CBC students take on Mars during field trip to NASA Every year NASA extends an invitation to south Texas community college students to participate in an on-site work-session. The trip field trip includes guest speakers and tours of NASA Space Center in Houston. This year, Kyria Dismuth and Gabriella Gonzales from CBC Kingsville and Preston Olliphint from CBC Alice participated.

Everyone was assigned to a team with the objective to build rover-type robots in competition with other teams. In the process of developing a working robot; analyzing the costs while staying within a budget; actually demonstrating the robot’s capabilities; and selling the finished product to a group of NASA executives, students developed skills in leadership, cooperation and team spirit.

Gabriella Gonzales was assigned to the White Team with NASA Texas Aerospace Scholars adviser Ansley Collins.

Teams were tasked to build a working robot like this one and demonstrate its capabilities.

Kyria Dismuth and red team members from colleges around the state prepare to build a mobile robot using equipment provided by NASA.
