Outstanding graduates Renee Mecklenburg (left) and Safia Khan (right)
"Do you know why College of DuPage students are so hot?... They earn degrees," said Student Leadership Council President Kiley Pooler. These words came to fruition when over 500 graduates dressed in their academic regalia and walked through the aisles of the Physical Education Center (PEC) on May 19, to receive their diplomas in various disciplines.
Graduates went the extra mile and decorated their caps with words and a pictorial of the course they studied. For family and friends, it was exciting to see either a parent or child walk through the halls of the "College of Dreams." Dr. Kim Amour, a 1984 graduate of the College of DuPage, and a recipient of the honorary distinguished alumna award served
as the 50th commencement speaker. "Life is waiting for you and as you look for the next journey, walk through the door," said Amour. Safia Khan and Renee Mecklenburg (both of Lombard) were recognized as outstanding graduates for their academic achievements and service to the college and community. Congratulations to the class of 2017.

As the academic year came to an end, so did the journey of 16 international students who attended College of DuPage during the same period. From the heart of Africa, Ghana, the Dominican Republic, to the emerald of the equator, Indonesia, these students brought a lot of diversity to the college. "My experience at COD has been an amazing one," said Lucky Edefiam Abiemo (Ghana). "Even my
experience in the U.S. is the greatest exposure I've ever had so far. I'm going to miss all the friends and families I met. I miss home, but I have got this mixed feelings about my friends here, but also I'm excited to go home. This was a big eye-opener for me." This ecstatic feeling encompasses how great the journey for these students was. The Courier reached out to Susan Kerby, the

not hugely represented at COD. And, yes, COD has a really diverse community of students already, but this is just adding to that diversity of students who are completely unfamiliar with the United States.
Vandy Manyeh: COD is a really diverse institution. How did the college benefit from the diversity of these students?
VM: How has the College of DuPage been able to continue this program since 2011?
Susan Kerbey: The CCI Program, in particular, is sponsored by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs, and the students come to the college as a means of building bridges of peace around the world. So, what these students bring to COD and how COD benefits is a perspective of students who don’t know a lot about America and are willing to learn and are interested in learning about it, but also bring cultures that are
SK: Actually, our first group of students came in 2012, so we are just finishing our fifth year of students, and it’s a completely U.S. State Department-funded program. So, COD supports it through in-kind donations and assistance around the college, as we would assist all students, in many ways. VM: Besides the academic programs that these students were enrolled in, how were they able to build their technical skills during their time at
COD? SK: There are three parts to this program. The first, as you mention, is the academic piece, where they take a full credit load each semester, plus the summer where they have an orientation program. But they also have two other pieces to this program. The first is professional development. In their fields, they are required to put in about 75 hours out in the community and organization or company that focuses on their fields. So if our students are studying computer design or computer information systems, they will find a professional development experience in the company or the surrounding community. That is how they build their technical skills. The other thing they have to do is volunteer work in the community. They have to do 120 hours of volunteer work as a means of
giving back to the American people for being awarded the scholarship. It is also a great way for them to learn about American culture and learn about our community. That is also an opportunity to learn how American companies and organizations are run through volunteer work. VM: How has the college been able to find host families for these students and have them engaged with the community? SK: CCI doesn’t use host families. The housing for the students is funded through the U.S. State Department, and they all live together. What we do have is a social host program, which doesn’t involve housing, but we pair up local families with each student, so each student has a host family. That host family shares their family culture, invites them for a meal, takes them for outings in the city and has
NEWS
them over for holidays. It is a great way for our students to learn about American culture in the community by having a social host family. VM: Now, to the very essence of the entire program. How confident are you that this group of students will have an impact in their country? SK: I am sure this has been helping our students because of the feedback we get from the students. Every year, we continue to stay in touch with our students as they go back home, and we hear about
the things they do. Some of them start new businesses, some go back to school and finish their degrees and some of them join established businesses and get jobs in their fields. We get feedbacks from them saying how their experience here helped them get that job, or start that business back home. VM: How ready is the college to host another batch of students next semester? SK: There is a lot of planning that goes into hosting students. We are hosting a six weeks orien-
tation program for them, and the moment they get here, we are registering them for classes in the fall. There is a whole lot of work that is involved. VM: How are you going to grade the success of the entire program this year? SK: I think we got an A+. Every year, the group of students that comes here is very diverse and when they get here we integrate them into the college. I think the program has really been successful at COD.

SUMMER
Have a fun summer with the park district Courier Staff
WIKIMEDIA
Summer is notorious for having its boring days. Whether you think there’s just nothing to do, or the things you want to do are too expensive, it’s no secret that there will be times where this season is a drag. However, there’s a great service that has tons of great things to do for low prices: your local park district.
Naperville: Millennium Carillon Riverwalk $3 a person
Climb a 158 foot tower that houses Naperville’s Grand Carillon. Given as a gift to the city for the new millennium, this instrument is only one of
four in the United States. Not to mention, at the top of the tower you can see all of Naperville and the surrounding towns, and on a clear day a beautiful view of the Chicago skyline. Every Tuesday at the Carillon there are concerts by carillonneurs, both local and from around the world. They are running June 7-August 23, and they start at 7 o’clock. Post concert there will be moonlight tours in the Carillon
Centennial Beach and Paddle Boats
Riverwalk $8 for residents, $12 for non-residents This is the best place to cool off on a hot day.
10 // codcourier.org // Summer 2017
Once filled with natural spring water, this quarry is the go to swimming hole for locals. It features a zero-depth-entry, a sand area, shady places in the grass for lounging and a grill with delicious food. The paddle boats rentals are located at the second quarry in the park, and by far the deepest. This 75foot deep body of water has both paddle boats and kayaks that you can rent for an allotted amount of time (depending on how much you pay). These are a great thing to do with family or that special someone.
Glen Ellyn: Holes and Knolls Mini Golf
Maryknoll Park $6.75 a person This mini golf course features 36 holes of mini golf in a beautiful part of Glen Ellyn. Whether you go to crush your high score, or enjoy the local scenery, it’s sure to be a fun filled day.
Sunset Pool
Southwest Glen Ellyn $9.75 for residents, $12.75 for non-residents This zero-depth-entry pool is the perfect way to cool off after a long day. It features a playground both in the pool and in a sand area for kids, as well as tons of diving boards and water slides for the older kids and adults. The
always relaxed atmosphere ties the whole experience together, and I promise you will not forget it.
Lisle: Sea Lion Aquatic Park
Off of Short Street $9 for residents, $13 for non-residents This park is an adrenaline rush waiting to happen. It features two 50 foot body flumes, two drop slides, and a vortex pool for the older kids and adults. For the younger members of the family there is a splash playground, sand and water play areas, and a family zero-depth-entry pool. The nice thing about this aquatic center
that differs from the others in the area is that there is a teen pool, so the teens aren’t pulled out when it’s time for adult swim.
River Bend Golf Course
Off of Rt. 53 $20-22 a person, depending on the time and day Rated one of the top three 9-hole public courses in Illinois, this golf course is a local favorite. People from all over the surrounding towns travel to play here, and it’s as much to do with the scenery as it does with the game. The course is surrounded by stunning wetlands, and you can see a variety of animals while you’re working on your game.

Five must-see TV Shows this summer
SUMMER
From visionary director Noah Hawley, creator of the Fargo TV series, comes a fresh take on the live-action superhero genre led by Dan Stevens, who plays David Haller, a haunted man with powers beyond his imagination. Set in the same universe as the X-Men franchise, Legion follows the same components of your typical X-Men movie: super-powered individuals, a malevolent government keen on eradicating them, and a group offering sanctuary to these oppressed and misunderstood mutants. But the similarities stop there. Legion ingeniously pivots the narrative, incorporating psychic powers with the subject of mental illness as its protagonist suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. David Haller’s mind is a ticking atomic bomb in the middle of a labyrinth– as the people within his world race to find out the true nature of his illness and how it directly relates to his unprecedented telepathic and telekinetic abilities. The show’s anachronistic feel wonderfully interweaves with stunning eye-candy visuals, making it feel like a 1970s spy film full of twists and turns as the story dives deeper into David’s psyche.
The Handmaid’s Tale Hulu
Showtime
FX
American Gods Starz
Feeling particularly nostalgic about the 90s? You’re in luck ‘cause David Lynch’s surreal and eccentric town of Twin Peaks has finally re-emerged on the map five miles south of the Canadian border and twelve miles west of the state line. The show is returning with much of the original cast reprising their quirky small-town characters, including Kyle MacLachlan’s career defining Agent Dale Cooper. Big names like Laura Dern, Amanda Seyfried, David Duchovny and Monica Bellucci are getting in on the cherry pie and coffee action as well, which means it’s the perfect time to find out what made the show an enduring cult hit and classic in the first place. So make sure to binge-watch the first two seasons on Netflix if you haven’t seen it yet because the star-studded cast along with David Lynch’s bizarre imagination won’t have any room for disappointment. Very little is known about Showtime’s ‘reboot’ of the cult ‘90s series, but Lynch has said the series will pick up 25 years after the killing of Laura Palmer, and it seems like the small town is gonna find itself yet again at the center of another grisly and mysterious murder.
Aziz Ansari’s loose autobiography is one of the most realistic (and more positive) portrayals of the trials and tribulations millennials face today. Master of None follows Dev, a commercial actor struggling to find his way in New York City as he goes through numerous ups and downs both professionally and personally, with highlights on his ongoing pursuit of a romantic relationship. Now on its second season, there’s no stopping Master of None. It proves to be a tour de force of storytelling as we follow Dev in a small town in Italy, as he trains to become a pasta maker– a huge detour from his life in New York. If the idea of seeing the former Parks and Recreation star make pasta by hand isn’t enticing enough for you, the first episode of the second season is shot entirely in black and white, with the cinematography and style paying homage to Italian cinema.– It’s a marvel to see unfold, making the binge watch of the entire first season all the more rewarding. Not only that, you’ll get to see Aziz try his best to speak fluent Italian, and it’s very much quite endearing.

Legion
Dubbed as Hulu’s answer to Netflix, The Handmaid’s Tale is one of the streaming service’s most original series to date. Based on Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel of the same name, the release of the show is timelier than ever – giving us a telltale insight into the immediate future of what the United States could become under an authoritarian theocratic regime. The Republic of Gilead has risen from the trenches of the religious far-right and has brutally taken control of the government, stripping away years of progress and freedom from minorities, especially the women. The show stars Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss as Offred (literally meaning Of Fred, meaning someone who’s owned by Fred), as she poignantly recounts her story of becoming a concubine whose sole purpose is reproduction, to ensure the proliferation of humankind. The Handmaid’s Tale is a grim forewarning of what could happen to the United States if we take our rights for granted.
Neil Gaiman’s highly lauded fantasy novel, American Gods, has finally been adapted to the small screen by Hannibal creator, Bryan Fuller and Michael Green (the co-writer of the just-released Logan). And boy, it does not disappoint. Set in contemporary America where gods walk among us – both new and old - as they fight for dominance, power and salvation. A clever perspective and commentary on today’s immigration, the show gives us a glimpse on the rich tapestry on how these gods came to be and their struggle for survival and existence in a world rapidly losing belief. With breathtaking cinematography that is literally out of this world, American Gods transforms grit into fantasy teeming with the diversity and cultural potluck that reflects modern day America.

Kitt Fresa · News Editor
Directed by Edgar Wright Release Date: June 28th Genre: Crime, Action, Thriller After a long history with a crime boss, getaway driver Baby (Elgort, and yes Baby is his real first name) is soon to finish his last job and leave the business. Baby meets a girl at a diner around the same time and now plans to have a new life after his old life of crime, but things don’t work out. With a full cast and an explosive trailer, Baby Driver has already received a rare 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and could be a surprisingly large money maker this summer. Keep your eyes open for when it drops in theaters June 28th.
Dunkirk Directed by Christopher Nolan Release Date: July 21st Genre: Drama, Thriller, Action Set in WWII during the Battle of France, the German Army has surrounded Allied Soldiers who are rushing to be evacuated. Based on true events from the war, Christopher Nolan has come back into the spotlight with this new story of the thrilling events at Dunkirk. And from the trailers we’ve seen, it looks to be another one of Nolan’s great films shown with great intensity and edge-of-your seat moments.
It Comes At Night Directed by Trey Edward Shults Release Date: June 9th Genre: Horror, Mystery After a mysterious and unknown threat or disease terrorizes the world, a family shelters themselves in a remote forest, hoping to be far from the danger. Atomic Blonde Directed by David Leitch Release Date: July 28th Genre: Action, Mystery, Thriller In the midst of the Cold War, MI6’s top agent, Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron) is sent into Berlin to investigate the murder of one of her fellow agents and retrieve a list of double agents that’s gone missing. Atomic Blonde has caught a lot of eyes through its red band trailer and rightfully so. Atomic Blonde is absolutely action packed and soaked in neon light. Broughton appears very much to be the female John Wick and could very possibly turn Atomic Blonde into the Deadpool of 2017’s summer.
A Ghost Story Directed by David Lowery Release Date: July 7th Genre: Romance, Drama, Fantasy Shown at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and produced by A24, A Ghost Story is an existential film about a recently deceased, white sheet ghost who tries to reconnect with his wife through his childhood home. The ghost slips in and out of present time, reliving his past and being shown his path of love and his memories from his since concluded life. This film is said to “explore legacy, loss, and the essential human longing for meaning and connection.”

SUMMER
Summer Book Reviews: The Story of People Carlos Peterson · Reporter
Many summers are often plagued with lazy days and the uneventful. One of the many factors of the unforgettable summer are the people we spend them with. The books I recommend this summer bring stories about incredible people in all their triumphs as well as some of their worst failures. Perhaps the best way to unwind after two arduous semesters is to see the humanity of these brilliant people and reinvigorate your drive.
You Herd Me By: Colin Cowherd
The popular radio show host, Colin Cowherd, in his first book is quick witted and entertaining with his many outspoken opinions that fans have come to know and love over the years. The many topics and perspectives he covers is something that is true to the brand that Cowherd has always professed. He examines things such as Michael vs LeBron, why Andrew Luck was by far and away the rookie of the year over Robert Griffin III, even delving into his first childhood sports experience. This book is a must for the sports fan looking to be humored and informed.
Lucky Bastard By: Joe Buck
Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Screw that guy! He’s always hating on ‘insert your favorite team.’” Joe Buck has been the brunt of many jokes and malicious attacks for well over a decade now, and all you can do now is ask the question, “Why?” Buck was able to open up in Lucky Bastard and really allow us to see what goes into his work and what it was like to grow up with the legendary John Buck. As someone who grew up viewing Joe Buck as this monotone figure, it was almost earth shattering to see him talk about anything other than a third down reception or a key at-bat late in a league championship game. If you have any interest in sports broadcasting and would like to make a future in it, my suggestion is to pick up a copy of this book
Talking as Fast as I Can By:Lauren Graham
Attempting Normal By: Colin Cowherd
The host of the critically acclaimed podcast “WTF with Marc Maron” makes his first appearance as an author with Attempting Normal. Maron does a terrific job of allowing himself to laugh at his personal experiences that can be embarrassingly laugh-out-loud funny. Maron’s insight during his time in comedy is both brutally honest and downright uncomfortable, but then again that’s what we’ve come to expect from the neurotic comic. The book delves into a lot of self-examination and the perspective of hindsight that highlights the story of Maron’s career and everything that comes with it.
14 // codcourier.org // Summer 2017
Reading stories of sports heroes and their lives is a genre that is hard to pull me away from. So if a book not pertaining to sports piques my interest, it’s something I value dearly. If there’s one common denominator in it all, it’s that I love stories about people and their experiences. Lauren Graham, star of the former show, “Gilmore Girls” writes the second book of her writing career and talks about the hardships and insecurities of show business. I enjoyed Graham talking about her time on the set of Gilmore Girls and being able to work with Alexis Bledel, Melissa McCarthy, Amy Sherman-Palladino and the rest of the beloved cast. It was nice to read about her many experiences with dieting, the many methods out there and how so many are just scams. This is a great beach book if you’re looking for an interesting read.

ALBUM REVIEW “THIS OLD DOG”
Mac DeMarco: This Old Dog
SPOTIFY
Kitt Fresa · News Editor
For long time Mac Demarco fans This Old Dog is an excellent addition to Demarco’s arsenal of albums, for new fans it’s just as good. Demarco shows us a new more acoustic and free sounding album with This Old Dog while still keeping some of his previous themes. His previous work had a lot of keyboard and electric guitar with his own classic and unique sound. Luckily, everything still sounds like Demarco, nothing too fast and everything sounding nice. Throughout all of Demarco’s albums he’s always steadily maintained his quality and vibe of his music. He always seems to keep an even balance
of up-beat, slow, and keyboard heavy songs. This trend continues in This Old Dog through songs like, A Wolf Who Wears Sheeps Clothes, This Old Dog, and On the Level each reaching those upbeat, slow and keyboard heavy songs Demarco always gifts to his audiences. This even balance is not to be confused with a bland, synonymous sounding album though. Demarco parts from his previous work in an excellent fashion. This Old Dog maintains a nice level of difference, new material and style from his previous work all while keeping his unique sounds of quality. This Old Dog fits well
into a world of relaxing music which really turns this new album into a gateway for new fans of Demarco’s. Some music can be difficult to get into, some can be an acquired taste that takes awhile to get use to. Just like tasting your first glass of red wine, it probably wasn't your favorite until you adjusted. This Old Dog takes no adjusting to getting use to. If you haven't heard Mac Demarco before, This Old Dog is the perfect place to start. Whether you're at a family dinner or a picnic in the park on a perfect summer day, you can play Demarco with everyone to surely enjoy. Demarco’s latest album
has a distinct summery vibe which makes it perfect to listen to as summer begins to take its first steps this year. Songs like Still Beating, Moonlight on the River, and Baby You’re Out all share an energy that makes you want to step out outside and enjoy a sunny 80 degree day. This Old Dog isn't a perfect album though, and unfortunately neither is Mac Demarco. Demarco unfortunately I think has unexplored potential that he continues not to explore in This Old Dog. No with the possibility that Demarco might want to keep his albums relaxed a certain way, I understand. But, I’ve seen a much dif-
ferent Mac Demarco before, and it’s when he’s live in concert. I haven't had the honor to see Demarco in concert yet, but I have seen a multitude of different videos and he goes off the walls when he’s in concert. Demarco makes an unprecedented transformation from slow riding, easy going singer to full on rockstar. Demarco in concert will occasionally perform his own warped version of Metallica’s Enter Sandman and this is where you can watch and blissfully listen. Demarco shreds his heavy electric guitar paired with his band mates own guitars to an evil sounding, Frankenstein of a Metallica
song. It's magic, and is only seen in concert. I wish Demarco would change that. Perhaps, This Old Dog wasn't the album to transform and it makes sense to not have an album totally split in half by differing sounds. Hopefully his next album will show off his full potential. As for right now This Old Dog is a great album that everyone should give a listen to this summer. Mac Demarco will also be performing at Lollapalooza on Saturday, so if you want to see Demarco’s full potential in the neon lights of Lolla, that would be the time. I’ll see you there.

In the Summer - Anna Yvette & Laura Brehm Genre: Dance/Electronic Last year, Laura Brehm and Anna Yvette came together to perhaps make one of the best pieces of work of the entire year. This song is an entire memoir to everything summer related, and now with the return of those beach side days, the time has come to bring it back. Anna and Laura’s vocals are quite different from each other, but combined with Anna’s incredible synth work and Laura’s inclusion of the background sounds of birds and waves the product is absolutely amazing. Their combined production is a different style, slightly more retro than what their typical style is, but it is absolutely beautiful. It definitely succeeds in taking you to another place. —Alizay
Junk of the Heart - The Kooks Genre: Pop Rock The Kooks have been a pleasant beat to many of my summers, and their unique style of British pop rock is a nice change of pace. It’s very soothing in its beat as well as the vocals sung by Luke Pritchard. It’s an upbeat story of a person trying to make this girl happy with all the little things about life, and his enthusiasm jumps off the microphone. I recommend this song for a drive out to the beach this summer or perhaps just a ride with some friends. This song should keep the good times rolling. —Carlos
Baptized in Fire - Kid Cudi Genre: Hip-hop We don’t hear much from kid cudi these days, but that’s not to say his music has faded. Baptized in fire, his latest track introduces a fresh update to cudi’s own personal style. Baptized in fire sounds electric and active with cudi’s unique monotone voice rhyming over top of everything. This song is absolutely perfect for nights out or new additions to long to rap playlists. Be sure to check out this track and pray with the rest of us that cudi keeps making his great music. —Kitt
Summer Was Fun - My Dear Genre: Dance/Electronic This past year Summer Was Fun released their single My Dear. My Dear consists a combination of sweet natured lyrics set alongside a nice baseline with an excellent amount of synth work. Its peppy and catchy tunes drive you head first into the vibes of summer and make you want to dance. The lyrics “I’m coming right away My Dear” give that sense that summer and that good feeling of beachy breezes are right around the corner. The beautiful combination of synchronization with the base alongside the vocals allow this song to truly be one of their best work.—Vandy

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight.
