Dear Readers, This edition of the magaine that you are reading is put together by our local franchisee co-publisher. Your co-publisher’s contact information is shown in the directory adjacent to this article. We currently publish 38 separate editions of this magazine each month throughout the Continental United States, the Bahamas and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Our plan is to continue growing and to continue adding locations. If you love the outdoors and have ever considered owning your own business, you owe it to yourself to take a look at our franchise opportunities. Our franchise publishing model will enable you to make money doing what you love, being involved in the outdoor/marine industry. You don’t need to have prior publishing experience. We train you on how to do that. What you do need is a love of the outdoors and a somewhat adventurous spirit. Opening a new business is exciting and, yes, it requires hard work and commitment. But, once you bring this magazine to your community you will find it to be very rewarding and you will have created one of the best jobs and career opportunities that any angler could ever imagine. If you’re like us, owning your own fishing magazine may be an opportunity for you to be involved in an industry that you’re passionate about. Imagine never dreading to go to work but rather being excited about sharing the message of your magazine. Our ideal strategic growth would have franchise opportunities in the following locations, however, we have found that nearly any area that has an avid fishing community can be a good location for it’s own fishing magazine. MOTOR REVIEW Honda Marine Debuts New
BF4, BF5 and BF6 4-stroke Engines
Portability, performance and reliability are the hallmarks of Honda Marine’s new and redesigned portable engine models, the BF4, BF5 and BF6 4-stroke outboards. Honda Marine debuts new engines with the BF4 and BF6 models, and redesigns the legendary BF5 models. Packed with the latest technology from Honda, the 127cc 4-stroke, single cylinder engines offer boaters the choice of four horsepower (BF4), five horsepower (BF5) or six horsepower (BF6). All three new engines are available with either a short (15 inch/38 cm) or long (20 inch/51 cm) shaft. “The new Honda BF4, BF5 and BF6 engines are easy to start, easy to stop and easy to carry. The new four-stroke Honda Marine engines are best-in-class performers. They are the right size for the right purpose,” said Mark DiPietro, senior manager, Honda Marine. “The new Honda BF4, BF5 and BF6 marine engines feature a new internal fuel tank and new motor mounts to run quietly and smoothly, while delivering the longest continuous running time.”
The new Honda Marine BF4, BF5 and BF6 engines provide consumers four main features—portability, performance, reliability and comfort. Portability A combination of light weight (roughly 60 pounds) and new carrying handle design make the Honda BF4, BF5 and BF6 marine engines easy to transport and store. The tiller handle fully folds out of the way, making storage options even more convenient. Performance The engines integrate a 1.5-liter, large capacity internal fuel tank, which delivers the longest continuous running time in their class—more than 40 minutes at wide-open throttle. In addition, the Honda BF5 and BF6 4-stroke engines can be connected to an external fuel tank for longer journeys. Consumers have the choice of an additional three different propeller options for the style that best fits their boating. Reliability Honda Marine’s new BF4, BF5 and BF6 models share the same, proven onecylinder, 127 cubic centimeter engine block and benefit from Honda’s 4-stroke engine technology. In case of an oil pressure drop, a new, low-oil alert system will automatically limit the engine speed to 2,300 rpm to protect the engine. Comfort The new Honda BF4, BF5 and BF6 portable engines feature a host of new technologies and features that consumers will appreciate. • A new decompression mechanism helps make all three new Honda Marine engines easy to pull start, regardless of the engine temperature. • One-push stop switch serves to shut down the engine with no chance of the engine re-starting. • The Honda Marine BF4, BF5 and BF6 portable engines feature redesigned rubber motor mounts that reduce vibration in all rpm ranges and reduce engine noise. • The BF4, BF5 and BF6 are available with an optional charging system with a capacity of 6 Amps at 12 Volts to power consumer demands for electronic devices. With a starting U.S. manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $1,875, the BF4 is a compact, lightweight engine with excellent low- to mid-range power. The new Honda BF5 delivers new features and technology at a starting price of $2,025. The starting U.S. MSRP of the new Honda Marine BF6 is $2,150. For more information, see marine.honda.com.

Using a Smartphone Isn’t Always Smart On The Water Submitted by Sea Tow
P
eople rarely go anywhere on land without their smartphones anymore, and it has become increasingly common to see boaters using cell phones when they’re out on coastal and inland waters as well. That’s fine—as long as your boat is also equipped with a VHF radio, one of the most important pieces of safety equipment you can have on board. “Your cell phone could die or you could drop it overboard. We recommend people take a 5-watt handheld VHF along on their boat, at a minimum, to use as their primary form of communication on the water,” said Capt. Ed Schrader, owner of Sea Tow Hampton Roads, Va., which serves the busy waters of Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake Bay. “It’s better to have a 25-watt VHF mounted at the helm, however.”
N AU T I C A L T E R M
Capt. Sammy Royal, owner of Sea Tow Horseshoe Beach, Fla., which covers a rural stretch of the Gulf Coast on Florida’s Panhandle from Waccasassa to Keaton Beach, said boaters can’t rely on their smartphones always “having bars” in his area. “Cell phone service is very limited here. There are small fishing villages along the coast that are nine or 10 miles apart with nothing in between,” he said − making it essential to have a VHF on board. Another important benefit to using a VHF radio rather than a cell phone is that if you ever find yourself needing assistance, more than one listener can hear and respond to your call for help. “With a VHF, you are able to communicate with more people quickly on the water. Whether it’s Sea Tow, the Coast Guard, or a nearby boater, everybody’s going to hear what you’ve got to say,” said Capt. Schrader, adding, “The USCG’s Rescue 21 System also has VHF direction-finding capabilities and can obtain a relatively good location as soon as you click your mic and place that distress call. This helps greatly if you do not know your location or don’t have time to provide it.” Of course, a VHF radio can’t help you in an emergency situation if it’s not working properly. Both Captains advise using Sea Tow’s free Automated Radio Check service to quickly and easily check that your boat’s VHF is in operational prior to setting out on the water. To use the service, simply tune the VHF to the local Automated Radio Check channel, key the mic, and request a radio check. You will hear an automated response and then the call will be played back to you, confirming that your VHF radio is working and allowing you to assess transmission strength, a crucial safety check. Sea Tow Horseshoe Beach offers the Automated Radio Check service on VHF channels 26 and 27. Sea Tow Hampton Roads provides the service on channel 28. To find the Sea Tow Automated Radio Check channel in your boating area, visit https://www.seatow. com/tools-and-education/automated-radio-check. WWW.AWLGRIP.COM PARKIT360 FORCE ELECTRIC TRAILER DOLLY
WWW.MILLENNIUMMARINE.COM
If you own a boat, you know the stress of backing your trailered pride and joy into a tight space. With this in mind, we took it upon ourselves to take Parkit360’s Force 10K electric trailer dolly for a test spin. Right off the bat, we were impressed. Assembly was easy, and by connecting the trailer’s power harness to the Force, we were able to control the trailer’s brakes with the Smart Brake Control System, which provides control and safety on a steep grade. Also the Bosch-designed electric motor supplied more than enough power to maneuver with little to no effort on the part of the user. The heavy-duty 4’-wide tires maintained traction on concrete as well as gravel and even in wet grass when loaded. The Force dolly proved its functionality regardless of terrain, and that could come in super handy for those parking boats, campers or anything else with a trailer ball where the concrete ends. But the most striking feature of the Force electric trailer dolly was how easy it made maneuvering the boat. With precise and easy-to-use controls, all the stress was taken out of navigating tight corners and turns in forward and reverse. We put the boat into spots we wouldn’t even attempt using a truck. Built of quality materials, powder-coated and compact enough to fit in the trunk of an SUV, Parkit360’s electric trailer dollies are a great tool for anyone who pulls a trailer.
Spider King rod holders make your fishing more productive. A modular Spider King rod holder system lets a fisherman “rig, cast and relax” with as many as eight lines in the water. And the same system can also keep a drink and tackle on hand. The plates attach to the bottom of the boat seat using existing factory holes, therefore there is no need to drill. Accessories include rod holders, drink holder, tackle holder and tackle/drink holder. We also offer outriggers by the pair in single, double and a four-rod holder gunnel-mount spider rig. Spider King products are made in the USA of 100 percent marine grade aluminum and they are powder coated so there is no maintenance or cleaning. Most items are available in black, white and argent silver. Visit the Spider King website to view all of their fine products.

MARINETECH TROLLMASTER PRO 3+ Trolling is not as fun or effective for the guy tied to the motor. The world’s leading remote throttle control for gas-powered auxillary outboards is now available with wireless remote control. TROLLMaster Pro 3+ is an angler’s dream, allowing the angler to maintain optimum trolling speeds to within 1/10 mph. Slow trolling anglers understand that boat speed can make or break the day’s catch. TROLLMaster maximizes the time spent in the ‘sweet spot.’ Catch more fish with the freedom of movement that wireless control offers. Additional features include momentary ‘max throttle’ burst function for quick response or for ‘fluttering’ baits; idle/resume speed, left and right turn push button control. The hand-held remote is ergonomically designed for hours
of comfort. The remote is water resistant and comes with detachable lanyard and backlit LCD display for positive visibility in dark conditions. Engine specific throttle/hardware kits fit neatly under the cowling and are available to fit most brands of kicker motors. TROLLMaster also allows the angler to control the auxiliary 4 stroke’s steering with the addition of Panther’s Electro Steer drive units. The Panther T-4 and T-5 Electro Steer units are designed to remotely steer ‘kicker’ motors from anywhere on the boat. They mount on the tilt-tube and can be installed in minutes. Electro Steer units are available in fresh and saltwater models.

Mercury Unrolls Advanced New Features For Joystick Piloting
F
or almost 80 years, Mercury Marine has been the world’s leading manufacturer of recreational marine engines. The broad range of marine propulsion spans from 2.5hp to 1,700hp in Mercury’s new racing sterndrive engine. Over the past decade, Mercury has invested more than $800 million in research and development and expansion into its global headquarters in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. That investment has allowed the company to grow its employee base from 1,400 in 2009 to more than 3,200 in 2017—which includes more than 700 engineers. The investment has also allowed Mercury to continue its cadence of averaging one new product launch every six weeks. Today, Mercury is more than an engine company. It’s a marine propulsion solution company that not only has a portfolio of engines for any boater, but also the technology to enhance the boating experience. Mercury’s ecosystem of technology is unmatched in the marine industry and features Joystick Piloting for outboards or inboards, SkyHook virtual anchoring, Vessel View mobile and Active Trim. All four products work together with the engine to create the perfect experience on the water and allow boaters to Go Boldly. The latest innovation from Mercury is an enhancement for Mercury

Joystick-equipped vessels. Designed for convenient purchase as downloadable content (DLC) from Mercury’s GoFree store, Skyhook Advanced Features provides Joystick vessels with even better positioning control in specific situations. Boaters and anglers who love the way Mercury’s GPS-enabled Skyhook lets their vessel maintain a steady position while waiting for a bridge opening or hold over a reef, will be sure to appreciate Skyhook Advanced Features. New Skyhook Advanced Features include: • Heading Adjust provides Joystick operators with the ability to adjust the heading lock in 1- and 10-degree increments while SkyHook is active, making vessel control even more precise. • BowHook can be used to unlock heading and just maintain position, allowing the boat to point in whatever direction the winds and currents dictate. This feature is useful when a locked-in heading is not necessary. • DriftHook lets the operator maintain heading and unlock the position of the vessel allowing winds and currents to move the vessel along. Adjustments of 1- and 10-degree increments can be made while drifting when bundled with Heading Adjust. In addition, Mercury continues to advance its Vessel View mobile technology and roll it out around the world. The VesselView Mobile app instantly provides users access to their boat’s SmartCraft digital data in the palm of their hand. SmartCraft® is a fully integrated suite of digital technologies, including marine gauges, sensors, vessel systems and computercontrolled features, that gives users a higher level of control over their boat’s propulsion and electrical systems. Now, with Mercury Marine’s VesselView Mobile, users can see SmartCraft engine data right on the screen of their mobile device. The app also includes useful new features such as Maintenance Reminders, Mapping, Performance Summary, and Fault Code Diagnostics. VesselView Mobile makes preparing for and spending a day on the water easier, safer and more enjoyable by letting users perform functions from their mobile device. in the forward section—which can also be converted to an optional livewell. The helm’s reversible seat has a cooler as its base, perfect for keeping beverages or snacks iced. The boat’s aft section features two jump seats flanking a recirculating livewell. Standard power is Mercury Marine’s 115 HP 4-Stroke outboard, with an optional 150 HP 4-Stroke also available. Anglers can also add a bow trolling motor, pedestal bow fishing seat, and an additional livewell forward of the helm console. “This boat is our largest center console model yet, and an affordable way to get out and enjoy family fishing, cruising or any number of dayboat activities,” said Bayliner’s President, Keith Yunger. “Its roominess and versatility are exceptional. When you factor in the price, it’s a value you’ll be hard pressed to beat anywhere.”
SPECIFICATIONS Continuing on the success of its innovative Element M-Hull design, Bayliner has created the Element F21, its latest and largest self-bailing center console design to-date with . The Element F21 is built for family fishing and other day-boat activities with the same clean, open layout the Element F-Series is becoming known for. It gives anglers remarkable stability provided by the M-Hull, and it has a slightly deeper entry V than its couterparts, a feature boaters interested in this size range will appreciate. The F21’s bow features an anchor locker, and two large bow storage lockers perfect for keeping a variety of gear secure. The helm has plenty of space for optional electronics and includes a storage compartment

FREEDIVING – TRY IT!
W
hile visiting a friend of mine about 15 years ago, I noticed a book on his coffee table. It was called “Bluewater Hunting and Freediving” by Terry Maas, and it had the photo of a diver holding a bluefin tuna on the front cover. I already enjoyed hunting on scuba for groupers and snappers in my backyard, but the thought of spearing a tuna intrigued me to no end… and the thought of freediving also caught my attention. I had a hard time finding like-minded friends to dive with at first, as freediving was not a mainstream activity in Florida at the time. After researching a bit, I found a freediving school called Performance Freediving International and signed up for a course. I also found a freedive spearfishing club, which consisted of about 10 guys and no women. To this day, I give the same advice to anyone who wants to learn: “Take a class from a freedive agency, and join a local club so you can make friends and perhaps find a mentor.” Before the class, I had never tried to hold my breath while holding still in a pool—called static apnea. I was predicting that I would be a one-minute diver, but after some instruction I held my breath for four minutes. Most importantly, I learned how to avoid a “blackout” and how to rescue a blacked-out diver. We were taught the importance of the buddy system and one-up/one-down diving. While these classes will at least double your breath-hold time, learning the safety aspects is even more important. Fifteen years later, I can look back and say that learning to freedive opened a whole new underwater world for me. Now that I’m an oldster in the sport, I marvel at the growth rate, the number of agencies offering classes, the number of clubs in the area, and the large number of people that are in those clubs. It’s wonderful to see so many young people enjoying the sport. Lest I give the impression that freediving is a young people’s activity or something that super-athletes do, let me debunk that myth. I have met overweight smokers that were very good at it, and I’ve been diving with 80 year olds who were still enjoying it. Freediving is for anyone

who is willing to give Photo by Joe Marino it a try. Whether it’s to spearfish, experience the ocean in a different way, or simply find your inner-self at the bottom of the ocean, it’s an activity that anyone can enjoy. It’s a natural, satisfying and spiritual experience to hold one’s breath and become one with the ocean. If you have the slightest interest, do not be intimidated; it’s actually very easy. Just give it a try… you might like it! P.S. Terry Maas just came out with an updated digital version of the book, and I am honored that he featured my worldrecord yellowfin tuna. Franklin County Fla.,
A Red Snapper Paradise
T
he Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission recently announced a 78-day recreational harvest season for red snapper along Florida’s Gulf Coast. The dates include Saturdays and Sundays, starting the first Saturday in May, then daily, starting May 27 through July 9. Following that, they will be open again on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in September and October, plus Labor Day. See www.myfwc.com for more details and up-to-date information. This is exciting news for anglers who visit the Gulf Coast to catch and eat these tasty fish. Charter captains are expecting to haul many snapper from the waters along Franklin County and are no doubt pleased to have the extra days to provide more opportunities for their clients. People all across the country seem fascinated by these bright-red, beaming finfish and understandably so. If you’ve ever tasted them, you know they’re delightful. If you’ve ever caught one, you know what a fight they provide. Snapper fishing in this area is without a doubt a family oriented adventure. This is not a complicated fish to target, but they do get big so small children may require help. Drop live or cut bait in front of them in a variety of presentations and depths, and provided they’re present, they will typically pounce on your hook. A simple dropper loop rig is easy to tie and extremely effective for presenting both live or cut bait. Weight sizes will often vary depending on depth and current.
State law requires the use of circle hooks and that you have a de-hooking device on board your vessel. The requirement to have a venting tool on board has been removed, but I highly suggest you have one. Fish coming from deep water often need to be vented and you should be able to perform this duty on any fish you don’t plan to keep. Chumming for red snapper is perhaps the most fun, and the crystal clear Gulf water here is perfect for this technique. A pile of chopped cut bait thrown over the side will bring the biggest ones in the school right up to the boat. Drift a small chunk of that same bait on a 5/0 circle hook along with the next handful thrown over, and you can watch the fish you want come right up and eat it… now hold on because that fish is headed straight for the bottom! Restrictive harvest measures taken over the last several years are perhaps paying off, but some would argue that the snapper population has never been in decline. Many local anglers would tell you that there are, and always have been, plenty of them to be had. There’s no shortage of first-rate charter captains available to get you out for a red snapper adventure, but booking early is always a good idea. fter more than a decade of fishing Bassmaster Southern Open events, local Florida angler John Cox finally won his first one. The event, held on the famed Tennessee River impoundment Lake Chickamauga, was a three-day tournament that was very tough on most of the anglers including Cox. The 31-year-old angler is the reigning FLW Tour Champion and he is on a hot streak. After learning the 2018 Bassmaster Classic would be hosted at South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell, he set his sights on winning an Open event to punch his ticket for a Bassmaster Classic berth. Cox is known on the bass circuit as one of the best sight-fishing anglers. He used his keen eyesight and knowledge of spawning bass to win on Chickamauga. Cox was one of the few anglers who exclusively sight fished throughout the second Southern Open of the season. It was an effective technique for several of the tournament’s top finishers. He put himself in contention for the win with a 22-6 limit on Thursday, followed by a 25-7 bag on Friday. His two-day total of 47-13 gave him more than a 3-pound lead heading into Saturday’s action, and his 20-6 limit on Saturday was heavy enough to secure the win. The Mud Hole Custom Tackle pro, who hails from Debary, Fla., picked up a contingency berth in the 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’s Sporting Goods with the victory. Fishing all three Southern Opens this season will solidify that berth. He also won more than $8,000 in cash, as well as a Triton 19 TrX and Mercury 200 Pro XS boat/motor package worth $40,000. “I’ve tried so long to win one of these Opens, it seems like forever,” Cox said. “I started fishing the Opens when I was 19. It’s where I started, really, so this definitely is a special thing for me. Building my own custom MHX rods is key for my success, because I can build technique-special rods and actions for different conditions.” Cox won the Lake Hartwell FLW Tour event last season and is excited about his chances in the Bassmaster Classic there. He won the Hartwell event last summer fishing the back of creeks getting his aluminum bass boat in places where most anglers could not go. Although the Classic will be held on Hartwell in the early spring, Cox is pleased to be fishing his first Classic event. Cox is having a decent start to the FLW Tour season, as well. Fishing in his own backyard on the third event at the Harris Chain of Lakes in Leesburg, Fla., Cox was super excited to fish his home waters. He led the event for the first three days to finish in third place and enjoy a nice payday. Cox finished in eighth in the recent FLW Event on Arkansas’ Beaver Lake after going out in fourth place on the final day. It was his second top-10 finish on the tour with just two events left this season.

The Heavyweight Experience of Alaska Saltwater Fishing By Christopher Batin
I
t’s easy to understand why anglers delight in preparing for an Alaska fishing expedition. Some of the thrill is the anticipation, in getting gear and tackle ready, the big reels, 12-ounce and larger jigs, and huge circle hooks that have been honed to hypodermic-grade sharpness. It’s ensuring the cooler is properly marked with your name and address to transport the fillets you’ll be taking home, and most importantly, the arm curls and circuit training you’re doing. The workouts are necessary, and it’s easy to see why. Alaska saltwater fishing is not for the weak of arm or back. Halibut get big in Alaska, with fish reaching weights of 400 pounds, and lengths of 9 feet long. Even the 100-pounders you’re most likely to catch can slug it out through 300 feet of pump-and-lift jabs, and rocket back to the bottom to start all over again for round two. There’s no giving up, no taking a breather for more than a few seconds. Once you are engaged, you fight to your limit. Your arm will get numb at times, your hand pulses with fatigue, and your back quivers in spasmodic tension, but the smile frozen on your face says it all. This is saltwater fishing as good as it gets. While I enjoy slugging it out with halibut, I also enjoy a dukefest with Alaska’s other saltwater species. Lingcod get to 60-plus pounds, and usually attack the rockfish I’m reeling up. With their sharp rows of teeth and sinister look, these water wolves of the deep are among the tastiest fish to catch, as well as the forage they feed on; the 4- to 20-pound rockfish of various species, which are among the best-tasting fish in the north country. But many anglers will want to jig for the five species of Pacific salmon: kings to 70 pounds, coho salmon to 20, and 4- to 8-pound pink salmon. While they might be the smallest of the Pacific salmon, ocean-bright pinks can max out an 8-weight fly rod. Best of all, odd-numbered years see the return of millions of fish, when creeks and rivers burst at the seams with their numbers. In Valdez alone, as many as 11 million salmon have returned in past years. Anglers delight in catching them along the shoreline near the Solomon Gulch hatchery. There are many places to use as a base camp to start your excursion. At the end of the Richardson Highway, Tim Bouchard of Valdez Outfitters likes fishing for big halibut on the outer rim of Prince William Sound, where it meets the abysmal Gulf of Alaska and its continental shelf dropoff to 14,000 feet. Worry not, Bouchard fishes hotspots like Montague Island, where the big fish feed in the shallow 60- to 120-foot depths. He guided his client to catch the 2016 Valdez Halibut Derby winner last year with a 270-pound fish. For a taste of home-cooking mixed with a professional fishing lodge, Petersburg Sportfishing offers prime fishing on the Inside Passage in the seldom-fished waters near Petersburg. Anglers can opt for boat rentals for do-it-yourself fishing or guided saltwater fishing for salmon, halibut,
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 1
rockfish and lingcod. This family-run business offers not only fishing, but a variety of adventures and tips on enjoying the many fishing and area glacier attractions, as well as prime bear viewing and some fabulous cutthroat and rainbow trout fishing. Of course, Kodiak Island offers superb deepsea fishing, bordering the Aleutian trench. Huge halibut migrate from waters bordering these dropoffs and into the shallower food-rich shorelines of Kodiak and Afognak islands. While most fish range from 30 to 100 pounds, fish to 300 pounds and heavier have been caught off Kodiak. Fish this size measure 8 feet in length. Kodiak anglers fish shallow water, from 60 to 180 feet. King salmon fishing is among the best in Alaska saltwater and runs best from April through early mid July. The best thing about fishing Kodiak is short travel time. The best hotspots are often accessed in less than an hour, which offers more time for fishing. Also, because of the remote location of the lodge, there is little if any sportfishing competition. In Prince William Sound, Alaska Wilderness Outfitters offers a floating cabin for do-it-yourselfers who know how to catch salmon, halibut, rockfish and lingcod in nearby waters. Each of the four, fully equipped wannigans includes a full kitchen, crab traps boats and motors and directions on where the fishing is best. They’ll transport you to the cabins from Cordova, to one of several bays protected from big-water weather. They also offered guided options in some of the most salmon-rich waters of south-central Alaska. Co-owner Katie Prijatel said guests clean and pack their catch in coolers. Alaska Wilderness Outfitters flies in daily to pick up the fish and drop off more ice. Then the fish is vacuum packed, boxed and frozen for the trip home. Chris Batin is editor of The Alaska Angler, and producer of the instructional DVD, “Underwater Secrets of Halibut, Rockfish and Lingcod.” For more than 40 years, he has run The Alaska Angler Information Service, which is a one-on-one consultation that helps anglers plan their Alaska fishing adventures. Introducing the 2017
Caribbean Triple Crown Poker Run
P
rep your engines for the biggest nautical event in the Caribbean. The three-run circuit will take place in the most beautiful destinations in the region: the British Virgin Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and St. Maarten. The first run of the series was held May 28 at the Leverick Bay Marina and Resort on the island of Virgin Gorda in the BVI. The next run will be the Stars and Stripes Poker Run on July 2 at Yacht Haven Grande on St. Thomas, USVI. The final run of the series takes place at The Yacht Club at Isle de Sol in St. Maarten on July 29. The winner of The Caribbean Triple Crown Poker Run series will collect $20,000 in cash and prizes and the prestigious IGY Cup. “This will be an unparalleled event that will take place in the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean,” said Nick Willis, founder of the Leverick Bay Poker Run. “We’re excited and so grateful for the support of the boating enthusiasts that participate.” The Leverick Bay Poker Run started 16 years ago when Willis put together an event with the purpose of attracting tourists to
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 2
Virgin Gorda. He never imagined the event would grow into what it has today—a national holiday with over 300 participating boats. The Leverick Bay Poker run was the catalyst for the development of other poker runs. The Caribbean Triple Crown Poker Run unifies the three major poker runs. “It’s a privilege to be a part of the Caribbean Triple Crown Poker Run,” said Brian Deher, general manager of IGY Marinas’ Yacht Club at Isle de Sol. “With outstanding marinas in two of the three destinations, IGY Marinas is a natural partner for the series.” Phil Blake, general manager of IGY Marinas’ Yacht Haven Grande in St. Thomas, shared his enthusiasm saying, “We are very excited to be hosting the fourth annual Stars and Stripes Poker Run and to be part of the Caribbean Triple Crown Poker Run series. The Yacht Haven Grande team is looking very forward to being on hand in St. Maarten when the IGY Cup is presented.” The Caribbean Triple Crown Poker Run organization is an official member of the Florida Power Boating Club & Poker Runs of America. Several member boats will be coming down from Florida to participate. “It has been an honor working with Nick Willis on developing the BVI Poker Run,” said Javier Lopez Matos, executive director of the Caribbean Triple Crown Poker Run. Launching the Caribbean Triple Crown Poker Run is one of the most exhilarating events in my life. Having the support of people like Stu Jones of the Florida Power Boating Club, IGY Marinas and so many others is beyond gratifying, it is an honor.” Caribbean Triple Crown Poker Run: • May 28-Leverick Bay Marina and Resort Virgin Gorda, BVI • July 2-Yacht Haven Grande Marina, St. Thomas, USVI • July 29-The Yacht Club at Isle de Sol, St. Maarten The winner of all three events will be presented with the IGY Cup, plus $20,000 in cash and prizes. MURPHY AREA MOUNTAIN LAKES Summer Scouting Report for Murphy Area Lakes By Aaron Kephart
B
y the time you are reading this, summer should be in full swing, and with it comes a change in fishing patterns and species availability on Hiwassee, Chatuge, and Apalachia lakes. Summer also brings consistency in weather, something that has been sorely lacking this spring. With that in mind, I would like to do a species by species breakdown on what to expect in the next couple of months on Murphy area lakes. Smallmouth Bass-the late-April flooding on the Tennessee River System dictated that no water could be moved through either Hiwassee or Apalachia for an extended period of time. This really hurt the smallmouth fishing during that stretch. The good news is that timeframe also coincided with the smallmouth spawn, and I would like to think that this will be a good recruitment year with the stable water levels on Apalachia. With that in mind, air conditioners are running and water levels are stabilizing, so
it is simply a matter of time before the generators start pumping water and the smallmouth start chewing. Summer is always one of the best times to catch the smallmouth of a lifetime on Apalachia. Lure choices and location can vary, but my personal favorite place, time, and fish
creeks around cover, on all of our area lakes. Some topwater bite will linger into June. Spots will be on the main channel ledges and the ends of points. This is a great time of year to go after big Chatuge spots, as they will often be found in bunches. You also never know when you will run
to target is giant smallmouth on Apalachia, June through September. Spotted and Largemouth Bass-largemouth will be hitting best early and late in the day, in the
into a big hybrid or two. Walleye and Stripers-This has been the best spring in a long time for me on Hiwassee for walleye and stripers. As usual, walleye are scattered (we have caught them from the dam to the headwaters recently), unpredictable, and hard to catch, and they certainly aren’t there in huge numbers, but there is a realistic chance to possibly luck into finding one (especially at night). Striper fishing has been exceptional, with a lot of 7 to 13 pound fish showing up. Summer is my favorite time of year to chase stripers on Hiwassee, but keep in mind, early in the day is always better for linesiders. Crappie and Catfish-I wait all year for the crappie night bite to start. Last year was the best I had ever seen in over 30 years of fish-

ing this lake. We caught huge numbers, and we also caught some big crappie and quite a few respectable flatheads. I am very excited about the possibilities this summer. I took a scouting trip the other night and, although we only fished about an hour and a half, I was very impressed by what I saw, and I am ready to start working the night shift for these tasty fish. Trout-Apalachia trout have been hit or miss, which I contribute to the lack of current (it affects them similarly to how it affects the smallmouth). We might catch 15 one trip, none the next, and 6 the next. However, the 3 biggest trout ever landed in my boat were caught in the summertime, and I anticipate a good bite this summer. I guide for just about everything that swims around here, so if any of these options interest you, or if you want more information, please give me a call at 865-466-1345 or email me at mtnlakesguide@outlook.com. LAKE HIWASSEE
June Forecast—Lake Hiwassee By Shane Goebel
S
ummer is finally here. The weather is beautiful, the water is warmer, and the fish are going crazy—it’s the perfect time to “hit the lake” and catch some amazing fish! What’s the best way to do that? By booking a trip with Murphy, NC’s #1 striper guide: Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service. Lake Hiwassee is an unbelievable for summer fishing. The stripers are schooled up in large numbers and feeding heavily on live bait, as are the smallmouth and spotted bass. In fact, it’s not uncommon for us to boat 30-50 fish per trip out here on this serene Western North Carolina lake. This makes it a perfect option for everyone from the kids to hardcore anglers. Currently, Lake Hiwassee is 7 feet below full pool but is expected to be full by June 1st. Water clarity
is clear and slightly stained in the rivers, and water temps are in the mid to upper 70s. Striper fishing remains excellent. We have been loading the boat with some big fish in good quantities. The early-morning and evening bites are your best times to see action. In the early-morning hours, we are still pulling planer boards and free lines with live blueback herring. Keep your free lines 100-150 feet behind the boat, and stagger your baits behind the boards. As the sun comes up in the later morning hours, start to focus on deeper water. Switch to downlines and add a little split shot to your free lines. Target creek mouths and rocky points. As the top-water bite has also been excellent, keep a spook or a Red Fin at the ready to snag those surface-busting fish.
Smallmouth and spotted bass fishing has been outstanding, too. These fish are finally off the beds and are schooled up. We’ve been wearing out some nice smallmouths and spots every trip lately. Work shallow humps, creek mouths, and clay banks. Also, target brush piles throughout the lake. Downlining blueback herring has worked best for us, but we are also picking up some quality fish on jerkbaits, flukes, and spooks. Look for these bass to continue to school through the rest of next month. June is a fantastic month for catching some big fish on this lake. From smallmouth bass to hard fighting stripers, we have many great opportunities to catch a number of fish species on Hiwassee Lake. Fishing The Valley River
R
By Matt Walters
iver fishing in far west North Carolina? You may have fished Lake Hiawassee, Lake Nottely, and Lake Nantahala. Well…..They each have their own local river. The Hiawassee River, met by the Valley River, flows north into the Lake. The Valley River begins in the foothills of the Nantahala Forest just east of Andrews. It is fed from natural springs and winds its way westward through the valley between Andrews and Murphy. Winding may be an understatement, more like quadruple S curves as it criss-crosses highways 19/74. This 15 miles stretch goes widely unnoticed and under
fished (until now). The Valley River is hatchery supported and stocked March-September. In addition to care of our waterways, The Hiawassee River Watershed Coalition has created ‘put ins’ on the Valley creating better access for fishing. If you don’t mind wading and hitting the holes, the Valley is for you. During spring and early summer, the stockers hold in deeper pools. These pools are easily recognizable and you can bet on hooking up. Success can be had with rooster tails, shad raps, twisters, and your typical live trout baits. As the weather cools in the fall, the trout move up river (east) to the small streams to spawn.
Smallmouth, catfish, and brim from Lake Hiawassee are also abundant in the Valley as they seek more food and cooler waters during the summer. There are many more outdoor activities in the Murphy area, but the river fishing should be at the top of your list.

How My Love of Fly Fishing Was Restored By Justin Mickens
F
ly fishing has been a part of my life for a long time. Every spare moment I had, I would spend on the water. Warm water, cold water, a bream pond-as long as it was water I could fish, it didn’t matter. I lived, breathed, and existed to fly fish. If I wasn’t fishing, I was tying. I spent my days at work dreaming of my next trip. When I had a free day, I would spend daylight to dark casting. I felt free from the restraints of life while on the water, until fly fishing became my job. I was working as a Paramedic, when I was introduced to fly fishing. My brother in law showed me a roll cast, and handed me down some leaky waders and boots. I only had a Wal-Mart combo, with level line, but I was going to conquer Nantahala. In the beginning, I was discouraged. I read everything I could, trying to gain as much knowledge as I could. I memorized hatch charts, tied flies, and fished every moment I could find. It took
me two weeks before I achieved my first bite. The fish hit so hard it jerked the line out of my hand. Needless to say, I missed that fish, but I was the one hooked, figuratively and physically! I tried to set the hook like I did when I bass fished. It didn’t go well. That’s the moment I realized I could actually do it though. I started paying more attention to the fish. I watched how they would feed, and interact together. That’s when I noticed that stocked fish act like bass. They are super territorial and opportunistic feeders. That moment, something clicked in my head, and I understood what it would take to catch those fish. I was unstoppable in my addiction. I had just moved back from New Mexico and needing a job, I stopped in the local fly shop and talked to the owner. It had been my local shop, and I had bought most of my equipment there. I was hired to work one day a week, but within a month, I was made manager. I
poured my passion into everything I did. I talked to customers for hours, explaining techniques, and helping with tactics. I ran a “fishing buddies” program on my days off. Over time, however, it started becoming a chore. I would dread going out with other people. Then it became a chore just to fish. Everything seemed to lose its luster. I just wanted to sit at the house and relax. Fishing became a job. After buying the local fly shop with my best friends, we had the worst fall on record for the store. During this fall, I had a guy come in who had lived in the area, but never fished. He spent days in the store with me talking, and tying. Even though I had lost my passion, he was developing his. He was always smiling, talking my ear off about a new fly pattern, or talking about his latest trip. I began to envy him. He has what I wanted back. I wanted to be that excited about fly fishing again. Through our talks, I began to
realize what I was missing. I needed to fish for me again. I needed to fish where I wanted, not where I thought I needed to for the store. I needed to be a little selfish, and make fishing about me again. It has taken some time, but the excitement is coming back. I find myself day dreaming about being on the stream. The days I make it to the stream, I spend for me. Whenever you’re visiting a fly shop, remember, your enthusiasm is just as important to the person working there as their knowledge is to you. We spend all day, everyday, emerged in the world of fly fishing but sometimes, we might need a customer’s excitement for the sport, to bring us out of a “funk”. Thank you, Greg, for all your support, and for helping me remember why I love what I do.

LAKE CHATUGE
Lake Chatuge - June Hybrids By Darren Hughes
F
or us, the most exciting trips of the year begin in June. Summer fishing on Lake Chatuge, which borders Western North Carolina and North Georgia, really gets fired up. With warmer water temps, the hybrids and bass really school up, which means we are able to load the boat with tons of trophy hybrids, spotted, and largemouth bass. Currently, Lake Chatuge is at full pool. Water temps are in the high 70s, and water clarity is clear throughout the lake. Hybrid fishing is great as the fish are schooling in large numbers, and we are catching some big quantities. Most of our hybrids are averaging 8-12 pounds. These are some of Lake Chatuge’s hardest-fighting fish, and we’re having a blast wearing them out. The early morning bite has been prime. Look for schools of fish off shallow humps along the main channel, clay banks, and off points. Downlining live blueback herring has been the best technique. Search out your areas and watch your electronics. When you mark fish, drop your lines. Fish will be slightly shallower in the early morning hours and will move to deeper water by mid-morning. Top-water bite remains very good as well. When
these fish start busting on bait, it’s always a good idea to have a plug, spook, or red fin at the ready. Spotted bass fishing remains excellent, too. We are still catching some huge spots throughout the day, and it’s not uncommon to put 30-40 of these feisty fish in the boat in one trip. Early morning top-water bite has been strong. Top-water plugs, spooks, and jerk baits have worked well. Our downline bite has also been very productive, especially in the mid-morning hours. In eral Store. And whether you’re a of the best spotted bass and hyterms of location, the upper end seasoned angler or just starting brids in the area. NANTAHALA
Nantahala River – One Of The Top 100 Trout Streams In The U.S.
W
By Ken Kastorff
ith the onset to summer, delayed harvest streams are open to catch and keep, and warmer weather will bring warm water to most of Western North Carolina streams and rivers. While it will get harder to find quality trout fishing escapes, trout anglers can still find some good fishing opportunities in our area by going up higher in the surrounding mountains. Heading into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and fishing upper reaches of Deep Creek, Nolan Creek, Forney Creek, or Hassel Creek will give the diehard trout angler some great summer options. There is one exception to these smaller, sometimes hard to get to, streams for outstanding summer trout angling - and that is the Nantahala River. The Nantahala River is unique to the area due to the consistent, 50-degree year round water temperatures. It is an outstanding trout fishery and has been referred to as one of the top 100 trout steams in the United States. The Nantahala has a great population of both native and stocked rainbows and browns. Two state record brown trout have come from its waters. Two years ago, I had a guest catch a brown that would have easily been another state record if we had kept and registered the fish. We released this 34 inch beautiful female brown back into the river. I hope she will produce many more just like her.
The Nantahala River has a fixed release schedule each day of the week. Early morning and late in the afternoon/evening, the river levels will drop and it is possible to wade fish. On normal days from 9:00 am till 5:00-6:00 pm, the river will have too much water flowing in it for most fly anglers to wade safely. This is prime fishing time! I catch far more fish on trips during the power generation release than any other time. Hands down, the best way to fish the river at that time is to do a float trip. A float trip gives the angler the opportunity to cover lots more water. It is the most enjoyable way to fish the river. There are a couple of Forest Service licensed outfitters that offer float trips on the Nantahala. Commercial trips must be licensed in order to legally fish the river. This helps make sure that there are not too many boats fishing the river on a given day, thus providing a much better quality trip. Guides have to have a minimum number of trips on the river and also must have first aid and CPR training, and be insured. The tailwater section of the Nantahala River is eight miles long. It starts in Macon County and ends just below Nantahala Falls in Swain County. The river drops almost 30 feet per mile ,which is much more than most tailwater streams. If you are planning to fish it, definitely remember your supply of split shot or tie some special weighted

flies. This is nymph-fishing paradise. It is a challenge to fish the fast deep, water here. This is by far my favorite guide trip as it gives me an opportunity to show both new and experience fly anglers different techniques on how to fish this kind of fast water. While the Nantahala is a popular rafting river, with a good guide at the oars, you will not have any trouble catching a good days worth of beautiful rainbows and, an occasion, large brown. The trout are so accustomed to the river traffic that it is not unusual to catch fish out from under a passing raft. The river fishes very well all summer long. Later in August, weekday traffic drops off once school starts and that is the same time the brown trout will start moving. In late August and September, an Angler can have a morning of great nymph fishing and follow up with an afternoon of outstanding dry fly fishing. During the peak of the summer season, the only day we try not to book trips on

the Nantahala are on Saturdays. Saturday’s are a great time to check out some fun smallmouth fishing on the Little Tennessee. That is the other preferred summer angling destination in our area. Here again, it pays to float the river. You will get the opportunity to get off of the beaten path and cover a lot more of the river. You will find small mouth, spotted bass, red eye and brim. This is a wonderful float through spectacular country. More about the Little Tennessee in next month’s edition of The Angler Magazine WNC.

ayday”…the definition is an emergency word used internationally as a distress signal. I think we all know that, but have you ever needed to use it? This story starts out in December, 2002. It was only 3 months after my wife and I came back from one of my favorite places, ever - Almont, Colorado. You see, we go there once a year in September, for my birthday, to fish the Taylor and Gunnison Rivers. In December of 2002, I had a blockage in my heart, in the lower left artery. Just before surgery, I said to the surgeon, “if I come out of this in one piece, I’m going to Colorado in May, then again in September.” Well, it turned out okay, and Dottie, my wife, and I headed off to Colorado. Everyone was worried about me, so to reassure them that I was playing it safe, I would take some walkie-talkie’s with me. The first day, we tested them out. “Hi Dot, can you hear me? 10-4.” Dottie replied, “Yes, how do you feel. 10-4.” “I feel good…going fishing. 10-4.” I checked in at the office to leave a

walkie-talkie with them in case I needed help. We know the owners, as well as the other people in the office, very well. Nice people. So, I went down to the river to find a spot that I could fish without taking any chances. After a while, I got a little braver, moving around as if nothing ever happened to me. Then, while hoping from rock to rock, I fell, lost my breath, and hurt myself, losing consciousness. (What a dumb move!) Gaining consciousness, I grabbed my walkie-talkie and called out the infamous words. “Mayday! - Mayday! No answer…Mayday! - Mayday! Still no answer. I laid there, dazed, thinking, “can’t they hear me?” Mayday! – Mayday! Finally, I got an answer; “ED WE’RE BUSY SERVING LUNCH, QUIT FOOLING AROUND.” “I’m not fooling around, I’m down river and need help!” I replied. “YOUR’RE SUCH A KIDDER.” Was the response. Twenty minutes later, I regrouped, picked myself up,
and started walking back to the office. Once I got there, I saw the owner, Steve. He said, “ED, YOU KNOW BETTER THAN TO PULL THAT STUNT, ESPECIALLY DURING LUNCH. IT’S BUSY AS HELL.” I just looked at him and said, “I apologize Steve…you’re right, I should know better, but I almost got you!” I

had lunch and went back to my cabin to meet my wife. She said, “Well, how did you do?” I said, “I think these walkie-talkie’s are a waste of time. I had trouble trying to get you. Must have been out of range.” Dottie said, “That’s okay, honey. At least it’s a beautiful MAY DAY!”

uckasegee River in Swain County was quickly invaded by twenty-two teenagers from Swain County High School’s first-ever fishing club, The Swainglers, on a warm spring day in April. We parked the bus at a Bryson City landmark, Nabers Drive-In. Students rushed to the river shore to cast their lines and wet their hooks. Several students fished behind Nabers, while several others walked through the briars, weeds, and trees to get to their “honey hole”. Moments later, I could hear students excitedly announcing, “Ms. Parris, I got one!” I then trudged through the weeds to see their trophies before they released them back into the water. The smiles on their faces were worth every second of almost falling off the riverbank as I made my way through the dense weeds and poison oak. The catches of the
day were several brown and rainbow trout and two spotted bass. I can’t leave out the huge stick that one Swaingler, Chance, reeled in! Spinner baits were the popular, and most rewarded, lures of the trip. The fish couldn’t get enough of them! Time passed quickly during our club time, but the students and I got to enjoy the good food from Nabers. There is nothing better than a Nabers Cherry Lemon Mountain Dew and Cheeseburger after working up an appetite, while enjoying the beauty and wildlife of the Great Smoky Mountains! We soon returned to school full of energy and excitement, ready to face the rest of the school day.

H
ey folks! It’s been a great month for the local mountain anglers. The recent rains have our streams and rivers in good shape and I’m hoping we can continue to get rain regularly. If you are looking for a great fishing destination this month, I would suggest a trip to Wolf Creek Lake in Jackson County. This lake is a mountain gem and you can expect to, pretty much, have the water to yourself except on holidays and weekends. The lake consists of 183 acres of fishable waters and is accessible to small and large boats. Its main water source comes from Tanasee Creek, then flows thru Wolf Creek’s earth dam, into Bear Creek Lake. The main fish most anglers go after are the trout, which are a mixture of hatchery-raised fish and wild trout, coming out of Tanasee Creek. These trout can be taken on about any bait or technique you enjoy. I usually slow troll small spoons, Repalas, and plastic baits, for them. The lake also holds a good number of walleye, crappie, small and largemouth bass, as well as bluegill. It’s a great getaway for family fishing and an angler will almost always catch a good

The launch is a single lane, concrete put-in with a small parking area, which shouldn’t be a problem unless it’s a holiday or weekend. Trolling on Fontana
J
une on Fontana is when I start thinking trolling , trolling, trolling. There is nothing more fun than throwing small jigs or jerkbaits to the bank, any bank, and catching fish after fish, regardless of the area, type of rock, or soil makeup. You can pretty much rely on this through the spring, but when June hits, you better start looking over your shoulder to the open water if you want to consistently catch fish. Our fish follow the shad out to open water after they spawn and basically hang out under bait schools, pushing them to the surface whenever they feel the urge to gorge a little. You can find fish off of points – walleye, in particular, will still relate to points and trolling across them, in 25-45 feet of water, will put you in the right place ‘til later in the summer when the water temperature really heats up. If

you mark fish, p ar t ic u l arly on a clay bottom, but can’t get them to bite, then try bumping the bottom with your downrigger ball. You have to pick your points, but many times this will stir things up and really put them on the feed. Our bass will relate to points but can just as easily hang out in 200 feet of water with nothing but flat channel below. These fish can be
spotted breaking in small schools and are usually eager to hit any small minnow type bait, spoon or jig. Trolling towards breaks allows an angler or two up front to throw at breaking fish, pinpointing their casts as quickly as possible after the break. If you can hit within 5 feet and 5 seconds, you are almost guaranteed a strike. Follow whatever your electronics dictate as to depth, fish may be all over the sur-

face and simultaneously at 50-60 feet. I try and run 5 or 6 rods at a time at the very least with a couple of flat lines, couple of weighted or lead core lines, and the downriggers set to whatever is showing as the deepest fish. Mixed bags are the rule with spots, whites, smallies, walleye, and trout - all in the mix. Watch out for other boaters, as some of them seem to put their hand over their eyes and drive blindly about, not paying anyone any attention. I have fantasized about throwing a 4 ounce weight into their boat to wake them up, but you can’t fix stupid or inattentiveness, so best to just try and stay out of their way, which is obviously the most effective alternative. Enjoy the weather, find a spot down lake from the crowd and fill your cooler with some varied and tasty filets. Later, Capt. James

“They Are Rising” At Cataloochee Valley By Dan Dry
C
ataloochee Valley is a walk back in time, all in itself. The old barns, homesites, and cemeteries are still there. So are the fishing spots. I was out last week limbering up the ole fly rod and trying to stay out of the trees. My favorite nymphs wouldn’t draw even a nibble. I sat on the bank to watch a few elk cross and eat a sandwich, and noticed a couple of swirls in the water. “Hmmm,” I thought, “what was that?” Putting my lunch debris back in my backpack, I saw a small fluttering moth hit the water and, in an instant, it disappeared! I eased down the bank and saw a couple more try to make it across the stream and finally, could see it clearly… It was a small moth with brown wings. Then, another trout rolled the water… Dig in tackle box time! Sitting there thinking about the old days when you just couldn’t run to town for bait; you had to use what the trout like that was available, on hand. Lucky for me, I had a moth looking fly that would work, but only one. Keeping in mind that the use of live bait is forbidden in Cataloochee Valley, I dug through my box and, luckily, had one that did look close to what I saw. It got tied on and about the 5th cast I had one! A couple of hours later, before the squirrels got a good look at it, I ended up with 5 total. Every other fly I tried did nothing for them. What did I learn on this venture? Pay attention to your surroundings at all times, including the small insects. Aside from absorbing the beauty of the valley’s wildlife; deer, turkey,
elk, and bear, my fishing would have been fruitless without that one fly. Most of the trout I caught that day were native. They seem to be picky about what they bite. However, even if I hadn’t caught one thing, the beauty of the valley and the clear water was worth the trip. There was one pesky gnat that seemed to come out of the leaves I was rustling that made me dig out my Thermocell to ward them off, I would recommend taking some type of repellent, those little devils can get nasty. And always respect the wildlife - the bear cubs are out with very protective moms. Enjoy your time in the valley. If you want to make a weekend of it, there are camping sites available for rent. THE HIGH COUNTRY
Early Summer Smallies On The Fly By Ethan Hollifield
R
iver Smallmouth are one of my favorite (if not my favorite - I know my trout bum friends will give me heck over this) freshwater species to target on the fly. This is my favorite time of year to chase smallmouth, and Western North Carolina has an abundance of smallmouth water, ranging from large river basins to low elevation creeks and streams. Pound for pound, these fish fight harder than any largemouth bass of a similar size, and are absolutely addicting to fish for. Here, we’ll go over some tips on gear and fishing techniques to go after mountain Smallies this time of year. Regarding tackle, I prefer a fast action rod in the 5 weight – 8 weight range, depending on the size/weight of the flies I’m using and the type of water I’m covering. The reel selection isn’t as important. Just make sure that you have a good quality reel with a larger arbor that won’t fail you on the water. There are a wide variety of lines that will work, but recently, I’ve been ex-
perimenting with Single Handed Spey lines for smallmouth and have found that they are excellent for covering water and making quick, long casts to likely holding spots. Saltwater tapered lines are also applicable for this purpose. You don’t need a fancy leader for these fish. I generally use a 9ft- 12ft leader going from a 30lb butt section to 1x or 2x tippet. For flies, I prefer impressionistic patterns that can imitate crayfish, hellgrammites, or baitfish: all of which smallmouth eat willingly when the opportunity arises. Subsurface patterns, like Clouser Minnows, Dave Huedas Creek Crawler, Tim’s Moppet, Murdich Minnows, etc. are all excellent patterns to use in almost any body of water. Surface poppers (either deer hair or foam),Todd’s Wiggle Minnow, or a Gurgler, are my go-to when I’m trying to seduce a smallmouth to the surface. Really, anything that has good action in or on top of the water will generally induce a take. My favorite colors are olive, brown,
16 WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA
JUNE 2017
white, or chartreuse/pink. Smallmouth, like other bass species, are ambush predators. In a river or creek, look for places where there are drastic changes in water depth or shadow lines created by streamside vegetation. Patches of grass, natural river foam, deep eddies, and rock ledges are all likely hiding places where they can stay out of the current and hidden from prey. Regardless of whether I’m fishing from a boat or wading, I generally try to make upstream presentations as much as possible. Try working a popper or a subsurface pattern with a slow, erratic retrieve that will keep the fly in the strike zone longer. If you’re fishing topwater exclusively, cast upstream or across, let the rings settle, and
twitch the rod tip to “pop” or otherwise, barely move the fly across the surface as it goes over fishy spots. More often than not, a smallie will come out of cover to investigate and eat the fly once it’s sitting dead still or on the fall. Let the fish tell you what sort of retrieve and presentation they want. If the fish are taking fly as soon as it hits the water, then you can become more aggressive with your presentation. I caution any dedicated trout bum that fly fishing for Smallmouth Bass is an addicting game. Once you’re hooked, it’s nearly impossible to get the image of an acrobatic and downright mean Smallie on the end of your line out of your head.

any men go fishing all of their lives without knowing it is not fish they are after.” - Henry David Thoreau. If you live in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina, it doesn’t take long to realize how true this statement is. I own Watauga River Fly Shop, just outside of Boone, NC, and I am blessed to have such great trout waters in my ‘backyard’ and to have such scenic surroundings to explore. If you have never fished in the area, we have hundreds of miles of fishable water, full of wild rainbows, browns, smallmouth, and our beloved Southern Appalachian Brook Trout. Of course, the state also stocks hundreds of miles of streams with trout as well. Trout thrive in cold, clean water and our cool summer temps and high elevation streams are a prime habitat for trout. Now, let’s talk about how to catch them! We get people in the shop everyday telling us that they aren’t having any success fishing for trout. There are many different ways to catch a fish, but we feel you will be the most successful and can cover a lot more
water fly fishing these streams. Trout can be very particular but if you can trigger in on what they are eating and present your fly to them well, you can catch a lot of fish. Trout spend their lives watching food come downstream to them, so presentation is key. You will be most successful positioning yourself downstream from where you want to fish and ‘dead drifting’ your flies down to the waiting trout. This means you want to watch the leaves, bubbles, or current and make sure your flies are drifting downstream just like everything else on the water. Not going faster, slower or across the stream. Trout can detect if your flies are not moving ‘naturally’ and that can keep them from eating your perfectly tied, Parachute Adams. If you’ve ever heard the term, ‘match the hatch,’ in a nutshell it means that you want to try to mimic whatever bugs you see while on the water. Trout will trigger in on these bugs and you will have greater success if you can fish a fly that has similar size, shape and color to what you are seeing hatch-
ing. There are many different ways to fish different flies, but a ‘dead drift’ is the most common and can be the most successful. Fly fishing isn’t rocket science and trout aren’t brain surgeons. It’s not as difficult as you’ve made it out to be. Of course, if you need any help, come by, give us a call or book one of our experienced guides to teach you how to be a successful trout
angler. I feel this is one of the best areas on the East Coast to fish for trout. When you go fishing here, you can easily find yourself lost in the beauty of the surroundings, listening to sounds of nature, and forget why you are even out here. Jeff Dean is the owner of Watauga River Fly Shop.

RIVER REFLECTIONS
The Big One By Daniel Day
I
grew up on a large piece of property in Western North Carolina near the Ramsey Dairy Farm. My family not only operated Asheville’s Fun Depot (and now Cascades Mountain Resort), but we also baled and sold hay and raised cows and horses. Although I didn’t enjoy loading trucks with cut grass or mixing powdered milk early in the morning before school, I loved growing up in the country. And the best part of my childhood farm? We had a 2-acre pond loaded with large-mouth bass, bluegill and snapping turtles. I fished on that pond all year, and caught hundreds of fish. Half of the pond was covered with lily pads, and I had a floating frog lure that never came across the water undisturbed. You’ve probably seen these lures before, but if not, the hooks are turned upwards and hidden inside the frog’s rubber
body. By hiding the hooks, the frog lure can be pulled across the top of lily pads or through tall grass without getting caught. Normally, an angler can’t see a fishing lure as it’s pulled through the water, but a frog lure stays visible. After casting it out on the pond, an angler watches the frog skate over the top of the water, and the anticipation builds. After

years of practice, I was able to make it look like the frog jumped from lily pad to lily pad. It’s great bait, and a lot of fun to use. And there’s nothing like watching a large-mouth bass break through a lily pad to consume the floating frog. Occasionally, one of my three sisters would also fish in the pond. One day, my younger sister decided to h ap h a z a rd l y throw a line in the water, and she—not me— caught the big one. It was a monster 6-lb l arge - mout h bass. The largest fish I had ever seen at that point in my life, and the largest to ever come out of our pond. I want you to understand the irony of this situation. My sister did not like swimming in the pond because she was “grossed out” by fish. She didn’t like the thought of touching their slimy bodies, and she didn’t like eating them either. Yet it was my sister that caught the largest large-mouth bass in the pond. How do you think I felt? Excited for her? Proud of her? Nope. I was jealous. Really jealous. And my jealously got in the way of being a good brother. I learned something about myself from sister’s big catch. I learned that I’m not very good at being ex-

cited for other people. I tend to be selfish, and want what’s best for me and not necessarily what’s best for others. As her big brother, I should have been overjoyed that my sister pulled in a monster fish. In reality, however, I let my bad attitude get in the way of being a good big brother. How sad! If you end up in a situation like this—maybe instead of a sister, your friend catches a fish and you look at him or her with frustration instead of excitement, or maybe instead of fishing, you see someone succeed in his or her job or with his or her family—don’t be like me and let someone else’s success get in the way of being a good friend, brother or spouse. Don’t let your pride or selfishness ruin a moment of celebration. Instead, intentionally put a smile on your face—even if you don’t feel like it— and tell your friend, spouse or sister what a great job they did. You may find that after doing this a few times, your heart begins to change. Sometimes that’s how life works: intentionally responding the right way, even when you don’t feel like responding the right way, will end up transforming you into someone who can celebrate another’s success, even when it’s your sister who catches the big one.

but the Saltwater was his go-to reel. It caught my attention because I also own one. It was the first serious saltwater big game reel I purchased, and even has my name engraved on it. I had fished for trout with a Ross Gunnison for some time and
was convinced you could drag it behind your truck all the way to the river, and it would still work perfectly. Plus, Ross Reels had a click that was very distinctive, not your wimpy little whirring noise some reels make when a fish is screaming away from you. No, the Ross Gunnison sounded the way an engineered piece of equipment would sound if it were something you relied on every day at work. The Saltwater has a similar sound and feel to it, and I’m convinced that should we find ourselves in the middle of a nuclear Armageddon, this reel will still function perfectly. It’s interesting how certain sounds, like smells, bring back memories from years ago. My favorite “sound” in all of fly fishing is not that of a screaming reel hooked to a big fish, but the unique sound
of an old Pflueger Medalist reel. It’s a great, solid yet soft, sound that is unmistakable. It is very similar in sound and cadence to another timeless piece of equipment from my past, John Deere’s 2 cylinder Poppin Johnny tractor. If you grew up with this kind of machinery, you’ll know what I mean. They were simple but solid pieces of equipment that you knew would be handed down for generations. I can’t think of anything today that would come close to them. Jimmy Harris is the owner of Unicoi Outfitters Located in Helen, GA.

care if it’s only one trophy all day. Others don’t care what size they are as long as they catch 25 or more. Either way, their head is down all day, intently focused on the fish. One common denominator is, those days go by quickly, like a busy day at work where you look at the clock and realize quitting time has passed. I’ve also guided the person whose first words upon stepping into the boat are “I don’t care about catching fish, I’m just happy to be out here.” Yet they showed up with $2000 worth of fly fishing gear and traveled 600 miles over 24 hours. I once had a guy on the boat that said he went on 4 different trips targeting Per-

mit. Each time he got skunked whether it was due to poor conditions or missed opportunities. When he finally did get his permit, he figured it took him $15,000 and 12 days on the water. He had no regrets and said he enjoyed every minute. So why would someone go to such great lengths to do something the hard way. Is it the process? Fifty years ago, if someone went fishing his intent was primarily to stockpile the freezer. If everyone did that today, we wouldn’t have any fish left in the rivers or oceans. So today, many of us follow catch and release or some sort of regulations that support the conservation of fish species. Still, the majority of people go fishing to catch and harvest fish. Perhaps our culture has changed so much that things like fly fishing and handcrafted furniture are becoming a novelty. There’s an easier and faster way to get it done. So at that point, it becomes about the process and the quality of the experience. Fly fishing is not “all about the

fish”, it’s about the connections, hooking up, the pull, the tension and release. It’s about the connection to the people you meet, the places it takes you, the process you have to go through to get there, and the comfort in knowing the formula for happiness once you do. en is a total state of focus that incorporates a togetherness of body, mind, and an activity. Many of us daydream of the next time we are able to go fly fishing. Our lives are hectic, week-toweek, but an outing to the river can be a blessing to an angler’s soul. Time spent listening to the stream constantly flowing downhill, birds singing their songs, and the rustling of the leaves as the wind swirls around you - These, and many more reasons, keep me going back to the streams and rivers of WNC. A recent trip took me to a small brook trout stream. The hike in was beautiful with blue skies, gentle breezes, fresh rain in our creeks, and warm sun on my face! Once my feet were immersed in the water and rod read for action, I began my day wading for small brook trout. Soon, I was rewarded on a nice drift by a fish rising up and taking

my dry fly! Top water takes are, to me, the quintessential fly fishing moments an angler can experience while fly fishing. I release the fish,
and begin mindful wading through the stream. Cast after cast, pool after pool, I fish my way up the stream losing track of time, and stopping at a majestic hole in the stream!!!
First cast…My fly finds the trees! Second. SNAP!!! Goes my leader. Third. My 11 month old son starts crying at the top of
his lungs!!! At that moment, I realized it was time to stop and make readjustments. I put a new diaper on little man, played in the dirt, ate a
snack, drank water, tied tippet and fly, played with a rhododendron branch, ate more food, loaded everything back up, and began fishing again. Quickly followed by the littlest fisherman falling asleep. I fished up to the creek to the trail and hiked out to the truck. We each find activities that are enjoyable causing us to focus energy into a task. Enjoy the moments where “all the stars align” because we can quickly be distracted. May you experience a moment or two of “Zen” on your next adventure outside!

ith summer on its way, terrestrial season begins to ramp up. One of the largest sources of food during the terrestrial season may be the cicada. These “locusts” as they are commonly referred to are not locusts at all. Locusts are actually a species of grasshoppers. Cicadas in the U.S. are a member of the superfamily Cicadoidea and a species within Cicadidae. The cicada of focus in Western North Carolina this year is a very special one. The year 2017 marks the emergence of the periodic cicada Brood VI. This is a 17-year cicada nymph emergence. This cicada nymph will only emerge once every 17 years. This will happen in great numbers and the theory behind the number of nymphs is called “Predator Satiation”. This term essentially means that predators of the nymphs will become

stuffed in the first day or two and stop feeding on the nymphs. This will allow the nymphs that are left to continue their life cycle and be allowed mate and lay eggs. The emergence of cicadas happens every year but not in the numbers that we should see this year. With this large amount of insect activity, this should be an excellent food source for not only trout, but also bass and pan fish alike. With insects of this size in great numbers, some of the biggest fish in the river should start to let down their guard to feed on this large protein rich source. Anglers may get the opportunity to use large dry flies and heavier tippets, making this a very unique experience. This Cicada pattern is a variation of a popular fly designed by Charlie Card. It is easy to tie, floats like a cork and extremely effective. As always, best wishes and tight lines!

Furled Leaders or Not Furled Leaders?
R
oughly three years ago, I won a furled leader at our local Trout Unlimited chapter meeting, and I wondered what I would do with this. I started asking myself a few questions, such as, “Will this furled leader float?” “Will it spook the wary trout in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park?” “Will it cast decently?” I discovered answers to all of these questions

while fishing the awesome waters of Noland Creek in the GSMNP. I had fished Noland Creek one week prior and used my knotless tapered leader, as most of us do. I had a great day catching many nice rainbows on my number 12 Fore an After patterns. I never thought about using the furled leader and to be honest, I did not know how to use the thing. After a bit of re-
JUNE 2017
search, I decided I was going to use the furled leader all day, no matter what happened. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised, or better yet...I am hooked for life! For starters, the furled leader has no memory, unlike the tapered leaders that I normally use. (No memory means no loops left in the leader.) Trying to stretch out the nylon and/or fluorocarbon leader is quite a chore and really never happens. Secondly, the furled leaders cast like a dream, allowing for delicate presentations of dry flies to wary mountain trout. All of the energy generated in the casting stroke truly makes its way thru the furled leader, allowing for great casts that are effortless. I found myself catching multiple trout out of pools I normally struggle getting a good presentation in, most days. Furled leaders either have a tippet ring or shorb loop. This allows for quick and easy tippet changes. Quicker tippet changes equal more time fishing and less time rigging.
COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM
Furled leaders do cost a bit more in the beginning, but the value over time justifies the cost. You actually end up saving money in the long run. Furled leaders can, and will, last an entire season versus that of the standard nylon or fluorocarbon leader. You will need to apply floatant to the furled leader, but I found mine floated all day with no problems using just one coating. I had considered myself an above average fly fisherman, especially when it comes to catching fish in the Great Smoky Mountains Nation Park. After using the furled leader, not only did I feel more confident than ever, but I also have landed some of the biggest brown trout that I have ever taken on a dry fly in the GSMNP. I challenge you to get out of your comfort zone and try a furled leader. Furled leaders can be custom made or you can pick one up at your local shop. Pick one up and see if it’s for you! Created and maintained by RiverLink and Mountain True, the French Broad River Paddle Trail extends 140 miles from the headwaters in Rosman, North Carolina to Douglas Lake in Tennessee. With the availability of campsites, the entire paddle trail can be completed in 10-13 days. That night, we settled into the tent exhausted and fell asleep to the chatter of a pack of coyotes in the distance. On Day 2, we ate a quick breakfast and got on the water early for our longest day of paddling. It was 15.5 miles to our next campsite. Elevated above a bend in the river, the Riverbend campsite (River Mile 24.3) was in an open field with a 180 degree view looking west towards Pisgah National Forest. We finished another great day
on the French Broad River eating dinner while watching the sun set over the mountains. The shortest paddle day of the trip conveniently occurred after the longest. On Day 3, we were only 5.95 miles from the Little River campsite (River Mile 30.25). Knowing this, we took our time and stopped at the mouth of the Davidson River to wade and look for macroinvertebrates (a.k.a. aquatic bugs) in the cold waters. By Days 4 and 5, we had fully settled into the routine of river life. The last two days were marked by more exciting wildlife sightings, including Great Blue Heron, Otters, and a Beaver. On our last

As the recipient of a fine Christian raising and a desire to be a good example to the young folks that I might influence, these two questions, invariably back me into a moral corner every time. “Where’d you catch it?“ and “What did you use for bait?” For the most part, fishing techniques, general areas [entire lakes or rivers] and proven baits; Those, I’m willing to share with relish as I love to talk about fishing. It’s when someone in the conversation, either by innocence or design, asks one of these questions that I am most tempted to stray from the path of righteousness and lie like a cheap rug. I am comforted by the fact that I am not alone in my struggle to fight the good fight. I know countless fishermen who are bastions of virtue and honest to a fault until they
are confronted with one or both of these infernal queries. I’ve seen many a fine man sweat and squirm and then lie like their life depended on it. Some things are just beyond our ability to control and sadly, after years of struggle and guilt, we become callous and the lies flow as naturally as a mountain creek. This widespread moral struggle has moved me to start a support organization to help encourage and support my fellow anglers. It’s called LAA, [lying anglers anonymous]. I have gone to great extents, in both research and expense, to identify those of us who suffer. This is not an obvious condition to all so I have developed a formula to identify just how deep someone is mired in this unfortunate trap.
• If they suddenly remember something they forgot to do on the boat. 100% • If they won’t look you in the eye and sound unsure. 100% • If the preacher is there with you. 100% • If they swear on their mothers life. 100% • If they say they’ll take you there. 100%
I’m sure by now you’re beginning to realize the gravity of these folks’ predicament. No one sets out to be like this. It’s just an unfortunate aspect of an otherwise wonderful sport, which is why I have decided to kick off the newly formed L.A.A. inaugural meeting % = chance of lying with an introductory years mem • If they look you in the eye and bership for only $999.99. speak with great conviction. 100% Just think of it. You can freely and safely admit all your inconsis-
tencies in a group that understands why you can’t truthfully answer those questions and you just might pick up a few tips on fishing spots not privy to the general public. As a fellow sufferer, I understand your pain and these days, what with the economy and such, I understand if you are reluctant to purchase the L.A.A annual membership. Just to let you know the depth of my concern for those afflicted, you don’t have to join but if you want a clear conscience and would like to finally tell the truth about your fishing spot or special bait, I’m listening! If The Boat Fits…
H
ave you been thinking about buying a boat? Let’s go over a few things to consider so you can make the boat-buying process a more pleasurable experience. Some important questions to ask yourself are: “What do I want a boat for? Will I be using it with my family? Is it mostly for fishing? Skiing? Pleasure?” Now, pontoons are more family oriented with lots of seating and a not-so-bouncy ride. Bass boats are for the more serious anglers: You and one passenger is typically all these “bad boys” can handle. Fish and Skies are more ski with a little bit of “fishability”. Mid-engine ski boats are all about the pulling power for skiers and towables. Aluminum V-hull fishing boats are for what? You got it…Fishing! (See, you are getting better at this now). Deck boats are

basically a planing pontoon. They have all the seating but you will experience a rougher ride. Runabouts provide a good combination for pleasure and skiing. Now, new or used? If you have your heart set on buying a new boat, just pick the type that suits your needs, pick the color and go with it! Used boats, however, are a subject that I could write a whole book about. I have heard people say they want to buy a cheap boat to see if they are really “boating” people. My observation is if you buy a cheap boat and it stays in the shop the whole boating season then guess what? You are not a boating person! Let’s go over the basics of used boats. Always, always, always check the compression on outboards. You usually do not want to

see any cylinder more than 15 lbs different than the other cylinders. Tilt the motor or out-drive up, then shake the motor to see if the transom is weak. You do not want to see any movement in the transom area. Spin the prop shaft to make sure it is not bent and check that the propeller is not out of round. Walk around on the floor to check for any soft spots or rot. Figure out if this boat will provide enough horsepower for what you intend to use it for. Is the steering system adequate? Is all instrumentation accurate and in working order? It’s a bad day when your fuel gauge says its full, and then you run out of gas. Consider the condition of the upholstery, carpet and finish.
COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM
All these can be renewed, but it is a costly affair. You can take the boat to a dealer to have it checked out, if you are really not sure what you are looking for. When you do buy a boat, I recommend getting insurance on the boat. Boat insurance is really in-
expensive for what it covers. Make sure all your safety equipment is up to par. Let’s go boating and enjoy the summer!
Beach Marine Bait Pens
T
eddy Beach grew up racing. Racing and fishing have always been his family’s two passions. “Jim Reider once told me, ‘Hey, kid you’re going to be fine,” Teddy said, remembering a night at the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds in 2005. “Over the course of the race, I heard his voice many times for he was my crew chief and spotter that night. We went on to win the 2005 Hoosier 100. I will remember those words forever.” Teddy’s dad was a drag racer at many different professional lev-
els. Teddy grew up with a fist full of throttle and a loud pedal under his right foot. Brakes were optional. Ted Sr. is Teddy’s hero, best friend and mentor. The elder is a third-generation manufacturer, farmer and entrepreneur. They come from a small village named Donnelsville, Ohio, where Teddy grew up running down the hill from the house directly into their tool and die shop. Mike Zimmer was their engineer at the time, and he would run Teddy out of the drafting room because he got tired of the boy destroying erasers and asking too many questions. The point of all this is to explain that engineering and manufacturing are in the family’s blood. Fishing is a passion, and they have fished all over Florida since Teddy was born. From bottom fishing for grouper and snapper off Fort Myers to sailfish and mahi in the Keys and marlin and tuna over in the Bahamas, if they weren’t racing, they were fishing. Out of the combination of those two passions, Beach Marine Products was founded to provide the market with innovative and professional saltwater fishing products. Beach Marine’s live bait pens are industry changing. With a sloped-bottom design and industry changing false bottom, these bait pens were engineered to reduce stress on baitfish. Heavy duty all 6061 aluminum construction with zinc anode assures a durable and long-lasting product. All hardware is stainless steel and doubled up, so there is no single point of failure. They are powder coated with no sharp edges to hurt or red nose baits. The Beach Blue color gives the pens a unique clean appearance as well as a calming atmosphere to decrease stress on the bait while holding. Large oversize doors allow access for cast nets and large dip nets. Beach Bait Pens come in many different shapes and sizes ranging from a 30Gal round, to a monster 400Gal oval. Beach Bait Pens are tough just like the Anglers who use them everyday. If you fish live bait, there is only one bait pen you should own. That is a Beach Marine Products. FLY FISHING
BE HONEST ABOUT YOUR FLY CASTING ABILITIES
W
hen booking a saltwater fly fishing trip with a guide, a mistake some fly fishers make is overstating their casting abilities. This will most likely lead to frustration for both the angler and guide resulting in a very long day on the water. Here are a couple of tips to make sure this situation is avoided Practice Makes Perfect Yep, the old saying “practice makes perfect” is so true. So, before embarking on a guided fly fishing trip, take the time to practice casting to a comfortable distance. For example, if you’re targeting redfish, make sure you can cast to a target at 40 feet. Most redfish are hooked at a closer range, however, being able to make the longer 40-foot cast will make the shorter casts of 15 to 30 feet seem much easier. Remember, casting is not only about proper timing and technique but also how confident the angler is at making the cast. Set Your Target Range Like archery, fly casting is all about executing a cast to a specific spot at certain distance. The best way to accomplish this is to set up targets in an open space in your backyard or at the park. I find the best targets are small orange soccer cones. These are easily seen, have a small diameter and won’t blow away in the wind. I also prefer the orange cones over the traditional hula hoops because it forces the caster to cast to a smaller target area.

veryone knows summer is a great time to catch trout on a fly. But for those looking to take fly fishing for trout to a whole new level, consider mousing. Mousing refers to fishing for trout with large topwater patterns meant to mimic small rodents. It is a tactic best utilized at night, when nocturnal rodents forage. The basic premise is that large trout have adapted their diet to eat mostly meat, be it smaller fish, rodents, frogs or even small birds. These fish are the top of the food chain in the waters where they reside, and they can be extremely hard to catch. They mostly hunt at night, and use the cover of darkness to stay safe from predators. Fishing at night has its challenges, and it has its rewards.
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 4
10 Feet To 40 Feet Set these cones at the following distances: 10, 20, 30 and 40 feet. I suggest instead of lining up the cones in a straight line, stagger the cones over an area at the appropriate distances. This will force you to make casts in different directions much like you would when encountering gamefish in shallow water. Cast to each target, starting with the cone closest to you and working up to the farthest cone. The key here is to try to only make one false cast before making the final forward cast to the target. By doing this you are forcing yourself to get the cast to the target as quickly as possible without wasting time on multiple false casts. Remember, false casts might look pretty, but they don’t catch fish! Accuracy Once you are comfortable casting to each target, start to work on placing the fly as close to the target as possible. As I mentioned earlier, the small diameter of the soccer cone forces you to cast the fly to a very small target zone similar to a fish’s feeding zone. You want to land the fly within a 2-inch by 2-inch window from the target. Once you are able to hit the target consistently from each distance with one false cast, you’re ready to hit the water. So, when booking a saltwater fly fishing trip with a guide, don’t make the mistake of overestimating your casting abilities. Follow the above steps and you will become a better fly caster, catch more fish and make your guide very happy.

CAMFLYFISHING.COM Here are a few things to keep in mind when mousing. 1. Be quiet. Sometimes it is hard to remember that fish can hear, too. Vibration from even our footsteps can spook these giants. So stealth is the name of the game; walk carefully and quietly and maybe the splash of your fly on the water will be followed by the eruption of water that is an eat from a big nocturnal fish. Keep light to a minimum and use a red/green light so the fish will not be spooked and your eyes will not be shocked by the light. 2. Be aware. When fishing at night, it is critical to know the stream you are fishing. It can be dangerous to be on the banks of a river in the dark, so always move slowly, not only will this help your stealth factor but it will keep you safer. As your senses adjust to the darkness, you can tune in with your surroundings, and you might be amazed at the things you hear and even see with just the light of the moon. 3. Be ready. Big fish eat big food. This applies to fishing streamers during the day or fishing mice in the dark. Have a good selection of large flies that swim on or just below the surface. When mousing, you can also use large subsurface streamers that push a lot of water. Fish can’t see very well in the dark, so they rely on sound and vibration when hunting at night. Large wind-resistant flies are hard to cast when you can see what is going on, much more so when you can’t see your hand in front of your face. Use clear-lensed glasses to protect your eyes. 4. Be calm. It is easy to get excited and pull the fly out of the fish’s mouth when setting the hook, so wait a couple of seconds after you hear the splash. Give the fly a small twitch and wait until you feel the fish, then set the hook and get ready for the night of your life! See more from Charlie Warfield at www.modernflyfisher.com.

FLY OF THE MONTH HIDALGO’S HOOCHIE MOMMA By Carlos Hidalgo I love fishing streamers for trout. This may be leftover from my days fly fishing for peacock bass and saltwater species in Florida. It may also be because casting and stripping is just more fun than high-sticking a nymph. Or maybe it’s because streamers attract the biggest trout. For these reasons, and probably a few others, you should carry a few streamers in your trout boxes, and the Hoochie Momma should definitely be one of them. I think two keys make this fly effective. The oversized head pushes water and emits vibrations that fish sense with their lateral lines, and the UV Krystal Flash presents very interesting visual effects. The Hoochie Momma can be stripped quickly, stripped slowly with occasional dead drifts, like a dying minnow, or even allowed to dead drift. Hook - streamer hook, downturned eye, 4x long, size 12-6 Thread - brown Underbody - lead wire (optional, but recommended in strong currents) Body - tan diamond braid Wing - red squirrel tail topped with a few strands of tan/UV Krystal Flash Head - reddish brown chenille Eyes - gold 3-D molded stick-on eyes, glued with five-minute epoxy Contact Carlos Hidalgo at cah6620@gmail.com if you would like to submit a pattern for consideration in this column. YAMAHA
Rolls Out Exciting Developments For Offshore Anglers
Y
amaha has some exciting new developments in the marketplace this summer that should catch the eye of offshore anglers. The latest version of the venerable F350 outboard now offers five full years of limited warranty protection. Also, Yamaha’s Helm Master Integrated Boat Control System has a new feature that will make large boats powered by big outboards even easier to control. The newest version of Yamaha’s most powerful outboard, the new 5.3-liter F350C now provides five full years of limited warranty coverage, wrapping a refined outboard package with a list of benefits and features that are still unique in the marketplace nine years after the debut of the original F350. “The inclusion of five years of limited warranty coverage with the F350C underscores the reliability of the F350,” said Ben Speciale, president, Yamaha Marine Group. “We are confident that this benefit for our 5.3-liter V8 customers builds in exceptional value for Yamaha’s most powerful outboard on the market.” Yamaha’s F350 redefined offshore power in 2007 and still has little competition in its class. The first F350 offered an outboard capable of the raw thrust necessary for pushing larger and heavier offshore boats. Thousands of F350s later, there is still nothing like it. And for boaters looking to control all that power, the new and improved Helm Master Integrated Boat Control System makes fishing from and docking big boats a breeze. Yamaha Marine Group recently announced a new feature that gives its Helm Master Integrated Boat Control System even greater levels of control. With the Set Point boat positioning function, boaters now have the capability to integrate all boat control systems and then guide them with GPS navigation technology. “The introduction of Helm Master changed the way boaters think about controlling larger outboard-powered boats,” said Speciale. “Helm Master made docking less stressful and fishing on the open water more enjoyable. Set Point takes that functionality and precision to the next level.” Set Point is comprised of a suite of satellite-guided capabilities designed to improve the boater’s ability to fish, maneuver and simply enjoy life on the water. Using a unique dual-antenna GPS to provide Helm Master’s operating system more navigational information, the Set Point function provides even greater and more precise control. Set Point has three primary modes: Stay Point, Fish Point and Drift Point. Each Set Point mode provides a solution to the tricky maneuvering challenges boaters encounter every day. Stay Point keeps the boat positioned near a particular spot; it maintains a selected position and heading. This mode is particularly helpful when a boat must hold a position and heading, for example at a fuel dock or at a bridge opening. In adverse weather or high currents, Helm Master uses higher RPM and greater engine activity to keep the boat as close to the mark as possible, within a 75-foot circle of the set point. Fish Point enhances fishing options; it maintains a selected position, but not a heading, and primarily uses only idle RPM to do so. The Fish Point mode makes use of a captain’s knowledge in heading a boat into the current or wind, bow upstream or downstream, to maintain a heading. Under normal condi-
tions, the Set Point function will use no more than idle RPM to hold the Fish Point position, which means Fish Point operation is less likely to scare the fish. In stronger seas, Fish Point will attempt to keep the boat on the point selected using no more than the requested Fish Point RPM to do so, up to 2,500 RPM. Yamaha’s Shift Dampener System propellers play a role in keeping the boat on point quietly, too. Drift Point allows the boater to drift the boat with the wind or the current; it maintains a selected heading, but not a position. Drift Point mode is particularly useful to maintain a heading when drift fishing or kite fishing. Drift Point allows the boat to drift with the wind or current, but stay pointed in the heading chosen. Each Set Point mode is activated with the touch of a button. The Set Point control buttons are integrated into the new Helm Master joystick and use Yamaha’s new CL7 touch screen display to initially configure the operator’s preferences. Each Set Point mode is user-defined for the needs of individual boaters. Helm Master Set Point hardware includes a dual-antenna GPS and stern-mounted lighting that illuminates any time any mode of the SetPoint system is active. The Yamaha CL7 display has a 7-inch touch panel screen with full multi-function display (MFD) capability and connectivity. The display offers precise engine and boat systems data for up to four outboards on one screen, along with other MFD functions such as maps, fishfinder, and graphing capabilities using its built-in 10 MHz GPS. It is the primary display for Yamaha’s fully integrated Helm Master boat control system, and is the required point of access to configure Set Point. Contact your dealer about the latest version of the Helm Master or for information about a retrofit kit that will bring earlier Helm Master-equipped boats up to date with the new technology. MOTOR REVIEW Suzuki Marine Introduces New Models To Outboard Lines
Suzuki Marine is expanding two of its most popular lines of outboards with new models to fill the needs of boaters and anglers. New SS-Series Models The performance-oriented SS-Series, with its signature matte-black paint job and distinctive graphics, is growing with a new 200hp four stroke and the availability of a 25-inch shaft length on its premier 250 SS V6. “People really like the performance matte black look and have been asking us to expand the line,” said Gus Blakely, vice president of sales for Suzuki Marine. “We’re happy to do that by adding the 200SS and making the 250SS available for more kinds of boats.” The Suzuki 200SS features Suzuki’s 200-horsepower inline 4-cylinder powerhead, with 175.0 cubic inch displacement, dual overhead cams and a 10.2:1 compression ratio for increased power and performance. Engine operations are managed by an onboard Engine Control Module and an array of sensors that control the engine’s multi-point sequential electronic fuel injection system and Lean Burn Control technology. The 200SS will come with conventional mechanical throttle and shift control and will be available in 20-inch and 25-inch shaft models. At just 518 lbs, this 4-cylinder outboard delivers V6 like performance in a more compact, lightweight package.
The availability of a 25-inch shaft model for the popular 250SS has been eagerly awaited. The V6 4-Stroke 250SS, with 4.0 liter displacement and a powerful 2.08:1 gear ratio, has built a solid reputation on the pro-bass circuit. With the addition of a 25-inch shaft length model, this high-powered outboard will find new application on bay boats, walleye boats, even the new breed of performance pontoon boats. New AP Advanced Series Models Suzuki has every right to be proud of the DF150AP and DF175AP, two new models in their toptier AP-Series. In addition to a long list of advanced features, these new 150- and 175-hp inline four cylinder outboards feature Suzuki Precision Control drive-by-wire throttle and shift, as well as Suzuki’s innovative Selective Rotation gear case. These outboards share their engineering DNA with Suzuki’s popular DF200AP 200-horsepower inline-four cylinder outboard. All three engines are built off of the same 175 cubic inch displacement inlinefour cylinder engine block. The new DF150AP and DF175AP boast the largest displacement in their respective horsepower classes. Engine performance is enhanced by a 10.2:1 compression ratio that generates optimal power, contributing to an impressive hole-shot and mid-range acceleration. A newly developed Semi-Direct Air Intake System further boosts power by providing cooler airflow to each cylinder. With the addition of these two models, Suzuki offers a wide range of new generation lightweight, compact, yet powerful inline four cylinder 4-stroke outboards. For more information on Suzuki’s full line of 4-stroke outboard motors, visit www.suzukimarine.com or call 714-996-7040.

FIELD TEST
Sea Eagle FishSUP FS126
Standup paddleboard fishing is trending, so we eagerly tested Sea Eagle’s new inflatable FishSUP FS126. Sea Eagle calls it super stable. We were super impressed. With a length of 12’6” and a width of 40”, it’s a spacious platform that’s tough enough to work hardened shorelines. Heavy duty .90 drop-stitch material covers the top, bottom and sides for superior protection against punctures and a 90” by 18” thick, camouflage EVA pad adds additional buffering while providing a non-slip footbed. An integral 36-inch ruler makes fish measurement a snap. We packed this rig in the trunk, hit the beach, and fully inflated it in less than 10 minutes. Smartly positioned D-rings tightly secured optional accessories including a swivel seat with Scotty rod holders, battery, 34-lb. thrust electric motor and forward mesh storage box with tube-style rod holders. An SUP paddle, kayak paddle, backpack, hand pump and repair kit come with the basic package. Price: $1099. For more information, call Sea Eagle at 800748-8066 M-F, 9-5 EST, or check out their website.

ric Scordo, of Watertown, N.Y., is a trophy catfish hunter. On April 30, he achieved a long-held dream of breaking the New York state record for channel catfish when he boated a massive 35.25-pounder from Lake Ontario’s Chaumont Bay. Caught on live bait using an Okuma reel paired with an Ugly Stick rod and an Addya hook, the beast smashed the existing record by more than 3 pounds. The previous record, which stood since 2002, weighed 32.12 pounds and was caught from Brant Lake, a 1,300acre reservoir in the Hudson River drainage. Scordo is a little bit of a fanatic about catch and release. The philosophy makes sense for someone specializing in large catfish, as it can take these fish decades to grow to state record size. Scordo was determined to release his record fish alive. So after it was weighed on a certified scale at Chaumont Hardware, the fish was taken to Chaumont Bay Marina where assistance was provided in keeping the fish alive and healthy. It was kept in a bait tank for a full day before a state biologist made it out for verification. After the record was verified, Scordo nurtured the fish to recovery and released it back into Chaumont Bay. An impressive gathering of local media were on-hand to video the fish’s release. Check out Chaumont Bay Marina on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/chaumontbaymarina/?rf=120452787968030

Fishmaster Launches Best Catch Contest for Customers Nationwide
F
i s h m a s t e r, creators of the first universal folding T-Top, has launched the Fishmaster Best Catch Contest. This contest offers Fishmaster customers and anglers throughout the U.S the opportunity to win a custom fiberglass reproduction of their award-winning catch crafted by American Fish Taxidermy. Contestants can submit unlimited pictures of their catch for a chance to win monthly prizes and to become eligible to win this grand prize, valued at $500 to $1,000. Entrants are encouraged to submit as many photos of different catches as possible. The contest kicked off Saturday, April 1, 2017 and ends on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017. “We design our products with the ultimate goal of helping our fellow anglers reel in the perfect catch,” said Greg Spivia of Fishmaster. “We want to showcase our loyal customers with the fish they caught in a way they can remember forever, through partnering with the most talented fish taxidermist in the U.S.—American Fish Taxidermy.” Through the contest, Fishmaster is awarding monthly prizes through September. Monthly prizes will be announced via email and Facebook on the first Monday of each month. The Grand Prize Winner will be announced on Oct. 15 via email with public notice on Fishmaster’s Facebook page. Monthly winners are eligible for the Grand Prize; however, our independent team of anglers will review all submissions before naming the big winner. Fishmaster encourages all interested parties to learn more about the Best Catch Contest, official rules, and how to enter at https://fishmaster. com/bestcatch.

If you shallow-water fish and need a flats boat, Mitzi Skiff is the boat for you. All Mitzi Skiff models float very shallow, they pole easily and track straight. With a minimum of horsepower, they are quick and provide a very smooth and dry ride. Mitzi Skiffs offers several models to fit an angler’s needs and budget. Their Mitzi 17 is perfect for the most demanding shallow-water anglers and charter captains. From its ability to get you home comfortably to its ultra-stealthy, no-hull-slap hull, it’s truly an angler’s boat. The 17’s CAD-designed hull has performance unmatched by any other shallow-draft skiff, at any price. It will do 45mph with a 60 hp engine, and it is capable of fishing 3 or 4 people. It offers lots of storage, easy maintenance and is remarkably dry. With a wide bow area and 11-degree deadrise hull, these boats take you to the shallow areas to find the fish and across open water as well. Mitzi Skiffs came from the idea that flats fishing didn’t have to be a rich man’s sport. Mitzi skiff is a boat that all of us can afford. They are lightweight, all composite, shallow water workhorses. There are many options available including center consoles, live wells, built-in tanks, Power Poles and much more. Professional captains guide out of Mitzi Skiffs every day, even days that are less ideal conditions.
