What is a Chanticleer?
The Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina University when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

2009 Coastal Carolina University Women’s Soccer
2009 Outlook
The 2009 version of the Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team is looking to take the final step in winning the Big South Tournament and advancing to the NCAA Championships. The Chanticleers have been so close they can taste it the past two seasons. In 2007, the Chants won the Big South regular-season title and advanced to the championship game of the tournament, but fell to High Point in penalty kicks. Last year, the same scenario unfolded, but Coastal Carolina fell to Radford 2-1 in the title game. This season, the Chanticleers return six starters and 15 letterwinners from last year’s team, hoping the hard work during the spring and summer pays off in an NCAA berth. ” I think that our returning starters have to step up and play well,” fourth-year Coastal Carolina head coach Rohan Naraine said. “There are a few freshmen who we expect to get playing time and step in right away. I think we are going to do well because of the leadership from our captains. That has to be very good. I think the whole team knows each other and are going to get along well. That’s half of it right there. “The most important thing is that they are all in shape. If not, we’ll get them there, but it helps if they are...With our six or seven starters returning and our freshmen group, I think it’s going to be a good group to work with.” The Chanticleers return six starters from last year’s championship game, with most of those playing in the midfield and on defense. The backfield remains intact except for Chelsea Terry, who missed most of the second half of the season with an injury. The defense will be filled with upperclassmen as seniors Maegen Hellberg, Corie Coles and Sarah McPartlan are all projected starters in the back while juniors Amy Haggard and Karen Pavlick both have the experience in goal. Hellberg is a three-year starter in the back for the Chants, starting 62 games in that time span. She is a two-time All-Big South Second Team selection and can play at sweeper for the Chants. Coles will return to the lineup after injuring her ankle last year at East Carolina. Coles started Coastal Carolina’s first seven games before the injury sidelined her until the Big South Tournament. McPartlan could split time at forward and in the back, as she played both positions last season. She had four assists her first season in a Chanticleer uniform in being named to the All-Big South Second Team. Haggard started 17 games last season for the Chanticleers, recording five shutouts and sporting a 1.44 goals-against-average. She is a former Big South All-Freshman Team member who has 14 career shutouts. Pavlick came on in last year’s Big South Tournament, earning shutouts in wins over Gardner-Webb and High Point. Both goalies will have competition from Eastern Kentucky transfer Amanda Carta and freshman Shelby Butz. The backfield might also be the deepest position for the Chanticleers. Colleen Schohl and Kelsey Havell are both heading into their junior seasons for the Chanticleers. The duo have combined to play in 47 games for the Coastal Carolina defense. Sophomore Marissa Terry was a Big South All-Freshman Team selection last season, playing in both the midfield and on defense. Terry had six starts and scored her first career goal against Austin Peay. Sophomore Tori Strengari also can play in the back or the midfield. She made seven starts last season and assisted

Samantha Teijelo, Anna Tupy and Sara Niles all return to the Coastal Carolina midfield this season.
on Terry’s goal. Classmate Julia Baldwin came back from injury to play in eight games for Coastal Carolina. She also made two starts in the backfield. The midfield remains intact for the 2009 season. Naraine and the Chanticleers will have to replace First Team All-Big South honoree Emily McColl in the center midfield, but junior Anna Tupy will look to fill that void. Tupy has been solid in the midfield since she arrived at Coastal Carolina, starting all 43 games in her two-year career. She had one of the great moments of last season, scoring the game-winning goal with 14 seconds left in a 3-2 win over Liberty. Returning to play in the outside midfield are senior Samantha Teijelo and junior Sara Niles. Teijelo played in 20 games last year for the Chants, assisting on four goals to up her career assist total to eight. Niles has been a two-year starter on the outside. She also had four assists last season and now has six career helpers. Maggie Wilding returns for her junior season and can play in the midfield or in the back. The injury bug hit sophomores Jessie Benchley and Sam Schuller last season. Both will be looking to earn playing time in the midfield during preseason camp. Redshirt freshmen Kelsie Dreisbach and Molly Johnson will be playing their first season after redshirting in 2008. Coastal Carolina graduated two of its most prolific goal scorers in school history in Blair Monroe and Ashleigh Gunning along with Heather Haupt, who scored nine goals in her four years in Conway. Senior Dana Gentile will look to fill that scoring void. Gentile scored three goals last season for the Chanticleers and was the nation’s leading scorer in junior college in 2007 at Herkimer Community College. Another solid recruiting class comes in this fall, as 16 new faces will be in camp in August. The Chanticleers open the 2009 schedule Friday, August 28 against Jacksonville in the University of North Florida Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla. Coastal Carolina also will play host North Florida. After a road game at Appalachian State, the Chants will play in the Longwood Tournament, facing host Longwood and Richmond. Coastal Carolina will be at Elon Sept. 9, 1. Radford and then play George Mason and William and Mary in the Fairfield Inn and Suites Marriott Tribe 2. Coastal Carolina Invitaitonal in Williamsburg, Va. 3. Charleston Southern The Chants open home play against The Citadel Tuesday, Sept. 15. Coastal Carolina then 4. High Point faces Conference USA’s East Carolina Friday, Sept. 18 at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field. 5. Liberty Coastal Carolina opens Big South play Oct. 3 at High Point. The home Big South opener is 6. Winthrop Oct. 10 against VMI. Naraine expects the Big South to have parity much like the League did last 7. VMI season. 8. UNC Asheville ” I think the conference will be even closer this year than it was last season,“ Naraine said. 9. Gardner-Webb ”I think number 10 can beat number one on any given day. I think everyone has had a good recruiting class coming in. We’re even closer this year, and it’s going to be one game at a time and on that date. “ Naraine is excited about the possibilities of this year’s team. “We need to score goals like everyone else. We have some players coming back who can do that. I think that we’re going to have a lot of depth, which will help us. With the tough schedule that we have early on, we can get a lot of players in and get everything sorted out when we get to the conference and the tournament. “I thought I saw some good things from some people in the spring that I’m looking to start. We played some good teams and had some good wins. I thought it was a good spring for us, especially for some of our younger players to develop. They know what it takes to get a starting position.“

2009 Coastal Carolina University Women’s Soccer
Big South Conference
Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South
competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years. Kallander has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf and had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection.

The League also had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.
GEORGE F. “BUDDY” SASSER CUP Coastal Carolina University won the prestigious George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup for a record-setting ninth time in 2006-07. The Sasser Cup, named for the former Coastal Carolina Athletic Director and Big South Commissioner, honors the top overall athletic department in the Big South Conference. The award is based on a point system, with points being awarded based upon each school’s finish in each of the 18 league-sponsored sports. T h e C h a n t i c l e e r s’ n i n e Sasser Cup awards are the most earned by one school in Big South history. Coastal won the 2006-07 award by capturing Big South titles in football, women’s indoor track, men’s golf, women’s tennis (tournament) and baseball (regular-season and tournament). In addition to the Big South honors, Coastal Carolina was represented in six different NCAA Championships.

Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The City of Myrtle Beach is in the center of the Grand Strand, a 60-mile crescent of beach on the South Carolina coast. In the last 25 years, Myrtle Beach has developed into the premier resort destination on the East Coast. Our 25,000 permanent residents welcome millions of visitors each year to this full-service resort community. Guests come to enjoy the wide beaches, the Atlantic Ocean, and an incredible range of activities and entertainment. Myrtle Beach was incorporated as a town in 1938 and became a city in 1957. Its name comes from the wax myrtle, a shrub that grows abundantly in the area. History records that a party of Spaniards from Hispaniola landed about 50 miles north of present-day Myrtle Beach in 1526 and eventually established the first European settlement in the U.S. about 30 miles to the south. The settlement, San Miguel de Cauldape, was abandoned

the following year, though, and the group returned to Hispaniola. In the next three centuries, the region’s population slowly grew. Landowners gradually developed large plantations in the area, with rice as the principal crop. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, people began to “vacation” here, although it was quite rustic. Houses and camps were sparse, and there were few permanent residents at the turn of the century. But, drawn by the ocean, sand and trees, people began to call Myrtle Beach “home” as the 1900s progressed. Today, Myrtle Beach is a well known destination for vacationers from around the country, Canada and abroad. According to the 2000 Census, the city is at the center of the 13th fastest growing metropolitan area in the U.S. It is also one of the golf capitals of the world, boasting over 100 golf courses within a 40-mile radius.

Coastal Carolina University is a public comprehensive liberal arts institution that seeks to develop students who are both knowledgeable in their chosen fields and prepared to be productive, responsible, healthy citizens with a global perspective. To deliver on this commitment, Coastal Carolina recruits highly qualified and motivated students, faculty, and staff from the region, state, nation, and world to create a diverse and dynamic student-centered learning environment. Because Coastal Carolina embraces the teacher-scholar model, it places primary emphasis on high quality teaching and engaged learning, and it supports faculty research, creative activities, and expert collaboration in the community, state, nation, and world. This focus enables faculty and staff to mentor students in collaborative research, creative opportunities, and internships. To nurture this active learning community, Coastal Carolina maintains a broad range of contemporary technologies, programming, support services, and innovative course offerings and delivery methods. The result is alumni who are well prepared for professional careers or graduate programs in their chosen fields and who continue to be connected to Coastal Carolina. Inspired by its founding in 1954 to serve the educational needs of the immediate area, Coastal Carolina has grown with the region to become a mid-sized regional comprehensive university with a tradition of a strong liberal arts core. As such, Coastal Carolina commits its resources to maintaining a population of 8,000 – 12,000 students by building baccalaureate and selective master’s programs of national and/or regional significance in the arts and sciences, business, humanities, education, and health and human services. Coastal Carolina fully embraces its leadership role as a regional center of economic and intellectual resources, lifelong learning, cultural and recreational opportunities, and athletic programs. As Coastal Carolina executes this mission, it recognizes its responsibility to be a role model to the community and to the professions by assuring fair and honest treatment of people with whom it interacts and sustainable stewardship of resources entrusted to it, adopting the highest standards of integrity and accountability, and committing itself to excellence through continuous self-improvement.

Athletic Department
Warren D. “Moose” Koegel is completing his ninth year as the Director of Athletics at Coastal Carolina University. Koegel, the Chanticleers’ fifth Athletic Director since 1986, was appointed on October 6, 2000. In Koegel’s years at the helm of the Coastal Carolina Athletic Department, the Chanticleers have flourished both on and off the fields of play. In his tenure to date, Coastal Carolina has been represented in NCAA Championships in men’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s tennis, men’s golf, women’s golf, softball, baseball, women’s indoor track and field, and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. The Chanticleers also have won the prestigious George F. “Buddy”Sasser Cup five times, including their fourth consecutive award in 2006-07, awarded annually to the top athletic department in the Big South Conference. In addition to the work in their sport, Coastal Carolina’s almost 400 student-athletes combined for almost a 3.0 grade point average during the 2007-08 academic year. For his efforts, Koegel was named the 2008 NACDA Southeast Region Division I FCS Athletic Director of the Year. Coastal Carolina’s 17 current NCAA Division I sports continue to flourish, including the most recent addition to the Chanticleers’ athletic department — football. Football, which kicked off with the 2003 season and won its first Big South championship in 2004 in just its second year of play, competes at the NCAA Division I-Football Championship Subdivision level. Coastal Carolina completed construction on a 6,408-seat state-of-the-art stadium in 2003, which expanded by almost 1,000 seats for the 2006 season. A new athletic facility which will house the football program, as well as other parts of the department, is also slated for the near future. The new athletic facility will include an expanded weight room, training room, team meeting rooms, locker rooms for football, offices for all football coaches and staff, and several conference rooms. The facility will also become the new home for the Coastal Carolina University Buddy Sasser Athletic Hall of Fame. Koegel came to Coastal Carolina from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he had served as an associate athletic director from 1998-2000. At Chattanooga, Koegel helped manage a $5.2 million budget for 16 NCAA Division I sports. His other administrative responsibilities included business operations, athletic scholarships, marketing and serving as the liaison to the coaching staff. He also served on the steering committee for the NCAA I-AA National Championship Football Game. Prior to his stint at Chattanooga, he had served on the football coaching staffs at the University of Connecticut, Rutgers University and the University of Wyoming. During his tenure on the football coaching staff at the University of Connecticut from 1992 to 1997, he was recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach as well as interim head coach in 1993. Koegel was an assistant football coach at Rutgers University from 1984 to 1990 and Wyoming University from 1977 to 1983. Koegel played in the National Football League from 1971 to 1976, spending time with the Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Cardinals and New York Jets. He starred at Penn State University under legendary football coach Joe Paterno. He was co-captain of the Nittany Lions his senior season and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1971. During his college career, he was a Third Team All-American as a senior and played on two Orange Bowl champion teams. He also played in the Hula Bowl, East-West Shrine Game and the College All-State Game. Koegel received Penn State’s Dedicated Player and Outstanding Senior Awards. Koegel and his wife Elaine have one daughter, Kathryn.
