AN INDIENEXT PICK FOR OCTOBER 2010
Set against the powerful lakeshore landscape of northern Minnesota, Safe from the Sea is a heartfelt novel in which a son returns home to reconnect with his estranged and dying father thirty-five years after the tragic wreck of a Great Lakes ore boat that the father only partially survived and that has divided them emotionally ever since. When his father for the first time finally tells the story of the horrific disaster he has carried with him so long, it leads the two men to reconsider each other.

Peter Geye has delivered an archetypal story of a father and son, of the tug and pull of family bonds, of Norwegian immigrant culture, of dramatic shipwrecks and the business and adventure of Great Lakes shipping in a setting that simply casts a spell over the characters as well as the reader.

“A deep hearted novel of bitten lives lived out on the cold shore of a ferocious world. In the silence of their existence, the dignity of their bearing, Geye compassionately renders the magnitudes of their despair, endurance and greatness.” —Robert Olmstead, author of Coal Black Horse

An Accidental Mother jon simpson
by katherine anne kindred
Katherine Kindred has been previously published in the literary journal Memoir (and). She lives in Phoenix with her dog, Sophie. This is her first book.
After her divorce, Kate Kindred decided that she would live her life without children. But then she fell in love with Jim, a handsome, caring man who had custody of his young son, Michael. And she fell in love with the boy, too. During the six years they all lived together, Kate learned the deep joys of motherhood—that was the gift that Michael gave her. But when her relationship with Jim ended, he denied her any contact with Michael. And her heart was broken. An Accidental Mother beautifully describes the joys of mothering a young boy through complicated times. With sweet simple anecdotes and complex emotions, Kate Kindred marks every page with tears, including those that the most loving laughter can bring to any parent.

Welcoming a barrage of blind dates, I soon learned that being childless at forty is a rarity. At my age nearly everyone single has at one point been married, and most of those marriages have resulted in a child or two. I joked to my girlfriends that surely I was meant to be a stepmother instead of a birth mother. Someday I would meet someone with two teenagers on their way to college who did not need a new mother and whose father was financially and emotionally prepared for a long-term casual commitment. Obviously, I hadn’t fully evaluated other possible outcomes. Welcome Michael, just months shy of four years old, with dark-blond hair and big blue eyes, in dire need of a mother. Oh, and did I mention Jim, the ever handsome and charming father of said boy? The first time this child tested me with the word “mom” and then looked up into my eyes with a little grin, waiting, waiting, waiting to see what my response was going to be, I knew I was in deep trouble. His inquiries have continued, albeit with modifications along the way. Once I was paging through a magazine while he sat beside me with a coloring book and crayons, and he stopped to ask me if he had come out of my stomach. “No,” I told him, “you came out of your mother’s stomach.” “But I want you to be my mother!” I hesitated, then pulled out the bottom of my sweatshirt to make myself look pregnant. “Okay, get in my stomach.” Michael giggled. “Kate! You can’t go backward!” And then, just as I began to worry that the joke was improper, he asked, “What should I color next?”

...Fear Itself emily hawthorne
by candida lawrence
Candida Lawrence has written three memoirs: Reeling & Writhing, Change of Circumstance and Fear Itself. She is also the author of a collection of essays, Vanishing, and is Founding Editor of the journal
Now in Paperback
Memoir (and). She lives in California.
In light of the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in Japan, the remarkable personal story that comprises Fear Itself becomes a cautionary tale. Unwittingly exposed to low-level radiation in the 1940s, Candida Lawrence has lived courageously with its effects throughout her life. Fear Itself traces her years struggling to have a child and her slow waking to the secrets that governments and institutions withheld from the women of her generation. The task for her—and for women who have shared her experience—has always been to believe herself into wholeness and to survive her losses and her illnesses until there is nothing left to fear. As always, Lawrence’s writing is filled with smart, gentle anger, sweet sadness and the most private sense of what is vital and important. In Fear Itself, Lawrence’s deeply felt remembrances grant us an honest account of what it is to live in an unstable world. It is a truly personal account that sheds wide light on the world’s ongoing nuclear decisions. What personal life story could be more timely?
}
“Candida Lawrence's valuable story is frightening in its detailed information about the American lives (old & unborn) lost to the secret keepers of the national & corporate nuclear industries” — Grace Paley
“A powerful book . . . wry at times, yet unflinching when faced with complex, often tragic revelations. The story is one we should all know if we are to chart a better future for those who come after us.” — Susan Griffin, author, A Chorus of Stones, The Private Life of War “A powerful voice of womanhood . . . searching for words to speak her own truth and gradually finding them against incredible inner and outer odds.” — Marion Woodman

Touch and Go shelby graham
by thad nodine
Thad Nodine grew up in Florida and now lives in Santa Cruz. His fiction and nonfiction have appeared in many magazines. Touch and Go, which won the Dana Award for the Novel, is his first novel.
“Touch and Go is a strong debut—a high-velocity vision quest that keeps surprising and surprising.” —Jonathan Franzen A blind, recovering addict gets into an old station wagon with his sponsors and their foster family for a drive from Burbank to Florida to deliver a handmade casket to a dying grandfather. As they battle their way across the southern half of the nation, this rag-tag American family falls prey to love and lies, greed and violence, crime and Katrina. With a voice reminiscent of John Irving, Nodine produces a classic “road-picture” novel that is part Travels with Charley, part As I Lay Dying, and part On The Road.

Unbridled Books
Touch and Go is a rich and rangy story about how we can ever know anyone when the information we receive from them is so fragmentary and misleading. Kevin, the novel’s blind narrator, is one of the most perceptive figures in recent fiction. And his desire to do no harm is contagious. Through Kevin’s rich senses—and his boundless compassion and empathy—Nodine gives us a multicultural portrait of what just might be the true America. And he does so with deep affection for everyone along the way.
I first heard the lilt of Isa’s voice in group counseling, but I spoke with her first in a hallway, where she stopped me with a soft hand on my arm. I knew who it was before she spoke; back then she wore a cheap fragrance several traces too sweet. I turned my face to hide my scar. “You don’t have to be shy with me,” she said, bringing my chin forward with her hand. “You’re quite striking.” I drew her hand away from my chin because I wanted to touch her fingers, which were thin and long, with fingernails bitten too short. Her palm was soft. “Do you know me?” she said. “Isa,” I said. She brushed full into me, enlivening my chest with her breasts before stepping back. “You’re cute when you blush. Do you know what I look like?” I savored the lilt in her voice and her friendly laugh, but I figured she was playing to an audience, so I waited for the chuckles of others. There were none. No sounds of people at all. But still I couldn’t let myself relax. “Is that important,” I said, “how you look?” “You’re right,” she said. “It’s more important how we feel.” She lifted my hand to her face and dragged my fingers through her hair. She let me feel her long neck and the way her throat jiggled as she laughed. She traced my hand along her shoulders, arms and thighs. Her skirt clung to my fingers as if the material were on my hand instead of her hips. My fingertips tingled and my breathing quickened. She had on a halter top that gave her an open back and held her breasts like pendulums; I knew because she traced my fingers along her stomach and up under the fullness so pliable and resistant through the thin cotton—all of which made me grin like a goof.

The Mistress Contract
by she and he
He is a wealthy businessman.
She could be almost any woman.
UNBRIDLED BOOKS brings you a manuscript so private that we could only publish it anonymously. The remarkable true document that is The Mistress Contract opens with a piece of paper that was signed in 1981 by a woman and her wealthy lover. The contract establishes an exchange that she thinks fair: If he will provide an adequate and separate home for her and cover her expenses, she will provide him with “mistress services”: “All sexual acts as requested, with suspension of historical, emotional, psychological disclaimers.” For the duration of the agreement, she will become his sexual property. Then—on a small recorder that fit in her purse—this extraordinary and unconventional couple began to tape their conversations about their relationship, conversations that took place while travelling, over dinner at home and in restaurants, on the phone, even in bed. This book is based on those tapes. It is a candid record of what they had to say to each other privately about the arrangement and its power relations, their physical relationship and the sexual forces that shaped it. As private and intimate as it is, though, the book also turns an unblinking light on a period of intense upheaval between men and women.
She “I assume men are fragile. They need
to believe that their techniques are sufficient, and if the woman doesn’t swoon she’s not swoon material, is frigid.” … He “You might think you can get out of it, but
habit will trap you. We’ll develop behavior patterns and you won’t be able to escape.” … She “[Men] are what they do, what they say,
what they eat, how they move, and whether or not they lick the backs of spoons.” … He “What we’ve been talking about is how to
survive in a relatively interesting combination.” …
} excerpts
She “But aiming always for orgasm is a great burden.
The goal consumes the pleasure and makes me wonder where all my other senses are and if they’re up to something odd or more interesting.” … He “That’s true. If you press me too hard,
I won’t perform. Then I leave.” She “That’s a negative power. I can produce a
withering of the penis by my demand for something which, possibly, is very unnatural.”
Unbridled Books
Looking back now, thirty years later, this extraordinary couple—who are still together—are willing to reveal their most private moments to our scrutiny. What they capture in The Mistress Contract is an unapologetic revelation and a bold provocation.
A remarkable relationship that lasted. A surprisingly frank conversation:
