Things you should know if you’re ready to transfer 1. Understand How Courses Transfer: Transferring courses is easier in Texas than many other states because Texas has a Common Course Numbering System. This means similar courses that are taught at public colleges and universities in the first two years of college are identified by common numbers. If you’re planning to transfer, these are often the best courses to choose. 2. Get Advising: Most students want to transfer from one school to another without hassles and without losing credit they have already earned. Luckily, you can do this by following a few important steps. Coastal Bend College has advisors trained to help you make the right decisions about what courses to take when you are preparing to transfer. Be sure to contact an advisor at the school you’re planning to transfer to as well. Getting help from both your current school and the new school is the best way to make your transition as smooth as possible. 3. Make a Transfer Plan: Start by identifying a major that corresponds with your chosen career field. Plan carefully, because changing majors can result in course hours lost. There are many courses that transfer from one college or university to another, but your ability to apply those courses to your degree program will depend on if they fit into your transfer school’s degree plan. Transferring schools will work best if you get information about the degree plan you want to follow at the school you want to attend, and then match the required course work as closely as possible prior to transferring. The earlier you identify a plan, the better chance you have of transferring without losing a single credit hour toward your degree plan.
discipline). Coastal Bend College offers field of study curricula in teaching, computer science and criminal justice. More field of study curricula will be added in the future. 7. Special Articulation Agreements: Coastal Bend College has articulation agreements with many public universities for transfer of credit. An articulation agreement is a contract that spells out exactly which courses will transfer to which degree programs and how the credit will be applied. Many schools have articulation agreements that will allow you to apply a complete associate’s degree program to a bachelor’s degree at your transfer school. 8. Know Which Courses and Programs are Designed to Transfer: It’s important to remember that there are several types of college credit. Academic transfer courses are the common courses that transfer to most public universities. Workforce education courses are designed to give you skills for immediate employment, and many of these courses may not transfer to universities. Workforce continuing education courses are also technical in nature but do not result in college credit at all. Associate of Arts (AA) Degrees and Associate of Science (AS) Degrees are designed to transfer. Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degrees contain some transfer courses and technical courses that may transfer to Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) Degrees.
4. Shop Around: Sometimes students make decisions about where to attend college without looking at all the options. Of course, the first priority is finding a college that offers the degree program you want and has the other qualities you’re looking for in a school. As a transfer student, you may also want to look for a university that has a strong transfer relationship with CBC. 9. Transfer Dispute Resolution: If you transfer to a public university in Texas and believe you 5. Take the Core Curriculum: If you plan to receive a bachelor’s were entitled to more transfer credit than you degree from a public university, Texas law requires that you complete received, you have the right to ask for transfer a core curriculum of between 42 and 48 credit hours. Dual credit event coming for high school sophomores A.C. Jones High School sophomores and parents are encouraged to attend the Passport Program, a dual credit information session presented by the high school and Coastal Bend College, to receive information regarding tuition-free courses students, who are Bee County residents, may take as early as this summer that count for both high school and college credit (dual credit). The Passport Program will take place at Coastal Bend College on March 25, 2011, starting at 9 a.m. in the Peter S. Marecek Physical Fitness Center. Tenth-graders, whose parents signed permission slips, will be brought to CBC to learn about earning credits in academic classes and/or in workforce programs. Students may take basic academic courses toward bachelor’s degrees or earn certificates in areas including welding, law enforcement, computers, certified nursing and nail technology. They will also receive a CBC Passport that provides information about these courses. A Coastal Bend College identification card opens doors to college resources including the library and computer labs and gives card holders free admission to college sports events and performances. Information sessions and campus tours are available for parents who attend. Parents may also participate in roundtable discussions regarding educational opportunities for their children. Lunch will be provided at no charge. For additional information, please contact Jennifer Linney at (361) 354-2722 or email her at jcoker@coastalbend.edu.

We’ve put together a list of some things you can do to help manage the negative stress and put yourself on a positive path to success. GET SOME EXERCISE! Physical activity releases natural endorphins, which make you feel great and can alleviate stress. EAT HEALTHY FOODS! Avoid foods high in fat, sugar and sodium. Eat healthy snacks and don’t skip meals. TAKE BREAKS! Schedule a few short breaks throughout the day to help minimize your stress. Stretch, go for a walk, call a friend. When you get back to what you were doing, you’ll work more efficiently. LEARN TO SAY NO! Don’t feel guilty when you have to tell others no. Taking on additional work when you are already
Talking with someone else can help clear your mind and give you a fresh perspective. LAUGH! As the saying goes, “laughter is the best medicine.” Maintaining your sense of humor and the ability to laugh at yourself can really diffuse a stressful situation. CONTROL WHAT YOU CAN! Crying during periods of stress can be a healthy way to relieve your anxiety, and it might prevent a headache or other physical consequences of keeping things bottled up. But, if you are crying every day, this might be a sign
