Neuroscience

Students are exposed to handson research and provided with a solid foundation for graduate study in neuroscience, medicine and the health professions.

Organizational Science

The major includes work in statistics, research methodology, social psychology, human resource management, business law and organizational behavior. Students are prepared for graduate study as well as careers in human resources, organizational development or institutional research.

Political Science

Students can conduct research and present their work at conferences in addition to studying off campus through Washington, D.C., Term. Coe students have interned at the Irish Embassy to the U.S., Department of Transportation, U.S. Attorneys Office and Cedar Rapids’ local government.

The

Psychology

Students present their research findings at conferences and take part in internships. Kohawks have interned at Tanager Place, Iowa Department of Corrections, UnityPoint Health - St. Luke's Hospital and Cedar Rapids Police Department.

Social & Criminal Justice This major allows students to experience the criminal justice system through a social justice lens. It has a unique focus on ethics, philosophy and morals. Students receive early exposure to hands-on experiences through observation opportunities and civic engagement in the first course.

Sociology

This program promotes students’ awareness and understanding of 21st century social problems. Through ongoing faculty projects, students craft a study compatible with their interests. From such research, many students create a senior honors thesis under the direction of a faculty member.

Larrisa is a J.D. candidate at University of Colorado Law School. Larrisa is a 2019 Truman Scholar. She participated in Coe's Washington, D.C., Term as a legislative intern for U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado while studying immigration, education and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). She is an advocate for women and children and wants to be a voice for domestic violence victims as a district attorney. At Coe, she volunteered at Waypoint and KidsPoint. She was involved in Student Senate, Model United Nations and founded the Latinx club.

Sara completed her master’s degree in genetic counseling at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She works as a genomic testing consultant at PerkinElmer Genomics. Sara studied in Stockholm, Sweden, for a term at the Karolinska Institute (one of the leading European medical research institutions). As part of Coe’s Health and Science Internship program, she also interned with the Neurology Unit of Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa and the Cancer Risk Assessment Clinic at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. She completed research with psychology and neuroscience professor Dr. Mike Baker, looking at the effects of prenatal exposure of methamphetamine in baby chickens.

As a Kohawk, Keenan interned with the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission and at St. Luke's Resource Center. Keenan completed psychology research with professors Dr. Sara Farrell and Dr. Sam Brown on the possible effect of self-compassion on work-transition quality. Keenan works full time as a catalyze coach for the nonprofit College Possible.

Caleb interned with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) during a Washington, D.C., Term as a student at Coe. Caleb was able to go out in the field with ATF agents, including gaining experience collecting evidence and observing training techniques the federal agency employs. "These are things you can never do at school," Caleb says.
