t the 2018 Our Ocean Conference in October, Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park in The Bahamas was awarded the Platinum Global Ocean Refuge Award by the Marine Conservation Institute. This prestigious award recognizes marine protected areas (MPAs) for meeting the highest standards for biodiversity protection and best practices for management and enforcement. With the award, Exuma Cays joins a prestigious group of 10 MPAs that comprise the Global Ocean Refuge System. “The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park highlights the ability of a well-managed marine park to not only preserve the beauty of an area, but also to provide critical protection for marine life to maintain the delicate balance, and health of coral reefs and other marine ecosystems,” said Eric Carey, executive director, The Bahamas National Trust. “It also shows how no marine protected area is an island, and how outside factors, whether they be increasing sea temperatures or unsustainable fishing, can affect the ability of the park to safeguard the species and habitats within it. The Bahamas is currently addressing these issues by expanding its system of MPAs to build a network of MPAs that will replenish each other and surrounding areas, sustainably protect marine ecosystems and key species within them, while allowing human access and uses that are compatible with the goals of sustainability… The Bahamas National Trust is honored to be recognized by the Global Ocean Refuge System. There is no greater honor than to be recognized by the scientific community and peer management agencies.” Visit globaloceanrefuge.org to learn more about Global Ocean Refuges

T

he Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) is calling on Canada to enact new management measures to reduce the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence striped bass population. “It’s important that Canadian government leaders from across the country understand what’s happening in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and especially on the Miramichi River,” said ASF president Bill Taylor. “DFO has taken incremental steps, but more is needed to restore balance for all species.” Striped bass are native to the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence and were once considered threatened. All fisheries were closed by 2000, and a recovery target of 31,200 spawning adults was established. That goal has now been exceeded for eight consecutive years. Recent estimates show between 500,000 and 2-million striped bass spawn annually in the Miramichi. “We have clearly shown this concentration of striped bass is having severe negative effects on wild Atlantic salmon,” said Taylor. Since 2003, ASF and partners like the Miramichi Salmon Association have been tracking juvenile Atlantic salmon, known as smolt, in three Gulf of St. Lawrence rivers. Initially, 65-75 percent of tagged smolt survived migration through the estuary of each river. Survival rates on the Restigouche and Cascapedia rivers have remained stable, but a downward trend began in 2011 on the Miramichi, coinciding with the sharp rise in striped bass. Less than 10 percent of smolt tagged in the Northwest Miramichi River survived to reach the Gulf of St. Lawrence in 2017. The lower Northwest Miramichi is where the entire southern Gulf of St. Lawrence striped bass population gathers to spawn each spring. At the same time, smolt are migrating to the ocean.

It's been an unbelievable year and we would like to say a big "Thank You" to all our customers and dealers for helping make it happen! Let's make 2019 even better!

Habitat and Fishing Tips:

Florida pompano: Florida pompano are common in inshore and nearshore waters, especially along sandy beaches, along oyster banks, and over grassbeds. They are often in turbid water and may be found in water as deep as 130 feet. Florida pompano feed on mollusks and crustaceans, especially sand fleas. Local movements are influenced by the tide, and seasonal movements are influenced by temperature. Permit: These coastal fish inhabit tropical grass and sand flats, near reefs and wrecks. Permit have a specialized plate at the back of their mouth that helps them crush hardshelled animals such as clams and crabs. Anglers cast live crabs to schools of permit hoping to catch one of these line-stripping fish, which also take shrimp, clams and occasionally small fish. Permit are most common in south Florida. This member of the jack family can reach 40 inches and 50 pounds, but most are about 25-pounds.

What do the ratings mean? POOR day basically means the fish will either steal all your bait or will not even touch your line. FAIR day means that you catch one or two fish but you will have to work hard to do so. GOOD day means that you will catch enough fish to feel gratified. BEST day means that you will catch something almost every time you cast your line in the water. SOURCE: The Old Farmers’ 2018Almanac

appy dynamic December and Happy Holidays to all! `Tis the season to fish, as December will roll out stockings stuffed with salty presents in the form of the many offshore species of fish that inhabit the coastal waters of Martin County. Local anglers will be able to enjoy the seasonal excitement of being able to intersect and catch an all-star lineup of offshore gamefish like sailfish, dolphin, king and Spanish mackerel, grouper, and snapper. Florida`s winter weather will be in full swing this month, hosting the typical procession of cold fronts that will pass over our peninsula with fresh breezes. These fronts and

cold fronts. During these userfriendly days, fishing crews will want to target reef structures in 50 to 180 feet of water, as these reefs will be holding various baitfish that will prove to attract top water pelagics like sailfish, cobia, dolphin, and king mackerel, as well as bottom dwellers like snapper and grouper. Locating bottom structure to employ one’s fishing strategies upon, will be the key component to catching success during the month of December. Trolling, drifting, and anchoring strategies for deploying baits is always enhanced when doing so around and over top of some bottom (reef structures). Grouper will be at the top of the holiday fish wish list, as December will be the last month of an open catch and keep season that will close at midnight, December 31. The last chance to gather grouper groceries will have anglers targeting reef zones in 130 to 180 feet of water. Live baits of all flavors and heavy tackle will yield the best chances for success while bottom fishing for grouper. Lane, mangrove, and mutton snapper will also be high on the wish list and will be found in good numbers from 50 to 90 feet of water, especially around artificial

ecember can be great as the water temps cool down and some migrating fish species show up in the river and along the beaches. The Spanish mackerel and bluefish are always fun and easy fish to catch along the coast between the St. Lucie Inlet and Peck Lake Beach. They also show up inshore near the bridges and Crossroads. The best lures for catching them are Gulfstream Flash Minnows, Spoons, and Got-Cha Plugs. You can

always chum up the mackerel with glass minnows to keep them feeding behind your boat as long as you want. The snook have moved further back in the St. Lucie River in search of warmer brackish water. The Ten Cent Bridge and Roosevelt Bridge are the two best spots to try for them during the winter. They mostly position themselves down low near the bottom close to bridge channel fenders and abutments. For artificials, we use First Light Jigs, Giles Jigs, D.O.A. TerrorEyz and Shrimp. Cast these lures upcurrent and bounce along the bottom close to structure. The dock lights can be great in December for catching snook as the fish feed on minnows and small shrimp. This is a fun option for fly-fishing with a 7-or 8-weight fly rod and casting any small minnow fly pattern. Lots of anglers like to target pompano in December and there are many strategies to try for them. Cruising the flats for skipping pompano can produce the best

numbers but takes the most work and luck. Basically, drive all over the Indian River in three-to-fourfoot depth covering as much area as possible while looking back for pompano “skipping” in your boat’s wake. Have rods ready with sand flea chicken rigs and cross your fingers. Some other strategies are wading Sailfish Flats with a fly rod or spin

t took us all year long to get here but we finally made it, the best offshore fishing starts now. December traditionally marks the start of the winter migration. Sailfish, dolphin, wahoo, blackfin tuna, and almost everything else that swims make their way south in search of warmer water and more food as the waters north of here drop to unfavorable, uncomfortable and potentially even life-threatening temperatures. This time of year, my favorite wind is

from the northwest and the colder the better. That being said, there are always exceptions and usually as soon as I say something like that, expect the opposite. Trolling is my preferred method of attack in the early part of the season, but live baiting works well too, especially south of the St. Lucie Inlet, where the body of water between

depths of 60 and 400 feet narrows and the fish funnel between the reef and the Gulf Stream. The cleaner water down there also contributes to the effectiveness of live baiting. North of the inlet and when the fish are more spread out, trolling is a more effective way to target them. I like to pull at least one dredge, if not two, along with a chain as teasers. Squid Nation

rod using clousers and jigs. Lots of pompano are also caught jigging the Stuart Causeway Bridge’s west section with incoming tide. And of course, surf-casting is a great option during incoming tide, using sand fleas, clam strips, or FishBites flavored bait. Some popular beaches are Hobe Sound Beach, Tiger Shores, and Jensen Beach.

makes great dredge bars and artificial dredges I highly recommend. Four or five small ballyhoo rigged on Mustad circle hooks and maybe one bigger bait for dolphin and wahoo is my “go to” spread this time of year. I also always have a couple spinning rods with cobia jigs on them at the ready. R & R Tackle has a great selection along with various other things that I like. You should definitely check out their website for a variety of necessities. Whether you decide to troll or live bait this winter, I strongly recommend a pair of Xtratuf Boots and a set of Grundens foul weather gear. Without these, there is no way December would be my favorite time of year to fish. I hope you get out there this winter and I hope your next trip is Off The Chain. Looking forward to fishing with you soon.

ere it is December already and the holidays are almost upon us. Where has this year gone? I must say 2018 has been another great year for fishing all along the Treasure Coast. Both inshore and offshore have provided anglers with many great fishing adventures. The hurricanes left us alone this year and we anxiously await to see if our newly elected officials will work on the water issues for us. Hopefully, this winter will be milder, the water quality improves, and the fishing is great for everyone. December brings on the winter months and changes fishing tactics on the river. most anything smaller than them. Remember, grouper season will close December 31st and won’t open again until June. This Christmas surprise someone with a snapper in their stocking! Snappers will bring the heat on the cold days of December and make for some excellent holiday fare. Grilling fresh snapper filets in December is a delight and reserved for those who live along these latitudes. Take advantage of the large schools of snapper as they congregate to carol the grumpy groupers on the neighborhood wreck or reef. Keep the lines tight, and the bait light. Snappers are all about speed and opportunity and will make a dash for small delights they find in the water. Snappers are great fun to fight with the right set up. Sailfish will grace us with their presence in large numbers throughout the winter months. Get your topwater gear ready for some serious surface breaking action. Trolling live or frozen ballyhoo or even a lucky lure will do the trick. Make sure the ‘hoo’s are swimming properly and keep your eye on the reel. If you get lucky, please practice safe release methods. Handle the fish in the water, run water through its gills, don’t let them turn gray, work quickly with your camera.

he inshore fishing in December should be good for Spanish mackerel, big jacks and a few bluefish. They will be working the Fort Pierce Inlet and the turning basin. Just look for the birds and bait fish and you will find the schools of

fish. Have a small 1/4-ounce spoon or a flashy jig ready and you should have a blast. The snapper bite around the bridges and in the Fort Pierce Inlet will remain steady for anglers using a live shrimp or small white baits. The Fort Pierce Inlet has been the best place to catch a slot size snook while drifting a live mullet. Try the tide changes for your best chance. Reminder, snook season closes on December 15th and will reopen February 1st. Make sure your license and stamp are up to date. The trout and redfish have been a little shy but, a few nice fish have

been reported at places like Bear Point, Herman's Bay and at Jack Island. A large live shrimp will be hard to beat. Fish the shrimp under a popping cork in a three-to-five feet of water. Pompano have made a small showing but it should pick up as the month goes on. Try a sand flea or a piece of clam for the best results. The whiting, bluefish, jacks and pompano should be in the surf and a piece of fresh dead shrimp will work just fine for most of these fish. We re-opened our bait and tackle shop early November. ith cooling water and air temperatures, December is here! December will have the sailfish migrating south and traveling right through the Treasure Coast waters. Even though sailfish can be caught in our waters all through the year, this is the time of year that we will have the biggest abundance of them and they will be hungry. Sailfish seem to like rougher days with a lot of chop on top of the water. In December, we usually see a lot of cool and cold fronts approaching from the north making for windy conditions and rough seas. The average boater will not have as many days to get out and look for these fish due to the fronts making water conditions rough. It will be best to watch the pre-frontal and post-frontal forecast and pick your days.

Daniel caught this sailfish while bottom fishing in 200 feet of water out of Fort Pierce inlet. The sail ate a live pilchard on a flatline. After a quick pic, the fish was revived and safely released to live another day. PHOTO CREDIT: Capt. Danny Markowski.

Sailfish are the most soughtafter sportfish in our local offshore waters. Sailfish will be in depths of 80 foot on out. There are many ways to fish for sailfish. These fish can be caught slow trolling live baits such as sardines, threadfin herring or a larger blue runner. The most common method for targeting sailfish is to troll rigged ballyhoo with a circle hook on 25-to-30pound tackle. This tackle is enough for a good fight and will allow you

to quickly get the fish to the boat without tiring it out too much. The circle hook rig will allow the hook to get hooked in the corner of the mouth instead of a j-hook in which the sailfish could swallow causing internal damage. Another recommended way to get the sailfish’s attention is by dragging a couple of dredges behind your boat and in the prop-wash. Dredges vary in price and in looks. If you don’t have a dredge, you should

go to your local tackle shop and see the different selections they have available and prices then decide on which one fits your budget the best. You can also place some squid teasers off outriggers as an added invitation to bring a sailfish up to the surface. Keep a watch in the water behind what you are pulling and when a sailfish surfaces, drop a circle hook rigged ballyhoo back to the sailfish and reel or pull in the teaser and/or dredge back to the boat so he will eat the rigged ballyhoo. When hooked up with a sailfish, you will experience some magnificent jumps and speed combined into a great acrobatic show. After fighting a sailfish and getting it to the boat and getting your pictures, please take some care and revive the sailfish. If the hook did go too deep, please just cut the line as close to the hook as you can to cause as little damage to the fish as possible. To revise the sailfish, hold the sailfish boat side with the sailfish facing the bow of the boat and very slowly idle the boat forward to allow the water to wash over the gills until the fish is strong enough to swim on its own. Be safe on the water and catch them up!

ecember has plenty to offer inshore anglers. Just about all the fish species sought by Indian River Lagoon anglers are available in December. Water temps will be the key in deciding where to look for them.

Sebastian River – The Sebastian River plays many roles in winter. Its main role this time of year is that of a sanctuary from the sometimes lack luster winter weather. Anglers can slip into the river and have every cast action on jacks and ladyfish when the less stout of heart decide to stay home and wait for the wind to lie down and temperatures to return to Florida levels. This is great fun for family groups and jigs or live shrimp are all you need.

Big trout and reds hold up in the shallow backwaters in December. This trout was sight cast by Mike DiFiore of Micco with a live shrimp while looking for reds. PHOTO CREDIT: Capt. Gus Brugger.

Trout, bluefish, pompano and even a resident snook or tarpon can surprise anglers jigging the deeper areas of the north fork. Trout and reds seek shelter in the river during cold spells and can be targeted in the lower river with plugs, jigs, and live bait. Anglers looking for that last snook or tarpon of the season will find the Sebastian River the right place in December. The key is to fish the nice days when water temps get into the seventies.

Indian River Lagoon – Redfish

have historically been a favorite lagoon target in December due to their availability in good numbers, and because as lagoon waters cool, it becomes clear and allows for some of

the best sight fishing opportunities of the year. Fly fishermen and light tackle anglers can stalk along mangrove shorelines and get shot after shot at individual reds and occasionally pods of up to a dozen fish. Delicate presentation is more important than lure or bait choice as once the redfish realize they are no longer cloaked by the usually murky lagoon waters they can get very spooky. Seatrout fishing remains solid too with the larger fish still preferring shallow waters and the schoolie trout beginning to group up around the edges of the flats and drop-offs of the spoil islands. Some of the best inshore pompano fishing seams to coincide with the Christmas break and

Sebastian Inlet – Flounder take center stage at Sebastian Inlet from Thanksgiving on. Gulf flounder A.K.A. three spot flounder, are leaving the inlet in December, but the larger southern flounder are just beginning their run. Landbound and boating anglers both find soaking live finger mullet on areas of broken rocky/sandy bottom is the best way to put a doormat in the cooler. Flatties up to 15 pounds are an annual catch at Sebastian. Snook season will close December15, and depending on ocean water temps, legal fish can be caught right up to the deadline. Bluefish are usually abundant in and around the inlet and some of the biggest reds of the year can show up with the cold fronts. Read the rest of Capt. Gus Brugger’s December forecast online at www. ebastian offshore waters will produce lots of great fishing this month if Mother Nature lets us out. Early and mid-December usually provide some gorgeous days since the storms of fall have subsided and the northern fronts aren’t strong enough yet to push through our area. No matter what type of fishing you have planned, keep your eye out for threadfin herring (aka greenies) on your way out. Watch for birds, flipping bait and red masses on your depth finder. Have a sabiki rig ready and a quick stop may pay off big time later in the day. Bottom fishing definitely picks up this month as water temps cool. Grouper and snapper get back into those winter patterns in the water depths of 60 to 100 feet. The hard cold-fronts later in the month can really get the bottom bite going.

Use a combination of terminal tackle so you can pick up various species. A heavy fish finder rig with big baits will get the grouper, while a smaller circle hook and smaller bait attached to 40-pound fluorocarbon will get the snappers. Also, keep a light chicken rig off the bottom with a #1 hook to catch the tasty trigger fish. Go with the live bait if you can and slow drift fishy areas. Be ready for a kamikaze cobia to swim up to the boat. Have a cobia jig ready and follow that with a freelined live/dead bait if the jig is snubbed. Sebastian can be ground zero for sail fishing this month. Most years the area between Sebastian and Fort Pierce, in that 130 to 200foot range, produces lots of sails. The fish often times bunch up in this area before the cold fronts of January push them south. The best action comes from drifting and slow trolling live bait, but trolling with specialized gear like dredges, teasers and swimming ballyhoo/ mullet will score too. Don’t be surprised if there is a good run of dolphin this month. Look for clean, warm water and lots of bait and there’s a good chance the mahi will be there. December is also the month

when kingfish start to congregate in large schools and as a result, the commercial boats often converge on our area. These fish will be in the ten to 20-pound range and will bunch up at various depths between 50 and 100 feet. Often, you will notice schools of bait on your depth finder at mid-depths. The big red marks just below the bait are typically kings. They will come

to the surface especially early and late in the day for trolled ballyhoo rigs. The sure-fire way is to drift live baits down to the depths they are patrolling. Use light tackle to really enjoy these gamesters and don’t forget to use a few inches of wire to prevent cut-offs. Happy Holidays to all and take some time for yourself this month. Get out there and do some fishing!

ecember's fishing report will be a little something different for me. I start transitioning into more beach fishing for some of the migratory species such as pompano, bluefish and mackerel. Having two different types of rods and reels will help you take advantage of any opportunity during any given moment of the day. A longer 12-foot spinning rod will be for your pompano fishing and around an 8-foot spinning rod will be for throwing a spoon for the mackerel or bluefish. Keep in mind this is also a time of year where the wade fishing can be sometimes better during the latter part of the day, and this will always be dictated on the weather and water temperature. Slowing down my

approach on the flats with a D.O.A. shrimp or a suspending twitch bait will definitely be something that is on the end of my rod in the month of December. Redfish will definitely be on my radar. Some of the bigger bull reds will be pushing through the inlets and local flats of the Indian River

lagoon It is pretty hard to be a live shrimp under a popping cork or even using a Bass Assassin Sea Shad in a darker color. Also adding a rattle to your rubber bait will increase a good hook up ratio when the fish will be looking to find shrimp during these cooler months. Having a rattle in your bait will make a noise like a live shrimp fleeing from the grass. Yes, I just give up a great secret, but this will be the things you will have to do to increase your hook up ratio. During December, I will also be issuing my “Buy 1 Get 1” gift certificate for two people to go on one fishing trip. The cost is $100 and it is good for one year. You can contact me by phone, email or stop by Billy Bones Bait and Tackle in Port Saint Lucie to speak to me in person. Good luck during the colder months always remember to learn something on the water.

INSHORE — December will start to bring a few cold fronts our way. During the winter months, when water temps drop, targeting areas that warm quickly like docks, mangroves, mud flats and potholes will be the best bet. Getting out a little later in the day to allow those areas to warm will help you put more fish in the kayak. Sheepshead are a favorite of mine to target during this time. These fish are easy to catch on just pieces of dead or live shrimp around docks, bridges and channels while kayak fishing the intracoastal. Offshore — Offshore kayak fishing during the winter is highly dependent on the weather. These windy days will get the fish moving, especially the sailfish. A few days of high northeast should get them fired up and ready to eat your goggle eye or pilchard. While offshore kayak fishing the Delray Beach area, trolling the 90-200foot depths will give you the best shot at a bite. If venturing way

A nice clown knifefish caught on Lake Ida. PHOTO CREDIT: Brian Nelli.

offshore is not possible, try staying nearshore and target the bluefish and Spanish mackerel that will be running the beach. These fish can be a lot of fun on light tackle when maybe the other big pelagics are not cooperating.

Offshore — Depending on

how cold it gets, the peacock bass, largemouth bass and clown knifefish bite should continue to be great. Live shiners and or shad are your best bets while fishing Lake Ida and Lake Osbourne. All three of these fish will be looking for deeper water when the water temps get colder. Find the right depth and you will find the fish.

Fly Fishing Corner By Capt. Michael Mauri

The Mystics of Sinking Fly Lines

T

here is so much to write about it could fill a whole book. To keep it short and simple I’m only writing about lines I use here on the Treasure Coast in the warm saltwater and skip all the trout, steelhead and Atlantic salmon stuff. Why do I use sinking lines? In many situations just because you see fish on the surface doesn’t always mean you should fish a floating line. Sometimes strong current, waves or tons of bait fish can keep your fly out of the hot zone! Full sinking or at least sink tip lines are getting the fly in front of the fish much faster. Actually, I prefer full sinking lines in intermediate (slower sinking) and fast sinking. Many of these lines come with a 50-pound, 70-pound, and 100-pound core, which gives you a

lot more options in fighting big fish if you understand how to put the pressure on. You want to use the right size leader, tippet and backing when you fish that heavy duty. When do I use sinking lines? • From the Beach: Most of the time I use intermediate lines. If the waves are big, I prefer a fast sinking line. • Offshore: Intermediate and fast sinking lines depending on the situation. It is very rare that I use a floating line. • In the River: For snook and tarpon I use a lot of intermediate and fast sinking lines both during the day and at night. Learn how deep your fly is fishing in relation to line weight and speed (stripping, current) by counting. For the Spanish mackerel season

Robert Rainer from Germany caught this snook at the St. Lucie Locks on a finger mullet fly with an intermediate line. PHOTO CREDIT: Capt. Michael Mauri.

The world is round, water flows use a fast sinking line. Usually count slowly to ten and strip very fast. If and it all comes to depth and speed you have good current, cast and in relation to the fly we fish. Amen! just hold the line and you will be surprised how many fish you can Capt. Michael Mauri catch even without stripping! www.mauriflyfishing.com Intermediate lines are also great michael@mauriflyfishing.com for popper fishing. (772) 485-3321

hile most of the country is trying to stay out of the snow and ice throughout December, divers on the Treasure Coast are still enjoying relatively warm water and plenty of action on area reefs. Even when passing frontal systems churn waters offshore, savvy divers can still enjoy the water if they know where to look. Timing is everything when it comes to diving in December and keeping an eye on the wind really helps predict when conditions will cooperate. Sometimes these windows are short or happen to fall on weekdays and when this happens there are still plenty of options this month to explore inshore areas if it is too rough to head offshore. Generally dry conditions over the

last few months and no discharges from the Lake have setup for some pretty unique dive and snorkeling opportunities our area has not seen in quite some time. Zero runoff has

given water from the ocean a chance to flush the Intracoastal Waterway and has brought some really clean and clear water into the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon.

During high tide, excellent visibility has been reported as far inland as Hell’s Gate in Stuart and the Fort Pierce City Marina, allowing for great snorkeling along mangrove islands and channel edges. Even commercial boat bottom scrubbers have reported an unheard of 8-to-10-foot visibility at the Roosevelt Bridge within the last few weeks! Places like the mangrove shorelines of the Stuart Sandbar, Boy Scout Island, Sewall’s Point, and the north side of the Fort Pierce inlet and Fort Pierce Cove can be surprisingly rewarding with many really cool species in a small area. Big schools of snook, jack crevalle, lookdown, black drum, snapper, eagle and sting rays, and more have been seen in shallow water less than 10-feet deep. Many of these areas are perfect for snorkeling and some still find they are able to strap on a tank and get closer to the fish near the bottom. It is important to remember adhering to dive flag laws and staying safe is critical when snorkeling inshore, since many locations are very close to busy channels. While exploring inland waterways, divers and snorkelers must use sound judgment and remain within 100 feet of a dive flag, as oppose to the 300 feet (100 yard) rule while offshore.

Dear Anglers & Participants -

On behalf of the members and sponsors of the Stuart Sailfish Club Foundation (SSCF), welcome to the 65th Annual Light Tackle Tournament (LTT). In Stuart, Florida in 1941, the largest sailfish run in Florida’s history occurred off the St. Lucie Inlet. Club records show an excess of 5,000 sailfish were caught, including more than 200 on a single day. While many sportsmen released their fish, far too many were slaughtered. The late Captain Curt Whiticar, a long-time SSCF member and supporter, suggested and later designed a release pin to be awarded for letting sailfish live. Wearing the pin was considered a badge of honor among fisherman who enjoyed the sport and did not want the wasteful killing of a species. That began the Club’s history of conservation. Today, catch and release fishing is practiced internationally, ensuring the sustainability of fishing and fish populations. The first Light Tackle Tournament was held in 1955, long before some of you were even born. At the inaugural LTT, famed editorial columnist for the Stuart News, Mr. Ernest Lyons, gave The Stuart Sailfish Club praise for promoting more sportsmanlike fishing. Since then, we’ve raised thousands of dollars to promote the conservation of our marine resources while enjoying the sport of fishing. Hundreds of fishermen have participated in the annual event, and thousands of sailfish have been caught and released. When you participate in the Light Tackle Tournament, you too, are committing to the cause of marine conservation. You too, are helping young students earn degrees in the area of marine conservation and sciences. And, you too, will help our Club continue its legacy. We’re excited to host the event again this year from the Hutchison Island Marriott Beach Resort, a resort famed for family fun. We believe that entire families should be able to enjoy our tournaments, and hosting them at a venue such as the Marriott Resort, offers folks of all ages an opportunity to have fun swimming, playing golf, enjoying water sports and more. Thank you for participating in this year’s Light Tackle Tournament. We hope you have a great time, enjoy other Club members and participants, and feel good that you are a part of something much bigger than “simply fishing”. Best of luck to all of you! STUART – There was no better way to wind up the area’s longest-running sailfish tournament than with a good old-fashioned shootout. And when the salt spray settled, the difference between the top two teams all came down to the time of the last sailfish released. Alikai, led by Capt Patrick Price of Jensen Beach, and joined by owner Geoff Mayfield of Stuart; his dad, Keith Mayfield; anglers Kevin Hawken and Chris Lazzara; and crew Dave Dalfo and Marshall Busha won the 64th annual Light Tackle Sailfish Tournament hosted by the Stuart Sailfish Club.

They edged out the team aboard Sea Hag, led by Capt. Chris Kubik. Both teams finished the tournament with 20 sailfish releases over three days, but Kevin Hawken’s catch and release at 2:33 p.m. on the tournament’s final day, Sunday, was just a little ahead of Sea Hag angler Kevin Miles’ catch at 2:58 pm. Alikai also was the top boat of the day, winning Sunday’s daily award with 11 sailfish releases, ahead of Saturday daily winner Vintage, led by Capt. Hans Kraaz with nine, and Friday daily winner Cowpoke, led by Capt. Mike Brady with seven. The Florida Amateur Sailfish Championship, fished by three boats in its fourth year, was won by Kingsbury, led by Capt. Dewitt Davenport with four sailfish releases. The entire 15-boat fleet, including the amateur division, tallied a total of 86 sailfish releases Sunday and 191 overall to give the 64th annual affair its 13th highest sailfish catch total.

“If there was any tournament I wanted to win, it was this one,” said Geoff Mayfield, who with dad, Keith, has fished the Light Tackle off and on for the past 20 years. “Growing up here, this tournament has always been special to us.” Price, who also notched his first Light Tackle win at the helm, felt much the same way. “I’ve always wanted to win this tournament ever since I was just a kid,” said Price, 39. “I’m pretty excited.” Price remembered being a kid growing up in Port Salerno when he would go to Sailfish Marina in the Manatee Pocket and sit atop dock boxes on the fuel dock to watch the fleet return from fishing. The difference in Alikai’s tournament victory turned out to be a final day mid-morning move executed by Price. “We started off to the north, fishing with the rest of the fleet and went 1-for-5 in the morning,” Price explained. “I just felt the anglers needed a reboot. It was something I learned as a mate fishing these tournaments with V.J. (Bell, of Unbelievable), Scott (Fawcett, of Off the Chain) and Glenn (of Floridian), that when things don’t seem to be working out right, pick up your lines and get out of Dodge.” Price said they made a move 7 to 8 miles to the south at about 10:30 am They started seeing sailfish right away, and began steadily getting bites. But a flurry of action around 1:00 pm sent Alikai soaring up the leaderboard.

“Dave’s bait got picked up and I circled, and then we had a quad, and caught it,” said Price, speaking of a quadrupleheader, or when four sailfish are hooked on all four fishing lines simultaneously. “We set the lines back out and had another one right away.” Price said they wound up with about 21 bites on the day and caught 11. He saw several more than didn’t bite. Kubik, fishing with Sea Hag owner Charlie Duerr of Pirates Cove, N.C., and anglers Rob DeYoung, Junior Bass, Billy Joyst, Kevin Miles and Kenny Powers, said his team had enough shots to win. “We’re disappointed we didn’t win,” Kubik explained, “but we’re thrilled to come here, and to do as well as we did against some of the best sailfishing teams in Florida and the country. Floridian, led by Capt. Glenn Cameron of Stuart, and fished by Patti and Rob Miller of Palm City, Jimmy Vaughan of Lake Wales and J.J. Davidson, finished third overall. 2018 – A Year of Rebranding for the Stuart Sailfish Club When Charlie Conigliaro became the President of the Stuart Sailfish Club (SSC), he promised great changes and boy, did he deliver! A successful business man himself, Conigliaro knows the importance of putting your best foot forward, making a good first impression and giving the customers what they want. He brought those same philosophies to the SSC and has made 2018 one of the most successful years the club has ever had. NEW WEBSITE One of the first things Conigliaro tackled was designing a new website. The new website is polished, professional looking and dynamic with video on the front page that highlights the clubs’ history, events and members. The website, designed by local design company FCEdge, can be updated and maintained by SSC staff. Take a look at our fantastic new website at www.StuartSailfishClub.com. NEW MARKETING MATERIALS When Conigliaro looked at the marketing materials the club was using, he realized these were just as out dated as the website. FCEdge designed a new portfolio that included a pocket folder, sponsorship package, membership application, Logo refresh and business cards. NEW LOCATION One of the challenges the Club has had over the years is its location. Being housed in small quarters has meant the staff has had to do accounting, emailing, event coordination and more in the same room that meetings are held, and that volunteers work in while organizing silent auctions, prizes and more. The lack of a quiet, private office to work in has not been efficient or productive. Now housed at 3867 SE Evans Terrace in Stuart, staff has a private office, a bathroom, a conference room for board and committee meetings, storage closets and rooms and a small kitchen. Parking is no longer an issue with a large parking area in front of the building. And more exciting news is the construction of a new pavilion next to the club house in the works. If you haven’t visited the new headquarters yet, we invite you to come by and see us.

MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION

NEW STAFF Along with a new location, SSC also has a new full-time club administrator, Cheryl Bragg and a part-time assistant, Cheri Salser. These two staff members are working hard to help keep the club on track with its goals. SUCCESSFUL FISHING TOURNAMENTS The KDW Tournament, The Junior Angler Tournament and the Saltwater Sisters Lady Angler Tournament were all great successes this year with more boats participating, more sponsors and greater fundraising. BROUGHT BACK THE TREASURE COAST CHAMPIONSHIP Speaking of fishing tournaments, the wildly popular Treasure Coast Championship will finally be held again. The Championship is open to anyone who fishes the three legs of the Treasure Coast Sailfish Tournaments, including The Pirate’s Cove Sailfish Classic, The Light Tackle Tournament and The Pelican Yacht Club Sailfish Classic. Winner will be announced at the Pelican’s Awards Dinner.

Stuart Sailfish Club Hosts Successful 40th Annual Jr. Angler Tournament Blue skies greeted nearly a hundred young anglers as they participated in The Stuart Sailfish Club’s 40th Annual Jr. Angler Tournament on August 10th & 11th. The annual event brings youth age 6-18 years old from the Florida Sheriff’s Youth Ranches in Live Oak and Bartow, residents of Lahia House, and other local kids together for a fun day of fishing, education and an awards luncheon. “This year’s event was the best Jr. Angler Tournament we’ve had to date,” said Club President Charlie Conigliaro. “The kids had so much fun fishing, winning prizes and spending the day on the water. Most of these kids would never get to experience this kind of day otherwise, so we’re really honored and happy to provide them this tournament. I can’t express enough my appreciation to Tournament Chair Dave Astras, our sponsors and all our volunteers, without whom this could never happen.” The tournament offers kids a real offshore fishing experience that includes going through a true weigh in, training on catch and release, fishing ethics, safety, knot tying and more. The children are each given a rod, reel, tackle boxes and angler bags filled with hats and school supplies. A large part of the experience are the raffles and awards. Each child was given a ticket for a chance to win bikes, skateboards and other fun prizes. A lunch was provided by Jersey Mike’s Subs for participants and volunteers after fishing.

Bill Whippen – In Quiet Service To Others Now and then, a person walks through this life very quietly touching other people’s lives, with soft words of support, whispers of encouragement, and gentle smiles of acknowledgement. Bill Whippen loved to serve and his legacy is proof of that devotion. Bill was born June 16, 1921 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His family was a typical family with a strong work ethic; his grandfather manufactured ice cream, and his father spent time in the service. As a youth, Bill spent his summers at the family’s house in Lanesville. At the young age of 15, Bill became a lifeguard in Worcester. Bill attended high school in Cambridge followed by a year at Harvard. But he felt the call of duty and entered the Air Force, where he spent the next four years teaching pilots how to figure out where they were going using celestial navigation. Bill left the service in 1943 and in 1945 wed his first wife, Mary. Mary’s father was a boat builder and built her and Bill their first boat, the Felorinda, thus beginning Bill’s long love affair with the sea. The boat was the first of many for Bill, but this was certainly his first nautical love. Bill eventually went to work for a lumber company as a sales manager in Boston. After 26 years of marriage, Bill lost Mary in 1971. Not long after, while attending a high school reunion, Bill met Polly, whose husband had also died. Bill and Polly married a year later and they moved to Florida. They lived in Hobe Sound on a canal where they were able to have their boat, Kugels, close by. It was Bill’s love of service to those around him and in his community that many people remember. He was a member of the Hobe Sound Rotary Club, serving as their President at one point. Bill lived Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self” and volunteered whenever and wherever possible. Bill was also a dedicated member of the Stuart Sailfish Club. Here, Bill was able to fulfill his passion for the water and service to others combined. He served on numerous committees, ran tournaments and served on the board of directors for more than 30 years, serving as President of the Club from 1999-2001. The Light Tackle Tournament meant a great deal to him and he sponsored the brass plaques that were given to participating boat owners at the tournament. He believed in the Stuart Sailfish Club’s mission of marine education and conservation. When his beloved Polly died in 1998, Bill created and sponsored the Polly Whippen Memorial Trophy that is awarded each year to the Top Lady Angler Club Member at the annual SaltWater Sisters Lady Angler Tournament. He was resolute that Polly’s life be remembered long after she was gone. Bill was certainly a man’s man, with a passion for boats, fishing and bourbon. Bill passed away on November 3, 2017 at the age of 96. But his legacy lives on with bequeaths in his will to both Rotary and the Stuart Sailfish Club. He also requested that the Club continue the Polly Whippen award after his death. Bill will forever be a part of the waters that he loved as his ashes were scattered in the Gulf Stream. Those that knew Bill know it’s possible he’s also helping guide pilots through the celestial stars at night, once again, quietly serving others.

SaltWater Sisters hosts 33rd Successful Event For Breast Cancer Causes In 1985, long before there were so many events to raise awareness of breast cancer, The Stuart Sailfish Club hosted the Inaugural SaltWater Sisters Lady Angler Tournament to benefit local breast cancer related organizations. Thirty-three years later, the tournament is still going strong and still raising money to benefit those on the Treasure Coast fighting breast cancer. The Stuart Sailfish Club’s SaltWater Sisters 33rd Annual Lady Angler Fishing Tournament was held on September 14 & 15 and was deemed a great success this year, raising funds to benefit local breast cancer organizations and scholarship funds. With more than a dozen women, and a few dedicated fellows too, organizers pulled off a fishing competition, raffle of a golf cart, huge silent and live auctions, costume contest and not one, but two parties! The event was held at Pirate’s Cove Resort and Marina. “This was a really exciting tournament again this year,” said Jason MacKenzie, co-chair of the tournament. “We had more boats and anglers than the last few years and we certainly raised more money. We’re so happy to be able to help those in our community fighting breast cancer.” Funds raised will benefit Friends in Pink, a local not-for-profit organization that helps pay the medical bills for those in the community who are fighting breast cancer and are uninsured or under-insured. It will also benefit Windsor Community Angels, an organization that provides free mammograms and diagnostic ultrasounds to detect breast cancer. Lastly, a certain portion of the funds raised will go to the Stuart Sailfish Club Foundation’s Scholarship Fund. The Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to local graduating high school students who plan on entering a marine-related field. “This annual event raises money for some great causes but also brings awareness to the organizations it benefits,” said Charlie Conigliaro, President of the Stuart Sailfish Club. It gets bigger every year. We could not do this without the volunteers, sponsors, donors, and anglers. Thank you to everyone who participated.” The tournament had a turnout of 20 boats with a total of 88 anglers. Among those were 16 ladies who fished on the charter boat Safari 1. CoChair Amy MacKenzie said being able to offer a place on a charter boat to anyone who wanted to fish but doesn’t have a boat was a big draw. “I know a lot of ladies who love to fish, and wanted to help raise money to fight breast cancer, but they don’t have a boat or know anyone with a boat. This gave them an opportunity to participate in an event they normally wouldn’t be able to. It also meant more money raised for our benefitting organizations.” Sponsors included HMY Yachts, Coastal Angler Magazine, TentLogix, Pirate’s Cove Resort & Marina, Marine Max, Caza Offshore, Whiticar, Shurhold Industries, Ted Glasrud Associates, Hinckley Yachts, Tito’s Vodka, Windsor Imaging, Ocean Blue Yacht Sales, Rupp, Fogel Capital Management, Palm City Yachts, MetCo Marine Electronics, Blue Marlin Cove Resort, Cape Eleuthera Resort, WAVE 92.7, and Coast 101.3.

Winners of the Tournament included: TOP Angler & Tournament Winner was Jennifer Cameron of the Floridian who also won the prestigious “Polly Whippen” award for the outstanding Lady angler. Jennifer had (2) Sailfish releases; Sailfish Division—1st Place Jennifer Cameron of the Floridian (2 releases) & 2nd Place Amanda Michaels of “Lo Que Sea” with (1 release); 1st place Dolphin division winner was Rebecca Wiler of “Triple Net” (18.31 lbs) and 2nd place Dolphin was Rylee Hocsetter -a Jr angler of “Dream Maker” (11.87 lbs); Kingfish division: 1st place was Deanna Miller (14.71 lbs) & 2nd place Veronica Vicente (14.46 lbs); Grouper Division– 1st Place Sara Salt, Snapper Division 1st Place Becky Telfar of The Safari 1 Charter Boat (.89lbs) & 2nd place Sarah McIlhinney of the Safari 1 Charter Boat (.82lbs); The TOP Safari 1 winner was Sarah McIlhinney; TOP JR Angler is Rylee Hocsetter of “Dream Maker”. The President’s Message Dear Club members, As 2018 comes to a close and we look forward to 2019, I want to take time to express my gratitude for many people. This year saw so many changes in our Club including a new website, new marketing materials, new clubhouse location and new administrative staff. While all those were my goals as President this year, none of that could have happened without the hard work, dedication and vision of others. Thank you to our Club’s Board of Directors for their willingness to think out-of-the-box and for having the courage to take the leap of faith and approve the many expenditures to move our Club forward. Nothing of value comes free or easy. Many people prefer to keep the status quo and not rock the boat. I am grateful to the Board Members for understanding the importance of everything we have accomplished this year. I am grateful to the chairs of each of our very successful fishing tournaments this year. The KDW, SaltWater Sisters and Jr. Angler Tournaments grew by leaps and bounds this year. And those that take on the challenge of and responsibility of chairing a Tournament are taking on a lot of work for which they are not paid. These Chairs put in endless hours getting sponsors, creating budgets, hosting meetings, recruiting volunteers and more. The success of this year’s tournaments is surely a testament to the Chairs. As important as the Chairs are, the volunteers who help with the Tournaments, rendezvous and social gatherings, are just as important. One person cannot run the whole show. It’s a team effort from beginning to end. And I know that without our volunteers, our unsung heroes, we would not have the success that we saw this year. Without funding, we could not continue with our commitment of promoting marine conservation, providing student scholarships or hosting fun events for our members. Our sponsors make this all possible. They provide the fuel that drives this Club. Finally, it is for our members that we do everything we do. It is for our valued members, our customers, that we host our socials and rendezvous. Providing value for their membership is important and I hope that each member finds value in belonging to the Stuart Sailfish Club, the oldest sportfishing club in Florida. Thank you to all of the above, our Board of Directors, our tournament Chairs, our sponsors and our members as well as so many others in the community. I look forward to serving as your President in 2019. Charlie’s signature 2018-2019 President

St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program Update:

Baitfish on Tug Kathleen.

Voici Bernadette T

he deployment of the 180-foot long Voici Bernadette is intended to help improve fish stocks, create an additional recreational destination, and benefit the local economy. Florida Sea Grant reports Florida’s artificial reefs provide 39,118 jobs, generate $3.1 billion in economic activity, produce $1.3 billion in income, and result in $250 million in state revenues. Sinking the Voici Bernadette in 100-foot depths will increase the utilization of this reef to both anglers and divers. Sinking the Voici Bernadette in this relatively shallow water also ensures utilization by adult fishes such as gag, scamp, black grouper, amberjack and juvenile snowy grouper. Numerous invertebrates will also colonize this reef. It will be important to increase the stability of the ship by adding concrete ballast to the ship and by anchoring the reef with several different anchors. Additional ballast may include secondary concrete already stockpiled at Harbour Pointe Park and end-of-day concrete pumped into the cargo hold. St. Lucie County artificial reefs on this reef site have additional ecological benefits including habitat for apex predators and forage fish. Sharks are known to feed off the sick and injured. In this role they keep populations of other fish healthy. Sharks already found on St. Lucie County artificial reefs include hammerhead sharks, lemon sharks, nurse sharks, silky sharks, and white sharks. Large schools of baitfish on this reef will provide anglers with live bait and forage to other predators. The influx of the invasive lionfish

Biggest fish of the tournament went to Ciara Franqui for her 2.8125-pound black drum, earning her a prize bag and a D.O.A. tackle box filled with plastic baits. Both first place winners, Nicholas Rosario and Ciara Franqui, received Fishing Center gift cards, donated by Treasure Coast Casters supporters Pat and Gwen. The next Treasure Coast Casters inshore tournament will be held on December 9, 2018. Treasure Coast Casters offers experiences that educate young anglers on the importance of marine conservation, while maintaining a sustainable and healthy estuary and marine environment. The allvolunteer non-profit offers two fishing tournament divisions, a Junior Division for youth 5-11, and a Senior Division for youth 12-18. There is no cost to join or to fish a tournament. Anglers bring their own bait and fishing gear. For the latest tournament news and updates, follow the Treasure Coast Casters Facebook page. Cammie and Capt. Who Taught You to Hunt? By Tony Young

W

ith much of the Panhandle still coping with the devastation from Hurricane Michael – a recovery that may take months – we continue to be proud of the spirit, perseverance and fortitude of those who were affected. Our responding officers have seen firsthand people lending a hand to neighbors, friends and strangers; contributing essential items to those who lost everything; being more patient; and expressing gratitude. The kindness and compassion has been uplifting. As the holidays near, celebrating that powerful sense of community will be top of mind for many. For the hunting community, it’s a wonderful time of year to remember those who introduced us to hunting. And the holiday gives us a great opportunity

to pay it forward by taking someone else hunting such as a neighbor, friend, family member or coworker. There are many people who didn’t grow up hunting but became interested in experiencing it and enjoying the benefits of eating healthy, organic protein as adults. Denise Helms, the Florida state chapter president of the National Wild Turkey Federation, (and Treasure Coast resident) is a perfect example. She didn’t go on her first hunt until she was 24 years old when a friend invited her to go turkey hunting on public land. “I’m game for anything, so I went along. I just like being outdoors,” Helms said. Helms loved the experience of sitting in a homemade palmetto blind, taking in the sunrise through an oak hammock and hearing wild turkeys gobble for the first time.

she had the opportunity to go hunting again. In 2008, she harvested her first turkey, deer and wild hog. By engaging herself in hunting, Helms has gained a whole new family. “Acquaintances turned into friends who turned into family – people who care about conservation, support me incorporating hunting into my life and help me succeed,” Helms said. “It’s a great feeling having mentors like that who I can learn from.” Helms admits she’s not a hunting master yet, so she hasn’t personally guided anyone on a hunt. But she’s been doing her part in passing down the hunting tradition by volunteering with her local NWTF chapter and serving on its board since 2011. Denise Helms, Fort Pierce Helping plan and host a Women in resident and Florida state chapter the Outdoors event for other women president of the National Wild further ignited her passion for Turkey Federation. hunting. or much of the U.S. it is time to don winter coats, sweep the chimney and winterize the boat. As the temperature plummets, it’s easy for the mind to wander toward thoughts of warm sun and a beach escape. For the fishing crews in Nosara, Costa Rica, the forecast for the next 10 months is perfect sunshine and clear fishing weather. Best of all, this is the time of year when big dorado provide plenty for the Christmas dinner table. Here in Costa Rica, our fishing pattern resets each year. Ever since the rainy season ended in early November, we have seen large

schools of dorado stacked up like cordwood. Also, there are swarms of sailfish and the occasional marlin stalking these mahi-mahi meals. We expect this feeding pattern to continue until late-March when the dorado will be replaced by schools of yellowfin tuna moving in from the north. Gangs of spinning dolphins will show us the way to these tasty ahis, and once they show up the tuna bite will strengthen until our end-of-season in early September. Our offshore marlin, yellowfin and dorado all follow schools of bait that move from north to south along the Pacific coast. Conversely, our inshore fishery doesn’t depend on pelagic bait migration patterns. Instead our secluded port of Garza Bay is fed by local mountain rivers. When the cool, nutrient-rich river water collides with the warm, fast-moving saltwater of the Pacific, conditions are perfect for localized swarms of baitfish to form. This “homegrown” bait supports a ravenous population of big roosterfish, broomtail groupers and massive cubera snapper. It’s not unusual for these monsters to weigh upwards of 60 pounds yet still ascend the water column to strike on the surface. Roosterfish are in an especially catchable mood after a cool evening’s rain floods the estuary with fresh baits. Inshore or offshore, all are ripe for the catching, and captains of FishingNosara have posted excellent catches ever since the season started. Right off the bat, angler Brian Stafford, of Jacksonville, Fla. and his fellow firefighters nabbed a big batch of dorado on the 32-foot Wanderer. Catching these big beasts on the first day of the season is a great sign of what we imagine will be a “fishtastic” 2019 season. It’s always a great time be thankful for friends, family and the blessings in life, but with Christmas Day right around the corner, it is the right time to give the gift of fishing. If you have a youngster in the family, get them a tackle box and a starter reel. If you are already an avid angler, remember that Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals are great for expanding your arsenal. And, if you are ready to challenge yourself to catch the baddest fish on the planet, come on down to Nosara and pay us a visit.

urf Expo’s Bluewater category launched last year as an examination of the crossover occurring between fishing brands and the larger market of coastal life. Since then, the show has become a must-attend event for fishing and boating retailers savvy enough to stay ahead of the trends water-loving consumers crave. The world’s largest and longest-running board and watersports show has packed the floor of its Bluewater—offshore, inshore and freshwater fishing—category headed into the Jan. 10-12 show at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. Popular brands traditionally associated with the waterman and outdoor sporting lifestyle will show off their latest and greatest, giving retailers a hands-on first-look at the products that will drive the industry in 2019. Included in the Bluewater category are top brands like Bluewater sponsor Hell’s Bay Boatworks, Yeti, Otterbox, Fish Hippie, AFTCO, Guy Harvey, Marsh Wear, 5Fin, Salt Life, Bimini Bay, Hooked Soul, Heybo, XTRATUF, Dry Case, Bluewater Gear, Wave Life, Sunday Afternoons and more. Many of fishing’s big hitters will be there along with a huge contingent of brands that appeal to the on-the-water lifestyle. With the crossover evident in today’s marketplace, retailers and outfitters who target only their small niche are missing out on a powerful revenue source. Why sell to just the hardcore boater and angler when you could be unloading cool merchandise on the angler as well as his entire family? “The Bluewater section offers the opportunity for buyers to see the latest in trends for fishing and boating apparel and accessories at a time when retailers can leave their store,” said Kenneth Andres, with Surf Expo. “With our confluence from southern California, the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast, the Southeast, the Caribbean, Central and South America, this is a trend-setting show.” The economy is churning and consumer spending and confidence levels are higher than they have been for almost 20 years. Surf Expo is a timely opportunity for retailers to preview product for what promises to be a very busy spring season for fishing, boating and watersports retailers. “January is the best time to preview and order new product lines before the season starts,” said Andres. “Retailers can get out of their shops to talk with exhibitors and see and touch the product before they order, plus take advantage of early incentive discounts.” And for the angling marketplace, where there may be a down season but there is no off-season, Surf Expo will feature an array of exhibitors offering at-once product to fill the racks. This is an opportunity to stock the hottest new gear before the competition has even seen it. The show features more than 2,500 booths of apparel and hardgoods and a full line-up of special events, including fashion shows, awards ceremonies, education and demos. Average buyer and exhibitor turnout exceeds 28,600 attendees per show. And it’s a trade-only show, which eliminates the hubbub and massage-chair hawkers of open-to-the-public trade shows. Surf Show is intentionally held during retail down time—the January restocking period for outdoor-sports retailers—so it is a marketplace to get business done in a laid-back atmosphere. “When people come to the Surf Expo for the first time, they notice the relaxed, cool atmosphere. It’s that lifestyle we all buy into, and there are a lot of beautiful people at a surf show,” said Andres. “It’s just a great place to be if you’re in the watersports industry. If you’ve got a fishing, boating, or watersports shop, come check it out for yourself.” For more information, on January’s Surf Expo in Orlando, go to www. surfexpo.com.

very few years a new technique explodes on the bass fishing scene. Many of these trends just fade away, but some endure and become a part of every bass angler’s arsenal. The technique of the moment is the Ned rig. It is excellent for big numbers of spotted bass and smallmouths. It’ll catch largemouths, too. And it really shines when the fishing gets tough. On post-frontal days in winter, when bass are deep on vertical structure, it’s time to rig up a Ned and go to work. It is the perfect technique when bass are looking for a meal that is small and slow moving. A Ned rig is a miniature soft-plastic stick bait threaded on a light 1/8- to 1/32-ounce mushroom-style jighead. A drop of superglue holding the 3- to 5-inch worm to the jighead works wonders for making this rig durable. When fishing at winter depths, light line should be matched with a light spinning rod with a supple tip. Go as light as you dare, with 4- to 8-pound-test braid finished off with a fluorocarbon leader. When fish are active, a Ned worked steadily along the bottom is deadly. When they are sluggish, it’s better to let the jig sit on the bottom, allowing the bait’s vertical tail to do the work with the slightest shake of the rod tip. It’s not the most exciting way to fish, but it catches fish—sometimes when nothing else will.

hose who have seen his show “Man Fire Food” will recognize Roger Mooking as the iconic host of what has become the ultimate look at extreme outdoor or fire/smoke based cooking. Each week Roger introduces us to passionate and inventive outdoor cooking aficionados and an array of epic custom-built apparatuses designed to cook everything from 200-pound sturgeon to whole cows on a massive homemade spit. Roger’s visits give us insight into the innovative extremes outdoor cooks utilize in their pursuit of perfection. If you’re an outdoor cooking enthusiast, “Man Fire Food” is a must-watch program. We recently caught up with Roger to discuss the show’s success and rich content. CAM: Roger, your show has become a must-watch series for anyone who mans a grill. Why do you think your show has become so popular? Roger: Over the course of the last 7 seasons, we’ve seen an amazing array of outdoor and flame-inspired cooking devices and techniques featured on the show. If you love outdoor cooking, then you’re probably going to like the show. People just love being outside with loved ones. Backyard barbecues have been a longstanding tradition; in fact, you could say that tradition may even date back to the most primitive use of fire itself. There’s also something very special about slowing down and taking the time it demands to tend a hypnotizing fire and be immersed in the full experience, and getting to eat at the end of that entire adventure. The smells, sounds, sights of nature and breaking the hectic pace that a lot of us live at… it’s needed. CAM: So, you think cooking outdoors is somehow satisfying a primal urge? Roger: When I look back at some of the massive cuts of meat that have been prepared on previous episodes, it does seem like fire and food is primal, and I think we would all have to agree that cooking with wood, coals or heated rocks bridges a gap that is satisfying to those primal instincts.

CAM: What can we expect to see in future episodes? Roger: Humans all over the globe have been cooking with fire for many millennia now, and cultures all over the world have different ways of cooking with fire. I would like to explore extending the borders of the show to feature more places outside of the U.S. CAM: What advice would you offer the average outdoor cook? Roger: Just to enjoy the whole experience. I think the average outdoor cook is a more experienced cook, or else they would be a novice indoor cook. It takes a different level of attention to detail and mindfulness to cook outdoors because you have to deal with many other variables like wind, rain, keeping the fire going, how hot or cool is the fire, what are the hotspots, how much wood/charcoal do I need to add at a particular stage, bugs trying to get you, and all sorts of other things that you simply don’t have to worry about in a modern day North American kitchen with electricity and good shelter. Also, use the smoke as a seasoning advantage. You don’t need to add all kinds of stuff if you start with a freshly caught fish, some salt and a bit of good wood smoke; the work is already done, you just have to make sure you don’t get in the way or don’t burn the darn thing. It’s the magic of simplicity. CAM: How do you select the places that we see on the show? Roger: There is a very dedicated but small team of amazing people who find, research and vet all the potential locations for “Man Fire Food.” The winning candidates have endured hours of interviews and a barrage of questions as exhaustive as possible. The variables are so unimaginable to the viewer, and if we all do our jobs right, you have no idea how much work went into what looks so simple on TV. We’re always interested in looking at unique “Man Fire Food” subject matters. If any of your readers think they qualify, they should email: Contact@rogermooking.com. “Man Fire Food’s” new season premiered Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 9 p.m. on The Cooking Channel.

FISH & FISHING

m

Feeding Strategies MARK SOSIN What appears obvious may be deceiving. Most anglers erroneously believe that when predators corner a hapless school of baitfish, they simply open their mouths and swim through the prey, gorging themselves in the process. It doesn’t happen that way. A predator must isolate and attack one specific victim at a time. That’s not always an easy task. A frantic school of baitfish sensing predators can appear as a shimmering mass of silver with each individual member of the school constantly changing position. Selecting a tasty morsel to ingest can frustrate even the most sophisticated gamefish. That’s one reason why you’ll find predators lurking under a pod of bait. The instant their intended prey strays from the pack, they strike. When you think about it, you can understand that any gamefish searches for a victim that is isolated, disabled or looks different from the others. Feeding is a tradeoff. Success centers on expending as little energy as possible for the food value received. Unsuccessfully chasing prey for long distances keeps a predator lean, hungry, and tends to slow it down. The easiest way to get a strike when you locate a school of baitfish starts with a cast into the middle of the school. It doesn’t matter whether you are fishing an artificial lure or a natural bait. The retrieve should work your offering toward the fringes of the school in basically the same direction in which the school is swimming or at a 45-degree angle to the basic direction. As your bait or lure eases toward the edge of the school, it is easier for a predator to isolate. And, it looks slightly different than the baitfish in the school. Some live bait fishermen squeeze a minnow before casting

92

it or drifting it so that it will be disabled. Clipping a fin or two also impairs swimming motion. The injured fish will have trouble swimming, and that means it will send out vibrations that attract the attention of predators. These frantic movements to obtain equilibrium frequently trigger the strike. Even during the anticipated feast of locating a school of baitfish, certain factors come into play. As water temperatures drop, a predator will not pursue its prey as fast and as far as it would in warmer water. When you are fishing a chum slick and fish are feeding on the chum, it is much more effective to fish an offering without retrieving it. A dead drift works just fine. I’ve seen that produce inshore and offshore including tuna and sailfish. I once had an opportunity to watch scientists monitor the behavior of a school of bluefish in a massive aquarium as they attacked a school of minnows. By chance, I focused on a minnow that did not move, even when attacked by a bluefish four times. Each time, the bluefish broke off the attack because the minnow did not behave as it should. On the fifth pass, the minnow moved and it was eaten faster than you can read this sentence. Finally, if you are trolling and see a school of small fish on the surface, approach the school slowly so as not to scare them. Ease alongside the school and work the fringes or establish a position ahead of the baitfish. If you prefer to cast, keep the boat away from the school and make the cast into the school. As you retrieve your offering and it begins to clear the fringes of the school, you should get a strike.
