Women, don’t apologize when someone invades your space
O
h, I’m sorry,” the woman said to the man who bumped into her while they were both standing in line waiting to order food. Yep. That’s how it works. Women are so good at apologizing for taking up space – even when others are the ones guilty of encroaching it. What’s that about? She was standing there waiting her turn when he bumbled into her personal space – and yet she is the one who apologizes. I’m not exactly what you’d call an equal rights fanatic, but I do believe we all get to occupy our own space. So, why do we feel compelled to apologize when others invade it? It’s ridiculous. And, unfortunately, it seems to be primarily a female affliction. Men, generally speaking, just keep on keepin’ on. The bumbling man probably didn’t mean to bump into the woman standing in that line, but at the same time, it certainly didn’t merit an apology. It’s not like he physically hurt her or anything. Seems that most of the time, for men, apologies are reserved for serious infractions (for which they are well equipped to judge) and that particular situation most definitely did not qualify. Of course, to every “rule” there are exceptions. My brother, who was most definitely a man, was a chronic apologizer. He was constantly saying sorry for what I felt were silly things. It drove
me crazy. He was programmed to apologize. Maybe it is a form of considerateness – we don’t want to impose on anyone or cause any bad feelings or ill-will whatsoever. And when the flow is interrupted we feel inclined to atone for the moment – even if it’s an event derailed by an external force completely beyond our control – we still feel compelled to apologize. My brother yearned for a life of simplistic perfection. When things didn’t work out like he thought they should it made him sad and sorry for those involved or affected. He yearned for an idyllic world, full of happiness, love, joy and genuine goodness. When it wasn’t like that I think he took on a level of responsibility and ultimately the responsibility of the apology. Apologizers are chronically sorry the world is an imperfect place. For some reason it seems there always needs to be more explanation and justification for the simple failures in life. Whether we are saying no to something or justifying the space we occupy at the moment or the situation at hand – for some reason there always needs to be more. I guess that’s just how it is. Although, next time someone bumps into me, I will think twice before automatically throwing out the generic, female apology. That’s my space too and last I checked, I too have a lease on life. And for that – I am not one bit sorry.

Red Lodge race April 27 Looking for some adventure to add life to your spring training regimen? Or how about a challenge to take on with some good friends? Look no further than Peaks to Prairie, a challenge that spans from the heights of the Beartooth Mountains to the open majesty of the Yellowstone River. The 36th annual event will be Sunday, April 27. This year’s competiton features a course that is certain to challenge all participants. The run leg starts on Beartooth Pass above Red Lodge and covers 9.3 miles into town. The bike leg departs Red Lodge for Columbus, Mont., along MONT Highway 78, covering 49 miles. The bike leg transitions to the boat leg at Itch-Kep-Pe Park, and boaters dash the remaining 10 miles to Special K Ranch, where the final festivities are held. Competitors can choose between the triathlon that covers these three legs, or a duathlon that covers the first two legs only. The fastest way to run this gauntlet is to provide a fresh body for each leg. Pull together a group and take on the adventure as a team. There are categories for male, female, mixed, and “fun” (family, tandem, etc. - no medals awarded) teams; open and masters age divisions; and sport or racing qualifications (based on the length of the boat used). Concert benefits Serenity Pregnancy Resource Center Country musician Collin Raye will perform in Cody on Saturday, May 3. “It’ll be a great community concert,” Serenity Pregnancy Resource Center executive director Kerry Gunther said. “We’re excited and it will be a fun evening for everybody.” The 7:30 p.m. performance (with doors opening at 7 p.m.) will be held at Wynona Thompson Auditorium. Tickets are $35. They are available at Serenity, UPS and the Cody Chamber, as well as at Blair’s in Powell. The concert is a fundraising event for Catholics United for Life and Serenity. Raye rose to fame in the 1990s, claiming 16 No. 1 country hits (including four Billboard No. 1 hits) and 24 top 10 records. He also is a 10-time male vocalist of the year nominee (five Country Music Association and five Academy of Country Music nominations).
Raye’s Billboard hits are: • “Love, Me.” • “In This Life.” • “My Kind of Girl.” • “I Can Still Feel You.” In 2011, Raye released a spiritual/ inspirational album, “His Love Remains.” Not only does Raye performs his hits nationally, he also has added Christian and Catholic concerts. Raye’s business manager approached Serenity while visiting Cody last year. “Collin Raye has an interesting story related to our situation at Serenity,” Gunther said. Raye’s wife, Connie, suffered a stroke and coma during child birth and Raye was given the decision to end life support. He didn’t, and nine weeks later Connie woke. Raye became the national spokesperson for the Terri Schiavo Life and Nope Network in September 2011.
(Schiavo was the focus of a nationallypublicized right-to-life case in the United States. She died in 2005.) According to the Catholics United For Life website, catholicsunitedforlife. org, the organization’s mission is to “support the Catholic Church in its missions to restore the moral principles of the natural law and Divine Revelation, focusing in a special way on the right to life for all human persons and on the integral part that sexual morality plays in life issues.” Serenity offers free and confidential resources including pregnancy confirmation and options. Serenity is funded exclusively through grants and individual donations, Gunther said. Serenity and Catholics United for Life will divide proceeds to benefit their missions.

Sixth annual event April 25-27 Songs of the Cowboys weekend festival returns to Cody on April 25-27. Performers from six states (Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, South Dakota, Nebraska and Arkansas) will convene at the Holiday Inn for the sixth-annual festival. The Bandana Room will provide an intimate setting for six scheduled performances: • 2 p.m., Friday, April 25. • 7 p.m., Friday, April 25. • 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, April 26. • 3 p.m., Saturday, April 26. • 7 p.m., Saturday, April 26. • 9 a.m., Sunday, April 27.
Tickets are $10 per person, per performance. The Friday, April 25, show is sponsored by Friends of the Library. On Saturday, the 7 p.m. concert will feature Glenn Ohrlin and the Bunkhouse Corral, which claims 386 years of “combined cowboy history.” The Sunday 9 a.m. concert will be the Cowboy Gospel Hour. “Jam sessions” will be held at the Irma and Adriano’s at 9:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Performers range in age from 13 to 87 years old. Throughout each day, the performers will entertain seniors at West Park Long Term Care Center, Absaroka Assisted Living, the Beehive Home and Spirit Mountain Hospice House.

Meteorologist teaches how to spot severe weather conditions April 22 Chris Jones, meteorologist, will come to Powell from the Riverton, Wyoming office of the National Weather Service to offer weather spotter training at a free program on Tuesday, April 22, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Room 70 of the NWC Fagerberg Building at Northwest College. Participants can attend this program to become an authorized volunteer spotter or just sit back and watch a media presentation of exceptional weather displays. This is a free program. Jones will teach how to identify cloud elements indicative of impending severe weather conditions. As trained weather spotters, locals can provide critical decision-making observations
that help meteorologists fulfill the National Weather Service’s mission to protect lives and property. An exciting multimedia presentation with impressive videos helps students gain spotter skills that help them identify conditions that lead to severe weather like tornadoes and flash floods. Knowing how to spot impending severe conditions can be lifesaving. This is a great program for families, youth groups, seniors and anyone interested in weather science.
