Top Ten Ways to Maximize Your Job Be reliable, set goals, communicate, be a team player – all of these tips are essential for getting the most out of your part-time job. Being more than just a “warm body” will help you make a difference in your job, as well as get you the recommendation you’ll need later for future jobs. Below are some of the most important things to remember when it comes to maximizing your parttime job. 10. Be Reliable Come to work on time; even be there a little early! Only miss work for emergencies or if you’ve cleared it with your employers ahead of time. Call in early and let them know if you do need to miss a day. 9. Figure out what kind of changes/ improvements you can make in the company and take action Show your dedication to the company by working hard to improve it. Show your initiative and your employers will definitely notice! 8. Show how you are different from the other employees Go beyond the call of duty whenever you can to show your employers that you are different from all the rest. Offer to stay later than you’re scheduled. Ask to work on special projects other than your typical, everyday duties. If you are a standout, there might be more possibilities for advancement in the company!

7. Help out new employees Show new employees the ropes and be a positive role model for them. Remember what it was like to be in their shoes and help them out in whatever way you can. This in itself puts you in a leadership role and makes you an important part of the team. 6. Set goals for yourself and work toward them No matter what kind of job you have, setting goals for yourself can help you to achieve great things in any company. If you always have some bigger goal in mind, you are more likely to stay on your toes and work toward the improvement of the company and gain more experiences for yourself. 5. Communicate with your supervisors and co-workers The key to a comfortable work environment is communication. Do your best to communicate often with your supervisors and co-workers about what’s going on in the workplace. Many times, effective communication can prevent misunderstandings and makes working with each other a lot easier! 4. Do your job to the best of your ability No matter what type of job you have, put your best effort into it. Do the best possible job you can, and your efforts will undoubtedly pay off in the future. 3. Develop your people skills There is nothing more valuable in the job market than good people skills. Use

your part-time job as a place to develop those skills. Learn how to talk to people, organize them, lead them and inspire them to dig into a project. These skills will make you a valuable asset to any company. 2. Be a team player Think of yourself and your co-workers as a team, and be the kind of player that does what is best for the team as a whole. Show your employers and your co-workers how well you understand that working together as a team is one of the best ways to be successful. 1. Make it so that when you leave the company, you leave it knowing that you made an impact Ultimately, when you walk out the door from your part-time job for the last time, you want to leave a legacy. Leave knowing that the company is better off for you having been there, and also knowing that you learned valuable lessons and skills that will help you down the road. Join us for Love a Club Day

Coastal Bend College sponsors a variety of clubs, organizations and honorary societies on campus. Each is geared toward enhancing the college experience. Love a Club Day is an opportunity to meet club members and to find a club that fits your needs.

Feb. 10, Alice Campus Activity Area, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Feb. 10, Beeville Campus SUB, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Feb. 11, Kingsville Campus Multi-Purpose Room, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Feb. 11, Pleasanton Campus Lobby Area, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

CBC-sponsored clubs are primarily student run with a staff or faculty advisor. They meet on a regular basis and have club officers.

Last year, one club raised funds to send members to a national convention. A different club hosted a community event. Another donated toys and clothing to needy children. Club membership looks great on a resume.

Clubs offer great opportunities to get to know people who share your interests or your profession. In addition to fellowship, groups get together to perform community outreach activities.

Love a Club Day will be held on Feb. 10 in Alice and Feb. 11 in Beeville, Kingsville and Pleasanton. Stop by for information about what each organization has to offer or contact Roxanne Aguirre at raguirre@coastalbend.edu.

Coastal Bend College Cultural and Educational Programs Committee hosts a free performance of The Gimbles, three generations of musicians, on Friday, Feb. 5, 7:30 p.m. in the Gertrude R. Jones Fine Arts Auditorium in Beeville. The Gimbles play a Texasstyle symphony of swing and country music. Emily, Dick and Johnny Gimble, with David Levin, are each powerhouse musicians in their own right but together they resonate the very roots of Western swing. The Gimbles’ program is a mix of Texas (western) swing, their versions of standards from the 1930s and 1940s, a little bit of Texas country, and a healthy dose of humor. Emily Gimble, born into two generations of swinging musicians, came out swinging. She has progressed from her first fiddle and guitar to vocals and piano. Growing up surrounded by professional musicians like Ray Benson & Asleep at the Wheel, Randy Elmore’s Swing Showcase and her grandfather, Johnny Gimble, it is

no surprise that Emily pursued a musical career. She earned an Associate’s Degree in Commercial Music – Vocal Performance from McLennan Community College in Waco. She completed work on her first CD – “A Case of The Gimbles” in 2005, featuring all three generations of Gimble musicians and an allstar cast of Austin’s finest musicians. She is currently performing with The Marshall For Swing Band and Warren Hood and the Hoodlums.

Page 18

Emily’s dad, Dick, grew up with the swing beat and the sweet sound of fiddle in his blood. He was born while his dad, Johnny, was on the road with Bob Wills. Johnny began teaching Dick to play bass and guitar in junior high and later hired him into the band. They have played a thousand gigs since then. Dick studied jazz at the University of Texas and did a stint as a session man in Nashville. His performing and recording career has included work with such musical luminaries as Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Floyd Tillman and Walt Wilkins. He has performed on Austin City Li m it s, backing Tom T. Hall, Merle Travis, Charlie Pride, Chet Atkins and Garrison Keillor, and performed with Carrie Underwood during the Grammy Awards. Dick is a 25-year faculty member in the Commercial Music Program at McLennan Communit y Col lege in Waco. He and Marilynn, his wife of 40 years, have three children: Jon Richard, Jeni Re’ and Emily Ann Gimble. Johnny Gimble, National Heritage Awardee and 2005 Texas State Musician, grew up in rural East Texas. He and his four musical brothers performed on the radio in the 1930s. He is perhaps best known for his successful stint with “Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys.” A big part of the Johnny’s legend

Page 19

grows from the fact that he is consummate sideman, session artist and band leader. The Grammy awardwinning artist was named “Instrumentalist of the Year” four times by the Country Music Association and threetime “Fiddler of the Year” by The Academy of Country Music eight times. Fiddler Danny Levin is also a Grammy awardwinning artist. He got his start as a classical cellist but when he heard Texas swing and recorded with Johnny Gimble, he put the cello away. Danny was Asleep at the Wheel’s first fiddler, toured and recorded with the “Wheel” for most of the 1970s and earned two Grammys with the band. Danny is an accomplished jazz guy now. He released a CD of standards and originals called Nutbars in 2008. He recently returned to the cello for some new music bands in Austin. His day job is running an ad music studio in Austin called Tequila Mockingbird. The G i mble s’ performance is free and open to the public. It is one of the many concerts offered at no cost to the community throughout the year by the college.
