1.2 Foreign trade and port traffic

Foreign trade cargo handled in Central America during 2020 totaled 104.1 billion dollars, equivalent to 92.4 billion MT, showing a small increase of 1% in terms of value when compared with 2019 figures, while cargo volume handled suffered a drop in the same percentage. Imports accounted for 64% of the total value of foreign trade cargo, while cargo volume totaled 63%. On the other hand, exports totaled 36% of the total value of foreign trade cargo, and 37% in terms of volume. As to foreign trade cargo volume handled in the region, Guatemala moved 35%, followed by Costa Rica with 18%, Honduras by 17%, El Salvador by 13%, Panama by 9% and Nicaragua by 7%. Table No.3 shows foreign trade cargo figures in terms of volume and value, including maritime cargo volume handled in each country in the Central American region. It is worth mentioning that foreign trade cargo volumes shown on Table 3 also include air and land transportation modes; however, it does not include re-imports, free trade zone (cargo) or inward processing arrangements.

1.3 Cargo throughput handled by coast

This year the Caribbean coast handled 53% of the total cargo carried through the region, increasing by 3% when compared with the previous year. Such increase was particularly based on the 8% increase in embarked cargo. The remaining 47% of the cargo was handled through the Pacific coast, increasing by 5% when compared with 2019 figures. This increase is based on positive variances in both operations, namely disembarked cargo by 6% and embarked cargo by 5%.
