Guadalupe Encinia named TRiO SSS Achiever Coastal Bend College TRiO Student Support Services named CBC graduate Guadalupe Encinia of Mathis, TRiO SSS Achiever. Encinia talked about his experiences with CBC students during a reception held to celebrate TRiO Day. Encinia, who recently completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, told a group of CBC students that his involvement with TRiO opened doors for him. “No one in my family went to any kind of college or training school,” he said. His three years in TRiO SSS while at CBC was a great help to his academic career. “As a first generation college student,” he said. “I didn’t know what to do.” His involvement with TRiO SSS gave him information about financial aid, universities and admissions requirements. He completed his degree at CBC and transferred to TTU with the confidence that he was ready to tackle challenges. He said his first year was tough – emotionally and financially. This was about the time that he lost his father, the late Guadalupe Encinia. His mantra during those times became Adelanta! A favorite Mexican-born professor told him to always go forward. So, he did. He stuck out the difficult time and joined school organizations, including LULAC and the Hispanic Student Society, to meet new friends.

Today, Encinia plans to become a college advisor or counselor. He will begin coursework for a master’s degree next year. TRiO Student Support Services began at CBC in 1971. The first TRiO Director was Nick Cardenas. Subsequent TRiO SSS directors were Eddie Rojas, Edward Sanchez, Michelle Duran, and the current director, Jeri Morton. TRiO Day is a nationwide annual celebration that recognizes the value of federally-funded TRiO Programs and the successes of their students. TRiO SSS are educational opportunity outreach programs designed to help students from low-income families where neither parent has graduated from college and/ or first generation Americans enter college, graduate and move on to participate more fully in America’s economic and social life. The program also provides information on precollege opportunities. “It is students like Guadalupe Encina that make Trio SSS a success,” said Jeri Morton, project director. “We are proud of him and wish him success in his future endeavors.” Coastal Bend College TRiO SSS staff includes: Morton, Kayla D. Jones, counselor and Sylvia Lopez, secretary. Student Support Services is 100 percent federally-funded Department of Education program with an annual award of $281,511.

PROGRAMS

Criminal justice courses target correctional officers’ schedules In response to the needs of a non-traditional group, Coastal Bend College plans to offer criminal justice classes to match the work schedules of Texas Department of Criminal Justice correctional officers. The pilot program is set to launch this summer.

The college offers about six criminal justice courses every year with two or three each semester. Course offerings to TDCJ employees will change each semester so that the following courses are available on the officer’s schedules:

“Correctional officers can’t attend on the traditional Monday to Thursday schedule of classes,” said Kevin Behr, CBC Professional and Public Services Division Chair. “The vast majority of correctional officers work four on/four off schedules. In this new program, the instructor follows their cycles, not the other way around.”

CRIJ 1301: Introduction to Criminal Justice CRIJ 1306: Court Systems and Practices CRIJ 1307: Crime in America CRIJ 1310: Fundamentals of Criminal Law CRIJ 1313: Juvenile Justice Systems CRIJ 2301: Community Resources in Corrections CRIJ 2313: Correctional Systems and Practices CRIJ 2314: Criminal Investigation CRIJ 2323: Legal Aspects of Law Enforcement CRIJ 2328: Police Systems and Practices

The course offerings and certificates and degree plans are the same as they are for other criminal justice students but the delivery is different in order to meet the needs of that group. More than 60 area correctional officers have expressed interest in the program, according to Behr. The college will offer classes that track the days off of correctional officers. “This course schedule is designed to specifically meet the needs of correctional officers, but the classes are open to everyone,” Behr said. He spoke to TDCJ administrators and found that they were “excited and supportive of the program.” “TDCJ traditionally pushes for more education, but with the correctional officers’ work schedules, it’s rather difficult,” Behr said. The plan is to launch the program for the 12-week summer semester. If interest is high, it will continue. Behr offered to schedule on-site classes, but found by polling potential students that they prefer the collegiate atmosphere of on-campus study. “It is a significant investment of time for us, but it’s something that needed to be done for a long time. We are reaching out to customers,” he said. Courses offered won’t be exclusively criminal justice. The list of available courses on this rotating schedule will grow and change based on the needs of students. The courses are open to everyone so that it doesn’t matter where they are academically.

“Many correctional officers take online classes, but that form of delivery isn’t suitable for every student,” Behr said. Online course offerings are available, even within the criminal justice curriculum, and correctional officers comfortable with that medium can register for those classes or take a combination of classes. Jarod Bleibdrey, a Coastal Bend College graduate and former correctional officer, will teach many of the criminal justice classes. Bleibdrey assisted Behr in getting the program together. The college’s offers a criminal justice certificate and an Associate of Science Degree – Criminal Justice Field of Study. The program helps correctional officer get the academic experiences that they need to get promoted. Classes in both the certificate and degree programs transfer to a university-level, academic program of study in criminal justice. Financial aid is available to eligible students. “We are reaching out to a segment of the community that needs us to adjust,” Behr said. The plan is to offer it in Beeville only. Beeville is the center of correctional activities in the region. For more information, contact Kevin Behr at (361) 354-2338 or kevind@coastalbend.edu.

Art students take on a community art project in the Frank Jostes Visual Arts Building in Beeville. Artists working on the project include, from left, Arrial Mendoza, a psychology major from Beeville; Kristina Alvarado, an art major from Beeville; Meghan Saunders, an art major from Refugio; and Rick Martinez, an art major from Beeville. The piece, Arch of Knowledge, features 100 books suspended in an arch. Road to Success, an acrylic Trompe-l’œil, is inspired by the landscape of the South of France and the Mediterranean. “Each student learns something new whenever he or she works on the piece – light, movement, color, etcetera,” said Jayne Duryea, CBC art instructor and department chair. Students will work on the project throughout the semester. “It is possible that this project will never truly be completed.”

CBC Forum 3800 Charco Road, Beeville, TX 78102 361.354.2399 Pakour, the art of movement, is a combination of running, jumping, vaulting, climbing and moving efficiently. “It teaches you that you can do things that don’t look possible,” said Parkour instructor Jennifer McCall, who will teach a course in the coming weeks through Coastal Bend College Continuing Education. “Parkour is physical and mental; it’s a confidence builder.” The class will be offered outdoors at the walking trail on campus in Beeville, on Tuesday and Thursday nights, March 20-April 19, 6-8 p.m. The beginner’s course is five weeks and participants can earn 2.4 continuing education credits. The minimum age is 15 for this class. There is no maximum age restriction. The beginner’s course emphasizes safely

falling, balancing and precision jumping. Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothing and shoes with gripping soles. No special equipment is necessary. McCall is certified to teach Paukour. She is CPR certified. Her interest in Parkour came out of a desire to be active. “After my children were born, I wasn’t getting to go out and play anymore,” she said. She searched the internet for an activity that she could do that didn’t require a lot of preparation and was something she could do with her kids close by. She watched an online demonstration of a French Parkour group and thought it looked interesting. During a mundane visit to the park with her family, McCall saw a local group working out and begged to

join. Today, she and her husband, Taliesen, are a part of the Corpus Christi Parkour group. “Parkour has discipline. It’s almost spiritual,” she said. What enticed her to the sport was the fact that she had no discipline for weightlifting and found Parkour very similar to child’s play. McCall works out with an advanced group regularly. She said a traditional session includes a 45-minute warm-up, a two- to three-hour workout, and a 45-minute cool down. They use public spaces and parks. “Everywhere you train, we clean. We leave the grounds cleaner than we found them. Building connections in the community is important to our group,” she said. One important aspect of Parkour is its connection to its urban environment. Tracuers, Parkour athletes, use public spaces to engage in the sport. Parkour is a quirky activity, according to McCall, and caters to the fitness needs of a diverse group of athletes. Most of the participants are fit young men who are in shape, but not athletic. Gamers and martial artists enjoy Parkour, as well as mothers looking for a low-preparation activity and fathers looking to regain some of their physical prowess, according to McCall. Parkour is also a release for children and teens to expound pent-up energy. Parkour is growing in popularity around the country, however Parkour competitions, demonstrated as extreme sports on television, are outside of the founding purpose of the sport. “Parkour brings you into the moment and makes you focus,” McCall explained. “It is not a competitive sport. It teaches you to battle yourself.” By offering the class in Beeville, McCall hopes to create more Parkour ambassadors while helping people get in shape and put their personal limits to the test. Nanny Elementary School third-graders go to college The sixth annual Project I Can Too was recently held at Coastal Bend College -- Kingsville Campus. Third grade students from Nanny Elementary in Riviera visited the campus. The 19 visitors listened to a general college presentation and were acclimated to college lingo with respect to admissions, financial aid, scholarships and majors. The goal of Project I Can Too is to encourage and promote higher education in the elementary setting, while not just verbalizing “go college” but giving the young students the knowledge that success starts early in their educational careers. “One of the big hits of the project was the opportunity to actually attend college courses in nursing, cosmetology and English -- having the opportunity to interact with college students and instructors,” said Pete Trevino, CBC Kingsville

Interim Campus Director. The students listened to the story, “The Little Engine That Could,” read by Coastal Bend College Dean of Institutional Advancement, Glynis

Students share the worst advice they ever received As you probably already know, you’ll be getting plenty of “No class is an easy “A,” so don’t be fooled if someone tells advice on what you should do when you get to college. you that a course is a piece of cake.” From aunts and uncles, to older brothers and sisters -- Gary H., SUNY Albany and parents, everyone will have some nugget of wisdom They say “Everyone is always willing to lend a helping hand.” that they are dying to share with you. Classes are a lot “The bad advice I received was that I should schedule lots of afternoon harder and more is expected from you as a classes so that I could sleep in. The college schedule is a little more student. Also, if you miss one day of class or lenient, but coming out of high school you are used to an 8 a.m. to 3 don’t keep up with the work, it is really hard p.m. or 5 p.m. schedule. Most of the officers, who already had college degrees, told me I was too old to think about college because I wouldn’t fit in and couldn’t keep up with those straight out of high school. This has proven to be the worst advice I have ever received. I have been in college for less than one year, and I will receive my Associates in Applied Science this fall semester. I started out with only six semester hours of college credit that the college I chose would accept. I also have maintained a 3.85 GPA and am a member of Phi Theta Kappa. -- Richard H., University of Texas-Brownsville

Parkour (abbreviated PK) is a training method which focuses on rational movement in both the natural and urban environments. The focus is to move around obstacles with speed and efficiency. Developed in France by David Belle, the main purpose of the discipline is to teach participants how to move through their environment by vaulting, rolling, running, climbing and jumping. Parkour practitioners are known as traceurs. They train to be able to identify and utilize alternate, more efficient paths. Parkour can be practiced anywhere, but areas dense with obstacles offer many training opportunities. [www.wikipedia.com]
