Annual Conference 2012
Welcome to the 31st COBIS Annual Conference Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the Executive Committee and the Secretariat, a warm welcome to the 31st COBIS annual conference and to London, the proud 2012 Olympic City. Once again our aim this year is to provide you with another high-impact professional development event, which we trust you will judge to be of gold medal standard! Your judging criteria can focus on our capacity to provide you with stimulating content, engaging speakers, relaxing space for self-reflection, positive learning outcomes and of course the opportunity to share each other’s quality company during convivial dinners and receptions. I am sure you will agree that this year’s theme of ‘Unity in Diversity’ captures the very essence of our proud association and our growing global network of quality schools. Joining us at conference will allow you to explore and celebrate the collective COBIS drive and determination to deliver the best life chances for children and young people worldwide. Each year as our annual conference grows, one element remains constant, that is the fact that conference benefits from the diverse knowledge and experience of delegates, speakers and exhibitors alike. Again we are delighted to be joined by a wide range of delegates, speakers and exhibiting COBIS-supporting members. Exhibitors are on hand throughout conference to offer their expertise and qualified professional advice. As always, I know you will make them feel welcome, for your benefit, we have scheduled plenty of time for you to meet exhibitors throughout conference. The strength of any unified association or school is through the active involvement of members of its community. With this in mind, myself and the Executive Committee are always keen to hear your views relating to our progress, new membership services and potential areas for development. You are welcome and encouraged to join us at the COBIS membership forum on Saturday afternoon at the start of conference - the perfect opportunity for us to consult with school representatives and to consolidate the COBIS strategic direction, which is of course designed to serve British International schools of global quality. I would like to offer a special thank you to colleagues Sarah Wooldridge and Becky Hepworth from the COBIS Secretariat who have worked hard throughout the year and who have helped tremendously with the planning and preparation of this year’s conference. In addition, sincere gratitude to all our sponsors for their generous contributions and to all exhibitors for their ongoing support. I look forward to continuing to work with you and to meeting you in person during the course of the next few days. Finally, have a wonderful time in London and enjoy participating in the 2012 COBIS annual conference ‘Unity in Diversity’, which by now is successfully out of the blocks and running! Annual Conference 2012
A message from the Chairman Dear Colleagues, I hope that you find this conference full of opportunity: for stimulating, expert input, for professional reflection, and above all for supportive networking. The programme – thanks to Vice-Chairman Steffen Sommer and to Executive Director Colin Bell – offers both high quality and also choice. COBIS continues to take major strides, and this conference for leaders and governors is one of many successful conferences, training courses and events for leaders, teachers and students across the year. We have this year paid particular attention to members’ views on all aspects of our direction. Detailed feedback from last year’s Members’ Forum is reflected in our updated Development Plan - all shared with you by email. Our membership continues to grow, while quality is carefully preserved. Our public image has a modern facelift, and our interactive website has improved member communication. Several new services - mentoring, consultancy and a talent pool - are being made available to you. My sincere thanks go, on your behalf, to Colin and his excellent new team, now serving your central office so professionally. And of course to your elected Executive Committee, who throughout the year so freely give their experience and time. Enjoy the conference! With my best wishes,
Trevor Rowell Chairman
Conference Welcome Dear Colleagues, I am exceptionally pleased to welcome you, on behalf of the COBIS Executive Committee, to our 31st Annual Conference. ‘Unity in Diversity’ being our theme, we focus on our common philosophy and spirit, taking account of the inevitable differences that characterise our schools owing to geographical locations and the systems we are operating. The understanding that we follow similar objectives in the interest of many thousands of students’ learning, and the professional development of our staff and governors, provides a befitting backdrop for the cohort of high-calibre speakers who have kindly agreed to share their thoughts with us. You will be kept abreast of current educational thinking, both in the UK and internationally, and be exhilarated by forward looking, inspirational speakers. Both sectors, primary and secondary, will be catered for with keynote speakers and seminars in which you can actively participate. Not only is the conference about learning but also, and most importantly, about sharing. Let me wish you a successful conference and an enjoyable four days in London.

Professor Jeff Thompson, Emeritus of Education, University of Bath and Dr Mary Hayden, Senior Lecturer in Education, University of Bath Seminar Title: International Schooling: Past Perfect, Future Tense? The keynote address will begin with a brief reflection on the origins of international schools, considering some of the antecedents to the present day situation of rapid growth, development and diversification. Discussion of a number of current issues affecting and arising from international schools will include consideration of some recent trends in the sector, as it responds to changes in the global environment. Speculation will follow as to how these trends might lead to a number of possible scenarios for the development of international schools in the future. Professor Jeff Thompson teaches, supervises, researches and publishes through the CEIC at the University of Bath in areas relating specifically to international schools and international education. Since its inception he has worked closely with the International Baccalaureate, having held posts, inter alia, of Chair of the IB Diploma Examining Board, Director of Research, and Academic Director. Annual Conference 2012
Martin Skelton Founding Director, International Primary Curriculum Seminar Title: Unity in Diversity. Probably the best conference title in the world... My apologies to Carlsberg but, truly, if any conference title summed up what we have been trying to do for the past twenty or so years in our work in Fieldwork, the WCL Group and our curriculums then ‘Unity in Diversity’ is it. So, grateful for having been invited to speak, I want to use the time together to explore two or three themes that seem to me to exemplify just why this conference title is so apposite. For the past few years my own interests have focused around international mindedness, learning and how we organise classrooms and schools to achieve both. As there are good people (friends, even) already talking to us about international mindedness I am choosing to spend my 45 minutes talking about learning. At the time of writing (which is an indication that things might change) I would like to focus on learning and the factors that affect learning, the diversity of knowledge, skills and understanding and the unity that results from all three and how a 21st century mind is one that requires themes and subjects at the same time. I look forward to being with you and to learning from you, too. Isn’t that what ‘Unity in Diversity’ is also about? Martin Skelton’s first twenty years or so in education were spent in classrooms and in schools as a teacher and Principal. Since then, Martin has worked with thousands of teachers, administrators and schools around the world. For the past 15 years, he has been immersed in brain research and its implications for learning and classroom practice. Martin designed and was Founding Director of the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and continues to be closely involved in its development. The IPC is now in use in more than 1400 schools around the world. He is currently working with Emily Porter, who is leading the development of a companion International Middle Years Curriculum, due to be completed by June 2012. Martin also designed the Looking for Learning protocol which is being used by an increasing number of schools in the UK and elsewhere. Martin currently works with the nine schools of the WCL Group in the US, Spain and Qatar and with other schools and projects in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, China, Cambodia and elsewhere. Martin is passionate about international education. He was one of the group that founded the Alliance for International Education and led the curriculum and assessment strands at the first three Alliance conferences in Geneva, Düsseldorf and Shanghai. He has contributed to various books and publications including a recent chapter on the links between brain research and the development of international mindedness. Martin was co-founder of primary file publishing, designed to provide teachers and administrators with insights into teaching, learning, school management and leadership in a way that was ‘practical, accessible and jargon-free’. He hopes his presentation will meet those same criteria. Michael Davidson Senior Analyst in the Directorate for Education of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Seminar Title: Strong performers and successful reformers in education – what we can learn from the world’s best Michael Davidson is a Senior Analyst in the Directorate for Education of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), based in Paris. Currently acting head of the Early Childhood and Schools Division, he has responsible for the project management of the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) programme and for overseeing thematic policy on early childhood and school education. Before joining the OECD in 2003, he worked as a statistician for over 20 years in the UK Civil Service. Over a 10-year period in the education ministry, he was responsible for the production, analysis and dissemination of statistics on all phases of education from pre-primary through to higher education. In addition, he spent two years seconded to a local authority working as head of the school planning and schools information services, supporting local school improvement.
