E
very blade-handy angler has their own techniques and tricks for peeling the perfect fillet off a fish. But anyone who has spent enough time around a cutting board knows the perfect way to fillet is a combination of three crucial elements: technique, tools and practice. Whether it’s a 15-pound red snapper or a 6-ounce bream, the basics of filleting a fish are the same. The idea is to remove the meat along the fish’s flanks, while leaving behind the head, bones and guts. Step 1: Make a vertical cut just behind the fish’s gill plate and pectoral fin. This cut should go all the way down to the bone and
extend from back to belly. Step 2: Run the blade from the first cut all the way down the top of the fish, along the backbone to the tail, making a shallow incision as close to the backbone as you can get it. Step 3: Using that long cut along the backbone, utilize smooth, light strokes to work the fillet away from the bones moving from the back to the belly. The other hand can be used to peel back the meat as you go. Cut around the ribcage when you arrive at it. Step 4: With step 3 completed, you should have a beautiful skinon fillet. To remove the skin, place the fillet on the board skin side down. Start from the tail and insert the knife through the meat down to the skin, leaving a tab of meat and skin at the tail to hold onto. Turn the knife horizontal and run the blade up the skin to remove the meat. Step 5: Use tweezers to pick out any pin bones left in the fillet. The technique seems simple enough, but if you don’t have good, sharp, flexible knives that are sized correctly for the fish on the board, you’re going to make a mess out of your fillets. American-Made Innovation At
B&W Trailer Hitches S ince 1987, B&W Trailer Hitches has been using quality and innovation to build one of the most trustworthy names in the industry. Roger Baker was experiencing declining demand for his skills as a classic-car restorer, and Joe Works had endured several tough years on the family farm. They quickly recognized a way to remove the inconvenience of a gooseneck ball permanently welded in the bed of a truck. veryone who goes out on the water wants to have a good time and come home safely. No matter what boating activity you take part in, there is something freeing about that feeling of the wind in your face, the gentle rocking of the hull and the sound of the waves. Unlike cars, there are no yellow lines to stay between; you can go anywhere you want. But just like in a car, there are some rules you must follow. The Navigation Rules and Regulations Handbook, published by the U.S. Coast Guard, includes the U.S. Inland Navigation Rules or NAVRULES and the international rules known as the COLREGS. These rules were developed for the purpose of avoiding collisions and keeping boaters safe. Every boat owner should have a copy and spend some time understanding them. It is mandatory to have a copy onboard any vessel over 39.4 feet in length. Taking a class on the rules can also be extremely helpful. To break it down, the rules tell you what to do when you come across another vessel. In this case, the term “vessel” is used to classify almost anything that floats on water that can be used for transportation. That means there is a rule that applies to almost every situation involving everything from a kayak to a seaplane. They cover steering regulations as well as sound signaling equipment and navigation lights. As a responsible boater, you should not only be familiar with the basics of how the regulations apply to the specific situations for where you are fishing but should try to know and understand all the requirements. If you regularly go fishing on a small lake or kayak fishing in a river, it is probably rare for you to come into contact with commercial vessels, but you still should know how to handle those situations. Also, just because you are fishing, does not mean you are always a “stand-on”
vessel like a commercial fishing vessel using nets or longlines. Knowing the different rules that apply to all of these situations can mean the difference between a good day on the water and tragedy. At a minimum, you should always have a proper lookout, operate at a safe speed and yield or give-way to another vessel when in doubt and to always avoid a collision, even if that means breaking a navigation rule to save lives and avoid damaging property. Don’t leave the dock without knowing the rules of the road. The United States Power Squadrons–America’s Boating Club offers a seminar that simplifies the sometimes complex COLREGS for the recreational boater. Through examples, you’ll discover how to avoid collisions in various situations, the differences between power and sailboat rules, and the special rules for fishing vessels. This seminar includes student notes with slides. The downloadable U.S. Coast Guard’s Navigation Rules and Regulations Handbook is the supporting text. ith bay scallop seasons in full swing for all but the two smallest harvest regions, the state of Florida is encouraging scallopers to stay safe and to use their mandatory dive flags. A divers-down flag displayed on a boat must be at least 20 inches by 24 inches and displayed at the highest point where it can be observed from 360 degrees. A divers-down flag or buoy, displayed from the water, must be at least 12 inches by 12 inches. A flag must have a wire or other stiffener to hold it open, and a buoy may be three- or four-sided. All divers must prominently display a divers-down device. All vessels must make reasonable effort to stay at least 100 feet away from a divers-down device within a river, inlet or channel. In open waters, vessels must make reasonable effort to stay 300 feet away. For safety, divers should stay within those same distances of their displayed device. A vessel that approaches closer must be fully off plane and at idle speed. Scalloping season is opened July 1 for the waters off Franklin, Wakulla and northwestern Taylor counties as well as Levy, Citrus and Hernando counties. It will remain open through Sept. 24 in these zones. Harvest is also open for the rest of Taylor County and all of Dixie County, where it will remain open through Sept. 10. In Gulf County, including St. Joseph Bay, scalloping season will open Aug. 17 and continue through Sept. 30. Pasco County will open July 2029. n May 9, Chasen’Tailz hosted “Canvas and Cocktails,” featuring world-renowned artist Carey Chen. Carey is well known throughout the marine community for his love of the ocean and marine life, as illustrated through his incredible artwork. What some may not know is that Carey has been a supporter of the Chasen’Tailz KDW Fishing Tournament since day one. He has donated his time and artwork for every tournament and has, once again, stepped up to the plate to assist with this incredible event. Carey showed his dedication to the local community by leading the night’s events. Thirty-five guests spent the evening painting a blue marlin under Carey’s direction. Attendees enjoyed a spread of food donated by Bravo, at Harbourside Place, which will once again be the host location for this year’s tournament on Sept. 8. Guests enjoyed wine from Salute Market in Palm Beach Gardens and, as always, Tito’s vodka. Whole Foods, in West Palm Beach, was another great supporter of the event and provided a delectable spread of cheeses and MidCi provided salads and charcuterie. Without a doubt, this was another exciting and funfilled evening adding to the Chasen’Tailz series of events. The Chasen’Tailz KDW Fishing Tournament was founded by Summer and Jay Warren in memory of their son Chase, who passed away from the complications of Type 2 Gaucher Disease. This year, Chasen’Tailz is donating proceeds to families with children with life-threatening illnesses. It is their current and future mission to improve the lives of sick children. Jay and Summer were determined to create a legacy in memory of Chase to spread awareness about rare childhood diseases and assist families in need. Since its beginning, the tournament has grown to include a multitude of events during the tournament weekend and events, such as “Canvas and Cocktails,” throughout the year. According to Assistant Tournament Director Heather Oblaczynski, “The continued support of businesses and individuals such as Carey Chen are the backbone of the tournament. This event was a ton of fun for all who participated. The support of all the businesses made it happen and we couldn’t be more thankful. fter a pursuit lasting more than a decade, Team Reel Addiction finally topped the field of 117 boats to win the 2018 Mississippi Gulf Coast Billfish Classic June 4-10. Angler Chase Pate, of Pensacola, Fla., Capt. Scooter Porto, owners Rocky and Laurie Jones, and mates Zach Taylor, Seth Brennan and Nate Dennis boated a 796.9-pound blue marlin after a 30-minute fight Saturday, June 9. The largest marlin of the week earned the team $405,705 for the top tournament award and optional entries. The overall tournament prize money was nearly $2.2 million. “Winning this one was on my bucket list,” Rocky Jones explained. “We won top release boat 12 years ago, and I’ve been trying to win the whole shooting match ever since. We finally did it!” Reel Addiction, a 56 Viking and a regular on the Gulf big-game circuit, is based in Pensacola Beach. With the win, the team also earned an invitation to the 2019 Offshore World Championship in Quepos, Costa Rica.
Team Supreme, with anglers Alex Krake, Chris Howell and Capt. Chase Lake, didn’t go home empty-handed, even though their Friday night marlin weighed 739.1 pounds. The 76 Viking from Destin went back out and caught a 156.6-pound yellowfin to boost the overall winnings to $313,115 for the second-place tournament award and optionals. Pearl took the third-place tournament award and pocketed $122,970. Angler Edgar McKee and Capt. Shawnie Clemons and the team aboard the 48 Viking based in Orange Beach boated a 611.5-pound blue to earn that payout. The Catch and Release Division was close and final standings were determined by time of catch. Relentless Pursuit was the overall winner with 1,800 points (three blue releases), earning a check of $265,050. Done Deal came in second in the division, also with 1,800 points. Money Shot was the third-place release team with 1,200 points, good for a $12,000 payday. Angler Robeau Whibbs and the team aboard Swee Pea, a 50 Topaz from Pensacola, captured the top tuna. Their yellowfin weighed 182.3 pounds, good for $24,000. Anthony Stauffer (Hayride) boated the largest swordfish, a 144.1 broadbill, good for $39,600. Johnny Moore, fishing aboard Alma-Ann, a 48 Cabo (Capt. Nick Jones), made MGCBC tournament history when he finally landed the new record dolphin after a two-hour waiting game. The 57.2-pound bull earned the team $66,750. The wahoo this year didn’t quite meet normal Classic averages but were respectable fish nonetheless and earned nice payouts. Lined Out and Jeff Dees caught the largest, 61.4 pounds, good for $48,300. Seament’s Doug Lake was second with a 48.5 wahoo ($37,125) and Neal Foster, betting heavily on Team Intensity, took home $82,425 for three entries in the optional categories. The Golden Nugget Casino and Hotel was this year’s tournament host. High Roller sponsors included the City of Biloxi, Release Marine, Visit Mississippi Gulf Coast, Gorenflo’s Tackle and Marina Store and Yeti Coolers. Next year’s tournament is slated for June 3-9. lex Hensley, of Fort Walton Beach, caught a 22-inch STAR-tagged redfish on June 12 near Rocky Creek in Okaloosa County. He is now the new owner of a Pathfinder 2200TRS with a Yamaha 150, Humminbird Solix electronics and a Minn Kota Terova trolling motor. This awesome prize package was the first of the major prizes to be awarded in CCA-Florida’s signature event for 2018. The statewide fishing contest kicked-off May 26 and will run through Sept. 3. CCA Florida STAR, presented by Yamaha, is the largest family friendly saltwater fishing competition in Florida. T
he 25th Annual Sebastian Exchange Club Foundation’s Blue Water Open Charity Offshore Fishing Tournament was held June 2, with tournament headquarters at Capt. Hiram’s Resort in Sebastian. The event raised an incredible $70,000 for charity. Anglers and organizers caught a beautiful weekend amid all the rain and wind of the past month or two. The silver anniversary tournament registered 145 boats, although only 38 boats weighed in fish. It was reported as a slow day of fishing for east-central Florida. The event included dolphin, kingfish, wahoo and grouper on the main board and bonus board, with additional payouts in each position to celebrate the tournament’s silver anniversary. The total purse was a guaranteed $19,000, which included $1,000 each for the biggest amberjack and cobia caught, as well as $2,500 for Top Boat. The catch was dominated by dolphin and kingfish. However, the biggest dolphin, caught on Skeleton Crew, was only 23.55 pounds. Rounding out the dolphin board, second place went to Down Time with a 22.65-pounder; Wide Open took third with an 18.35; and fourth place went to team Shootout with a 15.65-pound dolphin. The kingfish catches were larger, but still smaller than the norm. The first-place king weighed in at 36.45 pounds, followed by a 27.80 for second place, 26.80 in third and 25.9 in fourth place. Top Grouper was a whopping 57.85-pounder caught on III Jiggers, captained by Todd Thompson. Second place grouper was 37.80, and third place was 15.35. These were the only grouper that met the 10-pound min-
imum at the event. Only two wahoo were weighed in, but the first-place fish was a nice 51.15-pounder caught aboard Reely, captained by Mark Headley. Second place weighed 15.20 pounds. Top Boat went to Easy Drinkin’, captained by Joel McKenney. The Top Boat award is based on an aggregate weight of three fish in at least two of the main-board fish categories. Although Easy Drinkin’s only board fish was the second-place kingfish, at 27.80 pounds, they also weighed in another king at 23.35 pounds and a dolphin at 12.4 pounds, for a total weight of 63.55 pounds. The $1,000 amberjack award went to Ken Keaton aboard Salty Cracker with a 45.40 pounder. No cobia made the weight minimum for the tournament. The Exchange Club of Sebastian has raised almost $600,000 over the years through the efforts put forth in the Blue Water Open. o Bananas! I’ve always told my clients to never bring my worst enemy on the water... the banana. It may sound crazy, but this amazing fruit has caused more hassle than anything else on my boat. Call it superstition, call it bad luck, but I hate them on my boat. I won’t even eat one before I go on the boat. I’m sure many of you have heard about the banana myth. Here are a couple explanations of how the fear of bananas on boats got started.
I’ll start with the spider myth. Back in the 1700s, when shiploads of bananas were being brought over from Africa, they were loaded with small spiders. Spiders become most active at night. So, imagine sailors are carrying the banana cargo in their hold. When they go to bed for the evening, they get bitten by poisonous African spiders. No one can figure out why the crew is dying. When they finally arrive in their destination port with a big chunk of their crew dead, you can see just how easy a rumor could spread that bananas were bad luck on board. Second, back in the 1700s, all boats were made of wood. It was said that some banana-rich areas of Africa and the Caribbean had some of the most destructive wood-eating termites in the world. So, you can imagine that sometimes these termites would cling to the banana trees as they were dragged across the land to the docks where they were loaded on the ship. When the termites realized they were in a wooden ship, it was madness. Needless to say, the termites went to town on the wooden ship, causing tons of damage and in some cases eating holes in the hull that were not repairable. Third, is my experience. When clients have brought this vicious fruit on board, I’ve had several rods and reels damaged. I once ran aground on an oyster bed that I’ve driven around my whole life. I once had a client Goliath grouper fishing, waiting for a bite, when all of sudden his buddy whips out a banana. I immediately yanked it from his hand and tossed it off my boat. Within seconds after tossing the banana off the vessel, we hooked up and landed a 300-pound Goliath. So, that’s why I HATE BANANAS, but only on my boat or any time I go fishing. You can take your risk with the banana myth, but I’m going to play it safe. If we’ve learned anything from history, it’s that bananas and boats don’t mix. Follow Capt. A
s a fisherman in Florida, I’ve long been interested in fish-related subjects like the language of fishing, fishing and cussing, place names from fish, and how painters depict fishermen. One famous painter who did some of his best work in Florida was Winslow Homer (1836 – 1910). His painting entitled “The Herring Net” has much to tell us about the hard life of fishermen and the unglamorous part of providing fish for our plates. The self-taught American painter spent many winters in our state and painted some well-known watercolors about the sea and fishermen and favorite fishing spots, although this particular “cold” scene is probably far away from our warm shores. Homer’s favorite fishing spots in the state and ones that inspired him to paint were Enterprise on the St. Johns River, Homosassa, Jacksonville, Key West and Tampa. He described Homosassa in a letter to his brother in glowing terms: “Delightful climate here about as cool as our September—fishing the best in America as far as I can find.” The Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park has a permanent exhibit about Homer’s watercolors of the river there. The copyright-free reproduction here of Homer’s “The Herring Net” shows the back-breaking toil of fishermen catching herring from a small dory. The one fisherman hauls in netted fish while the younger one unloads the catch. The two have to work together to make it a productive day and also to keep the small boat steady in the ocean waves. We can’t see the faces of the fishermen, suggesting that they represent many anonymous toilers in the sea, maybe mankind in general. The isolation of the fishermen in the midst of a hostile sea points out how hard a fisherman’s life can be, one that relies on weather and fish runs and much patience. Notice how the young fisherman’s body leans over the side of the boat to counterbalance the weight of the many

fish being pulled over the side in a net. The large sailing vessels in the distance may be where the two fishermen have come from in their dory and where they will return. We know that the herring, sometimes called Atlantic Thread Herring, are in Florida’s coastal waters. Large dip nets can scoop up many of the herring either out in the depths of the ocean or in shallow streams near the coast. Many fishermen use the herring as a baitfish for catching other species, even lobsters. Aficionados like smoked herring. I like such paintings that show different sides of fishing, in this case how long and arduous a life it can be to provide delicacies for a public that might not always appreciate how hard a life some fishermen live. Leaving Fish To Find Fish MARK SOSIN
M
ost of us are seldom satisfied. Picture those days when you are in the right spot and fishing is really good. Suddenly, an almost irresistible urge tries to force you to search for an even better area. Who among us at one time or another has not abandoned fast action with smaller fish to search for even larger quarry or a different species. We quickly convince ourselves that if we fail to find better sport, we can always come back to what we are presently enjoying. It doesn’t work that way. Repeated failures and frustrations over the years have taught veteran anglers that it can be a losing gamble to leave fish in the hope of finding larger critters or even faster action. Conditions on the water can change so rapidly that the good thing you had going for you has long since stopped before get back. Keep in mind that fish feed for a limited time and then they spend hours digesting their food. And, the colder the water, the longer digestion takes. Fish are unpredictable. Anyone who puts in time on the water learns that there is no clear-cut method of determining when fish will feed and when they will stop. Even in a chum slick, where anglers are ladling food into the water and tossing handfuls of goodies behind the boat to keep fish in a feeding mood, the action varies. At times, the fishing can be impressive, but it can also slow down without warning. Rules have exceptions and this one does, too. Every fisherman can point to the times when he violated this basic rule and found even better fishing. And, there are instances when an angler returns to the area of the initial action and it is still going on. It does happen, but the odds are strongly against it. Inshore fishing in saltwater frequently depends on a particular stage of the tide or force of the current. To take advantage of different areas at the peak time, you often have to leave one spot while the action is still in progress. Veteran guides, for example,

work a pattern tailored to tidal stages. They know the best fishing in a place occurs when the water is just the right depth or the current is flowing at the proper force. Some of these experts rely more on a clock than any other tool, and they time their arrival at each spot to coincide with optimum conditions. I have fished with guides who work a pattern with great success, and they have no problem leaving fish to find fish based on the stage of the tide. There are also times when that doesn’t work for some unknown reason. I can think of a case in point when I fished a shallow flat loaded with fish. I could hardly wait for the next morning. On the exact same stage of the tide the next day, with the weather absolutely the same, there wasn’t a single fish on that flat. The important thing to remember is that changing spots when the fish are feeding can be a major decision. Too many anglers fall into the trap of thinking they can return if they fail elsewhere and the fish in the first spot will still be feeding. That’s why experienced fishermen seldom leave fish to find fish.

Hide And Seek With World Record Stripers By Tom Schlichter
I
t’s no secret really big stripers patrol the eastern end of Long Island Sound. Just ask Greg Myerson; he found the biggest one in August of 2012 – the IGFA world record, which weighed 81 pounds 14 ounces! Lucky catch? Hardly. Myerson, 50, of Wallingford, Connecticut, has targeted big bass in these waters since childhood. Over last decade he’s hauled in numerous 50- and 60-pounders, plus a 73-pound behemoth, in addition to the top prize. “I’ve released some others,” he said, “that might have broken my own record.” What draws such big fish into the area? Myerson believes it’s a search for lobster. “The eastern end of Long Island Sound is very rocky and, until recently, it held a ton of lobsters,” he said. “Big bass are lazy. They don’t like
fighting strong currents, so they slip in behind submerged boulders or hold in the lee of outcroppings and reefs. That’s where lobsters like to feed, too, so it’s a convenient ambush spot for the bass.” Myerson noted there is plenty of good bottom to investigate here. “Southwest Ledge and Southwest Reef make good starting points,” he stated, “but there are other obvious opportunities if you poke around.” Once he finds a spot, the current striper king follows a specific routine. He’ll chart a path that avoids lobster pots but still allows access to the lee side of submerged boulders. He’ll fish when the tide is flowing slowly and prefers to ply his trade after dark, just past slack high water, and on the last quarter of the moon. “Lobster feed best from 0 to 1.4 knots of current,” he explained, “so that’s when the biggest bass chew, too.” Myerson’s secret weapon is a special sinker he’s developed and now markets through his business, World Record Striper Company (worldrecordstripercompany.com). Called a Rattlesinker, it rattles at the same 10-decibel sound level lobsters use to send out a buzzing underwater warning when danger enters the area. When bass hear the rattle, they start looking for food. Myerson uses a clip to attach the sinker to a three-way swivel and a 5-foot length of fluorocarbon leader that terminates in 5/0 eel hook to present an eel. Using conventional tackle and a braided main line, he bounces the sinker across the bottom as the eel follows behind. The rattling sound and sea snake have proven to be a lethal combination cow bass just can’t resist. yle Chandler wanted to keep fishing. That was his vote. But after a 56.4-pound bull dolphin landed on the deck of Unreel, his Mercurypowered Fort Pierce-built 27-foot Ameracat, Chandler was outvoted 3-1. It was only a few minutes after noon, and the scales at Causeway Cove didn't open until 3 p.m. Angler Stephanie Langel had just battled the raging bull for 45 minutes until husband Phil Langel could gaff it and haul it over the gunwale. Erin Chandler had just reeled in a smaller fish — a cow, or female, dolphin — and the whole crew was celebrating. They knew the big dolphin was big. But was it big enough to win $10,000 — the top prize in the 22nd annual Fishing Frenzy tournament presented by Geico Treasure Coast and the St. Lucie Chamber of Commerce? Chandler, of White City, said he and his wife had never entered a fishing tournament before. Erin, a breast cancer survivor, had not been on the boat in a long while, and one day while talking to their neighbors — the Langels — they all decided it would be fun to enter the Frenzy. They waited until the week of the tournament to enter, keeping an eye on weather forecasts for Saturday. "We took along some doublerigged ballyhoo," Chandler
explained. "I was checking some apps to see where the offshore temperature breaks were and found some that looked good down off St. Lucie Inlet. So that's where we headed after checkout at Fort Pierce Inlet." There were 131 boats entered in this year's Frenzy, Terissa Aronson said. The tournament paid out $10,000 to first place, $3,000 to second, $2,000 to third and $1,000 to fourth for heaviest dolphin, a fish better known on seafood restaurant menus as "mahi mahi." "In 10 minutes, we got a little schoolie and I thought that was a good sign," he said. "Then, for the next 2-3 hours it was nothing but weeds and bonitos." Chandler trolled north along current edges and temperature breaks waiting for that one knockdown. The wives chose to take naps on the boat's bean bag chairs until something exciting happened. Then, at about 11:15 a.m., in 150200 feet of water northeast of Fort Pierce Inlet, they had two rods go off. "My wife grabbed the one rod and began fighting her fish on the one side, but Stephanie was the only one who saw the other fish bite," Chandler said. "She said it was a big fish." But no one knew for sure. What

FWC Two-Day Mini Lobster Season Set for July 25-26 One of Florida’s coastal traditions occurs every July when the official mini-lobster season kicks off. Coastal areas are flooded with “bug-hunters” trying to find their share of these tasty crustaceans. Keep in mind, there are two Florida lobster seasons, the two-day mini season and the eightmonth regular lobster season. The mini lobster season is always the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday
in July. This year the mini season falls on July 25th and 26th. The regular eight-month lobster season opens August 6 and runs through March 31. Spiny lobster must have a minimum carapace length of at least three-inches and must be measured in the water. The carapace is measured from the forward edge (between the rostral horns) to the rear edge of the carapace, and all harvesters must have

Lobster harvesting during either season requires a resident or nonresident saltwater fishing license and a special lobster permit, unless you are exempt. W
elcome to Martin County, where July’s fireworks run all month long with a grand finale consisting of blasts, explosions and eruptions annihilating schools of pilchards, and glass minnows along the beaches followed by early signs of the mullet run towards the end. Calm seas and the opportunity to target tarpon to tuna, and everything on either side, makes July a prime month to hit the water. Massive schools of the silver king can be seen rolling along the beaches as they make their way up coast on their annual migration. These fish will respond to everything from live baits to flies but there are times you may need to switch it up a little to get bites
consistently. Mullet, crabs, shrimp, pilchards, greenies and sardines make great live baits for tarpon, while D.O.A. Root Beer Terror Eyes, and Glow Shrimp have been long time favorites of mine. The last few years I’ve been throwing RonZ eel imitations at them when they get in deeper water with great success too. Having a small tower like the one I have aboard Off The Chain is a huge asset while following these fish up the beach, but lately, even a greater advantage is the side scan sonar. Capt Mike Holliday, using his Humminbird SOLIX, has been able to stay with these fish even as they move through the dirty water being dumped out of our inlet from Lake Okeechobee. These sonar units are nothing short of amazing and are literal fish finders. They actually give you marks so accurate that you can see the shadow of the fish on your screen and probably even be able to identify it. I already have mine ordered! The calmer seas of summer makes it a great time to run offshore and look for swordfish and tuna. Daytime swordfishing has really taken off over the last 10 or 12 years, and I must admit, the more I do it, the more I like it. Squid, eels, ladyfish and
When we first started, we used electric reels, but lately we’ve started catching them on conventional tackle. Keep in mind, even on the electrics we have some amazing battles lasting close to four hours, so if you’re going to tangle with one of these things via hand crank, you better eat your Wheaties! A bonus to these trips is that you cover so much water on the way out and in, there is a good chance of coming across something floating and holding mahi, wahoo, or something. These calmer months also allow us to fish a couple of live baits while we are swording, giving us chances at dolphin, sailfish, tuna and the occasional marlin, so you’re not just staring at one or two rod tips all day long. A
s the heat turns on in July, so does the fishing! This time of year is great for fishing the coastline for big jacks, snook, and tarpon with nice calm seas. First of all, let’s find some bait! Live pilchards can be caught castnetting along the beach in the clear water three to ten miles north of the
inlet. Simply look for diving birds. Casting sabiki rigs can be easier at the Sandpile and Bullshark Barge to catch greenies and sardines. Once we get bait, it’s time to find some fish. One great method is slow-trolling those baitfish outside the inlet. Try a 1-ounce weighted fish-finder rig with 7-feet of 50-pound leader. The tarpon are currently all over the Keys, and should be showing up here in July, around four to seven a.m. at the inlet and crossroads. Big silver mullet are the best baits for the silver kings rigged without weights. One good method is a butterfly cut mullet 12-inch rigged with a 6/0 hook through the nose. Freeline it down current at the inlet or under the bridges keeping just slight tension to feel the bite. After it drifts 100-to-200 feet back, reel it back up current medium slow for a possible retrieve bite.
The inshore bite has been tough with the runoff water caused by endless rainfall this spring. The best bite inshore has been in the Indian River, not the St. Lucie River with its runoff. Some trout and redfish can be caught along the flats casting “Giles Jigs” and 3/8-ounce D.O.A. C.A.L. jigs in chartreuse and white. Despite the freshwater runoff, some juvenile tarpon always show up in July at Lighthouse Point and the Roosevelt Bridge. Early morning, throwing D.O.A. Terror Eyz at the tarpon rolling at Lighthouse Point can pay off. Rootbeer and Clear Holographic are my favorite colors for them. Early morning or evening with incoming tide can get the tarpon feeding at the smaller Roosevelt car bridge. YoZuri crank baits work well. Keep on the lookout for the upwellings that push the bottom bite closer in along the wrecks and

appear in our offshore zone. Bottom fishing strategies will complement the surface action, as anglers switch gears and deploy bottom baits around reef sites in depths of 60 to 180 feet of water. Bottom fishermen will be swinging on many flavors of grouper and snapper, which will inhabit common ground structures along the offshore playing field. Gag, black, and red grouper will frequently find themselves on fish box ice, right alongside mutton, mangrove, and vermilion snapper. While anglers are swinging on "salty groceries", summer weather patterns will also be in full swing. These patterns will be dominated by late morning and afternoon thunderstorms. Anglers must continue to keep a wary eye to the sky and keep abreast of daily local forecasts to maximize safe fishing strategies. Fishing crews should start their days early in the morning and get the fishing job done quick during the toasty summer days of July.

move across the flats and look for any activity that might be a school of reds. Gold spoons, soft baits, like D.O.A. shrimp or C.A.L. jerk baits will work best for them. Search along the docks during the day for snook or redfish hanging around there as well. It’s a fantastic month to be fishing! Bridges will be producing snapper, drum and sheepshead during July. Live or dead shrimp will be hard for them to resist. Watch the tides and fish the slower sides of them for best results. Whiting will continue to be in
Mark your calendar (7/27) for the late July full moon and head out for some snapper action. The timing coincides with the hatching of sea turtles which increases the bite of big, hungry fish. Expect to see quantity and quality catches of snapper. The reefs will be harboring various schools of snappers. Look for bottom structures, artificial and natural reefs and cast your line, if no bite, move to the next one. Prepare a pitch rod and bait for other reef and pelagic species, primarily mahi and cobia, which will be feeding around the reefs as well. Night time fishing offers booming catches and a cool break

the surf with the occasional bluefish and Spanish mackerel. There will be larger snapper in the river around structure and along channel edges. Sharks will be patrolling along the beach also. The glass minnows will be flowing into the river in huge schools. Watch for these bait schools and fish the edges for your best action. Areas to fish in the river for July: Bear Point, Queen's Cove and Round Island. South of Harbor Branch will be a great area to work for trout in the mornings before the sun heats up things. The flats in front of the power plant taper off to three-to-five-feet and will be holding trout during the day. Live pigfish are the favorite food for trout this time of year. It’s time to set the traps to feed these hungry fish! Try a D.O.A. TerrorEyz or the D.O.A. PT-7 during the day also for trout. The west shore down there will be good areas to search out redfish. Channel edges will be yielding snapper on structure. Tripletail will be around channel markers and pilings to the south towards Jensen Beach. Have a fun month out there! Remember, as always, fishing is not just another hobby—it’s an ADVENTURE!

Live-bait is always a great way to increase your bite and, day or night, will make for increased catches of big fish. he inshore fishing in July should be about as good as it gets for trout. A lot of big gator trout should be caught at first light and again just before dark on top water baits like a Zara Spook, Top Dogs or a MirrOdine at places like the Mooring's Flats, Round Island or Bear Point. During the midmorning and afternoon try a live pilchard or a pigfish and fish it under a popping cork with 24-inches of

20-pound fluorocarbon leader and a 5/0 Kahle hook. Try the area around Torpy Road, Midway Road or at Jack Island. The redfish bite should also be good for anglers using a live shrimp or small crabs. Fish around the mangroves and the islands to the north of the North Bridge. Again, use a 20-pound fluorocarbon leader and a #2 live bait hook. Snook season is closed, but you can look for some good catch and release action around the docks of both north and south Indian River Drive. Try throwing a live bait like a pinfish, pigfish, pilchard or a mullet under the docks. For this I like a 40-pound fluorocarbon leader, a 5/0 live bait hook and a medium action rod— something with a little back bone in it. Look for the tarpon action to be
good during the low light hours. Hot spots should be Big Mud Creek, Fort Pierce Inlet, the turning basin and on the beaches. A good size mullet will be hard to beat. I use the same tackle as for the snook but sometimes it is not enough. Tripletail should be around the channel markers and taking live shrimp fished on a ¼-ounce TrollRite hook with 18 to 24 inches of 20-pound fluorocarbon leader. And, last but not least, look for some good snapper action along the channel edges and around the area bridges. A small white bait or a live shrimp would be my choice and try using a ½-ounce lead, 18-inches of fluorocarbon leader and a #2 long shank hook. The time around the full moon will be the best. FYI - the regulations for tripletail and sheepshead go into effect on July 1.

W
hile trolling for pelagic fish will still be producing, it is cobia time! This is the time of year that we could see cold-water upwellings, which will push cold water from the deeper depths closer to shore. With these upwellings, the cobia will move into shallower waters and all the way onto the beaches. Cobia are a great fighting fish and are great to eat as well. One of the ways to find these fish is to look for structure or reefs in the areas of the cooler water temperatures and then start sight fishing. If the water is clean and clear, have someone with polarized sunglasses stand at the highest safe spot on the boat looking for these fish swimming on the surface. Also watch for sharks or rays, cobia will more than likely be following them or under them. If any of these are seen, cast a bigger jig or a weighted grub in their direction to try to entice any cobia that might be around to eat. If there is a cobia that looks at your jig but won’t eat, have a frisky live bait or a piece of squid to pitch to him and it should be game on. If you haven’t been able to sight fish any cobia around structure, it is always a good idea to try slow trolling or drifting live baits around structure. You can also sight fish cobia the same

way off the beaches in as close as 10to-15 feet depths. It is best to use a longer fishing rod when sight fishing cobia for making longer casts. Please be familiar with the size limit of cobia—33-inches to the fork of the tail. Always net a smaller fish if legal size is questionable for immediate release. Remember, these are a strong fish and will cause damage if they get away from you. So, if you know the fish is legal, have the fishbox ready to receive the fish and close the lid quickly. When there is not a cold-water upwelling, the snapper bite should be good. Mutton and mangrove snapper are the big rod benders. These fish will be directly on the bottom around the reefs and structure. These fish will eat most live or dead bait offerings. A good choice will be to drop a live sardine or pilchard to the bottom on one rig and dead bait such as squid, a ballyhoo chunk
or a plugged sardine on another rig to see what they prefer. When the bite stops on the bait you are using, switch to a different kind of bait, either dead, cut or live. Another way to catch these fish is by vertical or butterfly jigging.

To effectively do this, and have the best results, you will want a rod with a heavy backbone and a light tip. You can either use a spinning or conventional set-up; whichever you prefer. Spool it with 20-to-30-pound braid for best results. Braid has no stretch and you will feel more hits than with mono-line. Be sure to know the legal-size requirements and limits as it varies between snapper species. Also, be sure to vent the fish if you are fishing in deeper waters before releasing any non-keepers. Keep in mind while fishing, if you see any mats of sargassum weed, slowly make your way over to them. With pitch rods ready, cast some live bait toward the edge of the mats and see what comes out. If the mats are in a line along a rip, set out your live baits and slow troll along the edges of the mat. This time of year, you could catch mahi, triple tail or any number of other species. Be safe and watch the sky for afternoon storms while on the water.

he calm and stable conditions that are the norm for July in the Sebastian Area give small boat anglers the freedom to roam both the inshore and nearshore waters at will. Timing is important if you want to fish a specific fishery or put together an all-day game plan with a good chance of staying on fish. The available summertime species include tarpon, snook, redfish, seatrout, sharks, bonito, king mackerel and jack crevalle. You can have an opportunity at them all if you have all day to fish, or just fish the right hour or two for the species you are after. Here’s how:
TARPON
1) If you get on either fork of the Sebastian River before dawn and

uly is a great month to take advantage of flat seas out of Sebastian, but the fishing can be tricky. Water temps this month can range from hot to freezing cold. The key is to adapt your fishing to match the conditions. The tricky part comes into play when the cold-water upwelling occurs. Each summer we get cold water that pushes in from the deep ocean. It comes in under the warm surface water and varies in temperature, depth and timing. Bottom fish become lethargic at these cold temps and are difficult to catch. When the bottom temp is cold, try bottom fishing somewhere else or try fishing on the surface for different species. You can detect cold water by feeling your lead sinker. The reefs in 60 feet and along the beach can have warmer water and can be productive for mutton and mangrove snapper. Some fish are more resilient to the
chilly water. Amberjack, cobia, and even snapper will rise easily to a chum slick on the 60-to-100-feet reefs. Look on your sonar for big fish way up in the water column. The cobia and AJ’s will swarm around bull sharks this time of year on certain reefs in the 90 feet range. They will slam a buck tail with a twisty tail worked very aggressively. The challenge is to get the fish boated before the bull sharks get them. Also, troll ballyhoo and big plugs where there are flying fish, scattered weeds and baitfish in the area. Kingfish right off the beach in 30-to-40-feet can be a good bet this month. Try a chum line and some live bait if trolling doesn’t get it done. In the Gulf Stream, there will be plenty of dolphin, wahoo and sailfish caught this month. Usually there is a good run of summer sailfish in July. Watch for the free jumpers and change your spread up a bit to include some naked ballyhoo. Calmer waters call for less commotion on the surface and a sneakier presentation. A good teaser will bring them into the spread. This month, the two-day lobster mini season is July 25-26. The lobsters of Sebastian are not as numerous as they are in south Florida, but they make up for it with their size. Fiveto 10-pound lobsters are common in our waters. Any of the reefs from the

uly can be very hot fishing if you get out early before the heat of the day. Walking the beaches of the Treasure Coast is something I primarily do in July, looking for schools of bait fish that will hold catch and release snook, Spanish mackerel, jack crevalle and some tarpon, that’ll be cruising around. You will want to carry things that will imitate the bait fish for best results. The LIVETARGET threeinch greenie and the four-inch Rapala X-Rap greenback or white back jerkbait will definitely be something that is tied on the end of my fishing rod. Also, a good concentration of whiting will be on the beach, sometimes fairly close, and using a chicken rig with cut shrimp or fish bites will be very

productive if you can not find any bait fish schools. The afternoon fishing can be just as productive as the morning, so follow the tides and try to keep in contact with other local fisherman so you know where the bait schools will be before you decide to head out on a fishing trip. Also, do not be afraid to show up at a fishing spot and decide to go
INSHORE — The summer snook spawn is in full swing. The beaches and inlets are still your bets for snook fishing. Buck tail jigs and live bait fished near the bottom and around the mouths of the inlets will work well. Always be cautious kayak fishing in the inlet, due to strong currents and large boats. Be sure to have a PFD and all safety equipment for any inlet trip. A good kayak launch is the south side of Jupiter inlet. Try fishing the outside
Offshore — Expect the offshore
kingfish bite to remain consistent, especially in the Singer Island area. Fishing the normal depths of 70-to150-feet will put you in the zone for kings. Fishing Boynton Beach area will put you in closer proximity to deep water for the sailfish, mahi and wahoo. If looking to get on a mahi bite, look to run out 5-to-8 miles to find a few fish. Most will be small, but there are chances for a big bull. The wahoo bite should be on the mind this month. Running baits deeper in the water column anywhere from 60-to-80-feet below surface will give you the best opportunity to land a wahoo. Fly Fishing Summer Vibes
T
here are few things that get me more excited and happy in the morning than leaving the inlet and scouting the beaches. You never know what you’re going to find and if it’s nothing then you make a quick run a little bit further out offshore. Sight fly fishing is the game and I don’t know one serious fly guy or gal who is not getting fired up when a school of tarpon, cruising snook on the beach, jacks, albies or mackerel show up. For quick handling and the ability to get the fly out NOW, not in 10-seconds, I carry an 8, 10 and 12-weight rod in the boat. All rigged with a floating, intermediate and fast sinking lines. These are nine rods ready to go which makes it very efficient when it comes to getting the fly quick in front of the fish. Finding fish and being ready and getting the fly in front of them is a big part of having success and many times it can make or break a catch. For this reason, I carry a leaf

uly marks the peak of summertime dive season in South Florida and is the best time of the year to experience what the Treasure Coast area has to offer. Don’t be fooled by freshwater releases, diving is still great! With calm seas, good visibility and lobster season right around the corner, divers will have plenty of opportunities to head offshore and enjoy some of the best diving all year. Just as calm seas and hot weather is the norm this time of year, so too are summer rains and unfortunately storm water runoff from the local area and Lake-O. Devastating as this is for inshore waters, many are surprised to learn the effects are less apparent offshore. Outgoing tides do carry this dirty water out local inlets, but usually just a few miles. Once outside of the tide water, visibility

returns to normal, and top to bottom days are still very common. One reason the Treasure Coast has such great diving and fishing is our location’s proximity to the warm, clean waters of the Gulf Stream. As the prevailing northbound current flows by the coast, freshwater near shore is constantly being pushed north and away from local reefs. In past months when discharges are at their peak, divers report clean water as long as they are offshore and away from the inlet. Head out to deeper reefs or south towards the Loran Tower reef and Hobe Sound area for best conditions. July also marks the return of the annual tradition of lobster miniseason and this year is shaping up
to be one for the record books. After Hurricane Irma, almost no one dove local waters for about six months due to rough seas and bad visibility. This means that for almost a whole season, lobsters were untouched from local waters all the way to the Keys. Additionally, many divers believe freshwater releases will drive lobsters out of local estuaries and onto the reefs where the water is saltier. With these two factors in mind, plus reports from divers last month, we are set for an epic mini season this year July is a great time of year to dive and provided tropical activity remains low, conditions should be spectacular. Whether it’s offshore or off the beach, the summer dive season is here.

"It looked like if the fish had jumped one more time, it might have spit the hook. I don't think she could have battled it much longer. When we got it on board, it was the biggest fish we had ever caught on my boat." And that's when Chandler suggested they keep fishing. But no one else agreed with that game plan. They wanted to make sure they had a chance to win the money. Sundance Kid and Adam Lambeth of Vero Beach took second place with a 44-pound dolphin to earn $3,000. Hot Pursuit with Doug McComas and Robert McComas took third place and $2,000 with a 30-pounder. Fourth place went to Pale House and Wayne Klekamp with a 29.20-pounder worth $1,000. Tag Team's Erika Wright won the Lady Angler prize of $250 with a 31-pounder, while Jimmy Wright IV won the top junior angler $100 with a 22.40-pound dolphin.

he Backcountry Fishing Association’s June tournament, held June 2 out of Little Jim Fish Camp in Fort Pierce, brought the circuit a few new teams and another grind on a hot Florida summer day. Twenty-eight boats checked out from the association’s 65 boat circuit, and 23 boats weighed in 18 trout and 13 redfish. New members, George Shabareck and Tim Shabareck, pulled off a first-place win weighing in a 4.50-pound trout and a 2.96-pound redfish (total weight 7.46-pounds) and took home $507.50, as well as an additional $190 for the trout Calcutta. Now that's a way to make an entrance! Ryan Jouppi and Luke King caught quality fish to take secondplace. The pair took home $304.50 for their 1.33-pound trout and a 6.01-pound redfish. Solo angler Chris Damon took third-place with a 2.14-pound trout

2018 Treasure Coast Caster of the Year
very summer, Treasure Coast Casters wraps up its tournament season with a “fish-off ” to crown the Treasure Coast Caster of the Year. This year, Kendrick Forlifer, from Okeechobee, earned the coveted title with his catch of two tripletails, one weighing 10.12-pounds, and a black drum, netting him 90 points in the final event. Tournament co-organizer Cammie Ward recapped, “We had a beautiful morning as we left Causeway Cove Marina in hunt of the 11 species on our tournament fish list. Of the 11 on the list, 5 were caught and weighed.” Over the course of the day, the junior anglers caught several snook, which were released, along with a few short trout, and many other fish not on the list. Boat volunteer Dorothy Markowski
reported, “The two Treasure Coast Casters on our boat kept their rods bent all morning, but they pulled in nothing on the list.” Capt. Charlie Conner reported the same.

Treasure Coast Waterway Cleanup

local waterways clean. “The waterways in the District can accumulate trash and debris from many sources. FIND sponsors voluntary waterway clean ups in each of the 12 counties in the District with Keep Florida Beautiful affiliates, as well as Marine Industry Associations,” says Janet Zimmerman, Assistant Executive Director for FIND. “We believe these cleanup efforts are important not just for the health of the waterway because of the removal of the debris, but they also help to bring together the users of the waterway in a spirit of community and in a way that fosters environmental awareness. These are good projects, and we enjoy sponsoring them up and down the waterway.” Cleanup volunteers will receive a commemorative event t-shirt and water craft participants will also receive a commemorative burgee. This year, organizers are excited to add additional clean-up sites, “This year, we’ll be adding two new sites in St. Lucie County and one in Martin County, and for the first year ever, we are including Jonathan Dickinson State Park and the northern reaches of the Loxahatchee River in Martin County,” said logistics coordinator Valerie Lindh. “In St. Lucie County we are adding the White City Park Boat Ramp in the North Fork of the St. Lucie River and the new Causeway Cove Marina at the southeast base of the South Causeway Bridge in Fort Pierce.” July 22-28 will be proclaimed Treasure Coast Waterway Cleanup Week by the counties of Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River, along with the municipalities of Stuart, Port Saint Lucie, Fort Pierce, Vero Beach and Sebastian. The governmental entities will all recognize the efforts of MIATC and the Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND), along with businesses, community organizations and the groups 1000 plus volunteers who work to keep

St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Update:
Voici Bernadette Set to Become SLC 52nd Artificial Reef
O
n June 7, McCulley Marine Services (MMS) towed the 180-foot coastal freighter Voici Bernadette from the Miami River to the Summerlin dock in the Fort Pierce Inlet to become St. Lucie County’s 52nd artificial reef deployment in the last 13 years. Earlier this year, the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners voted to accept this donation. McCulley Marine Services is preparing the vessel for sinking in accordance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s document National Guidance: Best Management Practices for Preparing Vessels Intended to Create Artificial Reefs. All deleterious substances shall be removed from the vessel including, but not limited to 1) floatables (wood,
plastics), 2) oil and grease, 3) PCBs, 4) asbestos and 5) lead-based paint (not found so far). In addition, all glass will be removed (to increase access by marine life) and doors and hatches will be welded open (to improve diver safety). This reef is intended to be a recreational destination. Due to permit requirements, this freighter must be deployed at depths of 150 feet or greater. With the maximum profile on this ship nearly 100 feet, anglers can fish for either benthic fish (bottom – i.e. snapper, grouper) or pelagic fish (water column - i.e. mackerel, sailfish). Many divers will also be able to use the freighter, subject to their level of certification. This project is a collaboration of several organizations both inside and
outside the County. The temporarily use of the Summerlin dock by the St. Lucie County Parks and Recreation Department and the infrequent, potential use of the Port of Fort Pierce during non-peak hours shows the environmental commitment of both the Parks and Recreation Department
and the Port of Fort Pierce. MMPS Environmental is preparing a series of fundraising events including concerts, festivals, and memorial plaques to help the County raise funds for cleaning and sinking the Voici Bernadette. Nicknamed “The Peoples Reef ” due to

their grass roots fundraising and the lack of governmental agency funding, MMPS is banking on its fundraising prowess and the desire of the people to fund this deployment. To emphasize the scientific and recreational aspects of this reef support letters have been provided by high profile conservation organizations (i.e. Coastal Conservation Association, Snook and Gamefish Foundation) and angling organizations (i.e. West Palm Beach Fishing Club). The Voici Bernedette reef is hoped to recruit the deepwater coral Oculina varicosa and associated fishes. Oculina corals have been discovered growing on the Tug Lesley Lee reef in both the annual monitoring and second annual monitoring. These
corals have also been found growing on the Muliphen reef. It is hoped that high profile, deepwater artificial reefs like the Muliphen and Voici Bernadette will provide additional habitat on which deepwater fish species including gag, scamp, and amberjack can spawn. These three species have been documented in large numbers on the Fort Pierce Sportfishing Club artificial reef site during spawning season. inkie’s Out garnered first-place in the Stuart Sailfish Club’s recent KDW Fishing Tournament. On board the winning boat was Capt. Jason Stocks, Troy McLean, Capt. Jeff Hedgepath and Merritt Matheson. Bonito Blast Local Fishing Tournament Shows Appreciation for the Sacrifices Made by Florida Soldiers who Served in Iraq and Afghanistan
N
ow in its sixth year, the Treasure Coast Bonito Blast (TCBB) works with over 100 Treasure Coast businesses to create an event that brings our community together in appreciation and support of local veterans. The tournament includes $2,500 in prize money, dinners, live music, auction items, and a raffle for a grand prize - a customized TCBB golf cart. What started as a small event has gained popularity over the past five years, becoming the largest oneday tournament on the Treasure Coast. Most importantly, the event has raised $250,000 for Wounded Veterans Relief Fund (WVRF) https://wvrf.org. WVRF was founded in 2009 to help wounded veterans transition back home in a productive, meaningful way. They provide immediate emergency financial
assistance to eligible disabled veterans who have served in the wars and conflicts since 9/11. More than 85% of all funds donated to WVRF go directly toward veteran assistance, earning them GuideStar’s platinum level recognition for performance in serving Florida’s veterans. They do what’s needed to help get lives back on track by helping with job training, housing, transportation, past-due bills, child needs, and other ways too numerous to list. “The veterans’ stories are why we do what we do,” said Mike Durkee, Executive Director of WVRF. “When they return home after fighting for our freedom, a new journey begins, often fraught with hardships. We are grateful to the community for their incredible generosity in support of

Monofilament Recovery and Recycling Program H
ow lucky we are to live in such a rich fishing environment! The Fort Pierce Sportfishing Club (FPSC) has committed to helping protect this environment through the Monofilament Recovery and Recycling Program(MRRP) under the auspices of Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Through this program, large, PVC ‘bins’ are located near boat ramps or other active fishing spots. Monofilament line does not biodegrade. The line is mostly clear, thin and difficult for wildlife to see. The very things which make it valuable
to us as fishermen are the reasons it becomes hazardous to other things around us. We are blessed on the Treasure Coast to have much wildlife: fish, turtles, dolphins, manatees, birds, all of which can be injured by getting entangled in our discarded line. Most of us who live near water have seen evidence of birds entangled in line, unable to fly. Monofilament has been known to do serious injury to our endangered turtle population as it wraps around their flippers making it difficult or impossible to move. Of course, line that ends up in the water can hurt or damage fish, dolphins and

manatees, as well as having an impact on boaters and fishermen. It can get wrapped around our props causing some very expensive damage. Divers and swimmers could also face serious harm from it. It is difficult to safely get rid of monofilament line. Even if tossed in the trash it will ultimately end up in a landfill where it can be scavenged by birds and animals. Nor can we put it in recycling bins. But, there are safe ways to dispose of it. The Fort Pierce Sportfishing Club is dedicated to doing what it can to safely remove this line from our environment. Our club members have surveyed the entire Fort Pierce area to first, identify existing sites and second to identify prospective sites, then seek permission from property owners to place bins there. We continue to add sites due to all the good ‘fishing spots’ here. Members have been collecting the castoff line placed in the bins. Then it is cleaned, packaged and sent off to be melted down and made into other plastic products, including tackle boxes spools for line, fish habitats, and toys. It is not made into more monofilament line. The Berkley Conservation Institute, part of Pure

Fishing, recycles the line. Berkley collaborates with other organizations such as ours to accomplish this mission. To date, the Fort Pierce Sportfishing Club has sent off 20 pounds of line. Another 20 pounds are packaged and ready to go. And, our members still have at least another 20-to-30 pounds collected that needs to be cleaned. Now, that’s a LOT of line. Needless to say, there are many members involved to accomplish this mission and many manhours. There’s not one of us who would object to you filling up all these bins. We would be happy to have the extra work! Certainly, this endeavor is in line with our Mission Statement which includes, “To encourage fishermen to pursue fishing with sound sporting and conservation practices and to advocate conservation measures which relate to all marine species and their habitats”. Most importantly, there is a map on this site which indicates the location of the bins throughout the state. So, even when you travel to new fishing spots, you will be able to know where to safely get rid of your line.

Open Carry Fishing Event Held at op-ed Ft. Pierce Inlet By Michael Taylor
A
great day of fishing and barbeque in memory of those who died defending our great country was held on Memorial Day. I hosted this event to make a stand for our Second Amendment/Open Carry rights at the Jetty Park in Fort Pierce from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. There was a turnout of over a dozen citizens carrying their handguns in search of that trophy fish. Unfortunately, all we caught were jacks. We all walked up and down the jetty while getting the message out ‘that guns are not the problem’, it’s the people getting the guns. If you are a law-abiding citizen, you aren’t going to hurt anyone. While engaged in fishing,
hunting or camping, going to and from an event, it is legal to open carry a handgun and/or rifle in the state of Florida, under the Florida Statute 790.25 (3)(h). With the help of FloridaCarry.org, Sgt. John Schramm and the Fort Pierce Police Department, we passed out information to the hundreds of people at the inlet to let them know what we were doing was legal and their right as a Floridian. We were welcomed by most of the people on the jetty with positive reactions, but there were some whom didn't agree with the law or guns. Looking forward to having more of these events across the Treasure Coast in upcoming months. Snook Lives Matter on Facebook will tell you when and where these events will be held.

orthern snakeheads are a nasty invasive species, which makes them all the more fun to shoot with a bow and arrow. Andrew Fox, of Mechanicsville, Maryland, spent Memorial Day weekend bowfishing with buddies at Mattawoman Creek in Charles County, Maryland. He came home with a new state record. The trio was out on the water for a few hours the night of May 24, waiting for low tide, but despite the favorable tides, recent rains made visibility nearly impossible. By pure luck, Fox caught a glimpse of a fish illuminated in the glare of the boat’s lights. Thinking it might be carp, Fox said he was slow to respond, but after a few seconds determined it was a snakehead. “That’s the biggest snakehead I’ve ever seen,” said Fox. Pulling back his bow, Fox struck the snakehead and hauled in the monster “frankenfish.” With the snakehead in the boat’s hull, Fox removed the arrow and said, “This might be a new state record.” In fact, it is now the biggest northern snakehead caught in the state of Maryland. Fox’s snakehead tipped the scales at 19.9 pounds with a length of 35.157 inches, breaking a 2-year-old record.

The team that accumulates the most points for blue marlin, white marlin and spearfish during the event’s three fishing days earns $25,000, while second- and third-place prizes are $10,000 and $5,000, respectively. All billfish must be released, except potentially record-setting blue marlin that exceed 600 pounds. Teams also can enter one fun fish (tuna, dolphin, wahoo or released sailfish) per boat per day for additional points. Marlin division competitors can pay an additional fee to compete for $10,000 in the fun fish division. Cash prizes await anglers who catch the three heaviest dolphin, three heaviest tuna (yellowfin, blackfin and skipjack) and three heaviest wahoo. The Key West Marlin Tournament is to begin with a 4 to 6 p.m. final registration Wednesday, July 18, at the Waterfront Brewery, 201 William St. A captains meeting, auction and raffle are to follow. Fishing is set for 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, July 19 and 20, and 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 21. Weighins take place after each day’s fishing on the dock behind the Waterfront Brewery. Tournament social events include cocktail gatherings, an island-style pig roast and a fish fry. An awards banquet at the Margaritaville Key West Resort & Marina, 245 Front St., is scheduled Saturday night. Entry fees are $1,800 per boat before June 15 ($2,100 thereafter) for two anglers, a captain and mate to compete in the marlin division and attend social events. T
he heat this summer has arrived with a vengeance. And for an angler, the best way to beat the heat is to do a little fishing in the dark. Typically, daytime fishing is tough during a full moon. I have not consistently been able to pattern fish during this lunar event, unless it’s at night. The darkness offers two advantages, cooler temps and a way for me to catch fish during what I consider the toughest moon phase. When the subject of night fishing in saltwater arises, it is generally followed by a discussion of lights. PAR 64 1,000 watt or underwater green lights are two of the most common types anglers use. Although I enjoy fishing with lights, in this column I’m going to cover fishing in the dark. First and foremost, always proceed with caution after the sun sets. This includes boating, kayaking or wading in from shore. Be prepared for the unexpected, let others know your location, bring ample lighting, and make sure your phone is fully charged. I find a headlamp to be ideal, and I can still use it with my head mounted GoPro. Not only does this hands-free light source come in handy for tying knots and unhooking fish, but it also illuminates the area for some cool videos. Another useful tool that helps me find my way back is a satellite map app on my phone. A clear satellite image can lead you back exactly to where you parked. I prefer to do my night angling from a kayak. Although wade fishing is my favorite method overall, I typically stay in the kayak at night to minimize some risk. I like to start excursions in the late evening, when I can still see and get an idea of where the bait is and the type of structure it is holding over. This not only points me to the right location, it also allows me to catch that sunset bite. Being on the water to see the day fade away is a relaxing bonus. As far as lure choice, I avoid treble hooks when fishing in the dark. I like to minimize risks when night fishing, and trebles are two more problems than I need dangling around in the dark. I switch out the trebles on my hard baits to single hooks prior to the trip in case the need arises to throw them. Overall, I prefer to fish weedless soft plastics. Often times, if your lure is not in the grass or touching the shell, you are not catching fish, and fish are what I want to catch, not the structure. Beat the heat this summer by fishing in the dark. pring and early summer were good to bass fishermen on Lake Istokpoga. Between February and the middle of June this year, the 27,692-acre lake in Highlands County produced nearly 100 largemouth bass registered with Florida’s TrophyCatch program and weighing heavier than 8 pounds. And that’s only the fish that were reported. There’s no telling how many big bass were actually caught. The highlights this year from the big-bass factory northwest of Lake Okeechobee were two largemouth bass that qualified for Tro-
phyCatch’s Hall of Fame, which means they weighed more than 13 pounds. On March 25, Syl Sims caught a 13-pound, 4-ounce bass from Istokpoga. He caught it with the Enigma fishing rod he won for catching a Hall of Fame bass last year. That fish weighed 13-pounds, 2-ounces and was caught out of Huckleberry Lake in Orlando. The second Istokpoga hall of famer was caught by Adrian “Lunker Louie” Echols, who has 50 bass heavier than 8 pounds and registered with TrophyCatch. Although he has come close before, the 13-pound, 14-ounce fish he caught from Istokpoga on June 6 is his first to qualify for Hall of Fame status. Since TrophyCatch was launched in 2012, there have been 430 TrophyCatch-approved largemouth bass weighing 8 pounds or heavier caught on Lake Istokpoga. A total of 347 fish have been entered into the Lunker Club (8-9.99 pounds), 81 into the Trophy Club (10-12.99 pounds), and Syl and Louie’s Hall of Fame catches make the first two Hall of Fame Club bass caught on Lake Istokpoga. As an integral part of the TrophyCatch program, all of these bass were released, so these trophies still swim in Lake Istokpoga. TrophyCatch Hall of Fame anglers each receive Bass Pro Shops gift cards, Spiderwire merchandise, a custom fiberglass replica mount made by New Wave Taxidermy, an Enigma fishing rod and a plaque from American Registry commemorating their catch. T
he sun is shining, and the water is warm, so it’s time to hit the beach! This summer, lend a hand in keeping your favorite beaches and reefs clean. Every day more marine debris is building up in our waterways and along the shoreline. By practicing the “one-piece” plan, over time you can make a big impact helping the environment and the animals that rely on healthy habitats. Each time you go to the beach, kayak or paddleboard along a waterway, dive underwater on the reefs, or hit the bay in your fishing boat, make a point to pick up and remove one piece of litter. Another easy way to have a significant positive impact is to add a fourth “R” to “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.” That fourth “R” is “Refuse!” Single-use items, like plastic cutlery, grocery bags, disposable cups and straws are a threat to animals like sea turtles and birds when they are whole. These items also break down to form micro-plastics, which are easily digested by many marine animals, and can wreak havoc on their digestive systems. Plastic bags pose a problem for our marine life if they end up in the ocean, as they resemble jellyfish floating along the surface, a tasty source of food for many animals. Sea turtles, sharks and even swordfish ingest these bags. As anglers, it’s important to know where you can drop off discarded fishing line. Pura Vida Divers serves as a great Monofilament Recycling Center for Singer Island and the West Palm Beach area. There are alternative centers throughout Palm Beach County as well. I’m sure there are centers in your area. If you’re ready to act and you’re in Palm Beach County, volunteer for the July Beach and Reef Cleanup with Pura Vida Divers to help us keep Phil Foster Park and our offshore reefs free of debris. Volunteers can walk the beach to gather litter, swim along the Snorkel Trail at the Blue Heron Bridge to remove in-water items, or scuba dive offshore to remove fishing line and marine debris from the coral reefs off West Palm Beach. The cleanup takes place on Saturday, July 14 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Kids and families are welcome to participate! All cleanup supplies will be provided, including gloves, grabbers, mesh bags for in-water volunteers and buckets for anyone cleaning the shoreline. Volunteer hours are available for students. If your movements are clumsy and erratic, they will be wary of you. How fish react to you is one of the best measures of your diving ability. If they scatter when you get near, you need to work on your body language and kicking technique. Navy Seals are taught that, “slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.” There’s no reason to rush anything. If you slow things down, you will avoid missteps. Not only that, but your breathing and heartrate will be lower, which is a huge advantage in the water. If scuba diving, you will conserve air. If freediving, you will be able to hold your breath longer. In either case, more bottom time translates into higher probability of landing that special fish you are looking for. Besides working on your diving technique, you might want to think about upgrading your fins. They are one of the most important pieces of equipment and will help you move smoothly. There have been many advances in technology in recent years. Fins tend to be lighter and longer, and freediving “longfins” tend to be sold separately. In other words, you buy the foot pockets and the blades from different manufacturers, so you can choose exactly what works for you. Some dive shops will marry the two for you, or you can assemble them yourself using marine glue. When choosing foot pockets, the most important aspects are fit and comfort. When choosing blades, check out the newer carbon fiber materials, which are stronger, lighter and more efficient than plastic. Fiberglass blades are a less-expensive, more-durable option. They both come in different stiffnesses. Firm fins are ¬efficient for going up and down. If diving all day with a lot of surface swimming, then softer blades would be more appropriate. toward striking, colorful designs and patterns. After all, we want fins that feel good and look good in our Instagram pics.

Tips for Divers: 1. Practice slow and smooth movements, and watch how fish react to you. 2. Observe and imitate someone who is better than you. 3. Have someone videotape you while diving so you can analyze yourself. 4. Do leg-strengthening exercises. The stronger you are, the more effortless your kicking will be. 5. Use long, smooth strides originating at the hip. 6. When ascending, use a dolphin kick, which offers greater streamlining and engages more muscle groups including your core. 7. Make sure you have the right amount of weight so you are not kicking to maintain buoyancy. 8. Use a Lycra or neoprene sock/bootie to avoid blisters. T
he surface pops, and I watch my line take off at 25 mph toward the open water. Snook on! This one is the largest of the day, maybe 27 inches, almost a slot. I keep my rod tip down, but she jumps out of the water then runs toward me. By the time I get the slack reeled, she’s past me and jumping again. That was my seventh snook of the morning, and I pulled her up take a photo with my phone before releasing her. I also managed to catch a 5-pound trout that was longer than 24 inches and broke my line as I tried to get a photo before the release. Like Mark Nichols, founder of the Stuart, Fla. lure company D.O.A, I like to wade when I fish skinny water. Whether you have a flats boat or wade, the same shallow-water tactics apply. You gotta put the lure where the fish are, and that day, two of the snook were so far under the mangrove branches that unless you skipped the lure perfectly, you had no chance of catching the fish. Most days I use a 1/16-ounce D.O.A. jig in chartreuse with a 4-inch pearl white paddle-tail. The light jig is best for skinny water because it stays near the top, and that’s what the fish want. You can fish it four main ways: 1) Jig it off the bottom, dead-stick it (let it sit), then repeat. This style of slow jigging works for redfish and trout, but anything will take it. Use this technique if you know fish are in an area or the bite is slow. 2) Swim the jig. The paddletail will move, and you use a steady slow retrieve, keeping the lure off the bottom. This method is easy, and it’s easy for fish to find the lure. 3) Use the jig like a jerkbait, giving it a lot of action. Pull it up to the top and keep it moving and then stop it so it suspends. This is the style I use most of the time. In this instance, the jig is a search bait. You fish fast and cover a lot of water. 4) Use the jig as a top-water lure. Jerk the jig up to the top after casting and keep the rod tip as high as possible. Twitch the jig on top of the water while reeling in so it can’t fall. This is a technique not many people use in skinny water, and it works very well for getting reaction bites. You’ll miss more fish, but sometimes the splashing on top is what turns the fish on. On my seven-snook day, I caught two in open water. There was a lot of bait, and the trout and snook were in the trough between the sandbar and the shore. Usually the best place to catch snook, reds and sometimes trout is around structure— piers, rocks, walls, docks, boats and mangroves. Two of the snook were in the mangroves, and when you fish under limbs and docks you have to skip the jig by throwing sidearm so the lure skips several times before it stops. If the target is far away, practice skipping nearer to you and bouncing the lure 25 feet on the first skip. It will usually skip again when it hits. Always skip across the shadow or into the shadow and twitch. Usually the fish will be in the shadow waiting for bait to come through. I usually skip a lure under piers and out the other side. If you skip under a pier and get a fish on, immediately wade or get on

the trolling motor to get away from the pier. Try to work the fish i n t o open water quickly. If you can’t get her out or she’s on the other side and the line is moving against the pier pilings, open the bail immediately, let line out and go under the pier. If you’re in a boat, go up to the pier and stick the rod under to the other side to see if you’ll get lucky. If you’re wading, after you go under the pier, you reel up the slack and see if the fish is still on. Many times it still is. This time of the year, head for the skinny water. THE NEKO RIG FOR SUMMER BASS

I
’m headed to Pickwick Lake today and have a Neko rig tied on. Don’t know what a Neko rig is? It’s a pretty simple rig that really works no matter where you fish. You’ll probably start catching so many fish with it that you’ll turn pro soon and try to beat me on the Elite Series! OK, maybe I’m exaggerating a little, but it does catch fish—and good ones too. The big bass shown here was one I caught on the rig in the Bassmaster Elite Series event
sluggish bass into biting. As more and more anglers get better at learning to fish offshore, the fish get more and more conditioned and tough to catch. The drop-shot rig was a technique I started to use when fish weren’t biting out deep in recent years. A Neko rig fits into that same category, but I think you can catch bigger fish with it. The main reason for that is you can use bigger worms and bigger hooks. For depths of less than 10 feet, I use a 1/32- or 3/64-size nail weight. Out deep, I go with a 1/16 to 1/8, depending on the depth and current in the lake. The best hook for this technique hands-down is the Mustad Titan X Wacky/Neko hook. Once you get a hook in them on this rig, they don’t come off. I throw the Neko rig on an MHX NEPS 81MXF spinning rod. It is 6’9” with medium action and I pair it with 10-pound Vicious braid and 10-pound Pro Elite Fluorocarbon. The bait of choice the majority of the time is a X Zone Fat Finesse Worm. When I’m out fishing deep on ledges, I’m not afraid to rig up an 8- or 9-inch straight tail worm as well. Green pumpkin works best around beds, and a plum color is good for deeper water applications. n the 20-year history of the Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit, only two teams have brought a fish heavier than 80 pounds to the scale. That changed Saturday, June 9, when team No Plan/ Contagious pulled up to the weigh-in on their Mercury-powered 34’ SeaVee with a fish bag that looked like it had a submarine in it. They pulled out a wahoo that tipped the scales at 85.7 pounds— the second largest fish in the history of the PBSC series! In addition to weighing the heaviest fish of the tournament, they also had four

nice kingfish from 11.9 to 40.3 pounds. The fish netted a total weight of 181.2 pounds that was enough to seal the victory in the 23rd Annual Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Slam and a check for $35,808! Team Doing it All/Hard Way, winners of the Saltwater Shootout in May, stayed hot in the Slam with a great catch of four tunas and four kings that tallied 164.9 pounds. Their second-place finish earned a $10,612 check and put them in strong contention in the season-long points race. No Plan/Contagious sits in second for the Showdown Crown points race followed by Gator One in third. The Top 5 in the Slam tournament were rounded out with Living Water in third with 139.6 pounds, followed by O-Sea-D in fourth with 129.6 pounds and Native Son in fifth with 116.4 pounds. Team Going Reel Deep weighed the heaviest kingfish of the tournament at 45 pounds. The big king and their eighth place finish netted them a check for $9,563. Team Offshore Warrior weighed the second heaviest king at 44.4 pounds. Their big king was worth $12,432, including a $7,000 check for the heaviest kingfish weighed by a member of the Southern Kingfish Association. Team Hoke’d Up had the heaviest cobia of the tournament at 34.7 pounds. They were also the top small boat and top non-pro team with total winnings of $4,527. Doing It All/Hard Way had the heaviest tuna at 32.2 pounds and Runnin’ Game had the largest dolphin at 12.7 pounds. The final leg of the PBSC series, the Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Showdown is scheduled for Aug. 4. There was no winner for the Pick 3 prize category at the Slam, which means the pot is expected to reach more than $35,000 at the Showdown in August. I
t all started for me when I began focusing on the big bull reds that prowl the waters around the St. Andrews Pass and the bridges in Panama City, Fla. I knew many of them lurked in those deep waters, and using live bait was usually a sure bet, but I get such a kick out of fooling fish with artificial lures that I had to explore the world of deep jigs like the Shimano Butterfly jig and the Offshore Angler Freestyle jig. When attempting to fool fish holding in water 50 to 100 feet deep, or more, you need a lure that gets down in a hurry. Not many tools can fill this niche, but these heavy, lead, streamlined jigs with the cool paint jobs come through in spades. Equipped with one or two hooks on a short tether, these jigs produce a wild, erratic fluttering on the fall, and when worked correctly, produce an enticing jumping action when ripped up off the bottom with the rod. The action is similar to a spoon more than a conventional jig, and fish of all species fall for it. It’s crucial to team your jig up with a properly rated rod. Deep jigging rods are usually short and work very well, but many rod types will get the job done. Spinning reels work fine, but I’ve found reels built for bottom fishing, like the Shimano Torium, to be my favorite. They’re smooth and fast, perfect for this technique. Spool up with 50• Safer to 80-pound test braid and a shock • Easier leader made of • Better 30- to 60-pound monofilament or fluorocarbon. Typically this is a vertical presentation with your boat positioned right on top of your target. Casting the jig, however, can be a very effective way of targeting fish that may be suspended somewhere in the water column and away from the boat. You can cover a lot of water using these jigs as a searchbait. Cast or drop the jig and let it settle to the bottom.
Then begin pumping it back to the boat. Work it with hard jerks several feet off the bottom, and let it settle on a semi slack line. Usually, a hard jerk works best. This triggers a strike without giving the fish time to think about what it’s looking at. You will feel the strike, and it will likely be on the fall, so hold on! I once had a large fish rip a rod right out of my hand. Down it went, the whole rig. That was a learning moment! Adjust your drag properly. I have experienced several days, both nearshore and offshore, when I caught fish about four to one against my partners using live bait. This is due to the bait’s ability to cover a lot of water in a short time with extremely effective results. I’ve caught reds, grouper, bonito, snapper, Spanish and king mackerel, trout, amberjacks, mahi and more using these jigs. It is an extremely exciting and productive fishing technique; give it a try! here’s no denying the effectiveness of presenting lively, active baits on the surface for just about any predatory offshore species. And kite fishing has to be the ultimate way to do it. he oldest fishing tournament on the Gulf Coast, The Deep Sea Roundup will return July 12-15 to the Texas Gulf Coast to celebrate its 83rd year. Hurricane Harvey roared into the Coastal Bend last year and left its mark on Port Aransas, but the PABA will hold the 2018 Deep Sea Roundup with the help of volunteer and the community fishing spirit. The Deep Sea Roundup began in 1932 as the Tarpon Roundup and has grown from a handful of Port Aransas fishing and hunting guides pitting their skills against one another to the largest family fishing tournament on the Texas Gulf Coast. The Roundup attracts anglers of all ages and skill levels, drawing over 800 contestants annually. The Deep Sea roundup is a volunteer effort that includes the chairmen, judges, dockmasters, master of ceremonies, weighmasters, photographers and more. This year’s tournament will include a silent auction for the Port Aransas Volunteer Fire Department, benefiting those firefighters who lost equipment during Harvey. As part of the Rebuild Texas Project, Tito’s Handmade Vodka has entered the tournament and will support the cause through both monetary and silent auction donations. Deep Sea Roundup includes Offshore, Bay Surf, Fly Fishing and Junior Division plus a free Piggy Perch contest for the little guys and gals. t’s summertime, and that means mako sharks on the fly in southern California! If you ever get a chance to try it, mako sharks are the premier summertime gamefish off our coast, and being able to sight fish a fly to them is an experience like no other in fly fishing. Here are some suggestions on tackle and flies to get you into the Mako shark game. Rods The fly rod used when mako shark fishing is more a fish fighting tool rather than a casting tool. Fly rods in the 12- to 15-weight range are what I recommend. These rods easily cast a large fly and have enough lifting power to fight a mako shark from deep water. For larger makos, I use one-piece custom rods that are 7 ½ feet to 8 feet in length and can cast a fly to 30 feet quickly and accurately. They are great fish-fighting tools, especially for makos in to 200- to 400-pound range. Reel The drag system must be able to apply at least 18 pounds of drag pressure at its maximum setting. Most fly reels used in the saltwater these days are designed to apply up to 20 pounds of drag pressure. The reason you want a reel to have this amount of drag pressure is to be able to apply maximum pressure on the fish when it is swimming away from the boat and during the final moments of the fight. You want to be able to “lock down” on the mako and hold it at the boat so you can get a quick release. If the drag is too light (not enough drag pressure), you will never get the mako to the boat. Line retrieval The rate at which the fly line can be retrieved depends on the size of the reel’s arbor. The larger the arbor, the more line you can retrieve in one revolution of the fly reel spool. I recommend using the largest arbor reel possible. Many fly reel companies make reels with large arbors specifically for big saltwater gamefish like makos, tuna and marlin.

Flies The flies I use for mako sharks are large-profiled flies with a foam popper head. These flies are typically 8 to 12 inches long and tied on plastic tubing. I prefer tube flies because they are able to slide up and down the steel leader, saving the fly from getting eaten up by the shark. My hook size varies from 6/0 to very large 10/0. As for fly colors, red/orange combo is what I like best. This color combo is easy to see in tough lighting conditions. However, I will have one rig with a different color fly. The reason I do this is if the mako gets turned off by the red/orange color combo, a change in fly color can get the mako to react to a different color fly. Now go catch some Makos on the fly!!
