SCIENCES and Health Professions
PETERSON HALL
is a state-of-the-art facility, with a $13 million renovation completed in 2013. It is home to Coe’s Biology, Chemistry and Physics departments as well as the pre-health program. The Nursing Department is located in the adjacent building, Stuart Hall.
Coming to campus in
FALL 2022
Coe’s new CENTER FOR HEALTH AND SOCIETY
will create dedicated advising and preparation space for students in all majors who want to impact the health and well-being of others. The growing health care industry is in need of all disciplines to provide excellent holistic care. For instance: • Management and accounting majors are needed in hospital administration. • English majors can learn medical writing. • Art majors could practice medical illustration. • Religion majors could study the role of spirituality in healing. By leveraging its location near the MedQuarter Regional Medical District, Coe is able to coordinate internships and job shadowing experiences, secure local mentors and bring in guest speakers from the community.

OUR PROFESSORS ARE APPROACHABLE
Work one-on-one with a faculty mentor to acquire the skills and specialized knowledge required to enter the career field of your choice. At Coe, biology faculty, not teaching assistants, will be the ones teaching you and helping you get where you want to go.
OFF-CAMPUS LEARNING
Canoe to class at the Coe Wilderness Field Station in the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota, study marine biology while snorkeling over coral reefs in Belize during May Term or assess water quality and access in community clinics in rural southern Africa.
WE’RE SUCCESSFUL IN THE REAL WORLD
Biology majors put their knowledge into action through internships across the nation. Recent internship placements include Integrated DNA Technologies, Linn County Conservation Agency, Pioneer Hi-Bred International, MERCK, National Institutes of Health, Mayo Clinic and Baylor’s pediatric AIDS clinics in Africa.
K ALINA ESKEW ’21
majored in biology and environmental science. They are pursuing a doctorate in animal behavior as a recipient of a prestigious and competitive Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) award from the National Science Foundation. With more than 12,000 applications, only about 2,000 fellowships are awarded by the NSF. As a GRFP fellow, Kalina is able to attend graduate school with a yearly stipend of $34,000 and a $12,000 cost-ofeducation allowance for three years.

Chemistry and Biochemistry YOU WON’T JUST BE WASHING TEST TUBES
Coe is one of a select number of small colleges chosen to serve as a host site for the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates program. Every summer nearly 20 students spend the summer on campus doing graduate-level research in chemistry and biochemistry with faculty members.
WE HAVE THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY
The Chemistry Department has acquired approximately $1 million worth of instrumentation in the past 10 years. A large percentage of this funding was provided by the National Science Foundation.
TRAVEL TO NATIONAL CONFERENCES
Chemistry and biochemistry majors have the opportunity to attend and present at the National American Chemical Society meeting. Recent trips include Denver, New Orleans, Salt Lake City and San Francisco.

AUSTIN CIESIELSKI ’15
developed an interest in forensic science at Coe. He performed biochemistry research for the first time on campus, which familiarized him with DNA extraction and research techniques. His studies in chemistry and hands-on laboratory experience paved the way for his doctorate degree from Oklahoma State University. Austin is currently a federal contractor with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (CDC-NIOSH) and a general and technical supervisor of a clinical toxicology lab.

WHY SHOULD GRADUATE STUDENTS HAVE ALL THE FUN?
Coe is a national leader in undergraduate research. We are one of a select number of small colleges chosen to serve as a host site for the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates program. Nearly 50 students receive housing, course credit and a stipend to spend the summer on campus doing high-level physics research.
SHOW ME THE MONEY
In the last decade the Physics Department has received more than $3 million in external grant funding for equipment and undergraduate research programs. Therefore Coe’s physics labs are equipped with the most up-to-date equipment.
BRING YOUR PASSPORT!
Hundreds of Coe physics majors have presented their research at national and international conferences in Italy, England, Germany, Japan, France, Czech Republic and Greece.
WE ROLL WITH THE BIG DOGS
Students spend the summer doing research in labs all over the nation and world. Each year, one Coe student is selected for a summer internship at Corning Inc. in Corning, New York, and X Labs (formerly Google [X]) in California. These summer internships are made possible by Coe alumni.
COE-GRATULATIONS FROM THE AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY
A curriculum centered on real laboratory experience providing extensive undergraduate research and internship opportunities garnered the Award for Improving Undergraduate Physics Education from the American Physical Society. Coe is the first Iowa school to receive this distinguished physics recognition — and one of only a few physics departments in the nation to have multiple faculty members awarded the Prize for a Faculty Member for Research in an Undergraduate Institution throughout the years.

SANDEEP GIRI ’04
of physics majors accepted to graduate school have received a full ride.
Sandeep has worked at X Labs, a research and development laboratory founded by Google, focusing on “moonshot” projects like self-driving cars and Google Glass. He worked on Project Loon developing balloon-powered internet service. As a Coe student, Sandeep published five papers through the Coe Physics Department and presented at over a dozen conferences. He attended Stanford University on a fully funded fellowship, pursuing a master’s in material science.
100% of physics majors complete at least one graduate-level research project before graduation.
Environmental
HANDS-ON FIELD EXPERIENCE
Coe students have the unique opportunity to study in urban, agricultural, natural and true wilderness areas as part of their undergraduate experience. In addition, opportunities are available for summer research in water quality, urban ecology, conservation management and wildlife biology both in Iowa and the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FACULTY CONNECTIONS
Coe faculty have long-standing connections with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Iowa Geological Bureau and Trees Forever that lead to student internships and research opportunities.

During her studies at Coe, the ReLeaf program manager completed forestry research inventorying state park trees with Trees Forever and a summer term at Coe's Wilderness Field Station. She majored in environmental science and biology and earned a master's degree in conservation biology from Illinois State University. Before working with ReLeaf Cedar Rapids, Rachael set up the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center's environmental chemistry lab at Lewis and Clark Community College and founded Mount Mercy University's sustainability office.

Admission to medical and graduate programs in health professions is not based solely on GPA and test scores. Admission committees also are looking for candidates with a well-rounded resumé including internships, volunteer work and research experience. At Coe, we provide students with all three of these experiences, which makes our students the top candidates for admission into professional schools in health-related fields.

Nursing THE ONE AND ONLY
Coe is the only college in the nation to offer three terms of one-on-one clinical experiences in which students work side-by-side with nurse preceptors in the clinical area. The national average is eight-to-one.
PASS YOUR BOARDS WITH FLYING COLORS
Year in and year out, nearly 100% of Coe graduates pass the boards on their first attempt. The national average is around 85%.
NURSING IN OUR GLOBAL SOCIETY
Experience global health care issues firsthand during study abroad options in locations such as South Korea, Barcelona, Thailand and Swaziland.
IT DOESN’T GET ANY BETTER THAN 100%
100% of Coe’s nursing graduates are employed after graduation. In fact, it is common for Coe nursing grads to have their choice of job offers. In addition, many of Coe’s nurses attend graduate school to obtain advanced degrees within five years of graduating.
