Smultronstalle This is a Swedish word for a super-underrated place that holds true beauty and personal value to someone. It could be natural, it could be urban, and it could be a corner. This was the feeling I had when I first visited this place. This was because when I was inside this space, it felt different from the surrounding area. The roof and floor of the ramp crated a frame for the area around it and I found myself looking out at the landscape. Being inside this space creates a shelter with the world happening around you. It is as if the space frames the landscape and you are merely observing the activity.
1. Experiencing Space The goal of this assignment was to roam the City of Buffalo and find a space that had an interesting characteristic that related directly to the inhabitant.

2. Documenting Space The space chosen was documented and a set of as built documents were created of the space using CAD.

3. Negative Inversion of Space A solid mass model was created using Rhino. Then a plaster cast of the positive space was created and modelled as an exploded axon using Rhino and Illustrator.

4. Inhabiting Space The final part of the project was to create a residence out of the plaster pieces created. This was a multi- step process to decide what truly drew the inhabitant to the original space, and to understand how this can be applied to the final space.

What was most drawing of the original space was that it seemed to be distinct from the surrounding area. It’s engineered design made it stick out from the surrounding landscape. Inside, the roof and floor framed the surrounding view. I took this idea into the design of a living space. Two large pieces protrude above the flat approach. The top of the building in the center is level with the approaching landscape and is flanked on both sides be the larger pieces. This effectively frames the view as you approach. The remnants of the ramp are replaced with glass, becoming the main source of light to the space. All view inside is facing forward to the west down the slope. The building is large and precariously placed on the slope. This makes it stand out from the surrounding landscape.
4.1 Perspective Render Task one was to create a hand render of one plaster piece. The pieces were treated as hollow forms and drawing in perspective using CAD. The drawing was to be rendered on mylar, and portrayed the feeling of the initial space.
A characteristic of the initial space is that it framed the surrounding landscape. To portray that in a render, I stippled the perspective to give depth, then I placed the mylar in front of a cropped image, as if the picture is being framed by the render.

4.2 Plaster and Site ArrangeGiven a site of a 25 degree slope, the plaster pieces were to be treated as hollow space, and were arranged on the slope to create an interesting form. The form was then covered in plaster mesh to create a hollow form.

5. Space and Structure
Split into teams, we roamed the studio spaces to look for forms which seem to provide for both a specific spatial experience and structural performance. With our assigned material of paper mache, we were to create a thin-shell structure that 8 people could occupy Cody Wilson 16
5.1 Small Group Studies
In groups of 4, we studied the studio space and researched affective structuring methods. We created smaller spans to test the materiality of paper mache and its structural ability.

6. Full Scale Model Split into groups of seven, we collaborated and agreed on a final design. Then we built the final design at full scale.

The final design documented the Gathering space for critiques in the garage. Upon documenting the space a heat map was developed, the hottest areas being those most gathered in. Next, a X Y grid was laid out on the floor using rope. The grid was laid were the most gathering occurred. The grid was then raised into the Z direction to portray the gathering plan using height. The final rope mesh was then paper mached to close off the space.

Axial gathering is a representation of the physical space created by gathering in the area. This was achieved by the abstraction of the gathering plan into a 2D grid that was then laid out on the floor and raised in the Z direction.
