Dear Readers, This edition of the magaine that you are reading is put together by our local franchisee co-publisher. Your co-publisher’s contact information is shown in the directory adjacent to this article. We currently publish 38 separate editions of this magazine each month throughout the Continental United States, the Bahamas and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Our plan is to continue growing and to continue adding locations. If you love the outdoors and have ever considered owning your own business, you owe it to yourself to take a look at our franchise opportunities. Our franchise publishing model will enable you to make money doing what you love, being involved in the outdoor/marine industry. You don’t need to have prior publishing experience. We train you on how to do that. What you do need is a love of the outdoors and a somewhat adventurous spirit. Opening a new business is exciting and, yes, it requires hard work and commitment. But, once you bring this magazine to your community you will find it to be very rewarding and you will have created one of the best jobs and career opportunities that any angler could ever imagine. If you’re like us, owning your own fishing magazine may be an opportunity for you to be involved in an industry that you’re passionate about. Imagine never dreading to go to work but rather being excited about sharing the message of your magazine. Our ideal strategic growth would have franchise opportunities in the following locations, however, we have found that nearly any area that has an avid fishing community can be a good location for it’s own fishing magazine. MOTOR REVIEW Honda Marine Debuts New
BF4, BF5 and BF6 4-stroke Engines
Portability, performance and reliability are the hallmarks of Honda Marine’s new and redesigned portable engine models, the BF4, BF5 and BF6 4-stroke outboards. Honda Marine debuts new engines with the BF4 and BF6 models, and redesigns the legendary BF5 models. Packed with the latest technology from Honda, the 127cc 4-stroke, single cylinder engines offer boaters the choice of four horsepower (BF4), five horsepower (BF5) or six horsepower (BF6). All three new engines are available with either a short (15 inch/38 cm) or long (20 inch/51 cm) shaft. “The new Honda BF4, BF5 and BF6 engines are easy to start, easy to stop and easy to carry. The new four-stroke Honda Marine engines are best-in-class performers. They are the right size for the right purpose,” said Mark DiPietro, senior manager, Honda Marine. “The new Honda BF4, BF5 and BF6 marine engines feature a new internal fuel tank and new motor mounts to run quietly and smoothly, while delivering the longest continuous running time.”
The new Honda Marine BF4, BF5 and BF6 engines provide consumers four main features—portability, performance, reliability and comfort. Portability A combination of light weight (roughly 60 pounds) and new carrying handle design make the Honda BF4, BF5 and BF6 marine engines easy to transport and store. The tiller handle fully folds out of the way, making storage options even more convenient. Performance The engines integrate a 1.5-liter, large capacity internal fuel tank, which delivers the longest continuous running time in their class—more than 40 minutes at wide-open throttle. In addition, the Honda BF5 and BF6 4-stroke engines can be connected to an external fuel tank for longer journeys. Consumers have the choice of an additional three different propeller options for the style that best fits their boating. Reliability Honda Marine’s new BF4, BF5 and BF6 models share the same, proven onecylinder, 127 cubic centimeter engine block and benefit from Honda’s 4-stroke engine technology. In case of an oil pressure drop, a new, low-oil alert system will automatically limit the engine speed to 2,300 rpm to protect the engine. Comfort The new Honda BF4, BF5 and BF6 portable engines feature a host of new technologies and features that consumers will appreciate. • A new decompression mechanism helps make all three new Honda Marine engines easy to pull start, regardless of the engine temperature. • One-push stop switch serves to shut down the engine with no chance of the engine re-starting. • The Honda Marine BF4, BF5 and BF6 portable engines feature redesigned rubber motor mounts that reduce vibration in all rpm ranges and reduce engine noise. • The BF4, BF5 and BF6 are available with an optional charging system with a capacity of 6 Amps at 12 Volts to power consumer demands for electronic devices. With a starting U.S. manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $1,875, the BF4 is a compact, lightweight engine with excellent low- to mid-range power. The new Honda BF5 delivers new features and technology at a starting price of $2,025. The starting U.S. MSRP of the new Honda Marine BF6 is $2,150. For more information, see marine.honda.com.

Using a Smartphone Isn’t Always Smart On The Water Submitted by Sea Tow
P
eople rarely go anywhere on land without their smartphones anymore, and it has become increasingly common to see boaters using cell phones when they’re out on coastal and inland waters as well. That’s fine—as long as your boat is also equipped with a VHF radio, one of the most important pieces of safety equipment you can have on board. “Your cell phone could die or you could drop it overboard. We recommend people take a 5-watt handheld VHF along on their boat, at a minimum, to use as their primary form of communication on the water,” said Capt. Ed Schrader, owner of Sea Tow Hampton Roads, Va., which serves the busy waters of Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake Bay. “It’s better to have a 25-watt VHF mounted at the helm, however.”
N AU T I C A L T E R M
Capt. Sammy Royal, owner of Sea Tow Horseshoe Beach, Fla., which covers a rural stretch of the Gulf Coast on Florida’s Panhandle from Waccasassa to Keaton Beach, said boaters can’t rely on their smartphones always “having bars” in his area. “Cell phone service is very limited here. There are small fishing villages along the coast that are nine or 10 miles apart with nothing in between,” he said − making it essential to have a VHF on board. Another important benefit to using a VHF radio rather than a cell phone is that if you ever find yourself needing assistance, more than one listener can hear and respond to your call for help. “With a VHF, you are able to communicate with more people quickly on the water. Whether it’s Sea Tow, the Coast Guard, or a nearby boater, everybody’s going to hear what you’ve got to say,” said Capt. Schrader, adding, “The USCG’s Rescue 21 System also has VHF direction-finding capabilities and can obtain a relatively good location as soon as you click your mic and place that distress call. This helps greatly if you do not know your location or don’t have time to provide it.” Of course, a VHF radio can’t help you in an emergency situation if it’s not working properly. Both Captains advise using Sea Tow’s free Automated Radio Check service to quickly and easily check that your boat’s VHF is in operational prior to setting out on the water. To use the service, simply tune the VHF to the local Automated Radio Check channel, key the mic, and request a radio check. You will hear an automated response and then the call will be played back to you, confirming that your VHF radio is working and allowing you to assess transmission strength, a crucial safety check. Sea Tow Horseshoe Beach offers the Automated Radio Check service on VHF channels 26 and 27. Sea Tow Hampton Roads provides the service on channel 28. To find the Sea Tow Automated Radio Check channel in your boating area, visit https://www.seatow. com/tools-and-education/automated-radio-check. WWW.AWLGRIP.COM PARKIT360 FORCE ELECTRIC TRAILER DOLLY
WWW.MILLENNIUMMARINE.COM
If you own a boat, you know the stress of backing your trailered pride and joy into a tight space. With this in mind, we took it upon ourselves to take Parkit360’s Force 10K electric trailer dolly for a test spin. Right off the bat, we were impressed. Assembly was easy, and by connecting the trailer’s power harness to the Force, we were able to control the trailer’s brakes with the Smart Brake Control System, which provides control and safety on a steep grade. Also the Bosch-designed electric motor supplied more than enough power to maneuver with little to no effort on the part of the user. The heavy-duty 4’-wide tires maintained traction on concrete as well as gravel and even in wet grass when loaded. The Force dolly proved its functionality regardless of terrain, and that could come in super handy for those parking boats, campers or anything else with a trailer ball where the concrete ends. But the most striking feature of the Force electric trailer dolly was how easy it made maneuvering the boat. With precise and easy-to-use controls, all the stress was taken out of navigating tight corners and turns in forward and reverse. We put the boat into spots we wouldn’t even attempt using a truck. Built of quality materials, powder-coated and compact enough to fit in the trunk of an SUV, Parkit360’s electric trailer dollies are a great tool for anyone who pulls a trailer.
Spider King rod holders make your fishing more productive. A modular Spider King rod holder system lets a fisherman “rig, cast and relax” with as many as eight lines in the water. And the same system can also keep a drink and tackle on hand. The plates attach to the bottom of the boat seat using existing factory holes, therefore there is no need to drill. Accessories include rod holders, drink holder, tackle holder and tackle/drink holder. We also offer outriggers by the pair in single, double and a four-rod holder gunnel-mount spider rig. Spider King products are made in the USA of 100 percent marine grade aluminum and they are powder coated so there is no maintenance or cleaning. Most items are available in black, white and argent silver. Visit the Spider King website to view all of their fine products.

MARINETECH TROLLMASTER PRO 3+ Trolling is not as fun or effective for the guy tied to the motor. The world’s leading remote throttle control for gas-powered auxillary outboards is now available with wireless remote control. TROLLMaster Pro 3+ is an angler’s dream, allowing the angler to maintain optimum trolling speeds to within 1/10 mph. Slow trolling anglers understand that boat speed can make or break the day’s catch. TROLLMaster maximizes the time spent in the ‘sweet spot.’ Catch more fish with the freedom of movement that wireless control offers. Additional features include momentary ‘max throttle’ burst function for quick response or for ‘fluttering’ baits; idle/resume speed, left and right turn push button control. The hand-held remote is ergonomically designed for hours
of comfort. The remote is water resistant and comes with detachable lanyard and backlit LCD display for positive visibility in dark conditions. Engine specific throttle/hardware kits fit neatly under the cowling and are available to fit most brands of kicker motors. TROLLMaster also allows the angler to control the auxiliary 4 stroke’s steering with the addition of Panther’s Electro Steer drive units. The Panther T-4 and T-5 Electro Steer units are designed to remotely steer ‘kicker’ motors from anywhere on the boat. They mount on the tilt-tube and can be installed in minutes. Electro Steer units are available in fresh and saltwater models.

Mercury Unrolls Advanced New Features For Joystick Piloting
F
or almost 80 years, Mercury Marine has been the world’s leading manufacturer of recreational marine engines. The broad range of marine propulsion spans from 2.5hp to 1,700hp in Mercury’s new racing sterndrive engine. Over the past decade, Mercury has invested more than $800 million in research and development and expansion into its global headquarters in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. That investment has allowed the company to grow its employee base from 1,400 in 2009 to more than 3,200 in 2017—which includes more than 700 engineers. The investment has also allowed Mercury to continue its cadence of averaging one new product launch every six weeks. Today, Mercury is more than an engine company. It’s a marine propulsion solution company that not only has a portfolio of engines for any boater, but also the technology to enhance the boating experience. Mercury’s ecosystem of technology is unmatched in the marine industry and features Joystick Piloting for outboards or inboards, SkyHook virtual anchoring, Vessel View mobile and Active Trim. All four products work together with the engine to create the perfect experience on the water and allow boaters to Go Boldly. The latest innovation from Mercury is an enhancement for Mercury

Joystick-equipped vessels. Designed for convenient purchase as downloadable content (DLC) from Mercury’s GoFree store, Skyhook Advanced Features provides Joystick vessels with even better positioning control in specific situations. Boaters and anglers who love the way Mercury’s GPS-enabled Skyhook lets their vessel maintain a steady position while waiting for a bridge opening or hold over a reef, will be sure to appreciate Skyhook Advanced Features. New Skyhook Advanced Features include: • Heading Adjust provides Joystick operators with the ability to adjust the heading lock in 1- and 10-degree increments while SkyHook is active, making vessel control even more precise. • BowHook can be used to unlock heading and just maintain position, allowing the boat to point in whatever direction the winds and currents dictate. This feature is useful when a locked-in heading is not necessary. • DriftHook lets the operator maintain heading and unlock the position of the vessel allowing winds and currents to move the vessel along. Adjustments of 1- and 10-degree increments can be made while drifting when bundled with Heading Adjust. In addition, Mercury continues to advance its Vessel View mobile technology and roll it out around the world. The VesselView Mobile app instantly provides users access to their boat’s SmartCraft digital data in the palm of their hand. SmartCraft® is a fully integrated suite of digital technologies, including marine gauges, sensors, vessel systems and computercontrolled features, that gives users a higher level of control over their boat’s propulsion and electrical systems. Now, with Mercury Marine’s VesselView Mobile, users can see SmartCraft engine data right on the screen of their mobile device. The app also includes useful new features such as Maintenance Reminders, Mapping, Performance Summary, and Fault Code Diagnostics. VesselView Mobile makes preparing for and spending a day on the water easier, safer and more enjoyable by letting users perform functions from their mobile device. in the forward section—which can also be converted to an optional livewell. The helm’s reversible seat has a cooler as its base, perfect for keeping beverages or snacks iced. The boat’s aft section features two jump seats flanking a recirculating livewell. Standard power is Mercury Marine’s 115 HP 4-Stroke outboard, with an optional 150 HP 4-Stroke also available. Anglers can also add a bow trolling motor, pedestal bow fishing seat, and an additional livewell forward of the helm console. “This boat is our largest center console model yet, and an affordable way to get out and enjoy family fishing, cruising or any number of dayboat activities,” said Bayliner’s President, Keith Yunger. “Its roominess and versatility are exceptional. When you factor in the price, it’s a value you’ll be hard pressed to beat anywhere.”
SPECIFICATIONS Continuing on the success of its innovative Element M-Hull design, Bayliner has created the Element F21, its latest and largest self-bailing center console design to-date with . The Element F21 is built for family fishing and other day-boat activities with the same clean, open layout the Element F-Series is becoming known for. It gives anglers remarkable stability provided by the M-Hull, and it has a slightly deeper entry V than its couterparts, a feature boaters interested in this size range will appreciate. The F21’s bow features an anchor locker, and two large bow storage lockers perfect for keeping a variety of gear secure. The helm has plenty of space for optional electronics and includes a storage compartment

FREEDIVING – TRY IT!
W
hile visiting a friend of mine about 15 years ago, I noticed a book on his coffee table. It was called “Bluewater Hunting and Freediving” by Terry Maas, and it had the photo of a diver holding a bluefin tuna on the front cover. I already enjoyed hunting on scuba for groupers and snappers in my backyard, but the thought of spearing a tuna intrigued me to no end… and the thought of freediving also caught my attention. I had a hard time finding like-minded friends to dive with at first, as freediving was not a mainstream activity in Florida at the time. After researching a bit, I found a freediving school called Performance Freediving International and signed up for a course. I also found a freedive spearfishing club, which consisted of about 10 guys and no women. To this day, I give the same advice to anyone who wants to learn: “Take a class from a freedive agency, and join a local club so you can make friends and perhaps find a mentor.” Before the class, I had never tried to hold my breath while holding still in a pool—called static apnea. I was predicting that I would be a one-minute diver, but after some instruction I held my breath for four minutes. Most importantly, I learned how to avoid a “blackout” and how to rescue a blacked-out diver. We were taught the importance of the buddy system and one-up/one-down diving. While these classes will at least double your breath-hold time, learning the safety aspects is even more important. Fifteen years later, I can look back and say that learning to freedive opened a whole new underwater world for me. Now that I’m an oldster in the sport, I marvel at the growth rate, the number of agencies offering classes, the number of clubs in the area, and the large number of people that are in those clubs. It’s wonderful to see so many young people enjoying the sport. Lest I give the impression that freediving is a young people’s activity or something that super-athletes do, let me debunk that myth. I have met overweight smokers that were very good at it, and I’ve been diving with 80 year olds who were still enjoying it. Freediving is for anyone

who is willing to give Photo by Joe Marino it a try. Whether it’s to spearfish, experience the ocean in a different way, or simply find your inner-self at the bottom of the ocean, it’s an activity that anyone can enjoy. It’s a natural, satisfying and spiritual experience to hold one’s breath and become one with the ocean. If you have the slightest interest, do not be intimidated; it’s actually very easy. Just give it a try… you might like it! P.S. Terry Maas just came out with an updated digital version of the book, and I am honored that he featured my worldrecord yellowfin tuna. Angler/Navigator Comfort Zones By Tobin Strickland

WHOLESALE CUSTOMERS WANTED! The Best American Hooks & Weights For Better #Fishing
id you know that one person can be both “angler” and “navigator” and have two almost entirely different comfort zones? Comfort zone in this case is that area around us where we feel comfortable and extends to the point where a person experiences being encroached upon or violated. The angler’s comfort zone involves a combination of safety, tranquility, or a sense of being “away from it all,” as well as the desire to pursue undisturbed fish. Typically most anglers enjoy a circular-shaped comfort zone with a radius of about 300 to 500 feet. If another angler or a navigator encroaches in that area, that angler feels violated, robbed even. Don’t we all feel like this? No matter how we choose to get to the water, whether we’re bank fishing, wading, kayaking, or getting there with a boat of any size, shape, or speed, we all desire to experience pursuing undisturbed fish, peacefully, with the hope that we’ll catch the day’s target species. That same person’s navigator comfort zone is shaped differently but is about the same distance depending on the speed of travel. The navigator’s comfort zone is constructed from a subset of the angler’s comfort zone, and it may include how fast to get there, how far, and the most direct route to the destination. Also, factors like comfort while riding in surface chop or rough conditions, fuel consumption, and safety come into play. Funny thing here is that all anglers become navigators with a different navigator comfort zone the instant the paddle or key is touched. The same angler or person can have two entirely different comfort zones! As an angler, that person feels comfortable with a generally circular shaped comfort zone, and as a navigator they feel comfortable with a more narrow, rectangular comfort zone. The navigator’s comfort zone is about 300 to 500 feet long and oddly enough only about 150 yards wide, split 75 yards right/75 yards left. For the navigator, there is also an aversion to turning while navigating, opting for the most direct straight path if available. Once we each as anglers recognize the two different shapes and sizes of the comfort zones, we can then begin to adjust how we navigate to avoid encroaching into the comfort zone of other angler/ navigators. If the navigator can overcome the aversion to turning by momentarily slowing down to swing wide of an angler’s comfort zone when possible, or choose routes that avoid angler’s comfort zones entirely, it results in a much greater on-the-water experience since he too will also be the angler once he reaches the next fishing location. The point of all this is realizing that each of us change our own comfort zones as we change from angler to navigator throughout the day. We’re the same person with two different comfort zones according to what we’re doing at the time, either being an angler or navigating. Tobin created TroutSupport.com. Understand your water.

Pregnant Woman Lands Record Muskie
S
everal months pregnant, Tessa Cosens, 26, of Hagerstown, Md., has been kept off the water recently because of morning sickness. She made the best of one of her infrequent days on the water May 6 by catching the Maryland state record muskie. The big muskellunge, frequently referred to as the fish of 1,000 casts, weighed 32.5 pounds and was caught from the bank on the upper Potomac River in northwestern Maryland. Cosens caught the more than 4-foot-long beast on a 7-foot muskie rod and a double spinner. Once the paperwork clears with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, it will go into the record books as the state’s largest muskie caught in non-tidal waters. It replaces a 2011 record fish that was also caught from the Potomac. That fish, caught by Kenneth Files, weighed 31 pounds, 12 ounces. The IGFA all-tackle world record muskie weighed 67 pounds, 8 ounces. It was caught from Wisconsin’s Lake Court Oreilles by Cal Johnson in 1949. According to a Maryland DNR press release, it took 15 minutes for Cosens to land her big muskie. “All the guys around me stopped fishing and looked at me,” Cosens said. “There is no other fish that fights like a muskie.” To help determine the age of the fish, Cosens is donating a sample of the muskie’s scales and cleithrum – a large bone above the gills – to the department for further analysis.

The Heavyweight Experience of Alaska Saltwater Fishing By Christopher Batin
I
t’s easy to understand why anglers delight in preparing for an Alaska fishing expedition. Some of the thrill is the anticipation, in getting gear and tackle ready, the big reels, 12-ounce and larger jigs, and huge circle hooks that have been honed to hypodermic-grade sharpness. It’s ensuring the cooler is properly marked with your name and address to transport the fillets you’ll be taking home, and most importantly, the arm curls and circuit training you’re doing. The workouts are necessary, and it’s easy to see why. Alaska saltwater fishing is not for the weak of arm or back. Halibut get big in Alaska, with fish reaching weights of 400 pounds, and lengths of 9 feet long. Even the 100-pounders you’re most likely to catch can slug it out through 300 feet of pump-and-lift jabs, and rocket back to the bottom to start all over again for round two. There’s no giving up, no taking a breather for more than a few seconds. Once you are engaged, you fight to your limit. Your arm will get numb at times, your hand pulses with fatigue, and your back quivers in spasmodic tension, but the smile frozen on your face says it all. This is saltwater fishing as good as it gets. While I enjoy slugging it out with halibut, I also enjoy a dukefest with Alaska’s other saltwater species. Lingcod get to 60-plus pounds, and usually attack the rockfish I’m reeling up. With their sharp rows of teeth and sinister look, these water wolves of the deep are among the tastiest fish to catch, as well as the forage they feed on; the 4- to 20-pound rockfish of various species, which are among the best-tasting fish in the north country. But many anglers will want to jig for the five species of Pacific salmon: kings to 70 pounds, coho salmon to 20, and 4- to 8-pound pink salmon. While they might be the smallest of the Pacific salmon, ocean-bright pinks can max out an 8-weight fly rod. Best of all, odd-numbered years see the return of millions of fish, when creeks and rivers burst at the seams with their numbers. In Valdez alone, as many as 11 million salmon have returned in past years. Anglers delight in catching them along the shoreline near the Solomon Gulch hatchery. There are many places to use as a base camp to start your excursion. At the end of the Richardson Highway, Tim Bouchard of Valdez Outfitters likes fishing for big halibut on the outer rim of Prince William Sound, where it meets the abysmal Gulf of Alaska and its continental shelf dropoff to 14,000 feet. Worry not, Bouchard fishes hotspots like Montague Island, where the big fish feed in the shallow 60- to 120-foot depths. He guided his client to catch the 2016 Valdez Halibut Derby winner last year with a 270-pound fish. For a taste of home-cooking mixed with a professional fishing lodge, Petersburg Sportfishing offers prime fishing on the Inside Passage in the seldom-fished waters near Petersburg. Anglers can opt for boat rentals for do-it-yourself fishing or guided saltwater fishing for salmon, halibut,
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 1
rockfish and lingcod. This family-run business offers not only fishing, but a variety of adventures and tips on enjoying the many fishing and area glacier attractions, as well as prime bear viewing and some fabulous cutthroat and rainbow trout fishing. Of course, Kodiak Island offers superb deepsea fishing, bordering the Aleutian trench. Huge halibut migrate from waters bordering these dropoffs and into the shallower food-rich shorelines of Kodiak and Afognak islands. While most fish range from 30 to 100 pounds, fish to 300 pounds and heavier have been caught off Kodiak. Fish this size measure 8 feet in length. Kodiak anglers fish shallow water, from 60 to 180 feet. King salmon fishing is among the best in Alaska saltwater and runs best from April through early mid July. The best thing about fishing Kodiak is short travel time. The best hotspots are often accessed in less than an hour, which offers more time for fishing. Also, because of the remote location of the lodge, there is little if any sportfishing competition. In Prince William Sound, Alaska Wilderness Outfitters offers a floating cabin for do-it-yourselfers who know how to catch salmon, halibut, rockfish and lingcod in nearby waters. Each of the four, fully equipped wannigans includes a full kitchen, crab traps boats and motors and directions on where the fishing is best. They’ll transport you to the cabins from Cordova, to one of several bays protected from big-water weather. They also offered guided options in some of the most salmon-rich waters of south-central Alaska. Co-owner Katie Prijatel said guests clean and pack their catch in coolers. Alaska Wilderness Outfitters flies in daily to pick up the fish and drop off more ice. Then the fish is vacuum packed, boxed and frozen for the trip home. Chris Batin is editor of The Alaska Angler, and producer of the instructional DVD, “Underwater Secrets of Halibut, Rockfish and Lingcod.” For more than 40 years, he has run The Alaska Angler Information Service, which is a one-on-one consultation that helps anglers plan their Alaska fishing adventures. I’m So Excited... Must Read! THE ANGLER MAGAZINE OF UPSTATE NY HAS ATTAINED something so cool for our readers that I had to tell you in my bio on PAGE 1. We were given a participant marshal seat for The Bassmaster’s Elite Series on The St. Lawrence River (July20-23) to gift to an Upstate NY Anglers through a giveaway. The Elite Series is the top level of professional Bass fishing and features the “World’s Top Bass Fishermen”. These national professionals love to compete right here in Upstate NY, fishermen’s paradise. Each professional angler’s boat is manned by an ESPN camera crew and a marshal, whose primary role is to maintain the integrity of the “Elite Series” rules. The marshal seat was offered to The Angler at a strategy session at Seaway Smokehouse in Waddington, NY. The Village of Waddington who hosts the highest-level fishing contest inside a 4-day long river festival, www.waddingtonpartyinthepark.com. The event organizers wanted to reach out to the grass-roots readers of The Angler Magazine to invite the Upstate NY angling community up for a wonderful summer weekend. Explore or re-visit this majestic river and learn top notch tactics from the fishing elite, right here in our backyard. That is the biggest talking point with bass fishermen that I have shared this marshal seat opportunity with, the lucky winner will have access to leading professionals’ tactics and adjustments during the contest. The organizers wanted to expose the St. Lawrence to as many NY Anglers’ and wanted a winner of this marshal seat to be a local Upstate fisherman. They gave us discretion to form a contest that accomplished both, with a desire to highlight the beauty of our world-famous River. We consulted with a local grass roots fishing organization, the Underground Fishing League, who is a regular contributor to The Angler. The UFL members heavily fish the river near Alexandria Bay and know the river well. Together we concocted a contest that will gift
a lucky “local” angler the marshal seat while showcasing the beauty of the St. Lawrence. This is how you can win this ultimate prize. Visit Alexandria Bay during the month of June and receive a raffle entry to be a participant marshal July 20-23 for Bassmaster “Elite Series” in Waddington, NY on the St. Lawrence River. Entries will be available at participating Alex Bay Chamber of Commerce merchants. Go to www.visitalexbay. org for participating merchants and contest guidelines. Winner may gift the prize to a marshal candidate of their choice, must be 18 to marshal. So get out and enjoy one of the world’s most beautiful and historic rivers and enter this cool giveaway. One entry per person. The winner will be drawn at noon on 4th of July at the docks of Uncle Sam Boat Tours by Ron Thomson, of Uncle Sam’s Boat Tours. How American is that!!

IRISH KNOTS FISHING MEXICO BAY REPORT BY CAPT. CHRIS YARD Since my last report, the waters of Lake Ontario continue to rise, many of our marinas, businesses and residences continue to struggle with water issues (flooding etc). I’d like to personally wish everyone the best as we struggle through the next month before the water levels are supposed to recede! With many of our state launches closed due to conditions, or the difficulty to access them without waders I recommend you check social media or make a call before trailering up to fish. The amount of floating debris is also extremely dangerous, stay focused and be kind with your wake while running near the shoreline. Late April and early May had us searching the shorelines for browns in Mexico Bay with little reward. The lack of Browns in the bay had us targeting Lake Trout offshore to keep the rods moving. The Lake Trout fishing has continued to be consistent with many weighing in the high teens and up into the twenty plus pound range. Cowbells, BW Products followed by meat or flies and mag spoons have been our go to! Bright Greens, Chartreuse and Blue Silver best combinations. I trailered Irish Knots to Olcott/ Wilson, NY for a week fishing some of their spring king and coho fishery. This was a great time as I haven’t fished the Western Basin in about 10 years… The Coho’s were plentiful and
good size; the kings and Lakers were feisty to say the least. Hard East winds slowed the fishing as the week went on but overall a great trip, should be a good fall when these fish head back to the Eastern Basin to run the mighty Salmon River! While I worked salmon in the Western Portion of Lake Ontario our Brown Trout fishery in the Eastern Basin had turned back on in full force! After speaking with fellow charter captains, rumor has it they have been entertaining clients with Browns and shallow Lake Trout in the 20-foot range. Good Luck fishing and follow Irish Knots Sport Fishing on Facebook and Instagram for up to date reports and pictures! Slainte Capt. Chris

WAYNE WEBER‘S TUG HILL/REDFIELD FISHING REPORT BY GUIDE WAYNE O THE FISHING IN OSWEGO RIGHT NOW IS AS GOOD AS it Redfield Area streams were stocked with rainbows and brook trout on April 26th and 27th. Just a few days later the rain started and blew out the streams. This is a plus because it spread the newly stocked fish before all the hatchery truck chasers could catch them out of the bridge pools. These streams have now dropped and cleared making them prime for fishing. The weather forecast is looking good to keep them that way. A second bonus to the rain we received is that the head waters are full and will provide good flow well into the summer.

If you are heading out looking to find some trout be prepared to cover some ground. The public access to the North Branch of the Salmon River on Route 17 is a good spot to do exactly that. Fly and gear fisherman will find multiple log jams and good pools downstream from the parking lot. Be prepared to do a bit of bushwhacking as there is not a great trail and it becomes over grown as the summer progresses. If you are coming to the Redfield area by way of Williamstown it would be worth your time to stop by the West Branch of Fish Creek off 17 and Lovers Lane. You will find a brush choked stream with some great log jams. The deeper holes created by these jams will likely produce brown trout in a size that will surely bring a smile to your face. I have not been out on the reservoir yet this season but I am hearing reports of some walleye being caught by anglers trolling crawler harnesses. Remember that walleye must be 18” to be kept on the reservoir. Work over the drop offs on the side of the channel. Electronics are a must as the depth changes drastically in a very short distance in many areas. Crappie are also being caught by the bridge and in some of the backsets. Many fish off the bridge at night throughout the summer for crappie. On the nights that they move in along the bridge the fishing is steady but many nights it is slow picking. By the time you read this we will be closing in on the opening of bass season. The Redfield Reservoir is a great body of water for bass fishing. It holds good numbers of small and largemouth bass. The clean cool water produces some of the nicest looking bass you will find in the Central New York area. Make sure to pick up the July and August issues of The Angler Magazine Upstate New York Addition for more information on fishing different sections of the Tug Hill.

SUNKEN TREASURES HENDERSON/ SACKETS/CHAUMONT BAY REPORT BY CAPT. GENE BOLTON FISHING IS STARTING TO HEAT UP ON THE EASTERN BASIN. The walleye opener was a pretty decent weekend with some decent catches throughout Black River Bay shimo Bay and Customs Bay. Trolling crankbaits and shallow divers 12 to 25 fow, later in the morning then moving out to the 30 -50 fow running deep-diving crankbaits has been successful and a lot of bigger fish have been landed out there the water temps are warming up very slow which will make great walleye fishing throughout this June. Brown trout action has heated up along the sands outside of Stoney Creek heading south. Good lake trout action out in the deep water off Stoney point. Browns are taking a mix of spoons and lake trout are taking cowbell Spin and glow and peanut Riggs. Extremely large lake trout or coming out early this year and should heat up as the thermocline sets up. Perch fishing has been really good throughout shimo Bay and out of Henderson Bay and Sackets Harbor as well Big Jack perch being caught over deeper water 15 to 25 feet as well as out 30 to 40 feet. Some decent pike fishing taking place along with the walleye fishing and good size northerns along with the walleye fishing. Congrats to the “Catfish Hunter” Eric Scordo for breaking the NYS Catfish record on Chaumont Bay in May.

The UFL Fishing Season BY MICHAEL SORRENTO A TRULY UNPRECEDENTED START TO THE 2017 FISHING season up at the St. Lawrence River where patience and concern for the river’s ecosystem reign paramount. The unrelenting rains of April combined with additional factors have led to the river’ water level being over three feet above normal. This has altered/delayed water temperature elevation, water clarity, spawning patterns, and species migration into various parts of the river. So anglers must embrace patience as water levels start to recede and riverfront owners repair and rebuild from all the flooding. Despite the unpredictable conditions, the UFL season had it’s first tournament to open up the walleye and northern pike season in early May. Michael Sorrento (Buffalo, NY) edged out Sammy Iraci (Buffalo,
Overlooking the St. Lawrence River
NY) by just half a pound to clinch the 2017 Spring Cleaning Classic, his 3rd “Classic” title in a row. Trolling 9’ of water with a suspending Rapala jerk bait (silver and blue) secured the tournament clinching northern pike for the fisherman UFL anglers call “maestro” for his league organization skills. And with a heavy heart, the UFL said goodbye to one of its local anglers Larry “the legend” Green (Oak Point, NY). Larry lost his battle to a chronic illness and will forever be remembered for his expertise in walleye trolling, memorable laugh, and engaging personality among the anglers. He was the first-mate of Jim Sorrento (Buffalo, NY), and their friendship will live well beyond their time together on the river. And the Spring Cleaning Classic will forever be known as the Larry Green Classic in his honor.

Bassmaster Elite Series 2017 LIKE I MENTIONED ON PAGE 1 OF OUR LOCAL SECTION, Bassmaster’s “Elite Series” is coming to Upstate NY this summer, what can be bigger in the fishing world than that. The Bassmaster Elite Series is the highest level of professional bass fishing tournaments. ESPN will be providing national television coverage. The Village of Waddington hosts a 4-day river festival called www.waddingtompartyinthepark. com to entertain, feed, and highlight the great fishing that attracted the event to our majestic river. They chose The Angler Magazine to reach out to YOU!! The fishermen of Upstate NY to join the festivities, and help support this big time fishing event. In 2015 when the “Elite Series” came to the St. Lawrence and Waddington they set an attendance record with over 30,000 spectators. This year they are poised to break that, and YOU can help make it happen. Bassmaster’s has returned due to the excellent fishing and the local participation. The marshal seat that we will help giveaway (see Uncle Sams ad on pg. 7) to a lucky Upstate NY angler is the ultimate in fan participation. The local organizers were insistent that we created a venue that showcased the river, and got a local angler in a marshal seat. While taking your cruise on Uncle Sams Boat Tours or visiting Alexandria Bay to enter into this once in a lifetime contest, take the short and pleasant drive up the river. Scout out arrangements for the Waddington Party and find some new fishing spots along the way. Make it a family event. In a time when we need to find interactive
outdoor events for our youth, the village party and Bassmaster event function perfectly, and provides great entertainment for everyone. Whether you make it a day trip, or stay over for one or several nights, we owe it to ourselves as Upstate NY outdoor enthusiasts to show our support by simply joining the fun!! What’s even better is the www. waddingtonpartyinthepark.com is FREE to all. The Angler Magazine has been fortunate to add over a dozen new sponsors in the St. Lawrence Region to provide our readers with fishing supplies and information, lodging, breakfast, lunch and dinner options for everyone’s budget. The Angler Magazine will continue to expand the coverage in the July issue featuring a national story on the great bass fishing the St. Lawrence River provides. Just last year a NY angler broke the NYS smallmouth bass record with an astounding 9 lb. specimen. No wonder why the Bassmaster’s is returning, and you should too. If you have been fortunate to fish this fabled jewel, you are familiar with not only top-notch small and largemouth bass fishing, the region is world renowned for musky, northern pike, all sorts of panfish and a walleye fishery that is virtually untapped. If you want to learn more about this wonderful river, this 4-day event and June long entry to win a marshal seat are a perfect venue to explore this historic region that truly provides a world-class fishery to boot. That’s why the Bassmaster “Elite Series” has returned. Let’s prove them right!!

ST. LAWRENCE RIVER REPORT BY CAPTAIN ED REYES, LET’S GO FISHING CHARTERS THE PIKE SEASON IS IN FULL SWING, SO GET OUT AND battle some of the toothiest fish in our freshwater, the Great Northern Pike. These fish will certainly give you the battle that most fisherman seek. When hooked they become some of the nastiest critters on the planet. The beauty of chasing after this species is that they are not that difficult to find during this time of the year. A little bit of knowledge and a little bit of research could put you into some good schools or even into a 10 to 15 pounder. First and foremost is water temp. Pike begin to spawn when the water temp hits 48 degrees. The males arrive at the spawning ground before their larger female counterparts. The males take a small break after they spawn, then go into a feeding mode to replenish themselves. These fish can be found in shallow weedy areas which they use for cover to ambush their prey. They can also be found foraging for food near shallow water where culverts and

water inlets are located. These fish have a high mortality rate. Although they have a rapid growth rate and are near the top of the freshwater food chain, these fish do not survive in high numbers when they are young. They are fed on by larger fish, diving birds, and even their own. When food is scarce the larger Pike feed on their own. They are a carnivorous bunch, and they are what they eat. Practice CPR. Catch, Photograph, and Release. The best thing to do is to photograph and release the catch without ever taking it out of the water. These fish have a protective slime coating that help keep the fish free from diseases. In my line of work however, people like to have photograph taken with their catch. Take care to protect the fish and release them with as little handling as possible. Now as for the other species of fishing in New York, there are plenty of fish to be caught especially on the Great St. Lawrence River. The walleye season also started last month, and they are known to be some of the tastiest fish in the world. Many walleye fisherman also practice CPR especially with fish well over the state minimum length. These fish tend to be some of the best reproducers of large walleyes, and I never recommend keeping a fish over twenty inches in length. These fish are some of the most difficult fish to catch due to their movement in Public Boat Launch the water column all day long. Just because they were at a 30’ depth at noon doesn’t mean that Beach on Grounds with Picnic Areas they’ll be there at 7:00pm. If you think Walleye Campgrounds Located on the St. Lawrence River fishing can be tough at times, try fishing for Muskellunge. They are known as the fish of 10,000 casts for a reason. for muskies”. The reason is because it takes the skill and patience of a hunter to do battle with one. The key to winning the battle is landing the fish. Just like the Northern Pike, muskies will cause your reel to scream, spewing line out as if your drag wasn’t even set. They then may rest for brief periods allowing you to think that they may have come off or cut your line. Musky hunts are by far the toughest days of fishing. Hours upon hours can go by and not a single Musky can be found. On the other hand, when fishing for Smallmouth or Largemouth Bass, you could feasibly catch twenty to thirty fish on a good day. The Northern Pike, Walleye, and Perch seasons are now open. Bass and Muskie seasons open on the third Saturday in June. Whichever species you seek, get out and fish. You’ll enjoy the time outdoors and have stories to share afterwards. Black Lake Report- Staring next month The Angler Magazine will be providing a monthly Black Lake report from Black Lake Marine. Summer Classic director Tim Thomas with a beautiful 30” Atlantic he scored trolling Lake Ontario with a Koyote Ugly Diabolical Thunder Spoon in early May.
“A TOURNAMENT EVENT FOR THE MASSES” – THAT IS WHAT the NYS Summer Classic is being referred to all across the state as this event does not require anglers to have a boat to participate, covers the entire state, allows anglers to fish 24 hours a day, and features species anyone can target from shore or the piers! Sparked from the recent success of the NYS Winter Classic, the Summer Classic has the potential to become NY’s largest fishing event. It’s unique design and expansive network of supporters continues to build the foundation attracting more and larger sponsors adding to the prize pool. Unlike traditional fishing events where the largest fish of a particular species is awarded the Grand Prize, the NYS Classic Tournaments pool all the 1st place finishers into a blind drawing for the Grand Prize allowing each fish division winner a shot at the top prize! While 10,000 anglers may seem like an ambitious number of anglers to get involved, when you consider all the big lake trollers, bass fishermen, shore fishermen, Finger Lakes anglers, perch and walleye anglers on Erie, Adirondack fishermen, anglers on Lake George and Champlain, and all the charter clients, added all together across the entire state, that number becomes very attainable quickly! At 10,000 anglers the Grand Prize would be $50,000 cash with the Top 20 placing for each fish species! Plus cash awards for the overall largest Rock Bass ($500) and Bowfin ($250). This 10-week long event is only $25/angler to join (with an optional $10 Lunker Pool), or $5/youth angler (16 years old and younger). Sponsor prize packages along with cash awards will be awarded to the Top 3 anglers in both the adult and youth divisions across all the species with additional cash awards and door prizes rounding out the prize structure. The excitement starts June 17th this year (opening day of Bass Season), and runs all the way through August 31st. Weigh-in/Registration locations are located all over the state (over 60 in total). Registration, live leaderboards, etc. can be found at: www.NYSsummerclassic.com

Torpedo Trolling Products June Tips TORPEDO FISHING PRODUCTS PRIDES THEMSELVES ON innovating new products to help improve your trolling spread. They fish Lake Ontario from the Canadian side and always shares fishing concepts with me to share with our readers. Many of Torpedo’s concepts are simple and the understanding of the crustaceans/baitfish/ prey relationship is the key to anticipating daily feeding cycles on Lake Ontario. Though Torpedo’s tips can be applied to other fishing applications. When fishing pre-dawn for salmonoids, create the biggest disturbance possible that represents feeding activity drawing aggressive fish to your spread. Utilize your biggest paddles off your downriggers at this time to create the most fish attracting turbulence. Fish are no different than other animals. It’s the gull with the bait in his mouth that attracts the other birds. Early morning is when the crustaceans and bait are higher in the water column, the salmon will be aggressive and on the chase, make the disturbance with-in your spread to attract them and trigger that aggressive strike when they are chasing! Divers generally resist the water at about a 45 degree angle. This is a disturbance that does create aggressive strikes. We like to take it a step further by attaching a Torpedo Diver to the NEW Torpedo Deep Sea Diver which changes the pitch and the force of the diver, which again creates more disturbance triggering those aggressive strikes. Check out Torpedo’s website to see our Deep Sea Diver page for information about why this diver is unique, how to use it, and depth charts. These and other trolling tactics are shared by the designers at Torpedo and tested by our engineers that “Love to Fish”, on our website at www.torpedodivers.com. Next month we will focus on when fish transition to the ambush mode…., until then Tight Lines and try Torpedo Fishing Products!

Your Brook Trout Heritage BY RICHARD PREALL, RETIRED NYSDEC FISHERY BIOLOGIST MUCH OF MY CAREER AS A FISHERIES BIOLOGIST STATIONED But first, why bother with heritage strain brook trout? The answer… in the eastern Adirondacks was focused on the perpetuation and they are wild, adapted to the Adirondacks and have true advantages over restoration of heritage brook trout strains. Way back in the 1970’s, domestic hatchery trout. Most domestic brookies live two to three years DEC recognized that native brook trout were imperiled across the state in ponds; I have seen only a few that reached five years old. Heritage and a management plan was developed for their strain brook trout can survive for up to seven years, recovery. The term “heritage” was adopted to define thus having the potential to reach trophy size. populations of brook trout which had no known Heritage brook trout are smaller and warier than private or public fish stocking history. justice to the colors you see in person. DEC now manages 11 waters for the Windfall strain. The first Windfall eggs and milt came from the native fish in Windfall Pond. But, subsequent DEC egg takes have come from newly established brood stock ponds. The waters now harboring Windfalls are: Mountain Pond, Palmer Pond, Round Pond/Twin Pond, Ledge Pond, Black Pond, Long Pond, Silver Lake, Balsam Lake, Loomis Pond and Giant Washbowl. Here is a bit about what I know about each of these waters. Mountain Pond – This 58-acre pond has easy access. It is located adjacent to Route 30 just north of Paul Smiths College in central Franklin County. Portions of old Rt 30 border the pond, but you better have 4WD on your vehicle to bounce through the potholes. There is a car top launch on the south end of the pond and there are several primitive campsites along the shoreline. Mountain Pond is managed under Catch and Release (No Kill) and artificial lures only regulations. It is one of the brood stock ponds for the Windfall strain. DEC nets it every fall to get eggs. Mountain Pond has darkly stained water, just like the home water for this strain. Catch rates are good here if the loons keep their distance. The longest brook trout I have ever caught (19.5 inches) hit a Hornberg streamer I was casting near a log on Mountain Pond. Unfortunately, the fish was a spawned-out female that weighed barely two pounds. Mountain Pond fishes well on the deep north end of the pond in the spring and in the shallow south end of the pond in the fall. About 10% of the trout are wild here. The stocked Windfalls have their adipose fin clipped (the same goes for all the ponds below). Black Pond – At 73 acres, Black Pond is one of the largest heritage waters. It has roadside access along the Keese Mills Road which joins Route 30 adjacent to Paul Smiths College. The College and the APA’s Visitor Interpretive Center own the lands and Black Pond. A management agreement with DEC allows for angler access. The six-car parking lot fills quickly in the spring. A 100 portage is needed to get a canoe or jon boat to the outlet area. Then you must paddle a few hundred yards to get to
the main pond and be prepared to pull you boat over a beaver dam or two. Black Pond has great natural reproduction, but still gets stocked a bit. It can produce big brookies and is also a stained water. Black Pond can reach 40 feet deep, but don’t bother fishing deeper than 15 feet after mid-summer because it loses oxygen down there. Black Pond is another DEC brood stock pond and I urge anglers to return those big females and males to help generate more eggs to perpetuate this great strain of brook trout. You will catch plenty of 10-12 inchers to grace a frying pan. Long Pond – About 10 acres, Long Pond drains into Black Pond. It won’t appear on stocking lists because natural reproduction has created an abundant population of brookies. A fish over 10 inches is big for Long Pond, but this is an excellent water to catch brookies on a dry fly all summer long. You access Long Pond by canoeing the length of Black Pond to its northwest corner. A small landing there lets you hop out for CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

the 150-yard portage to Long Pond. Long Pond is shallow, not much over eight feet in most spots but springs keep it cold. There is a lean-to on the northwest shore, but overnight camping is not permitted. Ledge Pond – This 43-acre pond is in the St. Regis Canoe Area, but is well away from the better-known ponds in that area. Ledge Pond is deep with a rock/cliff northern shoreline. But, it can be fished from shore in spots on the south shore. Access is challenging and involves parking off the Floodwood Road in central Franklin County, then portaging to Long Pond, then canoeing (no motors allowed) to the far northwest corner bay of Long Pond, then another lengthy portage to Ledge Pond. If you hustle, it takes about 1.5 hours to go the distance. Ledge Pond has clear water and because it is deep, can be tougher to fish. Natural reproduction has not been great here due to a lack of spawning streams. Ledge was reclaimed with rotenone in 2012 and last I heard can produce brookies up to 17 inches, but not a lot of them. Round Pond/Twin Pond – Round Pond is 17 acres in size and well named. It’s a round bowl with gradual depth changes. But, it has a great spawning stream and high natural reproduction, so catch rates are good. A big trout in Round Pond would be 15 inches. Twin Pond is a little quarter acre pond on the outlet of Round Pond, you can almost cast across it and no boat is needed to stalk the brookies. Round Pond has trail access from Route 73 just to the west of Chapel Pond and Keene Valley in Essex County. My recollection is it takes about 15 minutes of walking and the uphill climb with a Sportpal was possible on my old 55 year knees. A popular hiking trail borders the pond, so don’t expect solitude. Giant Washbowl – This little 3-acre gem is located directly north of Chapel Pond off Rt 73 and east of Keene Valley. 5 Giant Washbowl, so catch rates are high. A lot of the pond can be fished from shore, which I have done to avoid the grueling nature of portaging a canoe up that trail. The nearby views of the High Peaks and Gothic Range are spectacular, especially during fall foliage season. Hikers frequent the area, but few of them fish. Giant Washbowl has a great name and is a classic Adirondack brook trout pond. Palmer Pond –(15 acres) is not named on topographic maps. It is located just east of the Raquette River in central Franklin County. Find the Corey’s Road off Route 3 at the south end of Upper Saranac Lake and drive to the parking area just past the bridge going over Stony Ponds outlet. Then you hike two miles south along the horse trail leading to the Cold River area. Find a small stream crossing the trail and follow a herd path east a quarter mile to reach Palmer Pond. Palmer Pond has a marshy shoreline with plenty of tree stumps and some weed beds to give brookies shelter. It can produce large fish, but your likely best will be 15 inches. Palmer Pond is productive with plenty of bugs to make the trout fat and sassy. Balsam Lake – Balsam Lake (38-acres) – is a mystery. It is located just west of Spruce Lake in the West Canada Wilderness in central Hamilton County. My angler contacts see fish rising there, can mark them on graphs, but haven’t caught one to brag about. Balsam Lake used to have acidity problems, but more recent testing showed a pH improvement and since no other fish species were present, I gave it a go for experimental stocking. To reach Balsam you drive to the very end of the Jessup River Road, then portage two miles to Spruce Lake, another half mile or so along Spruce’s eastern shore and then bushwhack east to Balsam Lake. So, you really must want to get there. If you go, though, and figure out those trout you might just get the trout of your dreams. CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

Loomis Pond – Another very remote pond of about 30 acres located along the western edge of the Silver Lake Wilderness. Access involves crossing the West Branch Sacandaga River near Avery’s Place off Rt 10 south of Piseco Lake in Hamilton County. Then you head east for a couple of miles over poor trails. It takes true woodsman skills to get to Loomis. I have heard of trout being caught in Loomis and I suspect there is a cadre of repeat anglers who are keeping the place to themselves. Loomis is another recovered, formerly acidic water. Silver Lake – Last, but nowhere near least, is 74-acre Silver Lake. Silver Lake is the namesake water for the Silver Lake Wilderness in south-central Hamilton County. It’s an eight-mile hike from the Benson area to reach Silver Lake and you need to bring a boat with you, so good luck with that. BUT – Silver Lake produced the current state record brook trout, caught

by Rick Beauchamp, who’s story will appear in this magazine soon. Silver Lake is a recovered acid water that Beauchamp recommended I stock. Five years later, Rick caught his 6-pound monster there which I certified as a state record. That fish was a four-year-old Windfall strain brookie – demonstrating just how fast a heritage strain trout can grow in a remote water with no competing fish species. Silver Lake is very clear and deep. It can be a real pain to fish with even expert Beauchamp blanking there much of the time. But, if you want the ultimate brook trout challenge… go see if you can break Rick’s record. I hope these articles whet your appetite for a true Adirondack fishing experience - one similar to what our great great grandfathers enjoyed. New York still has traditional fishing opportunities and these trout strains embody all that makes the term “heritage” vital to our sport.

WEST CANADA CREEK REPORT BY CHARLIE WARFIELD, WWW.MODERNFLYFISHER.COM THE MONTH OF JUNE IS A PRIME TIME OF YEAR ON THE WCC. Lower water levels make the stream much more wade friendly and prolific hatches of Gray Fox 12-14, Hendrickson 14, Light Cahill 14, Red Quill 12-16 and BWO 18-20, mean that there will be plenty of top water action. The streamer bite should still be good in the morning, evening and after dark. Towards the end of the month we will start to see some terrestrial activity, starting about the third week I June I begin using a western rig to search for trout during the day. To use this set-up tie on a large pattern like the Battleship Hopper, or the Chernobyl Hopper, then tie some 4-5x tippet to the bend of the hook and attach a nymph pattern like a bead head Pheasant Tail nymph or Hares Ear. When using this setup the hopper acts as an indicator for the nymph and it give the fish the option of a big top water meal if they wish. Try it out. And Fish more, Catch more.

ANGLER MAGAZINE FLY FISHING...
Fly Tying Patterns BY MATHEW DELORENZO Matt is a full time Fly Fishing/Upland Hunting guide for the Hungry Trout Fly Shop in Wilmington, NY. He can be reached through the fly shop info@hungrytrout.com IF YOU’RE LIKE ME, YOU PROBABLY CARRY A SMALL ARMY of dry flies. It’s important to be armed with whatever you might need to take advantage of the great dry fly fishing that spring and early summer can provide. Last month I wrote about how the fly fishing market is packed full of fly patterns, and how the search for the holy grail of flies continues. Surely this hunt will continue until long after we are gone. The fly you will see in this issue is as close as I have come to the real deal. I know this fly to work through a variety of hatches when tied in neutral colors. This pattern has a few things that I look for in a good dry fly pattern. I like my flies to ride low in the water which gives the fish a good look at them and makes the imitation appear trapped. I also want them to be visible to me. There are few things more frustrating than trying to pick out a fly in the water. The design of this pattern allows the fly to sit low in the water, but the combination of two different hackle materials flares the hackle upwards on the post and which keeps most of the hackle above water. The post itself makes the fly a little easier to pick out. One of the nice things about this design is that due to the flare of the hackle, you can easily disguise a short Hi-Vis post if you require it. I talked at length last month about color. I’ve taken several approaches to this pattern. I like to keep a bunch of them around in neutral colors. Because this fly is an emerger or a stillborn imitation, you can get away with many different colors to imitate a variety of bugs. By carrying

brown and tan I fish this fly effectively through most of the major hatches. You can also tie it on a klinkhammer hook to get a true emerger profile. Hook: Daiichi 1110 #12-14 Thread: Veevus 16/0 Brown Shuck: Faux Fox - Brown Tail: Lemon Wood Duck Fibers Abdomen: Turkey Tail Post: Para Post Wing - White Hackle 1: Grizzly Hackle Hackle 2: MFC Henry’s Fork Hackle Ultra Light – Mottled Dun Thorax: Hareline Dubbin

Start the fly by wrapping a thread base. Tie in the shuck, then on top of that tie in 3-4 wood duck fibers. Tie in a length of Turkey tail about 4-5 fibers wide and wrap it forward evenly. Now you are going to tie in the post and the hackle materials. Tie your grizzly hackle in first onto the post, then move down and tie in the Henry’s Fork hackle. Dub the thorax of the fly using the Hareline Dubbin. The color is not important, this fly can be tied in a variety of colors to match different hatches. Once done, wrap the grizzly hackle ¾ of the way down the post and tie it off. Now you’re going to wrap the CDC hackle from top to bottom. You will see that the CDC is going to flare the grizzly hackle upwards which allows the fly to float as designed, trapped in the film. Whip finish the fly around the parachute post and cut the thread. All that is left to do is trim the Para Post just above the hackle. SARATOGA/SACANDAGA AREA REPORT BY JOE GRECO, WWW.NEWYORKFISHING.COM Well it’s been a chilly May thus far and many anglers are facing challenges associated with colder than usual water temperatures. A week long cold snap such as the most recent one we have had can throw the fish for a loop, so to speak. With spawning progress heavily dependent on stable conditions this kind of weather can put a damper on things and put certain species of fish in a neutral to negative mood. These species include your bass and pan fish family members that are highly sought after on Saratoga Lake as well as many other local waters. Start thinking spawn when it comes to bass and crappie targeting fish in 2 to 8 feet of water. Sight fishing is very popular this time of year and fish should be
located around docks, vertical structure and shallow spawning areas. Live bait or small jigs under a slip float is the go to presentation for crappie and bass will likely clobber anything that swims too close this time of year. The walleye action has been spotty as well as any long period of cold weather will tend to postpone the transition that these fish are in. This being the post spawn to summer transition in which the fish will re-adjust after spawning and settle back into a more consistent and predictable pattern. Key in on emerging weed growth and baitfish in close proximity to shoreline structure for success this time of year on

Saratoga Lake. Look for the warmest areas of the lake and fish them with jigs or suspending minnow imitating baits. In-line spinners and live bait will also be excellent choices and if the action baits aren’t working slow things down with live bait/slip bobber combinations to trigger lethargic fish into biting. Spring is also a decent time of year to fish at night as they will be holding shallow and can be notorious for night hunting when the water is still cool. The Great Sacandaga is always a great place to hunt walleye in the spring. Fish will be found all over the place by now and shallow rock breaks in areas of current are a good place to start looking. There will always be fish on bottom and I have found fish in shallow this time of year as well as out deeper in 20 to 30 feet of water. Move around until you make contact using small crankbaits or crawler harnesses. I like to fish the old river channel edges this time of year especially up in the Northville area. CAPT JJ’S LAKE GEORGE REPORT AFTER OUR SECOND MILD WINTER IN A ROW, WE END UP with a cold and wet spring, strange weather for sure. Let’s hope this summer is an improvement. We saw really good numbers of keeper sized lake trout over 23” all spring and this should continue through the summer, the population is doing well. The trout will shift out of their shallow water haunts of springtime when the water warms into the 60s. That may take a while this year, so some lakers could remain shallower into June, especially if the smelt are there. Early in the month with the deep water still pretty cold slower presentations will catch more fish; this is one time of the year I will run christmas tree rigs with a small to medium lure that has good action at slow speeds. As the water temps increase I will switch to spoons and speed up a bit: Suttons and the similar Plazma spoons from Fish307, Mooselooks, Speedy Shiners, etc. work good in LG. The old standby color was the OBD, orange/black dot, but these are no longer made, not to worry many other color patterns will work under the right conditions. We spent very little time fishing landlocks this spring, last year they picked up for us in late June when we finally found them; the previous year’s hot spot was void of fish. Will have to see what happens this year, did see some nice salmon caught in May, including an awesome 26” male with a big kype caught by my buddy Ray casting from shore. The key with them is temperature, find the thermocline and follow it as it goes deeper. The temperature rule is one that salmon will often break to feed, so you can catch them deeper or shallower especially on June when surface temps are still in the 60s. Bass season opens on June 17 this year, they can be fished for prior to that date with artificial lures and C&R only. They should still be on the beds early this month and can be caught pretty shallow, 10-20’. The Keitech swim baits and Yamamoto Senkos are popular, and shiner’s will work good after the season opens. Big shiners can produce some real nice largemouths and smaller ones will work too, plus the smallies like them early in the season.

WE HAVE ALL HEARD THE SAYING TH 10 PERCENT OF THE fishermen catch 90 percent of the fish. Although Im not siure of these numbers are exact, I find this statement to be true. But why is it that some guys are so consistent and others struggle? I have found that there is no substitute for time spent on the water actually fishing and learning. It stands to reason that the guys on the water the most have the advantage and tend to know more about changes taking place below the surface. Attention to detail and sweating the small stuff: The guys whom are usually the most consistent are usually the guys who take the time to check their hear. Let’s face it, with the economy and work, every minute on the water fishing is precious. Don’t waste it getting caught unprepared or making rookie mistakes. Line: Line is probably the most important thing I can think of. This is your direct connection to the fish. There are so many choices it can get overwhelming. A common mistake is that fishermen tend to fish with heavier line than they need. That is what your drag and a good balanced rod and reel are for. Terminal Tackle: Terminal Tackle such as swivels, hooks and other connectors are something that should be paid attention too. The bottom line is that you get what you pay for. If you buy your hooks or swivels out of the bargain bin and they fail you, then you asked for it. Hooks: Sharp, strong, and clean! Check your hooks before every trip and periodically while you fishing. It only takes a few minutes to check if they are sharp the night before a big trip. I really hope this has helped to explain just some of the reasons why some guys are more consistent than others. I tend to believe it’s because they do many little things before they start fishing instead of wading through it during their actual fishing trip. A little bit of work off the water can really pay big on the water.

NORMS BAIT LAKE CHAMPLAIN REPORT FISHING SHOULD REALLY HEAT UP IN JUNE, AS MAY continues, some really nice 7-9 lb landlock salmon have been showing up in catches. Salmon have just starting to flare up and warming temps should really have the salmon bite on. 15-25 ft down trolling over 5070 feet of water up the western side of the lake has been best. Stop in for the recent best color spoons, and current daily updates. Those who have been jigging for lakers have been scoring their share and that will only get better as we get into June and fish get settled in on their summer patterns. Berkley paddetails and Venom Bad Blood SeriesTube jigs are among the favorites, many prefer white, but again each season finds favored patterns. Walleye action has been good in and around the rivers and look for that to continue. Bucktail jigs tipped with worms or shiners have been good. Heddon Sonars and Green Mtn. Grabbers in green, red and white, chartreuse and fire-tiger have been taking fish. Bass season will be upon us later this month and like always have crabs, minnows of all sizes and a huge selection of national and local bass fishing favorites. We will have everything you need to make your LCI Father’s Day Derby successful. EAST SHORE BAIT AND TACKLE REPORT BY BEN BARRY, OWNER EAST SHORE BAIT & TACKLE WALLEYE SEASON HAS OPENED WITH A HUGE BANG compared to last year with anglers catching limits from the shore of Oneida Lake to depths of 35 feet of water and plenty more caught up the tributaries. Early season preferred baits are Sonars / Blade Baits, Bucktail Jigs tipped with a worm and live bait such as leeches or minnows. June is upon us and the walleye can be caught drifting worm harnesses while jigging Sonars or bucktail jigs along the edge of the weed beds and out to deeper water in the middle of the day. Walleye can be caught in the shallows casting worm harnesses over the weed beds or jigging bucktail jigs inside the edge of the weeds on overcast days. During the rest of this month and OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK through the summer more anglers will start trolling in deeper water for walleye and running small 2 ½” spoons or stick baits, such as Fresh Run walleye spoons, Michigan Full Line of Lures & Live Bait for Any Season Stinger spoons, Try Our Local In House Jigs and Blade Baits Rapala stickbaits and Challenger 1201 Main Street • Sylvan Beach, NY stickbaits. Anglers are picking up new tactics this year such as running a small spoon on a Dipsey Diver, leadcore line or downrigger, trolling stickbaits in areas where the fish are suspended and throwing worm harnesses over the weeds is new for many anglers producing larger walleye. Bass Season will open June 17th and we will see huge small mouth bass this year due to the abundance of various bait fish in Oneida Lake over the past year including the dreaded gobies. The absolute power of the small mouth bass is a huge attraction for many anglers with the most muscle density per body mass. These fish are fighters and will put your fishing skills to the test. Many small mouth bass are caught in the weeds and rocky shoals around Oneida Lake including the Barge Canal and Fish Creek using jigs, drop shot rigs, stickbaits, live bait and a variety of plastic baits. Largemouth bass can be caught early at dusk or dawn on top water lures over weed beds. Top water poppers is one of my favorite ways to catch these fish with the thrill of seeing a big fish fly out of the water to crush a bait and jumping repeatedly during the fight. Try using bucktail jigs or some live bait later midday and going back to top water in the evening. All baits and lures can be bought at East Shore Bait and Tackle with a huge selection of in house custom hand tied bucktail jigs and sonars designed for walleye and bass. We also carry live bait from butter worms, Michigan wigglers, night crawlers and minnows in a 400 gallon bait tank to insure you’ll have the right bait and advise every chance you get to be on the water.

MICKEY’S ONEIDA LAKE REPORT You couldn’t ask for a more typical Walleyed Pike opener for Oneida Lake, wind, rain, cold, and high water; perfect! Despite these odds fish were being taken in about 18 foot of water using blade baits such as the Heddon Sonar or XPS Lazer. Some of the best angling for walleye took place the mouth of fish creek at Silvan Beach; In fact, the Lions Club walleyed derby winner hailed from that location. He was 12 year old Nicholas Nolan with his 24 inch walleye. Hair jigs, along with blade baits are typical early season offerings. The nice thing about the pier at Silvan Beach is the sandy bottom which translates into fewer snags. As of this writing perch are being caught in about 15 foot of water with blade baits or small brown jigs tipped with a worm or a fathead minnow. Speaking of brown jigs, we at mickeys are starting to notice that for the past few years there has been an interest in jigs sporting the colors brown, olive, yellow and gray. bass. A 13 pound walleye was netted by the hatchery in Constantia this spring; that’s wright up there for Oneida Lake. In fact, most of the walleye netted by the hatchery were of larger than average size. So far, many of the walleye being caught are found to have fingerling perch in there stomachs, which is typical for early season. The panfish bite, primarily sunfish and crappie, has been affected by colder that usual temperatures, this caused the fish to stray further from shore seeking warmer water, not good news for the shore bound angler. Over all, Oneida Lake is poised to produce some decent fishing this season. It all depends on the weather. As of now the weeds are just staring to form; By the time you read this they should be fully developed and that’s were the fish will be. Learn why so many successful Oneida Lake fisherman target walleye in the weeds in the July issue of The Angler Magazine.

UPSTATE GUIDE SERVICE EASTERN FINGER LAKES AREA REPORT BY WAYNE O WALLEYE AND TROUT FISHING IS IN FULL SWING HERE IN the eastern Finger Lakes and Central New York. Most all the creeks have been stocked and two year old trout are easily found under bridge pools and in big eddy pools. Water temps climbing in the shallows of the Finger Lakes is finding northern pike and Norlunge on the prowl. Walleyes are a bonus fish in the Eastern Finger Lakes. With the exception of Otisco Lake. Big Waldo’s are around and shallow these days. Want to catch one? Call Captain Justin Okrepki of Otisco Lake Guide Service. He knows how to find them. Tigers are a fish I like to pursue with flies, but anglers floating minnows and casting swimbaits and stickbaits are landing big fish on Otisco. Wa l l e y e fishing on the open lake of Oneida seems sluggish for many anglers, the below average water temperatures and strong tributary flows will keep concentrations of walleyes in and around the creek mouths and up the
creeks. So those areas seem to be the best place to target (5/14/17). Conditions and fish locations change quickly this time of year. I have been after jumbo perch last couple of days, as they are a favorite of mine and many of my friends. They fish well and eat well. They are in transition as well...Post spawn. Trollers on Cayuga are reporting wicked catches of trout this past week. I expect that to continue through the rest of June. The walleye fishing will only get better...And the Northern Pike and Tiger Musky fishing will as well. What remains in the balance is Rick Ranier with an Otisco the dry fly fishing for stream trout. Norlunge. Photo courtesty All this wet weather has made the Upstate Guide Service. dry fly fishers struggle a bit on the rivers and streams in Central New York, but June will be another story with heavy and strong hatches. Now the fishing Community is really starting to recognize that this is a great sport for women as well, and the playing field is leveling out. Unlike many other sports where size, speed, and strength provide an advantage, when it comes to fishing those attributes don’t really matter. Fishing requires a lot of mental patience, skill, strategy, and even grace which arguably gives women a slight advantage. Despite any small advantages women anglers may have been pre-disposed too, We still have had to battle our way through, and faced many other obstacles to gain respect and recognition in this field, weather it was viewed a hobby or a profession. Miranda Ludwig was born and raised in Cammal, PA. This is where her love for Trout fishing began as a young child, and grew into a life- long passion when last September, at 24 she made a spontaneous Mayfield, NY move to The Salmon River, in Pulaski to focus her efforts on steelhead, Browns, and Salmon. She is currently employed at Fat Nancy’s Bait & Open all year round – 1/2 days on Holidays Tackle shop, a well- known favorite among traveling anglers. to being a unicorn at times, it’s hard to go unnoticed and you usually get undivided attention if you have a fish on which is good usually, but can sometimes cause nearby fishermen to become upset and try to push you out of a good hole” her advice is “Don’t let the pressure get to you, Be Stubborn, continue casting out as if they were never there , keep catching fish, and never stop learning and growing” The process of self -improvement in Angling is a lifetime endeavor, also realizing, and knowing the importance of Stream etiquette deserves the respect of all anglers no matter what gender. ElaineSupp@fish_girl_outdoors, is a 35 year old, avid female angler that grew up in Cherry Valley, near Cooperstown, and was living in the Syracuse area, until 3 years ago when she also made the unplanned decision to sell her house and buy a small cabin in the woods of Pulaski, NY on the world renowned Salmon River. Lainey rarely fishes the Salmon Run, instead she concentrated her fishing efforts on Adirondack Lakes nearby, and the St. Lawrence river targeting all species, she considers big walleye and Pike pulled from ice as her signature fish. Lainey found most of people she has encountered in the fishing industry to be very supportive. She also added “ There will always be a portion of the population who assume that if a girl takes an interest in a male dominated arena, she must have ulterior motives of trying to make a statement, or gain attention. As Women Anglers we tread a fine line somewhere between compromising that which makes us unique, and a fear of generating the wrong kind of attention.” She also adds “For you to be taken seriously as a Female Angler its not enough just to participate, its not enough just to show up and have fun, because then you are just some girl that was brought along. So there is a drastically shortened learning curve I’ve realized to

be taken seriously I had to be twice as good, and twice as careful, you must immediately be one of the best, or you are immediately a joke.” Angelia Scarchilli, or “Angler Ang” as she is known through Angler Magazine, is 32 years old and a native of Stillwater, N.Y. She was raised in a fishing family, who also enjoyed the outdoors and camping. Her passion for Angling set in about 8 ½ years ago when she met her boyfriend who began teaching her. She has recently developed a new Instagram site UpstateNY_LadyAngler to promote women in the upstate NY area who are serious about fishing. She adds “I especially love seeing the world of fishing open to the many very talented Female anglers that I hope to be in league with someday”, and “ I find myself researching the fish we are headed out for next, what conditions do they like, how to bait, and different techniques I am both being taught, and educating myself with along the way” I discovered that all of the female anglers I interviewed had similar advice when it pertained to their advancement in the sport of Angling, and that was to find other more experienced Anglers who are willing to pass on their knowledge, and to teach you first hand the techniques needed to be successful in the diverse Fisheries of NY. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! In turn we are able to educate our young Female Anglers so they are able to strive to be their best, by strengthening their own self- worth. One of the major problems that most Female anglers have to deal with has nothing to do with the social aspect of gender. It pertains to the lack of access to quality gear, and the struggle to find functional clothes that fit, most of us have resorted to wearing small sizes of men’s, or extra-large sizes of youth clothing. Despite any difficulties faced by Women Anglers we have adapted, and have not been deterred, its safe to say that we are here to stay. My Education and involvement with fisheries has given me a means to reach out, have my voice heard, to share my passion of fishing with others. I also volunteer my time to our local Fisheries Federation, this has allowed me to become involved in the greater fishing community, and that is something I believe we should all strive to do in some capacity.

Beach Marine Bait Pens
T
eddy Beach grew up racing. Racing and fishing have always been his family’s two passions. “Jim Reider once told me, ‘Hey, kid you’re going to be fine,” Teddy said, remembering a night at the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds in 2005. “Over the course of the race, I heard his voice many times for he was my crew chief and spotter that night. We went on to win the 2005 Hoosier 100. I will remember those words forever.” Teddy’s dad was a drag racer at many different professional lev-
els. Teddy grew up with a fist full of throttle and a loud pedal under his right foot. Brakes were optional. Ted Sr. is Teddy’s hero, best friend and mentor. The elder is a third-generation manufacturer, farmer and entrepreneur. They come from a small village named Donnelsville, Ohio, where Teddy grew up running down the hill from the house directly into their tool and die shop. Mike Zimmer was their engineer at the time, and he would run Teddy out of the drafting room because he got tired of the boy destroying erasers and asking too many questions. The point of all this is to explain that engineering and manufacturing are in the family’s blood. Fishing is a passion, and they have fished all over Florida since Teddy was born. From bottom fishing for grouper and snapper off Fort Myers to sailfish and mahi in the Keys and marlin and tuna over in the Bahamas, if they weren’t racing, they were fishing. Out of the combination of those two passions, Beach Marine Products was founded to provide the market with innovative and professional saltwater fishing products. Beach Marine’s live bait pens are industry changing. With a sloped-bottom design and industry changing false bottom, these bait pens were engineered to reduce stress on baitfish. Heavy duty all 6061 aluminum construction with zinc anode assures a durable and long-lasting product. All hardware is stainless steel and doubled up, so there is no single point of failure. They are powder coated with no sharp edges to hurt or red nose baits. The Beach Blue color gives the pens a unique clean appearance as well as a calming atmosphere to decrease stress on the bait while holding. Large oversize doors allow access for cast nets and large dip nets. Beach Bait Pens come in many different shapes and sizes ranging from a 30Gal round, to a monster 400Gal oval. Beach Bait Pens are tough just like the Anglers who use them everyday. If you fish live bait, there is only one bait pen you should own. That is a Beach Marine Products. FLY FISHING
BE HONEST ABOUT YOUR FLY CASTING ABILITIES
W
hen booking a saltwater fly fishing trip with a guide, a mistake some fly fishers make is overstating their casting abilities. This will most likely lead to frustration for both the angler and guide resulting in a very long day on the water. Here are a couple of tips to make sure this situation is avoided Practice Makes Perfect Yep, the old saying “practice makes perfect” is so true. So, before embarking on a guided fly fishing trip, take the time to practice casting to a comfortable distance. For example, if you’re targeting redfish, make sure you can cast to a target at 40 feet. Most redfish are hooked at a closer range, however, being able to make the longer 40-foot cast will make the shorter casts of 15 to 30 feet seem much easier. Remember, casting is not only about proper timing and technique but also how confident the angler is at making the cast. Set Your Target Range Like archery, fly casting is all about executing a cast to a specific spot at certain distance. The best way to accomplish this is to set up targets in an open space in your backyard or at the park. I find the best targets are small orange soccer cones. These are easily seen, have a small diameter and won’t blow away in the wind. I also prefer the orange cones over the traditional hula hoops because it forces the caster to cast to a smaller target area.

veryone knows summer is a great time to catch trout on a fly. But for those looking to take fly fishing for trout to a whole new level, consider mousing. Mousing refers to fishing for trout with large topwater patterns meant to mimic small rodents. It is a tactic best utilized at night, when nocturnal rodents forage. The basic premise is that large trout have adapted their diet to eat mostly meat, be it smaller fish, rodents, frogs or even small birds. These fish are the top of the food chain in the waters where they reside, and they can be extremely hard to catch. They mostly hunt at night, and use the cover of darkness to stay safe from predators. Fishing at night has its challenges, and it has its rewards.
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 4
10 Feet To 40 Feet Set these cones at the following distances: 10, 20, 30 and 40 feet. I suggest instead of lining up the cones in a straight line, stagger the cones over an area at the appropriate distances. This will force you to make casts in different directions much like you would when encountering gamefish in shallow water. Cast to each target, starting with the cone closest to you and working up to the farthest cone. The key here is to try to only make one false cast before making the final forward cast to the target. By doing this you are forcing yourself to get the cast to the target as quickly as possible without wasting time on multiple false casts. Remember, false casts might look pretty, but they don’t catch fish! Accuracy Once you are comfortable casting to each target, start to work on placing the fly as close to the target as possible. As I mentioned earlier, the small diameter of the soccer cone forces you to cast the fly to a very small target zone similar to a fish’s feeding zone. You want to land the fly within a 2-inch by 2-inch window from the target. Once you are able to hit the target consistently from each distance with one false cast, you’re ready to hit the water. So, when booking a saltwater fly fishing trip with a guide, don’t make the mistake of overestimating your casting abilities. Follow the above steps and you will become a better fly caster, catch more fish and make your guide very happy.

CAMFLYFISHING.COM Here are a few things to keep in mind when mousing. 1. Be quiet. Sometimes it is hard to remember that fish can hear, too. Vibration from even our footsteps can spook these giants. So stealth is the name of the game; walk carefully and quietly and maybe the splash of your fly on the water will be followed by the eruption of water that is an eat from a big nocturnal fish. Keep light to a minimum and use a red/green light so the fish will not be spooked and your eyes will not be shocked by the light. 2. Be aware. When fishing at night, it is critical to know the stream you are fishing. It can be dangerous to be on the banks of a river in the dark, so always move slowly, not only will this help your stealth factor but it will keep you safer. As your senses adjust to the darkness, you can tune in with your surroundings, and you might be amazed at the things you hear and even see with just the light of the moon. 3. Be ready. Big fish eat big food. This applies to fishing streamers during the day or fishing mice in the dark. Have a good selection of large flies that swim on or just below the surface. When mousing, you can also use large subsurface streamers that push a lot of water. Fish can’t see very well in the dark, so they rely on sound and vibration when hunting at night. Large wind-resistant flies are hard to cast when you can see what is going on, much more so when you can’t see your hand in front of your face. Use clear-lensed glasses to protect your eyes. 4. Be calm. It is easy to get excited and pull the fly out of the fish’s mouth when setting the hook, so wait a couple of seconds after you hear the splash. Give the fly a small twitch and wait until you feel the fish, then set the hook and get ready for the night of your life! See more from Charlie Warfield at www.modernflyfisher.com.

TIPS FROM A PRO
CATCHING BIGGER FISH BRANDON LESTER
A
t our most-recent Bassmaster Elite Series event, I was fortunate enough to bring in the Phoenix Boats Big Bass, a 7.2-pound largemouth. It helped me to a good finish at the event, and I got a $1,500 bonus check for having the largest bass of the four-day event on Ross Barnett Reservoir near Jackson, Miss. Catching larger fish was part of my plan that week because catching numbers of fish didn’t happen for me. I knew if I stuck to the game plan, the bigger bites would happen. Here’s that plan for the next time you go out and want to catch bigger fish. 1. Target The Thickest Cover: Many times big fish like to hang out in the thickest cover a fishery has to offer. This is relative to whatever part of the country you are in, but for the most part big fish do not roam around as much and tend to be pretty lazy. In shallow weed-choked reservoirs like they have in Florida, the biggest fish tend to hide in the thickest grass vegetation. In open rivers, they like to bury up in thick logjams. 2. Target Isolated Cover: Look for one single boat dock sitting off to itself or one big treetop down a bare mud bank. In my experience, big fish get territorial. I think they will set up on these places and claim them as their home, sort of. This is especially true if the place offers plenty of food for them. 3. Use Bigger Baits: This one is obvious and effective. Many times as fishermen we get way too caught up in getting bites and don’t think enough about the size of
the fish we are catching. I’ve been guilty of it time and again in tournaments, but the truth is you only need five bites on tournament day. So use baits that appeal to big fish. Remember, you’re not likely to see big fish schooling on 2- to 3-inch shad. Throw 6-inch and bigger swimbaits or a big jig that resembles a big crawfish or bluegill.

These three tips should help you catch more big fish. Keep in mind that to actually present those bigger baits effectively and land the fish, you will need

to have the right gear. A big fish will break your heart and keep you up at night. Custom-built rods with Winn Grips from Mud Hole Custom Tackle, sturdy hooks from Mustad, and strong line from Vicious are all a must. fter more than a decade of fishing Bassmaster Southern Open events, local Florida angler John Cox finally won his first one. The event, held on the famed Tennessee River impoundment Lake Chickamauga, was a three-day tournament that was very tough on most of the anglers including Cox. The 31-year-old angler is the reigning FLW Tour Champion and he is on a hot streak. After learning the 2018 Bassmaster Classic would be hosted at South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell, he set his sights on winning an Open event to punch his ticket for a Bassmaster Classic berth. Cox is known on the bass circuit as one of the best sight-fishing anglers. He used his keen eyesight and knowledge of spawning bass to win on Chickamauga. Cox was one of the few anglers who exclusively sight fished throughout the second Southern Open of the season. It was an effective technique for several of the tournament’s top finishers. He put himself in contention for the win with a 22-6 limit on Thursday, followed by a 25-7 bag on Friday. His two-day total of 47-13 gave him more than a 3-pound lead heading into Saturday’s action, and his 20-6 limit on Saturday was heavy enough to secure the win. The Mud Hole Custom Tackle pro, who hails from Debary, Fla., picked up a contingency berth in the 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’s Sporting Goods with the victory. Fishing all three Southern Opens this season will solidify that berth. He also won more than $8,000 in cash, as well as a Triton 19 TrX and Mercury 200 Pro XS boat/motor package worth $40,000. “I’ve tried so long to win one of these Opens, it seems like forever,” Cox said. “I started fishing the Opens when I was 19. It’s where I started, really, so this definitely is a special thing for me. Building my own custom MHX rods is key for my success, because I can build technique-special rods and actions for different conditions.” Cox won the Lake Hartwell FLW Tour event last season and is excited about his chances in the Bassmaster Classic there. He won the Hartwell event last summer fishing the back of creeks getting his aluminum bass boat in places where most anglers could not go. Although the Classic will be held on Hartwell in the early spring, Cox is pleased to be fishing his first Classic event. Cox is having a decent start to the FLW Tour season, as well. Fishing in his own backyard on the third event at the Harris Chain of Lakes in Leesburg, Fla., Cox was super excited to fish his home waters. He led the event for the first three days to finish in third place and enjoy a nice payday. Cox finished in eighth in the recent FLW Event on Arkansas’ Beaver Lake after going out in fourth place on the final day. It was his second top-10 finish on the tour with just two events left this season.

T
imes have changed. Probing the water column from the bottom to the surface with a white, leadheaded bucktail lay in the province of the serious light tackle angler of yesteryear. It was and still is a deadly technique for hooking an amazing variety of fish in water depths ranging from 20 feet to 200 feet. Standard tackle for deep jigging would either be 12- or 15-pound-test line. Some beginners will insist on 20-pound test, but the lures don’t work as well as the line test increases. Most of the top anglers use a stout, 7-foot rod with plenty of lifting power and a baitcasting reel, but a few rely on spinning. If the rod tip collapses, not only will you have problems trying to drag a fish up from the depths, but the lure won’t work as well. The leadhead itself is the heart of the system. Anglers today opt for the new metal artificials, but my money rests on the oldfashioned white bucktail. Weight is a factor. You want the lightest weight that will get down to the bottom under the circumstances. With 15-pound-test line, the basic bucktail weighs 2 1/4 ounces. Unless the current is strong, you can reach the bottom in 200 feet of water with it. If the current becomes a problem, you can go to 4 ounces. Shapes differ, but the best bucktails have a knife edge on one side. As an aside, if I were limited to one lure to fish for any species anywhere in the world, it would be that white bucktail with either a length of plastic hanging from the hook or a strip bait or a small baitfish. It can be trolled, cast and retrieved, or deep dropped. When you are deep jigging, you want a vertical retrieve. That means you have to freespool the bucktail without any drag directly to the bottom before you start the retrieve.
NORTHEAST
CANGL_NE1-NE4.indd 4
JUNE 2017
If you’re having a problem telling when the lure hits bottom, watch the line. When the bucktail hits the bottom, the line will go slack for an instant. Working the lure is done by lifting the rod and then reeling the slack as you drop the rod tip. You can work it all the way to the surface using this method. How fast you retrieve and how high you lift the rod become variables. Try different approaches until you find what works at that moment. A good place to start learning to deep jig is around some form of bottom structure that a variety of fish call home. If you saw some of the catches light tackle experts used to achieve with this technique on 15-pound-test line in deep water, it would amaze you. Once you hook something of size, the next challenge lies in trying to lift that critter to the surface. When you do, you’ll be talking about it for a long time and you’ll have a smile on your face.

YAMAHA
Rolls Out Exciting Developments For Offshore Anglers
Y
amaha has some exciting new developments in the marketplace this summer that should catch the eye of offshore anglers. The latest version of the venerable F350 outboard now offers five full years of limited warranty protection. Also, Yamaha’s Helm Master Integrated Boat Control System has a new feature that will make large boats powered by big outboards even easier to control. The newest version of Yamaha’s most powerful outboard, the new 5.3-liter F350C now provides five full years of limited warranty coverage, wrapping a refined outboard package with a list of benefits and features that are still unique in the marketplace nine years after the debut of the original F350. “The inclusion of five years of limited warranty coverage with the F350C underscores the reliability of the F350,” said Ben Speciale, president, Yamaha Marine Group. “We are confident that this benefit for our 5.3-liter V8 customers builds in exceptional value for Yamaha’s most powerful outboard on the market.” Yamaha’s F350 redefined offshore power in 2007 and still has little competition in its class. The first F350 offered an outboard capable of the raw thrust necessary for pushing larger and heavier offshore boats. Thousands of F350s later, there is still nothing like it. And for boaters looking to control all that power, the new and improved Helm Master Integrated Boat Control System makes fishing from and docking big boats a breeze. Yamaha Marine Group recently announced a new feature that gives its Helm Master Integrated Boat Control System even greater levels of control. With the Set Point boat positioning function, boaters now have the capability to integrate all boat control systems and then guide them with GPS navigation technology. “The introduction of Helm Master changed the way boaters think about controlling larger outboard-powered boats,” said Speciale. “Helm Master made docking less stressful and fishing on the open water more enjoyable. Set Point takes that functionality and precision to the next level.” Set Point is comprised of a suite of satellite-guided capabilities designed to improve the boater’s ability to fish, maneuver and simply enjoy life on the water. Using a unique dual-antenna GPS to provide Helm Master’s operating system more navigational information, the Set Point function provides even greater and more precise control. Set Point has three primary modes: Stay Point, Fish Point and Drift Point. Each Set Point mode provides a solution to the tricky maneuvering challenges boaters encounter every day. Stay Point keeps the boat positioned near a particular spot; it maintains a selected position and heading. This mode is particularly helpful when a boat must hold a position and heading, for example at a fuel dock or at a bridge opening. In adverse weather or high currents, Helm Master uses higher RPM and greater engine activity to keep the boat as close to the mark as possible, within a 75-foot circle of the set point. Fish Point enhances fishing options; it maintains a selected position, but not a heading, and primarily uses only idle RPM to do so. The Fish Point mode makes use of a captain’s knowledge in heading a boat into the current or wind, bow upstream or downstream, to maintain a heading. Under normal condi-
tions, the Set Point function will use no more than idle RPM to hold the Fish Point position, which means Fish Point operation is less likely to scare the fish. In stronger seas, Fish Point will attempt to keep the boat on the point selected using no more than the requested Fish Point RPM to do so, up to 2,500 RPM. Yamaha’s Shift Dampener System propellers play a role in keeping the boat on point quietly, too. Drift Point allows the boater to drift the boat with the wind or the current; it maintains a selected heading, but not a position. Drift Point mode is particularly useful to maintain a heading when drift fishing or kite fishing. Drift Point allows the boat to drift with the wind or current, but stay pointed in the heading chosen. Each Set Point mode is activated with the touch of a button. The Set Point control buttons are integrated into the new Helm Master joystick and use Yamaha’s new CL7 touch screen display to initially configure the operator’s preferences. Each Set Point mode is user-defined for the needs of individual boaters. Helm Master Set Point hardware includes a dual-antenna GPS and stern-mounted lighting that illuminates any time any mode of the SetPoint system is active. The Yamaha CL7 display has a 7-inch touch panel screen with full multi-function display (MFD) capability and connectivity. The display offers precise engine and boat systems data for up to four outboards on one screen, along with other MFD functions such as maps, fishfinder, and graphing capabilities using its built-in 10 MHz GPS. It is the primary display for Yamaha’s fully integrated Helm Master boat control system, and is the required point of access to configure Set Point. Contact your dealer about the latest version of the Helm Master or for information about a retrofit kit that will bring earlier Helm Master-equipped boats up to date with the new technology. MOTOR REVIEW Tohatsu Introduces New Colors For MFS40 and MFS50
In 2014, Tohatsu brought to market some of its most popular outboards to date with its 40 and 50hp four strokes, the MFS40 and the MFS50. Weighing less than any other outboard in their class, they have experienced tremendous success in the mid-range market. New for 2017, Tohatsu is offering these in-demand outboards in a new color, Beluga White. One of the coolest looking outboards on the market is now offered in both Aqua Marine Blue and Beluga White. Boaters now have the option to choose which color best fits with their boat. The MFS40 starts at just 209 pounds. This outboard is equipped with proven technology, including electronic fuel injection (EFI) and digital CD ignition, which provides quick throttle response, excellent fuel economy and very smooth rides on the water. The MFS40 also has a high output 21 amp alternator for superior battery charging. The adjustable steering friction and trim tab reduces your amount of steering effort, making for an easier and more enjoyable boating experience. Convenience is also covered with the 40hp four stroke’s
built-in freshwater flushing system, making routine flushing quick and easy. The 40hp EFI four stroke not only offers a more powerful ride while using less fuel, but is among the lightest on the water in its class. With proven reliability and performance, the MFS40 is every boater’s versatile choice for work, play or even once-in-a-lifetime memory making. Many of the same things can be said of the MFS50. It is the lightest weight motor possible, and it has been upgraded with an improved gear case with a lower gear ratio, giving you the increased low end torque your boat needs. MOTOR REVIEW Suzuki Marine Introduces New Models To Outboard Lines
Suzuki Marine is expanding two of its most popular lines of outboards with new models to fill the needs of boaters and anglers. New SS-Series Models The performance-oriented SS-Series, with its signature matte-black paint job and distinctive graphics, is growing with a new 200hp four stroke and the availability of a 25-inch shaft length on its premier 250 SS V6. “People really like the performance matte black look and have been asking us to expand the line,” said Gus Blakely, vice president of sales for Suzuki Marine. “We’re happy to do that by adding the 200SS and making the 250SS available for more kinds of boats.” The Suzuki 200SS features Suzuki’s 200-horsepower inline 4-cylinder powerhead, with 175.0 cubic inch displacement, dual overhead cams and a 10.2:1 compression ratio for increased power and performance. Engine operations are managed by an onboard Engine Control Module and an array of sensors that control the engine’s multi-point sequential electronic fuel injection system and Lean Burn Control technology. The 200SS will come with conventional mechanical throttle and shift control and will be available in 20-inch and 25-inch shaft models. At just 518 lbs, this 4-cylinder outboard delivers V6 like performance in a more compact, lightweight package.
The availability of a 25-inch shaft model for the popular 250SS has been eagerly awaited. The V6 4-Stroke 250SS, with 4.0 liter displacement and a powerful 2.08:1 gear ratio, has built a solid reputation on the pro-bass circuit. With the addition of a 25-inch shaft length model, this high-powered outboard will find new application on bay boats, walleye boats, even the new breed of performance pontoon boats. New AP Advanced Series Models Suzuki has every right to be proud of the DF150AP and DF175AP, two new models in their toptier AP-Series. In addition to a long list of advanced features, these new 150- and 175-hp inline four cylinder outboards feature Suzuki Precision Control drive-by-wire throttle and shift, as well as Suzuki’s innovative Selective Rotation gear case. These outboards share their engineering DNA with Suzuki’s popular DF200AP 200-horsepower inline-four cylinder outboard. All three engines are built off of the same 175 cubic inch displacement inlinefour cylinder engine block. The new DF150AP and DF175AP boast the largest displacement in their respective horsepower classes. Engine performance is enhanced by a 10.2:1 compression ratio that generates optimal power, contributing to an impressive hole-shot and mid-range acceleration. A newly developed Semi-Direct Air Intake System further boosts power by providing cooler airflow to each cylinder. With the addition of these two models, Suzuki offers a wide range of new generation lightweight, compact, yet powerful inline four cylinder 4-stroke outboards. For more information on Suzuki’s full line of 4-stroke outboard motors, visit www.suzukimarine.com or call 714-996-7040.

FIELD TEST
Sea Eagle FishSUP FS126
Standup paddleboard fishing is trending, so we eagerly tested Sea Eagle’s new inflatable FishSUP FS126. Sea Eagle calls it super stable. We were super impressed. With a length of 12’6” and a width of 40”, it’s a spacious platform that’s tough enough to work hardened shorelines. Heavy duty .90 drop-stitch material covers the top, bottom and sides for superior protection against punctures and a 90” by 18” thick, camouflage EVA pad adds additional buffering while providing a non-slip footbed. An integral 36-inch ruler makes fish measurement a snap. We packed this rig in the trunk, hit the beach, and fully inflated it in less than 10 minutes. Smartly positioned D-rings tightly secured optional accessories including a swivel seat with Scotty rod holders, battery, 34-lb. thrust electric motor and forward mesh storage box with tube-style rod holders. An SUP paddle, kayak paddle, backpack, hand pump and repair kit come with the basic package. Price: $1099. For more information, call Sea Eagle at 800748-8066 M-F, 9-5 EST, or check out their website.

ric Scordo, of Watertown, N.Y., is a trophy catfish hunter. On April 30, he achieved a long-held dream of breaking the New York state record for channel catfish when he boated a massive 35.25-pounder from Lake Ontario’s Chaumont Bay. Caught on live bait using an Okuma reel paired with an Ugly Stick rod and an Addya hook, the beast smashed the existing record by more than 3 pounds. The previous record, which stood since 2002, weighed 32.12 pounds and was caught from Brant Lake, a 1,300acre reservoir in the Hudson River drainage. Scordo is a little bit of a fanatic about catch and release. The philosophy makes sense for someone specializing in large catfish, as it can take these fish decades to grow to state record size. Scordo was determined to release his record fish alive. So after it was weighed on a certified scale at Chaumont Hardware, the fish was taken to Chaumont Bay Marina where assistance was provided in keeping the fish alive and healthy. It was kept in a bait tank for a full day before a state biologist made it out for verification. After the record was verified, Scordo nurtured the fish to recovery and released it back into Chaumont Bay. An impressive gathering of local media were on-hand to video the fish’s release. Check out Chaumont Bay Marina on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/chaumontbaymarina/?rf=120452787968030

Fishmaster Launches Best Catch Contest for Customers Nationwide
F
i s h m a s t e r, creators of the first universal folding T-Top, has launched the Fishmaster Best Catch Contest. This contest offers Fishmaster customers and anglers throughout the U.S the opportunity to win a custom fiberglass reproduction of their award-winning catch crafted by American Fish Taxidermy. Contestants can submit unlimited pictures of their catch for a chance to win monthly prizes and to become eligible to win this grand prize, valued at $500 to $1,000. Entrants are encouraged to submit as many photos of different catches as possible. The contest kicked off Saturday, April 1, 2017 and ends on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017. “We design our products with the ultimate goal of helping our fellow anglers reel in the perfect catch,” said Greg Spivia of Fishmaster. “We want to showcase our loyal customers with the fish they caught in a way they can remember forever, through partnering with the most talented fish taxidermist in the U.S.—American Fish Taxidermy.” Through the contest, Fishmaster is awarding monthly prizes through September. Monthly prizes will be announced via email and Facebook on the first Monday of each month. The Grand Prize Winner will be announced on Oct. 15 via email with public notice on Fishmaster’s Facebook page. Monthly winners are eligible for the Grand Prize; however, our independent team of anglers will review all submissions before naming the big winner. Fishmaster encourages all interested parties to learn more about the Best Catch Contest, official rules, and how to enter at https://fishmaster. com/bestcatch.

If you shallow-water fish and need a flats boat, Mitzi Skiff is the boat for you. All Mitzi Skiff models float very shallow, they pole easily and track straight. With a minimum of horsepower, they are quick and provide a very smooth and dry ride. Mitzi Skiffs offers several models to fit an angler’s needs and budget. Their Mitzi 17 is perfect for the most demanding shallow-water anglers and charter captains. From its ability to get you home comfortably to its ultra-stealthy, no-hull-slap hull, it’s truly an angler’s boat. The 17’s CAD-designed hull has performance unmatched by any other shallow-draft skiff, at any price. It will do 45mph with a 60 hp engine, and it is capable of fishing 3 or 4 people. It offers lots of storage, easy maintenance and is remarkably dry. With a wide bow area and 11-degree deadrise hull, these boats take you to the shallow areas to find the fish and across open water as well. Mitzi Skiffs came from the idea that flats fishing didn’t have to be a rich man’s sport. Mitzi skiff is a boat that all of us can afford. They are lightweight, all composite, shallow water workhorses. There are many options available including center consoles, live wells, built-in tanks, Power Poles and much more. Professional captains guide out of Mitzi Skiffs every day, even days that are less ideal conditions.
