It sounds boring, but it’s critical to making the most of your college experience. Hopefully, you’ll set some aggressive goals for yourself; time management will help you achieve them. Here are some thoughts on how to manage your time: 1. Schedule early classes Eight o’clock classes are great if you can get up easily; nine o’clock if you can’t. They will force you to get out of bed at a reasonable time, not unlike you did in high school and what your future employer will expect from you. 2. Study between classes Often you’ll have one or two hours to kill. Go to the library and put those hours to work for you. It’s amazing the number of ways people waste time between classes. Get into the routine of making valuable use of these time slots. It’s not that tough. 3. Study after class before dinner This seems rather obvious, but you’d be blown away at how many college students watch soap operas, cartoons or spend hours online in the afternoon. It’s incredible. Why not put this time to better use and save your free time for fun in the evening or on the weekend? 4. When you study, focus on it Make it quality study time, not social time. Do it in a quiet environment and at a high level of intensity. If you maximize the quality of your effort, you’ll minimize the amount of time you need to give it.

Coastal Bend College students plan to travel to Salamanca, Spain this summer for intensive study in architecture or sociology from June 22 to July 5. Jack Young, Coastal Bend College Drafting and Design Instructor, will lead the group on an exploration of historical and contemporary Spanish architecture in public and private spaces. Kelly Rea will teach Essentials of Sociology with a special emphasis on Spanish culture to an accompanying group of students. Young, a member of American Institute of Building Design and the Texas Institute of Building Design, will accompany local guides in introducing Spanish culture through excursions to Madrid, Toledo, Segovia, Avila and Granada. The academic emphasis will be on the relationship, culture, geography, climate, natural resources and materials that complement design methods of construction. All students will participate in these excursions. “Studying architecture in Spain will be a valued learning experience in which students will be able to examine European design features,” Young explained. “Touring throughout Spain will provide students an indepth appreciation of the diversity of architectural design within different regions and demonstrate how historical designs can influence modern design.” All students will live with host families; the homes are located throughout Salamanca. Most of the host families are made up of individuals who do not speak English. In addition to having an opportunity to be immersed in

the language, students will view aspects of the Spanish lifestyle that are inaccessible to most visitors. Sociology students will observe and analyze the social institutions of family, education, population, class, environment, religion and industrialization in Spain. The course will encompass classroom instruction supplemented with an online component and a residential living experience. “Studying sociology and Spanish culture abroad will be tremendous for students. Living with host families will allow students a firsthand look at Spanish culture including familial life, customs and traditions, language, dietary habits, religious practices, arts and entertainment,” Rea said. The two-week trip is open to college and high school students, teachers seeking professional development and travelers. Students in the Special Topics in Architecture course can opt for four credit hours or 6.4 continuing education units. Students in the Sociology course can earn three semester credit hours upon completion of the class. The cost is $2,975 plus tuition and fees, and airfare. A deposit of $1,000 is required by March 6 to reserve a spot. Travel and accommodations in Spain are included in the price, including hotel stays, ground travel, international health insurance and tours. A valid passport is required for this trip. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Kirkpatrick joins college in providing instruction to oil and gas industry Terry Kirkpatrick joins Coastal Bend College in providing instruction to oil and gas industry Coastal Bend College adds oil and gas industry basic orientation to its list of continuing education and professional development courses. Terry Kirkpatrick, a safety trainer and consultant, joins the college bringing over 23 years of experience in the industry with him. Kirkpatrick is a retired Conoco employee. He worked as a pipe operator, inspector, facility manager and safety manager. He has 12 years of experience transporting hazardous liquids; 13 years of experience in pipe lines operations and safety; and five years of facility management experience. He is certified for SafeLand, OSHA 10/30, First Aid CPR/AED, H2S Beyond Awareness and customized training. He is an independent instructor certified by PEC Premier to teach basic orientation safety awareness courses, including lock-out, confined space, respiratory protection, terrorism response awareness, emergency response and Hazwoper. “Oil and gas companies want to know that people have a generic and broad spectrum of knowledge when they come in for employment in the industry. New employees should be introduced to the hazards of the job and, at least, be able to minimally recognize hazards,” Kirkpatrick said.

The orientation that he provides is accepted by several large firms as their basic orientation package. “A lot of times, you’ll have a mix of people new to the oil industry and seasoned veterans,” he explained.

at all times. Some can not afford to shut down operations to train the entire workforce. The flexibility that we are now able to offer addresses the needs of the industry as they were presented to us.” Mobile

Glynis Holm Strause, left, of Coastal Bend College welcomes safety trainer Terry Kirkpatrick. The partnership will increase training opportunities in the Eagle Ford Shale. Kirkpatrick works with oil and gas companies to ensure that the types of training address the needs of particular groups. Training is held at the college or in an on-site mobile unit. Glynis Holm Strause, CBC Dean of Institutional Advancement said, “Some small companies can’t afford to hire contractors to come and train employees or have trainers on site

trailers used as site classrooms were purchased by the college last year with a charitable donation from Pioneer Natural Resources USA, Inc. The $25,000 award helped to outfit the rolling classrooms and furnish an on-site classroom used for professional development. “We’ve spent six months looking for someone with his credentials,” Strause said. “Kirkpatrick is very

Page 17

knowledgeable in his field and we are happy to be able to partner with him to serve the industry.” Kirkpatrick as a safety trainer increases the availability of training and also makes it possible to do on-site training throughout the Eagle Ford Shale region. He is a qualified OSHA compliance inspector and works with oil and gas companies on managing employee training. His instruction is primarily awareness training, however in-depth and customized training is also available through the college’s continuing education program. One of Kirkpatrick’s pet peeves is ambiguity. He works with companies to make sure that the training matches the job. “Not all people need all training,” he explained. “We’ve had problems in the industry where because of ambiguity, people have had to be retrained because they got the wrong training in the first place. That costs money and the training has to be redone.” Those who receive training through Coastal Bend College will have access to transcripts that document their professional development and certifications. In addition to earning a credential card that states that they have been trained in “SafeLand Basic Orentation,” participants will have a permanent record at the college. Coastal Bend College is a comprehensive, public community college serving a diverse South Texas area. It is a student-centered institution committed to the highest integrity and to the development of an educational culture that supports creativity, encourages professional development, and promotes excellence in all areas. and ones like it, are just plain inaccurate. In fact, anthropologists have established that there are more differences within groups than between them. For those of us who like life and relationships to be simple, this is bad news and might make us a bit uncomfortable, but the brutal reality is that inflexible stereotypes will always be wrong. Given that stereotypes are so wrong, it is odd how quickly we

Page 18

is that we want so much to keep from repeating them. A child touches a hot stove and feels pain. From that experience, he generalizes all hot stoves will cause pain. This learning mechanism works great with hot stoves but is less effective with people and human behavior. Just because one man is sexist does not mean all are. Just because one white person is racist does not mean all are.

Perceiving individuals accurately is an important skill for anyone to have. And while most people strive to understand those who are different, the tendency to stereotype can skew perceptions. Still, it’s important to comprehend the difference between a stereotype and a reasonable generality about a group of people. The thing that distinguishes a stereotype from other types of generalities is that stereotypes are inflexible. When we generalize, for example, that all men may like sports or that women tend to be nurturing, we are making working generalities. These are flexible, and we clearly recognize they do not apply to all men or all women. Stereotypes are different from working generalities in that they are applied inflexibly to all members of a group. It is one thing to say, “Some gay men are artistic,” and another to declare with certainty that, “All gay men are artistic.” The latter statement,

learn them. Our family, friends, classmates, coworkers, and the media all easily implant these inflexible categories on our impressionable minds and hearts. The most powerful source of stereotypes, however, is our own negative experiences. The reason negative experiences are more apt to create stereotypes

Even the most enlightened among us resist giving up the stereotypes that make us feel more secure and in control. Here’s how to let go: ◊ Identify Stereotypes: One challenge to ridding ourselves of stereotypes is the fact that we are unaware of what they are. Identifying your stereotypes is easier than you think. It is a

CDL training offered at Coastal Bend College matter of monitoring your thoughts when you hear an ethnic last name, see a skin color, hear an accent, see a disability, learn that a person is gay, etc. ◊ Look for Consistency: Do you have the same reaction to members of a given group each time you encounter them? Ask yourself: “Do I have these reactions before or after I have a chance to know the individual?” If the answer is before, these are your stereotypes. Practice labeling these automatic responses as stereotypes and reminding yourself that they have little validity as accurate indicators of an individual’s character, skills or personality. ◊ Push Stereotypes Aside: After you have identified your stereotypes, learn to shove them aside long enough to see individuals for who they are. Stereotyping is a habit. Just as it is learned through repetition, it can be unlearned through practice. Each time a thought you have identified as a stereotype appears, push it aside. Do not judge yourself harshly; after all, it is just a thought and not an action. Without stereotypes blocking your view, you will be able to see individuals accurately, not as mere reflections of your preconception. The more you do this, the more experiences you will have with individuals who do not conform to your stereotypes and, in turn, the less credibility those stereotypes will have.
