Basketball season started Nov. 2 with a 7 p.m. home game against Universal City AllStars. This is the first regular season game for new coach Larry Mendez. Coach Mendez is a native of Smyer, Texas, just west of Lubbock. He attended Angelo State University in San Angelo, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business with a minor in kinesiology in 2001. He went on to earn a master’s degree in kinesiology from Texas A&M University – Kingsville in 2003. He played basketball at ASU during the time that Lone Star Conference Hall of Fame Coach Ed Messbarger led the Rams to two of their three conference titles. Mendez was a point guard. “I knew that when I was at Angelo State I was playing with athletes better than I was,” Mendez explained. “I gave it a shot. I played point guard. But I realized that they were better players, so I decided to student coach instead.” Mendez started his coaching career

in college where he was as an ASU student coach. After graduation, he went to TAMUK and became graduate assistant coach for the Javelinas basketball team. He coached in Missouri for Lincoln University for three years; Moberley Area Community College for two years and at Howard College in Big Spring for a year. Moberley was in the top ten nationwide for defensive scoring. He was assistant basketball coach at South Plains for a year before launching his first season at Coastal Bend College. “A team changes every year and it’s fun to watch the players grow up,” Mendez said. He is still in regular contact with past players and their families. Mendez takes over Coastal Bend College’s basketball program started by Bucky Hartman. His plan for the new season is to take over where Hartman left off and show people that CBC has a legitimate program. “These athletes aren’t just showing up to play. We have talented players who are looking

ahead to Division I school basketball. If they’re not focused on that, we don’t want them,” he said. About 90 percent of the team are recent high school graduates. This creates a challenge for players who are in for a longer season with more speed, physicality and mental toughness. Basketball practice started months ago. Another challenge for CBC athletes is that they don’t get to play together and build a strong team over a four-year period. Community college athletes are only together for two years. The emphasis, as a result, has to be on bringing together the best players and getting them to work together to win games, according to Mendez. “This is a defense-oriented team and a pro-style offense. The guys play with a lot of freedom. That makes them tougher,” Mendez explained. Players to watch this season are: Charles Mells, Ashton Brown Julian Stallworth and DaJon King. Mells, a Miami native, is a 6’11” center. He was named Offensive Player of the Year in High School and coaches youth basketball. Brown, of North Bergen, N.J., was named to All-American, All-Western New York and All-Region teams during his high school career. He was also named second in the nation in scoring. Stallworth, a Stevens High School graduate from San Antonio, was named to the Second Team, All-District in 2009. “Basketball is my life,” King said. “I approach it like it’s my life.” King, from Houma, La., has multiple county and district awards in basketball and football. The Brazosport High School graduate is a guard for the Cougars. Coastal Bend College assistant basketball coaches are Tony Martinez and Chad Kline. Prior to CBC, Kline was the head basketball coach at Frank Phillips College

for five seasons. During his time at FPC, Kline compiled an 8961 record, won a Western Junior College Athletic Conference title and was Co-Coach of the year in the 2007 season. He produced 11 All-Conference performers, four All-Region performers and one AllAmerican.

Chad Kline, Asst. Coach

Before becoming FPC head coach, Kline was an assistant at Frank Phillips College for two seasons. Assisting then Tony Martinez, Asst. Coach head coach Lou Gudino, Kline helped the Plainsmen rack up a two-year record of 42-19, consisting of two Region V tournament appearances and a conference championship. Kline’s playing days consisted of a two-year stint at Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kansas. He also played at Emporia State University and McPherson College, both in Kansas. At Barton, Kline was a part of a team that compiled a two year record of 67-5, won two conference championships, and finished runner up in the National Tournament. Kline is a native of McPherson and holds a bachelors degree from Fort Hays State University, located in Hays, Kansas.

A group of students, led by UTSA faculty, built several clean water systems in Peruvian villages to replace water wells. “People would get sick from the water when the region flooded,” Alvarado explained. Groups of engineering students have returned to the region every year. Other projects range in size and include textbooks, art, women’s issues and health issues. San Antonio area nursing students and faculty travel every year to South American villages that are low on federal, state and local funding for health care. The trip not only allows students to practice providing services and taking patient histories, it also give them opportunities to gain hands-on experience in a unique setting. “This is something that students at Coastal Bend College can do. Preparing for college level test-taking by Alex Smith Sinclair College For most first-year college students, test-taking is a huge catalyst for stress. Not only is test-taking in college a different kind of beast from that in high school, it also accounts for a much larger portion of a final grade, and in many cases makes the entire class grade. By taking necessary precautions and learning to properly identify important information; testtaking in college can be tamed. How are tests different from in high school? What would make someone need to prepare differently than in high school? One of the most important aspects of reviewing course material is taking effective notes. According to Edgar Dale’s “Cone of Learning, we can only retain 20 percent of what we have heard accurately, so it is important that the information

all the concepts of your main idea. In college, the content covered is much more specific and the information is not as general as high school, so the number of sub points can make or break you. Of course the real challenge is being able to distinguish between what is important information and what is irrelevant, something that is completely dependent on your critical learning skills. Note-taking will not singlehandedly make up your testtaking prowess. Studying is an extremely important tool in the learning process. In college, tests are typically more comprehensive than high school, and the content covered on exams will cover multiple chapters. The question may not be to study or not, but when?

Justin, a graduate of Goliad High School, is a criminal justice major. His career goal is to become a U.S. Marshal. He is also interested in cooking, drawing and photography.

Visiting a school where you may spend the next two years of your life can be extremely overwhelming. There is so much to think about: residence halls, food and buildings where your classes will be held. You probably feel like there are so many questions to ask and so many different pieces of information to remember. Hopefully, this article will give you some tips and guidelines to help make your college visits a little easier and less stressful. For starters, Coastal Bend College lets you choose a date for your campus tour that is most convenient for you. A college official will assign a college representative or ambassador to your tour, to give you a personalized look at the college. CBC also has open houses where you can not only get a group tour, but also meet some of the faculty and learn more about the majors and programs Robby, a Skidmore-Tynan offered. High School graduate, chose Coastal Bend College to be closer to home. He is an education major and plans to transfer to a university to pursue a degree in elementary education.

Students that are members of the Presidential Ambassadors give tours on the main campus in Beeville. Tour guides may be freshman or

sophomores. Each has committed to serving the college as a tour guide, representative and volunteer at the college. They are a diverse group from many areas of Texas, different majors and a variety of interests and goals. After you have made an appointment for a tour, the rest is up to the school. All you need to do is show up! When you arrive, you will be given a packet containing certain information, such as an application, catalog and brochures about programs and services. Your tour guide will meet you at the beginning of the tour. He or she will explain to you the admissions process and answer any questions that you may have. You will be given a tour of various buildings or departments on campus such as the library, the testing center, student labs and the common areas and explain what happens in each one. If your tour is in Beeville, you will get to see a dorm room so that you know what living conditions will be like, should you choose to be a resident. Do a little research on Coastal Bend College before you visit and perhaps even bring a prepared list of questions. Don’t be afraid to ask your tour guide for information about specific programs. Your campus tour is all about you.

On Nov. 6 and 7, Texas A&M University -- Corpus Christi Fine Arts Professor Greg Reuter, with the assistance of sculptor Bill Rany and TAMUK art students, brought alumninum casting to the Beeville Campus. CBC art students were given squares to customize. Each mold was filled with molten aluminum. The end result, to be completed later, will be a large scale sculpture with the CBC Cougar made out of tiles that represent each student who took part in the workshop. The workshop, the second for Coastal Bend College, gave students the opportunity to explore other mediums of art. TAMUK students learned how to safely execute advanced casting techniques.
