College History Bee County Junior College District was created by election on November 2, 1965. The election resulted from several years of work to establish a community college for Bee County. Support was shown by residents in an overwhelming five-to-one majority for the creation of the district. The desire for a community college was again demonstrated on December 7, 1965, when district citizens approved a tax to support BCC, and bond issues to build the college. The Board of Trustees changed the college name from Bee County College to Coastal Bend College on September 1, 1998. The name change was made because the service area was extended by an act of the Texas Legislature in 1995. The Coastal Bend College service area includes Karnes, McMullen, Live Oak, Bee, Duval, Jim Wells and Brooks Counties, and parts of Atascosa and Kleberg Counties. The original board of trustees was Robert J. Beasley, George F. Elam, Jr., Frank Jostes, Fred C. Latcham, Jr., Peter S. Marecek, Paul A. Schulz and George Spikes. The board, elected in November, selected Grady C. Hogue as the first BCC President. Its second chief executive, Dr. Norman E. Wallace, became president in 1984. Dr. John M. Brockman, became the college’s third president on September 1, 1999. CBC’s current president, Dr. Thomas B. Baynum, came to the college in 2007. Bee County College opened in September, 1967, with 790 students, 24 full-time instructors and 11 part-time teachers. Enrollment in academic, workforce education and continuing education classes during the spring of 2007 was 2,946. Beeville and Bee County Bee County was organized in 1858, and Beeville, the county seat, was developed in 1860. The City of Beeville was incorporated in 1908. Today, major segments of the economy are farming, ranching, oil, and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The county has many active oil and gas wells. Beeville is in the center of Bee County. The terrain ranges from level to gently rolling slopes. The temperature is warm. It is influenced by the nearby Gulf of Mexico. There are prevailing southerly winds of 8 to

10 miles per hour. Annual rainfall is about 30 inches, and is evenly distributed throughout the year. Coastal Bend College is located at 3800 Charco Road. The main campus is in Beeville. Alice Campus CBC Alice Campus is located at 704 Coyote Trail. Academic-transfer courses and workforce education programs in accounting, automotive technology, computer information technology, child development, general office management, law enforcement, office automation technology, vocational nursing, and welding technology are offered in Alice. Courses lead to degrees and certificates in several major areas of study. CBC Lott-Canada Facility Coastal Bend College’s Continuing Education program is headquartered at the Lott-Canada Facility in Beeville. This historical building, located on the west side of town, has played a vital role in educating Beeville’s youth. The building is nationally recognized as one of the few remaining Rosenwald Schools in Texas. It was once used by local African-American students. Once Beeville schools were fully integrated, the school was used for offices and special programs. Lott-Canada alumni assisted in the restoration of this building. Continuing Ed classes are held on all CBC campuses throughout the year. Presidents Dr. Grady C. Hogue Dr. Norman E. Wallace Dr. John M. Brockman Dr. Thomas B. Baynum

NJCAA Sports

CBC rejoined the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), the governing body of intercollegiate athletics for two-year colleges, in 2007, to compete in men’s basketball and women’s volleyball. Since that time, the college has added men’s soccer and women’s softball. The college now boasts four full-time sports programs for student athletes. CBC membership in NJCAA provides its students an opportunity to compete at a collegiate level against other teams in the region. NJCAA’s programs are designed to meet the needs of a diverse group of student-athletes from varied backgrounds who have chosen to attend a two-year college as the next step in their education. Given this perspective, the NJCAA accepts its responsibility for providing a competitive environment that is free from drug and substance abuse. This effort in turn helps to support a sportsmanlike, competitive environment that is both wholesome and healthy.

Benefits to CBC Student Athletes

Participation in competitive sports provides several benefits to student athletes including: • • • • • • •

Opportunity to participate in team sports; Earning recognition for athletic and leadership skills; Maintaining an active lifestyle which promotes physical fitness; An additional year or two to mature and develop skills; The possibility of catching the eye of a college scout; Dorm scholarships to eligible participants; Steady progress toward graduation in part because of the requirements to carry 15 hours and participate in tutorials. www.coastalbend.edu/sports || 13

Married students are required to submit a notarized copy of the marriage certificate along with the housing application. A maximum of one dependent child is allowed for married or singleparent students. The child must be age six or younger at the time of enrollment. Note: Receipt of the deposit does not automatically guarantee an apartment or residence hall assignment. Deposit will be refunded if non-occupancy is due to CBC decision.

Organizations & Events

CBC encourages the formation of any worthwhile student organization. Each of the college’s student organizations has a faculty advisor, student officers and purposes in harmony with the total college community. With the exception of certain honorary societies, clubs and organizations are open for membership to any CBC student. Currently, there are approximately 30 student clubs, honorary societies and organizations operating within the college system. CBC staff and faculty work hard to ensure the academic calender offers special events, presentations and performances that are enjoyable, enriching and enlightening for all students regardless of their interests.

Culture & The Arts

The college strives to provide students with exposure to a diverse array of cultural and artistic experiences. In recent years, the college has hosted performances from artists representing such musical genres as Americana, Baroque, blues, bluegrass, classical, jazz and Latin jazz, Mariachi, and world music to name just a few. In 2008 CBC formed the Coastal Bend College Community Performing Arts Project. Comprised of Coastal Bend College faculty, staff, students and the Beeville Community

Chorus, the group supports the performing arts while giving community members the opportunity to participate. And participate they have in musicals such as “Sound of Music,” “Oklahoma!” and “Once Upon A Mattress.” These shows have been cast with community members and college students ranging in age from five to 75. All on-campus performances are free to our students and the general public unless otherwise stated. Additionally, the CBC Visual Arts Department boasts one of only two fully functioning, academic glass blowing facilities in the state. Visiting artists and artists-in-residence regularly demonstrate glassblowing techniques and display their works of art. Receptions and gallery viewings occur often throughout the year and are open to the public. An added perk of having an established and recognized visual arts program on campus is that students, faculty, staff and the public have the opportunity to purchase the works of both emerging and established artists. It not only represents an investment in the future of an artist but brings to the art patron the opportunity to purchase art that may increase in value significantly over the years as the reputation of the artist grows. www.coastalbend.edu/sports || 15
