wet suits to protect from the wind and will ensure comfortable ride back to the dock after a dive in cool weather. Since lobster season remains open through March, divers have plenty of time to bag a delicious meal while exploring area reefs. Cobia and amberjack are also prime targets since grouper and hogfish are currently closed until May 1. These large gamefish make excellent smoked fish dip and can fill a cooler quickly too. Divers will notice AJs around high-profile structure while cobia tend to follow sharks, rays and big turtles and both can put up quite a fight making them one of the most exciting fish to spear. Hunters should practice the buddy system for safety and consider floating speared fish to the surface on a lift bag or sausage in order to avoid losing a catch or provoking an encounter with the “tax collectors” in grey suits.

Blessing of the Fleet and Marine Parade

Saturday, February 9 T

he 48th annual St. Lucie River Blessing of the Fleet will occur Saturday, February 9, 2019. This traditional and historical maritime event had its beginning with early fisherman asking their clergy to bless their ships, crew and catch. The event, which began on the Treasure Coast in 1941, mirrors similar events held worldwide. Besides local commercial fishermen, the vessels blessed now also include local yacht clubs, marinas, yacht brokers, sailing clubs, U.S. Power Squadron, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and independent owners – sail and power. All are welcome! In early years, the Blessing of the Fleet, was fortunate to have the endorsement of the Evinrude family with Mr. and Mrs. (Frances Langford) Evinrude volunteering their personal yacht, Chanticleer, for the event. The Evinrude’s contributed a large trophy currently held by the host yacht club in their memory. T h i s year’s parade will be held

Alikai Wins Fish Heads Invitational for Second Season Win By Ed Killer for CAM

O

ver the past two sailfish tournament seasons on Florida’s Treasure Coast, it is hard to find a team hotter than the guys fishing aboard the Alikai. In mid-December, the boat won the Fish Heads of Stuart Invitational Sailfish Tournament, its second consecutive sailfish tournament of the season and its third tournament in four tries in two years.

Capt. Patrick Price of Jensen Beach, normally the skipper of his DayMaker charters based in Stuart, co-owner Geoff Mayfield of Stuart (who owns the boat along with Joe Schoppe of Stuart, although Schoppe did not fish this event), anglers Kevin Hawken and John Clark Bills, Pirates Cove Sailfish Classic winning team members from Wrapped Up, owner Chris Lazarra and Capt. Andrew Ford, and Alikai mates Marshall Busha and Dave Dalfo.

Alikai won the Invitational in rare fashion – by not actually catching a sailfish on the final day of the three-day tournament. Teams only fished two of the three days, however, as rough weather caused tournament officials and anglers to opt to lay in port one of the days. Price said when he began the final day with a 7-6 lead on Champagne Lady and Capt. Josh Chaney, he knew the best defense would be a good offense. Except there really was no offense. "I didn't think it would be so hard to catch a sailfish," Price said. "We didn't see one all day." The fleet of 10 boats fishing the final day of the Fish Heads of Stuart Sailfish Invitational did not find the mother lode of sailfish. In fact, they were lucky to find any sailfish at all. The fleet of 10 teams caught six sailfish for the day and just 31 in two days of fishing. While Alikai did not catch a sailfish all day, it was not for a lack of trying. "We covered 147 miles out there," Price explained. "We fished as far north as Fort Pierce, as far south as Jupiter, as far offshore as 400 feet of water, and as far inshore as 65 feet of water." Price said despite the tension,

the crew stayed loose all day with plenty of laughing mixed in with hard work. "We have such a good team with good vibes," Price said. "We couldn't do what we do without Marshall and Dave. And all day long, Geoff and the anglers kept prospecting, and working as hard as they could." Thursday, Alikai capitalized on its opportunities catching seven of eight bites. A midday triple-header, however, was anything but routine. At one point during the complicated battle, Price realized they risked losing one or more sailfish of the triple. So they decided to "pass off " the rod to, well, Aquaman? "We tied a life jacket onto the rod and tossed it overboard," Price said Thursday. "I then had two guys keep their eyes on that life jacket while we reeled in and released the other two sailfish." They were able to recover the life jacket just in time. When Busha retrieved it, he said there were only about 10 wraps of line left on the reel. They reeled the fish tight and were able to record the release. If that fish did not count in the standings, Alikai would have finished in second place to Champagne Lady.

St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program Update: February 2019 P

rogress continues on the deployment of the Indian Hills Stormwater Treatment Area (STA) Oyster Reef. The deployment area has been staked and personnel from Dredging and Marine Consultants, engineers and scientists have met on site to address adjacent property owners’ concerns about potential pooling and stagnation of water and shifting of sediments. Although some shifting of sediments will occur, the oyster reef should help reduce sand movement and may even help eliminate the existing deep pocket waterward of the STA outfall. Planting of shorelines with native saltmarsh vegetation will help stabilize shorelines even further. Staging of the Indian Hills Oyster Reef began on January 14, 2019. This will be the first in a series of oyster reefs along a 13 mile stretch of South Indian River

Drive, extending from downtown Fort Pierce to Jensen Beach. Oyster biologists from Sandbar Oyster Company in North Carolina and Oyster Boss on Apalachicola Bay visited the Indian Hills Oyster Reef Site. Dr. Neils Lindquist of Sandbar has developed several biodegradable modules that have been effective at settling oysters in the Carolinas and has left some of the modules for

testing in the Indian River Lagoon. After the deployment of the Indian Hills Oyster Reef, the next two locations for Indian River Drive oyster reefs are likely to be at Old Fort Park and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Academy in Fort Pierce. All three sites will have oyster reef components,

although habitat enhancements will diverge from there. Fish habitat at the Indian Hills site will be enhanced by deploying Ecosystems juvenile fish habitat modules between the oyster reefs. The oyster reef at Old Fort Park will be enhanced by addition of a stormwater baffle box to remove pollutants before the stormwater empties into the Indian River Lagoon. At St. Andrew’s Academy, students will study living shoreline methodologies and study techniques to re-establish seagrasses. Living shorelines have the ability to stabilize shorelines while increasing fish and wildlife habitat value. Because this type of infrastructure gets stronger

over the years, living shorelines may replace seawalls in certain locations. On January 15, St. Lucie County hosted presentations by the Sandbar Oyster Company and Oyster Boss. Both successes and challenges to restoring oysters were discussed including effects of salinity, diseases, and sedimentation. Low oyster recruitment in certain areas may prevent sustainable oyster populations. To overcome this potential bottleneck, sandbar modules will be deployed in Wildcat Cove, a site where brood stock are known to occur, in order to attract oyster recruitment on the modules. After recruitment occurs, the modules will be transferred to help reseed other areas in the lagoon.

Voici Bernadette Update Fundraising continues for the deployment of the 180-foot freighter, Voici Bernadette, for artificial reefing on St. Lucie County’s deepwater artificial reef site. Already cleaned and prepared for reefing, this ship is docked at the Summerlin Dock in Fort Pierce while fundraising

efforts continue. So far, more than $69,000 has been donated for the transportation, cleaning and deployment of the Voici Bernadette, with major donations by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency and the Coastal Conservation Association. Use of the ship as an educational tool has already begun. Faculty and students from Indian River State College’s Science Club have toured the vessel to learn how the new reef will create additional recreational opportunities and help propagate fish stocks on the Treasure Coast. MMPS fundraising efforts continue with sales of memorial plaques. MMPS has $3,300 in cash on hand towards the reefing of the Bernadette with future events being planned. For more information on the St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program or the deployment of the Voici Bernadette, or to learn more about volunteer opportunities to help create oyster reefs in St. Lucie County, contact Jim Oppenborn, St. Lucie County Coastal Resources Coordinator, at oppenbornj@ stlucieco.org or (772)462-1713.

Fort Pierce Sportfishing Club Membership Meeting Feb. 20 Paul Michele, National Sales Manager Navionics, Inc., Guest Speaker The Fort Pierce Sportfishing Club will hold its next membership meeting Wednesday, Feb. 20, 7 p.m., at the Fort Pierce Yacht Club, 700 N. Indian River Drive, Fort Pierce. The guest speaker for the evening is Paul J. Michele, National Sales Manager for Navionics, Inc. In his position with Navionics, which develops and manufactures electronic navigation charts and systems for marine, inland lakes and rivers, and for outdoor use, Paul is responsible for the company’s national accounts and sales team management throughout the Americas. Paul’s presentation will focus on how to use bottom mapping techniques to locate more fish.

The Fort Pierce Sportfishing Club was established in 1980 by a local group of avid anglers. The club is a family-oriented organization, whose members share an interest in sportfishing, conservation, community service, and boating. The club is for the experienced angler, the new to the area angler and the never fished angler who is curious about sportfishing. Membership, currently at 80 members, supports conservations efforts and provides a place for local anglers to gather, swap stories, and learn from each other and from its knowledgeable guest speakers, each an expert in their field.

Paul Michele will share how bottom mapping techniques can help you catch more fish. PHOTO COURTESY of Paul Michele.

Monthly meetings are held the third Wednesday of every month, 7 p.m., at the Fort Pierce Yacht Club. Guests are invited to attend monthly meetings at no charge. Full membership is available and includes many additional benefits, such as participating company

discounts, group activities and community service activities while sharing the love of sportfishing with like-minded members. For more information, visit www.ftpiercesportfishingclub.com or email fpsc@live.com.

Fantini/Hampson Win First BCFA Tournament of 2019 M

embers of the Backcountry Fishing Association (BCFA) kicked off their 2019 season with the first tournament of the year on Jan. 5, fishing out of Little Jim Fish Camp in Fort Pierce. Thirty-eight (38) boats grinded it out on a beautiful morning, which ended a little windy due to a cold front pushing through. Twenty-six (26) trout and ten (10) redfish were brought to the scale. Returning members Andy Fantini and Chelsea Hampson took first-place with a 5.13-pound redfish and a 4.39-pound trout. With a combined weight of 9.52-pounds the duo took home $712. Chelsea also was awarded Lady Angler of the month for the 5.13-pound redfish she caught, which earned her a $25 gift card to Taco Dive in downtown Fort Pierce. Former BCFA President Zach Foltz took second-place with a 4.78-pound trout and a 4.33-pound redfish. With a combined weight of 9.11-pounds, Zach walked away with $428. Third-place was awarded to

Backcountry Fishing Association Fort Pierce, FL

new member Colin Willis and returning member Darren Frost. Bringing to the scale a 3.15-pound trout and 4.30-pound redfish, a total weight of 7.45-pounds earned this team a check for $285. This duo also won the trout calcutta, pocketing an additional $260. Returning members Brandon Miller and Mark Williams took fourth-place with a 2.92-pound trout and a 4.48-pound redfish, total weight 7.40-pounds. Returning members Matt and Joe Canestrari took home $210 for the redfish calcutta with a 4.51-pound redfish. This team also placed fifth

with a total weight of 7.35-pounds. The Backcountry Fishing Association is a nine-month circuit, which runs from January through September, finishing with its twoday Classic in October. Teams must fish in at least five tournaments to be eligible to fish the Classic. The artificial lure only tournament gives two-person teams and solo anglers monthly opportunities to win cash and earn points. Redfish, trout and snook (seasonal) are the qualified species.

Anglers attempt to bring one legal fish of each species to the scales for weigh in and live release. Membership fees are $25 for the year. To enter the tournament each month, the fee is $60 per team. The second tournament of the series will take place on Saturday, Feb. 2 with the captain's meeting on Friday, Feb. 1. For more information, visit the Backcountry Fishing Association on Facebook.

SNOOK....................... FROM PAGE 2

the shade that facilitates capture of prey, and some type of structure, either mangroves, rocks, or pilings, that provides cover. These young-ofthe-year snook remain in this habitat until they are about ten to fourteen inches long, at which time they begin to sexually mature and migrate toward the higher-salinity areas of the lower estuary. After they become members of the spawning stocks, they utilize most areas of the estuary over the course of a year.

Fishing for Snook

Angling for snook is always challenging and many times frustrating. They readily take both artificial and live bait. Generally, it is best to fish with artificial lures in the winter and to fish with live bait in the spring and summer. Fish for snook when there is current, preferably in the outgoing tide. Likely locations are in cuts between islands, points adjacent to sandbars, and in channels through the flats. On the coldest, windy days, find a bar or sandy bank on the northeast shore of canals or bayous in the upper portions of the bays and work the area well with a Mirror 7-M, Yozuri Crystal Minnow, or plastic grub. Be careful not to disturb the area on approach, but if you do, move off and return about 30 minutes later. Snook don't move far in the winter and will return later to the same spot. The deeper holes at the mouths and in channels of coastal rivers always contain some lunker snook, and they may be enticed with a live sardine fished at the beginning of an outgoing tide. If there is a choice, fish for snook on days when there are four tides; on two-tide days, the currents are slow, and the bite is weak or non-existent. In the summer, if you prefer to fish at night, find a dock light that is close to the water and soak a shrimp just at the edge of the lightnot in the light, but at the edge of the light. If shrimp are not available, use a goldeneye or chartreuse bomber.

Proper Release Procedure

Snook Recreational Regulations Size Limits: • Not less than 28-inches or more than 32-inches* Atlantic excluding Monroe • Not less than 28-inches or more than 33-inches* Gulf and Monroe County Closed Season: • Atlantic (excluding Monroe) closed Dec. 15-Jan. 31 and June 1-Aug.31 • Gulf including Monroe County, Dec. 1-end of February, and May 1-Aug. 31 Daily Recreational Bag Limit: • 1 per harvester Remarks: • Snook permit required for harvest when saltwater license required. See MyFWC.com for snook permit details. Snatch hooks and spearing prohibited. • Zero daily bag and possession limit for captain and crew on for-hire vessels. • Catch and release only in SW region, see myFWC.com for more information. *Measured as total length. Total length is the straight-line distance from the most forward part of the head with the mouth closed to the farthest tip of the tail with the tail compressed or squeezed together while the fish is lying on its side.

For lunker snook, fish the bridges at night during the first two to three hours of the outgoing tide. Anchor up-current from the bridge or pilings, and cast a live ladyfish, pinfish, or grunt to the base of the structure. You could also try using a chartreuse or red and white Long-A Bomber. Then hang on! To catch the large snookthe large spawning adults-your chances are best around the bridges over the Intracoastal Waterway and inside inlets or the Skyway. Smaller snook are found "inside"-on the flats and around near shore structure. Of course, this rule doesn't always hold; some big fish are found in each kind of habitat in each month of the year. Fishing with fly rods at the beaches near inlets during the peak spawning months can be rewarding also. Walk the beach in the late afternoon on a

calm day with the sun at your front and watch for shadows ahead of you in the surf zone. These are probably snook and they will take flies that resemble shrimp or anchovies. Don't cast over or directly at the fish, but cast near it, in front of it. All snook are conservative ambush predators and won't pursue their prey great distances. When snook fishing, regardless of the terminal tackle, don't hit the fish with your bait, but don't throw it out of reach either. When everything else fails, collect ample sardines and lightly crush a few in your hand and toss them to a likely spot. Then place a nice lively fresh one in the midst. If you can't find sardines or thread herring, tilapia, mojarras, killifishes, or small grunts will work fine. Sometimes small blue crabs will also bring a lazy snook to the strike.

Release any undersized or out-ofseason snook. Research shows that only two percent of released snook die as a result of being caught and released. Releasing your snook with a minimum of handling practically ensures that the fish will be taken again. Fish with crimped barbs for reduced injury. Set the hook immediately so that the hook doesn't pierce an internal organ. Leave the fish in the water while taking the hook out with pliers or a special tool. If you must handle the fish, wet your hands or wear wet cotton gloves. If the fish is exhausted and has lost equilibrium, properly orient the fish and hold it lightly into the current, preferably in the shade. After the fish has gained equilibrium, release him immediately. Do not forcibly move the fish in a jerky back and forth motion. Gently support the fish into the current and release it as soon as possible. Nature can revive the fish much faster than any angler can!

Fishing Ethic

Always practice a conservative fishing ethic. During the closed seasons do not keep any snook that you catch. These closures are meant to protect snook during their most vulnerable times: during cold periods and during the height of the spawning season. Throughout the open seasons take no more than you need. Always follow the bag and length limits published in the current, official saltwater fishing regulations. Releasing large fish helps to build a "trophy" fishery, which means that your chances of catching a large snook are greater if anglers release the larger lunkers. If we all take only what we need, then one day Florida waters may produce a record snook larger than the current world record of 53 lb. 10 oz.

he Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council would like to gain a better understanding of yellowtail snapper in the Southeast region of the United States. It is seeking information from anglers and divers about trends or “strange things” that scientists and managers may need to know. A scientific stock assessment of yellowtail is scheduled to begin in February of 2019, and the council would like to know if you have noticed anything “fishy” about yellowtail, or yellowtail fishing, in recent years. The information provided will help inform scientists and managers as they formulate a current understanding of the yellowtail stock. Please visit our “Something’s Fishy About Yellowtail Snapper” questionnaire at http://gulfcouncil.org before Feb. 8 to report anything you’ve noticed about yellowtail in the Gulf of Mexico. FISH & FISHING

r spread C

onsider this an important decision. Other than deciding whether or not to use one, a surprising number of anglers seldom give leaders much thought. As long as there is some type of buffer against the deadly dentures of some species or the abrasive hide of others, fishermen tend to be satisfied. Their attention shifts to other aspects of the sport. Choosing the right material and proper construction for an effective leader are some of the most overlooked challenges in rigging. The ultimate, of course, centers on fishing a light line without a leader. That seldom is possible on the saltwater scene. Experience will prove to you that the fish you hook has teeth, abrasive skin, or the bottom is rugged. Any of these factors will end the battle almost before it starts. The general rule is that the heavier the leader material, the fewer strikes you will get. The solution demands a compromise. You want the strongest leader possible without sacrificing too many strikes. Monofilament leader invariably produces more strikes than single strand wire or nylon coated wire. Sometimes you have to use wire or every fish of a given species will cut you off. When you do use wire, rely on the shortest length that will produce favorable results. For offshore trolling, a short length of wire makes it easier to rig a bait. Some anglers even insist that a skipping offering being trolled works better if there is a short length of wire in front of it. The length of the leader is equally significant. From

MARK SOSIN a protective standpoint, if the species you seek has an abrasive body, the leader should be longer than the average fish you might catch. Then, when the fish is moving away from you and the line streams over its back, you have the protective advantage of a leader. This part of the leader does not have to be as heavy as the short length around its mouth and gills, but it should be stronger than the line. Fly fishermen become aware of a leader’s importance very quickly. In that type of fishing, the leader helps to turn over the fly properly so it lands on the water delicately. In very clear and shallow water, a longer leader enables the caster to enjoy a more delicate presentation where the fly line lands farther from the fish. This is particularly important on the saltwater flats for a variety of species including bonefish, permit, tarpon and redfish. Fly leaders take many basic forms, but the most important thing to remember is that each succeeding section should be shorter than the one before. The majority of tournaments and all recordkeeping organizations establish specific leader requirements. It makes sense to study them before you decide to compete or fish for a record. Leaders are a critical part of rigging each outfit you use. Cutting corners or ignoring details can be a serious mistake. If you lose a trophy fish because of a faulty leader, you’ll have a hard time forgiving yourself.

Queen Conch In The Bahamas Sheri Daye

W

hile hunting for that perfect fish for dinner, you sometimes run across other tasty treats. One of my favorites is from the Bahamas: the famous queen conch. This creature is as delicious as it is beautiful and deserves to be treated with great respect. Their slow growth and late maturation makes them susceptible to overfishing. Once abundant in the Florida Keys, it became illegal to harvest them in the 1980s when they were harvested to the point of collapse. It’s taken quite a few years to see the beginning of a comeback, but they will likely need continued protection for years to come in the U.S. In the Bahamas, the importance of this valuable resource has been realized and rules are in place to protect it. The recreational limit is six, and they must have a thick, well-formed lip—meaning they had a chance to grow into adulthood and reproduce. Also, they must be harvested while freediving. Inside the conch shell is a soft-bodied mollusk, which is in the same family as clams, oysters, octopi and squid. They live near coral reefs and seagrass beds and can reach up to 14 inches long. Besides humans, they have a few predators in the water—loggerhead turtles, nurse sharks, spiny lobsters and more. The meat has been consumed for centuries by islanders in the Caribbean and serves in a multitude of dishes such as salads, chowders and fritters.

Conch Tips:

1) Regulations are subject to change so double check before harvesting any marine life. 2) When diving, it is easy to see that in certain places in the Bahamas, especially close to highly populated areas, the conch are 16

I

not as abundant. Do not take any from these areas, even if it’s legal. 3) They are easy to spot and move slowly, so use good judgement. Target mature adults that have reproduced and are toward the end of their lifecycle. Consider taking less than the legal limit. 4) The mollusk is not easy to extract or to clean, so if you don’t know how, make sure you have a professional on hand at the end of the day to help you or teach you. 5) Don’t forget to check for pearls in the mantle. These pink pearls are beautiful and more rare than traditional pearls. 6) The inedible part of the conch (the guts, also called “slop”) makes excellent bait for fishing, especially for mutton snappers. Nothing goes to waste! 7) You might (or might not) want to eat the pistol, also known as “Bahamian Viagra.” It is part of the conch’s digestive system and looks like a clear noodle. 8) The Bahamas exports conch to the U.S., but bringing your own conch meat back to the U.S. by boat is strictly prohibited. As fisherman, we all know how hard live bait can be to find. Seasonal weather patterns change the way fish are biting, so a variety of bait is key. Bait fishing is so important that fishermen spend weeks prior to tournaments catching bait and then keep them penned up all for a couple epic days of fishing. The last thing you want is for your bait to die because of a pump failure. At Hooker Electric, we have designed a durable, strong and long-lasting baitwell system. This system is capable of supplying multiple livewells with its adequate DC brushless motor. You will no longer need multiple pumps to supply each livewell. Now, by adding the Hooker Electric custom manifolds, you can divert water to the designated wells by adjusting the amount of water flow to each well with our variable flow knobs. This allows you to run all of the wells from one Hooker Electric pump and have another one for redundancy. The system is easy to use with the variable flow dial, without having to restrict the pump. This Hooker Electric livewell system is a plumb-andplay setup with a variety of sizes. It’s available in 2500, 4500 and 7500 GPH and we also offer an on/off feature for the pumps. he older I get, the more I like to fish inshore for all the usual suspects from the Northeast, down through the Carolinas all the way to the Keys. From stripers and specks, to drum and snook, every fish loves a shrimp or minnow imitation under a float. And this includes many freshwater predators. I always keep a float rig tied on when fishing inside. Popping, cigar and oval floats all have their place, and an added “clicking” sound adds value, especially when fishing a soft plastic shrimp under the float. There are plenty of commercially available floats, but I want to share a simple and effective way to achieve the same end result… and one that will rarely foul or tangle. Whether the beads are external or internal, the clicking sound is perfectly married with the splashing sound that drives fish bananas. To make the simple external-bead-style clicking float, view the video below. Allow 1/16- to 1/8-inch clearance (total, not both ends) between the beads and ends of the pegs to allow the beads to tap the plastic pegs. Follow the instructions below to make the internal-bead-style clicking float. Materials: 80-pound fluorocarbon; small plastic beads, like those found in sliding cork kits; small swivels; a commercially available foam slip cork with plastic pegs. Steps: • Thread braided mainline through the plastic peg and one of the small beads. • Feed the mainline through to the other side of the slip cork and then tie it to one side of the swivel. • For the other side, thread a fluorocarbon leader through the other peg, thread on a small bead and tie it to the other end of the swivel.

• Press one peg securely into the slip cork, and then pull the bead and swivel into the float’s interior channel. • Press the second peg into the cork, and your slip cork is now a clicking float. The tiny beads slide back and forth on the line to tap the plastic pegs inside the float. • Tie a 3/8-ounce jig head and a soft plastic shrimp onto the leader, and… just add water. There are a number of opinions on how deep to fish below the cork. I like between 18 and 24 inches of fluorocarbon, depending on water depth. This same tackle works extremely well in freshwater for striped and hybrid bass in moving water. Just use a fluke-style soft plastic instead of a shrimp. The largest largemouth bass I caught this year was under cigar float with an internal clicker. I was fishing a Super Fluke for striped bass. Smallmouth bass in rocky rivers are complete idiots over this same rig. Wherever you are, and whatever you’re fishing for, a float rig is something you should keep tied and ready on the deck. Visit Barefootcatsandtackle.com. For video instructions on making a clicking cork, see:

nglers are catching a lot of big largemouths in Texas. Last year’s Toyota ShareLunker Program, which tracks bass heavier than 8 pounds, certified 486 bass caught from 89 Texas lakes in 2018, and that’s just the fish that were reported. At the beginning of 2018, the Toyota ShareLunker program debuted a new year-long season for anglers to enter bass for prizes, recognition, and to help enhance bass fishing in Texas. Anglers entered largemouths into four categories including six “Legacy Class” bass of 13 pounds or heavier that were entered during the spawning window Jan.1 through March 31 and loaned to TPWD for the selective breeding and stocking program. The total number of entries in other categories who provided citizen science data included: five “Lunker Legend” bass 13 pounds or heavier caught outside the spawning window or not loaned for spawning, 107 “Lunker Elite” bass weighing 10 to 12.99 pounds, and 368 “Lunker” bass at least 24 inches or weighing between 8 and 9.99 pounds. The top five ShareLunker producing lakes in 2018 included Lake Fork near Quitman with 73 entries, Lake Conroe near Houston with 41 entries, Lake Athens in Athens with 28 entries, Sam Rayburn Reservoir near Jasper with 21 entries, and O.H. Ivie Lake near San Angelo with 17 entries. For updates on the Toyota ShareLunker program visit https:// www.facebook.com/ShareLunkerprogram and https://texassharelunker.com/.

FRESHWATER Nevada’s WORLD-CLASS CUTTHROAT

T

he International Game Fish Association (IGFA) keeps the most extensive list of fishing records in the world. With categories for all types of tackle and species, some records are more impactful than others. This potential all-tackle length world record for cutthroat trout is without a doubt an impressive fish. Adam Garcia caught and released this giant cutthroat on Nov. 11, 2018 while fishing Nevada’s Pyramid Lake. The fish measured 85 centimeters in length, or more than 33 inches. Once the paperwork clears, the fish could dethrone the old 81-centimeter length record. Garcia is no newcomer to the record books. According to IGFA records, he holds four line-class world records for weight, all cutthroats caught from Pyramid Lake in 2016 and 2017. Some of those were actually longer than his Nov. 11 fish. The biggest one, which holds the 16-lb. line class record, weighed 24 pounds. Pyramid Lake is a large and natural desert lake near the California border northeast of Reno. It is the world hotspot for giant cutthroat trout, where anglers can wade from shore and cast jigs for record-class fish. Every single one of IGFA’s line class cutthroat records were caught from Pyramid, as well as the all tackle world record, which was caught back in 1925 by John Skimmerhorn.

Surprising Winter is the Best Planting Time

I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly

at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste

better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature. Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant. TIPS FROM A PRO

Cold-Water Bassin' BRANDON LESTER

F

ebruary is one of those transition months. Spring is just around the corner, and it might have already arrived in some places, but it’s still wintertime for most of the country’s bass fisheries. Bass are cold-blooded animals, which means the colder the water is, the more the fish’s core body temperature decreases. That also means the fish’s metabolism slows down. Metabolism is the chemical processes that occur which allow the fish to maintain life, grow, heal and make energy. Humans are warm blooded, so our body temperature stays a steady 98.6 degrees. A fish’s temperature drops with the water temp, which makes them more sluggish the colder it gets. If you’re like me, you’re ready to eat three meals a day and some snacks 365 days a year. It’s different with fish. In warm water, fish feed every day, throughout the day and into the night. In the winter they don’t feed nearly as often. One reason is they don’t move around as much, so they don’t come into contact with prey. Fish feed-up heavily in the fall when the water is still warm to put on weight. Bait is plentiful then, and instinctually they feel cold weather coming. I have way more 20- and 30-fish days in spring than winter. You’re not likely set any records for fish catches in cold water. Fish bite for two basic reasons, either because they’re hungry and the bait looks like food or because the bait has come into their territory

and they instinctively attack it. Reaction strikes are greatly reduced during the winter. In water mid-50 degrees and lower, you really need to make the fish want to eat in order to catch them. I try and fish the warmest water on a lake, as fish in these areas will be more active. A couple degrees in water temperature can make all the difference. Slower-moving baits work best for cold-water bass. I like baits that stay in one place and can be worked slowly, like a jig. A suspending jerkbait with Mustad KVD trebles will hang in one place, hopefully right in front of their face. Use lighter line in cold water, as it allows the bait to move more realistically. Eight or 10-pound Vicious fluorocarbon is preferable on a jerkbait. Objects in the water, especially rocks, retain heat. On sunny days, the shallow water near rocks on the bank will often be warmer. Keep in mind that fish don’t bite nearly as hard in cold water. You will feel them kind of “load up” on the bait instead of slamming it. The fish are just picking up the bait and doing as little as possible to catch it. Those “light bites” increase the importance of having a sensitive rod. I build my own rods and will tell you that MHX Rods from Mud Hole Custom Tackle help me catch more fish, especially in cold water. Higher quality graphite makes a more sensitive rod. MHX Rods are much more affordable and the quality is better than a vast majority of rods out there. For extremely light bites, I recommend the NEPS series of blanks built with Winn Grips.
