THINGS TO DO

Summer of art By Ron Fortier

Art is an important component of a child’s growth and development. Here’s an invitation to every parent to consider these wonderful local summer art programs.

A

rt should play a more important part of not just a primary school education, but a secondary education as well. However, it always seems that the arts are considered expendable when austerity looms its ugly head because school committees and school boards feel that it is the only way to keep the bottom line in check. Studies published in Education Next and Educational Researcher report that children who visit museums and performing arts center demonstrate higher levels of engagement not only in the arts, but also in their general behavior. They are more tolerant, empathetic, utilize more critical thinking skills, and generally fare better in other subjects. The earlier children are exposed to the arts, especially during their early and most important phase of emotional, physical, and cognitive growth, the better. A National Endowment for the Arts report on how young children from birth to age eight are affected by exposure to the arts reveals that the social and emotional outcomes are associated with better developed social skills including sharing, caring, and empathy. Including the arts in standard curricula along with other extracurricular activities has helped to stabilized student dropout rates. With all that in mind, why not check out these two summer programs?

vacation-2019 or call Deb Smook, the Education Director, at (508) 961-3072.

Dream out loud and more Some of the programs offered by the Dream Out Loud Center includes the Creative Careers Program for youth between the ages of 12 to 18. Students participate in classes that help them to create pieces for publications and performances, and then show them how to market and sell their work. The Center will be offering Free Creative Careers Classes for ages 6 to 18 in creative writing, graphic design, songwriting, music, and filmmaking. Also on tap, the Dream Out Loud Center will be hosting Summer Performances, a variety of open mic and youth performances during the summer on AHA! Nights (ahanewbedford.org). For more information, visit dreamoutloudcenter.org or email them at information@dreamoutloudnow.org. There are many offerings through various artists groups and individual artist’s studios. The cobblestones of the New

Bedford Whaling National Historical Park offer a lot of opportunities to visit artist studios and explore the waterfront. There is a visual feast in the historic city including the New Bedford Whaling Museum whose excellent collection offers something for every age especially the whale ship Lagoda, the largest scale model in the world! How about a summer musical theatre camp? The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center is presenting Lights Up!, a musical theater camp where students learn, play, and perform a musical production in just one week! The Lights Up! experience includes singing, dancing, acting and more with professional actors from Chicago. No experience is necessary! The Lights Up! musical theater camp will be performing Peter Pan from August 5 through 9. You can learn more information at zeiterion.org/ lights-up-musical-theatre-summer-camp. SUPERFLAT’s Kim Goddard oversees a mural installation during AHA! New Bedford.

PAINTING THE TOWN By Steven Froias

Public murals are likely the most accessible kind of art—even if all you’re doing is going about your day, you may find massive artworks along your path. SUPERFLAT NB wants you to have that experience more often. It’s a neighborhood-driven, artist-led organization that aims to beautify sections of downtown New Bedford while eliminating, or “flattening,” existing barriers to the arts. It launched last summer with a mural festival, but is gearing up for 2019 with a huge boost from MassDevelopment. MassDevelopment and the civic crowdfunding platform Patronicity have launched a new Commonwealth Places campaign with SUPERFLAT. The organization will then use campaign funds to install ten large-scale murals around the

8

city’s downtown, north end, and south end, employing world-renowned artists who will work in partnership with the local arts community to develop designs that reflect New Bedford’s unique artistic and cultural heritage. “In recent years, we’ve seen cities and towns across Massachusetts use public art as a tool to draw people in, activate neighborhoods, and enrich local arts and cultural communities,” states MassDevelopment President and CEO Lauren Liss. “MassDevelopment

looks forward to helping SUPERFLAT achieve these goals through Commonwealth Places.” If the campaign reaches its crowdfunding goal of $50,000 by May 30 at midnight, the project will win a matching grant with funds from MassDevelopment’s Commonwealth Places.

MAKE A STATEMENT “This project is a labor of love,” according to Jeremiah Hernandez, Co-Founder of SUPERFLAT NB. “We found

there was a barrier for the people of our neighborhood to come to a gallery or art museum. SUPERFLAT wants to flatten that barrier by bringing public art to the people, neighborhoods, and community of New Bedford in a way that’s accessible.” SUPERFLAT began the fundraising drive on April 1, but kicked it up a notch during AHA! New Bedford on Thursday, April 11.There, the mural group did what it does best: put up a mural! Rather than paint, the group wheat-pasted a special

CITY’S PALETTE The SUPERFLAT NB mural project will take place within New Bedford’s Transformative Development Initiative (TDI) District. TDI is a separate MassDevelopment program designed to accelerate economic growth within focused districts in Gateway Cities. The program works with cross-sector partnerships to engage community members in actionable planning,

implement local economic development initiatives, and spur further public and private investment. Since TDI was launched in New Bedford in 2016, community stakeholders identified public art and, in particular, a mural program, as a priority in nearly every project undertaken – from specific site planning studies to more general partnership meetings. TDI Fellow Jim McKeag, along with the New Bedford TDI Partnership, supported this local priority. He has acted as a convener and facilitator for community leaders and artists. In that role, he has coordinated with funders and supported grant applications, which, in addition to local public and private contributions, were used to fund seven large-scale public art projects in 2018, like last year’s SUPERFLAT mural festival. The group plans another festival this August, and will also be launching an artist referral program that will seek to connect creatives with private businesses. Additionally, they plan to begin an Artist-InResidence program. Another goal of the group is to engage youth in the city. Indeed, they write on their website, superflatnb.org, “The youth of this community is an important participant and recipient of our efforts. We endeavor to inspire them and expand their cultural point of view by connecting them to resources and opportunities. In 2019 we want to expand programming throughout the city, directly engaging youth and residents in the inspiration, ideation, and creation of transformative public art.” If you’d like to help SUPERFLAT reach their goal and make New Bedford even more beautiful, visit patronicity.com/superflat.

series of photos along the “SUPERFLAT” wall across from Custom House Square Park. All the photos were shot a few weeks before in the nearby Co-Creative Center. They depict artists from throughout New Bedford and the region, and were shot by team member Kim Goddard. She was on-hand to oversee their application to the wall during the evening, which showcased what the group does and why they are a good arts investment. MassDevelopment obviously agreed. Commonwealth Places is a collaborative initiative from MassDevelopment and Patronicity that leverages public support for placemaking projects through crowdfunding and a matching grant from the organization. The program engages residents in the development of strategic projects in their towns and cities, and they determined SUPERFLAT met those criteria. The program has supported successful campaigns across the Commonwealth, from Northampton to Hyannis. Communities, nonprofits, and other entities can learn more about these successful projects, donate to ongoing campaigns, and apply at massdevelopment.com/ commonwealthplaces.

FALL RIVER C.A.N. by Ashley Lessa

2019 is shaping up to be an exciting year in Fall River! The Creative Arts Network (C.A.N.) has been supporting arts and culture in the city for five years now (originally under the name AHA! Fall River), and this summer and beyond C.A.N. is continuing to bring cultural events to the city for all ages to enjoy. Sandy and Dave Dennis, the Executive Director and Board Chairman respectively, are the couple that heads the organization which aims “to celebrate, stimulate, and nurture arts, culture, entertainment, and tourism in the Greater Fall River area.” Through their user-friendly website, creativeartsnetwork.org, they have a created a one-stop source of information for locals, tourists, business owners and artists alike with everything needed to enjoy, create, and support arts and culture in the area. They also provide information about upcoming events, local businesses, restaurants, and hotels so people can eat, stay, play, and enjoy all the historic city of Fall River has to offer! This April, C.A.N. once again partnered with ArtWeek, a 10-day arts and culture festival occurring in towns and cities across Massachusetts presented by Highland Street Foundation and produced by the Boch Center. This

10

year, the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism have become new Lead Champions for the event which aims to bring hands-on programming to those interested in learning more about the creative process. Now, C.A.N. is looking ahead to an exciting summer!

Exciting events

On June 15 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. C.A.N. will host the Third Annual Waterfront Arts and Music Festival. Visitors of all ages can enjoy this free event, held at DCR MA Heritage State Park, 200 Davol Street in Fall River. Live bands will play throughout the day, including Louie Leeman and Cheap Sneakers, The Galactic Shag, Steve Smith and the Nakeds, and Back in the Day. Artisan booths, strolling performers, and food are sure to entertain the entire family! Then on June 21, join C.A.N. for the highly anticipated Block Island Music and Dinner

May 2019 | The South Coast Insider

Cruise! Hop on board the Block Island ferry and celebrate the summer solstice with a sunset dinner cruise on the longest day of the year! Boarding starts at 5:15 p.m. and the ferry sets sail at 6 p.m. sharp! Tickets are $75 per person and only 125 are available. A steel drum band will play on the top deck while Louie Leeman will play below. Participants will enjoy a dinner of chowder, deluxe antipasto, a hot buffet, and dessert! Drinks will also be sold for additional fees. You can buy tickets by calling 508-294-5355 or by visiting creativeartsnetwork.org. Also in June is the Downtown Music Series, every Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., in front of the Cherry & Webb Gallery. Break up your work week by stopping by during your lunch hour and enjoying some local live music! A perfect way to entertain the kids (and yourself) this summer is Food and Movie Flicks, put on in partnership with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), which will run every Wednesday from July 10 through August 18 at Heritage State Park. Free movie screenings, food for the kids, and a children’s cooking class are part of the programming!

Cultivating arts and culture

While C.A.N. puts on some well-loved events, they are also working on some larger

projects this year. The organization is continuing to work toward further building up Fall River’s arts and culture scene, as well as making all that the city has to offer more accessible for everyone. For example, “We’ve been getting a lot of requests for some sort of cultural map,” explains Sandy Dennis, so with the help of artist Don Hammontree, they are creating prints that will soon be available featuring a map of the cultural spots in Fall River! Also in the works is an accessible trolley for use during cultural events. The Fall River Disability Commission is working with C.A.N. on this project and matching funds raised, but the project still needs financial support to continue to move forward. If you are a local business interested in sponsoring this project, you can get in touch with C.A.N. through their website. Hopefully, the trolley will be rolled out at the end of 2019, and will then be available at downtown community events throughout the year. It is anticipated to have “a significant social impact on the city” says Dave Dennis. Perhaps the largest project C.A.N. has taken on will hopefully come to fruition this August. C.A.N. has been working with the Massachusetts Cultural Council to lead the charge for the creation of a designated cultural district along the waterfront in Fall River. As a state-recognized

cultural district, Fall River would receive both publicity and financial benefits from the state, thus allowing for expanded programming in the area. “We’re the last major city in the South Coast that doesn’t have a cultural district,” explains Dave Dennis. “That could happen as soon as August this year, but it’s a project we’ve been… shepherding for five years now, going back a couple of different administrations.” If the cultural district gets the go-ahead, this August will certainly have some wonderful public celebrations in store as well!

an eye on their community calendar early in your planning process; that way if a date is oversaturated with other public events you will know early! When you have a date in mind, you can post it right to the calendar yourself. C.A.N. will quickly review and post it as long as it is a good fit for the site! Partners support arts and culture in Fall River in many ways, whether it’s opening their doors during C.A.N. events to contributing financially, in exchange for recognition on a variety of platforms. Fall River is truly thriving. As 2019 progresses and Fall River looks to create their cultural district, it is clear that arts and culture are alive here in the South Coast. THINGS TO DO

The arts juggernaut The Hatch Arts Weekend spans four floors of artists studios.

By Steven Froias

H

atch Street Studios in New Bedford’s north end is enjoying renewed life as a one-of-a-kind destination for the arts in the South Coast. The studios are located at the heart of the historic Nashawena Mill District. Situated in two former textile buildings, at 88 and 90 Hatch Street, it is now the creative hub for more than 65 professional visual and performing artists. These artists work in a variety of media, ranging from painting, drawing, sculpture, fine furniture making and restoration, jewelry, fiber art, and performance arts. Hatch Street Studios is owned and operated by Jeff Glassman, president of Darn It!, also located in New Bedford. It’s a company that provides door-to-door logistic solutions, warehousing, and distribution services for the ever-changing

needs of retailers, manufacturers, and wholesalers. Along with his wife, Lori, they have made a commitment to double down on the arts at Hatch Street Studios. That has laid the groundwork for its recent impressive growth and influence in the region. Shortly after purchasing the property, Glassman added an entirely new floor of individual artists studios available for rent at reasonable rates. Today, there are three full floors of studio spaces at 88 Hatch Street, and communal spaces to accommodate public happenings and create a sense of community. He also made other improvements to 88 Hatch Street and began renovating 90 Hatch, offering smaller, office-type spaces for rent to artists and small creative businesses. Through it all, he has been a champion of the artists at Hatch Street Studios and

the work they produce. Glassman has acted as an important bridge between the creative and business community in the city. He has invited the Chamber of Commerce to Hatch Street Studios for after-hours networking with the artists, and represents them at many community meetings. Glassman is also a member of New Bedford’s newly-launched Creative Consortium.

Blended colors The artists themselves have been busy, organizing as the Hatch Street Studios Artists Association and holding many special events over the last year or so, inviting the public in on a regular basis to see what’s happening and what’s being created in their city. They have also rebranded the building with a new logo, improved marketing, and more programming. This May, Hatch Street Studios will take part in the state-wide ArtWeek with the Hatch Arts Weekend on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days. This is the first of an annual arts celebration to cap off ArtWeek.

The free event is open to the general public and will feature special interactive arts projects, participatory performances, behind-the-scenes studio tours, and exhibitions by dozens of visual and performing artists. The event is accessible via a manned elevator on the Hatch Street side of the building or the front stairway facing the parking lot. ArtWeek works to spotlight how the creative economy is thriving in Massachusetts by offering unique and affordable neighborhood-based events that provide increased access to art, culture, and creativity. Through community, artistic, and media collaborations, the festival provides experiences in dance, folk and traditional arts, fashion, media arts, spoken-word, poetry, writing, contemporary visual arts, music, opera, theater, design, film, and much more. ArtWeek (artweekma.org) was born in Boston in 2013 and now serves over 100 towns across Massachusetts as the signature nonprofit community program of the Boch Center. It’s just the latest way Hatch Street Studios is expanding its creative footprint in the city and region. Another way is with a plethora of classes and special instruction courses offered by the individual artists and residents of the building that also invite the public in to express their own creative selves. At Hatch Street Studios, you can find lessons in everything from drawing to painting to sculpting at various times throughout the year. There’s even an all-ages aerial performance studio – and even a clown school! Last May, Hatch Street Studios held an open studios tour, another milestone for the building. In addition to its annual Holiday Open Studios in November, it signified that the historic buildings in New Bedford were marching into a new future. For the occasion, artists Alexx Jardin, Meaggsy Bogues, and Brian Tillett created new murals at Hatch Street that constituted visual reinforcement that the long-time home to artists was embracing that future by reaching out into the community. The best way to keep track of everything happening at Hatch Street is to follow them on Facebook. Their page can be found at Facebook.com/ HatchStreetStudios.

BUSINESS BUZZ

The Emerging Young Artists 2019 Juried Exhibition received submissions from 350 your artists

Art by numbers By Ron Fortier

ow many artists and artisans are there in New Bedford? How many studios, galleries, and museums are there to visit? How many hotels and restaurants are there to make it a great day trip or an overnight stay? Well, it depends on what you want to see and do when you arrive. First things first: New Bedford has consistently been recognized as America’s Number One Fishing Port. In 2011, just eight years ago, Richard Florida, author of The Rise of the Creative Class, ranked the city as the, “…seventh most artistic city in America in proportion to its population, alongside the likes of San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles.”

14

May 2019 | The South Coast Insider

The accolades just keep adding up! In 2017, New Bedford was named the most creative community in the state by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. It has also been ranked ninth on Matador Network’s list of Most Creative Towns, nestled between Detroit and New Orleans, and sixth on Bustle’s Best Cities for Young Artists. The creative community in this both fabled and lauded city is comprised of sculptors, painters, designers, furniture makers, potter/ceramicists, metalsmiths, and printmakers. And they—artists and artisans—are everywhere! To start, there are three places to find a significant number of artist studios in one location. The Hatch Street Studios are in the north end of the city and home to dozens of artists,

as is the S&G Project Gallery, which features works of a certain theme and artist collaborations. In the City’s the south end, at Clarks Point, is another repurposed textile mill filled with a mixture of tenants and artists who set up their studios in the Kilburn Mill. Closer to Interstate-195 is another former textile building—a weave shed turned into a rope manufacturer and then, converted into a space where artists live and work; the aptly named Ropeworks Artist Condominium. There is quite the collection of hybrid callers and studio-galleries throughout the city. Hybrid galleries have multiple purposes, including housing the artist’s studio, a retail shop, of serving as a classroom for community education.

And of course, they also function as display centers for the artist’s work! Studio-galleries are just that: a place to work and display the artist’s work. One of the longest-lived cooperative galleries is Gallery X, which has been in operation since the 1990. Larger exhibition venues include The University Art Gallery of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and the New Bedford Art Museum. Rounding out the city’s must-see repositories of art is the still vibrant and globally acclaimed New Bedford Whaling Museum which has continually grown and evolved since its founding in 1903. There are also galleries to visit at the new Co-Creative Center and Ground Work CoWorking Center. Some of the many hybrid galleries in New Bedford include the S&G Project Gallery (Hatch Street Studio) Judith Klein Art Gallery and the Winston Galley/Victor Da Silva Studio (Kilburn Mill), and Art Scapes which offers a makerspace and gallery. Those within walking distance from each other in the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park area include the Intarawut Southeast Asian Gallery, the TL6 Gallery, the Alison Wells Fine Art Studio & Gallery, the Paradise McFee Gallery, the Arthur Moniz Gallery, and the Robert Duff Gallery. If you’re in town on the second Thursday of each month, make sure to fit in the AHA! (Art, History & Architecture) agenda. AHA! is a free monthly collaborative cultural event. During this event you can snack or dine at many different restaurants within walking distance from each other in the downtown area or the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. Citywide, there’s also at least a couple of popular restaurants, or more, near the three large art studio locations in the north and south end of the city. There are menus offering sushi to Portuguese food and everything in between including, of course, seafood from America’s Number One Fishing Port! It all adds up to a worthwhile visit any time of the year.

COVER STORY

Everything asparagus! Elizabeth Morse Read

May is National Asparagus Month! There’s no surer sign of spring than seeing bundles of bright green native asparagus in the grocery stores, at farmers markets, and on the menus in restaurants, starting in April. This delicious, nutritious, and versatile vegetable is a go-to ingredient for breakfasts, appetizers, salads, soups, and savory dinners both hot and cold! A super-healthy vegetable

Asparagus is one of those super-foods that should be included in everyone’s diet. It’s high in antioxidants like vitamins A, B complex, C, E, K, and rich in minerals like zinc, calcium, iron, manganese, and selenium – all of which can reduce the risk of chronic illnesses like type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. One of the phytonutrients in asparagus is saponin, which has been proved to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties and associated with improved blood pressure and blood sugar levels. In addition, asparagus contains a prebiotic compound called inulin, a carbohydrate which passes undigested to the large intestine, and which improves nutrient absorption and decreases the risk of both allergies and colon cancer. Most importantly, asparagus is very high in folic acid, which regulates red blood cell

formation and liver health, and is a crucial nutrient for pregnant women. Best of all, asparagus is high in fiber, low in calories, and contains no sodium, cholesterol, or saturated fats! As many asparagus lovers know, it is a natural diuretic, which helps reduce fluid retention, speeds recovery from urinary tract infections, and helps the body rid itself of toxins.

Asparagus preparation

Asparagus comes in green, white, and even purple varieties, but all stalks should be odorless and firm and the tips should be dry and tightly closed when you purchase them. Although it’s best eaten on the day of purchase, you can store fresh asparagus in the refrigerator for up to four days by wrapping the stalk ends in a wet paper towel and placing them in a sealed plastic bag.

Choose one asparagus spear from the bunch, grab each end gently and bend it until the inedible woody stalk end “snaps” off naturally – you can then use that spear as a guide for cutting off the ends of the rest of spears. Rinse the spears thoroughly in cool water to remove sand and dirt before cooking.

Cooking asparagus

Asparagus is best steamed or parboiled until just-tender (four-to-six minutes, depending upon thickness), but it’s also delicious sautéed, roasted, or grilled – just don’t overcook it! Steamed asparagus can be sliced up and added to sandwiches, green salads, pizza toppings, stir-fry, soups, or tossed with pasta. The subtly sweet flavor of asparagus pairs especially well with egg dishes, so use them in scrambled eggs, omelets, CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

souffles, frittatas, quiche, or on toast with a poached egg. Asparagus also goes well with seafood, chicken, ham, or lamb, and is especially good when tossed in savory dishes using pasta, risotto, couscous, pilaf, or rice. It is best complemented with flavors like lemon, dill, garlic, and even mild cheeses. It is an endlessly versatile vegetable, limited only by your own culinary creativity [see sidebar]. If you’re going to use asparagus in salads or cold dishes, blanch them first by placing them in boiling water for three minutes, then placing them immediately in an ice bath. To oven-roast asparagus, toss the cleaned spears in olive oil, a pinch of crushed rosemary, and a bit of salt and black pepper. Line them up separately on a non-stick cookie sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes in a preheated 450 degree oven, depending upon thickness. If you want to grill asparagus, choose only thick spears. Coat the grill with olive oil spray, then cook the spears on medium-high heat for six-to-eight minutes until tender, turning occasionally. To make a crispy salad/side dish, marinate thin spears of asparagus, cherry tomatoes, and slices of red onion in herbed olive oil or your favorite Italian dressing overnight in a sealed plastic bag.

n n

2 lbs. asparagus, trimmed and chopped

½ teaspoon cayenne pepper or hot paprika n

Cook until cauliflower is tender, about fifteen minutes. Stir in asparagus and return heat to high, and cook about 5-6 minutes until asparagus is tender but still bright green. Add dill weed, remove from heat. Blend soup with an immersion blender until smooth. Garnish with a few sprigs of dill weed; salt and pepper to taste.

Dressing

n

1 Tbs. white balsamic vinegar (or white cooking wine) n

2 Tbs. fresh lemon juice

n

2 teaspoons honey mustard (optional)

n

Cook orzo according to directions until al dente, drain, and rinse with cold water. Toss with 2 Tbs. olive oil in a large bowl to prevent sticking, set aside. Sautee garlic and asparagus in 2 Tbs. olive oil over medium-high heat, stirring frequently, until asparagus is semi-tender, about four minutes, then stir in shrimp. Stir for another minute. Toss orzo, asparagus, shrimp and scallions in 2 Tsp. olive oil until coated. In a separate bowl, whisk vinegar, lemon juice, mustard, and basil thoroughly. Pour dressing over other ingredients and toss until fully incorporated. Chill for at least two hours to let flavors marry. Serve hot or cold.

“Spears in a Blanket” Tired of serving “pig in a blanket” as an appetizer? Try this tasty alternative! 10 oz. can refrigerated crescent roll dough n

3-4 Tbs. olive oil

n

8 thin slices of prosciutto ham

n

8 asparagus spears, trimmed

n

4 square slices provolone cheese, cut in half diagonally n

Pinch of Italian herbs (optional)

n

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. On a lightly-floured surface, unroll and separate dough into eight triangles, with the skinny end facing away from you. Using a pastry brush, lightly brush olive oil on each triangle. Place a triangle of cheese on the wide end of each dough triangle. Carefully wrap the middle of each asparagus spear with a slice of the prosciutto, then place it on top of the cheese (the tip and the end of the spear will hang outside the dough). Roll the dough from the wide end around the cheese and asparagus/prosciutto toward the skinny end and press end to hold it firmly in place. Brush olive oil on the top of each roll-up, including asparagus, and sprinkle with herbs. Bake on a non-stick cookie sheet until lightly browned, about 15 minutes. Remove and cool on a wire rack.

ON MY MIND

Pennies from heaven

T

here are signs, if you’re open to them. I finished up an acting gig recently north of Boston. Acting is one of the things my father always wanted to do but never tried, and that I do it now, I am absolutely sure, is because of the seed of talent I got from him. So that day I went for a walk in the woods, being my father’s son for another reason: our shared love of the outdoors, the trees, fresh air, the warming sun. Up ahead, moving so delicately they were almost silent, two white-tailed deer playfully danced across my path. They stopped about 50 yards into the woods, turned, and looked at me. I looked back, motionless, not wanting to scare them. In a moment they just slowly ambled away, not scared a whit. My dad was a deer hunter, though he never really cared if he got any, which was good because he rarely got any. He just loved being in the woods. If my dad had a spirit animal, it was definitely deer. And the second I saw those two beautiful, gentle creatures turn to look at me I knew they were the spirits of my dad and my mom. I knew it was their way of saying they were still looking after me. As always. I texted my daughter later that day who said she had dreamed of my father the night before. He was sprinkling money on us from above. I had to laugh – that’s definitely my father, always wishing he had money to lavish us with, lamenting he couldn’t do more though just being a great dad was more than enough.

by Paul Kandarian She also said she was at a stoplight recently and suddenly smelled my dad’s cigar smoke out of nowhere. She burst into tears and drove on, smiling. On the way home, I started fantasizing about hitting Powerball, and the things I’d do with the money in my parents’ name. Something else suddenly hit me: I’d buy a ‘57 Thunderbird. My dad had one long ago. He’d owned a lot of cars in his life, but always loved that T-Bird the most, his

favorite. And naturally, it became one of mine. Later that same day, I drove past a parked ‘57 Thunderbird. A friend of mine, Steven Macek, is a medium. I did a story on him a few years ago, and he did a reading with me and through him my dad weighed in on things that only my dad and I would know about. Steven is brilliant at what he does, and has a radio show on WARA in Attleboro, called

“Through the Static.” You can check him out at steventhemedium.com. Most recently, I was driving home from an acting job in Connecticut, feeling on top of the world because I was doing what I love. Steven’s show was airing live on Facebook, but I couldn’t really hear it, so I fiddled with my radio trying to find it. I couldn’t, so I left it on whatever random AM station I’d turned it to, and lowered the volume, calling into the station instead. On hold, I heard Steven telling a caller something about a ring, a man’s ring. And then something about a lion. And then a message from someone named Julie. The guy didn’t have any idea what that meant. But I did. One of my proudest possessions is my dad’s ring; it was his dad’s before that. My dad belonged to the Lion’s Club; he and friends built a hunting camp in Maine they dubbed the Lion’s Den that was my father’s favorite place on Earth. My mom’s mom’s name was Julia; I adored my grandmother and had just been thinking of all my grandparents the days before. I got on the air next and blurted all of this to Steven who laughed, and said sometimes spirits chime in early, and that my dad seemed a very impatient man. Steven, you don’t know the half of how impatient my dad was. And still is, apparently. The call ended. I turned the radio back on. And through the static of this supposedly random station I’d stopped at, came Eddie Fisher singing “You Gotta Have Heart” from 1955. Which was one of my dad’s favorite songs to sing. I hadn’t heard it in decades. I hadn’t thought of my dad singing it for even longer. But the second I heard it, the memory of my old man crooning it to my mother snapped into my mind with crystal clarity. Yeah, okay, this all sounds crazy, a little woo-woo, I get it. But everyone has their own version of spirituality that feeds their souls. This is mine. At various times in his life, my dad, when he realized how blessed he was in abundance in ways that had nothing to do with money, would smile, lift his shot of VO and say, “Who’s got more than us?” Nobody, Dad. I feel the same way because I still got you in my life. I see the signs.
