Massey’s College of Creative Arts is based in Wellington, New Zealand’s creative capital. Many of our most illustrious artists and designers began their careers here, and our alumni can be found working at the peak of their professions around the world. The College houses New Zealand’s oldest, largest and internationally ranked School of Design – Nga- Pae Ma-hutonga (est. 1886) and School of Art – Whiti o Rehua. It provides world class teaching, learning and research in a wide range of creative disciplines from photography to product design. An exciting addition for the College this year is the new School of Music and Creative Media Production. The School is currently developing degrees in commercial music and creative media production for delivery in 2015, so watch this space! It is my great pleasure to introduce you to the annual publication of Massey University’s College of Creative Arts, showcasing the work of our fine arts and design degree graduates. They join a phenomenal group of graduates from a College which is celebrating its 128th year in 2014. In our Hall of Fame are eminent New Zealanders past and present, such as fashion designers Kate Sylvester and Collette Dinnigan, artists Len Lye and Gordon Walters, designers Danny Coster of Apple and Matt Holmes of Nike, and Weta Workshop’s Sir Richard Taylor. One day one or more of the graduates of 2013 may be amongst this group.

ANNA BROWN Director – Open Lab Senior Lecturer Nga- Pae Ma-hutonga – The School of Design

We are pleased to share with you some of the successes of our graduating students and showcase their work with Open Lab in 2013. Open Lab is an enterprise design studio within the College of Creative Arts where experienced design professionals, academics and student designers collaborate to solve organisational and business problems. In June of 2014 Open Lab will celebrate its third birthday. We have grown from a pilot ‘design camp’ hastily assembled in a makeshift office during semester break, to a full-time operation with core staff operating in a world class facility with a growing reputation for innovative solutions. In the past year we have: completed over 120 projects of various size, scope and makeup; employed over 90 students and recent graduates to help us deliver design projects; built relationships with institutions and people in the industrial, public, cultural and social sectors. As a studio Open Lab’s vision is three-fold: Collaborative: to bring students, graduates, academic staff and clients together to work on both traditional and unconventional design projects. Transformative: to highlight the capabilities of design thinking to develop or transform organisations and businesses.

Experiential: to give a real world learning experience to students and to provide a bridging mechanism for graduates to enter the workforce with improved skills in all areas of design. Our aspiration is to be the vanguard of the design-led revolution. This means valuing design and the contribution it can make to society; being curious, building a strong design culture and being open to new ideas and uncertainty; ensuring designers have input in strategic planning, breaking down departmental boundaries and bringing together people with wildly different skill-sets and perspectives; talking to people, the users, when creating for and with them; allowing mistakes to be made in safe environments, encouraging prototyping and an evolving process of discovery. The following pages show a small selection of the achievements of the graduating students of 2013 who worked on Open Lab projects in parallel to their degrees. www.openlab.ac.nz

THE WELLINGTON JAZZ FESTIVAL

The Open Lab team worked to re-name, strategise, design and deliver a user-centred web tool alongside the partner organisations (all Local Government bodies in New Zealand, the Cawthron Institute, Ministry for the Environment and the Tindall Foundation) in this ground breaking project. One of LAWA’s key objectives — to interpret and visualise complex scientific data — was enabled through a design-led process.

The Wellington Jazz Festival is a weekend-long biennial event attracting some of the world’s greatest Jazz performers to the capital. The festival identity needed a new energy and spontaneity to better reflect the artistic, bohemian and free-spirited Cuba Quarter where the event is held. Looking to old Blue Note record covers of the past, the bespoke hand-rendered system lets the identity sit somewhere between gig/club flyer and polished arts festival aesthetic.

EXPOSURE A group of honours students worked in collaboration with Open Lab on the delivery of the wayshowing design and audience engagement for the 2013 Exposure graduate exhibition. This student-led project deepened the involvement of their cohort with the event and made connections with local businesses. Despite a challenging brief and tight timeframes the enthusiasm of the students carried the project to a successful completion. ST KILDA SAINTS ANZAC DAY GUERNSEY

POP EVENT

Open Lab was engaged to design a bespoke Anzac Day guernsey to be worn by the Saints players in the second annual AFL match played at Westpac Stadium on the 25 April 2014. The contemporary Ma-ori design emphasises the links between New Zealand and Australia through the Anzac journey and involved exploring symbolic meaning from a number of relevant Ma-ori myths.

POP, a student-led project in collaboration with Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, brought together a team of eight students from the School of Design and the New Zealand School of Music. The students worked alongside Te Papa’s Audience Engagement team to design and implement an experiential evening event to engage 18–30 year olds in the Warhol: Immortal exhibition of 2013.

It is with great pride that we share this sampling of our fine art and photography graduates’ work with you. The culmination of University study is a momentous event, and as thinking shifts towards the future, new aspirations and goals come into focus. Our fine arts and photography graduates are inventive, creative, dedicated, resilient thinkers and makers. They want to change the world through their work – whether through establishing themselves as practicing artists, starting their own businesses, or working with others in connected industries; museums and galleries, education, film and television, libraries and archives, to name a few. Art is fundamental to the way we see, experience and understand the world. The prominence of art and photography in our everyday lives is becoming more evident and in Aotearoa New Zealand there is a strong undercurrent of creative practice. As a community we can be even more active and visible in supporting and celebrating of our artists. The richness of our culture relies on the fostering of artists, curators, writers, designers, producers and critics to do great work and to share it within the country

and on the international stage. At the College of Creative Arts we encourage creative ambition, criticality, independence of thought and action, mixed in with a healthy strand of pragmatism. We want all our graduates to succeed in their chosen field and, along with their whanau and friends, we are immensely proud to celebrate their achievements. Whiti o Rehua – The School of Art offers exciting opportunities for discipline-specific and interdisciplinary work, across fields of making, critical analysis and response. Pathways include contemporary art (across all media and processes), photography, art and design histories, matauranga Ma-ori, visual culture, material culture, exhibition making and critical writing. In 2015 we will be further enriched by a closer working relationship with Toioho ki Apiti Ma-ori Visual Arts programme based on Massey University’s Palmerston North campus.

My images use this mystery to inspire fascination and a connection with living things; this is necessary if we are to regard and include them in the future our kind now controls. NOTHING I & NOTHING IV The research and practical approaches that I have become exposed to in the course of this degree have lead me to question the nature of space and absence in photographic work. This inspired me to create a photographic series that represents the concept of nothing. This body of work comes out of a desire to possess an understanding of how one executes and portrays nothing through photography.

TUAKIRI The series of Ta Moko portraits create a Ma-ori cultural identity with permanent markings on the body. This is a form of communication to express one’s Whakapapa.

REINVENTING A SCULPTURAL LANDSCAPE This work examines the way New Zealand landscapes are being increasingly shaped and manipulated through human influence. As tourism pushes to be the country’s top economic income generator, a need to compensate for the volume of incoming tourists has been applied to the land. The structured nature of the images developed by adhering photographs onto physically manipulated sheet metal shows a direct relationship to the treatment we give the land.

THE SEVEN SINS Throughout the series I navigate between the real and constructed. The Seven Sins drive a narrative, creating a flow between each photograph. Every photo is inspired by a sin personal to the individual pictured.

At the time it was good sport and current fashion to take your favourite abstract classics and spoil them with a figure smack-dab in the middle. We all churned them out together in the dozens. This is another otherwise innocuously beautiful image thwarted with self-reflexive meditation and spatial rendering. To make matters worse the figure is of the legend himself stewing in his own legacy. He would have hated it."

Creation leaves a legacy that inspires the same creative cycle to repeat itself. Without this cycle, we are not living, we are merely surviving. In today’s technological world, the organic essence of life experience seems to be vanishing virtually before our eyes. Life is not meant to be experienced vicariously. DOWN POUR BLUE (watercolour on paper) My practice explores the mediums of paint and paper. The conceptual basis for Down Pour Blue acknowledges the history of watercolour painting and abstraction, and the relationship painting has with the body and space.

ADRIFT IN THE BLUE LAGOON A short story and drawings inspired by a drive from Wellington to Palmerston North. Its characters were designed by transplanting New Zealand and its people into an animal themed fable universe.

SPLAT! My work contains sculptures painted with wax to look beautiful but disturbing. The sculptures are presented in an environment reminiscent of a film or theatre.

COMPOSITION My work explores the concept of control, order and balance through systematic and geometric abstract patterns, grids, forms and colour arrangements, expressed using the medium of drawing and painting.

BALANCING ACT (TV, ladder, straps & DVD) A sense of quiet melancholia and hopeless romanticism folds into my films. If there is humour, it is most likely self-deprecating; an aspect of loneliness or the looming fear of failure. I see my performances as vulnerable gestures, mostly ‘embarrassing’ and unlikely culprits for ‘performance art’, attached to some test of endurance or metaphorical power. Perhaps this is a different type of endurance, a test of failure, or the fear of possible embarrassment. Underneath the slapstick exterior lays a deeper interior, an artist struggling with aspects of his own existence.

RODNEY ADANK Head of School Nga- Pae Ma-hutonga – The School of Design

It is with great joy that we share a sampling of our fabulous graduates from the School of Design 2013 graduating year. The work catalogued demonstrates the quality and contribution that a creative education provides. It showcases new concepts, approaches and untrammelled visions of a better, more sympathetic world. Breaking new ground is the consequence of outstanding practice-based design research. This approach expands our understanding allowing us to envision a range of different nuanced experiences and consequently develop value propositions to drive innovation. These graduates of New Zealand’s leading design school have majored in areas of visual communication, fashion, industrial, textiles and spatial design. IGNARUS STRATIS Unconscious defences and hypnosis drove this collection. Features include accessories, a mirrored psychology inspired digital print, and laser cutting incorporated in structural designs to give feelings of strength and protection.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world in which the land is wasted and resources have dried up, the collection brings to life a character living within the bleak future. RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION This project investigated consumption and production, the implications and how we might use waste products to produce everyday items. The Coffee Cup Machine transforms waste coffee grounds into disposable coffee cups. It explores alternative manufacturing methods that create responsible, sustainable products, and is intended to be used in cafes, where the waste is produced. The coffee grounds’ composite material was also developed as part of the project.

ACENSUS – ARTHRITIS LEG ASSIST (EXO SKELETON) Acensus is an exo-skeleton for arthritis sufferers. It restores independence and ease of movement in everyday life. Muscle sensors and a motorised unit assist movement whilst Thermoskin technology reduces joint pain.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR REBECCA SINCLAIR Director – Academic

Postgraduate study in art or design is not for the faint hearted. It takes a special kind of student to either continue after four years of undergraduate education, or return after a period of time in the workforce to be immersed in the intense and demanding journey of creative research. Postgraduate students often have families to support, comfortable incomes to forgo, personal hurdles to overcome in the pursuit of a higher degree. The designers and artists shown in the following pages have passion, guts and determination, combined with intellect, expertise and amazing creativity that have enabled them to push boundaries and take art and design into new territories. Our postgraduate students have been immersed in a hotbed of creativity on the top floor of our beautiful building, Te Ara Hihiko, looking out over the city. They have been experimenting, testing, making, thinking, discussing, arguing, critiquing, analysing, producing. They have been taking risks, and taking us along with them in their adventurous and unique research projects that challenge art and design to do something profound, suggesting ways of seeing and experiencing the world never conceived of before. Covering a spectrum of ideas via a stunning array of forms and modes, they demonstrate acute thinking at the very forefront of contemporary art and design practice.

Our two-year MFA (Fine Art or Design) brings together artists and designers to work both within and across an exciting array of creative media. The degree prefaces experimentation and risk taking with adventurous ideas and material investigations that traverse the shared possibilities of art and design. Our one-year MDes has a dynamic applied focus with strong links to industry through design research projects. MDes graduates have produced highly innovative and expertly realised design work contributing to research-driven innovation for their industry partners and foregrounding the vital role design has in economic growth and social well-being. 01 NILS BLUM VENTUS - AN EVERYDAY LIGHTWEIGHT SPORTS CAR FOR THE NEXT GENERATION This project focuses on a new kind of sports car that caters for a new sustainable trend in society and the car industry. The project aim was to develop a “(sustainable) everyday lightweight sports car� for the medium/high price bracket. This car would fill the gap for the person who would like to enjoy sportive driving on the weekends, but also wants to use the car

on a daily basis in a fuel-saving manner. The car is constructed out of natural lightweight composite fibres in conjunction with a modern carbon fibre monocoque design. As a spatial designer I engage in the realms of landscape architecture, architecture and design to navigate the field of space making in the landscape. The poetic

journey I have created through the wetlands traverses eight evocative, site-specific follies with the goal to encourage wine tourism. This project explores the ubiquitous quality of architecture to generate mood and atmosphere through sensitive treatment of materials and space, positioning the sensate body as an important figure in enabling unique experiences within architecture and environment.

03 TAMARA KAN TAOISM AND CREATIVE PRACTICE: THE CREATIVE PRINCIPLES OF TAOIST PHILOSOPHY AND THE PRACTICE OF ABSTRACT PAINTING This study identifies creative principles within the Taoist philosophy and examines instances where these principles have influenced historical and contemporary abstract painting practices. It also explores ways in which these principles may influence changes within a personal creative practice. The creation of painted abstract interpretations of the chapters of the I Ching provides a context for exploring the relationships between these principles and the development of a particular creative process. 289

06 KIERAN STOWERS UTOPIAN INGREDIENTS: A DINNER TIME DISCUSSION ABOUT NEW ZEALAND’S CONSTITUTIONAL PREAMBLE A constitutional preamble outlines the core tenets and characteristics that guide a society. Utopian Ingredients is a potluck dinner party toolkit that searches for robust design-led discussion about expressing New Zealand’s constitutional preamble both visually and experientially. By adapting tikanga Ma-ori engagement principles, Western dinner customs and incorporating Pasifika design elements, the unique functional quality of the toolkit is to augment national identity and explore what values should shape 21st Century New Zealand. As New Zealand’s increasingly diverse population grows, Utopian Ingredients facilitates and encourages people to ‘play with their food’ and engage with difficult and often emotionally undeclared values, while establishing multiple enduring constitutional preambles. @kieranstowers kieranstowers.co.nz

07 TIM TURNIDGE HYPERVIDEO: INTERFACE DESIGN AND MOBILE COLLABORATIVE DOCUMENTARIES Hypervideo presents an online interface for viewing the collaborative mobile documentary: 24 Frames 24 Hours. By leveraging the geo-locative capabilities of mobile devices and contemporary web technologies such as APIs, metadata and video databases, the prototype interface facilitates the viewing of videos shot on mobile devices from around the world in an interactive documentary format. The interactive form enables the dynamic configuration of documentary content influenced by Lev Manovich’s Soft Cinema project and Florian Thalhofer’s Korsakow system. t.turnidge@massey.ac.nz

08 SONYA WITHERS NAVIGATING THE VALUES OF SIAPO: THROUGH TEXTILE DESIGN, IDENTITY AND VA The start of this journey began as an enquiry into whether Siapo could be adapted or developed as a commercial product for the textile industry without the disconnection of culture and tradition. As a result of the immense responses from pasifika diaspora living in Niu Sila, a trip to Samoa and constant self-inquiry, it became more of a question of whether culture, tradition, and value were still connected with Siapo today? The use of Talanoa as a research methodology to create Va between new friends and lasting connections has provided a path in constructing each of the examples on display. The garments were designed for three males I am linked to through family and friends. We are all of Samoan Afakasi ethnicity and were born and raised in New Zealand. An aspect of their identity has been identified to that of the context of Siapo. This has directed the kind of textile processes used to produce their Siapo Ie Faitaga.

09 DAVID WOOLLEY MAKING THE INVISIBLE, VISIBLE This practice based research project explores ways of dynamically representing the invisible phenomenon of sound. The aim of the research is to make this phenomenon more accessible and understandable. My experience within the public entertainment and conference industry has resulted in personal observations that inspired the pursuit of methods revealing the invisible phenomenon of sound through a combination of audio-visual abstraction. What is of interest to me in this project is how interactive installations might engage an audience through participatory aesthetic experience, showing the science of sound through cymatics and an exploration of interplay between dimensions and meditative experiences. My approach to these questions was influenced by theorists and practitioners such as Victoria Vesna, Leo Villareal, Kit Webster, Rob Hawkes and Evan Grant.

10 ZHINQING YU MANG – THE LOSS OF EYESIGHT According to World Health Organization 2012 statistics, there are approximately 285 million visually impaired people in the world, 39 million of whom are blind. In China, the country that I come from, it is estimated that there are more than 500 million blind children. This design research project focuses on the reading needs of this audience by exploring book design for children and blind people’s ability to perceive despite their ‘loss of eye’. In it I apply haptic theory, cultural criticism, and secondary research into blind people’s sensory experience to re-purposing the visual language, format and construction of the book. Through this rethinking, and return to my cultural motifs, legends and forms, I aim to probe how tactile design can assist unsighted people read and understand text. oliviayzq@gmail.com 021 0285 1272

01 MATHEW JARRY EXPLORING NOTIONS OF HOME The sculpture and installation-based work brings together the vibrancy and visual interference of graffiti art with the architectonic simplicity of Minimalism. The use of construction materials such as pine and macrocarpa left either natural or spray-painted with fluorescent hues are leaned against the gallery wall as a marker of the site’s interior structure as a ‘home’. While the vinyl sticker installation passes through the membrane of the gallery wall to include the exterior space as another avenue in which ‘home’ can be understood. mathewjarry@yahoo.ca

02 TAM WEBSTER AT THE POOL At the Pool continues an exploration of leisure that began with the photographic survey of vacant caravans at a holiday park resulting in my exhibition Refuge In Anglesea. Current work extends this through examination of the relationships between leisure, recreation and play. On the Run removed site specificity by using mobile phones to record subjects, At the Pool examines swimmers in a similar way but I reference the relationship between artist and subject. This expands on my original work at Anglesea by focusing on the individual’s engagement with leisure; how this might contribute to establishing identity, culture and personal well-being. tamson@paradise.net.nz
