Math rules Kingsville elementary students build math skills with Measure Mania

Measurement Mania is done in partnership with Kingsville Chamber of Commerce, Coastal Bend College and Texas A&M University -- Kingsville Special Programs, and four elementary schools: N.M. Harrel Elementary School, A.D. Harvey Elementary School, Alice G.K. Kleberg Elementary School and Jesus R. Perez Elementary School. The Chamber Education Committee, having identified math as a major concern of the region’s

public school districts, set about finding a way to make a difference. The chamber goal is to augment the work of school teachers with an event that presents TAKS math principles and applies them in a planned, but informal, setting that puts fun into math. Student participants are fifthgraders who are near to, but not quite passing TAKS. “The intent is not to re-teach math, but to provide an experience that gives students a different perspective that can possibly have a positive effect during the upcoming test, said Ann Harrell who chairs the committee. Harrell is a board member of the Kingsville Chamber of Commerce and Director of CBC Kingsville Campus. This is her third year coordinating this event. “Both the participating students and their school representatives express tremendous support for the program. I literally have never seen kids having so much fun with math.” The curriculum was developed

Page 22

by a math consultant from the Kingsville Independent School District who works with the local chamber to provide activities and materials, and facilitates the event. Kleberg First National Bank donates funds for curriculum and materials each year. The location is provided by TAMUK Student Affairs; volunteer table leaders are TAMUK special programs students who are trained by a math consultant; and the food is paid for by TAMUK Special Programs. “Anecdotal reports and evaluations have so far been very good,” Harrell explained. There are two evaluations that help to measure the program’s impact. One is student-oriented and done at the end of the event before students board their buses to return to school. The other is done around the time that TAKS results come in, and is designed to give numerical data how the event impacted student success on math TAKS.
