Emergent Patterns in Nature - Sardines .
The emergent nature of sardines comes across when its individual behaviour is noticed when in a swarm. Defined by the study of the sardne run in South Africa, an astonishing phenomena in nature, are a certain set of rules that govern the emergent behaviour of sardines.
Rule 1 - Sardines move in threads in a swarm. Rule 2 - Any two threads don’t move too far away from each other nor too close to each other. Rule 3 - Threads of sardines always move away from predators. These three rules then govern the reason for fabric like behaviour of the swarm.
process model
In the final phaze of the study the micro level analysis of sardines as threads was combined with the macro level analysis of sardines as a fabric and was translated into the final model which primarily studies the formation of different spaces on the macro level and also follows the micro level rules that causes such a behaviour.
process model

Linked Hybrid Systems Khetwadi
Chaotic and disorganized on my first visit , Khetwadi is a place that still has the essence of the Mumbai city that it had a few decades back. Often misleading the aliens to this place, about its simplicity by its complex way of functioning in a way attracted them to Khetwadi again .Solving the complexity of Khetwadi and finding peace in this chaos , was the reason why I landed there every weekend. A school transforming into a public gym in the afternoon and used for social activities at night and it sharing space with a saree printing workshop was one piece of the jigsaw I saw in Khetwadi that puzzled me and before I could solve this puzzle I was thrown at with a space that was a commercial area in the morning ,social in the afternoon and back to commercial again in the evening and residential at night, a residential area sharing compound with a school and a garage , a temple with chawls in it , a horse shed with a pipe welding shop and residential areas. Going back home confused about the minimum division between the private and public realm in Khetwadi made me think about hybrid systems that existed in nature and functioned brilliantly just like Khetwadi . A hybrid means cross and hybrid in architecture means interdependence of different activities in our day to day life .
Hybrid existing at the lowest level and spacial reactions to spacial demands.
Hybrids at a particular level reacting with each other visually and spacially
My next few visits to Khetwadi went in finding the different hybrid systems that existed there and what activities were a part of that hybrid . In doing this I also understood in detail how the space in a particular hybrid system adapts to the demands of these activities . this is possible because of the physical and the visual connections between these activities within the space. This step of my study was like finding the different pieces of the jigsaw puzzle and my next step was even more challenging, which was to solve the puzzle. To find the links between different hybrid system, I stalked the activity from a hybrid and studied how that activity becames a part of the other system forming a hybrid at a higher level, for example , I stalked a labourer from a milk products manufacturing unit and saw him entering a shop on the main lane that sells milk products .Similarly finding links between different hybrids systems I solved the entire jigsaw puzzle and saw the co-existence of a well connected hybrid system at a much higher level.
Hybrid 1- commerce, social, religious and residential
Hybrid 3- commerce, social and residential
LInked Hybrid systems
A hybrid in general means cross ,in architecture hybrid means co-existence of different parameters in our day to day life like social, comercial, residential, educational etc. In Khetwadi many hybrid systems exist at different levels and how these hybrids interact with one another spacially and visually forming a much developed and well connected hybrid system at a higher level. Hybrids at diferent levels are physically linked within itself for the betterment of every parameter and also with other existing hybrids forming a system. This system is called as LINKED HYBRID SYSTEM.
Hybrid 2- commerce, social and residential
Exploded axonometric view of the representation of different levels of hybrids coexisting
Hybrid 4- educational, recreational, commercial and public services

The whole intent of this study was to draw a theory on community living in Mumbai. The site given to our group was Cusrow Baug-a Parsi Society. The conclusions of our research was drawn in the lines of how Cusrow Baug has over a period of time transformed within itself and at the same time acted like a gated community. Our study in terms of mapping parameters in the society at the same time studying different housing typologies have formed the basis of the theory.

ANT TRAILS is derived from Steven Johnson’s book ‘Emergence’ based on emergence theory and its applications. Ideas like why the whole is smarter than the sum of its part, feedback, self organisation, and adaptive learning in ant food search system were studied in detail to develop a set of parameters. These parameters were applied to a developed module to study the deformation which resulted in the canopy at the corridor.

Teach for India Library Furniture Play cube
The intent of the project was to design a furniture piece that would fit into any site context without it looking out of place. The furniture piece since was to be designed for a library had to provide storage and seating as the primary need, the secondary functions involuntarily revolved around the basic supplies. The concept for the design was to keep in mind that this was designed for kids and the rest intiutively followed the urge to make the inhabitants happy.

The redbull soap box race is an event for all those who love adventure racing, and are inspired in chanelling their skills in creativity and inventions. The teams compete on speed , creativity, showmanship and the stage presence. The event has been conducted in 70 countries and it was the first time in Mumbai, India . Our team ‘The Dabbawallas’ bagged the first prize amonst 70 others competing ( selected over 700 priliminary design). Starting from understanding dabbawallas to priliminary design sketches to fabrication to the race, everything was a complete and a joyful experience.

mobility
A hawker is a vendor of merchandise that can be easily transported and sold aggressively to public, especially by calling out. They do not have a permanent built up structure and they may be stationary in the sense that they occupy space on the pavements or other public/private spaces or, they may be mobile in the sense that move from place to place by carrying their wares on push carts or in baskets on their heads.

design intent. - Variability : To move away from standardization in favour of customization. -Reciprocity between drawing and making
responsible for the means and methods of fabrication and in turn improving the design as a whole.
-Living Architecture : Its ability to be able to transform itself in response to a force.
-Mass production : Incresing the speed, efficiency, quality and decreasing cost price of the product.
-Mass customization : Providing the user with the tool of personalizing his own insert.
