Welcome to the 33rd COBIS Annual Conference Dear Colleagues, Thank you for joining us at the 33rd COBIS Annual Conference. On behalf of the dedicated COBIS Board and the wonderfully talented team at COBIS Head Office, a warm COBIS welcome to you all! Our theme this year of ‘Making an Impact – Leading Excellence in British International Education’ is a concept which you and your colleagues put into practice on a daily basis. This is a theme which resonates with us all, regardless of school size, phase or location. Placing the aspirations and needs of the diverse community of students, parents and staff which we all represent first, our conference learning programme provides a stimulating choice of plenary sessions, panel discussions and seminars. We hope you share our belief that the interests of high quality British schools overseas (BSOs), be they COBIS members or non-members, are addressed in the programme. Key areas that will be explored over the next three days include: • • • • •

The impact of excellent leadership in BSOs An international perspective on changes to the UK National Curriculum Child protection and safeguarding children High performance learning, measuring performance and youth leadership BSO Inspections, exporting quality and the global growth of the BSO market

We are delighted to be joined by over 400 participants throughout conference. In addition to our guests, excellent speakers, school leadership teams and governors, a warm welcome to over 60 COBIS supporting member organisations and conference sponsors which add significant value to conference by exhibiting and illustrating ways in which they too ‘Lead Excellence in British Education’. Promoting and celebrating the diversity of our members is something COBIS actively enjoys. In all our activities, COBIS works to improve membership experience and our service provision. With this in mind, conference allows us to share our exciting plans for the future. Of equal importance, conference provides the COBIS Board, our team and me with the excellent opportunity to gauge your opinion and listen to your ideas which together will help shape the strategic direction of our association. Your thoughts are always invited through informal conversation or via the interactive COBIS Development Forum which is scheduled on Monday afternoon. As you will know, for the benefit of all members, COBIS lobbying activities continue to be ambitious and active. The number of COBIS schools working towards a BSO inspection by a DfE approved inspectorate, monitored by Ofsted, continues to increase. COBIS is committed to providing support and encouragement for all schools within membership to work towards this aim. Following earlier lobbying efforts, we are pleased that a growing number of COBIS schools are supporting NQTs through their induction year. Also increasing is the British government’s recognition of BSOs and UK based commercial suppliers to international education markets. Often working in partnership with other BSO associations and lobby groups, our efforts to influence policy are ongoing. In particular, our focus on expediting the government’s introduction of the ‘State Emblem’ for BSOs and the potential for qualifying BSOs to become designated bodies offering a route to teacher training are high on our agenda. We will of course keep you posted with progress. As we enjoy conference and look to the future, it is important to reassure all members that as COBIS grows, the quality assurance of our school members will always be a top priority, as will be the level of high quality support we offer to COBIS schools. Finally, I wish you every success as you and your colleagues – for the benefit of children and young people worldwide – continue to make a positive impact by leading excellence in British international education. A Message from the Chairman Welcome to the conference! I hope that you have a thoroughly enjoyable and productive time. We have a topical, varied and up-to-date programme from which to choose, and I know how valuable it is not only to refresh professional knowledge, but also to debate current issues with co-professionals who share your ambitions and challenges. There’s also ample time to meet many of our commercial supporting members exhibiting their excellent services and products. And, of course, time to extend your professional networks and to catch up with friends. This conference reflects the amazing vitality of COBIS. We are consulted with increasing respect by government and other bodies. The rapid growth in our membership (now over 300 schools and commercial members) is a clear sign of appreciation; we also have over 90 new applications under consideration. And we are ever careful to insist upon quality and high standards before admitting new members. The range and quality of our services has also grown: you will have noticed the helpful webinars on current topics, easily accessible to you wherever you are based, and also the training events and conferences held in centres around the world, focussed on key topics such as leadership, the curriculum and marketing. I hope that you also appreciate the regular and clear communication with you as a member – in high-quality newsletters (“COBIS Connect”), timely bulletins and member opinion surveys. The COBIS team is stronger than ever under Colin Bell´s outstanding and energetic leadership. The last year has seen us joined by first class people: Dr Fiona Rogers leading our expanding CPD and research, Natalie Friend bringing excellent knowledge of your schools to communication and membership, and Sarah Wooldridge still skilfully leading our administration and financial affairs. We also welcome Luke Nelson as our first intern – a recent graduate of British international education who is helping us as we help him start his career. Conference Welcome A warm welcome to the 33rd COBIS Annual Conference! Our theme this year is ‘Making an Impact – Leading Excellence in British International Education’. I have heard it said many times that the Head of a school cannot have a direct impact on children’s learning. I guess it depends on how you interpret the word ‘direct’. Personally, I believe leaders of schools have a huge impact on children’s education. It may not be direct, as in teaching lessons, but we are responsible for the quality of teaching, the curriculum we offer, the ethos that is perpetuated across the school, the setting and monitoring of high standards, the vision for the school, the accommodation in which we all work…(and the list goes on.) As such, we need to check we are doing all we can, especially with our teachers, which will impact on learning. This conference has been specifically developed to help you to make a positive and productive impact in your school. We have put together an amazing programme of speakers that will not only inspire you but also hopefully leave you with ideas to think about and take back to your schools. We know that everyone likes to learn in different ways, so in addition to keynote speakers, we have a series of seminars as well as panels, which will give you a chance to discuss issues and share your views. Some seminars are led and others are ‘learning circles’ in which colleagues can discuss items that are ongoing in their schools. With 200 delegates in attendance, please make sure you network with other delegates at break times and at the social functions during the conference as well as making time to visit the exhibitors. We can sometimes can feel isolated in our positions, especially in international schools overseas, so let us use our network of fellow COBIS colleagues as well as the sessions on offer to make the best of our time together and go back to our schools enthused and willing to investigate how we can make an even greater impact.

Keynote Speaker Biographies Sir John Jones Educational Presenter, International Speaker and Author of ‘The Magic Weaving Business’ Session title: Living in a Culture of Change Where Change is Mandatory but Growth is Optional. The Good News is Leaders Make the Difference and the Bad News is Leaders Make the Difference. Sir John is one of a small, select band of educational professionals who have not only had their achievements recognised in the New Year’s Honours List (2003), but have been able to help and inspire others with their knowledge and passion. One of the most entertaining, inspiring and soughtafter speakers on the global educational stage, his achievements and reputation for straight-talking, leadership and creativity have led him to be invited on to a number of panels and think-tanks. When Headteacher of three secondary schools over a period of 17 years, he was asked to join the Government’s Policy Action Team for Neighbourhood Renewal at the Social Exclusion Unit. He was also a member of the Headteachers’ National Focus Group on Truancy and Exclusion and the Excellence in Cities Project at the DfES. Sir John was part of the National Remodelling Team and the Leadership and Development Unit sponsored by the National College for School Leadership. Working part-time at the Centre for Educational Leadership at Manchester University, he presented on a range of programmes as well as designing and delivering a Master’s Course at Liverpool University focused on the leadership of change. A Non-Executive Director on the board of Aintree Hospitals Trust, he was also a Governor of two schools on Merseyside. Sir John has written two books; Truancy and exclusion: a teacher’s guide and the best-selling The MagicWeaving Business and has co-authored Winning the H Factor: the secrets of happy schools. He enjoys travelling, keeping fit, the theatre, golf, walking in the mountains and good food and wine. In his past he has played football semi-professionally and earned his living as a singer/guitarist in a rock duo! He is a season ticket holder for his beloved Everton and feels privileged to be Chair of the Board of ‘Everton in the Community’ and a Governor at The Everton Free School. John is also proud to be the Chancellor of Sefton’s Children’s University. Jeremy Sutcliffe Education Journalist and Author Session title: 8 Qualities of Successful School Leaders: The Desert Island Challenge Jeremy Sutcliffe is the author of 8 Qualities of Successful School Leaders: The Desert Island Challenge (Bloomsbury, 2013). He is an education journalist and former associate editor of The Times Educational Supplement. For more than a decade he edited The TES’s comment and school leadership sections and worked with leading educational commentators such as Mike Kent, Libby Purves, Anthony Seldon, Peter Wilby and the late Ted Wragg. Since 2009 he has worked as a freelance writer, editor and communications consultant. “Imagine you were cast adrift on a desert island with a school full of children in desperate need of a great headteacher. What eight qualities would you take with you to run your desert island school?” Author and journalist Jeremy Sutcliffe issued this challenge to some of the UK’s leading headteachers and their insights about what it takes to run a successful school form the basis of his inspirational new book. In this keynote address the author identifies some of the key qualities needed for successful leadership and discusses, with examples, how great headteachers deploy them in their schools.

Professor Deborah Eyre Education Director, Nord Anglia Education Session title: High Performance Learning: Creating a Performance Culture in Schools Professor Deborah Eyre is Education Director for Nord Anglia Education and responsible for education in its 27 schools. Nord Anglia has premium international schools in 11 countries and employs 3500 staff. Deborah is internationally recognised for her research on advanced cognitive performance and has helped Nord Anglia Education’s non-selective schools to create a performance culture which now ensures that one in five students is accepted into the world’s top thirty universities. Deborah now divides her time between Hong Kong and Oxford and works globally. The former Director of the UK’s National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth (NAGTY), she has an academic home at Oxford University as well as academic links to University of Warwick, Witwatersrand University, South Africa, Oxford Brookes University and Hong Kong Institute of Education. She has served on a variety of boards nationally and internationally including TDA, The National College, Centre for Talented Youth (CTY) Baltimore, USA, Africa Gifted Foundation (AGF) and Inspiring Futures (IF). An established academic writer and leading influencer, she is equally at home writing policy papers such as ‘Room at the Top’ for think tank Policy Exchange or more practical contributions for Learning to Teach in Primary School (Routledge) and Taking Forward the Primary Curriculum (National Education Trust). This session introduces the innovative High Performance Learning (HPL) philosophy and framework. Based on the belief that most students are capable of reaching high levels of educational performance, the High Performance Learning framework brings together what we know about how the most successful students think and learn and applies it systematically to drive the culture and methodology of the school. This approach is the underpinning philosophy in Nord Anglia Education’s non-selective international schools, where most students are not native language speakers and it has produced some startling results. The session will cover mind-set, key components and leave time for questions and answers. Nick Brummitt, Chairman The International School Consultancy Group Session title: Annual Update on Growth and Developments in the International Schools Market This presentation will remind delegates about how dramatically the international schools market has grown, give an update on developments over the last year, look at the British section of the market together with figures for COBIS member schools, and present the latest ISC Research forecasts for global market growth. Nick Brummitt is Chairman of The International School Consultancy Group. He started working with international schools in 1978, founded The International School Consultancy in 1994, ISC Research in 2005, ISC Worldwide in 2007 and ISC Consultancy in 2011. ISC supplies data at several levels including demographic studies and market intelligence reports covering key locations for schools and other organisations looking to expand or open new sites. ISC has offices and research teams in Oxfordshire and Asia, visits hundreds of international schools each year, and has data and research agreements with all major international schools associations.

Emily Ashwell, Managing Director, UKTI Education Graham Able, Chairman, ExEd UK Fiona Johnston, Head of International Strategy, UCAS Session title: Exporting Quality Emily Ashwell joined UKTI Education as Managing Director in August 2013. Before joining UKTI Education, Emily was a director at corporate finance adviser Canaccord Genuity (formerly Hawkpoint Partners) focussing on education and media. UKTI Education – a joint initiative between the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and UK Trade & Investment – was set up to help UK education & training organisations take advantage of high value education opportunities overseas, capitalising on the growth of demand for UK education from abroad. Graham Able was headhunted to take over as CEO of the Alpha Plus Group two months after he retired as Master of Dulwich College in 2009 after 40 years in independent schools, the last 21 of which was spent in Headships. Prior to his nearly 13 year tenure at Dulwich College, Mr Able was Head of Hampton School. He has been closely involved in the independent sector in London for over twenty-five years. Mr Able is a former chairman of The Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC) which represents the Heads of over 250 of the leading independent schools in the United Kingdom. He also chaired the HMC/ Girls’ Schools Association (GSA) joint academic policy committee and was President of the International Boys School Coalition for three years until July 2009 (the first non-American to hold this post). During his Mastership at Dulwich, he was responsible for the development of the Dulwich schools in China and remains Senior Vice-President of Dulwich College Management International. Most recently he has cofounded the lobbying group, Exporting Education (UK), which he currently chairs. Fiona Johnston is the new Head of International Strategy at UCAS. She joined UCAS from Coventry University’s International Office and has been working in the HE sector for over ten years. During that time, Fiona has worked across West Africa, Europe, Central Asia & Russia and South, East and South-East Asia. Whilst at Coventry University, Fiona set up and ran an offshore admissions office in Chennai and set up an overseas office in Pakistan. Latterly, she was responsible for Coventry University’s engagement with sponsorship bodies in the Middle East and also looked after their key private sector partners based in the UK. Professor Dylan Wiliam Emeritus Professor of Educational Assessment at the Institute of Education, University of London Session title: Principled Curriculum Design Dylan Wiliam is Emeritus Professor of Educational Assessment at the Institute of Education, University of London where, from 2006 to 2010 he was its Deputy Director. In a varied career, he has taught in urban public schools, directed a large-scale testing programme, served a number of roles in university administration, including Dean of a School of Education, and pursued a research programme focused on supporting teachers to develop their use of assessment in support of learning. What is needed is an approach to curriculum development that is “loose” enough to be applied differently in different schools, but still “tight” enough to be more than just the “pet topics” of those in charge – in other words, a principled approach to curriculum design. In this keynote lecture, he will present seven principles that, from reviews of the best curricula worldwide, would appear to be particularly useful for schools to use as “audit tools” for examining the curriculum.

All these questions will be considered and participants will finish the workshop with a set of tools and techniques and plenty of proven, practical ideas that work! Karen is a successful programme designer, facilitator and coach specialising in leadership. Her programmes are engaging and practical, focusing on learning and impact. Currently Karen is working with the United Nations to design and implement a leadership programme for 700 school principals in the Near East. She works extensively with the National College International Business Unit on projects, Ministries of Education in UAE, KSA and India, Ningbo University, China, and designs programmes for international school principals and leaders of ICT. COBIS has successfully run her Middle Leadership programme in Spain, France, Czech Republic, Japan and Egypt. Raising Awareness of Child Protection Issues and Training Opportunities Robin Watts, Training Consultant, Kidscape The importance of safeguarding in international settings will be discussed, highlighting the dangers for children and schools where safeguarding is not taken seriously. This session will examine how a safe culture and infrastructure can be created by attention to issues such as staff behaviour around children, the role of the staff and the ‘Designated Person’ and safer recruitment. Experience and good practice will be discussed from an international perspective addressing some of the difficult issues faced by international schools. Robin Watts has spent over 30 years as a Detective in the Metropolitan Police. In the last 10 years of service he worked in child protection investigation and as a child abuse investigation trainer, creating courses and training Social Workers and Police. Since retiring from the police, he has trained numerous agencies and organisations in many subject matters within the child abuse arena. Robin now is a consultant/trainer and delivers training to schools both in the UK and Worldwide. He also advises and advocates in the child protection field. He assists schools worldwide to achieve Outstanding in the Safeguarding arena. What is it that makes British International Schools ‘British’? Scary Beasts – Why Risk and Nature are Essential Components in the Pursuit of Educational Excellence Dr Richard Lawes, Co-Director, Firetrail Events and Mandy Tulloch, Founder/Principal, Mud Pies How can experiencing risk in the outdoor environment make pupils better learners? Richard will explain concepts of risk including: why we all need it; the importance of ‘flow’; experiences of pain and injury; improvements in childhood safety through risk; and how to teach responsible lifelong risk taking as a path to excellence. How does nature promote educational excellence? Mandy will outline how understanding and experiencing nature is essential to: learning across the curriculum; culinary and artistic appreciation; participation in cutting edge research and technology; the preservation of our natural resources; and concepts of resilience, downtime and recuperation. Dr. Richard Lawes is the co-director of Firetrail Events – a company that delivers specialist outdoor education and team-building consultancy to international schools, as well as organising large-scale adventure races across Scotland. Richard works within the Senior Management Team of Aberdeen City Council’s outdoor education department. As well as creating and delivering multi-activity residential experiences for large groups of primary age children, his other key roles include one-to-one outdoor work with SEBN (special educational behavioural needs) and ASN (additional support needs) pupils and the delivery of early years training to nurseries across the city, often in partnership with Mandy Tulloch. Mandy Tulloch is Founder and Principal of the award-winning education business Mud Pies. She runs weekly outdoor classes for two- to five-year-olds and their adults to discover nature and to play and explore in woods in Aberdeen City and Shire. Mandy also works with schools as an early years trainer for the Scottish schools charity Grounds For Learning. She is particularly interested in all children having daily access to the outdoors allowing them time to find out about themselves and the world around them through climbing, digging and mud pie making! Successful Strategy and Planning for Success – The Role of Governors Gillian duCharme and Jonathan Watts The role of Governors in independent schools is changing. While ‘support, scrutiny and strategy’ remain key features, Governors now have greater responsibility than ever for the success of a school. No longer is it just a matter of appointing the Head and controlling finance, crucial those these tasks are: greater understanding and involvement are now essential. However, little time and attention is given to Governors’ training, a board chair often works in isolation and Governors often feel semi-detached from their school. This session will present some of the issues international school Governors face and discuss how and where to find solutions. Issues might include the makeup of the Governing Body and board committees, Head/Governor relationships, recruitment, coaching and mentoring, strategic planning, marketing and PR. [Governors’ Stream] Gillian duCharme has been a Head of French, Registrar and Division Head, and was Head of a school in Manhattan then in the UK at Benenden School. She is a school Governor and works in a small consulting group on head recruitment and governance issues. She has worked on assignments in Hong Kong, Bermuda, Taiwan, Turkey and Azerbaijan. Jonathan Watts recently retired after 25 years as Head of History and Politics at Benenden where he was also a Housemaster, Scholars’ Mentor, Oxbridge Coordinator and responsible for international students. He has broad experience of teaching and management in independent education and is also a Governor of two schools.

Changing Cultures by Changing Spaces Gareth Long, Director, the-learning-crowd Many schools are considering the design of new buildings or extending / remodelling existing facilities. Others are reviewing the layout of classrooms to meet the needs of ever changing learning styles. This seminar will explore some of the current trends of school design, exploring a range of specific cases studies from the UK and abroad, ranging from innovative designs, changes in teaching styles and the impact on design, through to sharing some of the mistakes that people have made. This is an interactive session and an opportunity for delegates to share ideas for learning spaces from their own schools. Gareth Long has undertaken a wide range of roles in education, including that of ‘trouble shooting’ secondary Headteacher, successfully taking over a number of failing schools. He was Senior Education Advisor to the Minister of Education of the Cayman Islands for over three years, as well as acting as Chief Education Officer during a period of transition. Gareth set up ‘the-learning-crowd’ consultancy several years ago. Although the company covers many aspects of education, Gareth specialises in the design of learning spaces. He works with schools, international school groups, architects, contractors, districts, and Governments in the UK and abroad. During the days of ‘Building Schools of the Future’ he was consultant Head of Education for the UK’s largest construction company. A recent scheme for which he wrote the Education Design Brief was recognised as Project of the Year (£5m - £50m) in the 2013 British Construction Industry Annual Awards. Enhancing Your Teachers’ Professional, Reflective Practice – Teachers’ Standards in Practice Dr Lorna Goodwin, Academic Director and Mrs Paula Askew, Ambassador for Enterprise and CPD, St Mary’s University Research reflects the importance of developing teachers who are continually critically self-reflective and evaluate their own practice. Using a standards-based model as the basis for professional development activities secures this ongoing development of teachers’ own practice at all career stages. Dr Lorna Goodwin is the Academic Director for Enterprise and Development in the School of Education, Theology and Leadership at St Mary’s University, Twickenham. As London’s outstanding provider of Initial Teacher Education at both Primary and Secondary phases, St Mary’s has a long history of providing beginning and ongoing CPD for teachers. This highly interactive session will examine what really lies behind school brands, how schools try (and usually fail) to differentiate themselves in increasingly crowded markets, and how ‘soft power’ is working both for international schools and against them. Alongside his role with Keele, Denry is also conducting Doctoral research on The Corporatisation of International Schooling and, as well as the publication of six Business texts and numerous articles, has published academic work on the changing role of the Principal in for-profit international schools. Formerly Head of Upper School with Harrow International School (Bangkok) and now holding a role that sees him assisting with the development of Harrow’s portfolio in Asia, Denry is an experienced international educator. Denry’s background in business, having previously worked in management with Marks & Spencer, combined with his educational experience and academic interests give him a unique insight into the dynamic world of international schooling. Monday 12 May Morning Seminars Identifying Potential and Measuring Impact David Paton, Head and James Lyng, Assistant Head and Teacher of Physics, Radnor House Since opening in 2011, Radnor House has had high aspirations for its pupils from the moment they join the school. The school’s approach is to identify each child’s potential right from the start so that staff can set ambitious targets, monitor progress and measure the impact of their teaching. Using reasoning tests such as the Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT), Radnor House builds a complete picture of each pupil and class by forming a better understanding of their learning preferences, strengths and needs, thus enabling teachers to add value to every single child. Before joining Makewaves in 2004, Sharon was an Associate Producer of factual documentaries for an independent television production company and also produced a series of programmes for Yorkshire Television working with young people aged 14 to 24. Afternoon Seminars British Schools Overseas (BSO) Inspections Panel Discussion chaired by Jennifer Bray, Inspections and Quality Officer, COBIS In order to be an Accredited COBIS Member, and to be recognised by the UK Department for Education (DfE), a British school overseas (BSO) must have a successful inspection, against agreed standards, by one of the DfE approved inspectorates. This session will provide an overview of the BSO inspection system and standards, with panellists sharing their experiences of recent inspections carried out by different inspectorates. Dylan Wiliam is Emeritus Professor of Educational Assessment at the Institute of Education, University of London where, from 2006 to 2010, he was its Deputy Director. In a varied career, he has taught in urban public schools, directed a large-scale testing programme, served a number of roles in university administration, including Dean of a School of Education, and pursued a research programme focused on supporting teachers to develop their use of assessment in support of learning. Making the Most of Support Staff Panel Discussion chaired by Dr Estelle Tarry, Senior Lecturer, University of Northampton There is a need for Head Teachers to be aware of the importance of the role and deployment of Teaching Assistants (TAs) in their schools. Head Teachers need to ensure that TAs receive relevant training and support for relevant qualifications. This panel will look at how schools are making best use of their support staff and explore options for supporting their training and development. Integrating New Technology in Schools – Strategy and Implications David Hellier, Director of e-Learning, The British School in the Netherlands This workshop will explore the implications and challenges of introducing and integrating new technologies in schools for staff, parents, pupils and the school community. It will examine the issues surrounding vision and leadership as well as planning for large-scale deployments, financing and funding of such deployments, IT infrastructure, pedagogy, professional development, challenges and measuring the success of new technologies. The workshop will aim to give practical advice to school leaders on the integration of technology into schools. David Hellier has been the Director of e-Learning at The British School in The Netherlands since April 2010. He is currently project-managing the roll-out of a 1 to 1 iPad programme for all students from Year 6 upwards. So far the school has distributed and set up over 1,000 iPads, including well over 100 for teachers. David is interested in looking for ways to use technology to enhance teaching and learning and thereby raise standards. This includes helping teachers to feel empowered to be able to use the technology in a meaningful and engaging way in the classroom. COBIS Student Competitions, Awards and Activities COBIS is continuing to do more to engage with students and their families through a range of student competitions, awards and activities. COBIS World Debate Championships 8-9 February 2014 – The British School in The Netherlands It was a double win for The British School in The Netherlands at the COBIS World Debate competition. The host school won both the Cup and the Plate in a competition that was fiercely contested by teams from 13 COBIS schools representing 11 countries. Second place was awarded to the British School of Bucharest and Dubai College was in third place. The judges were very impressed with the standard of the debates. As well as competing in the event, COBIS students had the chance to get to know each other thanks to a social programme coordinated by the BSN. The event has encouraged global friendships with many students returning again this year after last year’s inaugural event hosted by the Prague British School. Congratulations to all students who participated and we look forward to the next COBIS World Debate competition. COBIS Primary Creative Challenge – ‘It’s Our World - Celebrating Where We Live!’ October – December 2013 The inaugural COBIS Primary Creative Challenge was an opportunity for students at COBIS schools to create films celebrating where they live. Congratulations to all the classes who took part, and to the winners – Regent School in Nigeria, the British School of Sofia in Bulgaria, Haileybury Astana in Kazakhstan and the British International School Shanghai in China – and to the runners-up. All winners received a free full school subscription to Oddizzi.com along with a set of Lonely Planet children’s books. All classes who took part will receive a free subscription to Oddizzi for their class and a set of classroom resources from Lonely Planet. All the videos are now hosted on the COBIS YouTube channel and on the COBIS website. They are well worth a look! COBIS Primary and Secondary Games Primary Games: 30 May – 1 June 2014 – The British School Al Khubairat, Abu Dhabi, UAE Secondary Games: 15-17 May 2014 – The British International School Istanbul, Turkey 2014 sees the launch of the COBIS Secondary Games with 12 schools competing over three days in athletics, football and swimming. Participating students will also have the opportunity to explore the beautiful city of Istanbul with new found friends from other COBIS schools. The third COBIS Primary Games will be hosted by the 2013 winners, The British School Al Khubairat. 15 COBIS schools will bring teams from Years 5-6 to compete in basketball, football and swimming. COBIS Professional Development 2013/14 has been a busy year for COBIS CPD, with conferences and events for Teachers, TAs, Heads, Governors, Senior Leaders, Middle Leaders, and Marketing, Development and Admissions Staff. In addition to catering for more members of the school workforce, the geographic spread of COBIS CPD events has also increased with courses and conferences taking place in Spain, Czech Republic, Japan, Romania, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Belgium and the UK. With COBIS Schools in 60 countries worldwide, we are increasingly looking at online and e-learning opportunities to help schools to maximise their CPD budgets and allow more members of the COBIS community to take advantage of CPD opportunities. To that end, this year has seen the first COBIS webinars, attended by more than 400 representatives from COBIS schools around the world. Topics have ranged from Social Media for Schools, to an Introduction to COBIS Membership, to SEN Provision, to Best Practice Use of Standardised Assessment. COBIS Research For many years, COBIS has undertaken annual research with member schools about examination results and university destinations as well as other ad hoc research projects. This has been a useful exercise for a number of reasons, not least of which has been providing information to support and inform the lobbying work of COBIS. In 2014/15, COBIS is pleased to be launching a new research project, working in partnership with GL Education and ISC Research Ltd, which will help us to develop a better understanding of the growing global COBIS family of schools, as well as the British International Education sector as a whole. This annual research exercise will amalgamate the existing research while also looking at approaches to assessment, curriculum and extra-curricular activities, fees, sources of pupil funding, school development planning, and more. In addition to making the association more data-rich, and supporting lobbying activities, this research will also help COBIS to streamline communication and will inform planning for future CPD events to ensure that we are meeting the needs of our member schools. While COBIS is not looking to create a league table of international schools, this research project will give participating schools the opportunity to access benchmarking data (against other COBIS schools and schools in the UK) as well as tailored reports for Senior Management Teams and Governors. Participation in this research – which can be completed online through a system designed and managed by GL Education – will not be mandatory but we hope that all COBIS schools will recognise the value and opportunities presented by this project. In order to minimise the workload for COBIS schools, as much of the information as possible will be pre-populated, supported in part by data courtesy of ISC Research Ltd. In future years, schools will simply be asked to update their data from the previous year. More information about this exciting new project will be available during the conference.
