information on federal financial aid programs, scholarships, counseling, and instruction in mathematics, laboratory science, foreign language and literature.

For more information on this and other opportunities to pursue an education beyond high school, contact Susan Smedley, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for Coastal Bend College at smedleys@coastalbend.edu or Velma Elizalde, Dean of Student Services, congratulated 361.354.2399. Upward Bound staff in an internal memo to Coastal Bend College employees, saying that both programs had received notification of funding for the next five years. This translates into outreach for 136 disadvantaged area students annually. Elizalde went on to say, “This cycle was a particularly competitive one and we have heard of at least one of the school in our area who was not re-funded, so kudos to our staff Cheryl Baird, April Zapata, Dina Villegas, and Janice Fernandez.” Cheryl Baird, Upward Bound director adds, “The Upward Bound Program, has been housed at Coastal Bend College in Beeville, since 1973. We are very fortunate to be able to continue this great service and have two Upward Bound programs get re-funded. Marathon Oil donates $60,000 to CBC The money will come in $20,000 increments over three years. A portion of the money will be set aside every year for a scholarship fund. Two students per semester will each be awarded a $1,500 scholarship. Coley is still working out the details as to how the scholarship program will work but, regardless, is eager to know it is coming. New equipment will also be purchased with the money. Some of the original equipment was disposed of when the program was phased out, and some equipment was simply out of date. At the top of Coley’s wish list is a Scada simulator, an ITE simulator and a tank battery. Graduation Features Student Speakers “I know that it’s a cliché to say ‘new and exciting,’ but it really is,” says Susan Smedley, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for Coastal Bend College. “Everyone at CBC is excited about this change to our speaker format for graduation.” What Smedley is referring to is the decision to move to student speakers for the college’s May 11, 2012 graduation ceremony. “We had two speakers, one for the morning ceremony which began at 10:00 a.m. and one for the afternoon ceremony that began at 2:00.” The two students, Terilyn Zengerle and Tamara Jo Williams, were selected from a pool of applicants. The college conducted a system wide promotion and search asking for students interested in speaking to submit an application and an overview of what their speech would contain if they were the one selected to speak. The search committee was comprised of faculty representing all four of the college’s campuses.

Terilyn Zengerle from the Beeville campus who spoke at 2:00 p.m. Tamara Jo Williams has been a student at the Coastal Bend College Pleasanton campus since graduating from high school at age 16 in 2010. She has traveled three hours everyday for four semesters to make her classes. She was a member of the Biology Club and Student Government Club and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She plans to attend UTSA in the fall and pursue a Bachelors degree in Microbiology. Ms. Williams currently resides in Gonzales, Texas and is the daughter of Verle Dwayne Williams and Arlene M. Kurtz Williams.

Terilyn Zengerle is graduating from Coastal Bend College with her Associates of Applied Science degree. Ms. Zengerle is a member of Phi Theta Kappa. She plans to attend Del Mar College in Corpus Christi and earn an Associates of Science in Health Information Technology. Ultimately she hopes to attain her Bachelors of Science in Health Information Management from Texas State Speaker for the morning graduation was Tamara Jo University. Ms. Zengerle lives in Yorktown, Texas with her Williams from the college’s Pleasanton campus and husband of 32 years and is the grandmother of seven.

I’ll never forget my time here or how great the staff and instructors have been. I’m just really excited about what the future holds next! Terilyn Zengerle

Getting into ‘top tier’ universities becoming more difficult by Stephanie Moya

skills over time, and they need these skills to be successful in college.”

From an early age, some students have their hearts set on attending a premiere university and they – or their parents – don’t want to settle for anything less. They’ve dreamed of being a Longhorn at the University of Texas. Or an Aggie at Texas A&M’s College Station campus.

Pressure to perform on a timed test scares most students; state-required graduation tests such as the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills allow students unlimited time.

But getting into those top-of-the-line universities is becoming harder and harder, and the pressure to perform in classes as well as on college entrance exams builds. Colleges use the scores on exams such as the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) and ACT (originally, American College Testing program), along with high school grades and class rank, to determine admission. “I felt like the test was a life or death situation,” Senior Victoria Estrada said. “While I was taking the test, I felt relieved that it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I was so stressed and tired though, I started guessing at the end.”

“I’m nervous because I’ve never taken (the SAT and ACT) before,” Junior Dominique Garcez, who plans to take both the ACT and SAT and hopes to get into the University of Houston, said. “The PSAT scared me because I didn’t know how to study for it.” Solis said preparation such as taking the timed PSAT and reviewing the many websites with tips can help ease students’ worries. “Become familiar with the test format before taking the ACT and/or SAT,” she said, noting booklets are obtainable in her office and practice tests are available online. “Maintain your confidence in your abilities and do your best.” Sophomores and juniors took the PSAT on Oct. 12.

With the right preparation and focus, these college entrance exams don’t have to be as nerve-wracking as everyone makes them out to be. Counselor Yolanda Solis is busy helping juniors and seniors meet registration deadlines and get ready for the SAT and ACT tests. “The tests are very important if you are applying to a university,” Solis said. “The scores identify students who have the skills necessary to succeed in college-level courses.” A slate of dates is set aside throughout the year and into next summer, and Solis and several seniors encourage juniors to begin early.

“The only thing I’ve done to prepare myself is the PSAT so far,” said Junior Nick Quintanilla, who wants to go to the University of Texas at Austin as his brother 2007 graduate Travis Quintanilla did. “The PSAT wasn’t as hard as everyone made it out to be.” Honors, Advanced Placement and dual-credit coursework should help students prepare but isn’t required. “I went in thinking that it was going to be really hard, and I was nervous. But when I took it, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be,” Senior Darian Ramirez, who recently took the ACT, said. “The ACT is more based on high school stuff, which I think made it easier.” Test scores on PSAT, SAT and ACT also can qualify students for scholarships.

“You should take the tests as soon as possible ‘cause if you don’t do well, you’ll still have the chance and time to take it again,” Estrada, who plans to attend Coastal Bend College in the fall, advised.

“Most of the scholarships have a set minimum score requirement for a student to be eligible to apply for that specific scholarship,” Solis noted.

The SAT gauges more critical thinking and reasoning skills, while the ACT measures general academic development.

While criteria for every college and university differs, students still aim to score high so their options are open.

“The ACT is an achievement test. Your best preparation is a rigorous high school curriculum,” Solis said. “The SAT is a standardized assessment of critical reading, math reasoning and writing skills. Students have developed these
