The rules of Sudoku are simple. Enter digits from 1 to 9 into the blank spaces. Each row must contain one of each digit. So must each column, as must each 3x3 square. Each Sudoku has a unique solution that can be reached logically without guessing. For more on sudoku visit www.sudoku.com.

The winter/spring lineup for the Northwest Wyoming Film Series includes five Oscar-nominated movies. The premier film “Philomena” will show at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at Big Horn Cinemas. The series will continue with “Dallas Buyers Club” on Feb. 18, “Nebraska” on Feb. 25, “12 Years a Slave” on March 4, “Inside Llewyn Davis” on March 11, “Her” on March 18 and “Muscle Shoals” on March 25. The title of the last film on April 1 will be announced later. All movies begin at 7:30 p.m. and play one night only. Admission prices are $6 for NWFS members and $8 for the public. The membership of those who joined in fall 2013 covers both the fall and winter/spring series. Membership for the 2014 winter/spring series can be purchased for $15 in the theater lobby before the NWFS shows. Members will receive weekly emails about each upcoming film.

Information about the series will be available at bighorncinemas.net and on Facebook. For access to the NWFS Facebook page, contact Harriet Bloom-Wilson at hbloomwilson@gmail.com with your FB name. “We believe we’re offering an exceptionally strong lineup for the upcoming season,” BloomWilson said. “Many of the movies feature actors who’ve been nominated for academy awards, while five of the movies – ‘Philomena’, ‘Dallas Buyers Club’, ‘Nebraska’, ‘12 Years a Slave’ and ‘Her’, – are up for best picture. “The talented Coen brothers wrote and directed ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’, while the magical music from ‘Muscle Shoals’, a documentary, will delight the audience. For the final show, we hope to offer a high-caliber foreign film.” The NWFS committee members are Jan and Lee Hermann, Anne Young and Jim Nielson, Buzzy and Peter Hassrick all of Cody, and Bloom-Wilson and Richard Wilson of Powell.

L VE Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Desperate to rid himself of the memories of a break-up (and, by extension, the pain), a man enlists a company that specializes in wiping away such memories.

Blue Valentine What’s more painful than watching a married couple fall apart? Having it cruelly juxtaposed with how they got together.

If spending your Valentine’s Day snuggled up watching ‘The Notebook’ isn’t on your priority list, here are 10 movies that will justify that lack of any warm fuzzy feeling you might have.

(500) Days of Summer A surprisingly painful look at unrequited love. A hopeless romantic falls in love with a woman who does not believe in relationships or true love.

The Way We Were What happens when your ideal guy or girl isn’t your soulmate? A married couple struggles to work out their marriage, but their polar opposite political views and dreams tear them apart.

Closer The love lives of four flawed Londoners whose attractive exteriors belie a set of coal-like hearts. They take it in turn to lie and cheat their way into and out of each other’s beds.

Fatal Attraction A married lawyer has a onenight stand with a colleague, but he quickly learns how much it will come back and haunt him when she begins to stalk him and his family.

American Beauty A glimpse at how terrible a “white picket fence” marriage can be. A suburban father stuck in a mid-life crisis falls in love with his daughter’s best friend.

War of the Roses This darkly funny comedy is a look at a divorcing couple fighting to the death over who gets their house.

Revolutionary Road A couple whose lofty ambitions are worn down by life in suburbia. As they realise it’s all they’ll ever have, they start to turn on each other.

The Break-Up After a messy break up, a couple viscously fights each for sole custody of their shared, luxurious condo.

Here are a few ideas for your Anti-Valentine’s Day playlist: “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor

Cynics Matching Game According to Plato, “Love is a grave mental disease.” See if you can match these other anti-love zingers to the person who said them.

1.

“I was nauseous and tingly all over. I was either in love or I had smallpox.”

2.

“Always get married in the morning. That way if it doesn’t work out, you haven’t wasted the whole day.”

3.

“Today is Valentine’s Day. Or, as men like to call it, extortion day.”

4.

“I’ve never yet met a man who could look after me. I don’t need a husband. What I need is a wife.”

6.

“Love is a fire. But whether it is going to warm your hearth or burn down your house, you can never tell.”

7.

“God gave men both a penis and a brain, but unfortunately not enough blood supply to run both at the same time.”

8.

“If you love something set it free, but don’t be surprised if it comes back with herpes.”

9.

“My love life is like a piece of Swiss cheese. Most of it’s missing, and what’s there stinks.”

A. B. C. D. E. F. G. H. I. J.

“If love is the answer, could you please rephrase the question?”

10.

“Love is only the dirty trick played on us to achieve continuation of the species.” ANSWERS: 1–H, 2–B, 3–C, 4–A, 5–E, 6–F, 7–J, 8–G, 9–I, 10–D.

ramblings By: René Huge

Powder day friends might save your life “Eight to 10 on top, baby.” Those are great words to wake up to on a ski day. We were planning to go snowboarding. As an added bonus – it turned out to be a powder day. Naturally, the next words that follow are a powder-hound’s rule – “No friends on a powder day.” I get it. The goal on a powder day is to lay all the first tracks you can. You can’t be bogged down waiting for people when there are runs of untouched freshies calling (screaming) your name. There is nothing like it. Powder days are the reason I love to snowboard. Surfing on a sea of snow and floating into the ever-elusive white room is one of the most magical sensations I’ve ever experienced. Originally, I got into snowboarding because that was what my kids were doing. I’d taught them how to ski when they were young, but once they were old enough to strap on a board, there was no turning back. It quickly became evident that if I had any intentions of hanging with my kiddos, I needed to get on their snowtrain. So, I did. And I love it. Unfortunately, in all my years on two planks, I rarely had the

opportunity to ski powder. Learning to ski in the Midwest mecca of man-made snow, I had plenty of experience carving edges into icy slopes, but no experience in white rooms – until this past year. When you find yourself engulfed in the cloud of white, you feel like you are momentarily blinded while fluidly floating on air. The smile that overtakes your face is insuppressible and being in that moment is like taking a huge shot of adrenaline. You scream with euphoria inside your own being having just discovered pure bliss. The white room is small and rare, but there’s only room for one – you. This is why, I’ve learned, that on a powder day, it is best to ride by myself. Friends on a powder day are a distraction, a hindrance. They slow you down and let’s be frank here – they aren’t going to help you ride more powder. Those untouched runs only remain untracked for a brief amount of time and selfishly, you know you want it all for yourself. Lap after lap until it’s all gone or until you’re physically prevented from riding any more powder, or worse yet, until you need ski patrol. Then suddenly, you can’t wait to make new friends on a powder day. You want those friends in red, right there in front of you, as soon as possible. A sense of grateful relief washes over you when they appear. Pure thankfulness for your new friends, as they navigate you down the hill – dragging you behind in the white room of their dust. I suppose it’s safe to say that on certain ski days, powder or not, the saying might be: “Make new friends on a powder day. They just might save your life.”
