By CAM Staff A truck load of kayaks from Confluence Outdoors was overnighted to Texas for use in water rescues.

I

t was an historic hurricane season. With Harvey battering the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast and Irma strafing the length of Florida, damage from high winds and flooding was catastrophic. It is in such trying times that the American spirit shines. Harvey slammed ashore near Rockport, Texas on Aug. 25 and stalled out over southeast Texas, dropping up to 52 inches of rain over the next five days. The flooding was cataclysmic. Major highways turned to rivers and much of the Houston area was under water. Even as floodwaters rose, lines began forming on the sides of the highway. These were volunteers headed into the deluge to launch boats from freeway off-ramps. It looked like the launch line for the world’s largest fishing tournament. It was a proud moment for the fishing community. Anglers from all over the region rushed to the rescue pulling bass boats, jonboats and skiffs. Dubbed the Cajun Navy, this rag-tag bunch of heroes— along with official emergency response—conducted thousands of water recues. And response from the fishing and boating industries was strong as well. The following are few examples of how the fishing industry stepped in with a helping hand. Confluence Outdoors leaped into action as the magnitude of the flooding became clear. They overnighted a semi-truck load of Wilderness Systems and Perception kayaks to Houston. The boats, as well as paddles and PFDs provided by Confluence, were used in high-water rescue by Houston authorities. Honda went to work moving needed products like generators and water pumps to affected areas. And while Honda dealers went to work in rescue efforts, Honda Marine went to work making sure those dealers were stocked up to serve their communities with vital equipment. Additionally, Honda pledged $100,000 to the American Red Cross. The pledge will consist of a corporate contribution as well as a dollar-for-dollar matching gift program for Honda associate contributions. Evinrude immediately donated a boat and motor to a volunteer fire department in Lockport, Texas. The second phase of their relief effort was to deploy a wave of engines to area boatbuilders as well as food and clothing. Evinrude also agreed to match dollar-for-dollar donations to the American Red Cross made by employees. Suzuki, through its Texas dealers, donated boats, motors, ATVs and time to the rescue efforts. In addition, Suzuki provided two outboards to rescue efforts for Carolina Skiff boats that were on their way to Ron Hoover Marine, which has multiple locations in the affected area. Orvis recognized an immediate need for rain gear and wading gear. As well as supplying as many as they could, Orvis put the call out for individuals to ship waders, boots and rain jackets to the San Antonio Orvis location for distribution to rescue personnel. Platypus Fishing Line pledged to donate 100 percent of its website profits in September to the Red Cross Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. The storms and damage from this season’s hurricanes were enormous, and so was the outpouring of support. As anglers and boaters, we should be proud of the response from our community.

Fly Fishing GEAR

Simms G3 Guide Stockingfoot Wader

Goat Head Spool Clips

Without sacrificing durability, Simms’ has constructed its most comfortable, best fitting and most breathable wader in the new G3 Guide Stockingfoot Wader. The G3 Guide was awarded Best Fly Fishing Accessory at ICAST 2017. Constructed with 4-layer GORE-TEX Pro Shell fabric in the legs and three-layer in the upper, this wader concentrates durability where it is needed most while providing added breathability. It takes comfort and mobility to a new level. The wader comes equipped with a chest pocket, removable flip-out Tippet Tender , hand-warmer pockets, integrated utility tabs and also features Simms’ patented front and back leg seams, gravel guards, and suspenders with opposing YKK buckles that allow for a waist-high conversion. It is available in models for men and women.

How many times have your clunky old tippet caddies gotten tangled in the bushes or hung up in slack line? Goat Head Spool Clips are an ingenious new way to carry spools of tippets more securely. Their simple and compact design keeps your spools handy yet out of the way at the same time. A single Spool Clip will hold two standard tippet spools and fits securely to most nylon straps. Spool Clips are made in the U.S.A. from 100 percent recycled plastic. They are simple, rugged, compact, versatile and always ready when you need them.

Douglas Argus Reel There is no denying the beauty and simplicity of a clickcheck reel. Without the advantage of a disc drag, the angler is more in touch with the fish and fights are more fun. The Douglas Argus Fly Reel is a fine looking click-check reel that gets you closer to the fish. It is a shared legacy between longtime anglers and the next demanding generation. On one hand, it is a beautiful reel. On the other, there is no undue advantage given to the angler. Reel includes a twilled pouch. It is made in Upstate New York out of machined bar stock 6061 aircraft aluminum with a standard arbor, and reversible click check with rim-positioned adjustment. The rim is laser textured for palming. The reel seat is constructed of marine brass.

Arc 99+ Fly Line

There is a famous quote by Wyatt Earp, “Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything.” In fly fishing, accuracy is everything. The difference between success and failure is often measured in inches. All modern fly rods are powerful, but accuracy is the new frontier in design. Making an 80-foot cast in saltwater is prospecting. Making a forty-foot cast on the nose of a laid-up tarpon is fishing. The H3 brings a fundamental shift from flex profiles to a new frontier in accuracy and purpose-driven design. Helios 3F and 3D each offer uncompromising purpose. 3F is accuracy with finesse, a dry fly angler’s dream. 3D is accuracy with power at distance for pinpoint delivery of larger flies. The difference is taper and stiffness, but the design foundation of accuracy remains constant. The H3 is the pinnacle of purpose, designed to master the moment and meet the demands of accuracy on a spring creek with a 3F or a tarpon flat with a 3D.

www.orvis.com

Designed for today’s faster action fly rods, the ARC 99+ is a half line size heavier and features a more condensed taper than standard true-to-size fly lines. This additional weight and specialized taper design loads fast action rods easier, resulting in longer, more accurate casts. Built around our 6 percent low-stretch Response Core, the ARC 99+ incorporates the latest advancements in fly line design, including transition zones, a super high floating permanent Nano PTFE coating and a low-friction, grooved line profile. We call this ZNG Technology. This makes the ARC 99+ one of the longest casting, highest floating and easiest mending fly lines on the market today. 10

O

ur grandfathers used old-school bamboo fly rods to create some of the greatest fishing stories of all time. That most of these stories took place on famous trout streams still influences what people think about bamboo’s place in fly fishing. Caleb Turner, of Turner Bamboo Fly Rods, has a different take on bamboo rods in the modern world. “Bamboo has a special place in the very heart of fly fishing, from the great western streams to the small streams of the Appalachians, but they don’t come to mind when people are talking the salt flats,” Caleb said. According to the Turners, there’s a misconception that there are no fast action bamboo fly rods, and that only the fastest action rods can be used in saltwater. Most rod makers and bamboo enthusiasts know this isn’t only untrue… it isn’t even the point.

“The feel found in bamboo rods is often confused with action for people picking up a bamboo rod for the first time,” Caleb said. “When they feel the action in the rod, they often over accelerate their forward cast causing them to lose energy in the line.” Caleb’s recommendation is to let the rod do the work, and to concentrate on technique. “It’s easier to feel when the rod is loaded with bamboo, and this really comes more into play for us on the flats than trout streams,” he said. What the Turners do differently than most other bamboo rod makers is cater to saltwater fly fishing. They are located in Mississippi right next to some of the most technical redfish flats on the Gulf Coast. “We design our saltwater fly rods with a fast action for stiff winds and quick-moving redfish that spook way more easily than their Louisiana counterparts,” Caleb said. With water the same color as the redfish, wind, and the need to have eyes of an Osprey, fly fishing the Mississippi Gulf Coast is more like bonefishing. “Bamboo gives us the action we need, the feel we need, and it’s able to load up at short distances but also extend a long cast to extremely wary redfish found around here.” Caleb said. “Tonkin cane grows in a 30-square-kilometer area in the Orient’s Sui River Valley. It is praised as the strongest species of bamboo with the greatest thickness of power fibers. These power fibers are what give bamboo rods what they have more than other material used in crafting fly rods, their touch. Despite what action you desire, bamboo rods offer a certain touch you just can’t get with anything else. If a rod is designed correctly, you can have all the action you need and still have that great feel. The rod lets you know when it’s loaded instead of having to figure out the timing for that individual rod.” In short, bamboo fly rods definitely have their place in modern performing fly rods. Accuracy, touch and presentation are things bamboo rod makers strive for in crafting their rods. If you get a hold of a quality rod, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by all the things it can do. For more information on bamboo fly rods or Turner Bamboo Fly Rods visit www.turnerflyrods.com or email caleb@turnerflyrods.com.

was a dime-bright fish of only 6 or so iK e pounds that still had the power to get j o s, Ic the reel deep into its backing. There is no better way to begin a fishing journey than when it all comes together early on. We knew we would be experiencing yet another trip of a lifetime. With the sun only slightly hitting the horizon and a brief glimpse of darkness for what seems like only minutes, the days are filled with subtle takes of the fly, followed by sips of Brennivin, cast and repeat. We ended the trip in the same fashion as it started. Another sleek salmon peels line and leaps. At the end of the run, Raven dips the net and we release the fish to bid farewell for what is hopefully only another year until we return. With Raven being the pilot, Brian, Kyle and I explored areas that have been experienced by few. Targeting trophy fish in such a landscape with close friends only solidifies the need for one to explore, be bewildered and experience life events that shape you as a person. Iceland will leave your soul fulfilled but still wanting more.

a

C

asting into a pool where fish leap and dragons rise brings emotions that cannot be found in many places. From the etched lava landscape to the clean cold water, Iceland offers anglers a backdrop to a story that will always begin with the statement, “It was the trip of a lifetime.” With three trips in three consecutive years, I can use the all-too cliché fishing phrase, “I am hooked” on Iceland. Page after page can be written about the acrobatic Atlantic salmon, the headstrong pull of a sea-run brown trout, the rocky canyons, waterfalls, and the art of fishing a hitched tube-fly. There is so much that pulls an angler to Icelandic rivers. For the past three years, I have spent the end of July fishing the Laxa i Kjos, a smaller river in southwestern Iceland about an hour from the capital city, Reykjavik. The river allows an angler to experience much of what Icelandic topography has to offer. From the large pools in the coastal beats, where an angler can’t help but stare out toward the Atlantic Ocean, to the meandering turns of the pastoral meadow sections, and deep narrow-cut canyons that carve the hillside until you reach Thorufoss, the impassable falls, home to a famous scene from the popular series “Game of Thrones.” The landscape, at least to me, is secondary to those that accompany you on the journey. On this year’s trip, I was fortunate enough to return to the river with good friends: Brian, who has made the trip with me before; Kyle, a friend who would be experiencing this fabled land for the first time; and our guide Hrafn (Raven), who brings an entire new appreciation to the fly fishing guide world with a persona that is somewhat mythical, just like the waters we were wading in. Arriving in Iceland, most anglers have aspirations of watching a tube fly skate across the surface of crystal waters, witnessing the careful eat of the fly and the line going tight with the initial run of one of the fly world’s most sought after quarry, an Atlantic salmon. We were fortunate enough to be those anglers. The first fish of the trip was caught soon after arrival. It

MAG BAY 33

Howarth, along with his son Barrett, are building on a heritage of superb design and meticulous craftsmanship. Top-quality components, premium interiors and functional features all come standard on a Mag Bay. They are built to last, and can be customized to fit the owner’s needs for fishing or cruising. One look at the specs, however, will tell you she can be rigged out as a serious angling platform with an approximate range of 350 miles. With multiple hull designs, the Mag Bay 33 is available with amenities like wireless windlass, various seating and lighting options, oversized display screens, joystick, Seakeeper gyro, side door, extra large top and much more.

Since 2015, Mag Bay Yachts has been building on what is sure to become a legendary tradition of high quality sportfishing boats. The Mag Bay 33 is a center console that bridges the gap between elegance and function. An initial patented hull designed by Michael Peters Yacht Designs, of Sarasota, Fla., presents gorgeously unique lines that are sure to turn heads. A modern yet classic look is as sleek at the docks as it is slicing through the seas offshore. And built with the heart of a fishing boat, she is as at home serving as a yacht tender as she is in varied seas as a dryriding, nimble-handling tournament fishing machine. That was the idea when the co-founders of Cabo Yachts launched Mag Bay. Cabo’s Mike

onefish & Tarpon Trust’s Sixth International Science Symposium will take place Nov. 10-11 at the Bonaventure Resort and Spa in Weston, Fla. Open to anglers, scientists, conservationists and fishing industry representatives, this global gathering will also kick off BTT’s 20th Anniversary celebration. “This year’s symposium promises to be the largest and most significant in our history,” said BTT President Jim McDuffie. “We have assembled the foremost scientists in the flats world to present their latest research findings on bonefish, tarpon and permit, and explain how newly acquired knowledge will benefit the conservation of our fisheries.” In addition to presentations by leading scientists, the symposium will spotlight angling legends who will share their time-tested techniques for catching the iconic gamefish of the flats. Andy Mill, Chico Fernandez, C.A. Richardson, Steve Huff, and Rick Ruoff will be among the greats on hand to offer instruction on an indoor casting lane. New to this year’s symposium is a Flats Expo, showcasing the products and services of industry leaders, from the latest technical developments in the sport to world-renowned fishing lodges and outfitters. Fly tying and photography clinics, and an Art & Film Festival also highlight the schedule, along with a banquet honoring conservation heroes. Dinner guests will have the chance to compete for auction items, including bucket-list destination trips, fine art, top-of-the-line spin and fly-fishing gear, and a special BTT 20th Anniversary trip to fish and conduct research with BTT-affiliated scientists. As always, the role of science-based approaches to conservation will be the centerpiece of the event, featuring presentations and Q&A about the latest research on bonefish, tarpon, permit— the species, their habitats, and the larger fisheries they support— as well as panel discussions on how science is guiding BTT initiatives in Florida and across the Caribbean Basin. Of special note will be several recently concluded studies that aim to benefit the Florida fishery. “One of the best things about the symposium is that everyone is able to see how the research informs conservation, and how this helps to protect and restore flats fisheries. It really is unique to be able to participate in this process and see it at work, from start to finish,” said Dr. Aaron Adams, BTT Director of Science and Conservation. BTT’s mission statement is “To conserve and restore bonefish, tarpon and permit fisheries and habitats through research, stewardship, education and advocacy.” To obtain a media pass for the event, contact Nick Roberts: nick@bonefishtarpontrust. org. GULFSTREAM YACHTS Gulfstream Yachts is coming up on its 10-year anniversary and turning out some of the best boats it has ever built. With a dedicated focus to safety, Gulfstream designs customizable center consoles as comfortable fishing or cruising as they are unsinkable.

Gulfstream 34CC The 34CC is a hard-core fishing machine with features that make excursions comfortable and enjoyable for anyone. A unique feature of the 34CC is the large bed area inside the center console that is perfect for finding shade or shelter from the storm, and it can air-conditioned. An advanced hull with a delta pad along the rear 12 feet of the running surface and an integrated stepped transom bracket capable of handling twin or triple motors reduces drag. These features help the boat plane almost instantaneously. One, two or three livewells carry as much bait as you need, and an ergonomically designed console accommodates large electronics. Five large insulated fish/storage boxes hold ice for extended periods because of the boat’s foam-filled construction. This boat was designed for the serious tournament angler or the weekend warrior, and it can be tailored to the owner’s preferences. Length 34’0” Airline_Ad_CoastalAngler_8-1-14_Layout 1 8/1/14 1:14 PM Page 1 Beam 9’11”

Draft 28” Fuel 300 Gal. (400 Gal. option) Dry Weight 7,000 Pounds Recommended Power: 600-1050 HP (twins or triples)

Gulfstream 52 In its 52, Gulfstream introduces what is perhaps the most unique center console ever built. It is a hard-core fishing and diving boat offering unsurpassed comfort with an air-conditioned helm and passenger seating area that can serve as a second bedroom. The large cockpit and forward sunpad offer ample outdoor space, and the enclosure can be converted to open-air. Other key elements of the 52’s design are high gunnel walls and generous passageways for easy access to all areas of the boat. Gulfstream collaborated with Setzer Yacht Architects and Michael Peters Yacht Design using their patented Stepped “V” Ventilated Tunnel hull to give this vessel the feature set of a larger yacht. It’s a great standalone boat and the ultimate multipurpose yacht tender with a customizable layout to suit the owner’s needs for fishing or cruising. anal Lights come in a few colors and styles. There are white and green lights, and above or below the surface models. Each has its benefits and setbacks. I think most would agree that the green underwater lights are better for watching the fish swim rather than catching them. I have heard a few theories with the most popular being the fish can see the lures better with the light coming from the bottom. With that thought, I tried a

new technique that worked great for us, and I think it can help you catch a few more of those finicky green-light seatrout as well. Kayaking the canal lights was the right choice for our Saturday night activities. Three of us all threw Jerk Shad style soft plastics in pearl, black/blue glitter and black/gold/lime. Pearl appeared to have a slight edge over the other two. While the color didn’t have much of a correlation to our hookup ratio, one rigging method did. We all started fishing the bait using a different weight of weedless hook, from 1/8 oz. and 1/16 oz. to even lighter than that, and even with no weight at all. One stood out as the best choice by far over the others, the weightless hook with floatation in the lures to slow the fall. Once we determined what the trout wanted, it was fish after fish. We kept our limit of 30 and released more than we wanted to count. We tuned each lure to have a super slow fall, much slower than any standard plastic with a weightless hook. We adjusted the amount of floatation depending on the size and brand of hook we were using. The rod action was very subtle, just a steady rise of the rod tip then back down reeling up just a little of the slack, making sure not to move the lure forward. Anything more aggressive only resulted in a few strikes. The flat slow fall in clear water was what they were looking for. You could count five to almost 10 seconds at times before the lure would sink out of sight. That is how slow the fall was, and that is what triggered the strikes. What I love most about fishing is that I never stop learning new techniques. If you fish the lights at night and can’t get those underwater green-light trout to eat, this is a method to get them. Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

s Florida and the Caribbean continue to recover from Hurricane Irma, those of us whose livelihoods either depend on fishing or simply work to support a fishing habit, are probably wondering how natural disasters impact fish. Here’s an interesting perspective from TheFisheriesblog.com on the impacts of hurricanes upon fish. Studying fish responses to hurricanes can be difficult. Hurricanes are relatively rare events that come with little warning and unpredictable storm paths (as many along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts are all too familiar with). Destructive winds and storm surge during a hurricane can damage or destroy the equipment and infrastructure (for example, field stations) biologists need to study fish populations and prevent field observations for days or weeks after a storm has passed. These challenges make it difficult to design controlled studies aimed at understanding hurricane effects on fish. Most of the information we have on fish responses to hurricanes comes from either long-term monitoring studies or short-term research projects that had the unfortunate luck of being interrupted by a hurricane. Despite these limitations, findings from studies such as these can shed light on what happens below the water’s surface following a hurricane. In the open ocean, hurricanes can alter ocean productivity, leading to an increase in food availability for some fishes. Using data from a series of repeatedly sampled cruise transects in the Pacific Ocean off southwest Mexico, researchers at NOAA found that tropical storm cyclonic activity increased the upwelling of deep, nutrient-rich ocean waters. These nutrients fueled blooms of algae and zooplankton (microscopic animal life that feed on algae) which persisted for up four weeks. In turn, gut content fullness (an indicator of feeding success) of planktivorous flying fish doubled in an area that had been affected by a tropical cyclone. Prior to hurricane landfall, some larger fishes may evacuate coastal bays and estuaries areas ahead of the storm. In September 2001, as Tropical Storm Gabrielle approached Tampa, FL juvenile blacktip sharks

that had been marked with acoustic tags left their shallow nursery habitat in Terra Ceia Bay, Florida and moved to deeper water. Researchers hypothesized this movement was triggered by falling barometric pressure ahead of the storm and may represent an innate behavior to avoid dangerous conditions. After a hurricane makes landfall, excess water either in the form of storm surges or flooding is typically the most destructive force acting on coastal communities and cities. For fish as well, both storm surge (an influx of salty ocean water) and freshwater flooding may pose challenges. Although fish that live in estuaries are adapted to deal with fluctuating salinity levels, hurricanes can dramatically alter salinity levels in estuarine waters leading to substantial changes in fish communities. In the tidal freshwater habitats of Louisiana’s Breton Sound estuary, storm surges from Hurricane Katrina in 2005 caused salinity to be elevated above normal levels for 6 months following the storm. In response, fish communities in the freshwater habitats of Breton Sound estuary shifted from being dominated by freshwater species (e.g., mosquitofish, bluegill, spotted sunfish) to one containing mostly brackish or marine species (inland silverside, clown goby, Atlantic croaker, Gulf menhaden). It was not until a full year after the storm that the Breton Sound fish community returned to its pre-storm, freshwater community composition. Flooding can also have multiple effects on fish. When rivers top their natural banks or man-made levies, riverine fish may gain access to beneficial floodplain habitats that may be used for feeding or reproduction. Floods also allow fish to move between previously disconnected systems (such as oxbow lakes and river channels). Additionally, high flow events associated with hurricane-induced rain events can act as a cue, signaling fish to initiate spawning migrations. Excessive rainfall during hurricanes can also cause another problem: hypoxia (aka “dead zones”). This occurs when excessive rainfall washes off high levels of organic materials into rivers and estuaries. These organic materials can come from natural sources

(plant material or the organic matter in soils) or from human activities affected by flooding (overflows of wastewater treatment plants, excessive run-off from animal waste facilities, and inundation of agricultural croplands). When excess organic materials enter and accumulate in aquatic systems, the biological break down of these materials can consume nearly all of the available dissolved in aquatic systems, leading

to hypoxic conditions. Fish, like other vertebrates, require oxygen to meet their basic metabolic demands. However, instead of breathing air to acquire oxygen, fish absorb dissolved oxygen from water as it passes over their gills. When dissolved oxygen levels in aquatic systems plummet rapidly, fish kills can occur. Even though hurricanes may cause changes in fish behavior, alter estuarine fish distributions, or cause

fish kills, most coastal fish species combination of these stressors and and populations are likely resilient disturbances may push some species to Hurricane-related disturbances, towards the brink. as they have occurred for millennia in coastal ecosystems. However, the The Fisheries Blog was started in frequency and intensity of hurricanes 2011 by a group of scientists who is predicted to increase with continue are professional fisheries scientists climate change. fter an extremely active hurricane season, we are all glad that October has finally made its way back to us. Early fall marks the start of another transition period along the Treasure Coast. As the waters start to cool back down from the upper 80s and low 90s, northwest winds will push dolphin, blackfin tuna, wahoo, and most of all, sailfish back down our coast line. This time of year, especially towards the end of the month and into November, trolling is usually the preferred method of fishing. Four small naked ballyhoo rigged on Mustad ultra-point circle hooks and

a bigger bait with a skirt or Scylla Lure rigged on wire is a pretty good go to set up. I strongly recommend pulling at least one dredge teaser if you're not yet, and I always pull a squid chain for that Off the Chain bite. Weed lines, current edges, and color changes from 90 to 225 feet are typically the best areas to focus on this time of year, but if surface conditions are not visible you can always fall back to trolling or drifting along the reef line and numerous areas with good bottom contour. Bait will typically congregate around these areas, in turn attracting bigger fish. Capt. Bill Shuda's Homeport Chart #36 is a great way to see which areas are most productive and get a good lay of the land. Bottom fishing this time a year is usually pretty good as well, especially over the last few years. Grouper season is open until January 1 and mutton, mangrove, and lane snapper, along with seabass, will be biting good through the next few months as well. Check out Capt. Rocky's Stuart area deep sea forecast for a more detailed bottom fishing report. Whatever it is you decide to do this October, I hope it's extremely successful and your next fishing trip is Off the Chain.

ullet of all sizes have arrived in big numbers on the Treasure Coast, which means fishing in October is outstanding for snook in the Indian and St. Lucie rivers. You can load up a couple dozen finger mullet in one throw of the cast net. Free line a mullet near the docks and/or seawalls for snook waiting to ambush the bait. If we continue to have massive amounts of freshwater runoff, fish the deeper bridges

with mullet or shrimp on jig heads because the saltier water will be near the bottom. Casting big jigs at night around the Quarter Bridge with a slow crawl just off the bottom has been producing snook. There are plenty of big jacks blasting the bait schools. Any topwater plug with fast action will get their attention and for a novice angler they will never forget the fight. A little dip in water temperatures and less daylight will bring the macs and blues to our waters from up north. Cut bait or Krocs spoons for the blues and anything green and shiny for the macs will do the trick. Black drum and sheepshead can be caught on small pieces of shrimp or fiddler crabs fished near rocky channels or close to bridge pilings. Indian River trout will be on the edges of the mullet schools, so watch for

he tropical ghosts of last month will continue to haunt the anglers who seek saltwater treats, offshore of the Treasure Coast during the fall days of October. Sinister low-pressure systems will still have the potential to form and then lurk near our coast, as the peak of the hurricane season will span through the latter weeks of this month. Weather, as always, will be the key component that inevitably shapes our offshore fishing strategies. find an influx of some species of deep water (250 feet or deeper) fish that are “pushed” inshore as a result. Large, gag grouper and jumbo, vermilion snapper are a couple examples of bottom dwelling species that can magically turn up on inshore reefs from 70 to 150 feet of water. If and when the offshore weather scenario settles down this month, strategies that highlight bottom fishing will continue to be the “go to” plan of choice. Most species of our local snapper and grouper families will be solidly populating Martin County's offshore bottom structures. Lane and mutton snapper will make an inshore jog this month and will be found in good numbers around and atop of the vast array of artificial reefs in 50 to 70 feet of water (go to martinreefs. com for GPS coordinates). October will have the opportunity to bloom into a “Snapptober”, provided that a user-friendly weather window reveals itself for the offshore anglers of the Treasure Coast.

in the mornings. Harbor Branch, Queen's Cove and Middle Cove are all great areas to fish for trout around the Treasure Coast. Look for some sheephead, black drum and snapper around the bridges, docks and channel edges. The surf will be alive with jacks, snook, bluefish and other predators, which will all be chasing the bait schools along the beach. Snook season has been in full swing for the past month and anglers are always looking for that slot fish to take home. Beaches, jetties, bridges and mangroves are all popular areas to seek snook. Top water lures, D.O.A. Bait Busters, C.A.L. Airheads and live baits are all great ways to target snook in October. Have fun this month! Try to get a jig near these wads and get ready to crank. On the reef, the action continues with big snappers taking the bait, the mutton snappers have grown shoulders over the summer making for big catches. The king bite is ferocious and the amberjacks are showing up as well making October a great time to test your strength with a speedy king or a big old donkey! ctober marks the transition into the fall weather patterns along the Treasure Coast. You can expect temperatures to begin to cool down somewhat into more comfortable days to enjoy the outdoors. Water temperatures will begin to slowly cool off as well. This year has brought us lots of rain and Hurricane Irma so far. Irma was not kind to Florida! October provides great weather and hungry fish. It's a fantastic month to be fishing! The fall mullet run will continue to dominate the area as large schools of finger mullet fill the beaches, inlets and rivers of the area. You can expect lots of big fish to be feeding on them both day and night. Snook

basin and bridges as well as many of the deeper docks around the river. Lighted docks are especially productive when fishing at night. Redfish has continued to be a wonderful fishery for us again this year. Each year has seen their population increase and many anglers have enjoyed the experience of fishing a large school of reds this year. October will continue to be a productive month for those who seek redfish on the flats. D.O.A. shrimp or C.A.L. grub tails are two of the best choices for redfish along with a variety of live and cut baits. The west shoreline south of Fort Pierce is always a good area when looking for redfish. The trout bite will be good this month. Get out early with a top water lure for some exciting action on the river. Switch to a D.O.A. shrimp or C.A.L. jerk bait later

ow that all the cleanup is finished from Hurricane Irma, let's get back to fishing. As the weather starts to cool off some, you can look for the fishing to get better. The schools of bait fish should be coming in the Fort Pierce Inlet with plenty of action not far behind. The snook bite in the Fort Pierce Inlet should be good for anglers using live baits, like greenies and mullet, and fishing them during the outgoing tides on the bottom at places like Judy Rock or the cleaning

station in the Fort Pierce Inlet. Also in the Fort Pierce Inlet, the Spanish mackerel and bluefish will be showing up and they will take anything shiny. Look for the trout and redfish in the deeper holes and channels around the flats. They will be taking a live shrimp fished under a popping cork and fish in five to seven feet of water when the water starts to cool down. The local bridges should be holding some nice snapper, sheepshead and black drum. Try fishing a live shrimp on a #2 hook and a half-to-one-ounce weight. Around the South Jetty there should be some flounder on the beach side. A large live shrimp or mud minnows fished on an eighthounce or quarter-ounce Trol-Rite hook. In the surf, the whiting and pompano bite should improve later in the month. Shrimp, clams or sandfleas will all be a good choice.

ctober has arrived and with it will be the start of slightly cooling water temperatures. The waters to our north will cool down faster than the Treasure Coast and this will start our fall mahi mahi run. This is when the mahi start heading south through our area. The fall run is not as large and does not last as long as the spring mahi run, but there will be more mahi in our area looking for a meal than through the summer time when the

surface temperatures were in the middle to upper 80s and cold water was in the lower depths. The mahi this time of year don’t usually average the size of spring time but you can still catch a nice one in the 20-to-25-pound range. Trolling is the best-known method for targeting mahi during the fall run. Multitudes of live bait will be in the area to catch, including the mullet run. You can net the mullet and use them as live bait to catch mahi. Normal tackle set-up used for trolling is 20-to-30 pounds but when live bait trolling use a 50-pound leader as it will be less noticeable at a slower speed. When trolling with live bait, keep your baits spread out at different distances behind your boat and always keep one in your prop-wash. A faster trolling method to cover more ground when targeting mahi is to use rigged ballyhoo and colorful trolling lures. Ballyhoo

and lures can be trolled at higher speeds when looking for a mahi hookup, allowing you to canvas a greater area. When trolling these baits, 30-pound tackle will still be sufficient but I would suggest using 60-to-80-pound leader to compensate for the higher speeds (since it is moving faster it won’t be seen as easily as slower live bait trolling speed). Whichever trolling bait preference you have, always use mono main line instead of braid because you will want the stretch for the trolling strike. Everyone focuses on weed lines, rips and floating debris when looking for mahi but keep a live bait in the water when a bottom or wreck fishing, a nice mahi can always be caught in open water too. The water conditions will start getting rougher when the cool fronts start moving in, so get out on the water and enjoy some time catching!

I

am sitting here writing this forecast after finishing my preparations for hurricane Irma. I am somewhat relieved that the latest models show that the storm won’t turn north until it is directly south of the Florida peninsula, lessening the chances of this tropical terror riding the east coast of Florida like the tracks of some perverse amusement ride. Even Irma, only two days away, is completely uncertain at this point. It is difficult to predict the fishing in Sebastian next month when the future of the entire state is anyone’s guess. I can safely say that water levels in the lagoon will be high, salinities will be low and the clarity will likely be marginal at best. These environmental factors may be the least of the issues to cope with in the Sebastian area after the storm, because you can’t catch fish regardless

of environmental conditions if you can’t get to them. After Francis and Jean in 2004, it was several months before boat ramps, marinas, and the facilities at Sebastian Inlet State Park were re-opened. If you are coming from out of town to fish the inlet or lagoon, you may want to check with a local tackle shop or call the chamber of commerce at (772) 589-5969 to check the status of the public boat ramps. Once things settle down, the fishing should be good. If you get an opportunity to fish Sebastian this October the following may point you in the right general direction. Sebastian River – The Sebastian River has juvenile tarpon in it 12 months a year, but in the winter and summer they have short bite windows and can be downright frustrating. Spring is good, but the tarpon don’t feed with the urgency that they do in the fall. Add in a million or so tasty finger mullet and the term frenzy could be applied on occasion. Live fingers fished wherever rolling tarpon are seen is the best way to put a lively twenty-something-pound tarpon on your line. Fly fishermen and plug casters will also enjoy some of the best tarpon action of the year, throw finger

flats on their ceaseless hunt for mullet. The occasional snook will surprise anglers on the flats, but most of the inshore snook will be setting up ambushes along mangrove shorelines and around docks. D.O.A. Shrimp and Jerkbaits fished in, around and under the cover will draw strikes from linesiders of all sizes. Sebastian Inlet – October is a prime month to fish the world-renowned Sebastian Inlet. Snook fishing day and night will peak out in October. ctober is a great month to get offshore and enjoy the cooler weather. It can be a windy month, but there will be great weather days, especially earlier in the month. The mullet run will be going strong all month. This means there will be solid action close to shore and around Sebastian Inlet. This is the best month to hook a giant redfish around the inlet. Also, large schools of reds can be seen migrating well offshore sometimes. Keep your eyes open for this amazing sight. You’ll think they are large jacks until you notice the water has turned red. Don’t turn your nose up at the large jacks either. There can be large schools of bruisers this month cruising miles off shore too. Early October is probably the best month for large tarpon along the beach in our area. Look for them busting big mullets along the beach and throw a large mullet in the melee. Dolphin should be a good bet

Debbie Kelcey of Sebastian, caught this sweet bull dolphin in 80 feet of water out of Sebastian. She and her friend Lee Anne were catching schoolie dolphin when we they saw this fish mixed in. this month. The water is still warm and clean water and baitfish will keep the fish this side of the Gulf Stream. Trolling a typical dolphin spread in the Gulf Stream will catch fish this month. As usual, troll around the birds, weed lines and color changes. When the bite slows, one effective trick is to set out a chum bag and wait for the fish to come to you. Turn the engine off around a fishy looking area and put out a chum bag. Be patient and let the chum deploy for the better part of an hour. Drop a couple pieces

of chunk bait in the water on a 6/0 circle hook and relax. Keep your eye on the water and have a live bait ready for finicky fish. A piece of single strand wire will catch the occasional wahoo. Watch out for the shrimp boats out in that 130 feet area. The black fins, bonito and other predators will swarm around them early in the morning as they release their bycatch. Try chumming with a frozen block or chunks in the general area of the boats to get the bite going again. If you want to try for a home run,

October is one of the top months for swordfishing in our area. When the weather turns stable in October, many experienced offshore anglers will take a chance on catching one of these delicious monsters. Night time fishing is preferred as the fish rise to the surface from the 1000 feet depths to feed. A rigged squid drifted at various depths is the traditional technique. Daytime fishing for swords has become more popular and usually requires presenting baits very deep. Gear, tackle and techniques are too much to cover here, but it suffices to say that heavy gear is required to do battle with one of these monsters. Bottom fishing can be slow this month, but there are snapper to be caught. Mutton and mangroves can swarm pretty well around the full and new moon cycles, especially during early morning and night. There is some serious talk from South Atlantic Fish Management Council to open a red snapper season in 2018. A longshot possibility is a short red snapper season in the remaining months of 2018. Keep your ears open for these seasons. There are plenty of big, beautiful red snappers that would love to come home to dinner if a season opens. Best of luck out there and remember when life gets hectic, stay calm and go fishing!

all has finally come to south Florida and it will sure be a welcome relief from this hot and rainy summer. Even with the hot temperatures and higher than normal water levels, the fishing has been pretty good all summer, but with some cooling water temperatures the fishing is about to get red hot. The BIG bass will be migrating from the open water toward spawning areas in all areas of the lake and there will be better numbers of bass to catch for sure. The lake is in very good condition and even though the water level is a higher then we like, it should not affect fishing for the coming season. My answer is if you have a soft plastic you are comfortable with and can throw in grass, then that is what

INSHORE — The mullet run is upon us. Snook, tarpon, redfish and trout will all be cooperating this month. Matching the hatch will be your best bet during this time. Super Spooks, D.O.A. Bait Busters and anything that has the shape of a mullet will be the go to baits. With the presence of so much bait, the thought then goes to how do I get my bait to be hit. I like trying to go with color that stands out in the pack. Try dark or bright colors to get the attention away from the group of bait. Focus your cast on the edges of the mullet schools and you will do well.

Offshore — The shallow fall dolphin run should start to occur this month. Look for them to start to move into the more attainable depths from 100 to 250 feet of water. Another thing to get excited about is the snapper bite. Look to target mutton snapper and yellowtail snapper in 60 to 100 feet of water. I love using mullet this time of year for both bottom fishing and trolling. It is readily available and a great hardy bait to keep alive on your kayak. Check us out Pushin’ Water Kayak Charters on Facebook, Instagram and Youtube for all the latest adventures my clients and I get into. See you on the water!

you should start with. I like to throw the Big EZ from Gambler, fluke, or senko across the grass especially to start the day, but will sometimes throw it all day long. On days when there is a nice breeze and the water is still clean on the outside grass lines, I will throw a spinner-bait or Zara Spook or Spook Junior to try and catch some schooling bass. But to have the best chance to catch a Lake Okeechobee Bucket Lips, we use live bait “wild shiners” and they just out fish artificial in both size and numbers in the fall and winter. Now is the time to start planning those Okeechobee bass fishing trips to Lake Okeechobee for the fall and winter months when it is the coldest up north. The crappie “speck” bite should start picking up by November and we are looking forward another awesome season. Don’t forget to get a your kids/ grand kids out fishing and also please take the time to thank a veteran by taking him or her fishing for a little stress relief. Until the next report, good luck, tight lines, and Bucket Lips. I hope to see everyone on the water! These are some of my suggestions for an artificial lure. Live Target makes some of the most realistic lures imaginable. D.O.A. Lures makes probably my most confident lure for the mullet run. I have caught so many big snook and tarpon on a D.O.A. Bait Buster. If you are not using this lure during this time of year, I will not be mad at you. But if you are the person that is always going to use live bait, try a couple small things to make your mullet stand out. Putting a very small cut on the side of the

By this time of year, you probably won't have to look very hard for bait. Some areas that will hold plenty of bait will be any of the smaller creeks in the St. Lucie River. If you are fishing in the Indian River Lagoon, go to the side of the river that the wind is coming from. This will help you find more bait. Carroll Green with a big snook. What do the ratings mean? POOR day basically means the fish will either steal all your bait or will not even touch your line. FAIR day means that you catch one or two fish but you will have to work hard to do so. GOOD day means that you will catch enough fish to feel gratified. BEST day means that you will catch something almost every time you cast your line in the water. SOURCE: The Old Farmers’ 2017 Almanac

reasure Coast diving conditions will be interesting this month once the effects of large ocean swells fade away. Many divers look forward to exploring area reefs after a hurricane passes since many dive sites and the creatures that inhabit them tend to be rearranged and found in new places. In years past, lobster and big grouper have been reported in area where they are usually less common making every dive an exciting exploration. Visibility reports have been scarce and divers may have to do some reconnaissance when planning the next trip. The Titan tug out of Stuart is a great dive site to test visibility, temperature and current since it is directly east of the St. Lucie Inlet and just a few

dozen feet from the Six Mile Reef. A quick bounce dive to determine conditions could prove beneficial. If visibility is bad, head south towards the loran tower ledge or reefs off Hobe Sound. If good, dive sites closer to shore maybe better, including the Donaldson Reef area, Guardian Reef, Pipe Barge or the Cement (concrete) Barge. Also affecting local diving will be the fact that Lake Okeechobee is at a ten year high. No doubt freshwater releases will be a hot topic amongst the boating community, and divers should be aware of a few important points relating to the discharges. Everyone knows about the harmful effects these releases have on the inshore waters of the St. Lucie River but many are surprised to learn the effects are much less apparent just a few miles outside of the inlet. One reason for this is our area’s proximity to the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. This northbound current does a great job of flushing the east coast of Florida and allowing clear water from the Caribbean to be found a few miles offshore. Another reason divers maybe surprised to find good conditions is that since its less dense, freshwater actually floats atop saltwater as it exits local

inlets. A few years ago when our area had similar releases in 2015, a few brave divers braved the black water and were shocked to find that it stopped just a few feet below the surface and beneath the murk layer the water was crystal clear. These divers reported conditions similar to a night dive with the sun being

almost completely blocked and had no problem limiting out on lobster. This time of year brings big changes to local reefs and divers should be ready to explore areas away from the inlets to find clear water. Given the effect of swells, each dive will be a brand-new area to explore.

reasure Coast Casters held its first Senior Division tournament of the 2017-2018 season on August 27. The senior tournament contains two divisions, middle school and high school. Angler Owen Nail took the first-place spot in the middle school division, as well as the biggest fish of the tournament, with a 1.15-pound snapper. Owen Nail also took home a lure filled box from D.O.A. for bringing in the biggest fish of the tournament. New senior division member Owen Nail was welcomed to the group, and Riley Orr was the lucky winner of a custom-dipped Treasure Coast Casters cup. Boat volunteers make the tournament possible, and this month volunteers included Capt. Charlie Conner, Chad Painter, Brandon Stubbs, Jamie Nail, Anna Green and Jason Franqui.

n Aug. 17, 2017, McCulley Marine Services (MMS) deployed 32 limestone special artificial reef modules for the St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program (SLCARP). MMS manufactures the modules locally and deploys the modules offshore several counties on the eastern coast of Florida. The modules were deployed in five patch reefs with six to seven modules per patch reef. Four of the five reefs contained a memorial module, including a module for the late diving consultant, Kerry Dillon. Mr. Dillon was extremely important to the SLCARP as well as many other artificial reef programs in the State. The St. Lucie County Marine Resources Advisory Committee has recommended these 32 modules be named the Kerry Dillon Trail to honor Mr. Dillon’s contributions. Each of the patch reefs is to be named according to the memorial module it contains. Individual modules within each patch were placed 40- to 70- foot centers and patches were separated by distances of 209 feet to 292 feet. The 32 modules were deployed at depths ranging from 110 to 122 feet between the Site B reef and the 120foot reef, respectively. Monitoring of these large (1,000-ton) secondary concrete reefs by Kerry Dillon and SeaRover Services has revealed black seabass, cubera snapper, gag, Goliath grouper, gray snapper, greater amberjack, ocean triggerfish, juvenile red snapper, scamp and other fishes. Artificial reef modules will be considered successful if any of these species are found inhabiting the modules. The 32 artificial reef modules were part of a 50 module the St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program was granted from the Florida Fish and

Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). In addition to the 32 limestone special modules deployed in 2017, 25 limestone special modules were deployed in 2016, including the Kyle Wahl memorial module and the Shirley Starbird Dubois memorial module. Post deployment dives by Kerry Dillon and SeaRover Services on these relatively shallow (z=57’) reefs showed immediate utilization by schooling baitfish. These 25 modules were deployed within 200 feet of existing large (1,500-ton) secondary concrete reefs deployed in 2104, 2015, and 2016. These large reefs have provided habitat for at least 23 species of fish including black grouper, black seabass, common snook, Goliath grouper, gray snapper, and lane snapper. Artificial reefs at this depth range have also provided large schools of blue runner and cigar minnows for bait. Shallow water artificial reef modules will be considered successful if they recruit any of these species are found inhabiting the large (1,500-ton) secondary concrete reefs deployed nearby. he Stuart Sailfish Club’s 39th annual Junior Angler Tournament started off very wet with two-inches of rain on the Friday evening registration of 77 young anglers from Boy Scout Troops 888 and 840, Lahia House kids, Florida Sheriff Youth Ranch (FSYR) kids from Bartow and Live Oak and Stuart Sailfish Club members kids and grandkids. Everyone huddled under a large tent at Sailfish Marina, anglers met their captains for Saturday’s event, while enjoying pizza, and hoping the skies would clear the following morning. Prayers were answered and early Saturday did bring clear skies and 18 local fishing boats for the eager anglers. Boats that took some of the kids fishing were led by head boat Safari 1, charter boat Wet and Wild, brokerage boats from Sovereign Yachts and Marine Max and some private member boats like Dr. Paul Shoppe’s Fifth Day. The results were a mix of 15 fish species with everything from sailfish, dolphin, kings, grouper, corkies, large bonito, amberjacks, tuna and cobia resulting in 40 trophies for the young anglers. The Safari 1 had the wild finish with 3 big cobia weighing up

to 44 pounds. After an official weighin by Alicia Fischer, Marena Shoup, and Kaysea Shoup, photographs were taken and anglers learned new fishing skills from Captains Chris Callaway and Richard Shoup before a barbeque lunch. Every kid won a raffle prize that included 19 bikes and assorted sporting equipment, all donated by club members and sponsors. Many of the local kids who won bikes, donated them generously back

Hurricane Irma Post-Storm News Marathon, Florida Keys

By Christy Johnson, SeaSquared Charters, Marathon, Florida

T

he most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic, Irma packed a mean punch to the Florida Keys. However, we are a resilient bunch, and will rebuild stronger and more beautiful than ever. As I write this in mid-September, crews are working around the clock to clean up debris and restore services in Marathon. Fortunately, we are a small landmass, and the clean-up efforts are contained in manageable areas. Power and cell service have already come back to a large degree. Sewers are coming online, and water pressure is good. Publix and Home Depot have reopened. Fortunately, the Keys have seen a surge in the development of modern lodging facilities and the upgrading of many of our lovely family-owned properties. Most are housing first responders currently, but will be ready to greet visitors in the near future. These include, Captain Pip’s, Gulfview Waterfront Resort, Holiday Inn Express, Indigo Reef, Coral Lagoon, Tranquility Bay, Courtyard Marriott and, of course, the beautiful Hyatt Place and Faro Blanco Resort and Marina where most of our boats are docked. There are also dozens of vacation rental properties unaffected by Hurricane Irma, with professional property managers eager to assist you. You will find links here: www.seasquaredcharters.com/where-to-stay-2/ The SeaSquared family fared pretty well. The majority of our boats are just fine and are ready to take you fishing. Our gear and tackle came out unscathed. Most of our crews’ housing and properties received only minor damage. All of us are safe, healthy, eager to get back to business and, actually can’t wait to get in on the great fishing! As for the fishing, well, it should be nothing short of phenomenal. This sort of storm system does an excellent job at stirring up the waters and, hence, the fish, making them aggressive feeders. The reef and wreck areas will be alive with all the snapper and grouper varieties plus the beginning of our fall visitors – cobia, kingfish, Spanish mackerel, sailfish and more. And, with the abundance of floating debris, weeds and seagrass, expect tons of dolphin (mahi mahi), tuna, wahoo and tripletail. If you’ve been contemplating a fishing trip to the Keys, now is a great time. Our economy needs your tourism dollars, and you can expect to be lavished upon with even greater hospitality than we normally bestow upon our visitors! If you are inclined to make a donation in support of humanitarian efforts in Marathon and the Keys, here is an official, verified list of Florida Keys Charities that really need your help! Please share and donate today. They are all on the ground in the Keys already helping. Lots of options:

While our landline service may be intermittent, please call us on our cell at (305) 942-9214, or email us at SeaSquared@bellsouth.net. Stay tuned to our Facebook page (http://facebook.com/marathonfishing) for updates on the restoration process in Marathon. We look forward to seeing you all very soon!

Fire Fest

Returns to Jonathan Dickinson State Park O

n October 21, 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., the Friends of Jonathan Dickinson State Park are hosting a fun-filled family event - Fire Fest 2017! The Halloween-themed event welcomes the community to learn about the importance of prescribed fire in Florida and focuses on increasing awareness and appreciation of Florida’s unique wildlife and plants, recreational opportunities, and rich natural history. Located just south of Stuart, at 16450 SE Federal Hwy. in Hobe Sound, Jonathan Dickinson State Park teems with wildlife, including threatened and endangered species, and over 15 natural communities.

The Loxahatchee River, Florida’s first federally designated Wild and Scenic River, runs through the park and offers saltwater and freshwater fishing, canoeing, kayaking, paddle-boarding, and swimming in designated areas. With 10,500 acres of land to explore, one can enjoy many more recreational opportunities including hiking, geocaching, camping, in season horse-back riding, and off-road biking on the park’s award-winning trails. The most significant and effective tool used to protect and maintain the park’s natural communities and wildlife habitat is prescribed fire. In the early 1970s, park rangers,

biologists, and park managers recognized that fire is a natural part of Florida’s landscapes. However, wildfire, specifically fire that is started naturally from lightning strikes, is an unacceptable and unsafe way of managing our natural areas, so the Florida Park Service began its prescribed burn program. Many species benefit from prescribed fire, some of which would not survive without it, like the state threatened gopher tortoise and federally endangered Florida scrub-

jay. Our philosophy is to manage the land according to scientifically accepted fire intervals in a given ecosystem, and wildlife and plants thrive in response. A secondary but major benefit of prescribed fire is to the surrounding communities. If we continue to use fire as a management tool, the homes, roads, and people nearby will be much safer. Fire Fest welcomes everyone to view prescribed burning up close and to talk with trained fire crew members. Two fire demonstrations

take place during the event, including one in the afternoon and one in the evening after sunset – something you don’t want to miss. Smokey Bear will be there to support the crew too! There’s much more to Fire Fest than the burn demos too, with hayrides, swamp buggy trail rides, bounce houses, live music, craft beer, exhibitors and arts and crafts, children’s art activities, fire truck and helicopter demonstrations, spooky trail, live animals, marshmallow roasting, and much more! The

event costs $6 for park entry for up to 8 people per vehicle. Hayrides, swamp buggy trail rides, and the bounce house and game area require additional fees; all other activities are free. So, come on out, bring your friends and family, and spend a day the in the park! urricanes are devastating on land, and they can also be deadly to the fish we love to catch. Here’s a quick look at what goes on in the water during a big storm. The upper levels of the ocean are typically arranged by temperature and salinity. Colder, saltier water lies below warmer, fresher water near the surface. A hurricane mixes everything up, resulting in a muddled and more homogeneous upper ocean. The surface water is cooler and saltier than it was previously was, and deeper water is warmer and less salty. In very shallow coastal areas, the large amount of fresh cold rainwater from a hurricane can reduce the temperature and salinity of the near-surface water. Intense hurricanes can generate 60-plus-foot waves. Damaging currents can extend down 300 feet below the surface and are capable of dismantling coral reefs, relocating ship wrecks, breaking oil pipelines and displacing huge volumes of sand on the seabed. Larger marine animals such as sharks seem to be barely affected

by all the uproar. They can detect tiny changes in pressure as larger waves approach, as well as the reduced surface pressure associated with the storm, and they also swim deeper or leave the area. However, hurricanes have been known to result in dead marine life due to reduced amounts of dissolved oxygen in the water, rapid salinity changes and violent surf. Marine life suffers for months to years from the death and destruction following a hurricane. Here are some reasons fish kills follow major storm events: • Freshwater flooding from rain or saline storm surge may trap fish in an inappropriate salinity. If this happens rapidly and the fish have no escape, species intolerant to changes in salinity may die. • Low dissolved oxygen is by far the most common cause of post-storm fish kills. When oxygen levels get too low, fish essentially suffocate. Wind action in small lakes or ponds may push surface waters to one side of the lake. Water from the bottom rises to the surface, bringing with it sediments and organic materials from the bottom. Water from the bottom is low in oxygen, and bottom materials may include hydrogen sulfide. In high concentrations, hydrogen sulfide can be lethal to fish and is responsible for “rotten egg” or “sewage” odors. Bacteria in the sediments are also brought to the surface; these bacteria decompose the organic material from the bottom, using up oxygen in the process. This whole event is termed a “turnover,” since literally, the bottom comes to the top. Long periods of cloudy days can also lower dissolved oxygen levels. In aquatic ecosystems, microscopic organisms and aquatic plants carry out photosynthesis, which uses energy from sunlight to create carbon-based nutrition. Oxygen is a by-product. When there are long periods of cloudy days, these organisms produce less oxygen. Under these conditions, it does not take long before there is little oxygen left for fish. Whether you’re in the market for a luxury cruiser or exploring ways to get on the water, our expanded in-water display will showcase more than 100 best-in-class vessels, ranging in size from 30 to 80 feet.” The three-day show provides activities for anyone interested in the boating lifestyle, from avid anglers to novice boaters, and families to retirees. A new feature is the Boater Pass, which not only helps attendees collect information on their favorite vessels and exhibitors, but also gives them a chance to win a 2018 Yamaha EX Deluxe Waverunner. “The boat show has a wide range of activities to entertain and educate people of all ages and experience levels,” said Murphy. “But, for our fishermen, we’ve gone all out. Want to hook a redfish or learn DIY maintenance? You can’t miss this show.” Attendees can hone their boating skills with on-the-water workshops through the Discover Boating’s Hands-On Skills Training

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT ICEMULE PRO XL Seeing the need for a portable cooler that is actually a real cooler and holds real ice, ICEMULE founder James Collie set out on a mission to change the way the world views coolers. The result is the world’s coldest, most portable and toughest hands-free soft cooler. It can be worn like a backpack. The ICEMULE Pro XL is a high-capacity 33-liter cooler that keeps ice better than many hard coolers. They retain solid ice for more than 24 hours, and the Pro XL is large enough to hold 24 cans and ice. That’s a lot of space to carry provisions for your next adventure comfortably on your back. ICEMULEs are built of the highest-quality materials and fasteners. Their proprietary MuleSkin fabrics are extra tough to stand up to the most punishing conditions. There are no seams; welded construction ensures the Pro XL is completely waterproof. And the cooler’s roll-top, which works like a dry bag, is air-tight and allows easy access without jamming zippers. With padded backpack straps, ventilated back pads and a sternum strap, weight distribution is optimized to comfortably carry a heavy load. Whether it’s a hike into the backcountry or a long walk down to the beach, you’ll be glad your cooler is an ICEMULE.

FRESHWATER

By Jerrod Vila

O

h, the fall. It brings us colorful foliage, football, fresh apple cider and big ornery brown trout. When the mercury begins to take the plunge and daylight starts to dwindle, big mature brown trout start their yearly routine of procreation. What follows is a feeding binge of mature trout. Fish that have been uncatchable all summer throw caution to the wind. This is not the time for small flies and delicate presentations. Big gaudy nymphs and large streamers are the name of the game in fall. Large stonefly patterns like Girdle Bugs and Pat’s Rubber Legs are good choices as are the usual generic mayfly patterns like Hare’s Ears and Pheasant Tails, just opt for

a size 8 instead of an 18. My personal favorite fall flies are streamers, and something with a little bit of color, too. For some reason big fall browns seem to like streamers with a bit of orange in them. Sculpin patterns can be especially deadly this time of year. Whether it be the giant protein-packed snack a big sculpin delivers or a triggered attack response implanted in trout to protect their roe, it should be used to your advantage. It is also the time for stealth. With overly large trout sometimes holding in ridiculously shallow water, being sneaky pays huge dividends. Wear drab colored shirts at the very least. Even a camouflage jacket is not too far fetched. I normally work a river upstream, but this is not the case when fishing fall streamers. I’ll work it down. I can be much quieter and more stealthy when walking with the current as opposed to against it. If possible, stay on the bank as much as you can. Most fish will hit on the swing, so the area you expect the take to come will be downstream of your location. If you were working upstream, you could have already spooked a fish. Cast across, swing it down, take a few sneaky steps down stream, think about it, cast across, swing it down. Walking the river is crucial. Don’t just haphazardly crash through the water on your way to a good run. Hunt the river this time of year. Take a few steps and watch. This is where a good pair of polarized glasses are worth their weight in gold. Look over the entire stream, not just the typical haunts. You may be pleasantly surprised and amazed by what you’ll see. Trout will still be positioned in good usual runs too, but much more apt to attack your offering. Instead of heading to the deer stand or taking up a spot on the couch to watch the big game, get out on the stream. Just maybe, a kyped-up, big old slab of spotted butter will end up in your net. Jerrod Vila is a simple guy from Upstate New York with a passion for fly fishing, cooking and predator hunting. he dry brisk November morning air is a welcome change to Florida’s Forgotten Coast residents, but not just for the obvious reasons. The summer heat has lifted, and the mighty red drum is hungry and looking to fill her belly with whatever kind of crustacean or finny fish she can get close to. As you move stealthily along the marsh, you search for the signs: a wake along the grass line or a tail piercing the water’s surface. Either one is worthy of a cast and, if presented properly,

can result in the silence of the morning stalk being broken by the crash of a topwater plug being engulfed, the scream of a reel’s drag and some enthusiastic expletives. Stalking the skinnies of the marsh can be a challenging experience. Reds spook easily, so stealth is a must, as are accurate and purposeful casts; all this is what makes the hunt so rewarding. The waters of Franklin County are teeming with reds, making the chance of fooling, fighting and releasing a mighty red an extremely attainable and rewarding experience. If you come to this area to chase reds, any shallow-drafting boat will put you in a position for success, but some are better suited than others. Ideally, the ability to pole, paddle or scull your vessel will give you the advantage of stealth, but a trolling motor and a well-planned use of tides and wind also works well on the flats. Franklin County TDC is giving away a free red fishing excursion this month, so enter for your chance to win and make your redfish dream a reality. The reds and so many other fish are abundant in some of the most beautiful places on earth, right here. Don’t let another fall go by without experiencing this amazing time of year along Florida’s Forgotten Coast. For more details or to sign up, go to: www. floridasforgottencoast.com. EXPERT ADVICE

See the Fish

DAVID MANEY, FOWLER’S SUNGLASSES

W

alking a shallow trout stream, casting to structure in lakes or making sure you’re going after the biggest fish in an offshore school you need functional high performance UV sunglasses to see beneath the water. One pair may not fit the function for each of these varied UV demands. Shallow streams with bright sunlight require amber for most people. Deeper murky waters and overcast conditions need grey or amber. For offshore with bright sun and the need to see deeper into the blue waters, your best bet is blue mirror or grey. As an avid angler and someone who’s been involved in the sunglasses industry for over 20 years, my advice is to always try to match the sunglasses to the condition. This requires keeping several different UV’s with you. Most sunglass cases come with clip-on attachments so keeping a few pair of sunglasses with you has never been easier. As the conditions change during your day, you’ll be prepared to match your UV formula with the change. Once you’ve prepared yourself for these UV changes you’ll be on top of your angling game no matter what.

For the best overall coverage in any condition I recommend one pair of blue mirror/grey and one pair of green mirror/ amber. This simple modification in your sight fishing tactics will make a huge difference in your angling success. Tight Lines, David Maney Fowler’s Pharmacy 888-340-9021 www.FowlersSunglasses.com

FLY FISHING

D

uring the fall and winter, there is not a better saltwater game fish to target with a fly rod than redfish. Plentiful throughout the Gulf States, the redfish provides a great fly fishing opportunity for anglers of all skill levels who want to sight fish in shallow clear water. I’ve always considered the redfish to be the perfect saltwater game fish. It offers the angler a perfect venue to hone his or her sightfishing skills. Why? Because of two important factors: accessibility and plentiful fishing opportunity. From a logistical standpoint, most anglers can book a flight for great redfish destinations from most major cities in the U.S. Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and the panhandle of Florida are prime winter redfish spots. Each of these locations has experienced fly fishing guides who are knowledgeable and professional. Access to the marsh flats, where the redfish live in the winter, is quite easy and the number of redfish you see in a day can be mind blowing! Three factors for successful sight fishing to Redfish: 1) Can you see the fish? Visibility is the most important factor when sight fishing in shallow water. It’s great when you have a bluebird day and you’re seeing the fish from 100 yards away. However, Mother Nature usually has her own ideas on conditions. So, being able to identify fish even in tough lighting is important. Look for odd shapes in the water, V shaped wakes or even a subtle dimple that breaks the water’s surface. These are all signs of redfish feeding in an area. TIP: Use yellow polarized lenses. These will provide better contrast under tough lighting conditions. 2. Can I make a short cast? Many redfish are hooked 20 feet or less from the boat. Believe

me, the short cast is the toughest cast to make when sight fishing to redfish. Why? Because we are so focused on perfecting the 60-foot cast and neglect the importance of dropping a cast less than 20 feet from the boat. The 60foot cast is important, but it rarely comes into play when sight fishing to redfish. Work on your short cast as well. TIP: Work on a flip cast. Only cast the head of your fly line at targets on your left and right sides at 10 to 20 feet max. 3) Where should I place the fly? Redfish can see very well. I’ve seen them chase a fly from 20 feet way. However, I find placing a fly a couple feet in front of their noses works best. Once you’ve made the cast, let the fly settle to the bottom. As the redfish moves toward the fly, begin to move the fly with short strips. Once the redfish sees the fly, it will swim over and inhale it. At this point all you have to do is keep the rod tip on the water and strip strike to set the hook. TIP: On an open lawn, place small Frisbees at 5, 10, 20 and 30 feet from your casting position. Work on placing the fly in the center of each Frisbee without a false cast.
